[Q] Help with my Samsung Captivate.. - Captivate General

The last Android phone I rooted was the HTC Hero... I need help rooting and installing a rom and unlocking my Samsung Captivate (Not necessarily install a rom). My main concern is 1. I want to unlock & 2. Allow to install apps from unknown sources (which from what I understand AT&T blocks). Should I stick with the stock 2.1 that came with the phone or should I use a different rom? I am somewhat new but all I need is someone to point in the right direction and I can figure out the rest myself. I am also wondering if I need to use the internal memory or should I use another microSD card... Like I said before... unlocking and allowing to install from unknown sources is my main concern..

It's your decision to stay with 2.1 or use a custom leaked 2.2 ROM. The ROM's are really good with what the Dev's are working with. You don't need to use an external sd card but it is worth having for extra room.

Am I better off going with 2.2? Is it stable? Someone told me about the Serendipity Rom.. Which rom would you recommend that is 2.2?

The 2.2 ROM's are stable. I won't recommend a ROM though because each phone reacts differently. Serendipity is a good ROM and I am using it now, but you would be able to use pretty much any of the 2.2 ROM's and be happy. Mostly if you just want a ROM made by a dev you are really looking at the theme of the ROM. Check the threads in the dev section and read up on each one.

Try looking over the stickies and read the Wiki. Doing a search before posting is always appreciated, as well.

Is there a gingerbread rom out???

Looks like you're not reading at all. No gingerbread rom is out.

No need to get cranky.... No one is twisting ur arm to answer my question..

We get cranky when people expect answers to questions that are easily answered by looking over the forum and/or doing a search, much like all of your questions.

Anyway................
I reach the step where I do the Odin3 1-CLick Downloader but the program doesnt seem to see the phone. Any idea why????
P.S. I did my research but couldnt find an answer.

Yes & Yes
I downloaded the 1.3 version and the 1.0 version of ODIN3 but the 1.0 version was a 275MB file..

After you install the drivers, you put your phone in download mode
Then you open odin (whichever one you want to use, I normally use 1-click)
Then you plug in your phone and it should recognize it; if it doesnt, then somethings wrong with your drivers--reinstall them
if you start it, but it hangs at reading pit file (or some variation) then unplug some USB accessories and try again. (sometimes it takes me up to 4-5 tries before it begins to flash)
And I'm not getting cranky, I'm merely stating what I'm observing.
I barely ask questions on the forum because I can normally find what I'm looking for if I were just to read. Don't get me wrong, I want to be helpful; But when the information is all gathered in a few clicks, I don't see why some people can't find the most basic answers.

The Samsung Captivate Guide: FROYO 2.2

This guide is for if you are on Android 2.1 and want to get 2.2. If you are fine with 2.1 use this guide. If you already have Cognition you can use this just skip the install cognition step. If you are on a different version of 2.2 you need to do an ODIN reset (second to last page of guide)
UPDATED 10/11
This is a guide that is similar to the other guide however it is for DesignGears Cognition ROM.

No problem! If your still thinking about upgrading I would say its worth it. DesignGear(s?) makes great ROMS. However it does erase your userdata (although for something the files still remain on the SD card (like music). In addition in you want the official Froyo release you will have to use ODIN to flash back.
So, I just want to clear things up for myself.
Right now, I am running Eugene's ROM.
I will flash back to stock JF6
I can download the Cog 2.2 BETA6.zip file. Put it on my SD card and flash it using Clockwork.
If I want to flash back to JF6, I can use Odin to that.
Does all that seem right or is there more to it?
I did read the guide and it is excellent. I am just hesistant here, so just wanted some confirmation.
Thank you for your awesome work.

You use ODIN to get back to stock 2.1. Then follow the guide to the beginning. A summary of the steps to get cognition is:
Flash to 2.1 Eclar
Root the 2.1

That is what my understanding. I did this with an un modded captivate. I am pretty sure that was JH6. If you have a PC you can always just use his ODIN flash to install it and that is that. But I have a Mac so I made my guide Mac friendly.

Great Guide, Works Awesome!
Samsung Captivate

Install went smooth as can be. I had to install the drivers, as told by the guide, but I think you may have missed a step?
Under "Installing Froyo --> Prepare" you may want to add a note that the phone has to be in Mass Storage mode to transfer the ZIP. Not sure if this is always true, but I did have to do that on my own (it was not showing the phone when it was sitting in debugging mode.)
I will be sending you a $5 donation. Really wish I could send more, but simply cannot. I am hoping others are doing the same, as this guide is awesome...
I did have one question about the 2.2 update. I heard somewhere that this would fix the GPS issue, however, I am experiencing the same issues with connectivity. Does anybody know if Samsung/AT&T plan on fixing this?
Again, thanks!

This is an older thread. So the file no longer available.

[Q] Help with rooting+installing custom ROMs for Samsung Galaxy 3(i5801) running 2.2?

Okay, now I know that there are other threads about this, but the issue is that none are specific to my problem. Either they are not for my phone, or my version is different or the thread is dead and with no replies. So I created a new thread.
Anyway, I was hoping that I could get a step by step procedure on how to root my phone and install a custom ROM.
The issue is, my KIES doesn't work (so help me with that also please) and moreover, I'm very new to all this so I don't quite get a few things.
Also, please tell me what are the best ROMs out there and if something does go wrong in the process, how do I un-brick my phone?
So I'm looking for active replies / repliers since I know I'll have a bunch of questions during the process.
Last, when I go to "about phone" on my phone it says "firmware version 2.2", but the little that I've looked up, people run 2.2.1. Does this mean my rooting process is different?
Thanks. And in case you want it, my kernel version is 2.6.32.9
Appreciate it.
rooting z4root
custom rom - pick a custom rom and follow instruction in that thread.
Your phone is already updated to 2.2 and that is the reason why kies doesn't show new updates. Our phone has 2.2 and not 2.2.1
If you use roms which doesnt have boot then it will not get hard bricked. soft brick can be fixed by reflashing.
What is the exact issue you are facing while using kies? Try a uninstall and reinstall. That should fix it
K, so I fixed KIES. I just had to update though, I was running on an older version. I didn't think a slightly outdated version would not detect my phone.. anyway never mind that.
So I don't really know what the best custom ROM is out there. could you suggest one? one that is fast (speed is really the priority), and not buggy, supports the apps that the stock ROM should. I'm willing to try three-four, so give me the names of the best ones out there.
Don't I need to root my phone before installing a custom ROM? If so, then I need to learn how to do that..
What do you mean it doesn't have a boot?
Well to figure out best ROm you will have to read up on each ROm. Each of them have separate thread where initial posts describe the properties of ROm. There are ROm comparison threads out there but that is just summary. I cant give you best choices. Everybody has different taste. Start with more popular ones, whose threads have more posts. More post -> more popular.
You can root using z4root.
Custom ROM are pre rooted normally so you need not root your phone before flashing custom rom

if speed is a prime consideration then i would suggest kyrillos rom..... fastest rom i ever used....... very less buggy.......
you can also flash lestatious rom..... it is damn fast and surprisingly stable!.....
and check dharam's rom collection too....... i'm using his ultra clean ultimate rom right now..... and it's good although since you are new i would recommend flashing a different rom from his collection.....
As for rooting.... you don't need to root before flashing a custom rom....
And in case you need any information about any of the features or anything.... just post it here ....... i'lll try to help you in whatever way i can.,.....

Hey i would suggest u to go for Indroid 4.3. I m using this and have seen many users jumping from lestatious and kyrollis to indroid.
As a begginer, u will also get many help in Indroid thread.
Z4root doesnt work in Froyo, if u wanna root, choose superone click.
U dont need kies to work, Use Odin to flash ur fone.
Make sure to learn processes better by reading through forums, if u dont wanna brick ur fone.
Hey!! I would suggest Indroid 4.3 or Kyrillos 5.6. They are fast as hey have lagfix.
And no you don t have to root your phone before installing a custom ROM. But if you want to root, use superoneclick to root.
And as for bricking, you can avoid hard brick by installing a ROM that does not have bootloader. Bootloader is a piece of code that runs before any operating system starts. So you should avoid flashing bootloader.
As for soft bricks, you can just reflash to come out of the soft brick.
okay so i was doing a bit of reading up and i realised the following :
1)First i need to download :
a) Odin (please post version number i have to get for my i5801 (or is it just one thing for all phones?) or a link please.)
b) some backup software. now i downloaded titanium backup, but it won't open because it says my phone is not rooted. so help me go about this.
c) a custom ROM. I think i'll start off with kyrillos rom since i've been told it's the fastest and very less buggy. i'll then move on to Dharam's ROM if i don't like kyrillos rom because Dharam seems to be a very active user, and quite friendly, and i feel he can solve the issues well. after that i'll try Indroid.
d) I also need superone click.
Question : Where do i download these? directly on my phone or on my computer?
2) I can increase my internal storage by partitioning a part of my SD card. Now I have a 4 GB SD card and i barely use it, so i don't mind giving upto 1GB of it. Please suggest the perfect amount. whether 1GB will be too much, or whether 500MB would be too less.
3) some apps do not work with custom ROMs. The app that i really want is 4shared. It's working currently on my phone with the stock ROM, so if someone can check if that will also work on the three ROMs that i mentioned.
4) soft bricking isn't much of an issue, but it's better i avoid it. so can someone give me a rather up-to-date guide (or link) on rooting, because the other ones are REALLY old. at least 4-5 months old and there have been some updates after that.
5) I can also overclock my phone. And from what I read up, SetCPU seems compatible with the above ROMs. And after flashing my phone with a custom ROM, my phone is automatically rooted. Correct me if I am wrong.
6) Flash player isn't available for our processor (V6). Since this is a hardware issue, there's no way i can make it work on some other ROM, can I? Because flash is a rather important software..
So that's it, I guess. Please add anything if i missed out anything.
PS : Does anyone know of any software using which I can download YouTube videos? Because the YouTube app kind of sucks, and buffering takes time since I don't have WiFi.
Wow!! Those are a lot of questions.
1) Link for ODIN.
ODIN>http://goo.gl/nCxCw
OPS FILE>http://goo.gl/ORin0
As for the backup software, Titanium backup is the best out there. As it can backup all the apps and all the settings. Yes you have to be rooted. So root and use.
And for rooting, use this tutorial,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1011555
Don t worry about the oldness. This works. The link for superoneclicjk is available in that post as well.
Yes. Kyrillos is a good ROM. As it is prelagfixed and offer good internal memory as well after you partition your SD. Sizes, 512 MB ext4 and 128 MB linux swap. Rest of the memory you can use for storage.
As far as overclocking is concerned, in Kyrillos, you again have to flash a new kernel if you want OC.
And for the flash problem, only adobe can solve that problem.
And oh yes, most of the custom roms are prerooted. So after flashin you don t have to root again.

The rom is downloaded on your pc and flashed through it using odin.
I don't know any apps that work on stock rom and not on custom rom..... and 4shared works on kyrillos and indroid..... i've used it myself..
Most custom roms are already rooted and setcpu is the best app for setting CPU frequencies.
And as you said flash player isn't compatible with armv6 processors like ours.... so unless adobe makes it compatible no custom rom can do anything.
and for downloading youtube videos i'll suggest an app called you tube downloader or tube-X.......
Hope this helps...
Kernel
I flashed the indroid 4.0 Rom with Odin, and in short I will probably try to flash the indroid 4.3 Rom.
One question however, More and more I read about "kernel"(eg to get the 1% battery thing).
I know the kernel is the core of the operating system, but I don't understand how to use/apply it on my phone. Is the kernel something I have to flash separatly from the Rom, or is it included in the Rom?
If you need to install / flash it seperatly, where can I find the different kernels, and which one is recommended for my phone (Samsung Galaxy 3 Apollo)?
Hope someone can answer!
thnx

The kernel is included in the ROM itself. There are different kernels with different functionalities. For eg : - Most of the kernel that come with the ROMS are non-OC. So, if you want to overclock you phone, you have to flash the required kernel after flashing the ROM. The procedure is same using ODIN. Here s the link to the kernels.

Then press the home key, It should ask u to set detault launcher. Just click on the checkbox below and select touchwiz launcher.
Tell me if it works or not.
No I do not have any other launcher installed. At least it's not showing up there.. but i did try using the more latest version. 1.9.5. that seemed to work just fine. man, i was so scared before rooting this wondering what if something goes wrong. but that was easy

Well since your main focus is getting a wiimote going - give up for now.
There are no release-quality CM7 ROMs for our phones, and the only CM7 in existence has 100% broken Bluetooth.
Please, spend some time reading. You are talking about trying to get a CM7 ROM running, and then you link to Infused???

There are no release-quality CM7 ROMs for our phones, and the only CM7 in existence has 100% broken Bluetooth.
Please, spend some time reading. You are talking about trying to get a CM7 ROM running, and then you link to Infused???

i want a cm7 rom yes. and i do know theres none for the infuse yet (not officially). and i just bricked my phone trying to get infuse 2 beta 1 flashed in. so it dosnt even matter. i might just get the xperia play.

Try gtg's ultimate unbrick. Actually I think he has a stock rooted Odin package for the Rogers ROM which is closer to Infused v1.
If you can get into downloader mode, you're not bricked. And so far, only one person has managed to brick their device that badly, in the process of performing a dangerous experiment they volunteered for.

[Q] Complete flashing noob help

Hello all,
I've been lurking the XDA forums for a couple months now. I had a couple posts in the past referring to my phone and my girlfriends phone and was looking for help mainly with hers at the time... Hers is fixed... Perfectly even, despite her phone being a total piece of garbage (an LG Optimus.... *barf*).
I have a SGH-T959V.
I have read the 10 commandments.
I KNOW my phone is NOT a Vibrant OR an i900.
I have read the noob guides.
I have become completely confused.
Here's my details:
I have running the stock GB that I installed with Kies Mini some time ago.
Phone Data:
Firmware Version: 2.3.6
Baseband Version: T959VUVKJ6
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7-T959VUVKJ6-CL694130
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.VUVKJ6
I rooted my phone with one of the one-click apps after the stock GB update so that I was at least able to overclock it and get rid of the T-Mobile bloatware, etc.
I notice that my phone reboots entirely on it's own completely randomly, has random application hangs, all the bad icky stuff that sucks... (right????)
Anyways, I've looked at some of the Custom ROMs available and I'd like to check out some of them, but I'll be quite honest, I've read the instructions for how to do it, but I'm getting extremely confused as the current instructions seem rather daunting.... It's like information overload...
Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not some kid that really doesn't know what he's doing... I'm 33 and work in IT for The Nielsen Group... so I kinda know what the heck I'm doing MOST of the time. This is something I'm unfamiliar with and am being EXTREMELY cautious about because i don't want to brick my phone....
Question time!:
1. Is there a COMPLETELY SIMPLE step-by-step process/Video Demonstration for the CORRECT method of how to put a custom rom on the SGH-T959V?
2. Does it matter that I ALREADY rooted my phone in respect to me loading a custom rom? (ie. is my already rooted phone going to have issues loading a different rom?)
3. I would like to stay with a GB based rom unless there is absolute NEED to use a Froyo based Rom - Or is this a non-point when using custom roms?
4. If i want to load a custom rom to my phone, do I need to use a specific loader? (Like, does Odin work for everything??? Loading roms and unbricking your phone? Or do I have to have different loaders for the specific roms that I want to load and try out????)
5. Please don't jump down my throat with the "read the guide" responses... I HAVE been... really. As many as I've found... and every time I read a new one, rather than feeling like I'm coming out of the darkness of knowledge and into the light of understanding the correct process for how to do this, I feel like I'm being cast deeper down the confusion pit.
Would someone KINDLY please help me. Really... I don't want to screw up this thing... I'm not worried about the warranty. From what I've read, these things are mostly fixable unless it's an actual hardware issue or if it's totally fried. I just want to do it once, do it right, move on to my next project.... Dig?
First and foremost, we keep the most updated information in the wiki:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_4G
We've been updating it a lot lately so you're better off checking there. I'm sure you'll wanna bookmark it since you know what you're doing already.
1) Specifically you'll want to look at this section:http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_4G#Installing_a_ROM
2) If you're using Odin/Heimdall you won't need to be rooted since this bypasses the phone's OS and flashes firmware directly to the phone which may or may not be pre-rooted. The only Odin 2.3.6 KJ6 rom that's out right now does NOT come with root though, it's just the stock version you're already running.
3) For our phone you're either going to use Odin/Heimdall (learn Heimdall, it's much more useful) and CWM Recovery. Most roms available right now are for CWM.
Here's the list of custom GB roms:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_4G_ROMs
4) Honestly the forums are too cluttered and as I stated above, knowledgeable senior members are the ones who update the wiki, so that'll be your most useful resource.
If you already have some experience with computers I'll gladly help you, you're already asking the right questions.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks

When I last played with my phone, I had used Odin on Windows... I have replaced Windows with Linux... I have installed Heimdall and did an initial test. So it is working.
My question is: Is Heimdall a valid replacement for Odin? In other words, I am wanting to use your guide, but it only refers to Odin. Can I go through those steps replacing Odin with Hamdall?
Yes it should work fine. The csc files for kc1 should be extracted over the pda files though

FBis251,
Thank you so much for the quick reply! I had seen it immediately after you responded, but was driving home from work and went right to bed. I'm back at the office now for the evening and perhaps may have some time to look into these tonight... I don't know as of right now.
If you are serious about the offer of some assistance, I would be more than open to it if I honestly felt it was needed. I am MORE than experiences with computers, i'm a full on uber-geek (just not with smartphones...... yet....), so VNC, etc would not be an issue.
I will most certainly get back to you about this in the next few days (perhaps even tonight). Let me see how my work load looks this evening and I will update the thread later.
Thank you again so much!
I'm usually in #teamnerd on freenode if you do IRC.
It doesn't take much to confuse me these days...
Moved my issue into a new question in the Q&A forum...
Hey, just an FYI (even tho I'm sure that ultimately you don't really care - just being realistic, not a douche... ), I haven't had a single moment to look into this beyond briefly skimming the Wiki's you linked up for me. (thanks for that one). I've had a butt-load of server issues at work that have taken a lot of my time. I'm HOPING to be able to look into some of this stuff a little deeper tonight (god willing)....
I will drop a note if I have issues....
Thanks again!

[Q] Need help installing first ROM

I've read a lot within the HTC inspire section, and from there I've rooted the phone (I see I have super user in my drawer) but from here I'm looking for a sense 4.0 ROM that I can install. The instructions are very overwhelming. Is there someone who could please give me easy instructions on how to install a ROM? Thank you.

No one is gonna spoon feed this to you. this is about development and learning. if you are too lazy to spend time and learn than this is probably too much for you and you should stay stock. people stop thinking rom flashing is the 'in thing' to do because you have an android phone and you googled 'cool hacks for android'
Search how to flash a custom rom on HTC inspire
Send From My Galaxy Gio and O2x

Wht so mean?
Why are you people so mean? I started by saying I read a lot! I DID READ and after reading it became overwhelming. I am sorry that the first few of you were bothered by my post. It probably would have been better served if you simply had not said anything. Try helping next time and not being so rude.
Reinaldo33897Thank you. This has focused me in on one area, this is all I needed. My gus=ess is you use this phone. I have had this since ne from AT&T expecting Android 4.0 to be available for the phone (or so the salesrep then said it would) In your opnion, what is the best,or the one, that you are using?
Thank you

You agreed with the rules when u signed in. You come in here asking things that were answered many times. This is a development site and not Android 101. So, before whinning just check the rules and the threads. You might suprised of the power of the search buttom.
Besides, if you are overwhelmed by reading, how are you going to be if something goes wrong and u mess your phone? That is why u need to read...to be sure what u are about to. I was a noob (actually still am), but learnt to read and search...and take enough time to learn what to do and how....just a piece of advise....:good:

There are some really great roms out there. We can also use the desire HD roms as well so we are not limited to just the inspire devs. If you want to try an awesome ICS rom give IceColdSandwich 8.1.1 a shot ver at DesireHD
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1450962
Just one thing ICS is not officially released so the customs have a few bugs one being video cam not working but until the official release is out for the devs to gt the source codes we have to deal with it if we want ICS now. Gingerbread roms are solid.
There is also aospx here by exists as wll as roms Redemption and Melchizedek but these are No Sense ICS roms.
If you want to stick with sense try Android Revolution 9.04 as well as Coredroid they are very solid Gingerbread roms.
Once you learn to flash roms and feel comfortable with it try a few on for size and see what works best for you. What may be great with one person may be totally hated by another. Flashing is simple and cant really hurt once you feel comfortable.
Just one WARNING flashing radios are dangerous waters with the psibility of bricking the phone I would truly learn and learn more before you attempt that game. I dont bother cause radios are based on your region and where your located. Even if a dev says his rom works best with so-so radio I dont bother cause the dev may be in another country and Im in USA and the radio may not work. Tried it and got crap for service so now I stick with the stock radio that came with phone. Well sorry to write a book but enjoy we are here to help each other and the worse thing I hate is seeing someone turn their $400 into a paperweight.
Allow me to provide some input here ...

The better lot I saw replying here are senior members, and as such I actually expect you guys to behave and act as such. If a question from someone who's entirely new to the matter - even if the answer can be found by searching - doesn't sit too well with you then either don't reply at all OR try to be helpful by pointing her/him into the right direction.
Consider this a "wiggly finger" with no further consequences.
Thank you for your attention.
I know it's confusing even for people like me who has been here to find a proper guide to install a (custom) ROM! I am assuming you do want to install a custom ROM! Basic steps are below:
First and foremost is to Root and S-off your device
You also will need a recovery. I use 4ext, and it works wonderful
Then go to the custom ROM you like, download and look for installation instructions
Put the zip file in the root of the SD card
Once you install recovery, then reboot to recovery and pick install from zip, and pick the custom ROM zip file you put at the root of your SD card
Also read through WIKI http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/HTC_Desire_HD, although some information is old, it do have lot of resources.
BTW, there is no such thing as best custom ROM, it all depends on what apps you use with and where you live. Best bet is to flash a ROM a day, and see what you like! Good luck.
