[Q] CWM Wont work and other aggravating problems- What can i do? - Verizon Droid Charge

Hello, boy do I have a mishap. Well, anyway to begin I will say that I decided I wanted to root my phone to debloat it. So what I did, is downloaded the EE4 update and did the VooDoo V4 Kernel that flashes CWM and EXT4 and other junk. Well that all went great. I got it rooted and such but then just tinkering around I went into Rom Manager and told it to back up. WELL, when I did this the phone got locked on the SAMSUNG boot screen for hours and continued to refuse to boot. SO, I attempted to fix it by installing altered beast just to get the os running again and went into clockwork and backed it up. Then I went to the rooted ed1 to bring it back up to EE4 rooted and with the voodoo kernel and such but it refuses to open clockwork! The voodoo kernel changes filesystems and roots it and such but clockwork wont load. When I try to flash it in rom manager it says its succesful and then i go to reboot in recovery. It takes me to the Samsung Recovery 3e, I try to the update.zip, (yes i took the cwm recovery-update.zip and renamed it and through it in the sd card root) but all that happens is that a progress bar shows up for a split second then the android guy with the triangle and ! shows up and it does nothing. Help? I really need to back it up, preferably in the rooted ed1 but in ee4 will work to. Any ideas would be appreciated. I used odin v1.3 by the way. Im willing to try anything to get clockwork to boot so i can back it up. What do I do?
EDIT: Also, now when I go into 3e recovery, it complains saying " cant mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p3 " or something like that.

Did you read anything on this forum beforehand? Or just go link by link downloading files and deciding what to try on your phone?
Just saying..

Yeah, I did. Ive searched everywhere. I cant find anything about my problem. Ive looked at things that are close, hoping a solution can be found but nothing and no I wasnt just downloading files and spoon feeding them to my phone.. I just wanted to be able to debloat it.

Go search about Rom Manager and let us know what you find out...

I dont see how thats going to get me one step closer to solving my problem. Ive done the searching, now im asking.

Start w/ this one. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1100384

I can't tell where you are currently on your phone from reading that as it's to much text in one paragraph and it isn't put together in a logical sense and seems to jump around. I would look at the instructions for going to rooted EE4 in the Dev forum as that should get you to where you want to be with voodoo/cwm/rom

Instead of being a Forum Snob. If you know the answer, why don't you just help him out?
There's an abundance of confusing information on here and everyone uses acronyms. I too searched for hours on how to solve a similar problem and ended up having it taken care of for me. People join communities like this one for help. Not to get flamed for asking a question. It may be elementary to YOU but not everyone.

Thanks, for the care. Sorry about that if its jumbled, im frustrated with this because ive flashed the rooted ed1 about a billion times now, trying everything to get it functioning. Id be glad to try to explain again if that could help? Ah, yes. Well, I returned to the forum about installing the voodoo kernel. I followed the process word for word. But it just doesnt seem to want to work. Right now I just flashed it again back to the rooted ed1. Would I be able to put CWM on there at that point?

Yes. But don't use rom manager. Use imnuts cwm recovery.

Alright, thanks. Ill try and use imnuts's cwm recovery. But if someone may answer a question, is the samsung bootloader unlocked?? My brother said thats something to know.

so it is unlocked?? What does the exclamation triangle mean, when i try to do the update.zip from the samsung bootloader?

Oh and sorry if Im not getting this. Are you saying use a application that imnuts made? If so, could you be so nice to link it? Or a method he used? I looked for stuff but I didnt find anything other then what looks like a stock rom/kernel ed1 from him

I know how it is to be frustrated, but like they all said all of your questions have already been answered.
Here's my attempt to help:
Your problem lies in trying to flash CWR through ROM Manager, it currently doesn't play well with our phones. Word is that Koush (the creator) needs to update something for it to work with our phones. The bootloader is unlocked.
To flash imnuts' version of CWR, you'll need to use Samsung's leaked software called Odin - it's PC only. The alternative is Heimdall which is supposed to be cross-platform compatible, but the latest version is command-line only.
You have to find out if you've converted your system to EXT4 or if it's still RFS. That depends on if you have the Voodoo lagfix enabled or not. Check out the dev section and look for the titles that say [RECOVERY], [ODIN], [ROM], and/or something like "Get yourself to EE4 successfully".

Well, currently right now its rfs. Its the stock file system. What I was going to do, or did before, was to put it in download mode and flash the VoodooV4 Kernel. It roots the phone, and all that good stuff and is suppose to put the Voodoo recovery/cwm on there.
EDIT: Heres the proccess I followed before.

The recovery is a separate flash, both in odin. First the kernel, then Recovery.

Just follow here from the beginning, it should work for you:

Well I have good news. I would like to announce that I have successfully installed CWM. I guess my phone just didnt like the other one or something. But following this link,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1122657
I was able to get it installed. Now my only question is, I want this kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1092114 for my phone. But its not in a zip. Am I out of luck? Or do I not have to use CWM to install the kernel? Can I use odin and still be okay?

You do need Odin to load that, but i'm wondering why you want to? Did you install the PBJ kernel following the instructions from the other link?
If you want to go down this route, be sure to apply the SD Card fix as well - you'll find posts about it.

[Q] it is possible to...

Sorry, I'm new to this so sorry if this seems dumb.
So i bought the phone from rogers and immediately updated to froyo 2.2 official release by rogers/samsung.
I read about all the hype online about rooting and custom roms so i decided to give it a shot.
I used the superoneclick method to root my phone and it was successful.
I then used "rom manager - clockworkmod" and created a restore file before i did any flashing to my phone.
after creating a backup, i went on and flashed to the cognition 3.04.
Now my question is. Am i ever able to get my phone back to its original rom, kernel, and modem? the reason i want to know is because i might need to get my phone replaced due to some technical issues with the phone.
Also, does the backup of my phone after rooting play a part in any of this? if so, how?
Im sorry if there is already a post like this one. Its just that i couldn't find the answer through all the hundreds of pages of threads and replies, so I thought it would be easier to post a here with my specific question. Thanks.

Do I not use that link in general, or just not to use the firmware given at the bottom? the steps are correct though, no?
also from my searching.
i can put my phone back to my backup point (just after rooting) through clockworkmod. Woud this change my rom back to stock from? how about kernel and modem and all that? would that all get reversed back to my backup point? meaning it will basically be a stock phone. But I think also read somewhere that my kernel and modem does not get changed back to rogers original one. is there a way to do it?
I then found this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=846501
that says i need the original rogers rom for the captivate by the links there no longer work for download. Also on that thread, it was mentioned that the AT&T logo will still come up on startup, which would not be a good idea if i had to send my phone in for warrenty.
I then looked at : http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_S/SGH-I896
Here it tells me to flash to a i9000 before i reflash to a rogers firmware in order to remove the at&t logo. it also provides me with a link for the " Official Rogers Stock ROM ", but according to somebody on the first link i posted here, it isnt the "official rom"
Any ideas?
This is where I got the stock 2.2 file from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905042.
Edit: I have flashed a bunch of times and have never got stuck with the AT&T startup after flashing back to stock with the odin file.

Thanks. So im assuming now that the only time my kernel and modem wont go back to stock is when i flash with CWM. correct?
I haven't tried using the CWM file in that link so I'm not sure if it contains the kernel and modem. As far as custom roms go most if not all come packaged with the kernel and modem of choice.
So.. When I do a "master clear" from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989...
Would everything be wiped? I read somewhere that when you do a "wipe" from your settings it only clears user settings or something. What would a "wipe"
from the recovery menu do?
I flashed to a different rom today thinking it will help my battery issue. When i am flashing from one rom to the next, i do a restore back to my backup before i flash to a new rom. Is this the correct method? or am i supposed to wipe beforehand? The reason i ask is because this is my 2nd rom and my battery issue still seems to be there. I tried other methods of fixing hte battery but nothign seems to work. When i looked into root explorer, i see that there are a lot more files now everywhere, than when i first started. would some of them be from my previous rom? if so how do i remove them?

[Q] Please Help with CWM

Hi guys.
I'm a noob at this, so I really need some help. I followed the exact instructions in the noob guide to flashing in the general section. I keep trying to install different ROMs but so far I haven't successfully installed one -_- I get so close, and then when i try to flash the ROM when I'm in cwm it just says it fails. I really don't know what I'm doing wrong because I've looked up everything including the mounts and the exact instructions for certain ROMs. Please help, and if possible direct me toward an easier one to install. Thanks for listening to a tards complaints, any help is appreciated!

Hi,
Can you give a little more detail? Like what ROM you're currently on (Settings, About Phone, scroll to the bottom and check the "Firmware version" and the "Build number"), what the exact error is that you get from CWM, and what you are trying to flash?
Let's see, I'm using FroYo 2.2.1, with my build number being VUVKD1, two ROMs that I have tried to flash were valhalla v 1.3.2, and the Deodexed FIXED, the ones from the sgs4g bible. And the first error won't even let me look at my SD card once im in cwm. It says E: Can't mount /sdcard. When it does let me in, it says E: Can't mount /sdcard/T959VUVKD1_Deodexed_U1.zip and right below that it says operation aborted. Instead of the "Deodexed_U1.zip", whatever ROM i'm trying to install will appear there.

Big KUDOS to you for reading the Bible! Oddly enough I can't get to the Valhalla 1.3.2 thread. The one from the Bible is on version KI3 of the underlying ROM/kernel, which is a Gingerbread ROM. You're on Froyo which requires different boot loaders. The VUVKD1 Deodexed FIXED ROM is an updated version of Froyo and it should work. If you want to get on GB, I suggest hitting up the GB Ext4 starter pack here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1223765
What strikes me as odd is you're saying sometimes CWM lets you see the SD card, but other times it does not. I'm a bit confused on that.
How did you get CWM installed in the first place?
I was thinking the exact same thing! It must be because I followed some sketchy video on youtube on how to do root this phone, which probably wasn't in my best interest lol. It's strange because the deodexed FIXED is the one that I tried, and it just doesn't want to work. I'm a little discouraged :/
btw thank you for your help!

No worries; glad to be able to help. We were all new at this at some point; I'm still learning as I go.
You could use ODIN or Heimdall to try and flash a ROM. Those are located in the Development section where you found the Bible. That might at least get you to a better starting point for flashing.
Sounds good, I'll definitely try that.

Alright, so Stephen, i used Heimdall One Click to get the KJ1 Kernel Stock ROM with bootloaders, and so far everything works fine. I'm now on gingerbread 2.3.6. My build number is now VUVKJ6, so is there anything that you would suggest doing now for custom ROMs? Thank you!
Glad you got it working. My best advice for the custom ROMs would be to test them & see which you like the most

Um....what are you doing? With CWM you're not using the ROM manager app right? You want to get into red recovery, that's what most instructions are talking about when they say cwm.
To get there: (if you have it)
Power off, then hold power button and volume up and down. (3 button)
Keep held, Samsung will come on, then turn off, when it comes on again let go of the buttons....should go into red recovery. That's where to flash roms from. Good luck.

Sent from Mt. Olympus
yup. Pick i9000 and flash. also check out GTG's Infused ROM OP!! VERY useful info to get you started.
other than people telling you to read this whole thread fails.
OK you can use cwm from rom manager for the i9000. but first you need to replace the recovery binary with a modded one. that needs root.
search dev section on cwm fully working... or something to that matter. also search YouTube. YouTube is great for any type of DIY activity including Modding your phone.
there is an alternative to this by flashing the community kernel or the defuse kernel in Odin or heimdall. that not only doesn't need root but will root your phone, enable voodoo lagfix, and give you red cwm. there is a one click heimdall package for the defuse kernel. personally I disable voodoo beforehand to speed up the process. to do this open the sdcard and create a folder and subfolder having the path /sdcard/Voodoo/disable-lagfix
to be clear you don't create /sdcard that already exists. it is the root of the SD card. if you use the built in file manager it wont show as /sdcard but will be "home" or something.
so open my files or other file manager, navigate to home which is normally the sd card, if not navigate to /sdcard and create a folder named "Voodoo" capital "V" then open Voodoo and create "disable-lagfix" once that is done you can flash the defuse kernel or the community kernel. then flash a rom then if it all goes well reboot into red cwm and enable lagfix and reboot again. it takes a while and the phone talks to you in sexy female robot voices for a while.

I never had an inspire but there is no way this is harder. there is no locked nand on Samsung devices. just a weird recovery that is easy to work around on froyo since it was so easy to root. future devices will get increasingly hard but you have to understand that Samsung isn't taking anti-flashing measures like HTC and Motorola it is security measures to prevent exploits for being used in malware, things are getting harder because it is getting harder to root android. at some point the only way to flash is gonna be to wait for a leaked rom, edit the images and then flash. or some complicated way we haven't seen yet.

IF you're looking to go from froyo to a gb rom,
I suggest starting here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1331381
learning how to flash with heimdall is pretty simple.
Flash it once in download mode. Flash it again with the bootloaders box checked.
reboot and you're in uckj4.
Then flash the kernel to give you recovery
then flash the gb rom you want...
there are other methods...it's a matter of prefs

[Q] Flashing ROM

Ok, so here goes a real noob question!
Although I am not a NOOB, but what I have read just seems a little outrageous.
Ok, So i have successfully rooted. I have seen some posts suggesting the use of ROM manager, and other saying NO.
I have read the NOOB guide, and that seems to be a little excessive to install a ROM onto this device.
Do you have to use the Heimdall method, because I do not have C++ installed, nor do I even know how to use it.
I want to get CWM installed, but I cant seem to find a method for just that.
So if I understand correctly, I have to install a Kernel w/CWM, then I can boot into CWM and flash a ROM onto the device?
I looked on the wiki, but some of the links there are broken, and there are missing files as well.
I really hate ask these kind of question, but I feel that I am really stuck here.
if someone could please help.

If you already rooted, which you stated that you are, then download an app called SGS Kernel Flasher. Then download any kernel you like for whatever firmware you are running (2.2 kernels for 2.2.1 and 2.3 kernels for 2.3.x) and flash with the app, Note- I recommended you flash this one if you are on 2.3:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1513287
Once your phone reboots it should have the kernel successfully installed and you should be able to boot into recovery by powering down the phone completely and holding the volume buttons and the power button

Root Help

Hey everyone.
Im generally pretty savvy with androids. I rooted and S-offed my HTC Desire, I had a nexus S for a bit until it got ran over... Now im stuck with this Galaxy S 4G, which has been nothing but headaches because for some reason... this thing is impossible to root to me. Ive tried Hemidall, Super1clicks, Odin etc..
Can someone please just point me in the direction of rooting this POS? Im hoping that once its rooted and running stock, I wont hate this thing as much... because so far, Its a horrible purchase.
I just need someone to post a link to where I need to be. Ive searched.. and im absolutely lost. Even the Rootz wiki was useless to me.

Read that then understand what bhundven means by DONT FLASH BOOTLOADERS!!
You can use the heimdall one clicks he created to get root access and then flash any rom that DOESNT HAVE BOOTLOADERS INCLUDED. That means do not use gremlin remover period. Once you get rooted make a backup and keep it stored in as many places as possible. If you flash the ics variants you will have to use the stock kj6 HOC and then need to flash the HOC for antonx kernel to get root back. At that point you can flash your nandroid or whatever rom you want. AGAIN AS LONG AS IT DOESNT HAVE BOOTLOADERS included.

I have no idea what youre talking about. Sorry
I used the Hemidall, and only got an unrooted Tmobile rom.. Im not sure where exactly i get root from this
Meh, forget it... im selling this phone. There is no convincing me to ever buy anything from Sammy again unless its a Nexus line.
HTC or Nexus forever.
Thanks guys
Reading is hard
"Can I get step by step directions please?"
Sure, here you are!
"What?! Your not going to remotely root my phone for me? F this place"
Good luck sir, you have the patience of a saint and the drive of a tiger!
OK let's be honest you gave up kinda quick.......
The forum that eollie linked you to was a forum talking about the phone that you bought, which is an apparent offshoot of the t-959v and according to what Masonite found out, "our" roms work on the t-959w but you cannot flash the bootloaders.
Here is the one click link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1358498 just boot into download mode and use this but absolutely don't flash bootloaders and it should be OK, no promises.
Eollie was right for linking you there, all the info you needed about your model phone was on that forum, that one click is in the dev sticky which everybody should read.
There has been a flood of people not researching a little bit first before posting and that's why people flamed you but you should not give up, its a good phone and our devs are dedicated and have put in a lot of time on this model, you should be happy your phone can even support all the great roms that are available.
I'm not being mean but seriously, come on, all the info is there, no need to get mad.

Edit: or Google search how to use heimdall if your confused, I learn off a damn YouTube video..........
Our devs didn't create heimdall and don't support it but it is a great program and the dev has to build the individual one click for the phone, we should be happy to have it that easily available.
Reading the whole thread you got linked to is really hard. Phone-bricking hard

You'll need to flash one of the back to stock files that you got linked to in that thread which will put you on stock GB with no root. DO NOT FLASH THE BOOTLOADERS. You'll very likely brick if you do.
After this download the AntonX kernel from bhundven's one click thread and flash that. That will give you a custom kernel with CWM built in and root.
Needless to say, this is all for the SGH-T959V which theoretically should work on the SGH-T959W. As you'll read any disclaimer on this forum, you're resposible for anything you flash and the damage that may occur to your device.
Thanks for that fb I forgot a few steps if he wants to be on mtd roms, I assumed he could read from that point............ but your right for knowing better

Thank you very much, and I'm sorry for getting angry. I've had this phone for almost 4 months now, and haven't been able to do anything with it. Quite frustrating.
So, I currently have the Tmobile ROM on my phone, so I'm halfway there it appears!
I'm going to download the other ROM as soon as I get home.
Thanks so much! Next up.. Learning to flash with Odin, and not ROM manager.
It seemed like everything I tried wasn't working with 2.3.6. Superoneclick etc.
I was waiting for a new exploit, but it never came. I tried YouTube tutorials, text directions.. Everything would fail, or give me "read only" errors. I feared bricking, so I stopped.. But I searched the forum and came across the thread he linked me to, but it said no bootloaders, and all the ones I saw had bootloaders. Wasn't until tonight that I noticed it's a 2 part flash process, with the second being the bootloaders.
I think I started this thread at 3am.
Lesson learned.
In heimdall, you can click a little box that says "flash bootloaders" to toggle flashing them on and off! .... or maybe it was odin? I can't remember... been a while since I used them!
After being away for the weekend, I came home, and BAM... fully rooted. Amazing! and FINALLY!!!
Thanks everyone for your help...
I just have another issue.
I wanna flash this ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1305145
It says its CWM.. but there is a huge disclaimer that we shouldn't use ROM Manager on the development page, which is a bit confusing. Since this ROM isnt Odin flashable... what do i do?
Thanks again.
So I was confused about this when I first started. I'm not at my computer but I can help. In order to flash Roms via cmw you have to turn off your phone hold both volume rockers on the phone then hold the power button and hold till you get into cwm recovery. That will get you into cmw recovery mode. Then wipe data factory rest, from there go back to the main menu and select the install zip from sd card and find the zip file you want to flash and select it and install. Should be good to go.
