Every ROM should have a kernel cooked into it (99% of the time). Your phone will not boot if it lacks a kernel. When you flash a new ROM ensure you factory reset, wipe cache, and format system before flashing the new ROM. The only time you need to worry about flashing a kernel on a ROM is if you would like to change it, or in the rare case, if it lacks one.
Thanks so much

No worries man, I know what it's like to be unsure and its irritating. Just make sure to backup any apps you have, because wiping obviously will return the phone back to "stock" thus lacking apps and current system settings (alarm ect.)
Edit: I recommend titanium backup for backing up and restoring apps.
Cool one more question if u have the time. I went to install the new Tom and clockworkmod tells me it can't mount system I looked around on the fourms and could find a solid solution.?

Are you using ROM Manager? If so, that may be why... it has been buggy for a while it seems, but I always flash manually so I wouldn't know where it's at now. Boot into recovery by holding power and volume down (when the phone is off) and let go when the LG logo changes to another logo. From there do the three wipes (factory reset, cache, and format system) then flash ROM and reboot. (Format system is under mounts on the main screen)
K trying today ur a life saver

Looks like your only option is to wipe and reflash whatever rom it is youre using... However, you did post this in the wrong section, and some people tend to get anal about such things...
Almost sounds like you were using an Evervolv rom [happened to me when I was on it.] But what rom are you using? I suggest doing a clean wipe and installing the latest google apps.

That format file essentially does the same thing as wiping through recovery.

I don't think it does. I don't think normal wiping in recovery wipes the system folder. That's what I read once. Might not be true, but I don't see it say "WIPING SYSTEM..." in Amon RA when I tell it to format. It does data, cache, and sd .secure, I think, but not system.
Edit 1: Oh, and I'm one of those people who are anal about where you post things. Have you never been to a forum before? CLEARLY there is a questions and answers sub-form under the Supersonic main forum section.
Edit 2: I just realized who I responded to. Barnacles, I'm guessing you know better than I do since you actually helped develop the ONLY stock Gingerbread ROM for the EVO that's out right now.
Hello,
I'm a new poster here, but a long time lurker... Anyway I'm having a problem.
I just rooted and flashed the Heinz57 rom, got everything set up the way I want it. I booted into recovery to do a back up and it says "Error while backing up Boot Image." Yes, I've disabled lagfix. USCC Mesmerize, btw.
What is this error and how do I fix it?
CwM 3.x, fyi.
Thank you for any help!
Do you have lagfix enabled? If so, try disabling it in CWM, reboot, and try backing up.
Ha! Just edited the OP!
I have it disabled everytime I try to back it up. No luck.
But have you disabled it and rebooted your phone to actually let it convert the file system back?
I disable, reboot, let it do its thing and when it's done, go back into recovery. Try to backup, it gives me the error.

No. But wouldn't I need to flash a whole new rom to use it?

No you don't...I just tried making a nand this morning and am having this same issue, had to odin 2.5 recovery to make a nand. I tried to odin cwm3 thinking it was the .zip, reflashed the rom, kernel and other recoveries, nothing worked just the same error in the op..im trying all the recommended fixes I can find..
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
never mind my last post, I reflashed the OTB 1.3 TW kernel and everything is back to normal with that recovery...making a cwm3 nand now.
So it's a problem with Heinz? Or am I reading that wrong?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
I wanna say its something with the recovery and whatever kernel you've got going, specifically. Wish I knew more.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
So I can odin flash 2.5 without losing my rom and settings? I didn't know that... lol
Why r y'all disabling lagfix? Ive not been disabling and my backups r restoring just fine. I vaguely remember that disabling was recommended at some point but thought it was on cwm2.5 so when we got 3.0 I tried not disabling and been good so far on every Rom I've flashed.

If you leave it enabled and end up with a bad Rom flash that forces you to have to use Odin you can end up with a lot of issues.
Hey guys ok i have a few questions,
First off id like to begin that i did flash my G2x (P999-DW WIND MOBILE) with NVFLASH, i installed the CWM 4.0.15? because i didnt/couldnt find an external SD card. I made a back up of my phone. Now i want to start flashing
Few Questions,
1. which of these would you say is better?
MIUI Galnet, CM7.1 Stable Build, or Axura?
I used to use axura on my captivate like 1 year ago, and it was pretty nice, never tried miui or cm 7.1.
2. Once i've downloaded the Rom, do i have to take my sim out? i remember how to flash on the captivate, which was basically take out battery, take out sim, pop in battery, and hold volume up + power to go into clockworkmod, and then click install zip from SDCARD.
3. How bad is stock camera compared to LGs camera? right now the camera is nice LG's software, but i dont think i would mind the stock camera that much really,
4. any overheating / battery drain / screen bleeding after flashing to these? i've had no problem with screen bleeding, sometimes my phone overheats (40.0C at max, 104 °F.) I've also never had any reboot, or black screen .. only once i believe for the 3 weeks i've owned this phone.)
Anyways thanks for looking and thanks for any support!

1.cm7 nightlies I'd say are the best, but of you want nice eye candy +iphone then miui is for you. If you want stock based rock solid then weapon or axura is for you.
2. No need to remove Sim card. Just flash away. I recommend cmw 5.x.x.x. Vol. Down plus power is the key combo here.
3. Not really that bad comparatively. 4. Not really unless you oc. But it may depends on your device.

hey tahahawa, thanks for your input, im really leaning towards CM7, but i have a couple of questions, does the phone freeze/blank screen? i cant have that happen please let me know any issues with gps or anything? i cant seem to find anything on cm7 please let me know
also - if i restore back to stock 2.2.2 from the back up i have made on my phone, will it restore the phone exactly to stock i.e, if i was having gps issues it would be fixed, also would it return it to stock kernel and stock baseband which is the june 05 one i believe?? and if i upgrade it will it provide a new baseband?

Black screen doesn't happen to me very often and it's only because I'm pushing the phone really hard oc/UV a lot. baseband will not be upgraded with the ROM. Neither will the baseband be backed up with the nandroid.

requires a root enabled file explorer or adb. File expert is one that would work, you just need to enable root in the settings. About the texts, what phone does she have? I don't have any issues with texting, I get texts from Nokias, iPhones, other Androids etc. I have no idea what the problem is.
She has a blackberry 9780 on wind also this is tripping me out I.called her number but its actually going to My old number I don't know I have to see her phone and run tests
anyways also in settings under status it does now notice mY number? Is this a common issue?

Just enter your number manually. I also get texts from blackberries, make sure she isn't sending mms/bbm accidentally. But I wouldn't know.
Edit: if you don't mind changing roms you could try weapon g2x, a stock 2.3.3 based ROM. Everything should work on there and it has many tweaks, almost as many as cm I believe.

sorry im such a noob im used to teh captivate which was > one click back to stock 2.1 , rom manager clockworkmod and then flash
i dont want to mess my phone up
edit: ok i didnt know how to delete /system so i just factory reset , wiped cache, battery stats, dalvik cache - > restored again to cm 7.1 the stable one, same problem with the same number, then again wipe cache/factory reset/dalvik cache/batt stats > back to stock 2.2.2, now gonna flash weapon
edit 2: ok i figured out how to delete /system and now i flashed weapon g2x thanks so much!!! gonna test it out
edit 3: with weapon i can text my sister, system with touchwiz (which i love!!) seems alot smoother than cm7
two problems: voice search when updating it gives me "error package was not signed correctly"
and youtube wont update itself, ive tried but i get stuck on a Loading and a circle of loading .. tried on wifi and network.
thanks again! Especially tahahawa!!!
I recieved the OTA update for the G2x to the latest v21y firmware and Gingerbread 2.3.4 OS. Everything seems to have gone fine, except that now in Google Play apps it gives me the following error when trying to install or update *any* app:
'Error downloading "xxx". There is insufficient space on the device.'
Of course, I have an additional 8 GB micro SD card that is almost totally empty, and the internal phone storage has 3.2 GB available. The phone memory lists 0.94 GB available as well.
I followed the usual advice of clear data / clear cache for both Google Play and Download Manager. I unmounted/mounted both phone and SD cards. I turned off the phone, pulled the battery for a bit, took out the external SD card, put the battery back in, and booted back up. I rebooted a bunch of times. I put the external SD card back in. I cleared off extra crud from phone storage via a file manager, and I cleared caches on all installed apps.
This has never happened before, and directly after the update it has happened 100% of the time I have tried.
Any ideas? Is this happening to anyone else who got the update? (I'm completely on stock, btw, still not out of warranty.)

Does that require rooting? I haven't installed CWM yet, as I was holding off on all the experimentation until my year was up.
If there's no other usual thing to try, if T-mo doesn't come back with a reasonable response I suppose that's the next step.

So a factory reset fixed it. I didn't have to wipe the phone and external SD, and so I'm just reinstalling apps and setting up a few of them. This was a good time for some spring cleaning anyway, I suppose.
It was probably some stupid permissions thing, but without root I can't even fix that.

What is this update supposed to accomplish anyway? I'm rooted and trying ROMS pretty much every week (since no ICS rom works for me as a daily driver). Should I / can I do the update to 21y?
V21y 2.3.4 Rooted Touch Key lights
so everything else works fine when it comes to rooted app root request, but for some reason when a touch key light app request permisson it can do the job of adjusting the touchkey brightness, however the screen becomes very unresponsive, to the point where you cant slide left and right... I have run out of ideas as to why this is? has anyone else experienced this? I like to be able to turn that brightness down
What would happen if I didn't wipe before flashing? And do I need to flash the 12.2 kernel
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
I'm not sure what would happen. It would probably be less stable or not work... You could always try it though.
You do not need to flash any kernel. Only flash LeanKernel if you want to. If you don't want to mess with BusyBox, I'd wait on the kernel.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
From my experience on other devices when flashing ROMs and not wiping I would almost always bootloop. Again that is my general experience. I would assume there would be similar results.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
I usually backup the current ROM first, then factory reset before wiping cache. I end up with good results that way. The only time I installed a ROM without wiping, it was unstable.
Well, I tried flashing it, and it seemed to work. This is without the wipe.. But the only thing I found incorrect was that the wifi notification didn't go away. That was an easy fix though.
Should the battery life be noticeably better?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
Yeah I was kind of retarded the other day and forgot to wipe. I was greeted with a nice bootloop until I pulled the battery and tried again (this time the correct way) then everything worked great..
I haven't wiped for any of the Synergy builds and my phone is running great Running Imos kernel too. Awesome battery life from this thing
So.. Even though I didn't get a boot loop after flashing without the wipe... Do you guys think I should just wipe and flash again?

A wipe may not be completely necessary but if you do run into problems (FCs, etc.) and post a problem the devs or users are going to ask if you did a full wipe or not - and then recommend that you do one. In the end it wouldn't hurt to wipe even if you are fully functional.
I used to hate wiping all the time but with the proper backup applications it doesn't take long at all. I use Titanium Backup to backup apps and then also do in app backups for specific things like nova launcher, minimalistic text, and gosms,
