Hello,
I'm a new poster here, but a long time lurker... Anyway I'm having a problem.
I just rooted and flashed the Heinz57 rom, got everything set up the way I want it. I booted into recovery to do a back up and it says "Error while backing up Boot Image." Yes, I've disabled lagfix. USCC Mesmerize, btw.
What is this error and how do I fix it?
CwM 3.x, fyi.
Thank you for any help!
Do you have lagfix enabled? If so, try disabling it in CWM, reboot, and try backing up.
Ha! Just edited the OP!
I have it disabled everytime I try to back it up. No luck.
But have you disabled it and rebooted your phone to actually let it convert the file system back?
I disable, reboot, let it do its thing and when it's done, go back into recovery. Try to backup, it gives me the error.

Just making sure. Have you tried using CWM 2.5?
No. But wouldn't I need to flash a whole new rom to use it?

No you don't...I just tried making a nand this morning and am having this same issue, had to odin 2.5 recovery to make a nand. I tried to odin cwm3 thinking it was the .zip, reflashed the rom, kernel and other recoveries, nothing worked just the same error in the op..im trying all the recommended fixes I can find..
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
never mind my last post, I reflashed the OTB 1.3 TW kernel and everything is back to normal with that recovery...making a cwm3 nand now.
So it's a problem with Heinz? Or am I reading that wrong?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
I wanna say its something with the recovery and whatever kernel you've got going, specifically. Wish I knew more.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
So I can odin flash 2.5 without losing my rom and settings? I didn't know that... lol
Why r y'all disabling lagfix? Ive not been disabling and my backups r restoring just fine. I vaguely remember that disabling was recommended at some point but thought it was on cwm2.5 so when we got 3.0 I tried not disabling and been good so far on every Rom I've flashed.

If you leave it enabled and end up with a bad Rom flash that forces you to have to use Odin you can end up with a lot of issues.

Okay so if I want to go back to H57 can I just do a restore? And CM7 flashes CWM3 right?
Sent from my SCH-I500
I have tried to flash this several times with little luck guess I am missing something.
Currently I have Heinz_57.Hybrid_v5_7_11_OTB_edify and using the heinz57 custom blue cwm.
I flashed MESMERIZE Cyanogenmod 7 first and the proper GAPPS second. When I reboot the Android pops up and does nothing else I have waited five minutes no luck. I wind up having to reflash and go back to Heinz 57. I did wipe Data also noticed when flashing Cyanogenmod 7 it doesn’t give me the blue random words I get when flashing other kernels.
Please tell me what I am doing wrong.
I also did the exact same as the poster above me, from the same ROM and CWM custom blue recovery and have had no luck... I have also tryed about every other combination I can think of, with the same results. Which for me, is after reboot i get stuck on the samsung logo. I've let it run the course for over 10-15-mins with no change just for good measure but still nothing. I can flash and run ANY other rom so far besides cm7, including cm 7.0.3. So.. I'm verry baffled atm myself..
I'm am in no way sure about this since i have not flashed cm7 but you may have to odin froyo and start from scratch, i had this problem with another rom and my best guess is it was do the the kernel that was installed was not the correct one. Another thing to try is a wipe and install a non-vodoo aosp kernel reboot recovery and then try to flash zip again
Jack off. That helps.
Load an soap kernal first then flash cm7 and gapps. I don't know why this works but its what I have to do every time I load cm7.

cm7 has the kernel built in, you shouldn't need to flash one separately.

Yeah that's what many of us assumed. Unfortunately that doesn't appear to be the case as we learned. There were a number of us that ended in boot loops or frozen on the splash screen if you just flash the rom and gapps.
Sorry for jacking this thread but which recovery allows you to do a legit nand? The otb gives me a boot img error and ti's makes 3 separate on CM7? I thought I solved all my nand problems before I flashed this by doing bdemartinos posted fix.

Download this and flash it with Odin.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/teamacid/files/fb/roms/custom_kc1_cwm/csc.tar.md5
You might need to re-convert to ext4 afterward.
EDIT
It goes on the CSC section by the way.

I should've read the whole post. It appears that he's on gingerbread though, so the modified recovery file won't work. He'll have to wait till he gets on a pc. :/
What FBi said. Ughhh if only the cwm didnt get erased. Do you know the cause of this problem or is it just random...?
P.S. Currently running stock KF2 deodex. Rooted. :/. Ahaha. I was on kh2 but somehow it went back to kf2..
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA Premium App
Only way it could've gone back to KF2 would be that you flashed it. The thing is that a lot of people reported having more trouble with the earlier GB builds, I'd stick with anything past KG6, so KG6, KH1 OR KH2 for now since that'll get rid of a lot of your problems.
If you do wanna stick with KF2, you'll have to flash the CSC file from KC1 through Odin, then do a factory reset. That should fix the disappearing apps problem. (Raver figured that one out).
u can factory reset from the phone if you can get into blue recovery also do factory reset and wipe cache then do it again from in the phone itself...
that should fix it..
@fbi. The thing is. I was running kh2 then after the 3days, it suddenly changed back to kf2?. idontevenknowhow. I did not flash anything or even touch my phone at all during the 3 days... And i cant get in blue recovery. Even with quickboot. . gotta wait till i can get to a pc.

I have been running Valhalla black and its by far my favorite rom. i kinda got greedy and tried to make it better with Lightning Zap. However i noticed a drop in framerate so i thought "good thing i made a backup last night"
so i went to restore and it finishes as expected but i get a bootloop.
Any Fix?
...without reflashing it all...?

no.. the first thing that occured to me was the back up so i tried it.

I've never even been able to get a full restore to go through on my sgs4g. Try reflashing rom then doing an advanced restore of data only, that's how I keep my setup.

yeah that was the only way i got my setup back..
i odin cycled 4 times trying to restore. i knew just reflashing would save time but i tried to find out what was causing the bootloop.. i odined kd1 and worked up from there twice. No Dice. Odined KJ6 and went from there twice. Still no go..
I made sure voodoo was activated/disabled when it had to.. i restored Valhalla Final once before going to Valhalla Black. I dont see whats wrong
If you haven't fixed it yet stop using Odin and clear out your gremlins with this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1422824
Then proceed to cwm flash Val black followed by reboot recovery. Finally advanced restore data from your Val black backup and you should be set to go.

So does anyone know the problem with the restore then? I tried it, knowing it might bootloop my phone, and it bootlooped it.
It was a good bootloop too- the kind where you couldn't get into download mode without a computer.
Edit: I was using Val Black, and hadn't changed anything.
I believe this is an issue with Gingerbread roms. There are two ways you can restore:
1) Do an "Advanced Restore" and only restore your data.
2) Grab drhonk's Bali Kernel for Froyo 2.2.x and also the GB kernel of your choice (like the new KJ6 beta kernel with CWM and put both on your SD card.
- After you flash your gingerbread rom of choice, go to cwm and flash the Bali kernel (DO NOT REBOOT).
- Do a rull restore from your backup (DO NOT REBOOT)
- Flash the modded KJ6 kernel with CWM.
- Reboot your phone.

+1 if you are running cwm recovery from Dr. honk kg4-kj1 or the kj6 beta 2a-d.
if your are running the beta v1 kernel or the rc v1.1 kernel that comes with Val black you should have an updated cwm and a full restore should work.
Please report back with the version number listed in the top right corner of cwm

Val black uses smsv1.1 flashing v1 would be going backwards
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
It was CWM 5.x.x.x. The older versions didn't let you do a full restore (on gb), plus old backups were incompatible. I was using the latest kernel that came with it- fresh back up, everything.
I knew about the data trick, just restoring that. I believe that something was wrong with the boot img, or whatever is responsible for CWM in the kernel. I couldn't get into recovery, or download mode for a long time. I mean I did it on purpose, to see if it was really an issue, so I had it coming. I wouldn't recommend anyone else trying it though, because I didn't think I was getting into download mode at all.
Edit: Would reflashing the kernel after the back up have helped? I keep my roms on my sd card just in case I have to use recovery?

Yup, "wasn't working" is not descriptive enough.
Search this forum for logcat. Provide logs! If you can't provide logs, please try to be as descriptive as you can, so we can provide you with better roms and kernels.
I decided to dump the stock FP1 kernel for everyone who has been looking for an way to get it without having to go back to stock. It's Odin only right now, but I'll try to put together a CWM in the next day or two when I get time.
Stock FP1 kernel Odin: http://www.mediafire.com/?ns38atiw1d7er5x
EDIT: We now have a CWM version thanks to dwitherell. See his post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24459684&postcount=8
Make sure you're at rfs before flashing either of these kernels, otherwise, you'll hang at boot.
DISCLAIMER: As usual, I'm not responsible if this breaks your phone, burns down your house, or causes your dog to run away. I've tested it and it works for me.
Big thanks go to imnuts, both as an inspiration and for the many examples that I've studied and followed to get enough confidence to do this.
One more note. When I was testing this, installing PBJ over FP1 killed my boot animation and flashing the FP1 kernel didn't bring it back. If this happens to you, reflash your ROM and it should fix it.
sweet, this is what we need. It's a pain to go back to full image. Thanks bro.

Just what is the FP1 base rom? I thought the only way to get to the FP1 was from the base rom EP4.
Example, if I am currently running FP1 Eclipse, when I flash this, will I end up back at stock FP1.

Base rom, meaning a rom using FP1 as the base. Flashing this over Eclipse 2.0 will work fine, and should get your wifi back if you're having wifi issues.
I just had the weirdest thing. first, I am running eclipse 2.0 with PNJ. I tried to CWM the stock FP1 kernel after disabling voodoo Lagfix. My system booted up, but was so slow it was unusable. I cleared my caches before the flash and backed up (thankfully) any idea what went wrong. Of ya I also have tried reflashing ROM and kernel a couple times to see if it'll work. Any ideas what I'm missing here, I know it's something simple.

Were you using Voltage Control or SetCPU? I know when I first flashed the kernel it defaulted to Power Save for the Governor which was making it run pretty slow.
Yea I had voltage control, but it restored it to default before flashing. I think I'll just have to go back to stock, take update then root and put eclipse back on. If I decide I really want my wifi working again.

Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
I'm not sure what would happen. It would probably be less stable or not work... You could always try it though.
You do not need to flash any kernel. Only flash LeanKernel if you want to. If you don't want to mess with BusyBox, I'd wait on the kernel.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
From my experience on other devices when flashing ROMs and not wiping I would almost always bootloop. Again that is my general experience. I would assume there would be similar results.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
I usually backup the current ROM first, then factory reset before wiping cache. I end up with good results that way. The only time I installed a ROM without wiping, it was unstable.
Well, I tried flashing it, and it seemed to work. This is without the wipe.. But the only thing I found incorrect was that the wifi notification didn't go away. That was an easy fix though.
Should the battery life be noticeably better?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
Yeah I was kind of retarded the other day and forgot to wipe. I was greeted with a nice bootloop until I pulled the battery and tried again (this time the correct way) then everything worked great..
I haven't wiped for any of the Synergy builds and my phone is running great Running Imos kernel too. Awesome battery life from this thing

A wipe may not be completely necessary but if you do run into problems (FCs, etc.) and post a problem the devs or users are going to ask if you did a full wipe or not - and then recommend that you do one. In the end it wouldn't hurt to wipe even if you are fully functional.
I used to hate wiping all the time but with the proper backup applications it doesn't take long at all. I use Titanium Backup to backup apps and then also do in app backups for specific things like nova launcher, minimalistic text, and gosms,
