[Q] v21y/GB 2.3.4 update causes apps to not be able to install/update - T-Mobile LG G2x

I recieved the OTA update for the G2x to the latest v21y firmware and Gingerbread 2.3.4 OS. Everything seems to have gone fine, except that now in Google Play apps it gives me the following error when trying to install or update *any* app:
'Error downloading "xxx". There is insufficient space on the device.'
Of course, I have an additional 8 GB micro SD card that is almost totally empty, and the internal phone storage has 3.2 GB available. The phone memory lists 0.94 GB available as well.
I followed the usual advice of clear data / clear cache for both Google Play and Download Manager. I unmounted/mounted both phone and SD cards. I turned off the phone, pulled the battery for a bit, took out the external SD card, put the battery back in, and booted back up. I rebooted a bunch of times. I put the external SD card back in. I cleared off extra crud from phone storage via a file manager, and I cleared caches on all installed apps.
This has never happened before, and directly after the update it has happened 100% of the time I have tried.
Any ideas? Is this happening to anyone else who got the update? (I'm completely on stock, btw, still not out of warranty.)

Isn't that it? Is there something more that constitutes clearing market cache/data?

Does that require rooting? I haven't installed CWM yet, as I was holding off on all the experimentation until my year was up.
If there's no other usual thing to try, if T-mo doesn't come back with a reasonable response I suppose that's the next step.

No it requires Nvflashing cwm. But that will ruin your "warranty" on a end of life phone

You can factory reset without root. That's what T-Mobile will tell you to do anyways. I've went through six g2x in the past two weeks...that's their answer to everything lol

So a factory reset fixed it. I didn't have to wipe the phone and external SD, and so I'm just reinstalling apps and setting up a few of them. This was a good time for some spring cleaning anyway, I suppose.
It was probably some stupid permissions thing, but without root I can't even fix that.

What is this update supposed to accomplish anyway? I'm rooted and trying ROMS pretty much every week (since no ICS rom works for me as a daily driver). Should I / can I do the update to 21y?

V21y 2.3.4 Rooted Touch Key lights
so everything else works fine when it comes to rooted app root request, but for some reason when a touch key light app request permisson it can do the job of adjusting the touchkey brightness, however the screen becomes very unresponsive, to the point where you cant slide left and right... I have run out of ideas as to why this is? has anyone else experienced this? I like to be able to turn that brightness down

FC on any rom i use!

i been switching roms like CRAZY to find a stable one. i like the CM6 vanilla, Fresh 2.4.0, and NFX-Hero 2.2.1. those are my fav ive tested so far, ive tested several others as well.
I'm using RA-Heroc-v.1.5.2 Recovery mode. i have tried the clockwork recovery(that CM6 gives me) but its too buggy for me and annoying to use with so many unorganized things.
no matter what rom i use or either of those 2 recovery modes I've used. everything always force closes on the 2nd day of use. if anyone can give me tips of what i should do or what im doing wrong.

you might ruu your phone back to .5 and then from your phone go to unrevoked.com or do a search in market for 1-click root. Read HERE about it. IDK if thats why, but have you tried fix apk UID mismatches. I think its found under Other in amonRA recovery.
i will try those ideas tomorrow. thank you. i heard of the 1-click root. but i heard its a virus and could possible ruin your phone, i could be wrong but its just a something i saw.

Thanks for sharing, others have reported similar results. Thankfully mine is fine as it is. Stock ROM rooted.
I was wondering, since I'm rooted running stock ROM and I wanted to do a factory reset, can I just reset to factory settings and still be rooted or do I have to root again?

but doing factory reset will erase both? I used superoneclick and I thought it was permanent root? What are ppl talking about when they say they want to return phone to tmobile but they have to unroot. So I can just go straight to settings> privacy> factory reset, click it and it'll delete all my installed apps, revert me back to how it was out of the box, but still be rooted with the necessary apps like superuser installed?
I got to many apps no memory and somethings draining my battery quick, so definitely I need to reformat...

+1 yes sir
Battery is running way better. I am getting 10-12 hours on a full charge, Using it in the same ways I was using it before the factory reset. I also mostly on WI-FI at home and at work.
Tonight I try just my phones data no WI-FI. That way I see if the 4G kills the battery quicker.

If you do not do a backup does that matter as far as apps? I would assume that once you log back into your account you'll have access to those apps. I don't have any custom settings just running rooted stock.

I went through with this, and my battery last way longer because I don't have all those apps. Infact without Juice Defender, I'm getting even better battery life. I also reformatted both internal and external memory. The phone feels bare, and I'm just gonna install things I actually find useful.
Again I notice better battery life without Juice defender, don't know if juice defender was draining more battery or not but better battery life.
I am aslo running only what's needed also. I have apps backup in my SD card. That I can install at any time.
No rebooting yet or phone being unresponsive.
It did freeze once because it was really hot @ 120°F.

Google now issues

Okay, my issues started when I switched to the baked rom. I had gotten google now working fairly well on ICS. After I switched the voice recognition just hears me as background noise. It will listen then just go back to the tap the mic to speak screen. No searching. No crashing. Nothing. I even tried switching to cyanogenmod 10. Exact same issue. I think the offline voice files might be corrupted. Does anyone know if I might be right and if so how I can delete them?
P.S.- I always do a clean install. Factory reset, clear data in CWM, clear cache (for redundancy), clear dalvik cache.
Thank you in advance.
sincerely
- Someone clearly missing something obvious.
I know that in CM10 they say the issue is because its using the mic on the top of the device instead of the one on the bottom, and the top one is normally for noise cancelling. Try speaking into the mic at the top and see if it helps. Beyond that I can't give you any help.

You are still dirty flashing. A clean flash involves formatting system. That is where old rom is located and why phone will reboot after factory reset, dalvic and cache wipe. A clean wipe will not boot since there is no longer an OS/ROM on device.
I know what a clean install is. I have been doing it. I tried his idea AFTER I did another clean install and it worked fine.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
What prdog1 is telling you is that you are actually not doing a clean install. Factory reset/data does not remove the original rom partioned on your sd. In order to have a true clean install you need to go into mounts+storage and format the system. That removes the old rom so flashing the new one is truly a clean install. Your technically doing a dirty flash still, which is generally fine when loading the same rom base.

This is the reason many people have problems that the majority don't have. Flashing different rom bases on top of each other can corrupt the rom and no one can troubleshoot the answer unless it is a rom bug that the majority has. Factory reset, cache and dalvic wipes help eliminate apps and data problems.

[Q] Rebooting Problem

So my phone has been randomly rebooting and sleeping indefinitely quite often over the past two weeks. I was just wondering if there is a simple fix to this that won't require any backup or anything. It isn't a huge deal to me right now, and if it requires backing up things then I will probably just wait until I'm ready to do a full ROM wipe and re-install.
Why can't you do a backup in your recovery. You must have a custom recovery if you're thinking of a clean rom install. Back it up and do a factory reset.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app
As I stated in the original post, if there isn't a solution that doesn't require a backup, then I will just do a clean install when I get around to it. Right now, I'm just looking for general trouble shooting that may lead to a quick fix.

Do a full wipe and reinstall with a updated ROM or new DL of the old one. Backup your contacts of course but if you want to do something simple then boot into recovery a wipe cache then dalvik then fix permissions

no, you will lose nothing when clearing both caches, it cleans the cobwebs out, very safe todo and recommended, but wont solve every issue, recomendation is to start fresh with the issues you have, what rom are you on now

I figured as much, but I just really don't feel like doing a full, fresh start. I'm not sure exactly which ROM anymore. I've been running it for over 6 months and I think it was basically a beta type thing when I installed. To be perfectly honest, I'm surprised it lasted this long without a full wipe.

As it turns out, my problem was a usb cable that was shorting out. I finally noticed that it happened almost every time I plugged the cable in to charge the phone. As soon as I plugged it in, the phone would freeze and then black screen.

Force Close Loop (Bricked?)

Hey Guys - I am out of ideas and think my run with the charge might be coming to an end.
My phone is running FP8 stock ROM, rooted, with some apps frozen using TiBu. I have not issues with this set up since the update was pushed. I used tweak for a year or so, then went back to stock for FP8.
A few days ago my phone started to act weird. Widgets were not updating, apps randomly force closing. It was annoying but still usable. I decided to do a factory reset and then everything hit the fan. When I boot up the phone every app on my phone force closes and it is not usable. The "Setup Wizard" also force closes so I can not even get past that.
I have tried flashing other ROMs including Eclipse, tweaked, EP4 with pit, etc.The flash is successful but the force closes persist. I have also tried wiping data through stock recovery and CWM, but I do not think it works. I still see force close errors when the phone boots of apps that should have been wiped (twitter,TiBu, etc.). Anything else I can try? Pretty desperate as it looks like this thing might be toast.
Cliffs
Phone acting weird, reset data multiple times and everything force closes. Phone is not usable at all.
Tried wiping data but does not seem to work, downloaded apps still force close
Flashed different ROMS (both stock w/ pit and custom)
Still force closing. Help?
If the force closes are persisting even though data is wiped, you may have something nasty sticking around through dirty flashes (assuming you're flashing over the old). Make sure you clear all caches and if that doesn't work, it's a shot in the dark but you may want to try formatting the system partition through CWM and then reinstalling FP8 or whatever custom ROM you want. Whatever you do have backups ready...

Thanks for the idea. I am pretty sure I have already tried this but through CWM I will clear cache, davlik cache, data, and format system then try a flash of stock with .pit
Like you said, it seems like whatever is causing this is still sticking around even after all this clearing/flashing. Is there any way to clear these things through adb? Or would getting a log be worth my time?
If all else fails try odin.

I have tried flashing ROMS (stock and custom) through ODIN and to no avail. I am able to flash but it still does not overwrite the corrupted data. I still get force close errors for downloaded apps that should have been erased/over written. Even formatted my SD card just to be sure and didn't help.
Seems like my only option may be to somehow find and delete the data through ADB. Clearing through CVM and stock recovery is not doing anything. Problem is I do not know where this old/bad data is!

Never heard of PST when you posted that. Good idea, but I just tried a few flashes and the effect was no different than ODIN/CWM
This problem keeps getting weirder. So sometimes I am able to get through into the phone (even though I get force close pop ups every 2 seconds). I was able to uninstall most of the apps causing the FCs (not all because some are the system apps).
However, everytime the phone reboots the apps come back! Where in the hell are they being cached/stored to just magically re-appear after data wipes/flashes/un-installs. Seems like I have all these corrupted apps that I can not get rid of. Through terminal emulator I cleared data, and davlik but didn't help.

Yea, eventually I can get it to boot but the phone is not usable with all the force closing. The option to clear internal SD only seems to be available for the older ROMS, but I flashed ED1 and cleared it. No luck.

Yep I have turned them off. My settings also get reset however when I clear data, reboot, re flash etc.
Good question about the full EP4 ODIN. I have been using the ones from imnuts website, and have also tried the CWM packages from kvswim's thread in the development section. Tried Eclipse Beta 2 & EP4,EE4,ED1, FP8 stock. I also tried the CM10 ROM just to see if the change to ext file system would do anything. Not sure if any of them are labled as having rom, kernal and radios, but I would imagine at least a few of them are.
No matter what I do, I get outsmarted and all my corruped apps, settings and force closes remain.
I think you can skip activation after flashing ep4 and still get the ota's to get to fp1, fp5 and finally fp8. once there try activation, etc. Keep it purely stock no root. still fc's? IMHO your phone storage is hosed.

To skip activation - on the setup screen click on the Emergency Dial button. Once at the dialer, dial:
*#TESTMODE (or *#83786633)
That will "enable the soft keys", making it so you can then hit home to get to the launcher without activating.

Pretty cool! Didn't know I could do that. However once getting past that just about every app continues to force close including tw launcher.
Being that old apps & settings will continue to be restored after doing everything possible to get rid of them it must be a hardware issue.
Oh well, I will keep the phone around for the hell of it but guess it's time I look into something new.
