Newb to Sensation, thoughts on 4EXT? - HTC Sensation

Is this something I either "want" and or "need" to download for my phone? Just came over from the MyTouch, have already got S=Off, Super CID, perm root...but keep seeing 4EXT all over the place.
Thoughts?

It's just a different recovery - some prefer CWM, others 4EXT
It's all down to personal choice

oh ok, so it's not something that I'll be screwed if I don't download it? Sweet!

no u dont need it, but its a lot simpler and can be themed which looks good.. its the same as CWM but its touch controlled..

Is there a guide anywhere to install it that I'm just missing or have overlooked?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1377759
just flash it in CWM

For me its better than CWM. Its easier to use plus touch screen optimized.
For installation, just download it and then read the instruction that is in the zip.

Also, 4EXT seems to allow options to install Mod's when flashing the ROM like the Bravia Engine Mod or a different speed kernel.
Don't think ClockworkMod can do this (not yet at least)

This is why you need it.
I mean you don't NEED it, until you use the fancy features, then you won't be able to imagine life without it.
Some of the newest options during flash are fully GUI menus that make selecting options SUPER easy.

[Q] ClockWorkMod vs 4EXT vs TeamWin Recovery

Hi
I am currently using ClockWorkMod 5.0.2.0 on my Sensation, and have not really been following the discussions on the new recoveries from TeamWin and 4EXT.
So I am wondering; is ClockWorkMod not developed anymore?
What are the benefits of changing to a different Recovery?
Prettier GUI, ability to theme, and better user interface aren't really valid point to me. I do not spend that much time in recovery, and do not find the ClockWorkMod to be any hassle at all.
Any insights or personal experiences are appreciated.

CWR has everything you need to the average user - erasing partitions, zeroing the cache, creating backups and installing zip from SD. I do not see a point to go to another recovery mod.
I don't see it to but ARHD developer change all of us using this rom to EXT4 so i am happy with that now i

There seems to a common confusion between the ext4 filesystem and the 4ext recovery. Although the OP incorrectly stated ext4, what is actually being discussed is 4ext.
The ext4 filesystem is used by ARHD, not the 4ext recovery. No responsible dev that I know of includes a recovery image in their ROM.
*edit* I didn't realize that ARHD does flash the recovery image. I'm not sure why the dev cares what recovery people use though.

Well there is a recovery image included in ARHD, 4EXT.
Thank you for pointing out my typo, and sorry for any confusion it might have caused.
I installed 4EXT trial version, and it looks great, actually.
I'm not sure I'm going to buy it (even though it doesn't cost much)
For me, ClockWorkMod works just fine and its no problem at all to perform the tasks I need during a upgrade/new flash.
But does anyone know if CWM is still developed?

You don't need to buy it! The recovery itself and even the recovery updater is free. The only thing you can buy is the recovery control app which allows you to do multiple recovery actions within the rom.. You can try it 3days for free! I love it :-D

[Q] Flashing ROM Mods

When I want to install a bunch of mods to customise a ROM e.g. remove rosie nav bar, remove lockscreen nav bar, remove clock background, etc, do I have to do a reboot after I flash each mod? Or can I flash them one after the other in recovery and just do a single reboot?
I've always flashed them one by one. But I know if you have the fully featured version of 4EXT Recovery Control, you can flash as many as you want at once. Check the link below for more info.

Thanks for the link/help.

can i flash lot of files without rebooting in CWM??
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
It depends from what do you want to flash. I've flashed CRT + APM + Battery mod + EQS in one go on ARHD Sense 3.0 ROM with both CWM and 4EXT. I had no problems, but you know, "if in doubt, leave it out" Make a nandroid backup, try it and you'll know next time if you can do it or not
All the mods I mentioned in my first post installed fine without rebooting between each flash.
Why do some people still use CWM instead of 4EXT? Are there some things that CWM can do that 4EXT can't? Or is it just for use with older firmware/ROMS?

How to use "ROM Manager" with 4ext

Hi all,
is there any posibility to use ROM Manger with 4ext revcovery?
ROM manager is for clockwork mod. If you use 4ext, there is no need for ROM manager. Btw. 4ext is a lot more functional
Sent my thoughts to your head with XDA App
It true for "recovery". But I would like to use ROM Manager to download "google apps" and ROMs

I think for download purposes you can "fool" the ROM manager choosing "manual Flash Override" in settings menu

You can still use ROM manager to download whatever you want. And flash those files from Recovery. You don't have to have CWM installed for that... downloading stuff is a function of the app, not the recovery. For all recovery related purposes, 4EXT will do just fine... When you choose reboot into recovery, you'll still be taken to 4EXT Recovery.
Go ahead, test it out and post your observations here.
While you can download ROMs through ROM Manager, you cannot perform functions like flash ROMs and reboot to recovery through ROM Manager while using 4EXT recovery. Use the 4EXT Recovery Control App
The reason is that Koush (the guy who made CWM and ROM Manager) used specific code in his app/recovery that enabled them to perform these functions. madmaxx (the guy who made 4Ext) couldn't use this code, as Koush didn't reply to his PM's asking for permission. So, he designed his own app with different code. IMO, it's better and a LOT more functional than ROM Manager

That's right. If you, for some reason, OP still wants to use ROM manager instead of 4EXT Recovery Control, he can use ROM Manager to download whatever he wants, then boot into recovery, and flash the add-ons from recovery. (I understand that's what the OP was asking for... to be able to download ROMs etc using ROM Manager). Foe full control however, i would obviously recommend 4EXT Recovery Control.

digging up a bit of an old thread here but if you were to use rom managers add zip feature to load a chain of say 4 zips to flash would that work and then flash through 4ext. if not does 4ext control have that function?

[Q] clockwork question?

I just rooted, s-off etc, & when I tried to make my back up after root through rom manager it said I needed the latest version of CWM. 5.0.6 I think (the orangish yellow one), but during my soff root process I installed 5.0.8 something (the blue one)? Well I did the backup & it installed the other older cwm. Do I need to change that as I'm going to be selecting an ics rom? Also am I supposed to install the extra now or does that not really matter at this point? Just wondering what to do next. Any advice and or links would help. Thanks to all again, you guys have all been awesome & helpful, it is so great to back in a forum that isn't so hostile! Lol... I won't call any out by name.....
The recovery always stays, you can update it with newer version ofc, but when you choose GB or ICS the only thing that matters is the FIRMWARE.
okay, I just updated back to the most current cwm touch, the blue one. Ive got all my backups in order, now is ext4 better than cwm? does anyone have a reccomendation for wich you use?

4EXT is the one i use and AFAIK it supports the interactive installer, which many DEVs here are using, but can't tell you about CWM!
pretty easy:
what i heard was that cmw cant but 4ext can give u choices if the dev gives u them. like u wanna install 1.2 ghz kernel or 1.5 cmw auto says 1.2 but with 4ext u can choose

Aroma is a dev tool allowing a graphical user interface for users installing custom roms. It is customized by a dev to allow users the ability to add/change/modify rom features and settings. For our device there are 3 roms installed through aroma though only 2 give us the option to perform a wipe android revolution hd by mike1986 and omega by indie when running the script from your recovery it launches aroma installer and both of the mentioned roms give you the option of wiping your device before continuing with setup. Be careful of which recovery you use, most users agree the newer cwm recoveries dont like aroma and freeze on some screens. Not a huge deal as this just requires a reboot which will bring you back to cwm. The original high on android from the android dev how to root guide by zedomax seems to work well and from personal experience i can tell you twrp works as well. Hope this helps

First off, I have the N8013, not sure what you have. I found your post because i couldn't figure out what this damn aroma thing everyone is talking about is. so thanks for your response on that.
But i have a question, what version on TWRP are/were you using? Did you just install it from goomanager or rommanager(clockwork) or did you have to flash from odin?
I'm not excited about using this high on android recovery, so when you said you used twrp i figured i would ask.

Some RECOVERY had problems with aroma instaler. I tried a lot of them CWM, TRW etc. but only one of them have no problem when I instaling something where was the aroma been. This Recovery is in my signature. Here : HighOnAndroid Recovery
Even KitKat custom ROMs I flashed without problem.
It's my opinion only, but I'm very satisfied with it! Peter
