When I want to install a bunch of mods to customise a ROM e.g. remove rosie nav bar, remove lockscreen nav bar, remove clock background, etc, do I have to do a reboot after I flash each mod? Or can I flash them one after the other in recovery and just do a single reboot?
I've always flashed them one by one. But I know if you have the fully featured version of 4EXT Recovery Control, you can flash as many as you want at once. Check the link below for more info.

Ah, cool. On the 4EXT page is says "Flash as many zip files you want in one go".
Thanks for the link/help.

can i flash lot of files without rebooting in CWM??
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
It depends from what do you want to flash. I've flashed CRT + APM + Battery mod + EQS in one go on ARHD Sense 3.0 ROM with both CWM and 4EXT. I had no problems, but you know, "if in doubt, leave it out" Make a nandroid backup, try it and you'll know next time if you can do it or not
All the mods I mentioned in my first post installed fine without rebooting between each flash.
Why do some people still use CWM instead of 4EXT? Are there some things that CWM can do that 4EXT can't? Or is it just for use with older firmware/ROMS?

Stock on 2.3.4 hboot 1.18 I rooted with revolutionary, and installed teamwin recovery. I am using the newest CM7 from the rootzwiki I believe. This is what I flashed anyway - update-cm-7.1.0-SelfKANG10-Sensation-signed.zip. Now I am 2.3.7 kernel ver 2.6.35.13_CyanogenMod+ [email protected] #1
ROM Manager app is now on my phone, but it says I need Clockwork recovery to use it. I also read through google and forums that just flashing between ROMs you have to have like same kernels and stuff like that, which I am very noob too.
I'm having Google framework FC issues and no GPS on CM7.
I think I want to switch from CM7 to this MIUI zip I got at MIUI.us - MIUI.us_pyramid_1.12.9.01_Eng_Deo_ZipA_Signed.zip
Which recovery SHOULD I be using? If clockwork is way to go, can I just go to my ROM manager app where it says, "flash Clockwork to this phone"?
If I want to change ROMs, what do I need and NOT need to backup? What exactly is "nandroid" back up, is it better than backup apps? Do I need to backup ROMs, and what exactly is that and what is proper way?
Do I have to wipe then restore everytime? Had some issues with this first time from stock sense to CM7, couldn't get Titanium or mybackup pro to restore my apps, and my contacts are quadrupled in size and organized oddly.
What is the best way to switch ROMs, flashing, ROM Manager, something else?
IF I wanted to run only one ROM for lets say 6 months, after I flash it, can I delete that zip from sd card, and phone will still work?

I personally don't use ROM Manager but use ClockworkMod alot. There is a thread here on CWM 5.0.2.0 somewhere, if I remember I'll add it.
Kernels need to be Compatible with the ROM. This compatibility requitement is in terms of Kernel revision (i.e. old Kernel might not work with a newer ROM). More importantly though there are two basic typed of ROM on the Sensation, namely Sense and AOSP based ones. These two varieties have completely different Kernels so you will need one from that branch. For example Faux makes two Kernel types AOSP (e.g. for CM7 and MIUI) and all the Sense derivatives.

The Nandroid backup performs a backup of the various phone partitions onto the SD-Card. This allows for a point in time backup and recovery of the phone.
ALWAYS do a Nandroid backup before playing with a new ROM or Kernel, JUST IN CASE **** happens.

Depends if you want a Sense or ASOP based phone.
Ok ill try to hit all the points for you. First you can use any recovery you like (cwm, twrp, 4ext) but Rom manager will only work with cwm. You can get to your recovery 2 ways, either hold the power button and select reboot then recovery (note some roms don't have this) second power off your phone completely and hold vol down and power until you get to hboot and select recovery (note fastboot must be turned off in settings). Personally I don't recommend using Rom manager to flash your roms go to the recovery itself.
Flashing roms: it is recommended to wipe data wipe cache and wipe dalvik cache (its sometimes found under advanced like in cwm) and when you get that part down it isn't always neccesary but wipe system partition... Never ever wipe anything else... Unless your cleaning your battery stats but let's stick to the basics.
If you are just flashing an update to a Rom sometimes you don't have to wipe anything (i.e. cm7 v9 flashing to cm7 v10) but anytime you change Rom bases always wipe. Especially if you are going from cm7 to a sense 3 Rom and also sense 3.5 and vice versa. Also there are several superwipe files from several devs. I suggest using one of these. All you do is flash it like a Rom in recovery. They automatically wipe for you.
Kernels are labeled with the base you need I.e cm7 or sense review the kernels threads for more info.
Next, if you haven't wiped and tried a couple Roms that explains the contact problems and GPS issues.
A nandroid put simply is just a backup of your current Rom. Go to backup in your recovery and backup your current Rom. Is saves every little bit of your current Rom. You need to do this in case something goes wrong or if you don't like the new one. Then you can simply restore it if you need to.
After you flash a Rom it is in your phones memory. You can delete it off your sdcard no problems, unless you want to flash it again at another time. You can also delete old nandroids if you need to just keep at least the last one you made. They are large sometimes.
I have used about every Rom here I suggest mikes hdrevolution or cdtdroids Roms if you don't want cm7 (which is often referred to as aosp) if you want to try another aosp Rom try hypersensation it works good too.
And you used this forum perfectly asking questions in the q&a good job some people don't get that.
Edit: he beat me to the answers while I was typing lol. Also I hate autocorrect had to clean up my post hope it didn't confuse you.

Ok, this forum is awesome, and I will defintely check out the other forums for kernels and other topics. I am understanding most of your replies, but as you see I get other questions from some answers lol. I did just wipe everything(data factory reset) again, and installed the MIUI and when I signed in my google on setup, all my apps started downloading from market and my contacts were all there in a little bit better fashion than before. Also, when I put CM7 that was my FIRST ROM and immediately after my FIRST time attempting and successfully doing a root s-off. Now MIUI makes my 2nd ROM. I'm sure if I hang around here enough I'll get the hang of it all and start to figure it all out better. I vultured around these forums for 4 months with a stock phone before I did anything, and my phone isn't bricked so I'm happy about that.
For some more detail try checking out the stickies in the development section there are some awesome guides and answers there too.

Hi all,
is there any posibility to use ROM Manger with 4ext revcovery?
ROM manager is for clockwork mod. If you use 4ext, there is no need for ROM manager. Btw. 4ext is a lot more functional

I think for download purposes you can "fool" the ROM manager choosing "manual Flash Override" in settings menu

You can still use ROM manager to download whatever you want. And flash those files from Recovery. You don't have to have CWM installed for that... downloading stuff is a function of the app, not the recovery. For all recovery related purposes, 4EXT will do just fine... When you choose reboot into recovery, you'll still be taken to 4EXT Recovery.
Go ahead, test it out and post your observations here.
While you can download ROMs through ROM Manager, you cannot perform functions like flash ROMs and reboot to recovery through ROM Manager while using 4EXT recovery. Use the 4EXT Recovery Control App
The reason is that Koush (the guy who made CWM and ROM Manager) used specific code in his app/recovery that enabled them to perform these functions. madmaxx (the guy who made 4Ext) couldn't use this code, as Koush didn't reply to his PM's asking for permission. So, he designed his own app with different code. IMO, it's better and a LOT more functional than ROM Manager

That's right. If you, for some reason, OP still wants to use ROM manager instead of 4EXT Recovery Control, he can use ROM Manager to download whatever he wants, then boot into recovery, and flash the add-ons from recovery. (I understand that's what the OP was asking for... to be able to download ROMs etc using ROM Manager). Foe full control however, i would obviously recommend 4EXT Recovery Control.

digging up a bit of an old thread here but if you were to use rom managers add zip feature to load a chain of say 4 zips to flash would that work and then flash through 4ext. if not does 4ext control have that function?

yup i'm instantly in love with it, it fixed an issue where charging while phone was off automatically booted recovery too
Is this something I either "want" and or "need" to download for my phone? Just came over from the MyTouch, have already got S=Off, Super CID, perm root...but keep seeing 4EXT all over the place.
Thoughts?
It's just a different recovery - some prefer CWM, others 4EXT
It's all down to personal choice

oh ok, so it's not something that I'll be screwed if I don't download it? Sweet!
no u dont need it, but its a lot simpler and can be themed which looks good.. its the same as CWM but its touch controlled..
Is there a guide anywhere to install it that I'm just missing or have overlooked?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1377759
just flash it in CWM
For me its better than CWM. Its easier to use plus touch screen optimized.
For installation, just download it and then read the instruction that is in the zip.

Also, 4EXT seems to allow options to install Mod's when flashing the ROM like the Bravia Engine Mod or a different speed kernel.
Don't think ClockworkMod can do this (not yet at least)

This is why you need it.
I mean you don't NEED it, until you use the fancy features, then you won't be able to imagine life without it.
Some of the newest options during flash are fully GUI menus that make selecting options SUPER easy.

What recovery are you using? The HTC Sensation unlocked by using HTC Dev does not let you flash kernels through recovery, except for the 4EXT recovery. In order for ROMS to work you need to use the 4EXT recovery with Smart Flash enabled. To do this in 4EXT, go to tools and press enable Smart Flash. This behavior will only be temporary, but here is a more in depth guide that includes how to make it permanent: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1631861.

worked like a charm.
Hello, long time reader, first time poster. I know about rooting, and installing roms and all that good stuff (had a galaxy s2 but odin bricked it). So I'm new to the sensation, and it's quite different from my previous device. My problem is that when I install a custom rom, the phone will boot and all about after about 30 seconds will freeze and restart.
Okay so these are the steps that I followed:
-Used the KGS Utility and chose "s-off"
-Followed all the prompts everything worked out fine.
-Following that I used it to install a custom recovery.
-Followed the prompts everything worked fine.
-Then I used Revolutionary CWM to flash SuperUser.
-App was there on reboot.
-Then I downloaded the AOKP "Initiate Your Swagger"[4.1.2] Rom
-Put it on my SD card and flashed it (after wiping and backing up)
-When the phone boots the setup wizard starts.
-I follow the prompt and when it gets to "Just a sec" the phone freezes then restarts.
Don't know what the problem is here.
I get the same problem when trying to flash CM10. The phone will boot, but then after 20-30 seconds will reboot.

Be VERY specific and give a step by step detail of what you are doing to install. Give WAY more detail than you have. And put the detail in a list, not a giant paragraph.
Then we'll look at it and see what's missing.

Sorry about that. Edited my first post. I hope that is enough.
When you say it boots for 20 seconds, what exaclty for you mean.
Does it just replay the boot animation over and over? Or does it actually bring you to a home screen with the status bar and everything for 20 seconds before the reboot? That's a very important difference in diagnosing this one.
Also try installing 4EXT recovery. CWM has been known to cause weirdness with AOSP roms. Plus you may have an older version of CWM thatcan't properly install the newer roms. If you used a .zip in bootloader to flash CWM yuou probably had an older version. I have a special place in my heart for CWM too, but 4EXT is just so much better for the Sensation. (Different recoveries ar ebetter or worse on different devices.)
If you properly installed superuser on your stock rom that you have a nandroid backup for, installing 4EXT is super easy. Just restore the nandroid, which should boot up without problems, download the 4EXT app from the play store, and use the app to install teh latest version of the recovery. No need for ADB or flashing in bootloader. Then try a full wipe and fresh install of AOKP from 4EXT.

It boots up to the homescreen (with no signal) then it reboots.
I will try 4EXT and post my results. Thanks for your help thus far!
EDIT: Tryed installing 4EXT now when I try to boot into recovery it shows the HTC spash screen, then it reboots back the homescreen. So I think my recovery is gone.
EDIT 2: So I got the 4EXT recovery installed. But the ROMs are giving me the same issues (no change). I also noticed as before, when the custom roms boot there isn't any cellular signal.
