[Q] ClockWorkMod vs 4EXT vs TeamWin Recovery - HTC Sensation

Hi
I am currently using ClockWorkMod 5.0.2.0 on my Sensation, and have not really been following the discussions on the new recoveries from TeamWin and 4EXT.
So I am wondering; is ClockWorkMod not developed anymore?
What are the benefits of changing to a different Recovery?
Prettier GUI, ability to theme, and better user interface aren't really valid point to me. I do not spend that much time in recovery, and do not find the ClockWorkMod to be any hassle at all.
Any insights or personal experiences are appreciated.

CWR has everything you need to the average user - erasing partitions, zeroing the cache, creating backups and installing zip from SD. I do not see a point to go to another recovery mod.

I don't see it to but ARHD developer change all of us using this rom to EXT4 so i am happy with that now i

There seems to a common confusion between the ext4 filesystem and the 4ext recovery. Although the OP incorrectly stated ext4, what is actually being discussed is 4ext.
The ext4 filesystem is used by ARHD, not the 4ext recovery. No responsible dev that I know of includes a recovery image in their ROM.
*edit* I didn't realize that ARHD does flash the recovery image. I'm not sure why the dev cares what recovery people use though.

Well there is a recovery image included in ARHD, 4EXT.

Thank you for pointing out my typo, and sorry for any confusion it might have caused.
I installed 4EXT trial version, and it looks great, actually.
I'm not sure I'm going to buy it (even though it doesn't cost much)
For me, ClockWorkMod works just fine and its no problem at all to perform the tasks I need during a upgrade/new flash.
But does anyone know if CWM is still developed?
4EXT is based on CWM it says...

You don't need to buy it! The recovery itself and even the recovery updater is free. The only thing you can buy is the recovery control app which allows you to do multiple recovery actions within the rom.. You can try it 3days for free! I love it :-D

[Q] how to download 4ext recovery?

Nooby question ik but where can ia ctually get it, ive searched the internet and only found update for it and control. How can i actually dl it straight to my phone -.-
Install the updater (HERE) and with the updater you install ext4 ;-)
If you buy the app from the market, which you don't *have* to do, just run the program and it walks you through the install, and will also let you know when an updated version is out. It's painless.
Since this is a 4ext thread... maybe someone can tell me where 4ext actually stores its backups on the SDcard?
I found my 2 backups that I made using Clockwork and before I installed a new ROM, I made another one using the 4ext Touch Recovery.
Yet, I'm unable to find where that backup is on my SDCard.
Help would be appreciated.

Lol. In the same folder as cwm backups, /sdcard/clockwork/backup
it uses clockwork folders and settings this is why it can run side by side with clockwork

Weird. I've only seen 2 backups there and I was almost 100% certain I made a 3rd one before I flashed the new ROM. Guess I didn't. Thanks though

Newb to Sensation, thoughts on 4EXT?

Is this something I either "want" and or "need" to download for my phone? Just came over from the MyTouch, have already got S=Off, Super CID, perm root...but keep seeing 4EXT all over the place.
Thoughts?
It's just a different recovery - some prefer CWM, others 4EXT
It's all down to personal choice

oh ok, so it's not something that I'll be screwed if I don't download it? Sweet!
no u dont need it, but its a lot simpler and can be themed which looks good.. its the same as CWM but its touch controlled..
Is there a guide anywhere to install it that I'm just missing or have overlooked?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1377759
just flash it in CWM
For me its better than CWM. Its easier to use plus touch screen optimized.
For installation, just download it and then read the instruction that is in the zip.

Also, 4EXT seems to allow options to install Mod's when flashing the ROM like the Bravia Engine Mod or a different speed kernel.
Don't think ClockworkMod can do this (not yet at least)

This is why you need it.
I mean you don't NEED it, until you use the fancy features, then you won't be able to imagine life without it.
Some of the newest options during flash are fully GUI menus that make selecting options SUPER easy.

Jellytime v7 not booting

Hi,
as the title says I cant get jellytime to boot on my DS. I did a full wipe and flashed boot image, since I am HTCdev unlocked and s-on. Do any of you experience the same problem/ is there a solution to this problem?
I would have posted this in the jellytime thread, but i have not met my 10 posts quotum yet.
Thanks :fingers-crossed:
Stupid question, but did you flash the Rom between full wipe and flash boot.img?

yes is wiped, then installed the rom and then flashed boot image. also downloaded the rom again, and tried a couple clean installs but no luck. im sure i use the right boot image.
Upgrade your hboot, goodness me. they are tutorials all over the development and general section. I personally lean to revolutionary 7.x

my hboot is 2.00.002, i thought that was good. am i wrong?
did you download from the OP link or a mirror provided in the thread, as I read there was issue with corrupt mirror in thread.
I suggest that you consider re-downloading or check md5sum of your download , could be you corrupt which would explain.
i checked md5sum and others who downloaded from there were able to boot, so i dont think that is the issue

That's problem with s-on. Did you reflash boot image in fastboot? fastboot flash boot boot.img (from jellytime.zip you just installed, first install jellytime.zip and than reflash boot.img in fastboot, it works. If you want to restore previous version, you need to reflash boot.img from that version as S-ON phone cannot write boot partition in recovery.)
Try doing full wipe, then flash boot.img and flash the rom last. That should work. Try using boot.img flasher software. It worked for me

Or, if you have 4ext touch recovery and choosed the format all ( except sd ) function , that could be the problem. I noticed that, 4ext touch recovery's format all function sometimes didn't work properly! In that case you have to format the partitions individually. It happened to me with cooldroid. I used the format all function and sense kept crashing. When I formatted the partitions individually it worked!

I've personally been using 4ext for over a year and have never experienced the problem you describe, I've probably used the format all (excluding sd) option hundreds of times...
if you genuinely believe there is an issue then report it on the 4ext thread
Sywepd form my DsereiS
It tought it's a common issue because I am not the only one, who experienced this That's the reason why I suggested to wipe individually

I'm by no means having a go, just pushing the point as max the creator of 4ext would be keen to get any feedback on this issue..if it is one.
Who else has experienced the problem, do you have any thread references urls?

How to Switch from TWRP to ClockWorkMod?

Hello, I'm needing a bit of advice on what to do when switching from my current recovry, TWRP, to ClockWorkMod. I do realize that some say it was never ported over right to the One X, but I'm needing to use it to test a theme for a dev that uses Universal Flasher. I'm pretty sure I can just go into the CWM app and click "Install CWM" but I'd like to make sure I don't corrupt my recovery If anyone could help me that'd be great!
*Edit* Whoops, I didn't realize that the One X was not officially supported. So seeing that, could I just flash the CWM recovery.zip in TWRP and then again once I'm in CWM to make sure it sticks?
The theme is here if you'd like to take a look- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1843805

Yes, but could you please elaborate on that? I understand people think it was never properly ported to our phone, but I'm needing to use it to test a theme for a dev. The only reason I'm wanting to use CWM is that his theme uses Universal Flasher, which isn't supported by TWRP.

sure you can overwrite twrp by flashing cwm, but why would that theme only be flashable through universal flasher ??
if you're gonna go to cwm better make a nand backup and a full backup of your sd and pull all of it onto your computer. CWM on hox has some unpredictable reactions.
Here's your answer : you don't want to ..If u want I will laugh when u accidently f up and sd card gets wiped and u can't mount and have to reflash twrp

I actually found in the CWM forum for the One X that one guy who has an AT&T version of the One X, like me, tried using CWM and erased EVERYTHING on the phone rendering it useless. I'm really hesitant with this now. I'll contact the dev and see if he can somehow make it work on TWRP (doubt it, but it's worth a shot)
And the international cwm is mot for us that's for endeavor you'd have to dig up a old thread somewhere in this forum ..but don't install the one from Rom manager

let me repeat what i said earlier: if you cannot be talked out of it. just make a nand backup and a full sd backup and pull it on your computer, that way if something happens you can just restore everything, just seems like a lot of work to test a theme, must be some THEME
I pm'd the dev of that theme he said flash cwm to flash theme then just flash back twrp. Im about to do it soon to flash the theme. Id backup sdcard first though.

Aroma is a dev tool allowing a graphical user interface for users installing custom roms. It is customized by a dev to allow users the ability to add/change/modify rom features and settings. For our device there are 3 roms installed through aroma though only 2 give us the option to perform a wipe android revolution hd by mike1986 and omega by indie when running the script from your recovery it launches aroma installer and both of the mentioned roms give you the option of wiping your device before continuing with setup. Be careful of which recovery you use, most users agree the newer cwm recoveries dont like aroma and freeze on some screens. Not a huge deal as this just requires a reboot which will bring you back to cwm. The original high on android from the android dev how to root guide by zedomax seems to work well and from personal experience i can tell you twrp works as well. Hope this helps

First off, I have the N8013, not sure what you have. I found your post because i couldn't figure out what this damn aroma thing everyone is talking about is. so thanks for your response on that.
But i have a question, what version on TWRP are/were you using? Did you just install it from goomanager or rommanager(clockwork) or did you have to flash from odin?
I'm not excited about using this high on android recovery, so when you said you used twrp i figured i would ask.

Some RECOVERY had problems with aroma instaler. I tried a lot of them CWM, TRW etc. but only one of them have no problem when I instaling something where was the aroma been. This Recovery is in my signature. Here : HighOnAndroid Recovery
Even KitKat custom ROMs I flashed without problem.
It's my opinion only, but I'm very satisfied with it! Peter
