[Q] Help regarding my first windows phone - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been a symbian fanboy and I found windows phone very interesting.
I decided to buy a windowsphone.
What I found after following windowsphone for sometime is that this os has some restrictions.
some of those restrictions like bt file sharing, usb mass storage mode etc can be lifted if you can unlock your phone completely.
I decided to buy 2nd gen phones like lumia 800 so that I can unlock them using chevron labs.but there seems to be no more new tokens.
but as of now there is no way to jailbreak 2nd gen phones.
So I decided to go for samsung focus.
what I fear now is will it be upgraded to windowsphone 8 or not?
will there be any method coming in the future to unlock 2nd gen phones?
I like to mod and install unsigned apps .
please suggest me friends what to do?

Well, there are no promises in hacking. It seems you have done your research so you kinda answered your own questions as much as anyone else could. Nobody knows what devices will get WP8 since MS hasnt stated anything one way or the other offcially. Basically if you want to mod to the fullest extent you need a first gen htc or samsung, to a lesser extent a second gen samsung should do fine. If you want to be sure to get WP8 wait untill MS says what will and what won't get it.

So far, all Windows phones have gotten all of the signifficant updates. We'll see how long this holds true, but the (admittedly short) history of the OS says that even though some devices may be a bit later than others, everybody gets the major updates. Microsoft seems to have committed to this pretty strongly. My guess is that they'll ship updates for all phones sold within a two-year period of the update coming out, since that's where people will be in contracts (I know some places do three-year contracts, but at the rate tech advances, three years is a long time).
The Focus was still on sale just a few months ago. I fully expect it to get updates through at least Windows Phone 8.5 (late 2013, by the current twice-annual-significant-update schedule). No guarantees, of course, but that's my guess.
Additionally, you should be able to send updates via CAB files even if the phone falls out of official support. The firmware will get out of date, which might make some features of the new OSes less valuable (for example, Mango added the managed Compass API, but a firmware update was needed to make it usable). Bugfixes and major features will probably keep on coming, though. If nothing else, the Samsung gen1 phones have unlockable bootloaders, so you can install custom ROMs. The fact that you can run WP7 build 8107 on the HD2 - a phone that wasn't supposed to run WP7 at all - suggests that the Focus will probably be viable for quite some time.

I decided to go for samsung focus.
but I have a small doubt.
I havr read that windows break project does not work if firmware version is kk2.
so if I get focus with kk2 firmware,is there any way to downgrade to previous firmware and apply windows break?
if I get focus without mango(which might be the case in my country),after applying windows break and updating to mango, will focus be interop-locked again?
is the interop-unlock and bootloader unlock same?
if so how to unlock bootloader and install custom roms?
sorry for barrage of questions as iam a noob.
any help woukd be appreciated?

It's possible to downgrade the firmware, yes. Just flash an older (stock) ROM onto your phone.
Mango will reset your dev-unlock status, which probably means losing both interop-unlock and dev-unlock. However, you can interop-unlock after upgrading to Mango (interop-lock didn't even exist pre-Mango).
To avoid getting KK2 by accident, you should stop the update process as soon after getting Mango as you can. Then, use WindowBreak. You cna then install the remaining updates if you want to, I guess, but I'd suggest avoiding KK2 until a really good reason for it shows up.
Interop-unlock is completley different from bootloader unlock, though both are (indirectly) ways to get more access. Unlocking the bootloader is required for installing custom ROMs, which typically come "full-unlocked" and can do things not even possible with interop-unlock (at this time). Interop-unlock lets you install lots of homebrew apps, and lets you install homebrew apps that call into high-privilege drivers as a way to break out of the sandbox.
To look at it a different way, Interop-unlock is required in order to use an app like WP7 Root Tools. A custom ROM (requires an unlocked bootloader) has everything run as root, so WP7 Root Tools is hardly needed (though still useful just for the browser/editor tools).
For unlocking the bootloader and using custom ROMs, see the DFT threads on the Dev&Hacking sub-forum. In particular: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1485569

thanks mate you have been so helpful to me.
btw how to stop updation process just after mango so that kk2 fw wont be installed on my phone?
will kk2 be shown as separate update or does it come with mango?

I think most the chefs turn the auto update off. I could be wrong, but my phone has not auto updated. I am using Nextgen ROM.

Updates are installed in order. After each one, the Zune software will check for more updates. You can cancel the update process at any time except when the phone is actually being flashed. There's a cancel button on the Zune software, or you can even just pull the USB cable. Since the updating process involve multiple reboots of the phone, and each one takes some time, it should be pretty easy to catch if you're paying attention.
KK2 is usually, though not always, pushed with 8107. It should not be pushed with 7720, which came out many months before KK2. 7720 is the first release Mango build. I recommend stopping after 7720, though 7740 may also be OK.

Currently both Rogers and ATT have not pushed the KK2 firmware to the Focus, only the Omnia 7 has had the newest firmware pushed to it so you should be fine. If you plan on installing a custom ROM I DO suggest fully updating to 8107 via Zune to get the most upto date radio and then flashing the custom ROM to get the best battery/signal ect. (I suggest starting with the Rogers 7004 firmware since it updates all the way to 8107 via Zune where as the ATT one does not, as long as you have a v1.3 Focus it will flash fine on an ATT phone)
EDIT: also if you want a nice clean starting point to start you modding on your focus perhaps you might want to try my ROM posted in my sig below --v

I don't think that Nokia is getting exclusive features from microsoft. And there might be ways to port the nokia software but you never know. So if you're using your phone for navigation I would suggest you buying the nokia as this would give you a legal and good offline navi. Otherwise I'd go for the samsung for freedom reasons.

Sideloading in 2nd generation WP7.5 devices.

I remember back when the 1st generation WP7 handsets were launched, sideloading was a hot topic and everybody discusses about it. Soon after, Chevron came up with an unlock which allowed sideloading and users were happy.
But when 2nd generation WP7.5 handsets were launched, I see virtually no discussions at all about sideloading on these phones, and I think it's a waste. It'd be great to have the discussions going on how this can be done, who can do it, what needs to be available for it to be done. Soon maybe XDA will come up with a way to unlock the 2nd generation handsets and allow sideloading?
Or is XDA almost exclusive to Android already?
Microsoft's official jailbreak tool will be released soon and will be compatible with 2nd generation WP7 devices, so you'll be able to sideload. It won't be free, but I'm almost sure that, after the release, someone will work out how to do It for free.

this thread talks about sideloading on 7.5 for some time now. The only devices which are not covered at the moment are HTCs, but it's just a matter of time.
so, yes, there are discussions here for 2nd generation devices. Sideloading is not a limitation of the hardware version (1st or 2nd generation) but of the OS and people are working on 7.5 and already have solutions for many devices.

Nice. But I wonder if they will set any limitations on that unlock? I'm a bit skeptical because it's Microsoft who locks it, and now it's Microsoft who unlocks it. Not sure if we will enjoy more, or less freedom.

I think the interop-unlock is for first generation devices that come with 7.5? I'm not sure, but according to the instructions it only works if you revert back to NoDo? I think new WP7.5 devices (non-HTC) like Omnia W, Focus S, Lumia 800 may not work because they dont' have NoDo to revert back to? Again I'm not so sure about it...

ChevronWP7 and 7003

Could someone remind me: is ChevronWP7 unlock working on the 7003 build or I need 6541 or earlier builds?
Eh???
I think the 7004 is the true version come with all 1st gen Windows Phone, why you have 7003?
BTW, Chevron WP7 work with 7004 and 7008(pre-Nodo)

Because I'm talking about Samsung Taylor (probably you are also never heard about). It's a free developer's phone sent by Microsoft last year August. Yep, it's 1-st gen but still good and useful phone (especially if you replaced stock 8Gb memory on micro-SD to 16 Gb, and bought extra-life battery. BTW, it stays with 7003 two or three times longer than my Focus with "advanced" battery It also have a ff cam but without drivers )
Unfortunately 7003 is a last firmware MS sent to us, developers (and nobody received update). By the rumors, some late Taylors was shipped with 7004, and some guys are able to update to Mango (however there is no such a thing like flsClean_7004.ffu exists on internet, all handsets was shipped with 7004 onboard).
This handset don't have (or may be I'm mistaken 'cause restore directly 7003 bits, not original or previous release) Diagnosis app so interop-unlock not possible. I've tried ChevronWP7 but w/o success (I can unregister easily but can't register), what's why I'm asking...
P.S. BTW, thanks for reply - if it works on 7004, it should work on 7003 (later MS closed that backdoor... ).
The No-Do Update is the Chevron Fix from Microsoft. People still have the chance to unlock it with Chevron till 7008, then they need to find the way to keep the unlock.
And yes, 7004 wasn't locked version. Give it a try agian.
And a new Zune Cilent is also a problem i think, because there are a lot of people can't use Chevron Unlock because they have the latest version of Zune Software.
Well, i think it is about time to have a real WP7 Phone man, Samsung FOCUS is not a bad choice.

You are inattentive reader, I already have a Focus (of course interop-unlocked, probably will update to Freedom ROM) Leme say, it's time for new, 2-nd gen phones (with ffcam etc.) but my contract will expire next May so I should wait (never paid even penny for handset). BTW, as for Taylor: some people has family members, for example ; also some people feel sorry for trashing working sophisticated electronic devices just because they one year old and 1-st gen

Android on my Windows Phone 7?

I just decided to install mango on my windows phone 7, but now i want to know if there is any way to install any android os on it. I used to like it when i got it but i just hate microsoft the have stabbed me in the back so many times with xbox and this phone. I love android cause the app, wp7 just doesnt have any apps or anything.
This will start a flame war undoubtedly like it always does but....
Basically you cannot install Droid on ANY windows phone 7 yet. Period.
As to the apps? What "must have" apps are you missing?
well, wp7 marketplace for one just doesnt have anything, androids has so much more. everything on wp7 cost money. if i could unlock this stupid thing i would be happier. is there anyway to unlock the HTC Trophy from verizon.
Bump... anyone know who to unlock the HTC Trophy from verizon, model (mwp6985) on firmware 7720 mango. I unlocked it before but thats when i had my developer membership which microsoft banned my account for no reason, one of the reasons i want android.

There are tons of free apps on WP7... the way you write this though suggests you are used to piracy.... That being said though to unlock the Trophy you have to downgrade back to a lower version NoDo or lower probably. I am not very familiar with the Verizon phones.
I came from iOS having previously, and to be honest there may be less apps on the WPMarketplace then either store but I have found I don't need hardly any third party apps to make the phone function on par with what I had before.
Bottom line - if you want an Android sell your WP7 and buy one. I sold my iPhone on eBay to get my Omnia 7 and I'm sure you won't have a problem selling the phone.

I believe the Trophy has the same CPU (QSD8250) the HD2 and Nexus one does, that would probably be the best place to start. You may want to double check on the GPU though. That CPU is also very compatible with the QSD8650 (or at least the opposite is true), but I wouldn't worry about that until you get it ready to boot a ROM on. If you have to modify the radio/baseband or bootloader I wouldn't risk mixing them up there.
Have you checked to see if there's any way to trigger download mode on your phone?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snapdragon_%28system_on_chip%29
The count is less, very less agreed on that but let me know what app you are looking for and I will list it for you. Roll in your requests.
I don't understand why people are always talking about there aren't anny apps for wm7.
The normal apps are there, so whats the problem.
Beside that I think WM7 runs better en smoother than android so you going to mango..
What is "WM7?"
It seems this thread was started under the false pretense of a legitimate question, but it has become very apparent, this is another troll situation where nothing productive to add or question to ask, but to start bs. When asked what specific the "must have" apps are they missing, they cannot answer. such typical crap...
If you really felt such hate towards microsoft and you have been "stabbed" as you say by them, why did you go out and purchase a wp7 phone? Why dont you just sell it and get your pos and stick with it? No one forced you to, did they?
I'm not stabbed but to be honest, I miss some things like all of us does. If I buy a smartphone, I don't want to be limited on sharing just online. A "smartphone" should have it all integrated, especially because is a microsoft avantgarde. I want to download clips from net and store it to my phone, install apps third party without the need of pc, visiting web pages with javascript enabled, watching movies online, cuz is microdoft phone and it has a great flash player. We cannot always say just"sell it and buy something else" and pretend that we are super satisfy with our devices, but waiting always for future updates for improvings.
there is a development thread for this topic: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1483377
That thread is exclusive for development & tests.
Please post here legitime questions.

[Q] Is it worth installing a custom rom?

Hey guys
So uhh I've been recently thinking about installing custom rom on my titan since I will be getting a Lumia 920 no matter what. My titan is still a virgin lol so its basically untouched, no hspl or dev-unlock. Since the fate of current WP7 devices will stick to the current kernel and not get WP8 officially, might as well reasses my options with this phone. It has served me well for nearly a year now but now WP8 phones have been announced, I think its time to unlock more potential from this phone. So how do you benefit from using a custom rom? I'd really love to get nokia apps, and system homebrew apps which adds more functionality to it, but the risks of losing sms and game progress, is it really worth it?

Wanting an 8X for VZW.

Hello all!
I've always been exclusively Android and never even thought about trying iOS.
But when MS put out WindowsPhone 8 I was extremely curious.
Now I'm about to grab an 8X off of eBay just to try it out!
Some things to know:
I'm on Verizon
I may want to "hack" this thing (I used to flash ROMs and kernels all day with my old Galaxy Nexus)
I have a lot of Google stuff i.e. Play Music, Drive etc..
Things I need to know:
Will this phone get WP 8.1?
Are there problems with the 8.1 Developer Preview once installed? (with the LTE or Beats Audio functionality or anything)
Are there benefits from unlocking these phones like free tethering and whatnot?
Thanks in advance!
Cheers!
I don't know much about this phone. I just got one as well.
But it seems to me that it's the complete opposite of a galaxy nexus : everything is blocked, impossible to flash downgrades, community is therefore not very interested in a phone that HTC didn't intend for "hack"
On the other hand I think it will officially get 8.1. And its a really nice phone I think (I use a nexus 4 as my daily one).
And for Google stuff use a Google phone (no gmail app on wp)
I have one branded and blocked. Kind of discouraging when you've easily flashed thousand of ROMs on other devices..

Hey thanks for replying!
But yeah I assumed most Windows Phones would be locked up. Especially compared to a stock Android phone like a Nexus.
I just thing it would be cool to try out. I don't ever get much facetime with anything WP related.
Would make for an interesting change! I'll keep my Moto X around for sure though.
As someone with the TMO branded device, It is a nice phone. The Developer Preview for 8.1 has known issues with configuring CDMA devices. (it will be fixed in the final release).
As far as Windows Phone goes, it is perfectly hackable, it just comes down to sheer volume....Most people with a Windows Phone have a Lumia, so there are more people working on that. There are a couple of ways to load custom/other firmware for some variants of the 8x. (Most people have been posting in the WP8 General forum)
Also, HTC and Microsoft have both announced that the phone will be getting an official update to Windows Phone 8.1.
Hope that helps!
