Android on my Windows Phone 7? - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just decided to install mango on my windows phone 7, but now i want to know if there is any way to install any android os on it. I used to like it when i got it but i just hate microsoft the have stabbed me in the back so many times with xbox and this phone. I love android cause the app, wp7 just doesnt have any apps or anything.

This will start a flame war undoubtedly like it always does but....
Basically you cannot install Droid on ANY windows phone 7 yet. Period.
As to the apps? What "must have" apps are you missing?

well, wp7 marketplace for one just doesnt have anything, androids has so much more. everything on wp7 cost money. if i could unlock this stupid thing i would be happier. is there anyway to unlock the HTC Trophy from verizon.

Bump... anyone know who to unlock the HTC Trophy from verizon, model (mwp6985) on firmware 7720 mango. I unlocked it before but thats when i had my developer membership which microsoft banned my account for no reason, one of the reasons i want android.

There are tons of free apps on WP7... the way you write this though suggests you are used to piracy.... That being said though to unlock the Trophy you have to downgrade back to a lower version NoDo or lower probably. I am not very familiar with the Verizon phones.

I came from iOS having previously, and to be honest there may be less apps on the WPMarketplace then either store but I have found I don't need hardly any third party apps to make the phone function on par with what I had before.
Bottom line - if you want an Android sell your WP7 and buy one. I sold my iPhone on eBay to get my Omnia 7 and I'm sure you won't have a problem selling the phone.

I believe the Trophy has the same CPU (QSD8250) the HD2 and Nexus one does, that would probably be the best place to start. You may want to double check on the GPU though. That CPU is also very compatible with the QSD8650 (or at least the opposite is true), but I wouldn't worry about that until you get it ready to boot a ROM on. If you have to modify the radio/baseband or bootloader I wouldn't risk mixing them up there.
Have you checked to see if there's any way to trigger download mode on your phone?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snapdragon_%28system_on_chip%29

The count is less, very less agreed on that but let me know what app you are looking for and I will list it for you. Roll in your requests.

I don't understand why people are always talking about there aren't anny apps for wm7.
The normal apps are there, so whats the problem.
Beside that I think WM7 runs better en smoother than android so you going to mango..

What is "WM7?"

It seems this thread was started under the false pretense of a legitimate question, but it has become very apparent, this is another troll situation where nothing productive to add or question to ask, but to start bs. When asked what specific the "must have" apps are they missing, they cannot answer. such typical crap...
If you really felt such hate towards microsoft and you have been "stabbed" as you say by them, why did you go out and purchase a wp7 phone? Why dont you just sell it and get your pos and stick with it? No one forced you to, did they?

I'm not stabbed but to be honest, I miss some things like all of us does. If I buy a smartphone, I don't want to be limited on sharing just online. A "smartphone" should have it all integrated, especially because is a microsoft avantgarde. I want to download clips from net and store it to my phone, install apps third party without the need of pc, visiting web pages with javascript enabled, watching movies online, cuz is microdoft phone and it has a great flash player. We cannot always say just"sell it and buy something else" and pretend that we are super satisfy with our devices, but waiting always for future updates for improvings.

there is a development thread for this topic: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1483377
That thread is exclusive for development & tests.
Please post here legitime questions.

What is the deal with WM7?

I have heard so many bad things about WM7, that I just have to ask someone to confirm this!
The things I have heard are:
1. No copy/paste (Even Iphone has that now!)
2. The apps we have now for WM 6.X cant be used in WM7
3. Most apps for WM7 will be web based (What if you cant afford an unlimited data plan or you are somewhere where you cant get coverage?)
It sounds to me like they have taken all the bad things from the iPhone and implemented into wm7!
Why would anyone want to cripple an OS like that?
Please tell me if I have misunderstood all of this, or if it´s true?
1) i believe it's in the os but from what ive heard it's disabled in the shipping version.
2) the code itself would work, the interfaces however will not. so yes, they won't work.
3) i havent heard that.
you should be more *****ing that the iphone now has multitasking and wp7s doesnt. this is why im still using wm2003/wm5.

Wait, you are telling me that WM7 will not have multitasking either? (I have not heard that, otherwise it would be on the top of my list!)
If all of this is true then it will be more restricted then iPhone! (YAAAY, way to go microsoft!)
Guess I will be switching over to Android very soon, unless microsoft change their mind before WM7 official release!
also it will only work with .net apps faster native apps will not be available
and only place you can get apps will be ms marketplace
Ok then, can someone please explain to me why some people think that WM7 is so great?
To me it feals like we are taking a few steps back instead of forward!
I mean, for a guy like me, that loves technology and wants to be able to do everything with the device, I just feel a little bit frustrated not being able to do so anymore! What is the point in locking everything down like this?
Are the devices we buy even ours anymore, or does microsoft own them?
I am sorry, but I am so angry right now, that I cant think of anything good to say!
"can someone please explain to me why some people think that WM7 is so great?"
who are saying that?
personally every phone I had apart from 1 have been wm phones but my next phone will most likely be an android

Some of my friends thinks that it is going to be the best OS yet!
But I guess that they dont have all the facts, and that they are basing their opinions on what they have seen on the Windows 7 (PC) OS! (Which is in fact very good!)
But just as you said, Android is going to be my next phone too! I just have trouble dealing with the fact, that all my purchased apps & games wont work anymore, and that I have to start buying them all over again! (If I can find equalent stuff!)
maybe when android phone inc in processor speed later on wm6.X emulators will be a reality but not likely soon enough to help you if those apps are stuff you need often / soon

A lot of apps on android are free so at least you wont have to pay much (the most expensive app i've seen was $9.99)
I'll be upgrading to a HD2 in May, so until it dies any future upgrades (unless M$ come to their senses) will be ebayed, might as well make some money if O2 are willing to give me free useless tat.
I couldn't wait for WM7 falling more behind, so I took the plunge to Android in January. Best move too open source & I have not looked back!

Android vs Windows Mobile..which is better/differences, pros and cons?

In your opinion (keep it short please) what is the difference between win mobile and android and pros and cons please?
Thanks
George
Android pros:
Open source
Huge market proliferation (ensuring compatability and development)
Huge app market
Stable faster linux kernel
Winmobile pro:
More compatable with windows
Wifi router (until froyo)

I have 2 Windows phones and 2 Android phones and I can't think of a single thing the Windows phones do better than the Android phones.
Well, when I got my phone at T mobile today (I was tired of att and verizon, long story..) I asked for an android phone and I get home and see it's a windows phone...?
Mind you, I'm not surprised considering they didn't even know what GSM is when I asked if t mobile was gsm.
I LIKE the fact that it acts as a hot spot so what is FROYO?
I also thing I'l like droid better so here's the question, do they make the HD2 for android and is it available for t mobile?
Also, the navigation on the windows hd2 I have seems totally retarded...
Yes, the droid (I had the 8183) was much better.
Does it mean I liked the 8183? Nope and whoever the idiot is that wrote the software that only lets you use a FRACTION of the big a$$ screen to display info, phone numbers, names and such should be shot, SLOWLY!
You guys have NO idea how many countless hours I've spent in frustration, trying to find a way to SEE things on the screen with my $hitty eyesight and all because some moron is too stupid to figure out that MAYBE they should start with making the BASICS work on the phone.
You know, kinda like the iPhone. It was great, EXCEPT at being a friggin' PHONE! Let's see, iPHONE, what part of phone didn't you understand?
Sadly enough, ALL these idiots make more money at what they do than I do
Thanks

Well, I loved MyPhone on Windows Mobile. And I just have my Android for 3 days, but I haven't found something as good and for free yet.
Next to that, I can't think of anything I missed yet. Even eBuddy managed to easily fulfill my needs of MSN/WLM. Even with offline messaging.
There are two things i don't like about android:
First, there isn't only one good videoplayer(ffmpeg is a must have!) EDIT: Rockplayer is a nice start, but the fps is ~100% lower than the ones i get with coreplayer
And i havent found something like Audiobooster.
Try both and take the OS which you prefer
Android Cons:
None
Windows Mobile Cons (based on my experience with 6.1 Buisness):
Too hard to install games and apps
Not enough games and apps
Not user friendly
Too slow response
Android pros:
huge application
Google serious to maintain the android development
Android Cons:
No Wifi proxy support
hard to copy paste beetwen app
Winmobile cons:
too late microsoft your windows mobile is dying. your development team is slow
Old win 6.5 kernel..
windows phone 7 is too late to release...your market app is not working...
all developer moving to another platform
No multitasking support for windows 7...thats shame
Search for rockbase player for videos. Funambol or mybackup pro for closest to myphone off the top of my head.

there's a lot of things to look at but the best way to choose is this.
if you are running an app and it has issues or require a bit of memory, window will lock up and then you have to reset the phone.
with android you'll get a force close notification which you just ok it and keep using it with out having to reset.
Android FTW
Android:
Fast
User friendly
great multitasking
many apps and great games
works better on slow phones
user driven market
WM:
horrible performance, only WM phone with good performance is the hd2
bad multitasking, but happily arkswitch makes it easier
almost no 3d games, marketplace is not worth a ****
OK, As a windows Fanboy turned android here is the main thing Windows does better than android: Multimedia!!
Android is still new to the game and in my opinion hasn't really got a good video and music player. There are some ones that can pass but compared to Windows and iphone they are not that great. On the flip side I plan on developing my own music player which counts for the openness of android. WinMo is arguably just as open BUT with them going a different direction with WM7 I had to jump ship. As for Androids advantages......everything else is just as good if not better than windows (except how they manage the SD card)
Well, the few minutes I've spent with the windows platform already makes me hate it. Whoever did the software for the HD2 is totally retarded. I couldn't even get myself out of whatever app happened to come on last night and I was about ready to throw this big piece of $hit out the window.
I now know what Froyo is and if I'm not mistaken, it'll have a wifi proxy which I guess it to be is that it acts like a hot spot which should put a damper on some of the greedy phone companies (IF it is released on their phones) like ATT who charges you another 30 bucks extra for connecting to your laptop.
That to me is bull**** and greed and IS costing them customers.
Verizon is better with that but I hate their support AND I think their coverage in my area is worse. The support is TOTALLY useless and I left them once because of it and I will AGAIN leave them I think and yes, mainly because of it.
I'll try the t mobile service out for a week or so and if the coverage is good, I'll return this locked piece of $hit and get me one of the unlocked phones from NEgri Electronics. If anyone hasn't heard of them yet (which kinda would surprise me) here they are...
I mean, seriously, in order NOT to pay the full price at t mobile, I have to sign up for two years AND the phone is locked which means I can't use proggies like this one which I NEED! http://www.androlib.com/android.application.org-pbxes-fontsize-BiEA.aspx
For a buck fitty (not fifty, fitty, like fitty cents) I can get this proggy which could fix my problem but I can't do it on a locked phone. Well, they can ki$$ my ass then with all the restrictions. I'll get this one for example http://negrielectronics.com/touch-smartphone-unlocked-tmobile-2747.html , get me a monthly account instead and I can put anything I want on it. Now how the hell can I go wrong with that, AND, they're easier to sell should you want to get rid of them.
Put some of this stuff on it and some silicone case on it and you can sell it years later looking brand new which is what I did with my iPhone.
I'm going to wait for a week or so and decide if I like tmobile and if I do, I'll tell verizon where they can stick their phone.
Would you believe I had to make THREE attempts to get them to port my att number over and meanwhile, I'm paying ATT for the account. I even called and talked to VERIZON people to make sure it got done right and in BOTH cases, they screwed it up. I finally got it done the right IN The store, a WEEK after!
After all this crap AND a busted phone that was only two weeks old, I tried to get a free charging cable from one of the store manager, NOT a charger or the ac adapter thingie, just the stinkin' cable and he wouldn't even give me that. Now that is tacky and petty. Oh, the reason I wanted another cable was so I could keep one in the car cause that piece of $hit pre wouldn't hold a charge over 5-6 hours and let's not talk about TALKING time. This was a LITTLE talking and lots of stand by.
What a damn joke.
I like the pre platform and concept in general and I have several PDA's that are PALM but the PRE phone, they kinda dropped the ball on a little.
No on screen keyboard (now how hard is that to figure out), the actual keyboard should have been horizontal for size and the damn thing is a gas guzzler, AND, I don't see an option to keep the damn notifications from coming up and crowding your screen when you turn it on. Also, it's slow as $hit from when you click that you want the keypad till it finally opens up.
NO Predictive dialing and you can't get the beautiful HUGE clock to stay on top that I know of. Again, how hard is that to figure out? Does this take so long to program into the software? I mean, they almost went belly up. You'd think they had the TIME and STAFF to do things right. Sheesh!
Anyway, enough bitc*in'

That's not how business works. Any phone advertised on TV (like the Pre) is designed for general consumers (people who don't care about the things you're talking about). It would be a terrible business decision to spend more time and money incorporating things that 99% of their target market don't care about or don't even know they're missing. If you're posting on XDA you're probably a lot more tech savvy than the average consumer, thus phones marketed towards the average consumer won't have 100% of the features you request. I always like to buy phones that are rarer and not advertised, mainly because I like having stuff that other people don't have, but also because they usually end up being a cut above the rest of the phones on the market.
Thread moved to General.
If I were you guiri_too, and can afford it, I'd order the Nexus One unlocked and as soon as it arrives, root the thing, put Froyo on it (if I could find it) and take that winblows phone back to T-Mobile. I can't believe they gave you that after asking for an Android phone. That has to be one of the dumbest salesmen ever! Or if you want to stay with T-Mobile and happen to like Sense (Espresso Sense), pick up the the MyTouch Slide. It has a keyboard, MS Exchange support and is pretty snappy to boot (speaking of boot, it only takes about a minute from hitting the power button to making a call). If you need a more business-like phone, I would suggest the Sprint Evo 4G. It's the same size as the HD2, 4.3", but it's Android. The UI looks like the HD2 as well (Sense), but it's a lot quicker and more stable. A friend of mine picked this up after having the Sprint Hero, which he got after the TouchPro (winmo) and couldn't be happier.
As far as the original question, I can only give you an anecdote; when I got my G1, my wife had a Wing which she hated. After a few months of watching me play with my phone all the time, and her Wing being replaced twice, she bought hers and was instantly hooked. We have been android fans ever since. So the advantages of Android for me are awesome stability, openness and apps, of which you don't have to use the market for (unless you get an ATT android).
Let me try to address the replies in one window.
First as for being tech savvy, yeah, I guess I am and I've been around long enough to be picky, HOWEVER, my BASIC needs are a phone I can HEAR and SEE. How come Nextel have speakers that you can hear clear across the next state and this thing I got, the HD2 I can barely hear with the fans in the car running despite them telling me it was really loud...?
Sure, I want a lot of stuff but if you read through all my info, you'll see that some of the things i don't really care about like social networking, streaming video, mp3 player and much more. LARGE FONT! How the hell hard is that to figure out? I mean, for those here who program and considering it's even in very simple programs. IS IT THAT hard to have an option of making the font bigger?
To Heybob. Bob, the problem is that I can't try and see these phones live so to speak. ALL the phones at tmobile are dummies or at least the ones I'm interested in.
Second, to be quite honest and when I think about it, I am not sure if she did mention this one was windows but I DID tell her I prefered android. In any case, NOT knowing what GSM is or if tmobile was GSM is not something I can let slide, ESPECIALLY considering she was the manager...
Now, so far, my tmobile coverage has seemed good. Yes, the phone as in the UI is still totally retarded so the windows OS has got to go. More than likely when I return this, if I still like tmobile then, I'll get a phone from Negri that's unlocked and if I'm not mistaken, he HAS Froyo phones in stock. Hold, gonna call and check..yep, he's got Nexus One with Froyo ready to ship.
Tell'em George with the long wish list sent ya if you buy one. Not that I think I'll get any referrals but hey, it never hurts when it comes time to bug them about finding me the right phone.
Anyway, back to the phones. I do NOT like this windows UI so that one is out. I like that I have found a site with something like 80,000+ apps all in one place and although I'm not stingy, when you're TRYING apps and don't know if you'll like them or not, it helps if they're cheap or free. I got something on hte Pre I didn't like but hell ,I wasn't about to ask for a $1.50 refund.
Many of the windows apps were $15 or around there. I'm not paying it if I can't get a refund if I don't like the software and I AM picky with software too.
By the way, is there someone here that has a rooted android phone that wouldn't mind putting this font proggy on there (hell, I'll be happy to pay for it at only 2 bucks or something) and show me the different font size options? http://www.androlib.com/android.application.org-pbxes-fontsize-BiEA.aspx
I WAS going to do that but as you know, I didn't get a droid phone
I showed this dude on the androlib forum this proggy. He gets it, his wife likes it (he got it for her) and now he's too busy to show me some screen captures. Thanks a lot
George
I've owned 4 different winmo phones and I can say that android leaves those respond FOOLS in the dust.
Android is more compatible with exchange server than windows mobile solution or blackberry.
Work gets done faster and I smile a lot more now.

Coming right up...

Everything is Android these days

Android has pretty much taken over the XDA-Portal
Everyday there are more and more posts about users who switched over from winmo to android.
I am planing on buying WP7 device, but my fear is I'll be one of few to do so, and as a result of this there will be little development going on for the device. I am a pretty die-hard windows fan so I hope they regain some popularity with WP7.
What does everyone think?
One thing will decide, microsoft wp7 ads.
sent from my x10i that is banging for a 2.1 upgrade. ...
WM continues
I wouldn´t worry for that, despite Android is now "in fashion" as soon as WP7 arrives will happen the same
I am also looking forward WP7 I´m sure it will be a funny one too

WM is great because of the amount of free software available for it and the openness of the OS. Yes many times the carriers do a lousy job of programming their version of the phone software but thats where the custom roms come in. Remeber iOS and Android are babies in the world of phone software. So most of the worst specs for an android phone are really good for WM. That being said take about any WM phone and hack it with a good stable custom rom and you will be amazed. I've seen many of hte new android phones and I can say I 'm not that impressed. I think its a great phone for people who aren't phone smart. Thats not saying you can't root it and do really cool things with it. But out of the box its pretty locked down. Unfortunately WP7 is going the way of android and iOS because of their success putting smart phones in normal non techies hands. But for the true techie WM is where its at. Hoped that helped. I fear owning my HD2 for years because all the new phones will be locked down like iphone.
hopefully this eases your concerns about lockdown
one of my great friends recevied their developers wp7 device just the other day and theyve already hacked deep into it, done a plethora of customizations and so on. with wp7 i think we will see more apps and such since they say it has lots of appeal to developers. weve got xda, so we hopefully will never have to face a locked down windows phone haha
i agree, if you are very phone smart, and want to get your phone the exact way you like it windows is where its at. they get a bad rep in the smartphone world only because there is a pretty big learning curve before you can truly dig into the device.

I've been seeing alot about this on other sites. Devs seem to want the os cause it's market is not filled to the brims so thier apps get lost. First ones out the gate wins kinda thing. I'm eager to see what happens, though I plan on replacing my two raph's with a captivate. I'm really not digging the multitasking in wp7.
The rumored specs for the HD3 has me very interested in WP7. 4.5" 1280x800 screen, 1.5ghz dual core, 1gb ram, 32gb mem. Depends on the Apps too. I really like the Android market more so than what WinMo has offered. I'm a diehard WinMo user, but after running Android on my HD2.... I've found myself using WinMo less and less and less.
edit: Does WP7 even allow 1280x800 screen res? hmm.
If you use Outlook (I do for both business and personal), the sync between PC and device using ActiveSync/WMDC is (although far from perfect) essential. Doing sync between Android devices and Outlook appears to require either 3rd party apps of variable reliability/ease and/or use of Google mail and calendar. If you're paranoid about your data (like me) and don 't want to use someone else to store it, that make WinMo about the only option. So I think the corporates will keep WinMo alive and XDA-dev will keep it interesting!

its important for everyone to know these 3 thing:
-WP7 will be sending ota updates to the phone directely from microsoft. these updates will improve performance in some cases, and add features in other cases. microsofts goal is to bypass the carrier and avoid all of the bs that comes with carriers.
- keeping this in mind, microsoft has two major updates scheduled ALREADY for release within the the first few months of the phones release. one update is the addition of copy and paste, the other is suppose to have something to do with multi tasking
-they intentionally left copy and paste out of launch so they could distribute it in an ota update.
the multitasking issue isnt a bad thing actually. you can run as many native apps as you want at the same time, you just cant run multiple third party apps at the same time. HOWEVER, lets say i am running a third party app (app1) then lets say i launch a second third party app (app2) app1's state will be saved and placed in the background on "pause" if you will, while app2 runs. if i relaunch app1 its last known state will be restored and app2 will go into pause.

Android on the Arrive/7 Pro

Searched, and haven't found a thread on this.
I'm due for an upgrade in July on my Sprint line, and I was almost certain I was going to go with the EVO 3D (when it comes out), but then I saw the HTC Arrive and kinda liked it. The thing is, though, that I really like Android as well. I know dual-booting Android was possible on the Touch Pro 2, so I was wondering if it's possible to do the same thing with the Arrive/7 Pro, or if having Windows Phone 7 prevents it from being able to do this. Thanks!
It cannot be done as of now.

The HTC 7 Pro has the same SoC as HD7 and HD2, and both of them already have Android.
Why Android still can't be ported for 7 Pro?
I'm pretty sure that hardspl must be available before we can flash custom roms on our pros. More imporantly some sort of application like haret for WM6 but for WP7 would probably also need to be developed first. Hopefully some fine day it will all be possible like on the HD2.
i was looking at how they dual boot with hd2, and it looks like they boot from sdcard, and flash wp7. we shouldn't need to flash wp7, but booting android is sdcard boot. so i see no reason why we can't boot from sdcard, unless we need a special boot loader, and the boot loader they need doesn't have the access to wp7 to get the boot loader working properly and that goes beyond me please correct me if I'm wrong.
why would anyone want to put an unsecure, laggy, fragmented, built from stolen code OS like Android on a fine device such as the arrive? wp7 is leaps and bounds superior to Android and once mango arrives it will be even better. thus the need to do this isn't necessary.

and also many articles that say the opposite. Dont just spew out stuff and say it as fact. Other people have different preferences.
iOS is just as fragmented as Android. Only thing is that Apple controls the fragmentation so dumbass developers dont try making completely universal apps when they dont know how the hell to do that.
And fragmentation isnt an issue for consumers. Its perfectly fine. So i dont understand your bias against it unless you are a developer.

its not fragmentation thats an issue for consumers its malware, there have been numerous reports about this already, im not an iFan either
I really don't care whether you or anyone says android is worse or better than wp7 but it would be nice to switch if one wants to. so when there is a thread discussing the possibility to port android on the 7 pro, there is no need for no-sayers, since they can occupy their brains with other stuff.
i would love to see this, but especially since there is only 1 sd-card, its either flashing one or the other i think...
Not possible on wp7 YET

Hello all,
I am new to mobile phones and I would like to post some questions, which are general in fact, but closely related to the topic and the Arrive device.
I would like to have another OS on it and I have found a way to change the SD cart it is running with, so I should be able to change or modify it with no trouble.
I imagine that I could find another HTC device with identical hardware and deploy it's ROM to this one in a manner similar to HD2's approach. I am so new that I already can feel how dumn is that ... but still.
I need to clarify some basics in order to know what to look for. First of all what does the firmware does and how it is related to the OS. Can I imagine it is something like BIOS, which controls the main hardware like processor, ram, telephony, etc? If so what stops me of formatting the SD and booting another system from it on the same hardware.
Another thing is what the ROM contains and how it is related to the OS. I am with the impression that it has everything in it -- OS distributive, firmware backup and bootloader maybe. If that is correct am I free to cook a ROM that contains the same firmware (as I imagine it like a BIOS alternative), the bootloader of another system and its distributive? Of course the ROM that is already on the device may and most probably will try to stop me, so I will need to somehow format it.
I do not express myself too good due to lack of expertise, but I know computers and I believe you will know what to tell me to straighten my thoughts.
Thank you in advance for any information you provide.
Sincere,
drel
At this stage, pesonally, I think wp7 is the best os to me. At it is not laggy as android does and looks more beautiful than iOS...

I think what you meant to say was "Why would anyone have a different opinion than my awesome opinion?" As much as I love WP7 I'd love to be able to use Android with this chassis. Choice is always good. There is no Android phone with this keyboard.

Bump. Having no Bluetooth SPP has just pissed me off for a year. About to get an Galaxy Nexus S come May, so I don't mind tinkering with my Arrive for now.
hello?
Any news about dual booting android on arrive / HD7 Pro? I read the thread and some users just talk crap. " Why this? Why that?" Why not, may I ask. I Love WP7, i really think that beats the crap out of everything else. But why can't we dream of having android too? As far as I know, Android has at the moment much more apps ( free and payed ones ) available than WP7. My brother-in-law has veetle ( just an example ) on his Xperia S, and he can watch live football/soccer which I can't cuz there is no veetle available. And who can name veetle, can name many others too. The point is: Combining the best of two worlds would makes fully profit from our beloved phones, which we payed ( at least I did ). I really hope that some news about this stuff.
Best Regards
Miiky

Until 12AM tonight to decide PLEASE ADVISE

I have until 12AM tonight to decide if I accept a 7 Pro / HTC Arrive for £120.
The offer is tempting however having researched WM7 I just don't know if I should wait and get a cheap TP2 with 6.5 instead.
It seems everything I loved about WM6.5 is gone in WM7 which appears to be more like an iOS interface and locked out of many apps. I know there is some improvement in Mango but this just seems to be more of an enhancement over the original canvas.
Currently using a TP1 but the keys have worn out.
Any contributions would be appreciated.

What do you use your phone for? What would you want to use your phone for?
How much does the apps matter to you? What apps do you 'need'?
Are you into Music subscriptions? Are you into Xbox games?
I don't use an Xbox and am not interested in music subscriptions.
I don't tend to use it for internet much either, mainly calls and texts but I have alot of rare apps relating to hobbies like tone signal generators and other stuff, it seems all of these would be gone.
Is it true that the phone can still not be accessed as a drive and has to go through web software still as this really puts me off the device.

I think in that case 6.5 is mostly a better choice. However the Gen1 phones have gone to a stage full unlock where you could use the root tools to edit registry, custom ROMs, use file explorers, advanced config tool etc - that lets you use your phone to side load apps, more or less as an usb drive too. However, I am not very sure if all your apps can come with you. The kernel is different and I am pretty sure there will be limitations to it.
I am guessing there is no way a stock WM 6.5 install would work on this phone?
It seems a dreadful shame that such a great piece of hardware is essentially going to waste from locked software since the specs of this phone are very nice.
Thanks

i personally have an htc 7 pro which is the arrive. and i can say after 10/11 month of use, its a really good phone. i have all the apps that i need, and WP7 is just the future, and dont look back on wm6.5. or do you still run you PC on a win95??? just look in the future, there are coming all the apps that you need for wp7 in the future, but the new ones arent coming to wm6.5.
and the future for wp7 holds a new system, which is about to come later this year. i mea nthe wp8. and all thing tend that its an update that all users of wp7 get. sooner or later

Not at the moment. The system is pretty much locked down and secured. Even if someone is able to have custom ROMs on most WP7.5 phones, I think they might prefer making custom WP7.5 ROMs. It might be hard to find a ROM chef willing to port a WM6.5 to WP7.5 hardware!

Ok thanks that pretty much settles it then, i just wish it was possible to upgrade the TP2 hardware there seems to be no equivalent other than the expensive Droid phones

Could you not keep your old phone as your toy for hobbies and get a new WP7 phone? You never know you might like it! Plus in a few months or even a year while you continue your hobbies on the old phone, someone might be able to think of having 6.5 on WP7 (to me I will still be surprised if anyone wants to go back!)?
I am saying this with a huge stone on my heart and bitting a few too many bullets but ---
IF you think one of the droid boys can let you use your old hobby apps on those phones, get a droid.
I have the 7 Pro and I have to say it really is a great phone. I wouldnt go back to TP2 or similar anymore.
