Is there going to be any xda support on this? It's still trickling into Kmart stores right now. but if we are able to OC this, that would be great
Doubt it...
its a great little device for little cash. i bought one today after i heard. glad i did. was this or the bb chumby. this blows it away
Hey Pen --
Have you tried the Kindle app on it? I want an ereader that is bigger than my MT3G and I think one of these would foot the bill if I can find one. My local store only had one and it was on hold for somebody.
I am going to get a rain check today.
until they release the patch which allows the market to work i havent tried it. they should have the patch released by tomorrow
How is the screen?
How do you like the screen and how is its performance in general.
over all i like the device. im used to a resistive screen so thats not a problem. doesnt appear to have the auto rotate screen but waiting to hear back from them to find out what the deal is. the manual talks about auto rotating the screen so it should have it. lack of bluetooth is another draw back but i really dont need it. they also have a 2.5mm headphone jack on them instead of a 3.5 like normal but they are addressing that with an adapter i do believe.
power consumption wasnt too bad. i was using the device for 5 hours yesterday and only used a 1/4 reserve from what it said. so i was only down to around 72% charge after playing with it for 5 hours. was reasonably bright enough in a brightly lit room. the angle one can see is pretty good as well.
the microsd card slot isnt in line properly. so if you insert a card you will want to put a price of tape on the end of it so when you release it you can pull it out. i played hell getting the thing to pull out and it was dragging the top of the card so had to use a pair of tweezers to pull it out.
cant access the market yet so havent tried the nook or kindle apps but that will be my next thing. looking at pictures was good. just as good as my digi pic frame.
over all for what i bought it for i do believe it will work a treat. i was going to buy a chumby either the bb or the sony branded chumby and this will work so much better then either of those two devices.
Augen Tablet
Thanks for the info pen.
It surprises me that that it has a 2.5mm jack. I wonder how it ended up with that. You can get an adapter on Amazon or ebay for a buck or two. That would be important for me because I'd like to be able to watch movies on it when I am on the train to work. That is also why I am interested in the Kindle app.
Everything that I have read seems to indicate that it has an accelerometer to rotate the screen.
I get the feeling that Augen underestimated the interest this device was going to generate and put it on the market when it wasn't completely ready, thinking they could dabble a little and fix problems on the fly with the couple of people that bought them. oops.
My Augen Gentouch78 experience
I just picked up my Augen yesterday at the KMart here in Phoenix (KMart actually called me on my raincheck I had made over the phone! Kudos to them). I like the form factor but am quite disappointed overall. While I don't think it is sluggish in general, the resistive touch screen makes it seem that way. Using your fingernail or an old pda stylus helps considerably in that regard.
Couple of negatives:
1. Market download does not work, as others have pointed out (it just stays in the "Starting Download" phase.
2. Micro SD card is hard to insert/remove (you need to use your fingernail in both cases, and to remove you need to also flick it down a bit to slide out as it seems to catch on the lip of the slot).
3. The device could not "Mount" when connected to my PC via USB. I had better luck when the SD card was not in the device, as I was able to Mount it once then, and saw that I had 1.3GB of free space... even though the device SD card info showed only 246ishMB free... what's up with that? (documentation did say there was 2GB available, so the Mounted drive size was closer).
4. I lost sound twice.. had to power off to get it back (all sounds started coming out as loud white noise). Seems to occur when pressing the top front part of the frame... yup, near where the menu/home/back buttons are.
5. Percentage battery use shows that monitoring cellular network was using 57% of the battery, and suggested turning it off. However, you can't... network settings only have WiFi (I curiously did find a place where it prompted me to turn on Bluetooth, but I don't think it did anything).
6. I wanted to return the unit due to the sound problem, but wanted to clear out my google account info... the factory reset does nothing other than power off the unit, even though that is how they say to clear out all data including the google account data.
7. No auto-rotate. No rotate at all that I can see. Nothing in the setup relating to that, even though the manual says it should be there.
8. Non-US Standard earphone jack
9. No mic or web cam
10. Resistive touch screen makes typing on the on-screen keyboard a PITA. I did get somewhat use to it after a while, but still don't like having to press firmly.
On the positive side:
After manually copying a ripped DVD movie in mp4 format onto my SD card and inserting it into the unit, it played great.
So, first impressions are basically way down there for me.
Some other specs:
- Telechips TCC8900 ARM CPU (on an eval board no-less!)
- Android 2.1 - Update 1
- Build 2010-07-21 (boy did they push these out the door... likely with no testing!!)

they are pushing an update out should be out tonight or tomorrow to fix a couple of the things. i believe the eval board is not correct as someone has found the chinese version of this and it has been out for a while. i just think the cooking of this device wasnt the best. i am just hoping they push 2.2 out on it pretty quickly.
I also got one today
I can confirm the market is not working for me either.. Yes build date is really new. haha.. I'm trying to get apps installed by emailing myself APK's to Gmail but I need something like APKatcher to do it. So so far I've not installed anything, but going into settings, aplications and manage I was able to kill the running apps and speed it up.
So far it's a cool little device. I also lost sound once and a reboot fixed it. haha (interesting) I watched 20 minutes of avatar and it looks incredible and gets much louder than a cell phone.. My 16GB MicroSD card went in fine.
There's a Stylus if you guys didn't figure that out yet. Makes typing extremely easy.
Anyone know how I can install some APK's?
ES File Manager comes Pre Loaded.. you can add any app APK to the SD card. and use ES File Manager to install
Installing Quadrant, and some games right now.. I'll post back
Rainchecks
I got two rain checks tonight. I want to get one for myself and I know my wife will want one if it is cool.
If anybody really wants one and lives in Eastern PA, they have 4 of them in the Reading PA store. That is a little far for me to drive and I like getting a rain check because I can make sure they are going to put out an update to make the market work.
It seems like the early reviews are mixed at best but c'mon...they are $150. I mean, if I can get my 6 year old to watch a thomas the tank engine video on it for a few minutes of peace each day, I have gotten my money's worth.
Dev thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7409528#post7409528
Well I got one yesterday and it is horrible.
I am hoping their support can help me get the screen a bit more responsive.
I mean I have to press on it like I'm trying to push through it.
The manual says there supposed to be a calibrations but there isn't.
The manual says there is an option to allow this to orientate according tot he direction held but theres not.
The manual says that when you charge the device the light should be red in color turning green when fully charged well I charged over night and its still red.
When I turn it on it says 100% battery...
Also I went into market which is like that on my Droid1, Incredible, Droidx... and chose to install a app like dropbox, weatherbug, MyMemo, SlingPlayer and it sis there saying downloading but its not.
I have my wifi connected to the device...
Anyone else with ideas???
I so wanted this to be a iPad alternative!!!
Thanks
I got one last night... I side loaded a bunch of apps from my Incredible... LauncherPro, Pandora, Quick Settings, Android System Info... Awesome Drop...they all work... The weird thing is some of the apps force the screen to Portrait, but i haven't found an app yet to turn it back.. (aside from rebooting)
I noticed the sound is wonky... sometimes it works...
I also noticed something installed called Dev Tools... It has a terminal, a bunch of dev settings, a package browser, sync tester, and some google tools..
I got one today as well. So far, all is not well.
Wifi seems to be an issue. I can connect to my network if I turn off security, but when I enable WEP, this thing just sits here and says 'Obtaining IP Address' and then shows 'Unsuccessful'. I have tons of other devices connected. The problem is not the network.
So, with security off, I played with it a bit. The browser seems to work fine. It defaults to mobile pages and I'd love to turn that off. No Flash as expected.
I also have a problem with sound. When anything produces sound (mp3, video, youtube, even clicking on something) all I get is horrible white noise.
I get constant alerts that things have failed to download. I assume that this is due to the Marketplace issue.
I threw in a micro SD that I had. I have no problems with it sticking as others have reported.
I will admit that this is my first taste of Android. I am a professional developer for other platforms though so I'm not a total knucklehead - just partial.
I hear that an update is imminent. Anyone have any info about this? Will it be done via the SD card? USB?
I REALLY want this to work
Greg
Update:
Looks like a reboot fixed a few things now. I am now connected to my secured network and sound is ok. So now I have a more or less functioning tablet.
You guys aren't having screen issues?
This is posted on the Augen website:
Patch for GENTOUCH78 Tablet (available 1700EST)
Dear Augen Customers (GEN Nation),
Thank you for showing your support and interest in our GENTOUCH78 Tablet. We became aware of the technical difficulties over the past 24 hours, and we will be posting an update for a patch to the software at the following link: http://augen.helpserve.com/ under latest download files within the next 48 hours.
Just to mention a few technical difficulties we have found and are patching are:
the memory size of 284mb not being shown as 2GB will be corrected as this is a glitch in the software.
Android Market place not being able to download apps will be fixed in this patch, as this is a glitch in the software. As of right now the operating system and pre-loaded applications are using .5 Gb so the available space displayed should be approximately 1.5GB.
To solve the issue with the headphone jack being too small for a 3.5 mm headphone connection, we ask you to send us an email to [email protected] with your Name, Adress, eMail Adress along with a proof of purchase. We will be sending you at our expense the 2.5 mm headphones to go along with the unit within 15-20 days. All future products that will be manufactured will have the new patch and a 2.5mm earbud to go along with the unit.
We want to make it a great experience for our customers. We apologize for disappointing some of you, and we are doing our best to make it a great experience at Augen.
Thank you for your support,
Daniel Gofman

the screen sucks
Ok, now I'm going into my third day with this phone, and I'm really struggling to find a way that it has made me happy. I mean, yeah, I like the OS and all, but Sprint still hasn't gotten back to me on whether they're going to send me a free Airave (I spend half the time in my home roaming). I had to reset the device yesterday to get it to connect to Marketplace - even though my account has never said anything but US (last time I left the country was in the Navy 21 years ago) - and even though I could connect to marketplace on Zune software, my phone wouldn't connect to it. Now I've got that working, by resetting the phone.
Now I can't get the phone unlocked. My developer account has been approved, identity verified, and the next step in my process is unlock my phone. I have tried all the tricks I've found so far: start phone, unlock the lock screen, turned off a bunch of services on my PC (like SQL, IIS, and more), reset my phone again, touch marketplace on the phone while connected so it says "connected" on the screen... Between all this and the lousy reception I get at home, I'm ready to just chuck this thing back at Sprint and say, "Thanks, but no thanks." The one thing keeping me from doing that is that Verizon is going to get the Trophy, and I want a phone with a keyboard. I've had keyboards on all my WinMo phones, and don't plan to stop now. I just wish this phone was available on VZW. I'm going to stick it out as long as I can, but iff I don't have an improved experience by day 28, Sprint gets it back... </rant>
Ok... Have I missed any other steps in getting this phone to connect to the Developer Phone Registration tool?
Have you tried following the directions here:
http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Fo...s/thread/bfa70370-4926-4086-ad0e-febe716b8bf0
Yes, many times.... I never get past step 4.
Someone just told me an another thread that you have to be verfied through GeoTrust and to do that you must first create and submit an app that you have developed.
After you submit the app, supposedly GeoTrust will contact you via email and have you verify some personal information.
Make a fake app. That's all you have to do. Make one, then submit it. This will generate a claim number with GeoTrust. Trust me, I had to do this myself...
Have you got your certificate from msdn yet it takes a couple of days, once you get your certificate your account will be unloced

I just finished this. Hopefully by monday all will be well
My account has already cleared GeoTrust, and the next step is to unlock my phone. I'm not a student, but it wouldn't matter - I can't get that far. The reg tool doesn't even detect my phone.
If you're getting the dreaded "Check that the Zune software is running blah blah blah" message, this one is a PITA to deal with. From what I've seen poking around on the interwebs, it's hitting a good number of people. It happened to me too.
I have 2 systems that are identical hardware wise, and running 64 bit OSes.
I have 1 machine running a 32 bit OS (it's a much older system).
I was finally able to unlock the phone without any issues at all on the 32 bit system (after swapping out my phone and nearly a week of struggling with it) the very first time I tried.
I'm loving the phone, especially with it being unlocked, but it was a fight until I tried it on that last machine.
Poke Microsoft about it. The more they hear about it and the more information they get about it the faster they'll be able to fix it (that assumes the problem is even on their end).
I've heard using a USB hub (or if you're already using one then NOT using it) has helped some people. *shrug*
Thanks for all the suggestions - I appreciate them. I have yet to get my phone to get past the check zune... blah blah blah error, with the exception of one time. Here's what I did...
I reset my phone, got past the intro, added my live account, hooked it to the computer, let it sync with Zune (I had deleted the phone's proflie), opened the reg tool, and it found the phone. I entered my login info, and got the dreaded 0x64 error having to do with time on the phone.
Several posts I found had to do with people getting past this by using a different internet connection and finding success. Well, I have a rather odd internet connection going on. I live right behind my church, just beyond wireless range from the pastor's router. So here's what I have:
Scientific Atlanta DSL modem/router combo - pastor's connection
Buffalo high powered router running DD-WRT sitting on the platform (closest part of the building to my house), repeating the pastor's signal.
Buffalo high powered router running DD-WRT sitting in my computer room, repeating wireless to my house, and serving as wired router to the server and the HTPC.
Pastor's is 192.168.1.1, the one on the platform is 192.168.2.1, and the one in my house is 192.168.3.1, so they are all separate networks, each using the one upstream of it as a gateway.
So, given my success connecting to the phone, I walked over to church, phone still connected to the computer, connected to the pastor's router, and by this point in time, I can no longer connect to the phone.
I suspect that there is some update that Sprint is pushing that causes this problem, so I repeated the process several times, each time deleting the Zune profile, resetting the phone, going through enough of the startup to get to the settings, and putting it in airplane mode, then connecting in the specified order, allowing the new profile to be created, and still failing to connect to the phone from the reg tool.
Over on the App Hub forums, there are several of us with this problem, and a Microsoft team member said that they believe that it is something specific about the Sprint Arrive, and they are looking into it.
My main gripe about this whole thing is that since Sprint is a latecomer to the game, all the posts I'm finding about this are like six months old. Many people have overcome this problem, so you'd think that Microsoft would have figured out the problem by now, and fixed it.
I hope to get this figured out soon, as I am presently unemployed, and spent my $99 to join the App Hub, hoping to make a bit of money there until I get a job. I'm working on something, but until my phone is unlocked, I can't put my confidence in testing solely with the emulator.
Thanks for the tips guys. I do appreciate it.
I've heard really good things about the HTC arrive, I hope it works out for you. Who knows, it could be something NoDo related (because to the best of my knowledge those phones come with NoDo stocked on). I kinda hope it is, it would take the sting out of the fact that so many of us can't our hands on that update! haha ;-)
Yes, it does come with NoDo. It's interesting, takes a bit of getting used to, but it seems to work well. I love the phone. It feels more solid than my TP2. The only thing is that I wish the screen tilt wasn't spring-loaded. I got used to not using it most of the time on my TP2, so it's taking some getting used to on here.
Oh, frustration of all frustrations! I just grabbed my wife's phone and tried it for kicks. It took me all of 15 seconds to unlock her Sprint Arrive. So I know the problem isn't my computer. WHY WON'T MY PHONE WORK?????
(oh, and if it makes any difference, she's installed WAY more apps than I have)
did you try going to msdn?
My MSDN subscription has expired, but I have posted on App Hub forums. MS thinks it is something specific to the Sprint Arrive, but who knows?
If anyone else has had this problem, there is an official workaround posted on AppHub, but for those who don't have access to that forum, here's the copy/paste:
Re: Cannot register developer phone (HTC Arrive)
Reply Quote
Hi Folks,
There is now an understood issue with respect to the HTC Arrive that may be the cause of your problem. It can affect both developer unlock as well as the ability to update the phone. A KB article is in the works but here is the gist of it for developers having trouble unlocking the phone:
Windows Phone 7 Developer Unlock Tool cannot detect the HTC Arrive Phone
Abstract:
This article applies to developers of Windows Phone 7 applications who are testing their application using the Sprint HTC Arrive, model number PC93100, OS build 7389 or 7390. Developers may find that they are unable to unlock the Sprint HTC Arrive phone using the Windows Phone Developer Unlock Tool, for the purpose of deploying their applications to the phone for testing. This article offers a remedy.
Symptoms
The developer completes these steps to register the phone:
1. Registers through the App Hub as per the steps described in the App Hub registration walkthrough here.
2. Downloads and successfully install the latest version of the Windows Phone Developer Tools.
3. Owns an activated Sprint Arrive in which they personalize their settings (including date and time, and selecting a language).
4. Registers the Sprint Arrive with the same Live account they used in the app hub registration.
Next, the developer follows these steps for Developer specific registration:
5. Connects the Sprint Arrive to the developer's PC with the USB cable included with their device.
6. Ensures that the Zune software is running/open.
7. Launches the Windows Phone Developer Registration Tool.
8. The registration tool ultimately fails to detect the phone upon launch, reporting the following message:
"Unable to connect to phone. Please check that the Zune software is running and that the Zune's sync partnership with your phone has been established."
Cause
This occurs due to a specific state setting in the HTC Arrive that results in the phone not being able to make a desktop passthrough connection. This state condition can be mitigated by following the steps below.
Resolution
Use the following workaround.
1. If connected, unplug the phone device from the computer.
On the phone device:
2. Press the Windows button.
3. Press the right arrow button (on the top right of the screen) or swipe from right to left to expose the application list
4. Scroll to and select “Settings”.
5. Scroll to and select “Cellular”.
6. Select “Change Network Profile” and wait for this operation to complete (<-- this is a key step; you don't need to actually change it).
7. Press the Back or Windows key to exit the “Settings” menu.
After completing the above steps, follow through with the registration process:
8. Connect the Sprint Arrive to the development PC with the USB cable included with the phone device.
9. Launch the Windows Phone Developer Registration Tool (Zune software must be running).
10. The window titled "Windows Phone Developer Registration" appears which establishes a connection to the phone device and the following status message: "Status: Phone ready. Please enter your Windows Live ID and password and click Register to begin".
11. Enter the App Hub registered Windows Live ID and password, and then press the "Register" button.
12. The following status message appears in the window:
Status: Your phone has successfully been registered.

Thank you hopmedic that fixed it for me
this was driving me nuts and the info here solved it thanks
Thanks it worked.
Done the workaround, but nothing for me, still have the 0x64 error.
My phone was relocked after one year of AppHub. But now I can't unlock it again..
Also tried to deelete the phone in the device list on my account and use a proxy VPN network. I'm ttired of this. :/
I'm suprised how little I've been able to find on fast charging the Touch Pro?
There is a mod where the battery.dll (or battdrvr.dll?) file can be replaced to trick the phone into thinking it is charging from the wall charger rather than the USB socket which can increase the current by nearly 3 times based on my testing, despite the usb limit!
The mod I'm referring to is the nuebattery one which is only available for CDMA versions and not as a CAB.
Could anyone shed any light on this, from what I've read the dll file limits the current in USB mode and all it takes is a change of a few bits to unlock the full 900mA limit, currently I get about 160mA via USB but when I shorted the data lines mimicing the AC charger I got 370mA charging current.
Thanks
If I need to fast-charge for whatever reason, I just shut the device down. I think it charges quickly via usb or a wall-charger when it's shut down, but I can't honestly say if that's the case.
What do you mean by "not as a cab"? Have you checked the SITE lately? Keeping in mind, I have yet to attempt to install the cabbed version but if that is all you were really looking for, it might prove beneficial to try installing it first. I've considered it once or twice but never made it to the actual implementation phase yet...
Though the more I think about it, the more I am tempted to install it on my testing device (raph100-GSM version)...
The only cabs's are nuePowerCPL which seems to imply it would only work with the older HTC Touch and Mogul, (I don't think this includes the usb mod anyway), and nueBattery for CDMA Touch pro 2 /Diamond which I would try if my device wasn't GSM. If you do try attepting to install it though please let me know the results.
I've tried usb charging with it turned off but I don't think it charges much faster also I'm trying to get a fast charge going as I have it in a USB dock sync'd.
I'd imagine someone somewhere will have ported it over to Touch pro GSM but I've searched for a good few hours online and haven't been able to find anything suggesting this.
So am I understanding this correctly; the file called "nuePowerCPL-152-v1.52-cab" found on the site does NOT work/is NOT compatible with our devices? Reason I ask is because I'm about to install it on my TP/RAPH100...
Additionally, I also see a battery driver available for the TP2/Diamond2, specifically for the GSM versions. I wonder what the difference is here...
Anyone would know where to put said .dll/battery.dll?
Weird, it (the program, which installs a shortcut to "start - settings - system") seems to actually "work" but for the life of me, I just don't see the difference. There again, I did just plug it in to a USB cable that I have connected to a wall adapter... :/
Ok, apparently I can't read.. I did see the cab and everything else but missed the part saying that it included a GSM compatable nuebattery - I thought that this cab was useless to what I was trying to do.
I've installed it along with the driver which states only Titan/Vogue but as expected it doesn't work, I'm still getting around 160mA reading.
battery.dll goes in the Windows folder but I don't have a battery.dll, I seem to have a batterydrvr instead. I would try renaming the battery.dll to this and pasting it in but I have a feeling I'll end up with a paper weight until I reflash, unless someone is brave enough to try. This was actually suggested in a thread on here but the discussion ended there.
The full current is allowed to flow when the data lines are shorted. The lines are shorted internally in the adapter, so yes any usb lead can work for "usb mode" and high current "AC mode".
I'm still looking to unlock high current mode for tough pro GSM ...
Need to figure out how to overwrite battdrvr.dll it won't replace it much less rename. Might need to be cooked in perhaps?
Hm is there a way of getting raw access to the files on the internal flash memory, perhaps from a bootable app on the memory card?
Actually, if this program/app/mod supposedly works with the TP2(among others), one would only need to figure out how or where to place the dll. Something tells me it isn't the windows directory; or else it would've worked (logic thinking here). Not saying it's impossible just thinking that if the file was available in this manner, one would think it would be a fairly painless process, right? Keep in mind, I've already copied the file (battery.dll) over to the windows directory with the program installed via cab and I still can't tell a difference. Am I missing something/over looking a step, perhaps?
Going to start over from a fresh flash and copy over the dll then install the cab and see if there is any difference.
The main thing I don't understand is why we don't have a battery.dll, it is a hidden file in the Windows folder according to lots of places and sounds like a critical part of WM6. Hidden or not if it existed though I wouldn't have just been able to paste battery.dll in without any conflict surley as it would still state another file with the same name existed.
I was thinking of emailing nue from the contact link to ask as like you said, there is no doccumentation for whatever reason. If you download Tbattery it shows you the current as +xxx (charging) or -xxx (discharging) so you can see if the driver is working
Bump c'mon I know others here must have something useful to contribute and would really like to get this mod working?

I think the problem was that there is no way to overwrite that file, less you cook it in. I also have no clue as to what the difference is between the two files. Without the censent of the developer of this driver, it would prove quite difficult to re-enineer a drive for the TP (since this was for the TP2, according to the site).
Ok, for anyone interested here is what I did in the end. I bought a £5 Expansys dock which is damn good for the money. I then took it to bits and added a double pole double throw switch.
I took the two data lines and soldered them in such a way that in one switch position the phone data lines would be shorted, allowing full charging current. In the other position the data lines from the phone are connected to those coming into the dock from the PC.
I'm pretty happy with the setup now, all that is required is a flick of a switch to put it in "fast charge" mode. I still don't get the full 900mA but get about 720 with a dead battery which is damn better than the 160 from USB.
If anyone wants any guidance doing this mod I'll be happy to help.
Hi everyone,
I have a problem with Internet Explorer on my HD7
Since yesterday, Internet Explorer refuses to open from the start screen or Apps list. Clicking on web links in emails does not work, clicking on pinned web pages does not work. Live tiles, Emails, RSS feeds, texts, Phone calls etc. work as expected. I have downloaded several third party browsers which work as expected.
I have checked using 3G and Wifi connections, and soft reset multiple times to no avail
I have searched and have not seen anyone else reporting this problem which leads me to suspect it's a device specific software problem. I was following my normal morning routine yesterday, reading the emails with new and updated posts from XDA when it suddenly stopped opening the links in the emails. I tried opening up Internet Explorer and this too failed. The animation transition starts to take place when pushing the I.E. tile, and then it comes back to the start screen.
I am running 7720 and have not played around with the phone or changed anything to cause this problem.
Does anyone have any suggestions or thoughts before I go ahead and press the "Reset your phone" button ??
Thanks in advance,
Garrickus
Work around
Hi,
Got the same problem with no available solution till now.
I just have a workaround for you, disable in settings the "open links in new tab" and you should be able to use IE9 again afterwards.
Tabs will not work though.
I even read somewhere that hard reseting device will not solve the problem !!??
Do it or not and tell me if you find something.
Regards,
Thomas
Thanks

I can confirm your solution does indeed work as you describe, and yes, tabs are now broken
I'm curious as to your firmware version and operator, as there may be a link ?
You say you read "somewhere" that hard resetting the phone doesn't fix the problem , (I haven't as yet done so myself, as I'm currently compiling word docs of Internet Explorer favourites etc. and uploading them to Skydrive so I can restore them later ) which implies someone else has also encountered this problem ?
If a hard reset doesn't work for me (I'm waiting on the weekend to do this as it'll probably take hours ) then I'm seriously thinking of upgrading the sdhc card to a 32gb one and flashing a custom rom
I'll keep you updated.
And once again, thank you for taking the time to reply , with well over a hundred views, I was beginning to think I was invisible

i would flash a custom rom (you have the requirements), its easy to do (just search for it) and the advantages of it are great. you would never want to go back to an official rom again.
I haven't heard of this problem before, and don't have a direct fix - I'd need to examine your phones in some detail to do so.
However, if you have a full-unlocked phone, or you have WP7 Root Tools, I'm releasing an app that can configure your phone to use a third-party app as the default beowser (on my phone, I'm currently using IE+, for example). There are some caveats - not all browsers will be supported, and not all of IE's features work on third-party browsers - but it should work to let you open links sent in emails or SMS or apps. They have tabs too (in fact, IE+ has better tab management than IE9; one reason I use it).
Glad to see it partially solved your problem ;-)
My device is a Samsung Omnia 7 with latest firmware and mango installed (do not have the disapearing keyboard fix).
I suspect either windowbreak interop unlock method or windows phone manager to be the culprit with our tabs problem. Are you interop unlocked ? Have you installed Windows Phone Manager ? Have you sideloaded any app ?
Sent from my OMNIA7 using Board Express
Thanks

Funnily enough, I hadn't heard of this problem either, before it manifested itself on my phone so it can't be widespread.
I'd love to allow you (you Windows Phone Guru ) access to my phone, if it would help me and the community, but, it's my main device and your too far away to visit
I have a stock phone so I doubt there is any kind of dump or something I can do to provide more clarification on the problem, but it's very real and very annoying
I had a quick search for "IE+" in the marketplace, but didn't see it. Could you provide a link please ? Or did you sideload it ?
If the hard reset doesn't work, my carrier has said they will swop it out for a refurbished unit, so I have a couple of options.
If I get my act together by the weekend, I might upload a video of the problem to YouTube for information purposes.
Also, my phone has been exhibiting some strangeness for a while now. Occasionally freezing up, then unfreezing itself. Internet Explorer freezing when the loading bar reaches 4/5's distance, and taking ages to finish loading. Some tiles (third party only) losing their images but not the text, or backing out of an app to the Start screen resulting in all the tiles being empty for a few seconds before filling in. Start screen flashing green and crackly looking. None of them particularly bothered me too much till now.
I'll keep you all posted.

Yes, thank you. I was beginning to go mad with it lol.
I too am running Mango without the disappearing keyboard fix, but I am not windows broken, iterop or any other kind of unlock, or used any kind of programs other than Zune, so we don't have that in common I'm afraid.
Thanks anyway

IE+ is being published to the Marketplace this week, I think. There's a pre-release build of it available on this forum, but I'm not sure if that version supports the required behavior for be-the-default-browser support. I'm looking at other apps too (requires decompiling them, unless I can get a chance to talk to the developer, but that's usually easy).
However, if your phone isn't interop-unlocked, you wouldn't be able to use the switcher anyhow, though. It requires TCB (or "root") permissions, because it needs to write to the registry. It's possible to interop-unlock your phone (I have an HD7 myself), but you'd need to downgrade the firmware first.
The list of bugs you're experienced sounds like it *might* actually be some kind of defective hardware. The usual problem is the internal microSD card that is used for storage on the phone being defective or coming loose. There are a few other possibilities too, though. Unfortunately, trying to fix them yourself is likely to void your warranty, with no guarantee of success.
Video uploaded to Youtube
Hi all,
So my problem persists, and I am due to hard reset the phone to see if that solves the issue in the next couple of days. Before I do so however, I have uploaded a video showing the problem to Youtube for information purposes.
Lets see if anyone else is having the same problem, and if a solution exists.
Here's the link to the video

If the hard reset doesn't work, my carrier have said they will swop the unit for a refurbished one. Does anyone have any experiences of this ? Are they like new ? Or beaten up a bit ?

More people reporting the problem on Microsoft answers forum
Hi everyone,
I checked the Microsoft answers forum and it seems Others are reporting the issue as well
I counted at least half a dozen posts with the same problem as myself here
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...one&CurrentScope.Filter=&askingquestion=false
So far, the only advice offered is to hard reset the phone, with some users reporting this solved their issue. One user reported that although it solved their issue, now their phone tile doesn't work

After hard reset
Hey everyone,
So I hard reset my phone on Thursday
and as a result, Internet Explorer now works again as it should
I decided not to restore a backup, and set up the phone manually (which took about 3 hours ).
A couple of things I've noticed since -
Battery life seems massively improved , now reporting over a days use on a full battery. I'll keep an eye on this as before I was only getting about 14 hours.
Another thing I've noticed is the keyboard. Now when I type, it highlights the word it thinks I want to use in bold, and it definitely didn't do that before
I'll keep you all posted on how things go over the next couple of weeks, if any of the problems I reported show up again, but, fingers crossed, it's all good for now, and loving my phone again.
Thanks for all your input.

Have a question... Does Hard resetting the device keep the os updates ?? (Mango, etc..) Or do you have to apply them again afterwards ?
Thanks for your answer

Yes it does.
Thanks !! Another and last question, does hard resetting keep the phone windowbreak interop unlocked ?
Sent from my MID74C using XDA
Too bad. I have this problem too. Last night after connect to public wi-fi and enter username & password in automatic IE pop-up.
You can't open IE if your setting of "Open links from other apps in" is "A new tab". If change this settings to "The current tab" you can open multi-IE for multi-tab but can't use normal tab.
I think I will HR my device too.

No, interop unlocked will go away.
I am facing similar issue. I guess I know when it started (but not sure about it)
I had opened Google Search app. I was searching some images. In results displayed, I clicked 1 imgage. It opened Internet Explorer. When I tried to open "Tab" from Menu to close tab and exit IE, IE was simply not getting close and it was opening continously. I finally pressed Power button to switch off phone. After phone was restarted, I observed that while internet explorer is open and I open the tabs, it shows absolutely nothing, it doesn't show the tab for the page that is currently open or none of the other tabs that are open. Rather it shows Blank page with symbol to add new tab. But even new tab is not getting added. I tried several reboot on phone but somehow "Tab" thing is broken. I am also having feeling that Internet Explorer running in the backround that will not close even after a restart.
I dont want to Hard Rest Phone, but I think its only Solution for now. Hope MS fix this issue in WP7.8.
Ok, so I have someone's Kyocera Kona S2151 flip phone. Now when I plug it into my pc in device manager there shows two "modems" and a serial port without a driver. Even after installing the specific driver for this phone from the Kyocera website it still says there is no driver. I tried to manually select the driver from the folder that was created during the install, not a single one of the 6 worked. Now all of this might even be a moot point as I don't even know if this device will allow me to pull the pictures off of it using a USB cable attached to a pc and everything on the web says I should be able to but there's also a Kona android smart version. I also can't find anything that says I can't either lol. Now I would Bluetooth but there are no options for sending photos via Bluetooth and whats worse is the antennae for the cell service is going out so it won't stay connected to the tower (I assume its the antennae, I'm not gonna try and fix something this old, also its sprint which just got absorbed by Tmobile which could also be the issue bc its pre sim card).
So, in summary, I am trying to retrieve the photos. You can't Bluetooth them, there's no SD card slot, I can't text or email them due to lack of wifi and cell service issues, Which leads to the only option left, PC USB transfer but I can't get that working either due to what I am hoping is simply driver issues. If I need to use an older Operating system that's fine I have another pc here I can mess with to my heart's desire.
I know this isn't android, rooting, modding, custom os, related but this forum is home to some of the smartest people, it's where I come to get all my instructions and files for phones. if anyone could help I'm hoping it's the community here.
Oops, just saw the "don't post questions here" my bad... sry
Update, I installed xp on an older pc I had sitting around. ALL drivers worked fine BUT it appears the only functionality this phone would have for a pc is to act as a modem. There doesn't seem to be ANY functionality in the way of file browsing or retrieving media. Furthermore, this specific phone lacks media sharing over any other connection aside from the mobile network. So if anyone has one of these old phones and it no longer has service/can no longer connect to towers your only option is going to be a data retrieval company.
Bummer, some older phones are very limited when it comes to retrieval. cheers
