Is there going to be any xda support on this? It's still trickling into Kmart stores right now. but if we are able to OC this, that would be great

Doubt it...

its a great little device for little cash. i bought one today after i heard. glad i did. was this or the bb chumby. this blows it away

Hey Pen --
Have you tried the Kindle app on it? I want an ereader that is bigger than my MT3G and I think one of these would foot the bill if I can find one. My local store only had one and it was on hold for somebody.
I am going to get a rain check today.

until they release the patch which allows the market to work i havent tried it. they should have the patch released by tomorrow

How is the screen?
How do you like the screen and how is its performance in general.

over all i like the device. im used to a resistive screen so thats not a problem. doesnt appear to have the auto rotate screen but waiting to hear back from them to find out what the deal is. the manual talks about auto rotating the screen so it should have it. lack of bluetooth is another draw back but i really dont need it. they also have a 2.5mm headphone jack on them instead of a 3.5 like normal but they are addressing that with an adapter i do believe.
power consumption wasnt too bad. i was using the device for 5 hours yesterday and only used a 1/4 reserve from what it said. so i was only down to around 72% charge after playing with it for 5 hours. was reasonably bright enough in a brightly lit room. the angle one can see is pretty good as well.
the microsd card slot isnt in line properly. so if you insert a card you will want to put a price of tape on the end of it so when you release it you can pull it out. i played hell getting the thing to pull out and it was dragging the top of the card so had to use a pair of tweezers to pull it out.
cant access the market yet so havent tried the nook or kindle apps but that will be my next thing. looking at pictures was good. just as good as my digi pic frame.
over all for what i bought it for i do believe it will work a treat. i was going to buy a chumby either the bb or the sony branded chumby and this will work so much better then either of those two devices.

Augen Tablet
Thanks for the info pen.
It surprises me that that it has a 2.5mm jack. I wonder how it ended up with that. You can get an adapter on Amazon or ebay for a buck or two. That would be important for me because I'd like to be able to watch movies on it when I am on the train to work. That is also why I am interested in the Kindle app.
Everything that I have read seems to indicate that it has an accelerometer to rotate the screen.
I get the feeling that Augen underestimated the interest this device was going to generate and put it on the market when it wasn't completely ready, thinking they could dabble a little and fix problems on the fly with the couple of people that bought them. oops.

My Augen Gentouch78 experience
I just picked up my Augen yesterday at the KMart here in Phoenix (KMart actually called me on my raincheck I had made over the phone! Kudos to them). I like the form factor but am quite disappointed overall. While I don't think it is sluggish in general, the resistive touch screen makes it seem that way. Using your fingernail or an old pda stylus helps considerably in that regard.
Couple of negatives:
1. Market download does not work, as others have pointed out (it just stays in the "Starting Download" phase.
2. Micro SD card is hard to insert/remove (you need to use your fingernail in both cases, and to remove you need to also flick it down a bit to slide out as it seems to catch on the lip of the slot).
3. The device could not "Mount" when connected to my PC via USB. I had better luck when the SD card was not in the device, as I was able to Mount it once then, and saw that I had 1.3GB of free space... even though the device SD card info showed only 246ishMB free... what's up with that? (documentation did say there was 2GB available, so the Mounted drive size was closer).
4. I lost sound twice.. had to power off to get it back (all sounds started coming out as loud white noise). Seems to occur when pressing the top front part of the frame... yup, near where the menu/home/back buttons are.
5. Percentage battery use shows that monitoring cellular network was using 57% of the battery, and suggested turning it off. However, you can't... network settings only have WiFi (I curiously did find a place where it prompted me to turn on Bluetooth, but I don't think it did anything).
6. I wanted to return the unit due to the sound problem, but wanted to clear out my google account info... the factory reset does nothing other than power off the unit, even though that is how they say to clear out all data including the google account data.
7. No auto-rotate. No rotate at all that I can see. Nothing in the setup relating to that, even though the manual says it should be there.
8. Non-US Standard earphone jack
9. No mic or web cam
10. Resistive touch screen makes typing on the on-screen keyboard a PITA. I did get somewhat use to it after a while, but still don't like having to press firmly.
On the positive side:
After manually copying a ripped DVD movie in mp4 format onto my SD card and inserting it into the unit, it played great.
So, first impressions are basically way down there for me.
Some other specs:
- Telechips TCC8900 ARM CPU (on an eval board no-less!)
- Android 2.1 - Update 1
- Build 2010-07-21 (boy did they push these out the door... likely with no testing!!)

they are pushing an update out should be out tonight or tomorrow to fix a couple of the things. i believe the eval board is not correct as someone has found the chinese version of this and it has been out for a while. i just think the cooking of this device wasnt the best. i am just hoping they push 2.2 out on it pretty quickly.

I also got one today
I can confirm the market is not working for me either.. Yes build date is really new. haha.. I'm trying to get apps installed by emailing myself APK's to Gmail but I need something like APKatcher to do it. So so far I've not installed anything, but going into settings, aplications and manage I was able to kill the running apps and speed it up.
So far it's a cool little device. I also lost sound once and a reboot fixed it. haha (interesting) I watched 20 minutes of avatar and it looks incredible and gets much louder than a cell phone.. My 16GB MicroSD card went in fine.
There's a Stylus if you guys didn't figure that out yet. Makes typing extremely easy.
Anyone know how I can install some APK's?

ES File Manager comes Pre Loaded.. you can add any app APK to the SD card. and use ES File Manager to install
Installing Quadrant, and some games right now.. I'll post back

Rainchecks
I got two rain checks tonight. I want to get one for myself and I know my wife will want one if it is cool.
If anybody really wants one and lives in Eastern PA, they have 4 of them in the Reading PA store. That is a little far for me to drive and I like getting a rain check because I can make sure they are going to put out an update to make the market work.
It seems like the early reviews are mixed at best but c'mon...they are $150. I mean, if I can get my 6 year old to watch a thomas the tank engine video on it for a few minutes of peace each day, I have gotten my money's worth.

Dev thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7409528#post7409528

Well I got one yesterday and it is horrible.
I am hoping their support can help me get the screen a bit more responsive.
I mean I have to press on it like I'm trying to push through it.
The manual says there supposed to be a calibrations but there isn't.
The manual says there is an option to allow this to orientate according tot he direction held but theres not.
The manual says that when you charge the device the light should be red in color turning green when fully charged well I charged over night and its still red.
When I turn it on it says 100% battery...
Also I went into market which is like that on my Droid1, Incredible, Droidx... and chose to install a app like dropbox, weatherbug, MyMemo, SlingPlayer and it sis there saying downloading but its not.
I have my wifi connected to the device...
Anyone else with ideas???
I so wanted this to be a iPad alternative!!!
Thanks

I got one last night... I side loaded a bunch of apps from my Incredible... LauncherPro, Pandora, Quick Settings, Android System Info... Awesome Drop...they all work... The weird thing is some of the apps force the screen to Portrait, but i haven't found an app yet to turn it back.. (aside from rebooting)
I noticed the sound is wonky... sometimes it works...
I also noticed something installed called Dev Tools... It has a terminal, a bunch of dev settings, a package browser, sync tester, and some google tools..

I got one today as well. So far, all is not well.
Wifi seems to be an issue. I can connect to my network if I turn off security, but when I enable WEP, this thing just sits here and says 'Obtaining IP Address' and then shows 'Unsuccessful'. I have tons of other devices connected. The problem is not the network.
So, with security off, I played with it a bit. The browser seems to work fine. It defaults to mobile pages and I'd love to turn that off. No Flash as expected.
I also have a problem with sound. When anything produces sound (mp3, video, youtube, even clicking on something) all I get is horrible white noise.
I get constant alerts that things have failed to download. I assume that this is due to the Marketplace issue.
I threw in a micro SD that I had. I have no problems with it sticking as others have reported.
I will admit that this is my first taste of Android. I am a professional developer for other platforms though so I'm not a total knucklehead - just partial.
I hear that an update is imminent. Anyone have any info about this? Will it be done via the SD card? USB?
I REALLY want this to work
Greg
Update:
Looks like a reboot fixed a few things now. I am now connected to my secured network and sound is ok. So now I have a more or less functioning tablet.

You guys aren't having screen issues?

This is posted on the Augen website:
Patch for GENTOUCH78 Tablet (available 1700EST)
Dear Augen Customers (GEN Nation),
Thank you for showing your support and interest in our GENTOUCH78 Tablet. We became aware of the technical difficulties over the past 24 hours, and we will be posting an update for a patch to the software at the following link: http://augen.helpserve.com/ under latest download files within the next 48 hours.
Just to mention a few technical difficulties we have found and are patching are:
the memory size of 284mb not being shown as 2GB will be corrected as this is a glitch in the software.
Android Market place not being able to download apps will be fixed in this patch, as this is a glitch in the software. As of right now the operating system and pre-loaded applications are using .5 Gb so the available space displayed should be approximately 1.5GB.
To solve the issue with the headphone jack being too small for a 3.5 mm headphone connection, we ask you to send us an email to [email protected] with your Name, Adress, eMail Adress along with a proof of purchase. We will be sending you at our expense the 2.5 mm headphones to go along with the unit within 15-20 days. All future products that will be manufactured will have the new patch and a 2.5mm earbud to go along with the unit.
We want to make it a great experience for our customers. We apologize for disappointing some of you, and we are doing our best to make it a great experience at Augen.
Thank you for your support,

WM6 (Boom) on G4 Crashing

Hi All,
I installed WM6 (with Boom logo) sorry was a long time ago, and cant remember the Official ROM title.
Been working great for ages, but over the past few days its been crashing (freezing, followed a few seconds later by screen fading out with various coloured vertical lines) and the only way to reboot is remove battery and start again.
There does not seem to be any pattern to when it crashes - sometimes minutes, but ran all weekend without a hiccup.
I have tried Axios CloseApps 1.40 to get rid of everything running that i dont need and this hasnt helped (crashed immediately the confirm screen came up once). Also run Reg Cleaner to see if that helps, cured a couple of issues but still crashing. Did have overclock at 240, but turned this back to 192 and still falls over.
No new programs installed recently... hadn't been sync'd in 80 days. Tried syncing aswell....nada
Anyone with any ideas??
Many thanks for any pointers
Nod
Just remembered - TNT Rom
Sorry - brain fade tonight!

Sounds suspiciously like a memory issue. It's possible you've somehow gotten your Extended ROM corrupted, but that's not very likely. The more likely issue is you're simply out of memory from loading too much on your phone, or (and still more likely) you don't clean out your phone periodically as you should.
D/L this and run it on your machine: ClearTemp. This will clear out temporary files, and remove dead links, etc. from your phone that are taking up space and helping nobody.
Hopefully you have DotFred's Task manager. Run it, go to notification manager, and delete all duplicate notifications. (See his feature list for explanation.)
Another suggestion: Use Advanced Configuration Tool to change the default locations of pictures, video, and documents to your SD card. If you're not using an SD card...get one.
If you already do these things, I apologize for preaching to the converted, but these seem like the most likely fixes.
Another slightly more painful solution would be to back up your PIM data and your personal files, and do a Hard Reset. This would strip away all your customizations, and remove all programs you've added, but it would also put your registry back in pristine condition, and scrub your memory of any buggy material.
Hi Myrddin,
Thanks for the advise...
I have used Clear Temp and looked at the TaskMgr, but did not know exactly what I could clear out or not... clearing duplicates and Scripts reduced the notifications down to 83 from 367!
Runs quicker if nothing else
I haven't a great deal of files on it, running a 2GB card which has TomTom on (program runs from card) with Euro and UK maps, and plenty of room for pictures etc which I save on the card anyway. Oxios states that i have 15ish MB free, so didn't think capacity was an issue. Have moved what little I had left over to the card.
Will try a Hard Reset as last resort, but noticed two things today - had a small piece of plastic under the SIM card (which is now removed) - may have been disturbing contacts with SIM.
This got me thinking... it seems more often that not when I put the Wizard into my Car Cradle (handsfree speaker/charger) it crashes. Could this be a battery/power connector issue? (no problems when I connect to PC via USB).
Many thanks
Noddy
PS Dont worry about preaching to the converted - even the converted need help occasionally!!

That sounds bad. Yes, I think it is possible you have a connector issue. I doubt you have a battery/power issue, otherwise. Do you have problems syncing the phone to a computer? If so, that would be the clincher for a connector problem. Otherwise, it may just be a less than stellar cradle connector.
Your SIM card debris issue doesn't sound related to this, but may have been related to your other problems (though I think this is unlikely).
Think it might be slowly dying :-(
Hi Myrddin
I think I have come to the same conclusion unfortunately.
Performed Hard Reset in the end which I thought may have fixed the problems, as no crashes for a few days, but then it happend again. DOH.
There are no problems when I connect via USB, and the Cradle is an official TomTom version and seems in pretty good shape. My wife's Wizard does not have this problem so I'm assuming it's my Phone and not the cradle unfortunately.
I think I am left with three courses of action
- flash an upgraded OS (6.5) to see if that improves stability (however the TNT build's I understand are pretty rock solid anyway)
- or take it apart and see if "anything wobbles" probably screen connector seems most appropriate as when placing in the car unit the only real way of pushing it in is by the front half of the top otherwise the SD card pops out or I hit the power button (my fingers aren't the smallest!)
- or purchase a new phone (I know I will probably get flamed for this, but the Glofiish X800 looks OK for circa £200)
Ho Hum. Thanks for all your help

[Q] Phone memory isn't mounted, won't mount

Hi everyone
My girlfriend just got the G2x yesterday. We plugged it into her macbook and created a folder on the drive that showed up on the finder called 'Music.' Tried to copy some music over from her laptop and the problems started. First, the phone wouldn't eject from the finder, saying it was in use. Second, after trying to figure out how the phone was in use but finding nothing running, we unplugged the USB without ejecting (probably not the best idea). The phone froze. Third, after a hard restart and a few reboots, the media scanner freezes on 'scanning for errors' when starting up.
Now it won't take pictures, saying 'mount your Phone memory', and when we go to the options for mounting the various drives under settings>SD & Phone storage, all the options to mount drives are grayed out. Also, there is no information listed for any of the storage. We tried doing the factory reset but the same problems occur (media scanner freezes and drives won't mount). When I plug it into my desktop, the drive shows up as completely empty. No volumes, no partitions, nothing. Using the sdk shell to look around, I can find no sign of either the folder we created or the files that we copied.
Any ideas? My android experience is minimal, though I am comfortable using the sdk stuff to take a look-see. This is probably most easily solved by simply returning it for a new one, but I enjoy figuring this stuff out if at all possible. It also helps avoid making the same mistake in the future.
Thanks for any help or advice. Sorry for the length.
sounds like you got one of the 'bad' ones, the first shipment were supposedly littered with bugs similar to your issue, returned mine and has been flawless except for the screen bleed stuff. Id just return it if i were you.

I really like the phone but this is pretty frustrating. On top of that, the LGForums are just littered with other issues the G2x has. They are also very quiet on when the bug fixes are coming.

I was advised of a bad first batch. My 2nd one was made Apr 28th. No issues aside from worse screen bleed than my 1st one.
But that's never bothered me like some others. I never see it with real world use.

A few gripes maybe you guys can remedy.

Hey everybody,
I am a reformed iPhone loser, I had the original 2G, got the 4 for about a week and a half on release, and a good friend of mine talked me into returning it for a captivate and I have been hooked on droids ever since. I am an IT guy by trade and a tinkerer in general so Android is perfect for me. Found this site and haven't looked back.
Recently my company put me on their verizon plan and I opted for the Charge as I have been very happy with my Galaxy phone from Samsung. My company is cool and doubt they would mind me throwing custom ROMs on this beast, I just have to build up the courage to risk the warranty on this thing. Anyway, now that my overly long introduction has been done, here are a few gripes I've found so far and hopefully you guys can help me with.
The basics (non development related)
1.) I love the factory e-mail app, the fact it handles both my corporate and gmail in one central app is nice. However, the Gmail app still takes priority for whatever reason and all my gmail mail goes to that, but if I manually press refresh on the e-mail app, it will load. I have tried to uninstall the Gmail app but as you all know, it's embedded.
2.) My cappy handled threaded texts very well, my charge seems to break up the bubbles by pages like a normal phone would. I will get seperated messages all the time, hate that.
3.) I get a lot of double text messages, no clue why.
4.) My SD card has already corrupted, I took a picture yesterday, clicked on the small thumbnail in the corner and deleted it from there, all of a sudden all of my pictures turned to small grey boxes with ? symbols. The phone still detected the card and displayed the storage space, but I kept getting a notification the card was damaged. Eventually I formatted it, but then couldn't get it to mount. I physically removed the card and the battery and let the phone sit for 2-3 minutes, then put it back in, and after media scanning, the card was working again. I could then take pictures, and store them normally again.
5.) Random data droppage, from 3G to 1x to nothing, then back to 3G. Never had so many time outs on the web browser before. The WiFi also seems to be pretty bad, sitting next to my router at home, I was getting 1-2 bars?
Development related
1.) Like I said, I haven't even attempted anything yet, but from my initial reading it seems like Samsung and VZW have teamed up to make it more difficult to get root on these phones. On my cappy a simple .zip installation through recovery could get root, but to have to flash a kernel to get root, seems risky and unnecessary.
Hopefully this phone will grow on me as I start to explore the third-party stuff more, I know custom ROMs on my cappy made the phone a completely different beast.
Thanks,
-be
Glad to have u on board with the Charge! Ok to address some of ur issues, the one issue that I seem to have in common with u would be the signal dropping. That has to be the most annoying thing. Its not something I can pinpoint myself, but I would guess it has to be something to do with a faulty antenna in the phone or maybe some issues with the towers. I've taken it up wit VZW and there isnt anything they could do except send me a replacement, which STILL has the reception issues.
Another thing u will notice is that sometimes ur data reception just wont return AT ALL. pulling the sim card and battery for a few mins solves this issue.
When it comes to developement, rooting this phone is as easy as u would think. Flashing a kernel with Odin isn't a pain at all. Very simple. Flash the recovery, then kernel to lock the recovery in. From there, flashing via CWM is easy. U know the drill comin from a Captivate I assume.
Hopefully some of this helps u out man! Don't be scared to take the plunge!!!!

Welcome to the droid charge. for your email problem, open the settings app, scroll to accounts and sync, select your gmail and then uncheck sync gmail. now go to the email app, open your gmail, press menu, press account settings and check email notifications. now go into email check frequency and put it at what youd like.
The data drop problem happens to me maybe once every few months and it will be fixed in the gingerbread update with the new radio software. your sd card problem appears to be solved. the double messages would be solved by downloading a third party messaging app or doing a data wipe (in settings>privacy>factory data reset) but that will wipe everything except for your email and contacts and you may get some of your apps back automatically but for the most part you would have to reinstall redownload them manually
Kernels arent very risky because there is almost no way to file brick this. there is a full odin which will completely bring it back to stock. also if you get a voodoo kernel (almost every kernel) you get improvements to your phone's sound quality, you get root and you get the option to change it from the laggy samsung rfs filesystem to ext4 filesystem which results in faster boot times, faster media scanning, faster app opening, and pretty much everything gets a small speed boost.
Thanks for all the help guys!
I took the plunge yesterday and flashed Humble 1.5.1 using ODIN, other than having it scare the **** out of me twice by failing before I realized I had to put the battery back in once in download mode, it passed with flying colors and I now love this phone so much more. All my problems seem to be solved with this new ROM too, no more double texts, no more email problems, data seems to be more stabile too.
It's faster, it's simpler, it's not doo doo brown, and it's way better on battery. Looking forward to being apart of this community and trying out all the ROMs.

I actually loled at that last sentence.
The data going in and out has been a problem for everyone on every rom at some point. It's a Samsung/Verizon issue. The quick fix is to go into airplane mode for a few seconds, then turn it off. BTW Imnut's just released an update for his kernels a few days ago that has improved performance fairly well, so look into flashing an updated kernel.

To the people who have this phone, opinions?

Coming from the Captivate and was thinking about getting the Galaxy SII, but didn't want a form factor that big. What are peoples' thoughts on this phone. Is it slow, laggy, buggy? Details please, thanks
I personally like the phone. Its pretty snappy, and gets good battery life. Annoyances I've seen:
1. Exchange e-mail client is an battery hog. This seems to depend on something more than the phone... Even setting it to no push and no auto sync would eat ~10% per hour with no other phone activity.
2. Connecting the phone to my computer in mass storage mode causes certain apps to require a re-install. Example small app: Alchemy Classic. After disconnected from computer, the app will claim to not be installed. Even rebooting phone will not bring app back. Fortunately, this only effects a very few apps and none that I actually use anymore.
Hope this helps you on your quest for a new phone!

The reason that happens is becuase when you mount the SDcard to your computer, it is then not available to the phone, and this WILL cause certain apps that ALWAYS use the card (like a hard drive) to freak out (sort of like pulling your boot drive out of your computer). Your best bet is to go into settings --> applications, and make sure you click on the running tab, and find that application and stop it before plugging into your computer and mounting the SDcard. The other thing that I prefer, because it is way faster, is to use an SDcard reader, and shut my phone off, then put my SDcard into my reader connected to my computer and transfer what I need then put it back in my phone and start it up.

The other thing that I prefer, because it is way faster, is to use an SDcard reader, and shut my phone off, then put my SDcard into my reader connected to my computer and transfer what I need then put it back in my phone and start it up.

I understand. Thanks for the help!

I could be wrong, but I believe you are seeing an SDcard bug with the atrix2 that makes apps stored on the SDcard to behave this way. I preferred to fix...er, workaround this problem by moving all of my installed apps to internal storage. one advantage to the atrix2 is the gargantuan app storage space available internal to the phone. It's about 4.5GB worth and the largest I've seen on any phone.

Coming from the Captivate and was thinking about getting the Galaxy SII, but didn't want a form factor that big. What are peoples' thoughts on this phone. Is it slow, laggy, buggy? Details please, thanks

I also have a Captivate and was planning on the GSII next and, like you, ended up not wanting a device that big. There are things I like better about the Captivate and things I like better about the Atrix 2 - but you aren't asking for a comparison list. They have different UIs and that always takes some getting used to.
I know it's hard to get a good feel for a device at the store because they have them so tethered down. I am glad I got the Atrix 2 and have not regretted it. That said it's not a leaps and bounds improvement over the Captivate. It's a solid and dependable device. It feels good in the hand (a tiny bit heavier that the Cap.) and has not been laggy at all. Scrolling is smooth. I don't know about buggy as I'm not a power user - and I don't root - but I haven't had any problems at all with it spontaneously shutting down or acting wierd or freezing up - at all. The GPS works great, btw and the battery life is decent. The Captivate camera is quite a bit better.
One think I have noticed in the various forums I visit is there aren't a whole lot of complaints about the Atrix 2 like you see with some devices. That does say a lot.
Good luck and happy device hunting!

Looking for thoughts and suggestions...

I am hopeful I can get pointed in the right direction here in the forums... I currently manage information screens for my church, which has 3 campuses around the city. Every week, I drive to the locations, with updated content on a USB Thumb-drive, which I plug into the USB port on the Western Digital Live TV boxes attached to monitors. I then play the videos in a continuous loop until I update the file the following week by inserting a new thumb-drive with the week's MP4 video announcements. I want to set up a solution that will allow me to update these files remotely every week. When I first set up my current solution, I went through several android tv boxes, before settling on the WD live TV box. I ran into issues with the Android boxes not powering up automatically after a power outage, or not starting the video loop if they did come back up. The WD does not have WiFi and does not have local storage, so will not work for my purposes, although they are VERY reliable and don't seem to be affected by the power outages. Cost is a big factor in my decision so please keep that in mind. I am currently leaning towards something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Astro-Tab-A1...0&linkId=cd28feb9fd57773cd3d44ed5abdfd485#Ask My thoughts being that it will have a built-in battery backup in case of a power outage, seems to have plenty of horsepower to do the minimal task of playing a continuous video loop, and hopefully has a reliable enough WiFi antenna so that I can remotely connect to it to do weekly updates. I am also looking for suggestions for tools I can use to connect to the tablet/tv box to upload the new video file and then start the loop playing again. I know Team Viewer is an option, but want to know what else is out there that might work. I am open to any suggestions anyone might have in regards to this project. Also, when I was testing the Android TV boxes, at least on one occasion (I believe it was a Minix Neo X7), I was able to get the loop running and it was fine for a number of days, but would crash. Would restart it and it ran approx. the same length of time. It's been a while since I dealt with it, but seems I recall there may be some sort of cache that builds every time the video loops until the cache fills and crashes the player---I'm NO expert, but that is what I recall from my research at the time. Again, any help is appreciated!
