[Q] ICS 4.0.5 coming to i9020a this month (march)? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I saw some articles on the internet. (mostly rumours) that ICS 4.0.5 would be released for the Nexus S i9020a (for all variants for that matter). Does anyone have any more knowledge on this?
Anyways, so i guess i'm unrooting and returning to stock so that I can get the OTA update. Hopefully it will be out this month
EDIT: Any i9020a users who have received the 4.0.4 update either in the united states (AT&T) or in canada (fido/rogers) please post!

I wish man... but I gotta say this silence from Google is just plain annoying. Yes, I can root and install a ROM (which I already did, running BuglessBeast!) But to ignore every single Thread in their mobile forums regarding the OTA is the worst Customer Support ever.

I feel yaa! I hate it. I was running BugglessBeast too but just returned it to stock so that I can get the OTA update. Just being safe I'll be patient this month. If it doesn't come out by this month I'll root again and run bugless beast. There's something about official updates that makes me wanna have em over custom roms. Don't know what it is lol

Yup, I am sure I will get the Stock OTA from Google and then flash back to BuglessBeast or CM9 again LOL.

nicee I'm waiting this month. I really hope it comes out. Do you know their official site or something where I can follow them? Like I'm following them on twitter for now. Anything else?

Me too, I am just following GoogleNexus from Twitter.

They hardly ever update their status. I wish they could tell us at what stage they're in for the ICS OTA update or at least tell us if we will be getting it or not. I would rather know that I'm not getting the ICS update rather than being left on the edge of my seat for monthsss.. It's been eternity ughh
EDIT: Couldn't stand being on gingerbread. I missed all the features of ICS (especially panorama shot ) So I rooted and went back to the bugless beast rom. LOOOL FTW

I seen a chart of ICS UPDATE release dates somewhere that had NEXUS S receiving the update in MARCH and that's all I've been able to find so I'm really hoping its correct (balls crossed) Have any other PHONES received the update as of yet????? If not then that's a real good sign we're still gonna get it. -KID ANDROID

I've seen that chart too! Let's hope it speaks the truth.

I personally love the ics aosp roms. They will defiantly be better than ota
Don't see how the ota will be better. Plus who needs ota when the custums run so buttery smooth and have such great features.
Edit: as for my signature
I just jumped boat to VGNexus and am loving life. Cheers.

Why concerned that much about unrooting and back to stock ? The xda forums will bring the official update even before Google knows about it lol..

Ain't that the truth!

All articles about 4.0.5 are related to the same french carrier website (SFR). And more especially the dedicated to Android part of the support website.
http://android.sfr.fr/maj-optimisez-votre-mobile-android-mettez-le-a-jour-previsions-7
As a french native speaker, I've been through the page and the comment section below.
On the top of the page you can see a picture according to wich the 4.0.5 OTA is comming to both Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S in march.
Of course, people are asking for a more accurate release date in the comment section wich SFR of course won't provide : still they seem to confirm the 4.0.5 update in March.

Knowing the fact that Nexus's updates usually come directly from Google (*), we may expect the OTA before the end of the month.
Though, I believe most of the SFR Nexus S are the i9023 (almost the same, screen appart as the i9020T if I'm not mistaken) as this is the most common variant in Europe (this is in fact the one I bought from France myself, living in a very near country).
(*) wich they confirm also in the comment section :
"En effet le Galaxy Nexus reçoit la MAJ par Google !
SFR valide le soft mais c’est bien Google qui se charge de la diffusion."

Oh man.. Does that mean that there might not be an update for the i9020a. That's not fair at all most Nexus S are already updated to ICS except for the i9020a which is still on 2.3.6.... some even on 2.3.4 NOT FAIR GOOGLE... NOT FAIR

At this point, there is no clue wether the i9020a will or won't get the update. All I can say is that SFR wich seems to be the only source of all this articles talking about the upcoming 4.0.5 update is I think mostly (I guess only) using i9023 variant of the NS. As they will only approve the update Google will release for their SFR variant (i9023), it's impossible to tell wich variants the update will target. My point is they are talking about the i9023 on their website but still the update could be sent to all NS variants directly from Google. In fact SFR is really almost nothing in the update process. They are just (as a carrier company) I guess somehow more informed about the upcoming update. They seem to confirm March for the update but refuse/can't (it depends on the dev progress and will to release the update, not on them) to give a more accurate date as I stated in my previous comment.

So, afaik, this "report" is totally false. They aren't even done with 4.0.4. When it is done, then they will deal with pushing out OTAs.

I wonder why people with gingerbread (I can only assumed they did not root because of warranty) care about 4.0.5 when they don't even have 4 at all, or why people with rooted Nexus S care to unroot when they can probably get a better custom ROM than 4.x stock can offer...

You'll want to wait for a rooted version of the OTA anyway. It'll be out hours after the source is released. Then you can just use your favorite backup app to get your stuff back.

I'm the same. I've rooted by all the ICS ROM's still have bugs. I'd already have a Galaxy Nexus if they did not delay and delay then have volume bugs! If they released all the drivers from day one, we'd have a million decent custom ROM's...
the nexus s is supposed to be an android flagship phone. Its built with vanilla android so its the first and easiest phone to update, yet for weeks now people are walking around with 4.0 on their galaxy nexus and nexus s users are still left in the dark. say what you will about apple but when an update comes out all compatible devices receive the update that day. obviously im not saying every android should get this update in a timely manner, but a phone by google made for this situation certainly should
I have a question when they said that nexus s should receive ice cream sandwich within " weeks" after galaxy nexus release. Do you guys think the clock has started or are did they mean release in the united states?

Yeah, you may want to recall how us Nexus One users were treated with Gingerbread when the NS came out. ICS was probably developed primarily on the GN, so NS development slips on the totem pole. At least you are getting official ICS...

Because unlike the Community, Google has certain standards it must meet before releasing an OTA. I mean no respect towards the community but no company could ever release partially working builds.

The Nexus S will get a ICS update LOOONNNGGGG before any other phone will and ICS was built for the Galaxy Nexus so THAT was the first and easiest to develop for. The Nexus S is next.
I don't really care the Nexus S gets the update before other phones, I just want it asap.
I'd gladly have every compatible phone receive ICS tomorrow as long as I got it on my NS.
And, much as I don't like it; the Apple comparisons are true. Apple do release new OS available for everyone to download on the same day their new device featuring that OS is launched.
People say that it would be ridiculous to expect updates until the GN has been out a while, but why? Google should have made the next update available on the day they announced ICS.

Apple also restricts new features to older phones to encourage people to upgrade. Just look at Siri as a fine example, it's *only* available on the 4s even though it's been proven that it will run fine on the 4. Similar constraints can be found with each model upgrade.
When ICS comes out for the nexus S, it will be fully functional with no neutering of any feature. so how does one "encourage" people to upgrade? you delay the update to crank in some early sales.

of course there will be, there already are roms available now for the g1. the original iphone obviously has the same problem the g1 has, hardware limitations. When 4.0 came out the iphone 3gs was laggy and almost unusable until apple released a second update to fix the mess. But were losing sight of the point, when an OS is released by apple all phones (fine all compatible phones) get it that day. Sure it doesnt have all the features as the newest iphones, and by not all the features i mean ONE feature as in siri, but they get the update at least. What have we received since the galaxy nexus was released? And i honestly dont even care enough to keep talking about it, but when ever people hear about apple they always have to but in with "YEA BUT APPLE SUCKS CAUSE ____" which isnt the point, i was making a comparison.
like i said before all because one statement is true, it doesnt make the other statement false.

ICS in January ?!

If carrier estimates February unlocked versions will get it faster right?
Well I hate to see this there is another thread with a link to this same info. I see now that this was posted before that one was, they should have looked before posting the other one. Anyway I still say good find here as well.
Now as for your question, no this does not mean "unlocked versions" will get it sooner. The Sensation in all honesty will more than likely have a ICS ROM that is good enough for a daily driver by February, but it will be a port or a AOSP build. But if you ask me even a AOSP would be able to be considered a port as the only source released right now is the source for the Galaxy Nexus. Therfore you still have to do Portia.g work to get a ICS AOSP build for the Sensation working. But one of these is how we might get a ICS ROM before the official update. You have to be what I think you are calling "unlocked"to be able to flash one of these ROMs. Being unlocked will not make you eligible for the official update any sooner. This totally depends on the OEMs and right now it looks like February is when we can start looking for the official update to start rolling out.
I think ICS will be officially released in feb/mar..
I think he meant that there probably will be a ICS sense leak from HTC in around januari. And yes probably there will be one

Why would a carrier have an "exclusive" release for an "update"? That would be a first.
Another thing to think about, the SGS2 has a "April" expected date, although there has already been leaked "Test" roms.

I remember the leaked update roadmaps for Samsung Galaxy S this year and for HTC Hero last year.
Samsung Galaxy S: all blogs share the leaked update roadmap that was saying "the Gingerbread update arrive in gen/feb"..... In the end arrived in may.
HTC Hero: "Eclair surely comes in feb" the update arrived in June...
In my opinion we won't se the official update till feb/mar...you can think what ever you want...
Oh, I forgot to mention the Asus Eee Pad Transformer: In november the CEO said "The update will arrive within the end of the year"...last Asus communication "the update will arrive in feb"
So my experience tell me "don't trust in this rumors" LOL

ICS Update Galaxy Tab Wifi (GT-P6210)???

Has samsung released when they are planning on releasing the ICS update for the wifi version? Or is it possible to make an ICS rom for p6210 from what they have released?
Best to wait for an official release. From what I've seen, there is a lot of bugginess in the current CM9 builds. It can't be too far off now.
...I hope

There has not been any specific date announced for Samsung's US 6210 release. Apparently at least one UK user has it already.
CM9 is really close. WIFI should be working now.
Samsung US is the slowest of the slow
It always takes Samsung US the longest to release updates. They are horrifically slow so just hang in there. A concept Samsung (overall) has never grasped is that these user forums do not differentiate between the the different country models when they create a forum for a device (which the forums shouldn't have to do anyway). The problem that Samsung seems oblivious to is that if you perform upgrades to the devices for Asian countries but neglect to do so for Europe or the United States in any type of timely matter, it just creates very ill will on the parts of the world that they seem to be ignoring. It becomes a case of the "have's" and the "have not's". Unfortunately the upper management at Samsung are "have not's" when it comes to brains and I doubt they will ever figure out that they give the appearance of screwing over some of their customers. This is not to say that the P6210 will not get its upgrade. I am sure it will. You just have to wait for the incredibly slow and somewhat brain dead people at Samsung. Isn't their company motto...."We love your money, we could just care-a-less about you?

HTC told me its coming to both variants but other than that there is no evidence.
Same here, they told me it's out for a while and maybe I should wait for the OTA to show up, but it's just a lie. There is no 4.0.4 for the VilleC2 at the moment
Patience is a virtue
I realized a bit too late that my One S is equipped with the S3 snapdragon... (I havent even known it had different versions until now) so I successfuly soft-bricked my recovery =/ I've found the stock RUU so I can restore it, but...
I ADVISE ANYONE AGAINST TRYING TO FLASH CUSTOM ROMS ON ONE S VILLEC2 (S3) JUST YET.
There's simply no point to it, because there aren't any roms available for now. Be patient ;]
True, modding potential on S3 are just garbage..

How long time lag between up-dates of S4 and S3 processors can be? 1 month,2...
Doesn't HTC care about its customers loyalty? - after they sell device with old-fashioned engine by the same price (genius decision ), they also deprive us of service.
With this "devil-may-care" attitude I doubt that my next device will be HTC-made.

4.0.4 will land on S3 soon couse s3 version is not just for poor arias like taiwan and serbia and so on but whole europe have s3 and s4 version at the same time and many people dont eaven know that thay have s3 version. And if you concern about jb ...we will get is couse HTC loosing market and thay do anything to hold down thay custumers by the way s3 version is still great and fast phone.
Here in Romanai also no upgrade, but I'm sure that we will all get it sooner or later

I don't think the S3 will get updates at all. Who cares about Updates besides of us? I know a ton of people who don't care about updates and have their Sensations running with 2.3.7 or their Desires with even older ones.
I'm really ready to accuse HTC if they won't release any updates for this phone!

You answered your own question. S3 owners are a minority, no offense. Accuse HTC of what? Most people don't care about software updates. Sorry.

Not rumors,it is official by Samsung that tab 2 will get 4.2.2 .....
All deviced launched in 2012 (and some from 2011, as Galaxy SII) with dual-core processor will receive 4.2.2...

I already asked in another thread, but I will ask again... Can you please refer me to the official statement by Samsung about 4.2.2 update for particular devices? Not by SamMobile, not by some gadget review site, but actually by Samsung? All links I can find so far refer to "insider leaks", mostly the one posted by SamMobile back in March. Some sources say Sammy will update a list of specific devices, and some say that all dual-cores will get an update. You can trust those sources as much as you want, but this info is just a rumour at this point.
If you can give the link to the actual Samsung's announcement, I will thank you, and publicly apologize for being unable to use Internet search...

Samsung only gave one official pronouncements about Android updates (Denying that Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab were able to get oficial ICS), all information is given by people who work inside Samsung that send information to sites like SamMobile.
SamMobile is a very reliable source, that was posted all devices with processors will be updated, but it is clear that some will be left out.
The Galaxy Tab 2 series was launched in 2012 with the Galaxy SIII and Galaxy Note 10.1, I mean it's still a new device and it still has the attention of Samsung.

No, that's not what I meant... Hell, I DO want to believe it, I trust SamMobile (within reason), and I sure hope these reports are true. Even though I am still quite skeptical, I will be the first to admit I was wrong, when (or if?) 4.2.2 rolls out to S2 and Tab 2, both of which I own. Just please, don't call it "official", unless it comes straight from the horse's mouth. It's misleading.

I understand you...
Once, I asked them via US online Chat but they didn't know nothing about Android updates...
Maybe if someone try to ask via twitter and get lucky to they see it and reply, it would be great! :good:
not even the s3 or the the note 2 have it yet( i say one more month)
so i can say that IF the galaxy tab 2 were to receive 4.2.2 it will be somewhere around december
