The ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity Thread - Asus Transformer TF700

Since there isn't a TPI forum (yet), I thought we should have a thread to discuss all issues related to the Infinity. News/announcements, release dates, spec changes, etc. So here we go.

What are the implications of the improved screen resolution? Someone mentioned eBooks... obviously 1080p movies. Other ideas?

Ughh... I know the new back plate is appose to help with the wifi, GPS, issue for those suffering from it. Personally i am not but that new back plate i think is yucky compared to the current.
But the higher resolution does grab my attention.

I think this will be unnecessary upgrades for the most part.
Resolution your eyes will barely notice.
Different cpu thats slightly improved.
plastic panel so it will actually work.
Everything else is practically the same.

The question is will it blend! At least if you are a original Prime owner and want a the new model when it arrives. The current dock will work with the TF-700. One less thing you have to buy i guess.

One of the press releases said it'll come in Amethyst and Champagne Gold.

Yes, it should blend. I am hoping so, my dock is non-returnable so I'll keep it for the Infinity.

But my icons would be so small! I need lower resolution so that my fats fingers can tap the icons. Sorry, I don't want to hijack the thread.

I wonder if the full HD resolution has any upside if you don't plan on watching a ton of movies on it? Wouldn't the text be much smaller, obviously. I can't see the resolution helping youtube videos out much being most of the HD ones are in 720p. I dunno if that made sense lol.

Reading text is a huge benefit. Big docs done in Word and Excel will also be much easier to read and manage with a higher resolution screen. If your video library is done in 1080P/MKV not only with they look better they'll play better because they'll no longer have to downscaled buy the GPU and s/w to fit a lower res screen.

If you look at the pics and video of the TF700 and Acer A700 the UI seems to scale up so it seems that icons and such will be the same size. In-app icons and navigation buttons would be smaller I'd imagine.

Gotcha, makes sense. When is the 700 due for release in the USA. June? Id gladly hold onto my Prime for 2-3 months and sell it a few weeks before it arrives "IF... i decided on it". Im sure there will be plenty of vids on youtube of people over in Europe that get their hands on it first to test soon. This way i can decide is it really worth it.

Since the Prime is mentioned as being "for early adopters," one wonders then if other models--being more mainstream--will have bootloader unlock. Somebody should ask Gary Key.

The 300 should.. It was in the build prop as transformer tf201x lite....
I imagine they have it setup with the updates that it would change the necessary things between tablets... Just like changing the few things from us build to WW build

Hopefully we'll start seeing these puppies for sale in June

The date of the availability of the Infinity is very important.
It should replace the TF201 and the 300 series should replace the TF101.
I expect the same range of prices of the actual products.
In terms of diferences between Prime and Infinity, the improvement of the Wifi and GPS with the plastic part on top of the pad should be main thing.
The screen resolution wil not benefit for 95% of the users.

That would make a lot more sense than keeping the 4 products on the market. Probably this will be the long term goal.

Funny, on what grounds do you say that the resolution wont benefit 95% of the users.
If thats the case then they should have just kept 1024x600 till now

[Q] Build quality?

For the lucky few who have their transformers, how is the build quality? I'm actually typing this up from my Motorola Xoom right now and really like it. But the transformers IPS screen is really drawing me. Also some of the other features like the dock, and front facing speakers. But the larger size is scaring me away. The bezel looks alot bigger the on the xoom especially length wise. Is it noticeable \ bothersome? I really like the xooms design and build quality
. How do you guys feel about Asus's? anyone with experience with both who can comment?
I have a few more days to return the xoom so I need decide if waiting for the transformer to come to the us is worth it.
Also is the transformers bootloader going to be unlocked for sure?
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk
its very nice build, does not feel cheep. there is a little movement on the back if you press it in the right place. but apart from that its perfect in my opinion. im using swiftkey tablet beta. which is perfect and makes typing on it super easy. and in portrait its super easy to type. im finding everything on it much easier to do than on my girlfriends ipad. i've always like asus since i got a eee 4g surf(one of the first netbooks). and a eee pc 1001ha(netbook). and always been impressed with there build quality and design.
cant say about the bootloader. but im sure people will try. i know paul from modaco. has a eeepad. and has all ready rooted and optimize it. just waiting for honeycomb source so they can deodexed the system allowing. custom kernels, roms, mods ect
You've been watching videos, but haven't actually seen one ?
The bezel looks big in the videos becasue you can't see the very nice old gold casing that surrounds the device, i may be a bit larger than the xoom or galaxy tab, but after you've picked it up twice you don't notice it.
the main unit, pad, is solid built, and most of the unit is metal, i will consider it heavy, especially if you combine the keyboard, as both unit has built in battery, but you do get over 14-16 hours of use, comment from asus rep, and it's very thin.

you obviously haven't tried the thumb keyboard
By far the best keyboard for a 10.1 tablet. I tried them all including the swiftkey beta. Thumb keyboard just released a beta you can get for free I was using the paid version before the beta. Its not as pretty as the swiftkey beta but for functionality its hands down the best http://thumb4beta.blogspot.com/

I love thumb keyboard. Thanks for the beta link.
Anyone want to be daring and do a teardown of their transformer
Then we would truly know the build quality

Are you meant to, as the name suggest, typing with you thumbs?
On real keyboards I type with all 10 fingers, so I wonder how it works on a touch screen. Probably not at all.

It's just a name man... It has a layout very similar to the swiftkey beta split layout(just works a hell of a lot better). There are actually 4 or 5 different layouts in the the paid version and you can have different layouts based on landscape or portrait .

Yeah you can. The point is to be able to hold the device and type at the same time. With a tablet, it is kinda hard if the keyboard isn't split because it is physically hard to reach the center part of the keyboard.

I'm actually quite tempted.
I'm one of those oddballs who doesn't mind large devices, and that being the case its mostly positives from where I'm sitting (obviously will be too large for many to use as their day-to-day phone!).
that 7,7 Tab sure is nice but i just bought a GT10 some weeks ago so i wont be able to afford it
Maybe i can sell my tab and sgs2 and use this lol
Iam wondering how the Phone function will be implemented in the tab
I'm really tempted on the Note but what are its full specs? I already know about the screen but what are the rest?

all i've seen is a couple videos, i believe this is true:
dual 1.4 or 1.5Ghz
5.3 or 5.5 samold (Super HD) screen
stylus (wwoooohooooo !)
8MP rear cam
1.4MP front facing cam
2600Mah battery (wooooohoooooooooo!)
gsm and/or lte
it is a little big for a phone, a little small for a tab... but i think it is going to make some huge waves in the market. possibilities with a size like that are awesome.
things to hope for:
DLNA
hdmi-out
1Gb internal memory
microsd
dual sims
noise cancelling mics
GOOD GPS
awesome antenna
awesome battery life
i'm really looking forward to a long lasting device in STOCK FORM without a huge battery hanging off the back. we'll see if this comes through or not. i will be buying as soon as the early adopters confirm the bugs are minimal and livable. hope !
good job samsung

thanks, now I'm even more tempted now. I can't wait until they release this. Is there an estimated release date yet? I would sell my SGS2 for this.
What I discovered:
5.3 HD Superamoled
1.4 Ghz Exynos
1 Gbyte RAM
LTE and HSDPA
16/32 Gbyte versions
8 Mpixel rear / 2 Mpixel front cam
I am more than tempted. I want one now.

I'd LOVE this. Undoubtedly a late US release. Question is when til Espansys etc will have it?
Seems like this is more of a Tablet than a Phone, which kind of defeats the purpose IMHO (if it's actually released like that)
Linux Insider said:
While the Galaxy Note is an unusual size, it packs a strong set of features. As for whether it leans more toward being a phone or a tablet, it seems to favor tablet.
"I'll call it a tablet because it will not be supported for cellular voice," Chris Hazelton, research director for mobile and wireless at the 451 Group, told TechNewsWorld.
"It does support IP communications such as VoIP and Skype," he said. "It has a very good camera, a great processor, and a great screen. But it's hard not to compare it to Dell's (Nasdaq: DELL) 5-inch tablet, which has not gained much traction in the market."

This is an ASUS Transformer Prime forum. Please do not post about iPads. We bought TFP's because we (or at least I,) don't care to hear about Apple constantly.
Wow, that is an insane res...
I tend to really Really dislike apple, for a multitude of reasons, but it becomes harder and harder to cling to my ways sometimes...
I mean I totally prefer everything about Android, except the fact that what makes it great is also one of its biggest challenges. Segmentation.
I thought the TFP would be the answer to the Ipad2, and possibly be able to hang with the ipad3 in terms of specs...but we all know how that is going.
Still going strong with android, still hating on apple (and admitting it)....still a closet case for their hardware and build quality.
Competition is a good thing. I posted this for all of those ATP would be owners like myself on their 3+ ATP system in pursuit of a working Prime. Instead of complaining about the ATP and cluttering up the forum, I have posted a viable solution, soon to be announced then released.
There is light at the end of the tunnel.......................trust me

I don't know, its interesting to hear what the competition has to offer, especially when the prime is littered with so many bugs that Asus refuses to fix, but would rather release a "fixed" version as a new model.
Even the fixed model's(TF700t) resolution pales in comparison. Back to the drawing board Asus.

Until Apple changes iOS.. does it really matter what the resolution is? Ironically, I can say the same about Android.. until we see "apps" to actually take advantage of the display/resolution... WHO CARES??
Oh yea, I guess it does matter to those who like to watch movies....

True, but what better place to discuss the direct competition? Asus is coming out with a prime that runs at 1920 by 1200 if I am not mistaken, and Apple is coming out with an iPad that runs at 2043 by 1536.
Also for the previous commentor who mentioned videos, it doesn't matter as nobody would be watching content at that resolution anyways, just because the prime runs at 1920 by 1200 will you be upscaling your video to that resolution? if so thats kind of idiotic
It will definitely glide through 1080p videos though, which is what today's standard is after all.

An A6 is in the works which is believed to be a quad core, why is it impossible for Apple to have a quad core cpu when nVidia has tegra 3? Does nvidia know some magic voodoo the rest of the tech companies are not aware of?
Also I won't lie everybody was fooled by the iPhone 5 rumors, but again that's because they believed Apple would go out of their cycle of new design then S model. With the iPad its completely different, and this is hardware were talking about, a leaked SCREEN, a physical object that is in the hands of Macrumors. So its just as legit as when the iPhone 4 was leaked by Gizmodo. Unless someone out there is making a screen for fun that is running at the rumored res of the iPad 3, I think its fair to say this is legit.

Um, are you sure you have your facts straight? do you even know what 1080p is? 1080p is a resolution that is defined as 1920 by 1080, the prime is running at 1920 by 1200 which is higher than that of 1080p, albeit but not that much. Also 1080p is 16:9 while 1920 b 1200 is 16:10, so expect some pretty black bars like what Apple owners have been seeing.

Where do we use the high Resolution?

Internet sites are the same. I dont see more real estate nor do I see in Facebook or other apps. I thought websites would be the same just like My 1920x1200 monitor. If that is so, what is the use of hi-rez on tablets?

They wouldn't design it so that it looks like it would on a desktop. That isn't usability to anyone to have a ton of white space on a website. They utilize the screen as much as possible. It mainly means cleaner text (not being able to see pixels) and being able to play HD content. Outside of that, you won't see that many use cases for the extra high Res screen. Same as the new iPad.

The purpose is better is cleaner picture quality.
Android is mostly resolution independent by design(this is a good thing). This allows display elements to be the proper size no matter what resolution the device is. However, if you want more screen real estate then you should adjust the lcd density in Android.
To give you an idea, the TF700 is lcd density 240 while the TF201 is 160.
If you changed the lcd density to 160 then you would see much much more real estate.
This can be changed by any number of apps or by modifying your /system/build.prop file. I don't know of anyway to change this without root.

However, I don't like the scenes where you previously couldn't really discern shaving errors or pieces of **** or strings of ass hair or boob job scarring or worse while you now get to witness that up close and rather personal in glorious full HD resolution. Also, previously, I'd never imagine ducking away during a train commute to evade the threatening physical consequences of an on-screen "finishing move" --- glad this is not a 3D screen.
EDIT: in this regard, there is no tangible advantage in having crisper text and such, since this filmic genre usually lacks relevant subtitling.

will hand writing text on the FHD screen make a difference?
For seeing high resolution movie.

watching 1080p movies
reading sharp text
sharp photos and need to zoom in to choose the best photo
games really look better
and at the end why not

I will reiterate the sharper text but add another perspective. The sharper text may not seem like a big deal, yet once you are use to it, it is hard to go back. Heck for the first time i am even looking into hi rez laptops.
Many ipad 3 users will say the same thing about ipad 2.
Its kinda like asking why people get HDTVs and dont stick with the old CRT screens.
Personally, I got it mainly for the higher resolution, albeit significantly more light bleed and other issues. I had the TF300, and Acer A500, and others before hand with no similar issues.
All for the same reason that I got my laptop with a 1080p 120hx 3D display. Things just look better.
My only real complaint when it comes to the higher res, if the galaxy on fire game has smaller controls, and gets a little annoying. lol

I have been using a Transformer since the original. I just don't understand how someone can not love these things. I go from furiously typing notes, documents, and spreadsheets at work conferences to taking pictures of slideshow presentations to surfing the web, to watching movies, reading books, hooking it up to the TV in the hotel to stream what *I* want to watch.
I am a big fan of instant gratification and I do not believe there is another series of devices on the market that give these to me. Sure, I can probably do most or all of those things with another device, but no where near as seamlessly and efficiently.
Asus has the fastest update. That's the no 1 reason I go for the infinity. I think galaxy tab 10.1 just got their update to ICS while the transformer OG and prime got updated long long time ago
The stock calculator looks exceptionally well on an FHD screen.
Boots fast
Good video camera
My wife on my wallpaper in full HD . Yeah baby!!
Asus is basically an OEM company that doesn't have the raw marketing muscle of apple or the hardware monopolies of Samsung. It lives and dies by the quality of its products and I've been happy so far with all of my asus products. The Prime did have a lot of issues but I believe it was simply too ambitious a device and Asus did its best to fix issues.
The fact that they make the Nexus 7 too sealed the deal for me. Who else is going to get ICS faster on tablets than asus?

I think you mean Jellybean. ;^)
For me, the screen is sooo beautiful. Also, I'm actually floored by the incredible battery life I'm getting with the keyboard dock connected. I literally take it off the charger at 5:30 a.m., use it heavily all day (assorted activities, screen on a great deal of the time), and only once did I need to charge again before midnight. Most of the time I still have more than 60% each left in tab and dock when I got to bed.
I really haven't experienced lag or any of the I/O issues some reported. My TF700 is flawless. I really love it.

The camera quality is great! Even though prime had the same camera, both of mine took ridiculous quality pics. Worse by far than my cheap ass 3 mp phone. I'm going camping this weekend, and NOT taking my stand alone camera since my Infinity takes such beautiful shots.
I'm still playing with my new purchase and getting the necessary apps installed. I'm finding a few quirks with the interface and the touch sensitivity is a little different from the Galaxy Tab 10.1. My screen has very minor light bleed around the edges. Not is pristine as the Tab 10.1 screen but not distracting either, so I'm keeping my Infinity.
The good is expansion, expansion. Two card slots and a full USB with the dock plus a keyboard. I had to use a USB hub with the USB dongle along with a card reader, mouse, and keyboard with the Samsung. A little cumbersome for a tablet. USB Ethernet works right out of the box, no driver installs or rooting. All of my USB sticks and memory cards work. The external hard drive I have is detected but it is formatted NTFS. All I have to do is move the stuff off and reformat exFAT so I can use on both the Infinity and PCs.

The infinity has an extra lens, and f2.2 aperture, but a much better camera indeed
