[Q] Build quality? - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

For the lucky few who have their transformers, how is the build quality? I'm actually typing this up from my Motorola Xoom right now and really like it. But the transformers IPS screen is really drawing me. Also some of the other features like the dock, and front facing speakers. But the larger size is scaring me away. The bezel looks alot bigger the on the xoom especially length wise. Is it noticeable \ bothersome? I really like the xooms design and build quality
. How do you guys feel about Asus's? anyone with experience with both who can comment?
I have a few more days to return the xoom so I need decide if waiting for the transformer to come to the us is worth it.
Also is the transformers bootloader going to be unlocked for sure?
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk

its very nice build, does not feel cheep. there is a little movement on the back if you press it in the right place. but apart from that its perfect in my opinion. im using swiftkey tablet beta. which is perfect and makes typing on it super easy. and in portrait its super easy to type. im finding everything on it much easier to do than on my girlfriends ipad. i've always like asus since i got a eee 4g surf(one of the first netbooks). and a eee pc 1001ha(netbook). and always been impressed with there build quality and design.
cant say about the bootloader. but im sure people will try. i know paul from modaco. has a eeepad. and has all ready rooted and optimize it. just waiting for honeycomb source so they can deodexed the system allowing. custom kernels, roms, mods ect

You've been watching videos, but haven't actually seen one ?
The bezel looks big in the videos becasue you can't see the very nice old gold casing that surrounds the device, i may be a bit larger than the xoom or galaxy tab, but after you've picked it up twice you don't notice it.

the main unit, pad, is solid built, and most of the unit is metal, i will consider it heavy, especially if you combine the keyboard, as both unit has built in battery, but you do get over 14-16 hours of use, comment from asus rep, and it's very thin.

you obviously haven't tried the thumb keyboard
By far the best keyboard for a 10.1 tablet. I tried them all including the swiftkey beta. Thumb keyboard just released a beta you can get for free I was using the paid version before the beta. Its not as pretty as the swiftkey beta but for functionality its hands down the best http://thumb4beta.blogspot.com/

I love thumb keyboard. Thanks for the beta link.

Anyone want to be daring and do a teardown of their transformer
Then we would truly know the build quality

Are you meant to, as the name suggest, typing with you thumbs?
On real keyboards I type with all 10 fingers, so I wonder how it works on a touch screen. Probably not at all.

It's just a name man... It has a layout very similar to the swiftkey beta split layout(just works a hell of a lot better). There are actually 4 or 5 different layouts in the the paid version and you can have different layouts based on landscape or portrait .

Yeah you can. The point is to be able to hold the device and type at the same time. With a tablet, it is kinda hard if the keyboard isn't split because it is physically hard to reach the center part of the keyboard.

Touch Pro2 International vs Xperia X1i vs Touch Pro1 International (Keyboard Contest)

Let's vote for the best keyboard.
I voted for Touch Pro2 Keyboard.
The best for my big fingers.
I voted TP2, because I am not a fanboy. Touch Pro 2 has the best keyboard I have ever used in a mobile device.
Xperia is second and TP is third. I know many would not agree, but it is down to personal preference in this case. I don't like the TP keyboard.
P.S. TP =/= Toilet Paper
TP2 for size.
X1i is a little too small for my big fingers.
I dont know about the rest of the forum but i have only used the Xperia from that list and im sure most people havent used all 3 too - anywyas i'll still vote Xperia since its all i have
Touch Pro2 is hands down the best keyboard I have ever used on any handheld device. I love it.
I think you mayyyy find this vote a bit skewed, considering it is located in the TP2 section, and most of us are in love with the mobile, its screen, keyboard and its sheer shininess =)

That's why I create the same exact topic in 4 different forums. Haha go look for it if you're good at searching.
Yeah, I know it´s not on the list and device is old and bulky, etc but a fact is a fact:
The best keyboard in a device is this one:

Universal: A device from 2005, and to this date there is no better keyboard in the market!
Have a comparative pic:
p.s I voted for TP2 (As no Universal was included)
ps II to OP, you should include Universal on voting! also the other keyboard models as Dream, Blue Angel, Athena, etc. so this way your poll can reflect really the best one! just a sugestion
Should have also included the Universal in this poll.
The Uni was by far the best keyboard ever, that I have used.
The Rhodium comes second for me.
Got to agree about the Universal keyboard. It was fantastic, and remains one of the best IMO.

right! no offset keys, no ctrl keys, no led indicators. Keyboard is subpar.
I've used all 3 and i really think the xperia keyboard is a piece of junk. I must say when i held the tp1 it just felt right where as the tp2's keyboard feels large. This might only be because i'm coming of the xperia but it feels strange in hand and not as comfortable as the tp1. I think the tp2 keyboard is better though. I just think my previous phones dictate my feelings towards the next. Kinda like presidents. Great ones always follow horrible ones.
I've only used the X1 and TP keyboards and I must say..i VERY much prefer the Touch pros...
as a side note I think the giant space bar on the X1 is a waste of space... and I dislike the lack of arrow keys/function keys etc

First REAL Nexus Prime Leak

"What you are seeing here is the first live photo of the Nexus Prime (or part of it), which comes to confirm several important specs of the upcoming device. First, we've got the HD resolution of the Super AMOLED confirmed - that's 720p on a screen just 4.3" in diagonal. As you can see from the image itself this gives you a pixel density of over 320 dpi, which is certainly more than anyone could need."

Did you take notice of the onscreen buttons? This is definitely the real deal.
GSMArena made the mistake of mixing DPI with PPI, so it's quite possible that the screen is in fact going to be 4.65" just like the SGS 2 HD. The 96 missing pixels are for the onscreen buttons and thus 1280x720 on 4.65 = ppi of 316.

Sorry but the virtual home, back, search, and menu buttons is one of the features Ice Cream Sandwich is making standard in the Android OS. This is probably an effort to cut out on the pesky problem of hardware buttons wearing out as so many people complain about the hard or soft keys on their device stop working. Not to mention the money and time device manufactures can save from not having to put these buttons on a device.
there's an advantage to a hardware button, even if it's a capacitative one
as it can end task when the Apps hung
if it's a soft button, then you are SOL when an App hung, and it hogs the entire screen as it usually does

What are the implications of the improved screen resolution? Someone mentioned eBooks... obviously 1080p movies. Other ideas?
Ughh... I know the new back plate is appose to help with the wifi, GPS, issue for those suffering from it. Personally i am not but that new back plate i think is yucky compared to the current.
But the higher resolution does grab my attention.
I think this will be unnecessary upgrades for the most part.
Resolution your eyes will barely notice.
Different cpu thats slightly improved.
plastic panel so it will actually work.
Everything else is practically the same.
The question is will it blend! At least if you are a original Prime owner and want a the new model when it arrives. The current dock will work with the TF-700. One less thing you have to buy i guess.

But my icons would be so small! I need lower resolution so that my fats fingers can tap the icons. Sorry, I don't want to hijack the thread.
I wonder if the full HD resolution has any upside if you don't plan on watching a ton of movies on it? Wouldn't the text be much smaller, obviously. I can't see the resolution helping youtube videos out much being most of the HD ones are in 720p. I dunno if that made sense lol.
Reading text is a huge benefit. Big docs done in Word and Excel will also be much easier to read and manage with a higher resolution screen. If your video library is done in 1080P/MKV not only with they look better they'll play better because they'll no longer have to downscaled buy the GPU and s/w to fit a lower res screen.

If you look at the pics and video of the TF700 and Acer A700 the UI seems to scale up so it seems that icons and such will be the same size. In-app icons and navigation buttons would be smaller I'd imagine.

Gotcha, makes sense. When is the 700 due for release in the USA. June? Id gladly hold onto my Prime for 2-3 months and sell it a few weeks before it arrives "IF... i decided on it". Im sure there will be plenty of vids on youtube of people over in Europe that get their hands on it first to test soon. This way i can decide is it really worth it.
Since the Prime is mentioned as being "for early adopters," one wonders then if other models--being more mainstream--will have bootloader unlock. Somebody should ask Gary Key.

The date of the availability of the Infinity is very important.
It should replace the TF201 and the 300 series should replace the TF101.
I expect the same range of prices of the actual products.
In terms of diferences between Prime and Infinity, the improvement of the Wifi and GPS with the plastic part on top of the pad should be main thing.
The screen resolution wil not benefit for 95% of the users.

ZAGGkeys Folio White with White Backlit Keyboard

Just wondering if anyone has experience with this keyboard.
Thoughts/Opinions?
I ordered one this morning I will have it by Monday sometime
I'll give another post on Tues.
Anything in particular you are looking for?
I got mine Friday and I love it! (Wish it came in other colors besides white!) It pairs up easily and stays connected. I have note had to use the back light keyboard (the screen lights up the keybaord plenty in a dimly lite room) I love the "touch" of the keys! Makes my Note 8.0 much more functional, to me.
I wasn't sure about paying 99.99 for a keyboard but I'm glad I did! It is just what I was looking for!! Buy it, you will not be sorry!

Hope this helps courtesy of my Android buddy- Gerry:
I just love the Zaggkeys Folio for Galaxy Note 8. A sturdy and solid case with a "rubbery" feel exterior. You just know your Note 8 is well protected with this keyboard case. White is too plain for me though, so I just splashed on a couple of vintage style stickers to my liking.

I think this case with keyboard is the most aesthetic looking for the Note 8.. The bluetooth keyboard definitely adds a lot of functionality if you like to type and email a lot using your tablet. Individual keys are the right size and you won't be fidgeting and fumbling pressing those keys. Lengthy entries are a cinch. However , navigation and key input is not intuitive. The layout is not a typlical QWERTY layout so will need some adjustments on your part. Navigation using the keyboard is tricky and cumbersome, so your best recourse is to use the S-pen or your finger along with key inputs. Think mouse and keyboard like on a desktop. I was hopping to map some keys for gaming but at this point I think it will not be even possible.
Oh! And I can say that watching movies in bed is so much more fun. The screen angle stays in place not like my MOKO slim folio case which hardly stays put.
The backlit keys sure look PUURRRTTYYY!
Final thoughts:
This case somehow takes away from the pure tablet experience of the Note 8. It makes your Note 8 feel like a "small netbook/laptop". With the keyboard, you are mostly forced to use the Note 8 in landscape view. In portrait mode, it feels like you are holding and reading a hardbound novel. The weight difference is significant from a naked note 8 or even one with a slim case. They Note 8 is also not that easy to take out of this case if you want to move between cases. So be prepared to use this as your main case once you pop the Note 8 in.
But for my own purpose, this is a perfect accessory that I need. Useful as it is, I think it is still overpriced at $99. Although I can't find anything cheaper that comes close to the aesthetics and slim fit of the Zaggkeys folio. If $99 will not set you back much, then I recommend you get this one.
I received mine on Monday and is very nice and works perfectly
Some things to note
The hinge does flex dont know the long term durability
By doing a function right arrow you can change the colors of the keyboard
Wish it came in different colors
the charging cable for the keyboard is on the opposite side of the charging of the note 8
Thanks Baratheonist. This is what I was looking for. Still debating if I should get it... not sure if i want my tablet set as a netbook or if I'd like to take it out and put back in from time to time. I have the Asus Transformer Infinity with the dock and I find I use the tablet mostly without the dock but I do find it handy from time to time... plus it acts as an extra battery so that was a plus. Maybe I will give it time.
The nicest looking set up I have seen, but, would it kill any of these Bluetooth keyboard makers to add a small mouse pad?
$50
Now only if they could price this thing reasonably!!! $99 + tax I think NOT!!! This needs to be around $50 before the average joe like me would ever even consider buying it.

Keyboard 8.4

Has there been any details about the Samsung keyboard for the 8.4? Not much out there but a few images. Wondering if this had become available anywhere that people have experience using.
Not available where I am atm (Indonesia) really like the keyboard and kinda annoyed they release a product and not their accessories at the same time, seems the norm these days though.

Wow thank you so much for posting that video. I'm somewhat sold on the keyboard since it looks actually pretty dope. The layout does seem cramped. Might have to pick one up if it comes in white...

Hopefully it hasn't been cancelled or anything.
Geez! After preparing my reply with links to the available for purchase genuine Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4" keyboard dock / case I found out that I can't post outside links yet. Oh well. Go search Amazon and eBay, there's a UK seller that sells the 8.4" of the keyboard. I'm thinking about getting one myself. Does anyone who owned the 10.5" version ever got into accidentally dropping the tablet because of the way it is docked on it? No lock at all, just propped into it.

The one thing that would stop me buying this keyboard is I want to see how stable the tablet remains if I pick up the keyboard, while the Tab is attached and 'open', to move to another location. I instinctively do this with a laptop and it's inevitable I'll do it with this combo one day without thinking, if the Tab falls off and does a 20,000 refraction's of life shattering performance I'll be gutted.
AT&T sells the keyboard for $99 but only comes in Gray
I got it from AT&T and while the grey doesn't match my bronze tablet, I can live with it. It's a very nice quality. The only issue I'm having is with it regularly disconnecting and reconnecting to the tablet. This ends up causing the last character typed to repeat a lot until the reconnection. I expect I will exchange the keyboard in hopes that it is just a flawed device.

Thank you very much.....
So although there's a 'groove' in the Keyboard for the Tab in reality it's a balancing act and sounds like it can on really be used static on a flat surface?

Yes, I'd say that's correct. I know that I wouldn't try to carry it open for fear of the tablet falling out. I've had similar keyboards for a couple other tablets, so I'm used it it.

Just to let you know I managed to pick one up (specifically for 8.4 to avoid confusion) and after playing with it for a while I would say.....
Although the Tab only 'rests' on the groove it's pretty stable and as long as you don't move suddenly it would be unlikely to fall out.
I'm going to have a think if I can Heath Robinson something to make it more secure.....just a peace of mind thing.
Although the keyboard is small I have large stubby fingers and don't find it a problem to use.
The closed case mode is excellent, what I want/need now is a leather sleeve case that'll hold the two together.....I had a look at the PDAir sleeve for the Ipad Mini which I'm pretty sure would be the right size but they only do it in black or light tan/brown, what I really want is an antique or dark brown to match the bronze.
