[Q] bad screen and camera quality - myTouch 4G General

hi guys,
I'm an android no0b ... soon fix that problem though.
anyway here is my situation and question:
Does the phones with the 'Bad Screen Issue' take the same quality pics as the ones with the Good screen
I love to take pics... my old nokia 3.15mb cellphone take great shot, I simply love cellphone that take great pics... but
I might be getting a used a mytouch4g (rooted still on froyo) [decent enough price (well as decent as living in Jamaica goes) ]
and from the first day that I saw the the phone I commented "oh i thought it would be nicer... the screen looks so bland... washed out"
the owner didnt even realize that it look bland, and said that its just looks that way , it doesnt affect the camera/pic quality.
I played around with it for a few minutes... my first experience with an android device... I AM IN LOVE WITH ANDROID NOW. but I still could not get around how bland the screen showed..
he only had it for a week before and didnt have much experience with android either.. he got it from someone b4 ... and all he knew is that its rooted.
I really like this device, and checked around online and was shocked to find out about the 'BAD SCREEN ISSUE' , and first i say some comments where persons said that they first say it after the rooted their device and a some1 even said that the unrooted their phone and the issue went away..
but that to this forum and youtube and realized that is a real hardware issue literally a 'BAD SCREEN' most like TFT vs a SuperLcd issue. ( right ?)
I still purchase it from him, and i said the the price is pretty sweet...
i know only know two person who own the mytouch/glacier and I asked them to send me a sample of pics that they took with their phone... just to compare camera quality. In fat hey did n't even know about the BAD screen issue (fortunately for them their devices are ok) ...
I took some pics with the one that i would be getting and I must say I am disappointed ... the pic when send to my pc looks just as washed out and bland as on the phone screen. i seriously doubted that the screen would affect the camera quality.. i may be wrong though.
I am not considering not to buy it... just because of the bright/washed out screen... but it not likely that i'm getting another decent Android phone for any where near this price again.
So guys I'm asking
.1) Does the phones with the 'Bad Screen Issue' take the same quality pics as the ones with the Good screen
.2) (if the forum allows it) some of your guys with the 'bad screen" phones upload your pics so i and have a better judgement of the camera quality. Prolly the camers secsors are determined by th e screen output (?)
.3) If u think that think that unrooting/rerooting will help the camera issue ( yeah unlikey )
4) If updated the android build / ginger bread or cm7 or so would improve the camera quality.
thanks in advance.

thanks for the prompt reply...
sadly I can not answer that question, as:
1) I did not check (dont know how to as yet), I am assuming that it at its default setting
2) the phone is not currently in my possession ( prolly not for the next two days) .
once again thanks

The menu button (second hard button from the left) will bring up settings. Check Resolution. I've noticed that pictures in lower light aren't too great. Remember though, its a phone with a camera. The camera is, at most, second.

hope fully I can get my hands on it tomorrow...
I am hoping that the camera can be adjusted to take quality pics...
sad if my old nokia kicks the teeth out a glacier

The LCD panel and the camera picture quality are not related. The good/bad screens basically refer to the two vendors HTC sourced for the MT4G's LCD, with the good one being the Sony S-LCD and the bad one being manufactured by Sharp. The differences between the screens lie in their contrast, color rendering, and off-axis viewing angles. There are some theories that the differences are not actually caused by the screen, but rather by the digitizer, but unless the digitizer was replaced, the screen and digitizer seem to go hand in hand.
The camera on the MT4G simply isn't that good. Unlike the camera for the Amaze, I've never read of an editable image compression setting for the MT4G's camera, so I'm inclined to believe that one doesn't exist.

I had two mytouch.
One good.one bad.
I have to say the cm7 camera from tdj's 12/30/11 cm7 Kang took some great pictures.
I tested every camera option available(alot of basketball/baseball games),and for some reason that Kang was the best as far as cameras.
Should it have been different? I do.t know why! Cant explain it!
Those pictures were crisp and clear.
I sure I posted a pic in that thread to check it for sure.right around new years.
Found the picture.posted it above.
On both phones the camera was super bad.
Thats why thr darkside was the best side.

I was not impressed with the quality of the pictures from the MT4G before it died. The outdoor pictures in daylight still had significant compression artifacts, soft focus, and undersaturation. Not natural saturation. Undersaturation. Blacks weren't black. Indoor pictures with incandescent lighting were just dreadful. Honestly, the picture quality was comparable to my Motorola RAZR2 V9x with an extra three megapixels.

Lol.haha.its a phone.its a 5mp camera.
Not bad for what it is.

Camera ghosting

Greetings folks, a total android noob here, just got my glacier last week, havent really got guts to root it, but been following everything around till I decide to root it.
Im not sure if it's just me, since at least I tried to search and browse around, I didnt see anyone mentioning the ghosting/slow fps on the camera (both picture and video). But I checked on youtube, I found a sample video from Glacier, definetely showing a similar ghosting result, especially on the movement.
I use my camera a lot for taking pictures and video of my 2 kids, kids tend to cannot stay still, and most the picture I took, as long as they stay still it will looks crisp, but if they move, the shutter cannot freeze the movement, those result in blurry pictures.
In video mode, everything is sharp, but when there's movement, it shows really bad ghosting, I think at least my old blackberry bold even though the video quality is bad, but still, doesnt show this kind of ghosting on movement.
I just want to make sure, it's not my camera, and the one I found on youtube, that has defected camera, because I havent see anyone here complaining about it.
But nevertheless, really love my phone, just only if I can take better pictures and video, my life would be complete
I would have to agree for the most part - I've only taken one video (and it was indoors in a bar) and honestly it wasn't too bad for the conditions. However, the camera is extremely slow reaction from the time the button is pushed. If your subject moves in that 1-2 secs you'll end up with a crappy pic, something you didn't expect to get in the shot, or definite ghosting.
I'm not impressed with the camera at all. Loving everything else, so I can live with the sub-par camera, but it's a let down. I came from an iphone 3GS and Vibrant, and both cameras were better (esp the Vibrant's).
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
same here. I can deal with the pictures but video recording is a bit low quality. I'm not expecting for the mt4g to replace my camcorder but at least record without ghosting. my HD2 didn't have a problem at all. hope this can be fix with a driver/app.
I think the camera is a HUGE improvement to my old MyTouch3G, it's a night-&-day difference to me. I love having a flash now for the camera on my phone, very nice. The video could be much better when indoors, as I too have experienced the ghosting effect. But, again that's another improvement to my old MT3G. What is disappointing to me is the front-facing camera, as its quality is quite poor but I don't think it's a 5 MP camera like on the back of the phone.
The FFC is only a VGA resolution (640x480 or 480x640) resolution.

It's certainly an improvement over the MT3G, but that's also a big step back in technology used in phones (at least on Tmob) compared to those out today from Tmob and other carriers. I don't think you can compare a current release phone to one released a year or two ago as the newer one sure as hell should be vastly improved. With the great overall build quality and HW specs of the MT4G, it's just disappointing that the camera/video is sub-par (IMO) to some competition.
I much prefer the MT4G over the Vibrant I switched from, but two things I miss most on the Vibrant are the camera/video (even though it lacked LED flash) and speaker/multimedia support.
As I said, I'll live with it for all the other +s the MT4G offers. I've never been one to rely on my phone for camera/video anyway.
I hope it's just something that would be easily fixed by a driver or firmware update, it's a disappointment, but not enough to make me ditch this awesome phone.

Yeah, the pictures i've taken have been slightly grainy and lacking in sharpness. I haven't taken a video yet, but the samples i've seen aren't that great.
Does the quality improve using vignette or another camera app?

i'd like to know also.

Why did they choose a 0.3mp ff camera??

Wasn't that a bit silly??
If the SGS2 could pull off a 2MP front camera, HTC should have at least thrown in a 1.3...
To make things worse, the quality of the front camera is terrible and totally pixelated. At least I can use the rear camera for Skype...
Because their cheap @$$ idiots. Hence, the crappy snapdragon piece of crap processor.
BTW, I use the Sensation at the moment and let me tell you, I sure can't wait to get a hold of the Galaxy S II soon.

You've been flaming here on several other topics too. If you don't like the phone keep it to yourself and stop spamming about how much better the SGS2 is! Especially since you personally don't even have the S2 yet! Geez!
I have noticed that there is no one perfect phone. One has something better than the other. I bet this is done as a marketing plan. If you drop eveything into one device, then no one will buy any other. If you look at the past year of devices, one had a better processor than the other, but then the other had a better battery, and so on.
If you have a better explanation, then be my guest...Denial won't get you anywhere. The FFC on the Sensation is dirt. Period.
Oh wait, or would you rather hear...the FFC on the Sensation is absolutely gorgeous! The pixelation and poor quality is superb. .3 whooping super clear high definition camera. The best on the market.
One doesn't have to own a SGSII to know that the phone is much superior than the sensation. Comparing the two is a joke. The Sensations FFC camera is a joke.
It's not to say that I don't like the phone, heck I own one and use it as my primary next to my LG G2X (secondary). But there's a reason the SGSII sold 3Million units in 55 days....

now, I'm not much on replying to flame bait comments but... seriously?
how would you know one phone is better then the other without even atleast taking it for a test spin?
your logic makes no sense. (pun/no pun? )
And the complaints roll in. If u want a gorgeous ffc than go pay $700-800 for a phone. Most people don't even use it anyway to be honest. And I done owned every Nokia flagship with great ffc(the e7 being my last) When I had one I barely used it. I find myself using it more since Skype updated its app for android. Next your gonna want a flash on the ffc. If u don't like the phone take it back. Clearly u didn't do research before buying it or extending your contract. I think the clarity is fine. Most ffc are .3 to 1.3 and than its diff but that's based on laptops and webcams...if u want a 2.0 camera go drop the extra $200 than your gonna make a thread complaining about TouchWiz like the rest of the world. I think the Sensation is a solid device. A few hiccups but I'm sure it will be fixed with a software update or custom rom.

Why bother having a better front facing camera? So that the 5 times you use the video chat feature you'll look slightly better?
Come on, even if you were even an 8MP front facing camera, the software would scale it down before sending over 3G
I think VGA is enough..I rarely used it.I am not a girl, i don't like to take photos of myself..

I suffer from butterfingers syndrom and since the GS2 is made of plastic then I don't want a Samsung.
I have nagging feeling that HTC properly is gonna release a LTE enabled HTC Sensation with a frontfacing 1.3 og 2.0 Megapixel camera. Maybe next year.
And I the only who has that feeling?
It isn't a good camera, but it isn't bad in well-lit areas. The resolution doesn't make a difference on video calls though (primary reason for FFC) because all phones with FFCs can only capture VGA video (to my knowledge).

people really use the ffc that much? Its fine for video chat, it is what it is.
People say htc is cheap but i really doubt a 2mb camera costs that much more than the one they put in there.

Plastic is far more resistant to denting and gashes... my Galaxy S Vibrant is way more durable than my Sensation 4G. if I drop the Sensation I'm worried about the metal frame bending or denting or leaving huge terrible gashes in the finish.
The FFC is garbage.
HTC's cameras are still poor folks. The Sensation 4G does pale in comparison to the Galaxy S 4G when it comes to still quality and obviously the FFC. The only area the Sensation excels is in video audio recording.
well, one thing nice about the Sensation unibody is that if you dent it, scratch it, mar it in any way, you can just get a new one and you'd virtually have a new phone.
can't do that with the Samsung.
front VGA camera is fine for video chat. just don't do it in a dark place.
back camera takes good pics. these aren't DSLRs, it's a freaking phone camera.
you want the best still picture possible? get a Leica...

Huh? Based on today's pricing and your logic the O2X should be a best seller and the SGS2 sitting on the shelves. It's pretty much the opposite.
HTC Sensation
£375.00 (£450.00)
Samsung Galaxy S II i9100 (16GB)
£399.00 (£478.80)
LG Optimus 2X
£320.00 (£384.00)
Motorola ATRIX
£370.00 (£444.00)

Colors from camera are horrible.

The colors are far too over saturated. The resulting photos are not at all accurate. I tried changing white balance, but they problem stayed. Is there some other setting? Is this problem software specific... in other words would a different ROM maybe fix it?

Yes, could that be the problem? I thought everyone looks at digital photos on PCs. FWIW the color problem persists on various PCs and on the phone itself.
To be honest, I think your photo proves the OP's point. I'm not saying it doesn't look great - it does; however, the colours are way over-saturated, meaning that while it looks nice, it does not look like a real or accurate represenation of the subject.

But unless that plant in the foreground is plugged into an outlet, there's no way that color can be accurate. Does it not look outrageously bright green to you?

Exactly. It looks "nice"... but the colors are way too intense.
Has anyone using a non-stock ROM noticed a difference?
Here's an example. The couch in this picture is a rather subdued maroon color. It does not glow like this in real life.
Yup. I just took a pic to confirm and its very noticeable. This is a big issue.
I find that if you into into the image adjustments and lower the saturation by 1, the colors are more accurate and natural. The photos are from my school and i think that just lowering the saturation it looks more natural
Looks like that does it, nice tip mate.

LOL indeed.
I'm comparing the photos from this to the photos of previous smart phones, like the Nexus One, G2 and several Samsung phones I've owned. All of these took better pictures with more accurate colors. The One S does have some nice features, like HDR and Low Light mode, but if the colors are all wrong, then it doesn't matter.
But it seems this may be lost on you. You're clearly struggling to understand the term 'smart phone'. My suspicion is that you, having little experience with the first half of the term have chosen to ignore it, and this is what has lead you to believe that a smart phone is 'just a damn phone.'
Relax man! Don't get so wound up! It's not the end of the world!

Actually, it's quite the opposite. I am very much aware about the 'smart' bit in 'smartphone' but I just think that no matter how you put it the camera on a 'smartphone' can never be included in the 'smart' bit.
You see, I am actually very much into photography and I do care quite a bit about the photo quality and that is why a phone no matter how 'smart' it is will never cut it for me - the quality is simply not there from the very start. There is no way to get the same quality from the tiny sensor and lens in a 'smart' phone as you would get from an SLR, even one with a 1.6 crop factor, and a proper set of lens.
So basically if you want your photos to look good then don't take them with a phone! While if you just want to point and shoot when you're out with your friends then I don't think the colour accuracy is that much of a big deal - you can always retouch them in Photoshop if you care that much. At the end of the day in a point and shoot situation you probably want to capture the moment and not so much to take an artistic photo.
I may well be wrong since the camera function on my 'smart' phone is one of the things I use the least. In my case, when I want to take good photos I make sure I have my SLR with me - I'd never leave it to the camera on my phone. That is not to say that the phone is not actually very smart indeed, don't get me wrong, it's just that I use all the other functions a hell of a lot more and I think that's what makes it really smart, not the silly camera...

I totally agree man! That's what I did! Mind you, I'm not a Nikon fan though, I like my Canon 550D a lot more!
You guys are totally missing the point. Photography is also a hobby of mine (I happen to be a Nikon fan) but that does not mean I can't expect that my new phone take pictures at least as good as a phone from FIVE years ago.
If the phone's calculator added one and one and came up with thirty three, would you tell me it's not a problem, and that I shouldn't be using a phone for a calculator?
What happened to this thread--
I will agree if the photos are VERY important, a phone may not be the way to go or take some photos before buying
On the other hand no need to lambast anyone
For this old man--I can only hope if someone takes a pic of me with my phone, it enhances me as well as it does the other photos it takes--

Shocked at photo quality

OK so im coming from a long line of iPhones and after getting bored of iOS this is my first venture into Samsung. I took this photo at the club I work at last night and seriously, what is going on here? The flash pics were pretty crap too, finding it very hard to focus after pressing the shutter.
p.s yes i know how to take good photos normally and no there isnt any plastic over the lens.

Even that image is better than any iPhone I've seen, personally I've not had any problems with the camera although there are a few different types of modes that you can use while on the camera have you tried playing with them?

Sure, tried every mode available! Let me upload a similar iPhone 5 pic, hold on.
I also noticed the pictures weren't what I expected.
They tend to blur quite easily.
I'm hoping a software update will sort it.
It's a 13MP camera, you're either doing something wrong or your camera is bad.

I haven't used the camera too much but if there is any focus problems I'm guessing they can fix it that way.

Definitely not doing something wrong lol, you can clearly see its actually a good picture in terms of light pickup its the smearing like an oil painting and thats nothing to do with the megapixels either
I agree with the poster, ive had many phones and by far the note 3 has the worst photo quality ever, im really dissapointed for a ~750 euro device to have such a bad camera. 13MP looks nice in the specs but numbers is not everything.
To me it looks like there is some kind compression on the image, maybe the firmware has some kind of compression method to keep the camera up to speed for zero shutter lag.
Hope samsung will look into this and give us an update in the camera firmware.
Thats weird.

Yes you are right, the bright and especialy daylight pictures are pretty nice, but when things get dark or far away they smudge out. You can see it happen in the bottom 2 pictures in that post, the last 2 are obviously lower quality than the flowers for example.

thanks for the link
What do you expect? The camera has a 1/3" sensor, a FX SLR has ~28 times the sensor area. This means that you would need 28 times the light (or time) to shoot a photo with same quality.
This is not possible because in the conditions where your photo was shot you would need a tripod and long exposure (which is not useable on moving objects) to make a photo which has comparable quality like an outdoor picture!
Anyhow, I have the N3 for one day now and I am happy with it so far, especially with the better camera!

Well it does have to do with the megapixels because the more you have the less the typical blur will be visibly apparent as a result of movement, which seems to be the case here, whether that be movement by you or the subject.

It isnt blur, it's the denoise that samsung is using. This is a software issue, among other things obviously. Whether or not they fix it I have no idea.

Until manufacturers either quit trying to outdo each other with more megapixels on the same size sensor, lower the megapixels on the same size sensor (like HTC did with the One), or increase the sensor size (such as Apple just did with the 5s), low light photos are going to have more and more noise. The smaller the pixel, the less light it captures, which results in worse low light performance.
Here is the metadata for anyone interested .. It seems like the camera shot the picture in night mode

Washed out viewing angle

Can all of you people with "perfect" displays and viewing angles post picture of your device at an angle if you were look at it from a table and other angles.
I DON'T CARE IF YOU LOOK AT IT FROM THE FRONT and say "oh well I look it from the front all the time." I view my device on the table 1/4 time. So this is an issue. Don't get me wrong I love this device.
MINE IS BAD. I know there are threads similar like this but you people NEVER back up your claim of it being perfect and saying "I don't have that issue."

WELL PLEASE POST PICTURES OF A LOT OF ANGLES! PLEASE AS PROOF!
I'm trying to investigate this issue because I'm reading the display on this device is the BEST DISPLAY EVER. I don't believe this is true at all. MKBHD has this issue too. I add this device for a week and I know I have only 15 days before it's too late to get a new one and not a "refurbished" one.

If you perceive it as an issue you might want to go with the next badass $350 off contract device available... This is something that is mentioned in almost EVERY review video I've seen, but I don't read my screen from an angle and don't see it as an "issue".
good day.

I've only seen two videos point this out and I hoped it would be a defect. All the others out said this display is "perfect" and so on etc.
I want to see the pictures from the people who claim the "perfect" display and says "I dont have that when I look at mine from an angle."
Cuz I've seen plenty who claims that in just one thread involving this issue. Yeah it's a low priced device, but we all know Google doesn't really make money off this device at all, it's the services your using and the ads you see when your using it that pays them back.
I just want to see the pictures of those who claims their device is perfect.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Reviewers may test extreme viewing angles for comparison but generally evaluate the quality when viewing the display head-on in the manner most people view the device while it's held in normal use. Mind's perfect, but I could not very well use it if held at a 90° angle.
My viewing angles are nothing like that. I have no trouble seeing my screen from those angles.I know you are looking for pictures but unfortunately m n5 is my only camera right now. If i can get some pics I'll post them.
Mine ain't perfect but they seem much better than yours. At least with my eyes, maybe your camera make the things worst ?
I don't have any camera either, but seriously I can see the tiles much better than you, even with extreme angles.

Galaxy Nexus. Yah i know blah blah blah blah saturated. I deal with a HTC ONE too. I actually ENJOY the display on the ONE more then my Galaxy Nexus. THAT display is GORGEOUS! I wish I could just tear it off and use the ONE's display instead lol. Or at least get the viewing angle it gets.

Heh, I wanna say galaxy nexus. Which I also came from as well. Galaxy nexus amoled panel blows chunks next to the n5.
On topic: Since you forced me to sorta care, I got to lookin at the angles. When I got directly up/down/left/right it performs as well as an ips display should with solid color at extreme angles. But on the diagonals of the extremes i.e. (Right/down) I noticed that's when the back light washout would be visible. I suspect it has something to do with any type of polarization that has been applied to the glass.
good day.

agreed.
Have you ever noticed how every review tests viewing angles from a straight angle? That's the standard and probably for good reason.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Mine wishes out when I look at it diagonally and off-axis. There's only minimal washing out from the top, bottom, and sides, unlike what you're seeing. I'll try to track down a another camera and take a couple photos to show you.
EDIT: Here you go. As you can see, there's some washing out at extreme angles (mostly from the diagonal), but it's nowhere near as bad as you're experiencing.

Which is why it's bad for viewing on tables like I said. Because your viewing it from diagonal perspective a bit. Left and right and up and down are Barrable. It's not TOOO bad. Of the diagonals were the same I'd be OK with this.
I wanna know if this is a Screen lottery (every device has this but some worst then others), which is why I requested pictures from the "perfect" people. If I see that they are having even a significantly better display compared to mine(I know IPS displays get washed out at angles but mine is HORRIBLE), then I wanna call Google and get a new one and compare those too.
I've yet to be able to compare my Nexus 5 to another. Probably tomorrow I'll go into a T-Mobile or Sprint retailer and compare (hopefully it isn't bright in the room because it's harder to tell the difference).

Maxpower7 thanks! I appreciate those pictures. Is that maxed out brightness on a stock kernel with stock colors? That's what I'm using ATM(For personal reasons hopefully I can announce it when it's done.)

Stock kernel, no color adjustments. I've never used max brightness on any device. I'm at roughly 1/3 brightness and it's still plenty bright for me. I can try another one at max brightness if you want, but I don't keep it that high personally because it's too bright for my eyes and it also kills the battery.
EDIT: here's max brightness.
No Maxy it's fine thanks. I just wanted to know for sure.

Someone at LG needs to be FIRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEDA.
Can this "issue" be fixed? Can the angles be improved? I remember reading the Nexus⁴ got some AOSPA Love and it got "fixed" not sure if it was color wise or angle wise or both since I don't own one.

Mine gets quite washed out an angle, but I can still read everything on the screen just fine so it really doesn't bother me. It's a little annoying and unfortunate just to know it's like this (especially since my N7 2013's IPS screen is absolutely perfect even at the most extreme angles), but it really has no effect on my usage of the device.
Seems extreme to wish for someone to lose their job over this. If this is affecting you enough to feel that strongly about it, perhaps a different device would serve you better.

My point in posting those photos was to show that it's really not that bad at all, and it actually looks worse in the photos that it does in person. To suggest that someone should lose their livelihood over this non-issue is utterly ridiculous because this screen on this phone is pretty awesome. And I'm picky about displays.
