Greetings folks, a total android noob here, just got my glacier last week, havent really got guts to root it, but been following everything around till I decide to root it.
Im not sure if it's just me, since at least I tried to search and browse around, I didnt see anyone mentioning the ghosting/slow fps on the camera (both picture and video). But I checked on youtube, I found a sample video from Glacier, definetely showing a similar ghosting result, especially on the movement.
I use my camera a lot for taking pictures and video of my 2 kids, kids tend to cannot stay still, and most the picture I took, as long as they stay still it will looks crisp, but if they move, the shutter cannot freeze the movement, those result in blurry pictures.
In video mode, everything is sharp, but when there's movement, it shows really bad ghosting, I think at least my old blackberry bold even though the video quality is bad, but still, doesnt show this kind of ghosting on movement.
I just want to make sure, it's not my camera, and the one I found on youtube, that has defected camera, because I havent see anyone here complaining about it.
But nevertheless, really love my phone, just only if I can take better pictures and video, my life would be complete
I would have to agree for the most part - I've only taken one video (and it was indoors in a bar) and honestly it wasn't too bad for the conditions. However, the camera is extremely slow reaction from the time the button is pushed. If your subject moves in that 1-2 secs you'll end up with a crappy pic, something you didn't expect to get in the shot, or definite ghosting.
I'm not impressed with the camera at all. Loving everything else, so I can live with the sub-par camera, but it's a let down. I came from an iphone 3GS and Vibrant, and both cameras were better (esp the Vibrant's).

same here. I can deal with the pictures but video recording is a bit low quality. I'm not expecting for the mt4g to replace my camcorder but at least record without ghosting. my HD2 didn't have a problem at all. hope this can be fix with a driver/app.
I think the camera is a HUGE improvement to my old MyTouch3G, it's a night-&-day difference to me. I love having a flash now for the camera on my phone, very nice. The video could be much better when indoors, as I too have experienced the ghosting effect. But, again that's another improvement to my old MT3G. What is disappointing to me is the front-facing camera, as its quality is quite poor but I don't think it's a 5 MP camera like on the back of the phone.
The FFC is only a VGA resolution (640x480 or 480x640) resolution.

It's certainly an improvement over the MT3G, but that's also a big step back in technology used in phones (at least on Tmob) compared to those out today from Tmob and other carriers. I don't think you can compare a current release phone to one released a year or two ago as the newer one sure as hell should be vastly improved. With the great overall build quality and HW specs of the MT4G, it's just disappointing that the camera/video is sub-par (IMO) to some competition.
I much prefer the MT4G over the Vibrant I switched from, but two things I miss most on the Vibrant are the camera/video (even though it lacked LED flash) and speaker/multimedia support.
As I said, I'll live with it for all the other +s the MT4G offers. I've never been one to rely on my phone for camera/video anyway.
I hope it's just something that would be easily fixed by a driver or firmware update, it's a disappointment, but not enough to make me ditch this awesome phone.

Yeah, the pictures i've taken have been slightly grainy and lacking in sharpness. I haven't taken a video yet, but the samples i've seen aren't that great.
Does the quality improve using vignette or another camera app?

Hey all,
It seems that both the iphone 4 and the captivate have a 5mp camera. However, there are 2 Huge differences that i have noticed.
1st. The gallery on the iphone allows you to double tap a photo to zoom in, but it also refocuses the image turning it incredibly clear. The captivate allows the double taping, but it does not refocus the image
2nd. The iphone 4 camera appears to be much sharper than my captivate, edges seem smoother and overall quality seems much clearer. The captivate seems like it has a white distortion to it.
I was wondering if anyone else has noticed this. I love the captivate but i'm on a "vacation" with the parents and i keep switching to iphone because of its amazing camera quality. Maybe there are settings that i'm not inputting, or maybe another app i should try?
Camera Settings on captivate:
Focus Mode: Auto focus
Timer: Off
Resolution: 2560x 1920
White balance: Auto
Effects: Normal
ISO: Auto
Metering: Centre-weighted
Image Quality: Superfine
1st. the gallery as in gallery of photos already taken? because it is impossible to refocus a picture you have already taken. although the captivate if you tap the screen while your taking a picture it will focus on that area for you
2nd. could be, never compared them myself
He means when you zoom in abd its blurred, the iphone fixes it.
The iPhone 4 has got the captivate beat in terms of camera quality. I think even the 3G (not even 3GS) is better than the captivate. I seldom take pictures as do the majority of people I assume. Its not really too important as long as it takes decently clear pictures. No phone can really take the place of a cheap point and shoot camera yet (and I mean current popular phones, not those weird cameras with phones built in.)
The camera quality is definitely somewhat of a bummer even though its acceptable. The worst part is that the camera has a large red blotch in the center if its in anything less than optimal lighting. It can only really be seen when pointing at a white wall though.
Yeah this phone is only good for its small size, screen, processor, and video chip. Everything else it does courtesy of Google. Samsung could very well have produced the perfect phone if they spent as much time as apple did, but I would say the Epic 4G is pretty close.
I disagree.
IPhone 4 > Captivate > 3GS > 3G
But almost any decent point and shoot is far better than any of them.

Hey,
Thanks soo much for the quick replies. I've come to learn that the camera on the captivate is very tempramental, sometimes the shots look incredible and others it can be pretty horrific. Sunset photos are much much better on the captivate than on the iphone which is a nice plus.
Another question i have that sort of pretains to this topic is about the gallery itself. If you take photos with the camera and save them to the phone they show up in gallery with the most recent photos in front. If you use the camera and take photos but save them to the SD card, they show up with the most recent photos in the back. Is there anyway to fix that?
P.S. I just recently learned (and accomplished) flashing the JH2 rom to my device!! i'm stoked
Thanks again

I'm almost inclined to agree, some videos do come out amazing on the captivate and others not so much. But at least with videos there is a close comparison, the photos are no where near eachother though
The iPhone has an amazing camera, honestly, I'm not to disappointed in losing to it, I new it probably would going into it. To me lower quality camera is far out weighed by the higher quality OS.
I've also noticed that a lot of Captivate video seems better than iP4 video. Aside from a sharper, lesser noise picture, the iPhone seems to exibit some jellyfishing where the Captivate does not.
I don't know about you guys, but I LOVE the captivate's camera. Definitely a step up from my old bold 9700s. Here is a picture I took in the rain b&w to make it dramatic lol:

iphone4 has hands down the best mobile phone camera. It takes the best videos and photos easily surpass any other phone. It has to do with their "backlit" sensor. Each pixel on their sensor collects more light than on any phone sensor. There's no two ways about it.
Captivates videos can be good depending on lighting conditions. I wish that had a setting for wind mic however. Not useful if the video is on a boat or in a car.
GSMarena did a very good comparison of the two phones, click next page until your at 'camera comparison'. They gave the galaxy s a better score actually.

GSMArena's review is unprofessional at best. Seriously, it's awfully bad.
The iPhone 4's camera is the best camera on a mobile phone at this time, period; but it does have it's issues.
White balance is auto only and not very good; and many indoor shots, depending on lighting, come far too yellowish.
Compared to the SGS, it has a wider focal range. This is well and good for "panoramic" shots, but it has a smaller macro range (meaning you have to stand further back from small objects to focus on them). This is not really an issue, but mostly a design decision.
As the GSM Arena review states, the metering is fixed in "matrix" mode, which means that unless you manually tap to correctly expose the area you want, it won't always be accurate by default and will be very sensible to change depending on what enters the frame.
Video on the iPhone is leaps and bounds better than video on the SGS, which is soft and lacks bitrate. It also has tap to focus on video which the SGS lacks (why, samsung?). Not to say the SGS's video is crap, but it could be a lot better.
On the other hand, the SGS has a lot of different options for the camera, which makes up for the slightly worse image quality (mostly due to crappier sensor and aggressive software noise reduction). So in the end, you have to decide whether you want a better sensor or more settings to tweak
I have no idea how GSM Arena came to the conclusion that the SGS camera was better. I'ts mind boggling.
As for the flash, to me it's only useful as a flashlight.
I'm happy to see that i'm not just screwing something up on my phone. I've been in a huge switch and swap routine these past few weeks going from iphone to captivate and back. While i wish there was someway to improve the camera quality on the captivate i think i've come to live with it. At least the videos are comparable.
Sorry, iPhone 4 does not have the best camera. Check Nokia and even Xperia X10.

nokias camera are soooo far ahead of the ip4 camera..
I find it amazing that cellphones these days pack so many features into a small package. 5MP Camera, HD Video recording, beautiful and large LCD screens? Who still remembers beepers/pagers? hahahaha
Anyways I'm sure the iPhone 4 camera is a little better but the Captivates HD video comes out nicely. I think it has to do with Samsung having the ability to make Digital Cameras.
hello people,
Is it me or is the 1080p filming pretty bad on the lg optimus 3d ? i checked out other peoples video samples on youtube but i have to say that the quality is pretty bad especially if you compare it to galaxy s2 and even the Optimus 2x ??
i love filming in 3D but i also kinda hoped/expected that filming in 2D 1080P would be really good aswell but i have to say im a bit disappointed.
I also read somewhere that recording in 720P was better then 1080P ? i havent tested it myself yet but i will soon but that would be kinda strange wouldnt it ?
Never filmed or done any photos in 2D on this phone and can't ever see myself doing that. I have broadcast quality camera's for that, I bought a 3D phone for 3D (and a new 3DTV at the weekend to watch the stuff on!)
1080p should use a much higher bitrate than 720p, maybe that's the reason?

maybe... ill check it out because i understand that camera's are always better but if i look at video samples from phones like optimus 2x and galaxy s2 its a lot better...
Have you updated to the 8th July firmware?
I too felt the 1080p looked like utter crap on my original June firmware. I JUST updated today to the newer firmware and 1080p is decent now.
Its still likely short of those other phones you mention, but that is somewhat understandable as having to squeeze two cameras instead of one probably meant they had to use slightly smaller sensors.
Sadly photo quality does not seem to have improved and looks just as bad as video quality did on the original firmware. Hopefully that too will get fixed soon as right now video quality is actually better than photo quality, clearly a bug.
That's because of the bitrate. Optimus 2x has a can mod that raises the bitrate to 19mbs, which looks awesome. We just need devs on our phone to do the same.

I had a 2X when they first came out and the 1080p recording was a joke, really low bit rate and it didn't even have auto focus but they soon put that right, give it time and am sure they will get the bit rate up.
I have to admit to not recording any 2D videos I did a few tests when I first had it but all mine are 3D now, it looks so much better than flat video on a screen.

I'm currently looking into this and I've come to the conclusion that -
It's obviously not as good as the Galaxy S II, but it's a bit better than the HTC Desire.
It's not going to be up to the iPhone 4 5MP standard either, unfortunately.
I think the quality of 2d pics are excellent,i have no problems with them.

They seem fairly good, but up against some other smartphones they are quite poor. It's not really a surprise.
Depending on the lens used, a 5mp can give a better result than 8mp or just as good, but that's down to hardware used.
I asked someone who experienced both, so thanks for the info.
Here is a low light comparison to show what I mean:

Granted, part of why the N900 version looks better is its in perfect focus due to having a half-shutter to focus option. But no matter what you try, the O3D takes softer, uglier pictures.
I think its 99% a software issue with the Optimus 3D because 1080p video quality went straight from utter crap to excellent with a single firmware update.
The bitrate still is lower than I would like, but that is easily solved with a third-party app. (I say that, but the app I was using is broken on V10d, hmmm)
Its clearly firmware or driver level as the third-party app did not improve the quality no matter what bitrate I chose on firmware V10b.
Hopefully photo quality will get tweaked too at some point.
I'm new, go easy
Ok, so at the moment I am torn between the SGSII and the Sensation. The issues I have with the Sensation are:
- comparatively poor camera/video recording performance and quality
- wind noise when recording a video
- poor layout of 'videos' section
The SGSII doesn't suffer from these issues, but the design isn't as nice and I prefer Sense, also there's no comma on the keyboard.
With HTC releasing the full kernel for the Sensation, is it possible that the issues I mentioned above will be fixable?
Cheers,
James
if you look around more, there is a mod on the dev section that gives you better quality with tge camera, but i gotta say Sensations camera is already pretty good.

1- I haven't had any problems with the camera, you should check out the "post photos taken with your sensation thread", and remember it's a phone, so there's no way the quality will match that of an actual Camera.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1131274
2- Are you recording videos in a particularly windy area? (it's a stupid question, but for basic elimination methods i have to ask it)
3- I kind of agree with this. I don't like how they combined videos and gallery into one app. The only thing i can suggest is to get another video app. Personally i use "MoboPlayer" , or if you want something that looks more in place try getting the apk of the "Video Market" from somewhere.
Thank-you all for the replies.
I appreciate it is a phone, however seeing side by side comparisons of both video and picture, the HTC seems quite poor in comparison to the Samsung - it's one of those niggles that just bugs me.
As for the wind issue, I cant speak first hand about it, but from a recording I saw of a London street, it seemed only to have a mild breeze - yet it sounded like a force 10 gale. Whilst I don't record videos all that much, it is something that would bug me if I ever chose to..
Finally regarding the video section, I will take a look at the alternatives and also look for that apk
Cheers,
James

Diceplayer is also very good.
Confused
With regards to the OP, I have had no issues whatsoever with the camera video quality, the location of the microphone does make it susceptible to "wind noise" plus there's no active noise cancellation. This can be combatted by how you hold the phone while recording and I have little issue. I have attached a video I took a couple of weeks ago from the Ace Cafe in London just before a Thunderstorm. You do hear some wind which is to be expected but overall what I wanted to capture was.
I'm slightly confused though by the title of this thread about future capabilities of the sensation and then your initial post? I don't see how they're linked...?
I'm new on here too, dont worry, flamers are getting few and far between thanks to Operation Ironfist
EDIT: Turns out the video was wayyyy to big to be put on here realistically because I shot in 1080p, sorry
EDIT EDIT: I didn't see about the possibility of kernel fixes you mentioned. Just not with it today
- comparatively poor camera/video recording performance and quality
- wind noise when recording a video
- poor layout of 'videos' section
Of those, the first issue is to do with data bitrate and can be fixed using the cameramod (This really makes a HUGE difference I've found, albeit makes recorded vids rather large), the second issue is a design flaw though noise cancellation may fix that (No idea if thats doable at a software level/kernel) and the third, like the others have said can be fixed with a change of vid app.
I'll shush now before I embarrass myself more
- comparatively poor camera/video recording performance and quality theres mods for that now they work alot better.
- wind noise when recording a video suprisingly my tpu case solved that for me. noticed it a little bit but i dont do that much outdoor recording. the case added a little more space between the mic and wind so it works out, weird i kno
- poor layout of 'videos' section theres an app for that
it seems to be the same. what you've seen side by side is not the real thing, you should record from both phones and play it on pc or something. that way, you can eliminate differences of screen. as sgs2 gives a much better display I can say (but id rather prefer my sensations display ) thats if your really looking on the quality of camera for both devices.
Nevermind the camera....
Have you seen how poor Touchwiz is?
I had the SG2 for about 2 days and it made it's way to ebay....
The video camera was the ONLY decent thing about that phone....
EXTREMELY POOR!
Camera on the Sensation is sweet. Video isn't as good, I have had my share of stuttering video. But overall, amazing.
For the keyboard not having a coma, just download another keyboard for your Galaxy II.

Thankyou all for getting back to me. I was looking at a case anyway as it happens, so we shall see.
Regarding the camera mod, does that fix just video camera quality or still image quality also?
I also read that the issue with the poor audio when recording video is that the gain is set too high and you cant change it - can this been corrected easily through modding?
Sorry to seem nitpicky, I'm just really quite torn haha

Phonearena did a blind test for still camera performance. They pitted Iphone4, Sensation and SGS2 against a point-n-shooter (I think it was a Canon).
Result was (mind you, it was a blind test so nobody knew which pic was from which source):
Canon > Sensation > Iphone4 > SGS2!!!
It was really unbelievable. More people liked Sensation camera pictures than SGS2.
They are again doing another blind test there, this time between 4 cameraphone cameras (I guess maybe Nokia or SE Arc is also there). Also this time they have disclosed in advance the actual Canon shots. People are asked to rate only the cameraphone pics. lets see what the results turn out to be.
I am specifically talking about the still picture camera.
When I compare the nexus S with other phones using the gsmarena photo comparison tool, it actually seems like one of the best 5MP camera around and gsmarena says "good 5MP snapper" and they say it's noticeably better than galaxy S.
On this forum(and the rest of xda) on the other hand I have seen many people say that the camera is mediocre. I want to know what do they mean by that? I understand since it's only 5MP you can forget about widescreen photography but how is it as far as image quality is concerned?
Do these people mean mediocre compared to something like galaxy S2 or you think it just doesnt cut it for a reasonably good daily snapper?
I have used galaxy S camera and I found it satisfying minus the lack of LED flash. Will I be satisfied with nexus S camera?

Will I be satisfied with nexus S camera?

i LOVE my nexus s camera!
i think the people that rate it mediocre either dont know how to use it or take photos with a smudged up lens cover.

seconded. I like the camera a lot
The camera is awesome! we should rate it with objective perspextive. Meaning, do we take shoot with low light? Any camera will not get maximum rrsult out of it.

+1, I found it had better stills than my old Galaxy S. I compared it to an iPhone 4, and it seems to be quite a bit better for point and shoot scenarios.
Ya it really does look good in the gsmarena tool and the photos on flickr for the nexus S. Most people complaining about it must be the ones who think "the more megapixels the better" which is so wrong.
It wins and life and is a bawse. That is all on the Nexus S camera.
. It really is AMAZING though. The quality is outstanding
Nexus S (GSM i9020a)
CyberGR Hybrid ICS (v6)
Eugene's Kernel (Speedy-7)
OC 1100/100 (ondemandx)
It's good, but my pictures would come out better on my old Epic.
Still a great camera though.
As the others have said, definitely a solid camera in comparison to many phones. Megapixels don't stand up to a good lens and sensor.
I'm afraid the people who rate the camera mediocre is because of lack zoom that is instead absolutely useless and destructive. I'm really happy about the camera and sometimes pictures are better of the digital compact camera (Panasonic, 4 years old) my wife uses.
IMHO, its good for indoors but not THAT impressive for outdoors, dont exactly know, i also went for a comparison between the pics taken running CM7 & stock ics. i went to a conclusion that cm7 camera pics were far better than ics(dont exactly know the reason).
maybe the focused-preview and the camera shutter are not calibrated?
anyways..i will rate it 8/10.
I think the camera is great, especially with ICS.
tapa tapa tapa
I just got a nexus s 4g I have an epic 4g touch and the picture quality is good on the ns4g not as good as the e4gt but its really close I like it.

I had galaxy s before nexus, and I think on galaxy camera is much better for outdors, for indors i found that they both suck.

IMO, when taking still pictures, Nexus S' camera is on par with iPhone 4's.
However, based on what I observed, iPhone 4's camera shots brighter pictures than Nexus S'. But still I think Nexus S is one of the best 5-megapixels shooter.
A picture is worth ... well you know the rest.

I find it really goog for a phone camera.
Picture with flash are sometimes too white for me.
It is obviously not as good as SGS2 & iphone 4s, but still fine for daily pictures n videos. No complain at all!
I have never found a phone camera that takes as good pictures as a cheap, decent digital camera, though SGS2 comes close. For outdoor/long shots, the NS is acceptable, but with closer objects the noise is really noticeable.
I used to have a Nokia N95 and I think it had better camera than NS.
hi guys,
I'm an android no0b ... soon fix that problem though.
anyway here is my situation and question:
Does the phones with the 'Bad Screen Issue' take the same quality pics as the ones with the Good screen
I love to take pics... my old nokia 3.15mb cellphone take great shot, I simply love cellphone that take great pics... but
I might be getting a used a mytouch4g (rooted still on froyo) [decent enough price (well as decent as living in Jamaica goes) ]
and from the first day that I saw the the phone I commented "oh i thought it would be nicer... the screen looks so bland... washed out"
the owner didnt even realize that it look bland, and said that its just looks that way , it doesnt affect the camera/pic quality.
I played around with it for a few minutes... my first experience with an android device... I AM IN LOVE WITH ANDROID NOW. but I still could not get around how bland the screen showed..
he only had it for a week before and didnt have much experience with android either.. he got it from someone b4 ... and all he knew is that its rooted.
I really like this device, and checked around online and was shocked to find out about the 'BAD SCREEN ISSUE' , and first i say some comments where persons said that they first say it after the rooted their device and a some1 even said that the unrooted their phone and the issue went away..
but that to this forum and youtube and realized that is a real hardware issue literally a 'BAD SCREEN' most like TFT vs a SuperLcd issue. ( right ?)
I still purchase it from him, and i said the the price is pretty sweet...
i know only know two person who own the mytouch/glacier and I asked them to send me a sample of pics that they took with their phone... just to compare camera quality. In fat hey did n't even know about the BAD screen issue (fortunately for them their devices are ok) ...
I took some pics with the one that i would be getting and I must say I am disappointed ... the pic when send to my pc looks just as washed out and bland as on the phone screen. i seriously doubted that the screen would affect the camera quality.. i may be wrong though.
I am not considering not to buy it... just because of the bright/washed out screen... but it not likely that i'm getting another decent Android phone for any where near this price again.
So guys I'm asking
.1) Does the phones with the 'Bad Screen Issue' take the same quality pics as the ones with the Good screen
.2) (if the forum allows it) some of your guys with the 'bad screen" phones upload your pics so i and have a better judgement of the camera quality. Prolly the camers secsors are determined by th e screen output (?)
.3) If u think that think that unrooting/rerooting will help the camera issue ( yeah unlikey )
4) If updated the android build / ginger bread or cm7 or so would improve the camera quality.
thanks in advance.

thanks for the prompt reply...
sadly I can not answer that question, as:
1) I did not check (dont know how to as yet), I am assuming that it at its default setting
2) the phone is not currently in my possession ( prolly not for the next two days) .
once again thanks
The menu button (second hard button from the left) will bring up settings. Check Resolution. I've noticed that pictures in lower light aren't too great. Remember though, its a phone with a camera. The camera is, at most, second.

hope fully I can get my hands on it tomorrow...
I am hoping that the camera can be adjusted to take quality pics...
sad if my old nokia kicks the teeth out a glacier
The LCD panel and the camera picture quality are not related. The good/bad screens basically refer to the two vendors HTC sourced for the MT4G's LCD, with the good one being the Sony S-LCD and the bad one being manufactured by Sharp. The differences between the screens lie in their contrast, color rendering, and off-axis viewing angles. There are some theories that the differences are not actually caused by the screen, but rather by the digitizer, but unless the digitizer was replaced, the screen and digitizer seem to go hand in hand.
The camera on the MT4G simply isn't that good. Unlike the camera for the Amaze, I've never read of an editable image compression setting for the MT4G's camera, so I'm inclined to believe that one doesn't exist.

I had two mytouch.
One good.one bad.
I have to say the cm7 camera from tdj's 12/30/11 cm7 Kang took some great pictures.
I tested every camera option available(alot of basketball/baseball games),and for some reason that Kang was the best as far as cameras.
Should it have been different? I do.t know why! Cant explain it!
Those pictures were crisp and clear.
I sure I posted a pic in that thread to check it for sure.right around new years.
Found the picture.posted it above.
On both phones the camera was super bad.
Thats why thr darkside was the best side.

I was not impressed with the quality of the pictures from the MT4G before it died. The outdoor pictures in daylight still had significant compression artifacts, soft focus, and undersaturation. Not natural saturation. Undersaturation. Blacks weren't black. Indoor pictures with incandescent lighting were just dreadful. Honestly, the picture quality was comparable to my Motorola RAZR2 V9x with an extra three megapixels.
Lol.haha.its a phone.its a 5mp camera.
Not bad for what it is.
