Any risk in rooting? - General Questions and Answers

Hello guys,
I'm thinking of trying to root my San Francisco II, but the only rooting method I've found is the one that includes flashing and using adb. I haven't discovered if any of the one-click apps such SuperOneClick or Universal Androot will work on my device- is there any risk in trying to use them or is it perfectly safe for me to just give it a shot?
Thanks

I think the worst that can happen is that it doesn't work, but I'd suggest doing the ADB method. These one-click rooters don't teach you anything about the phone. If you really want to try then try it, but the known method will get you acquainted with the device and manual flashing so that in the future if you have a problem or want to try something then you have the tools to do so - in your head, and installed on your computer.
If you want to try those apps, I don't see how it could brick your phone. If you have done a search to see if they work on your phone and have come up with nothing, chances are they won't work.

I tried using SuperOneClick, didn't work unfortunately. I don't want to do the ADB method as it installs Clockwork Recovery and I don't want to mess around with roms etc on this device yet, I'd rather wait until I'm comfortable with the methods etc, and currently they look a bit too tedious for my liking.
Thanks for your comment, really appreciate it.

You can have CWM installed without flashing any roms. You would probably use it to flash Superuser to gain root. If you're not comfortable doing it then wait. Take some time to read up on everything. Read everything you can find. Read the Q&A forums and read the responses, you'll find a lot of little things that aren't covered in guides. If there's a video on YouTube then watch that. When you feel like you are comfortable with all of it then root.
If you're not tech savvy and it's difficult for you, then you can always get someone else to teach you. I do one on one crash courses (a couple hours) in person for gas money plus a little (15-30 bucks, depending on time), they're tailored for what the person needs - an older person that just needs to know how to download apps and stuff or someone that wants to flash and tweak their heart away. If you have the money, check craigslist. If you can't find anything then make an ad.
If you need further assistance in general, I'm here to help if you get stumped. While I'm not familiar with your phone, I'd be happy to look over the rooting method and help you out (for free, of course). If there's a specific forum for your device then I'd check there and post any questions you have.
Good luck!

One click root and s-off?????

Now, I know I read about a one click solution that was not allowed to come out. My question is, when are we going to have a one click unroot? I have no problems using commands to root my device, I am simply asking the question in a thread form. This way "The Finders of Root" can see there is client base for it. Thanks for any answers or comments.
EDIT: This is meant to be a One click ROOTthread. Sorry for the confusion

I would like to see it, and hoped it was coming, but there is some debate on it atm.
Some of us feel that users should learn to use adb, and how to flash RUUs, to make it easier for them to recover from a goof in the future.
Just pm him...it works.

I hear you, is the method introducted earlier safe to use? What do you mean it works? Have you used it?
I agree that peeps should learn about it so they don't flood the forum with "help I pricked my phone" posts...but at the same time I think there should be an easy alternative for those of us who can't seem to get the hang of using adb. For some reason I can never get adb to work for me...I am however very comfortable changing roms and doing things in hboot. I just came from the incredible and was really looking forward to getting rid of all the crap on my phone that I will never use but I'm not confident enough in adb to obtain root that way...so yes there is a want for an idiot proof way to root the thunderbolt. Just my $.02.
I would like to see the one-click root released only because it is the safest way for a noon like me to root. When you spend $200.00+ on a phone you want to get the maximum out of the phone without bricking it. Why not let the user decide what he wants to use?

What happens when you flash a bad .zip and you HAVE to use adb to get your phone back to a working state?
It is much safer having someone without allot of experience rooting their new device by way of say a one click method then entering wrong commands and surely bricking their device. Just my opinion. I have rooted several android phones and the Thunderbolt is allot more involved, much more involved then any rookie should fool with.
So bring on the one click method if it available. I'm sure many are willing to pay for a great app like that. I sure would.

A long as you are backing up before you flash then you should never have that problem... Honestly we could go back and forth all day about this but all we are trying to get across is that there is a valid market for a one click root out there

That's like saying that we need to learn how to operate a manual transmission when we own an automatic transmission. If it comes up, it comes up, and people can use that guide or any other stickied guide in all the other dev forums to ge themselves out of a jam.
I can tell you that I personally have no intention of ever flashing a custom ROM. All I want to do is root the phone and delete bitbop, blockbuster, etc. Why should I be subjected to arbitrary disciplinary action under the guise of 'for your own good'.
I mean, I donate money to pretty much all the devs who's products I use because I respect their work. So, needlessly stifling efforts to make things easier for the end user, and also someone who may end up buying your lunch, is unproductive and hurtful to the community at large.

I really hope you're not withholding it because you feel people should learn how to do it the right way. I was in the irc chat for 10 hours both friday and saturday trying to get help but since everyone and their brother was in there i didn't get any help. I understand its tough taking time helping someone out and getting nothing in return. if devs (like you) wanted to get paid for their work i'd happily, happily pay. I have the money, but i dont have the time/patience right now. Some people dont all day to learn how to do something just to get rid of the bloat on their phone. Unless there's another nonroot way, I've been waiting to get all my game data (i.e. angry birds)of my rooted og droid to transfer over to my new phone. Only way i've had luck in the past with titanium backup pro. if I could get help there at least it will be a start.
Wow, a whole thread of people wanting the one click unroot. This should tell people something.

boot into recovery and flash the backup you made
or
boot into fastboot and run PASSIMG.zip/PG05IMG.zip...then re-root
just so folks that are new here know: these guys saying you need adb are lying, or don't know what they're talking about. I rooted my Nexus One with one-click and NEVER needed adb either before or after rooting. I flashed hundreds of ROMs and even had a few screwups(lost recovery, bootloops, flashed bad .zips, etc..) and I always recovered NEVER needing adb.
I have never need adb post rooting before either. Unless you screw up the rooting process, otherwise you can just boot into recovery and restore to the nand backup you made.
..........
I am going to see if I can convince Jaywan or someone to produce one.
It seems like the whole easy-root thing opened a can of worms. I'd be more than happy to release my easy rooter for use by the general public if jcase says it's alright but I think the topic here is unrooting, at least that's what it says in the title. As someone said you should have no problem flashing a stock update file and it is a good idea to have an unroot method for warranty purposes.
its because i am retarded, I meant for the title to say root.

I would like to second this: at least let dbzfanatic be part of the process or something since he has a one click method ready AND IS WILLING TO HELP US BY RELEASING IT.
If it's about money, I for one would donate to both of you! I'm willing to donate to ALL the folks responsible for development!
or, at the VERY LEAST, tell us the real reason behind not releasing one click because this nonsense about learning adb does not fly at all for the reasons mentioned already in this thread by multiple users. You yourself just said you'd like to see a one click root released:

[Q]Can someone help out an Android/Smartphone Noob

Hi there, I am new to the xda forum although I have been reading on it for quite some time. I understand all the work and time that the developers and others put in here and I would like to say thanks.
Ok so, I just bought my first smartphone(infuse) and I am wanting to root it. I have read alot on here (extremely informative forum) and have decided that by rooting I would be able to accomplish some things I wouldnt otherwise be able to do. I was hoping that some folks here would help shed some light on a few things for me. I keep reading about titanium backup and 3emod recovery and I was wondering if those are needed before I try to root my phone or if those are for rom flashing and kernels. Are there are any key things that I need to do like back up my original settings or something on my stock phone before I root it? If so, could you please explain the easiest way of doing this. Again, I am not wanting to flash roms(waiting for GB), just to root.
From what Ive read it seems all you have to do is install some samsung drivers(kies) and run a superoneclick program and thats that. Is it really this simple?

If all you want to do is "root" your phone. Yes, install the samsung drivers ( I downloaded kies mini and it installed them for me, from samsung ) And hook the phone up with usb debugging checked and use the superoneclick, it really is that simple.
Titanium backup is great so you don't have to go and redownload all your apps again, even saves the information, like if you were 8 levels into a game. Very useful app.
3emodd is used to get to the clockwork mod so you can install "roms", since you don't want to do this don't worry about it.
Hope this helped.

[ROOT] Samsung Conquer Method (PLEASE MOVE)

Devs, please move this as my question has been answered and i would like it to be easily accessible to other Conquer owners. Thank you.
I take absolutely no credit for this method.
Thanks goes to the creaters of SuperOneClick and to dray_jr bringing this method to my attention.
Here is a quick Guide to Rooting your Samsung Conquer 4G
1. Download Super One Click Root 2.3.1(below)
2. Extract the rar to any location you choice
3. On your phone click Menu, Settings, Application, Development and check USB Debugging.
4. Open SuperOneClick
5. Plug your phone in to the USB
6. Click Root and watch it do its thing
When it is done it should have installed SuperUsers and you should now be rooted.
At this time there is no Roms or Recoverys so the only thing we benifit from is some apps and being able to remove some of the clutter.

The reason Im posting here is to get the attention of devs.
My fiance just upgraded to the conquer since it was free and I've been out if work. It doesn't appear anyone is trying to root it yet as there isn't even a sub forum on xda.
Was wondering if I could enlist the help of you fine devs to get this phone rooted. We mainly want root for wifi hotspot so we can cut out internet costs. I know I can just use my hero but would much rather use a phone running 4G.
Thanks in advance for all HELPFUL comments.

This would be better suited and answered in the General Forum of XDA. My search of it yields no results in root yet but I'd be patient and someone will eventually. They've already released source code for the phone so it shouldn't be too hard when an experienced dev gets a hold of it.
I don't know of any other Heroc devs getting this phone so that's why I suggest posting this along with the other people hoping to achieve root. This only gets attention of Heroc devs who mostly all moved to the shooter 3vo (me also soon). Plus with ICS development going on most of us have got our plates pretty full. At least i know I do.
Figured I'd post at least something for you since no one else responded.

i was able to with no questions at all. i have Titanum Backup Root Fully working.
I also tried installing a custom recovery it gave me 2 options Epic and GalaxyS i9000 i tried both just to try with no luck. i might sit down today and look into getting a recovery and or Rom to work but i am not fimilar with doing this but i am still going to try
Once i start i will be making a thread with updates on how it is going. What i would like to see on this phone is of course a clockwork recovery. But also i want a Rom with Sprint ID removed along with the rest of the bloat ware. other then that the phone it self runs great minus a few bugs here and there with some games not booting up or randomly kicking me to the home screen.
but anyway i hope everyone enjoys the root we have now

[Q] How do I know if I am experienced enough to take this on?

Hello,
I have heard about a phone being rooted or not rooted for sometime now and I decided to look into what it meant today. I've decided that I would like to root my LG Optimus V after reading quite a few articles regarding why I should root the phone. I am hoping to get rid of the unnecessary applications that can not be moved to the SD card; it stops me from downloading apps that I'd like to have.
I saw the guide to rooting this phone and I am good at following instructions and have more than average computer experience but I don't know anything about the android system or cell phone rooting.
Under the what you need, I am embarrassed to admit that I don't know what "ADB installed and working" is! I definitely want to learn more and attempt this but am unsure what to do next. Take it on? Some of what I have read about this is almost like another language. I appreciate any and all of your assistance.
cs.
I am on my phone, so it's hard to give you links, but in the Android developers, there is a guidde for setting up ADB. The most hardest part is wait the download time and slow instalation process to make it running. You need a 60 MB file, install it (the longest thing), and some files, Wich are less than 10 MB, extract it to the right folder and you're done.

Don't do something if you're not sure that it will succeed. Rooting caused me to soft brick my Samsung Galaxy S and I barely managed to save it. There's no guarantee that it will save you if it happens. Just warning you. If you root your device however, you do get a whole new experience of Android. Weigh this out, and try it.
Optimus V huh?
If its anything like the Optimus T, it can easily be rooted by just downloading z4root app and running it
Edit: if its running 2.2.1, z4root works. but if the firmware is 2.2.2 and beyond, then ADB is your method
Do your research. If you decide to do anything to your phone I repeat do your research. Google is your best friends, literally type your question when you have one and find the answer. Get a notepad read threads, watch youtube "how to's" using google put in quotes "HOW TO ROOT" "HOW TO _____" etc. Don't attempt anything till your sure and if something goes wrong don't make the mistake of thinking well I'll do this, this makes sence. You can easily brick your phone doing whAT you think "makes sence" last write the steps down on your note pad with links etc. Make instructions for yourself. If you do all this and you still aren't sure then you aren't ready
Im a noob just read around on the site a lot and take on the task when you feel comfty I've got a hang of it in about a week or so.

Easy guide to ADB setup with screenies
the best method i know of is to use super one click root a simple google search will find you the program easily. I have rooted several devices with no fails using this method
Rooted Devices:
-Zte Blade
-Vodafone 858
-samsung galaxy s2
-motorola droid x
-and more
The process only involves this
1) Switch on usb debugging rom the phones settings
2) connect the usb to the phone and pc
3) click the root button on the program wait for it to root
4) reboot the phone and you will have rooted the device
a good way to make sure that you have root access on your phone is to download root checker rom the market, this app will tell you if you have root access or not mate
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks

Mike,
For some reason, I thought I was not 2.2.2 but the phone was upstairs when I checked this message so I wasn't sure. Of course, since it is more difficult to do, I DO HAVE 2.2.2. !
I hadn't seen the new posts yet as I've been moved to this forum (Sorry I didn't get that right!) and I see that killall has provided the link to ADB I was going to ask for. I see that there are other posts, too, and I will definitely read them now.
One other question! If I get stuck somewhere, which part of the forum do I need? Not that I expect to but it's best to be prepared!
Thanks, again!

Hello all and thanks again to all of you for your input.
Fanboy_Hunter - Thank you for all of the good, sensible advice. I have bookmarked so many pages at this point that it is all spinning in my head. I need to go through them and compare for consistency and try to understand the why's behind the how's! Also, thank you for what should have been obvious - using YouTube videos; I just use them for music and when someone sends me something funny; I've never thought of You Tube as a "How to" source. A big thank you for that.
Deromeh - It was certainly good to hear that someone else was in a similar situation and was able to catch on within a week. It gives me some hope . . .
killall - Thank you for the link to ADB; I haven't followed it yet but I had already typed my previous post and just before I hit enter to submit it, I saw your link. Much appreciated.
Kannibalism - As I mentioned above, I have been to numerous websites and can't keep them straight - yet! I do remember my phone being on a list of phones that I can use Super One Click with but underneath the list, it was suggested I try another way first. I kept looking for my phone's directions on that website but couldn't find them. Time to re-research. Any idea why they'd say it's on the list for Super One Click and then to try something else first? I'll try to find the quote on that one.
I did try to find out if my phone is rooted or not by using a program downloaded to my phone from the Android Market called Connectbot. The directions from the website were to follow the directions with the download carefully and I would end up with either a * or a #; one meaning rooted and the other not rooted. (I could be wrong about the * and # - it could have been different symbols.) There were no instructions with the download and the screen that comes up is nothing I am even slightly familiar with; it asks me to "Use the quick-connect box to connect to a host." Totally unfamiliar with that.
Can you suggest a simple program to see if my phone is rooted or not?
Sorry for the length of the post; please know I appreciate the feedback!

Simple program to check root is this mate: click here
As for super one click saying that the phone should be rooted in another way i have no idea why maybe because a dev has fixed an app to root the phone
for example when rooting my zte blade the method that i was supposed to use was using a modified app i skipped the app and used super one click to root. I did this because i have more confidence using super one click than a modified app.
When rooting a phone there will be no extra benefits when using another method since once the phone has been rooted they have all the same benefits

[Q] is there an "easy" way to root safely?

I want to get rid of the bloatware. That's all. But this is my phone, and I don't want to brick it.

I've also read and discarded info from some other sites because I don't know who they are and don't trust them as much as I do the folks here.
It appears that SuperOneClick would be the easiest method, so I was going to follow the basic tutorial here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S/SGH-T959V/Rooting. This is a really simple list of things to do that I know I can handle, but I still have questions.
I downloaded SuperOneClick 2.2 from the XDA-Dev thread. The newer version is supposed to be on his blog, but it links to a file share service that says there's no file there. Is the version I got going to be OK? Do I need the newest? Any idea where to get it? Or should I be using an older version for some reason?
Both the tutorial on Androidforums.com and the page here for SuperOneClick call for drivers for Windows (I will be working Win7-64) but the links in the tutorial are dead. Do I actually need this driver? The XDA wiki says nothing about drivers, but SuperOneClick does. If I do need it, where can I get it?
The XDA wiki recommends getting BusyBox. I checked the Play store, and there are 8 apps called BusyBox by 4 different authors. Which one?
Is there anything else I should know or consider that's not in the wiki?
Any and all guidance will be much appreciated.
Thanks.

I want to get rid of the bloatware. That's all. But this is my phone, and I don't want to brick it.
I've pretty thoroughly read or listened to these over the course of several days, so I think I have a handle on at least some of this:

SuperOneClick just happens to package the zerg exploit: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1375517
But that path will not lead you to less bloat. You'll root your phone and will either have to remove bloat manually or use one of the fancy bloat removal tools in these forums.
Or just do what I do almost every day. Use heimdall to flash a kernel and rooted rom.
Unless you have the wrong device (always check the model number behind the battery), it's very hard to brick this phone with our oneclicks.

From what I read, yes, SuperOneClick has the Zerg exploit, but that's not supposed to be bad. Is it? What I read led me to believe that after rooting the phone with SuperOneClick I could install TitaniumBackup which can get rid of the bloatware for me.
Flashing a new kernel and rooted ROM every day sounds much scarier and like more work to me than running something once, getting an app to get rid of my bloatware. Maybe I don't have enough info yet?
Double-checked model behind battery. Good thought. Thanks. Good to know this model is hard to brick.
Umm. "with out oneclicks"? Who's "our" and what/where are oneclics? I need links, please, or more info for improved searches.
Thanks

It's just as dangerous as using a oneclick.

Sure, there are also specific tools like @FBis251's debloater that will get rid of tmobile specific stuff. But flashing a rom without the bloat is so much easier.

My point was that it is that safe. If I can do it every day (because I'm actively deving on multiple versions), then you can do it once or twice with the same ratio of success.
which ever route you take, you have to connect your device to your computer with all the right software/drivers setup and configured.
Make sure you don't use front panel usb on tower computers. If you have a problem on one computer, try a different computer. Cables go bad, try different cables. Check for pocket lint in the usb port of the phone, yadda yadda...
OK. Thanks. Going back and reading more now.
Back later after homework is done.
