[Q]Can someone help out an Android/Smartphone Noob - Samsung Infuse 4G

Hi there, I am new to the xda forum although I have been reading on it for quite some time. I understand all the work and time that the developers and others put in here and I would like to say thanks.
Ok so, I just bought my first smartphone(infuse) and I am wanting to root it. I have read alot on here (extremely informative forum) and have decided that by rooting I would be able to accomplish some things I wouldnt otherwise be able to do. I was hoping that some folks here would help shed some light on a few things for me. I keep reading about titanium backup and 3emod recovery and I was wondering if those are needed before I try to root my phone or if those are for rom flashing and kernels. Are there are any key things that I need to do like back up my original settings or something on my stock phone before I root it? If so, could you please explain the easiest way of doing this. Again, I am not wanting to flash roms(waiting for GB), just to root.
From what Ive read it seems all you have to do is install some samsung drivers(kies) and run a superoneclick program and thats that. Is it really this simple?

If all you want to do is "root" your phone. Yes, install the samsung drivers ( I downloaded kies mini and it installed them for me, from samsung ) And hook the phone up with usb debugging checked and use the superoneclick, it really is that simple.
Titanium backup is great so you don't have to go and redownload all your apps again, even saves the information, like if you were 8 levels into a game. Very useful app.
3emodd is used to get to the clockwork mod so you can install "roms", since you don't want to do this don't worry about it.
Hope this helped.

Why do you need ClockworkMod?

Why do you need to set up a recovery or cwm for your phone after it's been rooted?
Almost all of the Kernels and ROM's are installed/Flashed through the Clock Work Custom Recovery. Plus you can use it to do Nandroid backups and clear cache and so on. It's really a great utility to have.
Ok thanks. I'm just really nervous about trying to CwM my phone again cause last week I had to get a new phone cause I did something wrong.
Do you think you could possibly give me step by step instructions on how to properly recover my phone using CwM? I'm not the brightest person and Im kinda clueless with all of this stuff.
EDIT:
Will this do the trick?

First of all, most people around here aren't experts when they begin this process - but they definitely AT LEAST have a clue - so I suggest you take some time doing research before you even attempt any of these things. If you're not wanting to do so, try to find someone that you know that has done some modding and see if they can help you. Our references around here are pretty clear and cover all bases, so there shouldn't be too many questions to ask after reading around.
To answer your question, that thread you linked has an odin package that includes a custom recovery (clockworkmod) along with a complete 2.2 stock image, so it would be a good place to start.
Do you need to use cwm if you just wanna use apps that require your phone to be rooted? Sorry for all of the questions.
CWM and Rooting aren't really connected. Some background info, from what I've learned thus far:
Rooting just changes a couple files in the OS portion of Android to allow you to have Superuser access (like Administrator on a Windows machine). All of that goes on in the OS partition.
CWM Recovery, its full, proper name, is a custom Recovery. The default recovery allows just a factory reset for the most part. CWM Recovery allows that, but also allows many more options; clearing user/Dalvik cache, performing Nandroid backups and restores, enabling or disabling Voodoo (note that you need to have a separate Voodoo-compatible kernel installed), flashing things from ZIP files on your SD card, and so on.
The short answer then is no, you don't even need to think about CWM if all you want to do is root your phone and use apps that require it to be rooted.

If you are just wanting to use apps that require root access then no you don't have to use CWM. You need CWM if you are going to flash a kernel or ROM or any other Mod for your phone. Rooting and CWM are two different things. As long as your phone is rooted, then you shouldn't have trouble using apps that reuire root access, with or without CWM on your phone. At least I didn't when I first began doing this stuff. Granted Im still a noob to an extent but my phone was rooted for a long time before I ever installed CWM and I never had an issue with the root apps
Edit: didnt' mean to be redundant. Chromewolf posted while I was typing mine

Damnit! I needed to have found someone else I could have bet money on that not only would I get corrected on that, but that it would be by add. No money for me. XD
But seriously, while add is correct on the matter of semantics, the point I was trying to make is that CWM is just a custom Recovery (which I've sort of taken to needlessly capitalizing lately to emphasize the difference a bit more), as opposed to an app or something.
Brief off-topic: A present for you add, especially if you're a gamer. I hope you lol at it, I know I always do (and I'm the *functional* rules lawyer of the group, LOL), and I'm not the one who wears it!

I believe you can, but you can't use a one click root method. Everybody still says it's easy to do, but I don't quite get it. I'm not an idiot, but I just don't understand some of the stuff they say to do. Apparantly you have to "install nvflasher through clockworkmod". I see where I can download clockworkmod, but it's just a bunch of DLL files and an exe I think. Then I saw something about installing drivers and they lost me. My only guess was the drivers it installs when you plug your phone into your computer via the usb port? I don't know. Anyway, after installing the nvflasher, I guess you can just flash roms. I don't quite understand how to do that either though, lol.
Follow the first part of this video to get clockworkmod recovery on your phone. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cy9on64jAZs)
From there you can flash roms. In the dev section there is a stock rooted ROM by xboarder.

This.
All the instructions are here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847 thanks to TGA_Gunnman. I understand a lot of us are new to rooting/flashing but there's so much information just lying around that it's beyond how many times the same question is asked.
what I don't get is what to do if you only have a mac.
You can also use superOne clicks new app. Only works on windows

Are you saying this method works on the stock Gingerbread rom? I thought SOC didn't work with GB on the G2x.

Just a heads up...I don't think this will work. Unless SOC updated to a new version. Just search the forums use this "how to root after OTA " I recommend NVFLash CWM then if you want 2.3.3 rooted search "stock OTA rooted." Posted by xboarder. Or use a custom rom. This has been asked to many times. Yes it is possible to root some other way. That to is covered by xboarder also. Unless SOC has a new version out with in the last week it wont Work.....read post 4665. But I do have great news......the search options in the forums do work and even Google searches will direct you to xda. If you find a post about something read all of it. Then read the OP(opening post) 3 to 4 time looking at dates and change logs..
So to recap
1) SOC will not work. NVFlash clockwork.
2) use the search/Google.
3) if you read this and did not see xboarders name at least once befor this post, reread.
4) read and reread.....keep reading....the answers are posted.
5) read the OP. Look at dates and change logs.
If you don't like my response to this post go buy an iPhone. The rest of us are sick of seeing the same questions. That is all

Yeah, I might look at it again and give it a try later on. There's still a few things i'm confused about though.
I didn't know you could flash roms without rooting first. But I guess flashing a rooted rom technically does root your phone? It's just a different way of achieving root? Also, if you are gonna flash roms, I thought you had to do the nvflash routine.. which would root your phone anyway.. lol.
I believe some cases that could be true. Root could be needed to install a flash recovery. Our phone use nvidia. The nvflash utility makes it easy. Some one please correct me if I am wrong. When you nvflash you are replacing the factor/stock recovery with CWM. At that point you could put any Rom you like. I kind of see it like a boot disk. Root allows you to see system folders and such. Kind of like having admin rites on your computers operating system. Root also aloes programs to modify system information. To compare this to the common computer root is like an admin account in windows. Unroot is like a user account that companies give you on their computer. CWM is like having a boot disk. I hope I cleared that up for some one.

Hey I know u mean well but I would first ask doniqcc since it is his rom ya know
Root first?
So with this whole NVflash thing, does that mean you really don't need to root first, because NVflashing is already rooting it for you?

Yes and no, in that order. You can use nvflash to replace the stock recovery with a custom recovery, such as clockworkmod recovery. Using custom recovery, you can flash any rom that's compatible with the phone. Most of the roms have superuser privileges (root) built into them.
Good news i found a root for and it works i am so happy and now i dont have to mess with the eaglesblood rom (now offence) but you do have to flash clockworkmod recovery in order to flash the su root package for my info go to facebook and search LG G2x (official)

Huh? The info has been on this board for weeks how to do that already.
Thanks for the help everyone, I get it now!
Hey everyone, I just want to let you all know that I was able to do the NVFlash, backup everything, and install CM7.
I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THE HECK I WAS WORRIED ABOUT!!!! It was so incredibly easy.
CM7 is installed, however I'm having issues with my APN now working and losing its information, I've posted for help on that in another thread.
Thanks again, and to those out there who worry like I did...have no fear....CWM is a neat tool, ESPECIALLY for backup of your entire phone.
Thanks.

[Q] Need Noob Help Samsung Galaxy S2 skyrocket Android ATT

I am a noob I don't even know what to call my phone shezz. Alright I am going to keep this simple. I am very very new to this smart phone thing. I have never had one. I know computers very well and have lots of exp with them but none with a smart phone. I have had a lot of trouble getting the right info on my phone. I have read a bit about everything but some things apply to my phone some to others some don't make sense. So some basic stuff.
I tried to flash my phone using odin. I did it right but it didn't seem to work. I installed super user, and I clockwork. My questions are this.
Is it possible I changed system systems on my phone when I flashed it. I put superuser on it, and box system and clockwork and I tried using odin (I might have) im not sure. I don't know if I changed the rom.
Why changed the rom? Like... my phone has all the programs on it I want and it looks and feels how I want. I have changed it a lot before I rooted it. So whats the point of a new rom which im not sure if I have or not? What else can I change with flashing? I tried installing some stuff I just don't know if I did.
I can change the rom for sure I Know but what else? Kernal? The built?
At this point should I clean the phone wipe it? Then reinstall my apps? I heard when flashing the rom you wipe the storage so do I need to do this?
Also I am using 1.2gigs of system memory then there is usb storage then sd storage then external sd storage. This confuses me? Did I break my phone arr.
I don't get how moving apps to the SD card helps? I tried but the Sd card is still blank. Am I confusing the things? I do have a extra sd card in it.
OK. What I want is speed better wifi these things. So Should I flash my rom? is there a good stable rom for my phone? What else is worth changing? I don't mind doing it I just need make sure I can get all my apps back and that I do it right.
OK last questions. If I change my mind and don't want a rooted phone can I put it back easy? I have read how to unroot but can't I just reinstall factory defaults or is that not a option to unroot it? I have backed up deleted back up deleted and so forth I really just want to stream line everything get the best programs for rooting, rom, backup, accces, yada yada. I tried looking in forums but I get such mixed info and random posts I don't understand.
So again.
Please feel free to link good threads or forums with the info I need. I am so lost right now.
I don't mind rooting my phone but I want to do it right for the best results. Please help me do that.
I want to make sure if I don't decide to flash it with new rom or whatever that I can just undo everything go back to the orignal phone and just take more care installing my apps again to not get to much crap that I know is slowing it down.
I also want info on getting rid of bloatware I don't need.
PLEASE HELP GOD!! I just want to do this right I feel like I overclocked my cpu but I have to low of ram and its overheating. I feel just like I have this great possible thing in front of me and im messing it up.
Thank you. Basic info.

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
you didnt keep that simple AT ALL.
why do you think you need to do anything at all if you have no idea what it is you are even talking about?
leave it stock. keep reading. dont do anything to change your phone/rom until you UNDERSTAND that you are not playing with a childs toy.
if you dont know what anything is called, and you dont know if you actually rooted or not, or flashed a rom or not, PROVES you have no business doing anything yet.
SLOW DOWN AND READ. LEARN and stop trying to jump into whatever video or tutorial you find on the internet.
I have overclocked my computers before ,water cooled, flashed bios. yad yada..
First smart phone. ever. My last phone was 20 bucks and I tossed it when I was done. that was 5 years ago. I am just getting into smart phones.
Really what I want is this.
I want a streamlined phone minus the stuff I don't need. To increase my bat. life. increase my productivity, increase my wifi if possible in crease my speed. More bank for my buck. But not knowing much about smart phones I would rather just do as little as possible and then not touch it again. Like flash it (whatever that entails) with a new rom then push the optimize button then be happy. Get what I mean? I Don't mind overclocking but I want this thing stable. I would rather it be last fast then have to tweak it every few days ok? Is there a rom with tweaks already installed? Do I have to format my phone first?
I have clockwork, busybox, superuser.
For sure I rooted my phone for sure I have clockwork installed. I rooted it.
Now what? I like messing with programs and such and themes and stuff but I don't want to tweak it a lot. I want it to be tweaked. get it?
Any info by great. A website with a stable tweaked rom. a link to a how to on how to install that rom. and just be kind. I don't know smart phones. Thank you so much for any help. Sorry I know it wasn't simple. Because I want only a basic thing. A faster phone. But I have tons of questions. Thanks.
Also be nice to know what I did to it already? I mean could I of changed to rom on accident? I used odin? I don't know what that is but I follwed the directions but it didn't root after I followed the instuctions so I turned to clockwork and then it worked. I was following rooting websites one made me think I have a new rom. But i never flashed it. thanks for the info.
If you did anything your on stock rooted rom. You would know if you flashd a rom u cant accidently or unknowingly flash a rom. Cwm is for flashing roms you download a rom put the zip on your sd card boot into cwm wipe data and cache and install zip from sd card. If u download a rom not intended for your phone say goodbye to your phone. You sound in a big hurry to flash flash flash. But i do not think u realize how very easy it is to break you phone doing this. Read read read read read read trust everyone telling you this read what rooting is what roms are what kernel's are and read how too root how to install roms and the differencrs op's have in there roms as to which wil best suit your needs. Do yourself a big favor dont flash or attempt to until u have done a good deal of reading up. If u dont think this is the case browse around on xda and look how many please help? Brickd my phone? Amen to that. I have rooted 3 of my girlfriends phones and my old roomates and i had to constantly fix there phones for them after they soft brickd them
your right after reading a lot more Im not ready to flash. I got some questions readings are not answering for me.
I have the firmware gingerbread I believe. and its uckj2 ver kernil 2.6.35.11
does the gingerbread uckj2 mean anything? I don't get the updating you don't have to format. Because I hate the idea of getting my apps back unless I can just use TIT recover once I get my new rom.
I know im going to do this but one more question. When they release a new system on my phone how do I update? Or do I not.
I just.. want to get this right. I know your right. I just... don't get how I find the right rom for my phone. right ver. right kernl. right firmware.
I also don't get why I have to clean my phone first. And how to make sure I can just get my apps right back.
What about all my settings? and my programs to GO launcher and stuff. I got my phone all nifty and pretty but I Really really really want to start with a fresh rom I would feel better. I want to do this . thanks

Hmm you got 3 posts.... I don't think im going to take any of your advise. I bet you don't root your friends phone because you have know friends. Just my guess. What was the point of posting that? I clearly posted that I am reading forums. I just am having trouble getting to the info I need to read in the 100's of phone forums out there. Its confusing me with ver. kernal. Operating system, apps, firmware, built, just little words that I don't know where they fit in on the smart phone. There are a lot of abbreviation.
Anyways. Thanks for the helpful posts. Like I said I know a lot about computers im good with them but I have never had anything like a smart phone in my life. Its so new. Even though I have caught on very fast and already managed to root my phone in about 15min of searching. Im just confused about really the words. I don't understand a lot of the short hand im seeing in these forums. So its hard understand 100percent whats being said. Anyways.. Again thanks for trying to help.
that was uncalled for, saying he had no friends. however rude you think it was, its called brutal honesty.
you seem so hellbent on 'making your phone cool' (which by the way, is NOT the intent of this website), that you seem to be foregoing the basic rule of LEARNING. i understand that all this is new terminology to you, so i implore you, to STOP. stick to XDA forums and go through the basics of LEARNING what everything is.
we all started out as noobs, and we all had to go through the paces of LEARNING what everything meant. Nobody here came to the website already knowing everything there is to know, and all the info you need is already in the forums. stop asking for a handholding session and teach yourself something worthwhile. if you dont have time for it, then you have no business hacking on your phone.

stick to the galaxy s2 skyrocket forums mostly and you will find a lot of the info you need regarding YOUR phone. dont go wandering off looking at roms for another phone, even if its the regular galaxy s2.
EDIT:
i think this post sums up XDA in a nutshell:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2031989&postcount=45
Ok for starters here is the easiest way to root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=13407
Next i would suggest go on android market and download the app.called.rom manager
Install rom manager
Open rom manager and grant it super user permission choose to install cwm recovery for the tmobile galaxy s2 ( yes you have an att phone but just do that it works its the same phone)
Now u have a rooted stock rom with cwm recovery.
For now i woukd just run that until developer support picks up and more roms are developed
Download an app on the android market called titanium back up
Open it grant super user permission.. click menu then batch then find back up all user apps. Now u have all your apps backd up. When u find a rom u like . Download it place it on you sd card. Open rom manager choose install rom from sd card. Check wipe data and wipe cache.
It will reboot into cwm and install the rom for you. When finished choose reboot system now. The volume up and volume down keys is how u change your selection in cwm. The power key is like enter/select.
After your rebooted on the new rom get on the android market download titanium back up and open it click menu batch restore your apps.
This is just suming up alot of what u need to know to flash roms and restore apps. Which u will learn by reading
Once you understand those basics then its time to start flashing and make sure u have odin and the .tar file u need handy. Because restoring apps with system data can cause force closes. I just restore apps not data. And you will at some point soft brick your phone or have a failure that u need odin to save u. Its happend to all of us
You can also make a backup in cwm incase of a bad flash its called a nandroid back up.
I have all the basic programs needed including odin. I understand the risks for sure. A soft brick is? hmm. I backed up my files already however I dons't know if there on the exSD card. I see USB memory, Sd memory, and ex Sd memory and that in its self is confusing me. I will be upset if I backed up my files with Titanium back up and it put it on the part of the phone that will be flashed clean lol.
Guess im not nice *shrug* I don't need sarcastic answers. I asked for help. I admit I am a noob at this. I expect a little slack if im acting anxious to get into this. I tend to like to understand things right away and to get things perfect. I don't like my phone being clumsy. Like I said to make it clear I want to control my phone and stream line it to the way I will be using it. Sorry if I sounded noob in how I worded this at first.
Some good info and good links. I am reading. I guess I was hoping for some basic info so I would understand what im reading a bit better. The terminology is confusing me. Thank you for the help.
I am taking my time, I am reading as much as I can. Its just ..... taking me awhile to get everything strait. Need cliff notes or something for this.
Im not rushing to brick my phone. I have burnt cpus before overclocking and understand the need to know what your doing. I just am impatient.
Thanks again for the +helpful posts. I appreciate it.
I think the problem is that you've come here looking for the easy way out, the 'quick fix' and there isn't one. These people aren't telling you to read the forums just because they don't feel like helping you. They are telling you to read because they can't help you until you do. While your questions in your opening post may seem simple to you, they would likely require half a book to explain if you have no foundation to work from.
If you're having trouble with terminology, google terms you don't understand. The best piece of advice I can give you is DON'T RUSH. It's the surest way to screw up your phone and likely turn you off of android altogether.
thank you. I understand
THANK YOU. There is a galaxy s2 and a galaxy skyrocket s2
DOH! I thought s2 was skyrocket2 no wonder Im having issues. Im reading info on two phones. Dang. That helps so muchhhhhh.
Thank you lol I do need to do some research.
I should of read your links before I posted my question. (sorry)
I will do my best to understand what im even asking next time.
Thank you.
See you later when I have done a bit more research.
Must clean the noob off *scrubs*
Sorry for any rudeness

Any risk in rooting?

Hello guys,
I'm thinking of trying to root my San Francisco II, but the only rooting method I've found is the one that includes flashing and using adb. I haven't discovered if any of the one-click apps such SuperOneClick or Universal Androot will work on my device- is there any risk in trying to use them or is it perfectly safe for me to just give it a shot?
Thanks
I think the worst that can happen is that it doesn't work, but I'd suggest doing the ADB method. These one-click rooters don't teach you anything about the phone. If you really want to try then try it, but the known method will get you acquainted with the device and manual flashing so that in the future if you have a problem or want to try something then you have the tools to do so - in your head, and installed on your computer.
If you want to try those apps, I don't see how it could brick your phone. If you have done a search to see if they work on your phone and have come up with nothing, chances are they won't work.

I tried using SuperOneClick, didn't work unfortunately. I don't want to do the ADB method as it installs Clockwork Recovery and I don't want to mess around with roms etc on this device yet, I'd rather wait until I'm comfortable with the methods etc, and currently they look a bit too tedious for my liking.
Thanks for your comment, really appreciate it.

You can have CWM installed without flashing any roms. You would probably use it to flash Superuser to gain root. If you're not comfortable doing it then wait. Take some time to read up on everything. Read everything you can find. Read the Q&A forums and read the responses, you'll find a lot of little things that aren't covered in guides. If there's a video on YouTube then watch that. When you feel like you are comfortable with all of it then root.
If you're not tech savvy and it's difficult for you, then you can always get someone else to teach you. I do one on one crash courses (a couple hours) in person for gas money plus a little (15-30 bucks, depending on time), they're tailored for what the person needs - an older person that just needs to know how to download apps and stuff or someone that wants to flash and tweak their heart away. If you have the money, check craigslist. If you can't find anything then make an ad.
If you need further assistance in general, I'm here to help if you get stumped. While I'm not familiar with your phone, I'd be happy to look over the rooting method and help you out (for free, of course). If there's a specific forum for your device then I'd check there and post any questions you have.
Good luck!

Root xoom without losing data???

Hello fellow xoom owners... I've had my xoom for awhile now but was hesitant to root because of nagging wife and children who also use xoom. But I'm a "rooter" and I can't take it anymore ...lol. I'm not new to rooting except for xoom as I'm not experienced in adb and what not... so if anyone can help I would be greatly appreciative. I've looked at plenty of tutorials and only found a select few that are simple but losing data is a "requirement"... Anyways as stated earlier any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Idk how I got here...
You will lose data because when you fastboot unlock it wipes the xoom. What you can do is back up your internal data n your computer. After youre done rooting put everything back. Your apps will have to be redownloaded from the play store.

What version of Android are you on?
Currently I'm on 4.1.1 jr003h...
Idk how I got here...
Try this

Its for the galaxy nexus but should work for a Xoom. Basically with 4.0+ we can now do full backups without needing to be unlocked/rooted, you just need adb to be set up.
Thanks for the link. But I'm not really familiar with adb. Guess I am a noob lol

There's no reason to fear adb. It's very easy to set up and to use. After installation, you basically copy-paste the instructions. When I say it's easy, I mean it, last week I didn't have any idea of the existence of adb. An hour after I read about it, I managed to start using it. It's that easy!
I paste you the links I found useful (basically how to use it and how to install it).

I think I'm going to try to make a complete backup this weekend, just to see how much time it takes. But my device is already unlocked and rooted, so I suppose if you decide to try it, it would be on your risk.
Thanks for the links. As soon as I get home I'll read it and see where to go from there. If I'm brave enough to go through with it lol
idk how I got here...
Just word of advice, if you're rooting for the hell of rooting it and you don't need it, I did say (from personal opinion) forget it.
Ok on topic, adb is fairly safe I never heard of anyone bricking their device using adb commands unless they moved some system files (don't know if that's even possible with no root).
