[ROOT] Samsung Conquer Method (PLEASE MOVE) - Hero CDMA Android Development

Devs, please move this as my question has been answered and i would like it to be easily accessible to other Conquer owners. Thank you.
I take absolutely no credit for this method.
Thanks goes to the creaters of SuperOneClick and to dray_jr bringing this method to my attention.
Here is a quick Guide to Rooting your Samsung Conquer 4G
1. Download Super One Click Root 2.3.1(below)
2. Extract the rar to any location you choice
3. On your phone click Menu, Settings, Application, Development and check USB Debugging.
4. Open SuperOneClick
5. Plug your phone in to the USB
6. Click Root and watch it do its thing
When it is done it should have installed SuperUsers and you should now be rooted.
At this time there is no Roms or Recoverys so the only thing we benifit from is some apps and being able to remove some of the clutter.

Feel free to move this if you feel it doesn't belong.
The reason Im posting here is to get the attention of devs.
My fiance just upgraded to the conquer since it was free and I've been out if work. It doesn't appear anyone is trying to root it yet as there isn't even a sub forum on xda.
Was wondering if I could enlist the help of you fine devs to get this phone rooted. We mainly want root for wifi hotspot so we can cut out internet costs. I know I can just use my hero but would much rather use a phone running 4G.
Thanks in advance for all HELPFUL comments.

This would be better suited and answered in the General Forum of XDA. My search of it yields no results in root yet but I'd be patient and someone will eventually. They've already released source code for the phone so it shouldn't be too hard when an experienced dev gets a hold of it.
I don't know of any other Heroc devs getting this phone so that's why I suggest posting this along with the other people hoping to achieve root. This only gets attention of Heroc devs who mostly all moved to the shooter 3vo (me also soon). Plus with ICS development going on most of us have got our plates pretty full. At least i know I do.
Figured I'd post at least something for you since no one else responded.

thanks Matt. I assumed all of the above but I figured id still reach outer to all you guys. Been with you guys for almost 2 years now and know yall are damn good at what you do. Didnt know whether or not someone could use source to try and achieve root with me being the tester.
Now get back to bringing me a beautiful ICS rom lol. J/k enjoying it all for now but moving to Evo 3d in January.
Thanks again. Please move or delete this thread.

mainly need root for wifi hotspot. If it works, the stock kernel should suffice correct?
If it does not work, what are the chances of it screwing up the phone?

i was able to with no questions at all. i have Titanum Backup Root Fully working.
I also tried installing a custom recovery it gave me 2 options Epic and GalaxyS i9000 i tried both just to try with no luck. i might sit down today and look into getting a recovery and or Rom to work but i am not fimilar with doing this but i am still going to try
Once i start i will be making a thread with updates on how it is going. What i would like to see on this phone is of course a clockwork recovery. But also i want a Rom with Sprint ID removed along with the rest of the bloat ware. other then that the phone it self runs great minus a few bugs here and there with some games not booting up or randomly kicking me to the home screen.
but anyway i hope everyone enjoys the root we have now

Throughly Confused. Need Guidance

So I didn't want to bog down posting something that has been answered multiple times over and over again but I am throughly confused on rooting, loading a custom ROM and kernel. So if you can give a straight forward answer to a straight forward question please do.
How do I:
Permanently root my Epic?
After reading I think I would like to install the Epic Experience ROM?
If I install the Epic Experience ROM do I also install the Phoenix kernel (Phoenix kernel is the one I like)?
What is the correct process for installing those kernels and ROMS?
Detailed responses are greatly appreciated!
I am almost thinking that I should wait for the FROYO update to roll out but my usage destroys my battery life and I cannot have my phone dying on me half way throughout the day. It seems the choices I have made (Epic Experience ROM and Phoenix kernel) will greatly improve my battery life. If I do chose to mod my phone does this affect my OTA to FROYO in the future?
Thanks in advance to all your help!

Refer to the guide at the bottom of my signature.
For your question about flashing kernels and ROMs, you'll flash them at the same time from Clockwork recovery.
Can't type all of your answers...it would take me a while so INSTEAD.....go to the stickies....read and follow the first sticky....then go to the third sticky and download what you need....also if not mentioned in those stickies after the first and before going to the third sticky down ......clockwork recovery.....prob in the third sticky tho.....enjoy and welcome
Edit: looks like i still got beat to the punch anyway

No problem. Feel free to PM me or add me on Gtalk, too. I'm always willing to help.
I've been lurking for a while, I will have my Epic Monday so I'm just preparing to root in the evening. I've rooted my Hero so I'm not a complete noob but do have a question.
I have downloaded the following:
-Clockwork Recovery
-Epic Experience ROM
-Sammy Drivers
Is this right, run the one click clockwork batch file which will root me and put clockwork recovery on the sd card so I can boot into recovery, nandroid then flash a rom?
Im not understanding the need to joeykrim root if noobl's clockwork gives perma root.
The EE rom doesnt include a kernel, so you will want to decide on which you would like to download.
As far as I understand, if you only install clockwork recovery (without the one click root), you will have the ability to flash a rom and kernel, but you wont necessarly have root unless you flash a rooted kernel, then you definately will have root.
Got it. Thanks! I actually have phoenix kernel ready to flash once EE is nandroided so i should be all good for root! Thanks for your help!
The first step is probably the most difficult and that is getting you phone recognized by your computer. You have to get the drivers recognized and make sure you have a cable that actually works and a usb port that magically works. The best way to test the cable is first get you phone working in mass storage mode. Then after you can get you phone recognized in usb debug mode you have easy sailing.
I am sure this should be covered in DevinXtreme's walkthrough these are just my 2 cents from my experience.
Edit: I just checked the walkthrough and both of the driver downloads seem to not work they both come up as 227 byte files
also 2 things, which, if they are confusing then just ignore me but I never had to type anything into the cmd prompt and mine worked just fine. Also zip files you want to flash using clockwork mod can be placed anywhere not just on root of sd card. I keep my stuff pretty organized.
There's a video walkthrough on youtube
The video root guide is quite helpful. If you have issues getting your PC to "see" your phone try USB ports on the back of your tower until Windows recognizes it. Front case ports seem to be a no-no for phone recognition. Even getting the same rear port to recognize the phone can be tricky... just play the USB shuffle until one works. It will eventually after installing the Samsung drivers. I've read the stock USB cable is crap, always worked for me though.

I would recommend the guide from the following link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=798067
Easy to follow, and as long as you know what youre doing you should be good. So easy, a 12 year old can do it.
IF you use your phone as much as I do, nothing besides a back up battery will help you ensure you can use your phone an entire day. Plenty of people claim great battery life. However, what ive noticed is that battery life fully depends and varies due to certain factors that you cannot 100% emulate unless you have their exact set up, with their exact apps and exact settings for every app and every function, and sometimes their exact location or service with the network, 4G or WiFi.
Personally, I prefer Epic Experience with Mixup Kernel. I like the look of AOSP Magic ROM, but Epic Experience seems to have better speed and the Dev responds and updates frequently.

[Q] Unroot ?

So being new to the android system and having some experience in the past with WinMo and ROMS and flashing the 1st thing I did with my USSC Mesmerize was to of course root it. No reason.
Used z4root and worked perfect (I guess.LOL) Now have Root Explorer and Superuser.
1st question... Is there a way to unring the bell and Unroot or Reroot. *still learning some new terminology*.
2nd Question.. If I flash with a ROM (once I find one that sounds good) will it be possible to do a hard reset back to factory settings through the Power Button/volume button method. (used that one once as I installed and played with different apps to find what I wanted and needed) It shows a menu when rebooting giving a few options on reset.
Last. If anyone can point me to the Roid Hacking for Dummys section I would be forever grateful. Plans are to learn the ROM processes and work into some app development. (some coding experience and chronic insomniac).
BTW Nice to meet ya all ..
and I thought my Crackberry was addictive

I'm using z4root as well. It gives an unroot option at the main screen. I would assume this would unroot the phone, but I am new as well. My phone unroots everytime I put a new ROM on it, which is strange...

To unroot, I would use Super One Click. It is posted in these forums, just do a search and you should easily find it. Once you have it on a Windows PC or virtualbox, you just have to plug your phone in and click UnRoot.
Once you flash a new ROM, if you do a factory reset, all you will be doing is resetting what is stock for that particular ROM. If you want to go back to stock, you will have to flash the stock files using Odin, or flash a stock ROM and unroot it.
Lastly, if you are considering getting in to developing, it is a lot of fun. Be prepared to learn Linux if you don't already know it. Unfortunately, from what I've found in the learning process, there isn't much in the way of a complete document or guide to tell you how to do it. You just fumble around and learn by trial and error piecing what you read together from other phones and talking to people who are already developing. I have only been involved for a month or so, but I'm willing to help you out with whatever I can. We definitely need more people in the mix.

DO NOT FLASH FASCINATE ROMS... it will make you're phone barf... lol
really though. don't flash anything that isn't for the Mesmerize. I can be dangerous.
but yes they are exactly the same... only different. when you look in our firmware there is still a bunch of leftover vzw crap in there.
Thanks .. LOL seen Fac listed in Clockwork in Downloadable ROMS area. Good thing I wasn't in a adventurous mood tonight .. LOL
I am thinking about flashing the superclean rom, but I'm still a little hesitent until I read into it more. I'm new to phone freedom, my crackberry was not nearly as fun as this phone is. I can't wait to see what we can come up with in the future.

I'm still using the pick and pack rom. I like being able to choose what programs I want to keep, rather than having all or none. I flashed with the voodoo and it's significantly faster.
I'm also a former blackberry user and I agree, these phones are freedom.
If you need any help, feel free to ask. I'm new to this and still getting a lot of help from phidelt82, but I'll do my best. I save all my chat files and am making a list of what exactly to do in order to get backups going, flash roms, install kernals, etc.

Actually that's how you get the mes CWM to work. You have to install the clockworkmod using the thread in the apps and dev section, then flash the fascinate recovery to finish it up. It's essential for flashing roms and such.

[ROOT] G2x Root via SuperOneClick

UPDATE:
The SuperOneClick rooting method outlined in this thread currently only works for Android 2.2. It does not work with Gingerbread 2.3.3.
To root 2.3.3 -
1) Install CWM (ClockworkMod Recovery): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847
2) Flash rooted ROM of your choice. Here is a stock rooted 2.3.3 ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179748
Here's a brief guide on how to root the T-Mobile G2x. This assumes that you already have adb installed. If you do not, a quick search will point you in the right direction
Note: I take no credit for rooting the G2x. I am not the developer of SuperOneClick, and this is a simplified version of a guide already posted by domi007 in the O2x forum (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=953182). I am just posting a guide in the G2x forum because no one else has yet.
1) Install ADB driver: http://www.junefabrics.com/bin2/LGDriver.exe
2) Enable USB debugging on your phone (Settings->Applications->Development), and connect your phone to your computer via USB.
3) Run SuperOneClick: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
4) Choose the option "Root"
It's really that simple...enjoy
update:
jnichols959 has provided a simple solution to rooting the G2x for Mac and Linux users. We hope that keeping two separate threads will not add to forum clutter. On the contrary we think each thread will be less cluttered and therefore be more helpful to the end user.

Ha no problem. I can just install Parallels or Fusion today. I did manage to get SuperOneClick running on my mac using Mono. However, I don't see any way to install the LG drivers executable file on the Mac, so I doubt SOC will work in this manner without those drivers... not sure if I want to risk trying it.

Hey thanks for posting this! I currently own a G2, rooted with cm7. I'm planning on picking this beast up in-store on Wednesday and I'm already itching to root it and get a custom ROM on there.
One question though, does this method achieve a permanent root? My only experience with android thus far is the G2, which required an involved process to root. Is this phone just a lot easier to root for some reason??
And then as far as recoveries and ROM's I'm assuming those haven't been released for this phone yet, right??

Yes permanent root. This G2x is not as locked down as the G2, making the process a whole lot easier. And no, no recovery yet, just stay tuned to these forums.
Oh god yes
I already have ADB driver and SOC ready and I rooted few phones through this way.
It's good to know G2x can be rooted easily.

Nope. It will not.
Received the phone today, rooted it within 5 minutes within hooking up to the computer using the superoneclick tool.
I think it took longer to install the drivers, and SuperOneClick than it did to root the phone.
Alright good to know. Just wondering than if yall have a general idea how long it usually takes a device to get an unlock with root, I am not sure because this would be the first phone for me that I am getting close to the release date.

If you want to SIM unlock this phone, you can call t-mobile after you have purchased the phone, give them the IMEI number, and in about 2 weeks they will email you the unlock code for the phone.

Answered many times please search...
I believe you can, but you can't use a one click root method. Everybody still says it's easy to do, but I don't quite get it. I'm not an idiot, but I just don't understand some of the stuff they say to do. Apparantly you have to "install nvflasher through clockworkmod". I see where I can download clockworkmod, but it's just a bunch of DLL files and an exe I think. Then I saw something about installing drivers and they lost me. My only guess was the drivers it installs when you plug your phone into your computer via the usb port? I don't know. Anyway, after installing the nvflasher, I guess you can just flash roms. I don't quite understand how to do that either though, lol.
Follow the first part of this video to get clockworkmod recovery on your phone. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cy9on64jAZs)
From there you can flash roms. In the dev section there is a stock rooted ROM by xboarder.

Just search the forums use this "how to root after OTA " I recommend NVFLash CWM then if you want 2.3.3 rooted search "stock OTA rooted." Posted by xboarder. Or use a custom rom. This has been asked to many times. Yes it is possible to root some other way. That to is covered by xboarder also. Unless SOC has a new version out with in the last week it wont Work.....read post 4665. But I do have great news......the search options in the forums do work and even Google searches will direct you to xda. If you find a post about something read all of it. Then read the OP(opening post) 3 to 4 time looking at dates and change logs..
So to recap
1) SOC will not work. NVFlash clockwork.
2) use the search/Google.
3) if you read this and did not see xboarders name at least once befor this post, reread.
4) read and reread.....keep reading....the answers are posted.
5) read the OP. Look at dates and change logs.
If you don't like my response to this post go buy an iPhone. The rest of us are sick of seeing the same questions. That is all

Well said.
I was surprised the walkthrough provided here for using NVflash was actually really EASY. whoever made it made sure it was idiot proof. got it on my first try.

Yeah, I might look at it again and give it a try later on. There's still a few things i'm confused about though.
I didn't know you could flash roms without rooting first. But I guess flashing a rooted rom technically does root your phone? It's just a different way of achieving root? Also, if you are gonna flash roms, I thought you had to do the nvflash routine.. which would root your phone anyway.. lol.
I believe some cases that could be true. Root could be needed to install a flash recovery. Our phone use nvidia. The nvflash utility makes it easy. Some one please correct me if I am wrong. When you nvflash you are replacing the factor/stock recovery with CWM. At that point you could put any Rom you like. I kind of see it like a boot disk. Root allows you to see system folders and such. Kind of like having admin rites on your computers operating system. Root also aloes programs to modify system information. To compare this to the common computer root is like an admin account in windows. Unroot is like a user account that companies give you on their computer. CWM is like having a boot disk. I hope I cleared that up for some one.

Hey I know u mean well but I would first ask doniqcc since it is his rom ya know
Root first?
So with this whole NVflash thing, does that mean you really don't need to root first, because NVflashing is already rooting it for you?

Yes and no, in that order. You can use nvflash to replace the stock recovery with a custom recovery, such as clockworkmod recovery. Using custom recovery, you can flash any rom that's compatible with the phone. Most of the roms have superuser privileges (root) built into them.
Good news i found a root for and it works i am so happy and now i dont have to mess with the eaglesblood rom (now offence) but you do have to flash clockworkmod recovery in order to flash the su root package for my info go to facebook and search LG G2x (official)

Huh? The info has been on this board for weeks how to do that already.
Thanks for the help everyone, I get it now!
Hey everyone, I just want to let you all know that I was able to do the NVFlash, backup everything, and install CM7.
I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THE HECK I WAS WORRIED ABOUT!!!! It was so incredibly easy.
CM7 is installed, however I'm having issues with my APN now working and losing its information, I've posted for help on that in another thread.
Thanks again, and to those out there who worry like I did...have no fear....CWM is a neat tool, ESPECIALLY for backup of your entire phone.
Thanks.
John

Are there any devs working on the Samsung Galaxy Stellar?

I keep searching trying to find stuff. I found a thread on another forum that led me to getting root. I know patience is a virtue, and all, but I should would like to see some work on roms, and recoveries, and for there to actually be a section on XDA for this device.
Yeah I accidentally tried to flash a bootloader from the "Verizon-GS3-CASUAL-Revision131a" java program. I lost my backups in the process so can anyone give me a hand with a backup from thier Stellar?
Hey I actually found the open-source kernel and platform for the Stellar at Samsung's Open Souce site.
Would that help me any?
Idk, I unfortunately don't know much about the development side of things. I rely on the devs here for that stuff. I'm to afraid to mess something up to flash something that someone else hasn't said that it works. I used to do that with my Captivate, but I need this phone to work, and not stuck in infinite bootloop

You wouldn't happen to have a backup by any chance?
I don't know what recovery to use, or how to flash it. If I had that I could make a backup, and upload it

If you got ClockworkMod recovery onto your phone (as I saw you got it rooted) you may be able to give me a zip and I think I can make it into a .tar file so Odin will read it since Odin mode is the only mode my phone will get into right now.
I'll keep looking around for some other methods of backup...I also heard Titanium Backup wasn't too bad...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1491157
This link is a place where I found the possibility of using a CWM .zip file for Odin.
I am rooted, but have not installed a recovery. I am not sure which one to flash, or how to flash it

Hmm...you bring up a good point. It's best I not ask you to put in a new recovery mode since we don't know what exactly that will do to the Stellar. I will say that before I bricked the phone I actually did make it work...barely so lets not do that.
Can you try using some programs that access the phone through the computer?
Google this: Index of /romdump
You should find a little program calle Romdump. It should extract the roms without messing anything up.
Do you know about ADB? If not I do have enough experience to help you with that.
You need to have a clockwork mod recovery that is built for this phone, or whatever phone you are using, in order to get it to flash. Without a custom recovery for the galaxy stellar, or at least a recovery that is sure to work for this phone (I think I heard about some S3 stuff that works for the stellar, like the root method I think you used) the recovery will not flash and your phone will not load until you reflash the stock recovery.
Do not flash any recoveries until you know they work for your phone (i.e. someone has tested them), or without a backup of your stock recovery.
Since you are both saying you're not devs and don't really know what you're doing (neither do I really) I would suggest not flashing any recoveries that have not been confirmed to work for the stellar. Yes, many people use CWM and TWRP but there is a custom build of those recoveries for every phone, they are not universal.
I'm really interested in this phone so I'm hoping some development starts. Without community support and development I don't think I would bother switching to Verizon to get this phone even though its free. I hate cell phone contracts...
Not to be rude, but you wouldn't happen to have a rooted Galaxy Stellar on hand?
I also found something else that may help bring the phones back:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=960946
UPDATE: If anyone can use this on their phones I would be very grateful:
This link shows how to use romdump to get the stock firmware.

I thought there would be a lot more people like me who needed a new phone, didn't really have money for an upgrade, so they went with this phone like I did. Doesn't really seem like it has gained much interest in the dev community. It still doesn't have it's own subforum on here. I am starting to really regret getting this phone. Half the fun of having android for me was the dev, and community support for the devices I had in the past. I had the galaxy s, and the inspire 4g, both of which had really big communities, and they started pretty much right at the release for those phones.

No, it'll be a month on the 6th.
Hey do you two have Samsung Stellars? If so, are you interested in rooting your phone?
STOCK ROM!
HEY guys I rooted my phone already. Things were going great, until i decided to download some kind of font switch. I guess it is required for the phone to be root. Then it asked me to restart my phone, that's when my phone froze on the samsung logo screen . It' stuck there ever since. I did a factory reset, and that didn't work either. So i downloaded ODIN and im waiting for a STOCK rom! can anybody help me with that and PM me?It would be great THANKS!
Anyone have an idea on how to back up the stock rom? I haven't seen anyone who has successfully done it with this phone yet

The first post will explain what we think we've found. You can help if you like. Right now we need to confirm that we have access to the recovery image partition.

Sovereign738111 and I worked on this yesterday and got the recovery, system, and bootloader images off of my phone and into a couple of files. Now we just need a developer to give them to...In the meantime I'm also reading up on how to build a custom ROM etc. so that I can get familiarized with it. That way I can possibly try it myself. I know how to compile my own regular Linux kernel and add packages and things of that nature, and looking at what I've seen so far, figuring this out for Android shouldn't be too difficult.
I don't have the Stellar but I would be willing to work on a ROM for you guys. If someone would give me the files I need, I'll gladly do it. Just need a couple of people to test also.
