another great feature. especially if that pesky full nights sleep is bothering you. Samsung are you just testing us?
Does anyone have a solution to this?
Mine doesn't, I don't have haptic feedback on. I wonder if that is why?

I didn't notice the vibrate, but...
My Captivate hangs on its charging cord from a low outlet, and I keep it in my bedroom. At about 3AM, I experienced what it would be like to have an AMOLED night-light.
(When it finished charging, it turned its screen on to tell me and the screen was bright enough to light up the entire room and wake me from a relatively deep sleep.)
I've had it charging beside me and knowing the phone is off you aren't expecting anything from it....scared the sh*t outta me twice now, lol.
When the captivate is fully charged does it have a popup that asks you to remove it from the charger along with the alert?

yep... is there a way to disable this?
I am working on a way for the vibrant and just wanted to see if the captivate was the same. Once I figure it out more it should be able to be made for both. Here is the link to my alpha tests. You can try it if you like but I make no guarantees as to how it will affect the captivate. Make sure you have a nandroid backup if you do try it, also let me know what happens. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=748400
Thanks I'll wait until you get it QA'd.
BTW I figured out a (crappy) compromise, I use CT Scheduler from Market to turn phone off after 11PM. Free app. Not because I'm cheap but I have been spending quite a bit of money on pay apps lately and I like to try things different from the herd so not going with locale.
But anyway, this is a total fail workaround because it would be ideal to have the phone stay on all night, but in vibrate, so if someone does need to reach me in the middle of the night the phone lights up, vibrates, and wakes me up so I can take the call.

I tested your theory.
Phone OFF, Haptic OFF, vibey-vibey = YES
Phone ON, Haptic is OFF vibey-vibey = NO just a big bright room illuminating shock in the night when it turns the screen on to let you know it is charged.
Aha! So then a short term solution is to cover the phone with something, or place it display down? Until someone figures this out, that is.
Whatever engineer designed the timing of the lights on the capacitive touch keys on the Infuse ought to be fired twice. Once for the design and once for not having an option for an adjustable or always on setting when the screen is on.
There must be a way to make the <OPTION/HOME/PREV/SEARCH> bar to stay lit up. It is driving me absolutely nuts. It goes out in like 2 seconds after I have touched it. No idea why they did that. Stupid stupid stupid stupid design. 9 out of 10 times I hit the wrong key while in an app. It is so annoying.
I am really surprised no DEV has built a longer time option or even an always on option for those keys into a ROM. It's dumb design like that that makes me almost miss my iPhone.
From reading & searching it seems this doesn't bother too many people. I just can't understand why not.
I have tried "KEEP THE LIGHTS ON" app but it is pretty much useless on the Infuse.
there is an app called "keep the lights on" i havent tried it on the infuse but it works on some of the sgs phones.
edit: sorry didnt read the last line of the first post,
its not that hard to memorize 4 buttons, and if you touch the screen, the buttons or the volume rocker they come on.
Just tap the screen and they come back on.

As my OP says: "I have tried "KEEP THE LIGHTS ON" app but it is pretty much useless on the Infuse."
Memorizing them isn't the problem, it's hitting the wrong spot. For some people, with specific physical disabilities, it's not that easy.
Just a simple OPTION would resolve the issue. Still a stupid design. If the screen is lit why shouldn't those keys be lit. The amount of power that backlight draws is probably negligible.

Not always depending on what is happening on the screen and sometimes tapping the screen causes problems with the app that is running.

You must really have BIG fingers!
(there are only 4 buttons)
After about an hour of messing around with my phone I am so used to selecting those touchkeys that most the time I do not even look anymore!

Unfortunately for some people there are things that prevent some of the simple things in life that others take for granted from being simple tasks.
They aren't that hard to see with the lights off...My phone is about 5 feet away from me and I can still see the home keys just fine.
wow what's going on, i think we are exhausting the op withthe same advice, lol
like i said, i missed that you tried keep the lights on, and yeah there is no reason the lights shouldnt be on all the time. its just something to deal with. sorry
Is it set on timing or a light sensor? Maybe try ro put something over screen sensor black tape or something.

it is timing, not sure if iti is in services.jar or framework or the kernel. nobody has ever seemed interested in addressing this outside of the keep the lights on app, not sure why.
Let me just say, I am truly pleased that it is not a problem for those of you who replied how easy it is for you, but for those of us that it is a problem it remains a problem.

I hear you. This is one of the few things I don't like about this device. Most of the time it's not an issue, but in low light or darkness it's a bit of a pain trying to locate the right button to press.
"Keep The Lights On" app works fine for me
I just installed the "Keep the Lights On" app, and it works flawlessly. The bottom menu buttons stay on as long as the screen stays on.
Question: When you installed the app, did you add it as a widget, and then enable it? You need root access for this app to work.
I am using Infused 1.5.3, so, not sure if that makes a difference or not.
Edit: Just an FYI, I am using the free version. I would use the pro version, but I'll probably just end up uninstalling this app .

Yes, I installed it as a widget and I do have root access. I am also running Infused 1.53. What kernel are you running? Maybe that is the difference?
It did work for the first few minutes I had it installed than eventually it started getting weird. Sometimes it would work in reverse, most of the time it wouldn't work at all, sometimes it would never shut off (which was OK with me). I contacted the DEV and he said it wasn't compatible with the Infuse and that would be the behavior he would expect.
I think if you use it for a while you'll see what I mean.
Edit: Just uninstalled/reinstalled. First time phone wakes up it works. Once it "sleeps" then wakes up lights NEVER come back on. If I turn widget off/on the same thing recycles. Works once than fails.
I've got to agree with the OP. Since we don't have a nice physical home button, it would be nice to get this thing lit up so we can see. I'm always in a dark environment and I keep hitting the 'back' instead of the 'home' key.
While we're at it, I like to know who the genius is that decided the location of the power button. It's almost impossible to push the button without squeezing the volume buttons. If they come out with a Infuse2 with the power button on the top, I'll switch in a second.

These sorts of issues (both the OP and the power button placement) are easily avoided if you actually go to a store and play with a phone instead of ordering online.
While I do agree that those two issues could have been handled better, I also understand that we're never going to get a perfect phone. So you live with what you like best.
My external speaker is on its way out I guess from overusage. you have to hit the phone to make it work again.
Does anyone here fix this and how much

same thing happens to mine, i have to tap it to get it to work, but that only works sometimes. and even though its under warranty, I cant return it because i have a little ding in one corner.
I followed the instructions from the link found in post #3 and the speaker hasn't cut out anymore. Although it appears a bit daunting at first to be pulling the phone apart, it really wasn't too bad. It was well worth the effort to get rid of such an annoying issue....thanks for the post.
no sense is telling a big long story. I woke up this morning, put my phone in my pocket, went out to my car to plug it into aux, and when i tried to turn the volume up, THERE WAS NO VOLUME BUTTON!!!
Gone. Forever, probably. I'm talking with a Verizon tech rep over the phone and they said this might not be covered under Defect and might have to be replaced through Asurion. I call bullsh*t on that. I'm going to try and find where that button is and take the phone into a Verizon store to prove that this wasn't from dropping it or anything.
Watch out for your volume buttons, folks. they're pesky little things....
UPDATE: Okay... so it just pops back in. solid hold and no issues, but now i'm a little concerned... I've never heard of anyone else having that same issue, but if it happens again, does anyone know of a good route to go for getting a replacement.

I thought about that and I don't think the Gore would hold with the constant rocking if the switch. I also don't think it would hurt it. The switch is held in place by two tiny prongs on with side that both look perfectly fine. It looks like the switch might have been pulled out by a stray thread from my pillow (I use my phone as an alarm and just lay it next to my head).

Lol its not a big deal. Just buy a new one online, and watch a teardown video and stop at the volume button and do the opposite of what they do

My power button got snagged on the edge of a case I was taking off last night and came off. I found it on my desk when I got home today and stuffed it back in the hole. All is well so far...
Yeah this happened to my power button too, but i was like watching a youtube vid and flicking the button and felt it pop out, simply pop back in and hasnt fell out since.
My volume button also came off. I'm still not positive how it happened but I think it was when I was removing the case to put in the sd card. This was the third day I had the phone so I went back to Verizon and talked to them. They said they don't have parts but offered to replace the phone. They were out of stock on the one I had but said they would call or email when more came in. That night I found the cat playing with the button on the floor of my office and stuck it back in. I have had no issues with it since even though I chance cases on a regular basis depending on need or whim. Verizon did call several days later and offer to do the trade which I told them I didn't need any more.
Never heard of this. I change my case on occasion as well. I will have to be more careful when doing so. Thanks for the heads up.

My power button actually popped out last night. I was taking off the case because the phone locked up on me and I had to remove the battery. I removed my case and heard something loose, looked in the case and the power button was sitting there. I am looking for a case now that covers the buttons so i do not lose them at some random point.
I've noticed a few times when my phone vibrates and its pretty much flat the screen sometimes rotates. Not sure if this is a normal thing happening with most phones, I'm assuming the vibrate motor is confusing the accelerometer somewhat.
You can see a video of it happening below. The phone is flat against the table. Vibrate is set at 63 which I believe is close to stock. It happens on 50 too.
youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-iuo7zsbCj8&feature=youtu.be
Could someone else try this? The app is free. Just switch to auto and set it to something like 0.999 and repeat. Obviously make sure auto rotate is enabled

I've always found the auto rotate on android a bit over sensitive, just trying to figure out if this might be a fault with mine.

Yes, I used the test your android app and vibrate on short bursts. I think camera lens is tilting the phone. It was on a flat desk.

Yeah when it vibrated while laying flat the screen would auto rotate in no particular direction.

Old thread, but it happens to me when I'm playing some games. Vibrates and the screen flicks upside down, then back to proper orientation. I'm holding it in my hands and it's not totally flat either, so it's really getting thrown out of whack for a moment, then re-orients. Doesn't happen in every game, doesn't happen for every vibration, but it happens enough to be annoying.
