Vibrate causing screen to auto rotate - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've noticed a few times when my phone vibrates and its pretty much flat the screen sometimes rotates. Not sure if this is a normal thing happening with most phones, I'm assuming the vibrate motor is confusing the accelerometer somewhat.
You can see a video of it happening below. The phone is flat against the table. Vibrate is set at 63 which I believe is close to stock. It happens on 50 too.
youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-iuo7zsbCj8&feature=youtu.be
Could someone else try this? The app is free. Just switch to auto and set it to something like 0.999 and repeat. Obviously make sure auto rotate is enabled
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.anthonyquarella.vibratetester
I've always found the auto rotate on android a bit over sensitive, just trying to figure out if this might be a fault with mine.

Its done it to me before when my phone was laying on my bed charging

Mine rotates after a few seconds. Normal?

When it vibrated?

Yes, I used the test your android app and vibrate on short bursts. I think camera lens is tilting the phone. It was on a flat desk.

Ahh sorry was trying to quote the other guy on my phone but screwed up. Thanks for letting me know. my phones in a case and it does the same.

When vibrating?

Yeah when it vibrated while laying flat the screen would auto rotate in no particular direction.

Old thread, but it happens to me when I'm playing some games. Vibrates and the screen flicks upside down, then back to proper orientation. I'm holding it in my hands and it's not totally flat either, so it's really getting thrown out of whack for a moment, then re-orients. Doesn't happen in every game, doesn't happen for every vibration, but it happens enough to be annoying.

Bumping this thread. I have been facing this issue for a while now. Did anybody find a fix for this??

Anyone knows a fix for this? It seems to be a hardware issue. Did you guys send to technical repair?

Ignore calls when pulling phone out of pocket

I searched but couldn't find anything. Every time I get a phone call and pull my phone out of my pocket, I think I am sliding the slide up and ignoring the call. Is there a way to prevent this from happening?
Sent from my HTC Inspire 4G
I have this problem too. What I think happens is that the phone can detect my legs through my pocket. My phone is always facing down in my poclet so when I pull it out the upwards motion against my leg rejects the call. I don't like to face my screen on the outside because I'm always bumping into things with my phone in my pocket. Plus it just feels weird the other way.
I determined the exact same thing. I have the exact same reason you do to. I'm hyper nazi with my phone screen.

You could turn your phone so the bottom of the phone is facing your feet so you can pick up the calls when you pull it out of your pocket. LoL
Yeah that's exactly what I have decided is happening. I tried putting it in upside down, but then I have to flip it and plus I forget to put it in that way. I was looking for a setting like "turn screen on when receiveing a call" but I could not find anything close to it. I don't know what to do about it, but it is super annoying.

There's WidgetLocker in the market. Allows you to change the lock screen. It replaces the stock lock screen. I tried it, but not loving it. Its customizable also.
Heres a video review
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0DrRuw69qc
you can change it to the AOSP lockscreen but then your alarm clock won't work, so you will have to get a new one from market (granted this is only if your rooted).

Touching all over the screen?

I'm not sure what causes it but a few people have this issue was another thread awhile back. only outcome was turn off screen and back on and it went away.
I do turn off the screen, but it comes right back after about 5 minutes.

i used to have this fairly often but it's been a while now. i would fix it by wiping down the screen really well, leading me to believe that it might have something to do with grease or something that gets on the screen. not positive tho..

Well, now that i have installed some mods and other stuff it seemed to have stopped. Don't know why the mods would affect it... I will wipe it down though just to be safe.
It's just the way it is - as it's winter now, and it's cold, it happens to me and my friend all the time, when we are using the phone outside. Screen off and on and it's working for another 30 seconds
yea when its cold outside mine does this as well +4C and lower. I took it apart and re seated the connectors it made little to no diff. when its warm i have no issues at all.
Could also be something on the screen itself - even a screen protector that gets damaged could cause an issue.
Also a case could cause the problem - I've had similar issues with my case/screen protector interacting with the screen.

The same thing is happening to me. I thought I was going nuts! But yes, when it's exposed to cold temperatures (35 degrees or so and lower), the screen can develop a mind of it's own. Kind of sucks in Wisconsin!

I have had this problem with the both the new Q LTE I received when the Q LTE launched, and also with the refurb unit I have received from Sprint.
Is there an explanation of the issue and a fix?
Should I swap it out at the Sprint store for another refurb?
Thanks.

Bad Proximity Sensor?

Is anyone else having an issues when on a call to someone you take it away from your ear and look at your phone and the screen doesn't come back on. I have to hit the power button to make the screen wake up. I'm all stock (4.4.2) with unlocked bootloader. I m trying to see if this is a hardware problem where I need to RMA or software problem.
Mine works perfectly well. Are you sure you don't have anything that might be affecting the proximity sensor, like smudges or a screen protector?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
No, I don't have any screen protector not any smudges. I saw similar issues on other phones and someone said to clear data and cache on the phone app so I don't know if that will work or not.

What time out do you have your screen set to? Sounds like it's simply locking after the designated time.
I've noticed the screen turning on and off occasionally when talking. Almost like the sensor isn't sure if I'm holding it to my head or not but then I do hold it away from my face.
I have the same issue...
I can't hang a call because the screen simply don't turn on when I remove my phone from the ear.
In add at this issue, seems like the proximity sensor turn off the backlight screen only.
When I finish a call, I found the clock screen opened, in my case the settings screen of advanced clock widget...
It's really annoying...
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Do you guys have a screen protector applied by any chance? Everyone had this issue with the nexus 4 because the sensor is really sensitive and picks the protector up, not letting it turn the screen on. Try removing a section of the protector where the sensor sits, this will fix your issue.
Surprisingly, I don't have this problem
Team Nexus 5 sucks. Underpowered battery for a 5inch 1080p screen that is non-removable. Weak generic antenna that drops signal. Worst speaker of any device on the market. Cheap plastic build.

I have it on 15 seconds. Shouldn't that feature be bypassed when a call is in progress so that the proximity sensor is usable. This is the first phone that I've had that has done this to me. On all others the proximity sensor stays live even after the predetermined sleep time.
After 15 seconds you're screen is simply turning off as you have set. Mine does so after 1 minute, which is my screen time out setting.

During a call shouldn't the screen timeout be bypassed then go back to the default setting once the call has ended? That makes much more sense to me.

This seems to be the built in functionality of the phone and not a bug. I can't really say if one way is better then the other but I just turn the screen off during calls now.

Touch screen responsiveness problem?

Well this is weird. This morning I woke up and grabbed my G from next to my bed and the touch screen is being all slow and not responsive. I can't swipe left or right without doing it very slowly and deliberately. Same thing with bringing down my notification drawer.
Its making the phone near unusable. Even to type this all out I couldn't use Google keyboards swipe typing feature and have to hit each individual button really slowly.
Anyone know what could be causing this?

Install this and see how it behaves https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=multitouchpro.tests&hl=es
Thanks for that useful little app. It registers all my fingers fine, and its good if I swipe slowly, but if I swipe too fast it loses my finger for a second, which I guess is why I have a problem swiping.
I have no idea what's causing this still though since its been working fine for the past month.

Have you tried turning it off and on again?
Do you by any chance have the charger plugged in while doing this? (My nexus 4 screen acts that way when I connect the wall charger)
Have you tried resetting it?

Same here, part of the screen is unresponsive, except if you move your finger very slowly.
I have the problem described by OP if I am charging with a high ampere charger. It is solved by me by turning the screen off and on after unplugging it.
I forgot to update. The problem just kind of fixed itself over a few hours. I took it to work and it was still having the problem, and then I took it out of my pocket a few hours into my shift to check a text and it was working like usual.
I dunno. Magic I guess.

Guy who did a waterproof test on the Moto G encountered the same issues you described. As the phone dried out the screen slowly came back to life and became responsive again.
I suspect that you have moisture egress into the device, it could cause a strange capacitance differential affecting the digitiser, or even just a short.
Have you used the phone, in shower room, in pocket while exercising. In rain. Taken it from cold outdoors, into very warm indoors. All these things can cause moisture to condense inside the device.
If it happens, the symptoms will reduce as the phone completely dries out...

this behavior happens to me with stock keyboard in whatsapp, after star typing and pressing the "a" key in loop, press the home button and start multitouch test (YAMT) and the screen area that is not responding is where the "a" key is located....
after a while the screen start to response in a normal way...
i tried swift keyboard and guess what.... the same issue again....
this is weird...
note: try to remove the grip shell
Solved,
Okay so I had this issue just now and i got worried, but there is nothing to worry about. The problem is in the charger, use a different charger
my 2 have done this a couple times and I think they were charging at the time. I unplugged the charger but no change. Then I removed the silicone cover I put on and it immediately worked fine both times I did it. I did not turn phone off or reboot. It did not start this trick until I put the covers on. Covers barely touch the screen on the sides. When I replaced cover it still worked until the next time it became unhappy with the cover. Anybody else...................
Update-just checked my other phone. I removed cover w/o unplugging and it did not restore it. Unplugged charger and it was fine. Almost seems like both are contributing to it. more research necessary..........
Maybe the phone just wants to be fondled???????

Update or bad screen?

Hey people
Got my smart watch about 4 days ago and it was all good until tonight and now for some reason i can't see the clock anymore unless i press the power button :S i could have sworn it had a low light mode and the clock was visable ok but since tonight i can't see the time unless there's a light pointing straight at the watch. I hooked it upto the service centre thing and updated it through that but hasn't helped.
am I going mad here and just seeing things? :S
EDIT: i also noticed when i turn it off i get some weird colours appearing in the clockface some pinks/purples. i don't understand it was ok a couple of hours ago and it's been on my wrist the whole time :S
Did you try to reset the watch? Also our you have any custom clocks installed, remove them. As after reset, Sony smartwatch app will reinstall them on the watch, once the watch and the phone are connected.
On your watch, go to settings and tap reset watch.

Just to make it clear, you are not talking about the low power mode right? No backlight, but can be still seen by people in ambient light??? Maybe you should take a picture of the watch so we can clearly see what is going on.
At night my sw2 turns of the screen completely. But when I MOVE the watch it turns on the clock on the display. I think it has an accelerometer that turns off the screen when no movement is detected.

It is a feature to save battery when it isn't worn.
I am more curious as to the "watch (display) turns on from moving it". Does the SW2 have an accelerometer? My watch display doesn't kick on when I move it. Or was this a feature of the earlier SmartWatches?

I believe SW2 does have an accelerometer. Put your watch on a table, leave it untouched for while, screen completely turns off. Not even the low power watch mode is displayed. But once you move it, low power watch comes back on (without the backlight). I observed it many times when it was charging and when left at the bed side table.
But it is not utilized for backlight function. That is a missing feature people are asking for. But I don't really need it. Just like a regular watch, I press a button to turn the light on when I can't see it in the dark.

Wow... I didn't even notice the screen going completely black after sitting for a while. I am still on watch honeymoon, and either the watch is on my wrist or turned off and on the dresser. But sure enough, it does go into a deeper "sleep" mode and wakes up when I pick it up. Nice!
I do see that having it wake to the backlit mode would be nice but it would seem to kill the battery since when worn it would be in more constant movement. Unless they tuned the accelerometer to only wake when a more significant motion happens.

Yeah the previous iteration of smartwatch from Sony did not have always on watchface and it was a necessity. And to see the time you had to turn on the display. One way was to double tap on the watch screen to wake it up. Another way was to light up the screen by lifting your arm and turning the watch towards you. But the second way never really worked reliably.
But I don't think SW2 needs that. As we already have always on watch with great readability even in places where there little light.
