Cincy xt720 work with T-mobile SIM? - Milestone XT720 General

Will the cincinnati bell Motorola Milestone xt720 work with a T-mobile prepaid SIM with the monthly4g plan?

If you get it unlocked let is know how. CBW is notorious for their unlock policies.
Also XT does not have 4G radios, fyi.

Hi DXM147, I am currently using a Cincy XT720 on T-Mobile. It was not an easy process to get it unlocked (won't drag you through the Cincy-Bell conversations). I used a company called SwiftUnlocks (www.swiftunlocks.com or swiftunlocks (at) gmail.com). I believe the cost was $18, it came with a money-back guarantee and the code was sent to me in 2 days. I've had no problem with the unlock and it's continued to be unlocked even after numerous ROM flashings (thanks XDA!).
And from what I've read about the T-Mobile pre-paid plans (I've only looked at the Walmart/T-mobile $30/mo plan), the plans work fine on the XT720. I'm currently using one of their Even More Plus plans so I can't say for sure that it works with the prepaid, only very very likely.

Well, it depends on your definition of 4G. ;-) If you believe T-mob's and Cincy's marketing departments, they both have 4G, or as I like to call it, FauxG. The XT720 does work with T-mob's FauxG plan, I get HSPA+ coverage where I am and I've received speeds up to 5.6Mbps (Downstream) and 1.1Mbps (Upstream).
Let me know if you have any problems with your phone DXM.

[Q] Will this thing work on att?

I am tied into a crappy AT&T contract for the next year or so, but I really want one of these things. If I buy one off contract on ebay, will it work on at&t if I stick my sim card in it?
I'm not 100% sure but I could swear that I read somewhere that it does not support att bands.
But even if it did you would still have unlock it lol
Sent from my G2x running Bionix 2 with the power of Trinity.
Yup
It would work once u get it unlocked via an unlock code. But as said above, your 3g might not work. You will only be getting edge.
Yes the G2x will work just fine on Att. I live in a very rural area where all there is is edge an i use my G2x every day on the Att network as a roaming phone. my account is with tmobile but they have no coverage in some of my traveling area but i just use the network seach an it finds att an i have mostly full bars reception!! Gives me a smile i get to roam off of Att free of charge since they did me so crappy when i had a moto phone!
it will work on AT&T but only 2G (edge), no 3G o HSPA+. See here; http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/27/t-mobile-g2x-lacks-quadband-hspa-shatters-dreams/
It was advertised as quad band, but in fact, is not. I bought one unlocked the day it came out thinking it was quad, and it picked up EDGE only. Been getting sick of ATT crap phones though, so I took phone back to Best Buy for refund, called ATT and paid my ETF, then went down the street and opened up a tmo account with G2x at Costco. With the wifi calling feature, I have no regrets whatsoever. Best $300 ETF I've ever paid!!

Sensation 4G out for Bell tomorrow, Whose picking up one up?

As the title states, its out in Canada tomorrow from what i can see/been told. Hopefully the phone was worth the wait =3.
Thinking about it. Anyone know if BestBuy will let you pay full out for one with no contract unlike the atrix
Will be getting one from either wirelesswave or Tbooth tomorrow off contract, and will then unlock and use on Rogers.

Called Best Buy, they said they had it and it was $549, I said you have it now? they said yep. I said it's $549? they said yep, I said okay, hold it for me I'll be right in, they said okay... I went and they said they couldn't sell it to me, the skew wasn't taking or something like that. I said I just called you... just a dumbfounded look on their part. I hate incompetence.
Anyways, I'm guessing their computer knows that the official release is tomorrow so it's not allowing the sale.

The TMO version of the phone supports both the AWS frequencies and the UMTS frequencies. Does anyone have any idea if this is the same with the one Bell is releasing? I'm looking to put this phone on WIND and would prefer to buy it within the country rather than from the outside.

you need the TMO or an unbranded for working on AWS, most others arent compatible
not to mention how easy it is to get a TMO S4G in canada, or just by driving across the border
Thinking of going out to my local best buy and futureshop to see if they will in fact sell one on no contract... Anyone have any luck doing this?
I just walked into the source and walked out with a bell sensation. Unlocking now for use on rogers. No issues no need to setup a bell account.

You got it off contract? Ugh this sucks. I got my Atrix through best buy with the PEP program and the wifi signal strength/call quality are horrible and I just got the phone May 26th, but since I got GingerBlur on the phone, I don't see how I'm gonna be able to exchange it without em noticing something...different with the phone.

I happen to work at Best Buy Mobile, and if you restore a stock rom and mess with around with a root explorer, you should be able to mess up the phone enough for them to exchange it with said PEP. The guys there don't EVER notice anything subtle, and I doubt you should have any problems
With it unlocked, will it get Rogers 3G? I'm assuming yes as HSPA+ bands are 850/1900 like Rogers.

So in other words, no information whatsoever. Lazy HTC listed quad band GSM but forgot to include the 3G bands in the specs.
We can probably assume it's UMTS 850/1900, possibly also 2100 for roaming. No AWS. The only Big 3 devices to include AWS have been the pentaband Nokias.

Is this goodbye to the XT720?

So I was looking at my carrier yesterday to check on something with my bill and saw that Cincinnati Bell Wireless is no longer carrying the XT720 anymore. Not even being offered as a refurbished model. Hellmonger was lost b/c his XT broke and his carrier gave him an HTC Penache as a replacement.
I did some looking around and Videotron and FIDO are no longer selling it, Wind has it still for sale (check website for details). Not sure about any other carriers because frankly I don't know anymore really, but might want to check yours.
Just total speculation on my part, but maybe Google dropped support for all the "obsolete" phones to make way for their new crop of super-phones. More speculation that Motorola got pissed that CBW gave customers Root Permission with their 2.2 upgrade.
If everyone is dropping this phone, then we are a dying breed in this forum, but then why all the new Korean 2.2's?
Just letting you know what I have found. As long as my phone is working and I don't have to replace it, I'll be around. Hope most others will too.

http://www.fido.ca/web/page/portal/Fido/Smartphones
Edit:::: Took out WIND $ b/c billing is not the point of this. It was that the XT720 is being dropped by some carriers and to check yours just in case you may have insurance/warranty issues.
XT720 is the last of an old abandoned platform (sholes--the original Droid). The Droid is now 2 years old and most of the original Verizon Droid owners are due for hardware replacements (which Verizon's Nexus Prime seems to be targeting). From reading the git commit logs in Motorola's kernel source for XT720, the Milestone XT720 was intended to be a T-Mobile device. But of course all the other manufacturers started coming out with dual-cores, etc and Motorola was caught with it's pants down trying to milk sholes to death. When T-Mobile passed that was probably pretty much the nail in the coffin and upgrade/development was canned and Motorola looked to sell it for what it could. Then Motorola split and Motorola Mobility decided the XT720 wasn't worth any effort for bug fixes either esp. since Atrix and Xoom were both tanking and Bionic had to be re-engineered. Seriously, why would Google give a ****? Android's in growth mode--people stuck on 2.1 are a smaller and smaller and smaller fraction of Android users every day. Google *never* cares about small fractions of their users. I doubt Google will have any real control or influence on Motorola for at least a year. Nightmare: Motorola adopts Google's "legendary" customer support policies.
@Woodrube
i think you mis-read the website, read again
http://shop.windmobile.ca/ProductCa...ls.aspx?id=Motorola+XT720(WINDCA)&color=green
it's still at $400 minus whatever in store discount
the $59 is pay by instalment, which they charger you on a per month basis until you pay off the $400
and FIDO Canada never carried this phone as far as i know, is not even compatible frequency wise
Regardless of whether it is $59 or $400 it seems that this phone is being dropped by carriers. And I did misread that Fido carried it. Sorry about that. I thought that I had seen below some member's avatars the Fido emblem, but maybe not.
Just giving a heads up as if we have to "replace" our phones, they probably won't do an XT for XT. All i can say is check your carrier in case something happens and you have to turn it in for repairs or some other reason.
Edit: Seeing a whole bunch of unlocking services for XT's on Fido. Scam since it doesn't work on Fido?
Yea Cincinnati bell dropped it a couple weeks ago. So I jumped on the nexus s train for a great deal of $100. I couldn't be happier. Now I'm FREE of the locked bootloader. Woo hoo!!!!!!!!

Back to the XT720 service issue, as long as it's a trade up, when they do a service exchange, i see no problem in that.
but a trade down, would really suck
at this point i think it's only Cincinati Bell that is dropping it off, and Tmobile USA

I don't think T-mobile USA ever carried Milestone XT720?
In North America, I believe the only carriers to sell the XT720 are or WERE Videotron, Cincinnati Bell, and WIND Mobile. All fairly small companies, hence the reason why the XT720 was abandoned by Motorola. If T-Mobile had picked it up though, we probably at least would have seen a real froyo.

Yup, just the way it is in North America
when cincy bell refused to unlock my xt, that was the last straw. i decided id never buy another phone from them and i would only buy tmo unlocked phones. when i bought my mytouch 4g 6 months ago, i realized how inferior the xt really was.
if you can wait to get another phone, do so later this year or early next year. tmo will be getting the sgs2 and the htc amaze 4g
there's no comparison it's completely 2 different kind of beast, 3G vs 4G, that itself gives away the huge generation gap difference
Apparently the CBW essurance insurance warehouse still has plenty of the Xt's in stock. They are shipping me one to replace my sisters. Sucks Arse! lol. They should be running out soon though we can only hope.
wow, no wonder i never got 3G ever on my phone cause I'm on fido. but I'm not using a data plan anyways so it doesn't matter right.
I was sorta surprised to see this topic, cause I thought the XT720 was done for long ago. Look at the phones that are out as of now. It can't compare anyways. Even the zero dollar phones from Samsung LG and HTC are a lot better than the stock XT720 experience. The wildfire S is especially great for newbs. Its cheap and lag free almost.
I still support this phone strongly though. i wish they made some sorta sequel...maybe Moto will surprise us. I don't get why they don't make one like the droid 2 and 3...

So let me ask you this. See that you are local (CBW user) and have a Tmo MyTouch4g. Are you using that with CBW sim card and getting full E, G, 4G use? Whenever I am out of town, my phone always reverts to ATT signal. I know they use different frequencies, but I always thought CBW's parent was ATT (or may that is there go-to backup signal). If I wanted to buy an unlocked phone, I am wondering if I shoudl get an ATT or Tmo. I thought it would be ATT but if you are using a Tmo then maybe I am wrong.

Well, CBW was Cincinnati Bell (80%)+AT&T Wireless (20%), but then Cingular bought AT&T Wireless and Cincinnati Bell bought the 20% from Cingular. Then Cingular changed their name to AT&T Mobility. Interesting trivia, Cincinnati Bell was also never part of Ma Bell.
I remember all that now. Ah Ma Bell. Sometimes I long for the old days when monopolies were rampant with their excellent customer service and product advancement. Psych!!

[Q]: Unlocking Infuse to access other networks?

I just moved to NC and get absolutely **** AT&T service. I hear Verizon works best in my area, so I'm wanting to switch to Verizon but not at the cost of buying a brand new phone when I have my beloved Infuse, and the deposit.
I actually have NOT rooted my Infuse because I liked the stock so much, saw no need to. I did have a rooted Galaxy S, as well as a rooted Nook, so I'm not a complete noob.
I'm just nervous about unlocking my phone to possibly hook it up with Verizon. Can you tell me how this works? After unlocking are you sure it'll be 100% to use with Verizon?
Anything else I need to know? How's your mother doing?
I don't think the infuse will work with Verizon. Verizon uses cdma and infuse is a gsm phone. How's tmobile over there? It'll work but with slow data speeds.

Ugh, eff. This is going to suck. Tmobile is shiz, too. I was really hoping to avoid having to spend $200+ plus whatever security deposit requirements. I've been with AT&T over 5 years.
Grr.
Idk infuse maybe compatible with cdma, I've seen the option to use it in a special menu somewhere, its regularly set for cdma/gsm so it maybe able to use Verizon but I'm no developer so I'm not to sure

You could try switching to Credo, which uses sprint's towers and you wouldn't lose any money.
They will buy out your at&t contract if you switch to them, so you don't have to pay at&t early termination fees. If you sign their contract, you can also get the sprint sgs2 For $200 and just sell your infuse to cover that cost. So you would have to drop some money at first but get it all back.
I've been considering doing this because Credo spends their money on things like lobbying against sopa/pipa, whereas at&t is really into censoring the uses of our phones.

If service sucks in your house, look into getting a used Microcell from Ebay or Craigslist. On principle I hate the fact I have to use my own broadband connection, buy my own device, and still have my minutes and data usage count against my monthly alottment but that's the way AT&T plays. If it's the entire area you are in then maybe a carrier change is in order.
The Samsung Infuse is a GSM phone. It does not have the capability to connect to CDMA networks (Verizon, Sprint, and any of the MVNOs using Sprint or Verizon's network).
If unlocked, you can use any SIM from another GSM carrier and make voice calls. You will also be able to use Edge (2G) data coverage from any GSM carrier.
In the US, the two largest GSM carriers are AT&T and T-Mobile. They use different 3G frequencies which means using a phone originally for AT&T on T-Mobile only allows you 2G data speeds and vice versa (in general... though some T-Mobile smartphones can use AT&T's 1900Mhz band)
Hope that helps. Unlike Europe and Asia, our phones are by and large locked to their respective carriers even if you unlock them because of the technology difference and frequency differences.

[Q] Which MVNO is the least expensive

I'm a verizon user, but my father wants to replace his old Nokia feature phone with something newer. He's a tracfone user, and as I understand it their BYOD plans are CDMA only. You can get a VZW Moto G today, but I believe they won't unlock the device for use on other networks for 6 months.
So, I can get a GSM version, but am unfamiliar with GSM MVNO's. Which MVNO using AT&T has the least expensive (potential) plan. I don't think he's ever sent a text, and I don't see him using data on the device much, but I think he would appreciate the camera and google maps. An unlimited plan is pure overkill for him. He's the definition of the minimal user.
Probably Straight Talk Sims.

Actually I've been looking into this recently myself. I'm currently with Tracfone but I'm thinking about upgrading my phone (Moto G is one strong consideration).
Straight Talk is one option but it really depends on needs. If he's a light user, PayAsYouGo may be the best. If he's consumes quite a bit of minutes, prepaid may be the path. I would look at H2o or Airvoice also. With either you could possibly get a light user down around what TF cost (depending on the plan used there). They both also offer monthly prepaids less expensive than ST. However, I think ST is 4G and the two I mentioned may be only 3G if that matters. Both H2o and AV use AT&T GSM so that would be a consideration. Of course, Verizon and AT&T are very large providers but you would have to see what works in his area.
And yes, you are correct. The new CDMA Moto G will not work on TF. And I seen some stated that will be that way for at least one year.

Why won't it work on Tracfone's BYOP plan? All you should have to do is call them and let them transfer everything. Jus t because it's locked to Verizon doesn't mean you can't flash it to someone else I think... TF operates on Verizon as well.

Verizon controls what phones are allowed on their network; not TF. Page Plus wireless (which is also a Verizon MVNO provider) customers have the same issue. They want the Moto G but it's the network owner who sets the rules.
You'll find it easier to use higher end phones on MVNOs who employee T-Mobile or AT&T (GSM). That's why I suggested the ones I did. And by no means is the list limited to Airvoice, H2o, Straight Talk. There are more choices. Just not Verizon.

Can I get a Moto G that will work with Ting? I know the Boost mobile version is on the Sprint bands, but it isn't listed on Ting's whitelist.
AFAIK Straight Talk has pretty much stopped selling AT&T sims (only T-Mo ones now) from what I've read recently, the same with Net10 and other AT&T-based MVNOs because it seems like AT&T is really pushing for its Gophone pre-paid as an MVNO competitor (and withdrawing its support for MVNOs it was selling access to gradually). They've revamped their prices recently to be more competitive, and that's the reason I've switched from my old provider (Virgin) --- I'm currently on the $60 unlim txt/voice/2GB data plan (cheaper when buying refills through resellers).
The cheapest Gophone plan for smartphones is $25 / mo for 250 mins unlim domestic text & MMS (and a set of countries), no data included.
If you're not averse to T-Mobile, they have a fantastic low-minutes high data plan ($30 a month for 100 mins, unlimited text & data (throttled at 5GB) but I'm unsure if you can use a Moto G you've not purchased from them with the plan.
