Is this goodbye to the XT720? - Milestone XT720 General

So I was looking at my carrier yesterday to check on something with my bill and saw that Cincinnati Bell Wireless is no longer carrying the XT720 anymore. Not even being offered as a refurbished model. Hellmonger was lost b/c his XT broke and his carrier gave him an HTC Penache as a replacement.
I did some looking around and Videotron and FIDO are no longer selling it, Wind has it still for sale (check website for details). Not sure about any other carriers because frankly I don't know anymore really, but might want to check yours.
Just total speculation on my part, but maybe Google dropped support for all the "obsolete" phones to make way for their new crop of super-phones. More speculation that Motorola got pissed that CBW gave customers Root Permission with their 2.2 upgrade.
If everyone is dropping this phone, then we are a dying breed in this forum, but then why all the new Korean 2.2's?
Just letting you know what I have found. As long as my phone is working and I don't have to replace it, I'll be around. Hope most others will too.

Edit:::: Took out WIND $ b/c billing is not the point of this. It was that the XT720 is being dropped by some carriers and to check yours just in case you may have insurance/warranty issues.

XT720 is the last of an old abandoned platform (sholes--the original Droid). The Droid is now 2 years old and most of the original Verizon Droid owners are due for hardware replacements (which Verizon's Nexus Prime seems to be targeting). From reading the git commit logs in Motorola's kernel source for XT720, the Milestone XT720 was intended to be a T-Mobile device. But of course all the other manufacturers started coming out with dual-cores, etc and Motorola was caught with it's pants down trying to milk sholes to death. When T-Mobile passed that was probably pretty much the nail in the coffin and upgrade/development was canned and Motorola looked to sell it for what it could. Then Motorola split and Motorola Mobility decided the XT720 wasn't worth any effort for bug fixes either esp. since Atrix and Xoom were both tanking and Bionic had to be re-engineered. Seriously, why would Google give a ****? Android's in growth mode--people stuck on 2.1 are a smaller and smaller and smaller fraction of Android users every day. Google *never* cares about small fractions of their users. I doubt Google will have any real control or influence on Motorola for at least a year. Nightmare: Motorola adopts Google's "legendary" customer support policies.

@Woodrube
i think you mis-read the website, read again
http://shop.windmobile.ca/ProductCa...ls.aspx?id=Motorola+XT720(WINDCA)&color=green
it's still at $400 minus whatever in store discount
the $59 is pay by instalment, which they charger you on a per month basis until you pay off the $400
and FIDO Canada never carried this phone as far as i know, is not even compatible frequency wise

Regardless of whether it is $59 or $400 it seems that this phone is being dropped by carriers. And I did misread that Fido carried it. Sorry about that. I thought that I had seen below some member's avatars the Fido emblem, but maybe not.
Just giving a heads up as if we have to "replace" our phones, they probably won't do an XT for XT. All i can say is check your carrier in case something happens and you have to turn it in for repairs or some other reason.
Edit: Seeing a whole bunch of unlocking services for XT's on Fido. Scam since it doesn't work on Fido?

Yea Cincinnati bell dropped it a couple weeks ago. So I jumped on the nexus s train for a great deal of $100. I couldn't be happier. Now I'm FREE of the locked bootloader. Woo hoo!!!!!!!!
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App

the only other Milestone that works in FIDO, is not a XT
http://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_milestone-3001.php
so, yes it could very well be a SCAM
there are too many of those bogus unlock places, a lot of people using Samsung phones got tricked
Back to the XT720 service issue, as long as it's a trade up, when they do a service exchange, i see no problem in that.
but a trade down, would really suck
at this point i think it's only Cincinati Bell that is dropping it off, and Tmobile USA
http://find.t-mobile.com/controller...primary&Ntt=motorola&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial
from the Canadian side Vidéotron

and Mobilicity
http://mobilicity.ca/products/
seems to have dropped it as well

I don't think T-mobile USA ever carried Milestone XT720?

In North America, I believe the only carriers to sell the XT720 are or WERE Videotron, Cincinnati Bell, and WIND Mobile. All fairly small companies, hence the reason why the XT720 was abandoned by Motorola. If T-Mobile had picked it up though, we probably at least would have seen a real froyo.

@AllGamer
I am running fido on the XT

Hi
This why I have stopped messing around cm7 finally went back to cm6 1.2 like it the best and I have sold all my extra milestone xt.
Been working on mobile windows again don't know if will stay with droid.
Cincinnati bell know about xt issues sorry their just snakes in the grass
I will unlock this phone very soon.

Locked means carrier locked right? I don't think any of the phones sold in Singapore are locked. We can use any carrier we want.

Yup, just the way it is in North America

when cincy bell refused to unlock my xt, that was the last straw. i decided id never buy another phone from them and i would only buy tmo unlocked phones. when i bought my mytouch 4g 6 months ago, i realized how inferior the xt really was.
if you can wait to get another phone, do so later this year or early next year. tmo will be getting the sgs2 and the htc amaze 4g

there's no comparison it's completely 2 different kind of beast, 3G vs 4G, that itself gives away the huge generation gap difference

Apparently the CBW essurance insurance warehouse still has plenty of the Xt's in stock. They are shipping me one to replace my sisters. Sucks Arse! lol. They should be running out soon though we can only hope.

wow, no wonder i never got 3G ever on my phone cause I'm on fido. but I'm not using a data plan anyways so it doesn't matter right.
I was sorta surprised to see this topic, cause I thought the XT720 was done for long ago. Look at the phones that are out as of now. It can't compare anyways. Even the zero dollar phones from Samsung LG and HTC are a lot better than the stock XT720 experience. The wildfire S is especially great for newbs. Its cheap and lag free almost.
I still support this phone strongly though. i wish they made some sorta sequel...maybe Moto will surprise us. I don't get why they don't make one like the droid 2 and 3...

So let me ask you this. See that you are local (CBW user) and have a Tmo MyTouch4g. Are you using that with CBW sim card and getting full E, G, 4G use? Whenever I am out of town, my phone always reverts to ATT signal. I know they use different frequencies, but I always thought CBW's parent was ATT (or may that is there go-to backup signal). If I wanted to buy an unlocked phone, I am wondering if I shoudl get an ATT or Tmo. I thought it would be ATT but if you are using a Tmo then maybe I am wrong.

Well, CBW was Cincinnati Bell (80%)+AT&T Wireless (20%), but then Cingular bought AT&T Wireless and Cincinnati Bell bought the 20% from Cingular. Then Cingular changed their name to AT&T Mobility. Interesting trivia, Cincinnati Bell was also never part of Ma Bell.

I remember all that now. Ah Ma Bell. Sometimes I long for the old days when monopolies were rampant with their excellent customer service and product advancement. Psych!!

What the heck was I thinking????

Walked into a Verizon store so my girlfriend could get a new phone. As the salesman was helping her out, he started up a conversation with me about who I had service with and what phone I was using.
Like a gun slinger pulling out his shiny nickle plated revolver I smuggly produced my fully hacked and modded Samsung Captivate. He was seriously impressed with it. Especially that I had a 2.2.1 ROM loaded on it with all the bells and whistles.
Then the fun was over and he hit me where it hurt....."How much are you paying each month for your service?"
To shorten up this story I will just skip to the part where he offered me a service plan on my 3 lines (2 of which are Captivates) that was almost too good to be true, and before I new it, my poor cappy was now nothing more than a hopped up mp3 player, and I was the new owner of a Droid X.
Its been 2 days, and I have yet to have a conversation where the phone doesn't shut down in the middle of it. I have flashed the latest and greatest ROM over on the Droid X side but it still reboots at will. I have found numerous people with the same problem after searching Google, but no fixes for it.
Coincidentally, the second droid is doing the same thing.
To be honest, even without the reboot issue, the DX just doesn't compare to my Captivate in any way.....well except for one. The GPS is stinking flawless on the droid.
I want to drive by the Verizon store and throw all three phones through the window and go back to AT&T begging them to take me back without either of them charging me out the yahoo in penalties.
Does anyone know if I can switch back without any issues or is Verizon and AT&T both gonna stick it to me? I made the purchase 7pm Sunday the 16th.
Its worth mentioning that two numbers have been ported over to Verizon and one will not be for another week or two. So technically I still have an account with AT&T.
Thanks in advance for any replies.
At&t should be able to restore your numbers on your account. Basically everything goes back to the way it was before you ported. Then you should get credited back for the ETA fees if they already billed you for it. There may be reactivation fees though...
Doing so would also automatically cancel your Verizon account so you would need to return all the equipment back to them otherwise they'll charback your credit cards for the retail prices of the phones.

I am actually very tempted to switch to Verizon solely due to all the scrap and issues that ATT has given me in the past. And that their 4G network promises to bring only mediocre speeds is not appealing either.
I mean, I love my Captivate, but I don't think that ATT's service is worth the money or hassle. If my workplace wasn't paying and forcing me to stay, I would have jumped ship 4 years ago.

You should have 30 days to go back to Verizon and tell them thanks, but no thanks.
Verizon gives you 30 days to try out new phones. all you have to do is return it and they will charge you a pro-rated amount for the service that you used, nothing else. No etf's or any penalties. And I'm sure AT&T would be more than willing to take you back, especially if you are coming back from verizon.
No lie, I have heard horrible things about DROID. My buddy has replaced his 3 times.

Verizon's theoretical speed is upwards of 15Mbps last I checked. AT&T's 3G coverage seems to be pretty shoddy for me; often when I'm travelling, I am forced to EDGE; it doesn't really bother me that much, but means my internet is heavily crippled. For customer service, ATT's bricked 4 of my phones and asked me to pay. I don't think it gets much worse than that; at least I managed to force them to upgrade my RAZR V3 to a V3XX after it just died within 2 months, then to send me a new one when they bricked that while unlocking it, then sending me a new LG Shine after bricking that while unlocking it when I owned it. Worst was when they bricked my Bold 9700 when they told me to update it after my data got spontaneously wiped.
AT&T has no good phones save for the Captivate and the iPhone (both of which are debatable at this point), so I have no clue what your point there is. Any of Verizon's Droids destroy both.

I talked to the verizon rep that sold me my phones. He replaced the dx's (which have worked flawlessly btw), and told me to give it a couple of weeks before I made my move.
I have to admit, I'm liking the new coverage. I'm not getting the 2 and 3mgs download speeds I was getting on my cappy, (which I could only get in very few areas) but I am getting about 1.5mgs on the dx almost everywhere with verizon coverage.
The dx isn't a elegant a my cappy and I have had to jump through a couple of hoops to get a custom rom installed, but it is just as functional, and the gps has been spot on.
I miss my captivate pretty bad, but as the initial shock is wearing off, verizon doesn't seem do bad.
I still have a couple of weeks to decide and my cappy is still sitting on my dresser just incase.

Just to correct everyone about the "30 days" to return/cancel your service with Verizon. On Sunday the 16th (the day the OP purchased his phone) Verizon implemented a 14 day (not 30) day period to avoid the ETF.
I know this because I work at a national retailer who sells Verizon phones.
That explains why the rep said "just give it a couple more weeks." Wow do I hate people who try to screw others over (the rep in this case).
"You may return or exchange wireless devices and accessories purchased from Verizon Wireless within 14 days of purchase. A restocking fee of $35 ($70 for netbooks and tablets) applies to any return or exchange of a wireless device (excluding Hawaii)."
http://www.verizonwireless.com/ReturnPolicy.shtml
I know 2 people with Droid X's and TBH they are horrible. I'm not saying SGS phones don't have their own unique issues but the "official" 2.2 for the Droid X is seriously just bad. They both have random shutdowns/reboots and they are sluggish compared to SGS phones. The one lady I know used my cappy and didn't understand why her droid was was so much slower...at everything. I told her that's what she gets for buying a phone because it's "Cool" because they have a commercial for it ever other commercial break. Also did you look into if you get a discount through ATT for your job? I get 20% off my bill (5 phones, 3 cappys, iphone3g, crap flip phone) for a company I haven't worked for for like 4 years now.
As for the Streak, I burned all my Jinco's 15 years ago and bought jeans that fit. I don't care how great it supposedly is or isn't, a 5" phone is to big to fit in a normal pair of jeans comfortably and not look retarded.

That might be true Mike but my money says you'll be pulling your hair out trying to port 2.3 over to the Atrix with its locked up boot loader when the Bionic is to be released with it already.
And its almost a sure bet you can tack on about 6 to 8 months on AT&T's promised release date on any phone they advertise.

This is correct. He told me this Tuesday. I bought the phones Sunday. So I have until the next saturday to make up my mind.
Just so you know, Verizon's is CDMA which means it will have weaker call signal and stronger data signal. The signal bars only report your data signal, not your voice call signal. It can be very deceiving.
Also, you cannot use data while using the phone to talk to someone. So you can't say, "Let me look it up right now." Because it will just say "No Data Connection."
if you decide to stay with verizon, make sure you check your bill each month. vzw likes to add bogus fees that most of their customers don't even notice. this happened to both me & my gf (on separate accounts)
First Verizon's return policy is 14 days after that etf is 375$ no matter where u r n contract, 2nd they don't have a 4G phone that has 4G speeds nor do any carrier. ATT speeds are greater at 3G than all competitors except tmo areas that are using their upgraded 3g network they claim is 4g and they r barely faster but they have a small area their coverage covers without losing Singal since they "changed their 3g".
And who would do the droid x over the cappy? That sales man must be good at what be does because stock the cappy kills droid x in all benchmarks and speed tests for network since Verizon 3g network is the slowest of all major carriers. Do a speed test bet it don't do more then 1.2Mbps down when I can get 5Mbps on my cappy with ATT.
ATT 4G when it is rolled out will do 4-5x faster then what it does now which is suppose to be 7Mbps x 4 so around 28Mbps down is insane... my phone is already faster then a lot of dsl providers...
Anyway not flaming just wanted to put my 2cents in with facts. My brother owns a droid x its not bad but cappy is one nice piece of hardware

Nope they weren't - it was confirmed that the Mobi N1 came unlocked. Don't know about Videotron's, but I presume the same.
Still, Bell/Telus/Rogers just don't seem like the kind of companies to allow themselves to sell something without a SIM lock. Which is why I'm asking about the NS.
I can personally confirm the Telus NS is unlocked (sim) using both a virgin and Rogers Sim.

I stopped by a local Telus store last night hoping to play with a demo, but they claimed they didn't have any and no demo. The manager told me they won't have any available for sale until April 15th. I then stopped by a BestBuy and they didn't have a demo and was told they don't have any stock but would sell me one outright from Telus stock if they had it. Futureshop has some, but they said they don't have the outright/no contract SKU in their system (bogus info as they want a contract sale). Other carriers are not selling until next week, even if they have stock.
This really is a messy launch...I don't mind waiting but the complete lack of dissemination of information, inconsistent sales information, and staggered launch dates is not very flattering for Google. And I can only imagine how customers will react to this sloppiness.

You can't buy from robelus without either a multi-year contract or severely over-inflated prices, and you can't buy from anyone else without paying full price up front. Nobody loses a dime by buying from the wrong carrier.... except for the carrier who lost the sale.
Note about these phones... as I understand it, there are TWO versions being sold in Canada... the AWS version (sold by Wind, Mobilicity, Videotron), and the PCS version (sold by robelus). It is BETTER TO BUY THE AWS VERSION!!! The PCS version will NOT WORK with Wind, Mobilicity, or Videotron. The AWS version will only not work with BELUS, it will work with everything else.

Don't be so biased...the AWS version is only useful to those on 1700/AWS band, so obviously it's the one to get if you're with Wind or the others. If you're with Bell or the others then the obvious choice is the NAM version. And the 850/1900/NAM version also works in Europe just like the AWS version as both have 2100 radios.

Buy the phone that matches your carrier's frequencies. There are plenty of these to go around. If you switch to another carrier, trade it. Or hold out for something like the LG G2X which will be quad-band UMTS 850/AWS/1900/2100 *and* dual-core.

I hope you where not the guy behind me who was told "No, you can't have one" by the sales rep while i was unboxing mine. I felt really bad for that guy.
Also keep in mind that not all telus stores are the same. Look in your phone book for Telus and go to one of those stores, not on of the "Telus by XXXXX". When you get into a store owned and operated by Telus, you can get a lot more done.

Sensation 4G out for Bell tomorrow, Whose picking up one up?

As the title states, its out in Canada tomorrow from what i can see/been told. Hopefully the phone was worth the wait =3.
Thinking about it. Anyone know if BestBuy will let you pay full out for one with no contract unlike the atrix
Will be getting one from either wirelesswave or Tbooth tomorrow off contract, and will then unlock and use on Rogers.

I'm just figuring out how to exchange my Atrix for one. If i had known the Sensation was coming out this soon, I would've waited.

Called Best Buy, they said they had it and it was $549, I said you have it now? they said yep. I said it's $549? they said yep, I said okay, hold it for me I'll be right in, they said okay... I went and they said they couldn't sell it to me, the skew wasn't taking or something like that. I said I just called you... just a dumbfounded look on their part. I hate incompetence.
Anyways, I'm guessing their computer knows that the official release is tomorrow so it's not allowing the sale.
Got my T-Mobile version up and running on WIND two weeks ago. Hooray for unlimited data!

also reaping the benefits my friend
loving this fone since TMO launch, i highly recoommend it.
i just hope bell didnt swamp the fone with bloadware like TMO did :/
The TMO version of the phone supports both the AWS frequencies and the UMTS frequencies. Does anyone have any idea if this is the same with the one Bell is releasing? I'm looking to put this phone on WIND and would prefer to buy it within the country rather than from the outside.

you need the TMO or an unbranded for working on AWS, most others arent compatible
not to mention how easy it is to get a TMO S4G in canada, or just by driving across the border
Thinking of going out to my local best buy and futureshop to see if they will in fact sell one on no contract... Anyone have any luck doing this?
I just walked into the source and walked out with a bell sensation. Unlocking now for use on rogers. No issues no need to setup a bell account.

You got it off contract? Ugh this sucks. I got my Atrix through best buy with the PEP program and the wifi signal strength/call quality are horrible and I just got the phone May 26th, but since I got GingerBlur on the phone, I don't see how I'm gonna be able to exchange it without em noticing something...different with the phone.

I happen to work at Best Buy Mobile, and if you restore a stock rom and mess with around with a root explorer, you should be able to mess up the phone enough for them to exchange it with said PEP. The guys there don't EVER notice anything subtle, and I doubt you should have any problems
With it unlocked, will it get Rogers 3G? I'm assuming yes as HSPA+ bands are 850/1900 like Rogers.

So in other words, no information whatsoever. Lazy HTC listed quad band GSM but forgot to include the 3G bands in the specs.
We can probably assume it's UMTS 850/1900, possibly also 2100 for roaming. No AWS. The only Big 3 devices to include AWS have been the pentaband Nokias.

[Q] Bell or Telus???

Im currently with Telus ironically using a Bell SGS2. Ha.
My data speeds are not as fast as they used to be and I'm considering switching to bell.
Has anyone switched recently and found things better over with Bell?
No Rogers suggestions please... They're being boycotted
bell networks = telus networks.
they share it. (telus builds out in the west, bell in the east)
and only someone without a brain would switch from telus to bell. (unless telus suddenly only starts selling only feature phones or something)
idk whos worse, rogers or bell.
telus: NOT TOO BAD
rogers: MEEEEEEEEGA MEGAAAAAAA TERRIBLY NIGHTMARE BAAAD
bell: MEGA MEGA HORRIFICLY EXTREMEM BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD.
this is based on their HORRRRRRRRRRRIBLE customer service.
and telus is mostly the one to introduce some kind of competition in this country.
early upgrade
2 year contract on select phones
etc etc.
i'd go with koodo if i were you. they're under telus = good network (same as bell) and pretty good customer service.
they have data saver add-on which is pretty good value (better than anything out there other than new entrants which have no coverage and not compatible with your phone).
they always introduce competiition. (all virgin does is follow suit)
they have affordable plans
they are data connect
koodo is probably your best bet. i'm with them right now (with a nexus s) and am quite happpy
Ok please ignore Clearnet nut-gargler over here;
First off, the most obvious reason to switch from Telus to Bell is Bell gets better devices. That's it. Telus is JUST NOW getting some decent stuff Android wise, whereas Bell's already had the Sensation, SGS2, Raider, etc and Telus is constantly playing catch-up. Last to get a Galaxy phone, last to get a dual-core device, last to go LTE. They're always the last to do anything. Also, Koodo is next to useless if you want a GOOD subsidized device. $150 towards a phone isn't helping anyone, especially with REAL devices, please for the love of Christ ignore this terrible, terrible advice.
Moving on. I switched from Telus (just over 6 years, 2 contracts) to Bell in May of last year because a friend of mine sold me an iPhone 4 with Bell and I wanted the Incredible S, and I had been recently employed by them so the bill discount would be really good. So far they've been pretty damn good to me. I've never had any service issues, customer service isn't any better or worse than anyone else. (excluding Rogers, obviously. Their customer service is bar none the worst in the business, from a consumer or employment perspective.)
Bell's billing support is a little ****ty, it seems to take them quite a while to figure things out that they should already know concerning credit checks, credit caps, or deposits. Other then that, they've been good to me. We'll see how useful they are come upgrade time, but as of right now, they're decent. Bell seems the same as Telus to me, just with much better device selection, I find. They seem to hop on to the newer stuff faster than Telus, ie. getting the Atrix first (mistake, but at least they tried), SGS, SGS2, LTE Raider, etc.
I've always understood that they shared towers and such. But Bell seems to be getting the jump on Telus with the LTE Network.
I've had that in the back of my mind as well.
Any thoughts?
If you want LTE I would recommend you wait until Telus gets their network up and since your already a Telus customer you can probably get a retentions deal out of them if they get to keep you
FYI i recommend you take a look at mobilesyup because they are really up to date on Canadain stuff
Maybe I'm just going to suck it up and wait it out. Thanks for all the input.
Agreed with first responder...
BELL SUCKS THE WORST. They called me a liar when I told them I had service problems. They put me on hold for a half hour. They hung up on me. I got tonnes of dropped calls. My texts would go out garbled. Sometimes I wouldn't even receive texts. The list goes on and on. TERRIBLE SERVICE.
Rogers is sorta bad. Always some sort of problem with the bill.
Telus is alright. Still expensive but best of the big 3.
To put it another way
Telus is the way you feel every day
Rogers is a slight cough
Bell is AIDS, herpes, the flu, redeye, a persistent rash, vomiting, and diarrhea all rolled into one
I went with Mobilicity since they're 55% cheaper than my Telus $55/month plan was. Data is a bit slower, but for what I'm paying I really can't complain . FYI T-mobile phones work on Mobilicity.
I've also tried: Fido (was OK)
Have friends on: Virgin (hate it), Koodo (their tab thing rips you off)
@glitch zero
you cant deny koodo has pretty good value compared to most options in canada.
and he has the sgs2 so theres no need to get another one on the tab..
and telus is NOT the lat to get everything everytime. before bell released the sgs2 first, they were the ones who had the worst selection. it was only recently they've started to get good phones. but no matter how good their selection is, none of it is worth it if you have to go to bell for them...
they are essentially the same to me. both terrible but good networks.
Telus.
Bell **** on your face with customer service.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A

Virgin vs Sprint

Hey all -
This is a new area for me, as I've mostly stuck to Verizon and TMobile, so..
The girlfriend wants to get her own phone now - off her family plan. She has a 'dumb phone' now, and wants an android phone. (Go, her, for not mentioning an iPhone!) Her money's tight, working in retail, so she was looking at Virgin Mobile's smallest plan. Unfortunately, most of their cheaper phones have very limited ROMs - if any. Heh. And the systme ones are suck back in the GB or worse, earlier timeframe. I know the Virgin's owned by Sprint - and I was looking at swappa.com - there's a few good phones there for relatively good prices.
Are Sprint phones allowed on Virgin Mobile? (Googling reveals a press release earlier this year, but no additional details..)
Cheers -
Mike.
The problem with CDMA networks, is you can't get phones to work on other carriers legally at least... Even tho they are owned by Sprint... And not ever phone will work after trying...
