For any of you who have bought a Nexus S *in Canada* from any of the carriers - Bell, Telus, Rogers, Fido, Koodo, Virgin, Mobilicity, Wind, Videotron...
Can you confirm that your phone came SIM-unlocked out of the box? Or does anyone have signs of a carrier lock?
all Nexus phones are unlocked

We'd like to hope so. But I am asking owners of these specific models, bought from CDN carriers, to confirm that fact once and for all.
it will be in violation of the google / nexus brand if they locked
google will not let telcos tarnish their image
Actually when Nexus one was sold by videotron and Mobilicity they were locked.

Nope they weren't - it was confirmed that the Mobi N1 came unlocked. Don't know about Videotron's, but I presume the same.
Still, Bell/Telus/Rogers just don't seem like the kind of companies to allow themselves to sell something without a SIM lock. Which is why I'm asking about the NS.
I can personally confirm the Telus NS is unlocked (sim) using both a virgin and Rogers Sim.

Was told repeatedly by the Telus salesman that the phone was locked. He allowed me to try my sim and it got a signal so I'm pretty sure ALL nexus S phones are unlocked despite what Rogers/Telus/Bell are claiming. They just automatically respond "the phone is locked" because they're trained sheep.
I can confirm that the Nexus I purchased today at Future Shop on Rogers was completely unlocked.

And they've probably been told to spew that disinformation so people will buy from their own carrier rather than somewhere else at a cheaper price, and to prevent users from travelling with a prepaid SIM card.

I stopped by a local Telus store last night hoping to play with a demo, but they claimed they didn't have any and no demo. The manager told me they won't have any available for sale until April 15th. I then stopped by a BestBuy and they didn't have a demo and was told they don't have any stock but would sell me one outright from Telus stock if they had it. Futureshop has some, but they said they don't have the outright/no contract SKU in their system (bogus info as they want a contract sale). Other carriers are not selling until next week, even if they have stock.
This really is a messy launch...I don't mind waiting but the complete lack of dissemination of information, inconsistent sales information, and staggered launch dates is not very flattering for Google. And I can only imagine how customers will react to this sloppiness.

You can't buy from robelus without either a multi-year contract or severely over-inflated prices, and you can't buy from anyone else without paying full price up front. Nobody loses a dime by buying from the wrong carrier.... except for the carrier who lost the sale.
Note about these phones... as I understand it, there are TWO versions being sold in Canada... the AWS version (sold by Wind, Mobilicity, Videotron), and the PCS version (sold by robelus). It is BETTER TO BUY THE AWS VERSION!!! The PCS version will NOT WORK with Wind, Mobilicity, or Videotron. The AWS version will only not work with BELUS, it will work with everything else.

Don't be so biased...the AWS version is only useful to those on 1700/AWS band, so obviously it's the one to get if you're with Wind or the others. If you're with Bell or the others then the obvious choice is the NAM version. And the 850/1900/NAM version also works in Europe just like the AWS version as both have 2100 radios.

Having been a Fido customer on my AWS Nexus One for several months before Vancouver's first AWS carrier launched... I would not wish on any phone geek the torture of owning a an awesome new "superphone" that feels so snappy and delightful in so many ways... but can't access the 3G speeds they're already paying for.
Buy the phone that matches your carrier's frequencies. There are plenty of these to go around. If you switch to another carrier, trade it. Or hold out for something like the LG G2X which will be quad-band UMTS 850/AWS/1900/2100 *and* dual-core.

When i went in on Thursday night, I was told the same thing. They had stock, but it was not in the system. This is true for consumers. Fortunately, I'm a corporate customer and a quick call to my sales rep got everything sorted out, turns out the business sku's ARE in the system. After about 1/2 hour, i walked out of the store with my phone.
I hope you where not the guy behind me who was told "No, you can't have one" by the sales rep while i was unboxing mine. I felt really bad for that guy.
Also keep in mind that not all telus stores are the same. Look in your phone book for Telus and go to one of those stores, not on of the "Telus by XXXXX". When you get into a store owned and operated by Telus, you can get a lot more done.

Looking for a good online shop in the US that sells unlocked phones.
I know Expansys is great, but their selection of phones for the US is abysmal.
(Try finding an unlocked phone that supports US 3G! Ha!)
Any other REPUTABLE shops?
eBay is a very good choice for online shops
there is cellhut.com also, but i haven't bought anything from them.
Remember to put the url tags
Cell Hut

Not bad - like how they at least declare which phones are US 3g and which aren't.
They do have the Magic and the Hero but both are overpriced by about $100.
No Acer Liquid (which is the phone I have my eye on, now that it is out)
The best place that beats any other onlines store in the US or EU that I've used is Clove.co.uk.
The reason that you're not finding ANY phones with US 3G is because no manufacturer sells any phones unlocked in the US market. (Except for a select few phones) For that try BestBuy.com or go to a Best Buy in person. They are expensive and they only support AT&T 3G.
The point is, finiding an Unlocked phone you want with US 3G will be tough. Rumors are that the Sony X10 will have T-Mo US 3G. Until Manufacturers start making Quadband 3G unlocked phones you will be stuck with edge. Right now that's the price you pay for buying a phone that the US market won't see ever (or for atleast 6 months) and not being under contract. I think that's still a deal.
]
So if you really want 3G, sign another contract and get a phone from the carrier. Right now that's the only way. Don't yuo wish the US used EU's Carrier System here and their 3G bands?
Fix: Let me fix something. Looks like they need to make phones that have 5 or 6 3G Bands in order to be true 3G World phones. They would be 800/850/900/1700/1900/2100
1900/2100 for Europe/Asia
850/1900 for AT&T
800/850/1900/2100 for Japan but mainly 1900/2100
and 1700/2100 for T-Mo US
900 for Australia and other.
So if you want an unlocked 3G phone make sure it has the 850/1900 bands if you have AT&T or the 1700/2100 if you use T-MO. Just because they state the phone has US 3G does not mean it will work on your carrier.

I know.
Which is why I am looking for 850/1900/2100 phones.
The primary reason (if you ask me) why you don't see many unlocked phones being sold is twofold:
1. Price
2. Most stores are fvcktards: they don't even know that they are selling a 'crippled' phone even if you point it out to them.
Good examples are the 3 phones I have been looking at recently: HTC Hero and Magic as well as the Acer A1.
The majority of stores will happily sell you a EURO phone without telling you that it won't work. The ones that have the NAM version, will sell it to you for $100-$150 'over price'.
I am even willing to give them some leeway, since Hero and Magic are carrier bound in the US and HTC might not be allowed to ship the NAM version to US stores (making it more difficult/expensive for stores to sell them [not sure if that is legal though]).
What pisses me off big time (and proves that stores are absolute fvcktards) are phones, like the Acer A1, which are not bound to a carrier and will never get sold in the US unless they are sold as unlocked phones. Those stupid dickheads at the stores can't even sell that phone with the proper model in the proper market and the morons at the manufacturers spend millions on advertising/publicity but then can't even get products into stores!
I agree ALL GSM phones should have quad-gsm and quad-3G frequencies.
So last but not least it is also the phone manufacturers fault, since they should build quad-GSM/3G phones!

I wouldn't blame the stores on anything. Yes they know they are not selling a NAM 3G compatible device but it will work on edge. It's not their fault that it only woks on edge in NA. Blame the manufacturer.
Phones like the G1, and magic you can get with US bands but they are only T-Mo US 3G bands. (I have yet to see an AT&T one Besides the phone from Rogers) I have not seen an Unlocked Hero with NAM bands. If there was one It'd be in my pocket.
Again, Most of the unlocked phones that you are seeing that have NAM 3G are either T-mobile only or AT&T only. So you still have to be catious when you buy the phone. The US sellers that sell unlocked phones are selling the exact same EU/Asian unlocked phones that the EU sites are selling. Why? Because that's all there is to sell. And typically the US sites sell the phones at a higher price because they can.
Clove.Co.UK I got my Topaz the day it came out and it cost me $520 USD shipped (From the UK to CO). Other US based sites had the phone for $580+ excluding shipping.
My final word is that we all should send E-mails to HTC Worldwide stating that we want phones with True World 3G compatibility. We refuse to buy carrier branded phones and need the extra bands for personal and buisness use when traveling abroad. Even the EU and Asain Versions should come with "World 3G" bands. They do travel to the US and having 3G work here benifits productivity. Heck even users of branded US phones travel to EU/Asia for buisness and not having their 3G effects their productivity which in turns slows down world productivity and in the end hurts the world economy because someone had to wait 40 more seconds to DL something.

I absolutely blame the stores (as well as the manufacturers) and you should too! The HTC Magic and the HTC Hero are not only made with US 3G bands ... you can even buy them unlocked in certain stores (usually for $100-$150 more than the EU version). Do your research!
(e.g. unlocked Hero w. at&t 3G: http://www.importgsm.com/product.php?productid=660&cat=0&page=1)
But it's not only phones like the Magic/Hero (which after all are sold in the US carrier bound) - the same is true for phones that are not bound to a US carrier (e.g. Acer A1, Acer F1, certain Nokia phones, ...).
There is no reason why US (online) stores (or even the manufacturers) can't sell those unlocked at full retail price.

Dude Research. That is not an Unlocked Hero. That is a Branded Rogers and/or Telus Hero. Which is LOCKED. You have to buy it from Telus/Rogers Unlock it then use it on AT&T. If a store online wanted to sell it Unlocked they have a right to sell it to you for $150 more than an unlocked EU version.
Just look at the facts. This is AMERICA. The phone companies will not sell you a phone they carry and your carrier doesn't. It's called competition and Greed. They lock you in to a contract and "make" you use their phones that they want to carry.
In EU carriers don't care. I'll use US carriers as an example of how they work and we should to. I have T-Mo. I want the HD2 and only AT&T carries it. I would walk into the AT&T store and say I wan't the HD2 unlocked. I pay full price pop in my sim and go. Easy as that.
But the US carriers want you locked down. Hence the reason the companies are using different 3G bands than the rest of the world. It's stupid so don't blame the stores that just sell the phone or the manufacturers then. Blame AMERICA.
Mebe you should do the research and READ.

There are other more profesional ways to do this. Find them yourself. HTC has no Hero for the US Unlocked or locke. If they did Bestbuy would be selling it. And obviously it only has AT&T 3G which happens to be the same frequencies Rogers uses. Derrrr.

1. All versions of the Sensation so far support the tmobile's AWS 3G band. Also, for those that don't know: AWS = 1700/2100. They put AWS because it's shorter than writing/explaining what it really is.

That wasn't the question though, was it?
He wants to know if T-Mobile US will allow an Asia/Europe Sensation to work with grandfathered T-Zones or web2go data plans. It has nothing to do with the bands. It has to do with T-Mobile's locking down of certain smartphones so that they can't use T-Zones or web2go regardless if they have AWS or not.
Since the phone's not out yet in the U.S., the majority of posters here are from the EU. They have no idea what T-Zones are. For my international friends, it's a legacy dumb-phone plan that allows you to use 3/4G data on an unlimited basis for half the price of the smartphone data plan. He's asking about the European IMEI because if T-Mobile U.S. has it in their database than T-Zones will be blocked.
OP, I'd ask again when more people in the U.S. actually have the phone.
P.S. - Since all the phones have AWS, I'd imagine that HTC provided T-Mobile U.S. with the full range of IEMIs. Just guessing but it makes sense.
Now does the international Sensation get slower speeds than the Sensation 4G? Or is it going to be the same?

should be the same. they're the same phone. only difference I've seen from pictures so far is the US version has 1 extra contact for the back antenna
also 2 things: why did you post this question in 4 different threads? & why do you care about the EU version if you're in the US. I'm pretty sure importing a EU version over to this side of the pond would be way more expensive than buying the US version outright.

Thank you all for your answers, but this is my first thread in XDA. Since this phone is made in China, I can import one from China for less than $600. Would be interesting to see if T-mobile blocks all the IMEIs. I got my dad a Huawei U8150, which is the same as the T-mobile Comet, but T-mobile has no idea what that phone is. So it works fine on the web2go plan. I almost pull the trigger to have my friend in China ship me a sensation, but I'll wait for a couple more weeks.
Because I can get the EU version easier than the US version and wanted to be sure before I placed an order.... that and I was a little drunk
Now last question s about the rom, will the EU be able to have the US rom flashed to it

I just got the HTC Incredible S, which does work on T-Zones/Web2go.
However, if someone does get Euro HTC Sensation, let us know if it works.
i think it should work as long as its not bought from tmobile or does not have the tmobile logo on the front top right of the glass
im pretty experienced with web2go and phones
android phones from tmobile all don't work with tones or web2go
as long as its not from tmobile it will work on the phone
and 3g will for if it has AWS bands
except nexus S because samsung gave all the IDs to tmobile. even the ones that tmobile doesnt sell
i ordered a htc sensation and will get it in about 36 hours
ill let you guys know how it works out

Where did you order it from? Let us know if it is the unbranded version or the Vodafone version. Hi-mobile.net has the lowest price I've seen but I don't know if they are legitimate or not.
Not many ratings for Hi-Mobile.net. I honestly wouldn't trust them.
Integrontech.com- has reviews and seller feedback. $599.99- free shipping.

I bought mine from Negri Electronics because i was watching reviews and this one review from like pocketnow or some pretty good review website said they got it from there and it was the cheapest i could find. it was $625 free shipping. but im from hawaii so i had to pay for the 2day air shipping for $30
As the title states, its out in Canada tomorrow from what i can see/been told. Hopefully the phone was worth the wait =3.
Thinking about it. Anyone know if BestBuy will let you pay full out for one with no contract unlike the atrix
Will be getting one from either wirelesswave or Tbooth tomorrow off contract, and will then unlock and use on Rogers.

I will be getting one, then unlock it to use on Telus
Getting one for sure

Called Best Buy, they said they had it and it was $549, I said you have it now? they said yep. I said it's $549? they said yep, I said okay, hold it for me I'll be right in, they said okay... I went and they said they couldn't sell it to me, the skew wasn't taking or something like that. I said I just called you... just a dumbfounded look on their part. I hate incompetence.
Anyways, I'm guessing their computer knows that the official release is tomorrow so it's not allowing the sale.
Got my T-Mobile version up and running on WIND two weeks ago. Hooray for unlimited data!

loving this fone since TMO launch, i highly recoommend it.
i just hope bell didnt swamp the fone with bloadware like TMO did :/
The TMO version of the phone supports both the AWS frequencies and the UMTS frequencies. Does anyone have any idea if this is the same with the one Bell is releasing? I'm looking to put this phone on WIND and would prefer to buy it within the country rather than from the outside.

you need the TMO or an unbranded for working on AWS, most others arent compatible
not to mention how easy it is to get a TMO S4G in canada, or just by driving across the border
Thinking of going out to my local best buy and futureshop to see if they will in fact sell one on no contract... Anyone have any luck doing this?
I just walked into the source and walked out with a bell sensation. Unlocking now for use on rogers. No issues no need to setup a bell account.

You got it off contract? Ugh this sucks. I got my Atrix through best buy with the PEP program and the wifi signal strength/call quality are horrible and I just got the phone May 26th, but since I got GingerBlur on the phone, I don't see how I'm gonna be able to exchange it without em noticing something...different with the phone.

I happen to work at Best Buy Mobile, and if you restore a stock rom and mess with around with a root explorer, you should be able to mess up the phone enough for them to exchange it with said PEP. The guys there don't EVER notice anything subtle, and I doubt you should have any problems
With it unlocked, will it get Rogers 3G? I'm assuming yes as HSPA+ bands are 850/1900 like Rogers.

So in other words, no information whatsoever. Lazy HTC listed quad band GSM but forgot to include the 3G bands in the specs.
We can probably assume it's UMTS 850/1900, possibly also 2100 for roaming. No AWS. The only Big 3 devices to include AWS have been the pentaband Nokias.

So I was looking at my carrier yesterday to check on something with my bill and saw that Cincinnati Bell Wireless is no longer carrying the XT720 anymore. Not even being offered as a refurbished model. Hellmonger was lost b/c his XT broke and his carrier gave him an HTC Penache as a replacement.
I did some looking around and Videotron and FIDO are no longer selling it, Wind has it still for sale (check website for details). Not sure about any other carriers because frankly I don't know anymore really, but might want to check yours.
Just total speculation on my part, but maybe Google dropped support for all the "obsolete" phones to make way for their new crop of super-phones. More speculation that Motorola got pissed that CBW gave customers Root Permission with their 2.2 upgrade.
If everyone is dropping this phone, then we are a dying breed in this forum, but then why all the new Korean 2.2's?
Just letting you know what I have found. As long as my phone is working and I don't have to replace it, I'll be around. Hope most others will too.

Edit:::: Took out WIND $ b/c billing is not the point of this. It was that the XT720 is being dropped by some carriers and to check yours just in case you may have insurance/warranty issues.
XT720 is the last of an old abandoned platform (sholes--the original Droid). The Droid is now 2 years old and most of the original Verizon Droid owners are due for hardware replacements (which Verizon's Nexus Prime seems to be targeting). From reading the git commit logs in Motorola's kernel source for XT720, the Milestone XT720 was intended to be a T-Mobile device. But of course all the other manufacturers started coming out with dual-cores, etc and Motorola was caught with it's pants down trying to milk sholes to death. When T-Mobile passed that was probably pretty much the nail in the coffin and upgrade/development was canned and Motorola looked to sell it for what it could. Then Motorola split and Motorola Mobility decided the XT720 wasn't worth any effort for bug fixes either esp. since Atrix and Xoom were both tanking and Bionic had to be re-engineered. Seriously, why would Google give a ****? Android's in growth mode--people stuck on 2.1 are a smaller and smaller and smaller fraction of Android users every day. Google *never* cares about small fractions of their users. I doubt Google will have any real control or influence on Motorola for at least a year. Nightmare: Motorola adopts Google's "legendary" customer support policies.
@Woodrube
i think you mis-read the website, read again
http://shop.windmobile.ca/ProductCa...ls.aspx?id=Motorola+XT720(WINDCA)&color=green
it's still at $400 minus whatever in store discount
the $59 is pay by instalment, which they charger you on a per month basis until you pay off the $400
and FIDO Canada never carried this phone as far as i know, is not even compatible frequency wise
Regardless of whether it is $59 or $400 it seems that this phone is being dropped by carriers. And I did misread that Fido carried it. Sorry about that. I thought that I had seen below some member's avatars the Fido emblem, but maybe not.
Just giving a heads up as if we have to "replace" our phones, they probably won't do an XT for XT. All i can say is check your carrier in case something happens and you have to turn it in for repairs or some other reason.
Edit: Seeing a whole bunch of unlocking services for XT's on Fido. Scam since it doesn't work on Fido?
Yea Cincinnati bell dropped it a couple weeks ago. So I jumped on the nexus s train for a great deal of $100. I couldn't be happier. Now I'm FREE of the locked bootloader. Woo hoo!!!!!!!!
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
the only other Milestone that works in FIDO, is not a XT
http://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_milestone-3001.php
so, yes it could very well be a SCAM
there are too many of those bogus unlock places, a lot of people using Samsung phones got tricked
Back to the XT720 service issue, as long as it's a trade up, when they do a service exchange, i see no problem in that.
but a trade down, would really suck
at this point i think it's only Cincinati Bell that is dropping it off, and Tmobile USA
http://find.t-mobile.com/controller...primary&Ntt=motorola&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial
from the Canadian side Vidéotron
http://www.videotron.com/service/mobile/appareils/details.do?noAppareil=1014&init=true
and Mobilicity
http://mobilicity.ca/products/
seems to have dropped it as well

I don't think T-mobile USA ever carried Milestone XT720?
In North America, I believe the only carriers to sell the XT720 are or WERE Videotron, Cincinnati Bell, and WIND Mobile. All fairly small companies, hence the reason why the XT720 was abandoned by Motorola. If T-Mobile had picked it up though, we probably at least would have seen a real froyo.
@AllGamer
I am running fido on the XT
Hi
This why I have stopped messing around cm7 finally went back to cm6 1.2 like it the best and I have sold all my extra milestone xt.
Been working on mobile windows again don't know if will stay with droid.
Cincinnati bell know about xt issues sorry their just snakes in the grass
I will unlock this phone very soon.

Yup, just the way it is in North America
when cincy bell refused to unlock my xt, that was the last straw. i decided id never buy another phone from them and i would only buy tmo unlocked phones. when i bought my mytouch 4g 6 months ago, i realized how inferior the xt really was.
if you can wait to get another phone, do so later this year or early next year. tmo will be getting the sgs2 and the htc amaze 4g
there's no comparison it's completely 2 different kind of beast, 3G vs 4G, that itself gives away the huge generation gap difference
Apparently the CBW essurance insurance warehouse still has plenty of the Xt's in stock. They are shipping me one to replace my sisters. Sucks Arse! lol. They should be running out soon though we can only hope.
wow, no wonder i never got 3G ever on my phone cause I'm on fido. but I'm not using a data plan anyways so it doesn't matter right.
I was sorta surprised to see this topic, cause I thought the XT720 was done for long ago. Look at the phones that are out as of now. It can't compare anyways. Even the zero dollar phones from Samsung LG and HTC are a lot better than the stock XT720 experience. The wildfire S is especially great for newbs. Its cheap and lag free almost.
I still support this phone strongly though. i wish they made some sorta sequel...maybe Moto will surprise us. I don't get why they don't make one like the droid 2 and 3...

So let me ask you this. See that you are local (CBW user) and have a Tmo MyTouch4g. Are you using that with CBW sim card and getting full E, G, 4G use? Whenever I am out of town, my phone always reverts to ATT signal. I know they use different frequencies, but I always thought CBW's parent was ATT (or may that is there go-to backup signal). If I wanted to buy an unlocked phone, I am wondering if I shoudl get an ATT or Tmo. I thought it would be ATT but if you are using a Tmo then maybe I am wrong.

Well, CBW was Cincinnati Bell (80%)+AT&T Wireless (20%), but then Cingular bought AT&T Wireless and Cincinnati Bell bought the 20% from Cingular. Then Cingular changed their name to AT&T Mobility. Interesting trivia, Cincinnati Bell was also never part of Ma Bell.
I remember all that now. Ah Ma Bell. Sometimes I long for the old days when monopolies were rampant with their excellent customer service and product advancement. Psych!!
Just read on Androidpolice Cricket are offering a $200 rebate on the s4. So similar price to the Nexus 4

Sorry if this has already been posted
Almost jumped at the offer...but then I remembered Cricket wireless is a CDMA carrier and I want to use T-Mobile, so unless they're selling a factory unlocked phone it would be pointless for me to buy it.

CDMA is typically for US LTE vands. It's what Verizon/Sprint use, and basically it means the phone won't work on GSM netowrks (T-Mobile/AT&T). It's far more restrictive, and you can't just pop in a SIM card and use the phone as you wish.

There seems to be a couple of catches.
-The fine print says that you need to make two auto-bill payments to Cricket wireless, which depending on the plan you pick, is $70-100. It also means you must be on Cricket wireless service for 45 days before you can cancel and use the phone on another carrier, which if it's a CDMA phone, means no T-Mobile/AT&T.
-The rebate offer could be several months before you get it in the mail.
