Are they going to convert T-Mobile into AT&T like what they did with Cingular? Or are they going to leave T-Mobile alone and just "own" them?

Pretty sure T-Mobile will become part of AT&T and we'll just have access to all their additional coverage and what not.

I think that's up in the air but I'm sure what ever they do they are going to be sharing towers. If the deathstar gobbles them up I am sure t mobile plans will get grandfathered. Least that is what Verizon did when they bought ( I think it was alltell)

This will take about a year. We won't see any changes till after a year from now.
And who knows, this might not even happen. Its all in FCC's hands right now.

I always liked T-Mobiles pricing and phones, but their coverage sucked in my area.

Personally I don't think its great news. Wipes out a pretty Android friendly carrier and just makes AT&T bigger, giving them more power to dictate to Google and make us pay through the nose.

AT&T said they are planning on using the T-Mobile network to provide LTE to 95% of americans. The transaction will take a year to complete but 95% of americans sounds pretty damn good. Also most likely you won't see huge improvements because usually where T-Mobile has signal so does AT&T. There are very few areas where T-Mobile has service that AT&T doesn't. I think this is a good move for both companies.

I am tied into a crappy AT&T contract for the next year or so, but I really want one of these things. If I buy one off contract on ebay, will it work on at&t if I stick my sim card in it?

I'm not 100% sure but I could swear that I read somewhere that it does not support att bands.

It would work once u get it unlocked via an unlock code. But as said above, your 3g might not work. You will only be getting edge.

Yes the G2x will work just fine on Att. I live in a very rural area where all there is is edge an i use my G2x every day on the Att network as a roaming phone. my account is with tmobile but they have no coverage in some of my traveling area but i just use the network seach an it finds att an i have mostly full bars reception!! Gives me a smile i get to roam off of Att free of charge since they did me so crappy when i had a moto phone!

It was advertised as quad band, but in fact, is not. I bought one unlocked the day it came out thinking it was quad, and it picked up EDGE only. Been getting sick of ATT crap phones though, so I took phone back to Best Buy for refund, called ATT and paid my ETF, then went down the street and opened up a tmo account with G2x at Costco. With the wifi calling feature, I have no regrets whatsoever. Best $300 ETF I've ever paid!!

As of right now, not possible for 3g data. The phone doesn't have the baseband but there is a group that thinks the phone actually supports Att 3G but is locked down until the merger goes through. Would make sense that Tmo would keep it locked in order to maintain customers as long as possible.

I am totally hoping that ATT comes in, forces a massive switch to their network, and then allows everyone to update their phones inside of the current contracts.
I would get the G2x, keep it as a wifi machine or sell it on Ebay, and be able to get the Galaxy SII for the low contract price.
I want ATT to take over the towers, and give all the old users new hardware to work within the ATT system. And the T-Mobile data costs locked in. Great deal for everyone.
One thing for sure, if ATT comes in, they have to give the same 4G (3.5G++ or whatever you want to call T-Mobile 4G) service to all the G2x owners...one way or the other.
Heck if ATT is not able to finish the purchase they need to pay up 6 billion in penalties. A bunch of new phones to existing user, going out a new contract prices, is easy. Plus ATT has way more solid coverage in my area.

I agree with this. If AT&T forces people into having crippled phones without offering heavily subsidized replacements on their new network then surely there will be an outcry ... with that said we could be getting a great upgrade deal for getting the shaft (but this would be nearly 2 years down the road so its sort of win win)

Several upcoming phones for Tmobile support AT&T 3G bands and it is quoted in several sources that "the bandband for AT&T will be locked until the merger goes through".
AT&T is putting up a pretty big wager guaranteeing it would go through. I don't see why it wouldn't. Sure AT&T would be the only major GSM carrier in the US but there is still plenty of competition (Verizon). Plus larger cities have their own local cell carriers.
They probably would also be subject to leasing out their frequencies to companies like Cricket and Boost Mobile, that piggy back off other carriers towers.
I personally think it is a good idea because there is only so much frequency bandwidth for GSM and having to split it up among different groups creates problems. Not all area's have all the frequencies but once the merger goes through, phones would support all and would be able to connect to anything. This means more signal and bandwidth for everyone.
Sure I dislike AT&T but I did like their service (back before the iFone). It then became over crowded and I couldn't use it at my house. For travel, AT&T > Tmobile. At home, where I am most of the time, Tmobile>AT&T. If they combine, it will be the best of both worlds.

[Q] Infuse on what other carriers?

So I'm in an all out WAR with AT&T right now. Not going to get into anything beyond the fact that their customer service reps treated me like flaming doodoo while i was nothing but nice. Game over
So any who, what other carriers in the USA will my infuse work on? Including the virgin mobile and boost and whatever other cheap unlimited plans out there?

I think it is called Straight Talk, it uses the same frequencies as Att.

Yea I will for sure. but right now at&t has really screwed things up with me. They've treated me like crap and called me names. yes. seriously. and yes i was being nice. long story like i said.
But I'm living in an area with **** service but don't want to switch to verizon....bc its too expensive.
I'd rather be able to keep my infuse and unlock it.
Any other sources you guys can recommend? Google has brought me back here to canadian threads and not much else.

I understand wanting to keep your current phone, but fail to follow that Verizon is too expensive. The calling plans are exactly the same price as AT&T, the 2GB plan on Verizon is $5 more, and you can get 5 GB on Verizon for $5 more than the 4 GB plan on AT&T.

insurance is triple the price, mobile to mobile is Verizon to Verizon, att is any carrier mobile. possible surcharges ect...
depends on your needs and usage I guess.

anyway strait talk is powered by a number of carriers. they use att similar cards, T-Mobile Sims, and also have cdma phones. the sim is locked to the phone. basically the imei is more important than the sim and if you use the sim and sell the phone your sim is deactivated if the phone you buy is reactivated. also many of the phones use other ways to lock the sim. the only phones that the sim is att and compatible with the infuse are $200 Nokia smart phones as far as I know.
supposedly consumer cellular is att. haven't heard of any trying it.

I use less than 2g a month and barely any minutes, their cheapest plan put me with taxes and fees and unlimited texts at over 130$ ...not just a quote from a store that was my old bill in 09. att is about 110 and I switched it to a family plan with a friend so its only about 80 a month now.

Consumer Cellular is AT&T - it's what my parents are using with my old Infuse.
However, Consumer Cellular specializes in very basic no-frills service - they're great if you want a dirt-cheap extremely light-use plan, but at even moderate use they can become very expensive. For example, their highest data plan is $20 for 200MB.
An Infuse on T-Mobile will be 2G-only.

well....honestly....how bad s 2g? bc i don't have the money to get any other phone and the AT&T is most definitely getting canceled. I live in 11931 zip code...what other options do I have?
Unless....well...there is a case opened with AT&T and I, and the only resolution i could come to was to cancel the service. I had the VP of AT&T on the phone earlier (yes its that bad) and he asked if there was any other resolution and I said I believe my only option since i have no service here (and other things that happened) I have to cancel. He said he'll call me back monday.
Is there another phone option that would get better service? I mean I love my infuse and all my pretty bling cases for it so I don't really want to get rid of it...
does the GS2 get better signal and do the cases fit the same? ::crossing fingers::

Switching phones may be the other option if you want to keep at&t. I don't get reception with my infuse in areas my family or friends do have signal in, and they have at&t. GS2 is smaller I believe, well I know the screen is. But don't know about their signals.

hmm...well tmobile does work over wifi and has super green coverage for my area. my step brother has it and when he comes here he has full service on his galaxy. It would only cost me 40 a month for the pay as you go....and thats compared to about 80 a month now...
I don't have a job yet and that would be a better option....but not if my phone is going to suck balls.
Anyone think it will suck the big one being on 2g?

Well back in the day 2g was cool. But I was stuck on it while everybody was getting 3G then 4g, and now that I'm on the infuse, I've been spoiled by the speeds. So yes, "it will suck the big one". You don't want to sell the infuse?

Ehhhh not really. I have all these pretty bling cases (yes I'm a chick its like shoes and pocketbooks) that probably won't fit the galaxy s2...and on top of that I do really like my phone. I just ordered a larger battery for it too.
I also don't see it getting all that much online...maybe 225 for it unlocked if i figured that out...and that wouldn't be enough money for me to get an s2 without a contract for tmobile pay as you go...or wait can you use that phone for pay as you go? because its not in the same section as the other no contract devices. I'm confused about that.
The main thing is to have a phone that works for less money or the same.

Switching to T-Mobile or ATT

New data stats for 2014 are out and it looks like ATT is giving VZW a run for their money with T-Mobile trailing as a close third. ATT data plans are a little cheaper than T-Mobile, but they do not have an unlimited tier, T-Mobile does however and they finance the Nexus 5. From my understanding, ATT supports the Nexus 5, but don't offer financing, so buying it retail from Google or second hand is the only option, which I plan on doing in a few months.
I'm thinking about switching after the holidays and was wondering if the GS3 for VZW is compatible with either carrier's data bands. Has anyone successfully switched to ATT or T-Mobile using the GS3 subsidised by VZW?

Well that sucks, VZW is like communist Russia or something lol.. I would just sell it however its like a year old with some wear.. Doubt I'd be able to get more than $150 for it. I don't mind paying retail, figure switch to a cheaper carrier, keep the GS3 for 4-5 months and save the monthly difference for a new N5.. Guess that's not possible since they use different bands.

Not quite true. You can, but you be stuck on Edge (no HSPA+ or LTE AFAIK). But as previous posters have stated, your best off selling the verizon device and picking up a Tmo one (Most Tmo devices work on ATT and Tmo, Many ATT devices are locked to ATT).
And I would compare Verizon to totalitarian Russia, but message received. =)

None of this matters for those who need all over cell service. I travel all over the midwest, att, tmobile, and sprint all suck for coverage area. If they are good in your area and you dont travel, go for it. You will have little to no rural coverage which also means no data in those areas.

I'd stick with VZW if they still supported nexus devices and weren't trying to lock down everything else, guess there's no incentive for them to do so. ATT has a little over half the amount of towers VZW has with faster data transfer, T-Mobile has about a third and Sprint's LTE is still in infancy.

No incentive indeed. Big red is losing points with me fast.. especially since losing my unlimited data. Sprint's LTE is an absolute joke at this point, but it seems the silver lining is T-mobile's expanding network. If they support your area and you don't need to travel much, an unlocked Nexus 5 on their $30/mo plan is looking very tempting. The 100 minutes a month thing sucks, but there's always voip alternatives.
