[Q] AT&T buys T-Mobile. Can we expect any improvements? - HTC Inspire 4G

AT&T bought out T-Mobile.
Can we expect any improvements?
Discuss.

It's at&t so I am going to say..... no

Are they going to convert T-Mobile into AT&T like what they did with Cingular? Or are they going to leave T-Mobile alone and just "own" them?

Pretty sure T-Mobile will become part of AT&T and we'll just have access to all their additional coverage and what not.

I think that's up in the air but I'm sure what ever they do they are going to be sharing towers. If the deathstar gobbles them up I am sure t mobile plans will get grandfathered. Least that is what Verizon did when they bought ( I think it was alltell)

This will take about a year. We won't see any changes till after a year from now.
And who knows, this might not even happen. Its all in FCC's hands right now.

I always liked T-Mobiles pricing and phones, but their coverage sucked in my area.

Personally I don't think its great news. Wipes out a pretty Android friendly carrier and just makes AT&T bigger, giving them more power to dictate to Google and make us pay through the nose.

AT&T said they are planning on using the T-Mobile network to provide LTE to 95% of americans. The transaction will take a year to complete but 95% of americans sounds pretty damn good. Also most likely you won't see huge improvements because usually where T-Mobile has signal so does AT&T. There are very few areas where T-Mobile has service that AT&T doesn't. I think this is a good move for both companies.

AT&T is becoming self-aware

The network will actually be stronger because of the takeover but what I do foresee is a lack of our current freedom that T-Mobile provides us with its data plan, AT&T clearly likes to limit its customers' options to 2GB and furthermore AT&T seems to going the way Verizon has and invested heavily in LTE technology as opposed to T-Mobile's HSPA+ which leaves us MT4G users dead in the water. I have heard that AT&T was seeking to expand its current HSPA+ network but I'm not exactly sure by how much and whether it runs off of the same bands as the T-Mobile HSPA+ network since their current 3G networks are on different bands.
I am interested to see if they will change their outlook on the way they handle business. BUT IT LOOKS LIKE I MIGHT GO BACK TO SPRINT
Yeah this most likely means sprint for me.
So what's the best android phone coming out soon for Sprint?

Here is at&t trying to become a monopoly again. Most of us left at&t cause of the crap service now we are back. I can't believe it I rather have sprint actually buy T-Mobile then at&t.

"Welcome to T-AT&T. How may we give it to you?"
Yes, I'd like an order of 5 year contracts and a side of carrier specific manufacturers. And a medium "iPhone to T-Mobile" to drink, with extra irony.
"Great and how did you want to pay, first-born or second mortgage?"
Wow you beat me to it lol

Well, I am absolutely not in shock. I work corporate so i had knowledge of talks..but i was under impression we were doing spectrum agreements. Not this bullsh*t. I am NOT happy as I DO work for AT&T but...I know our strictness when it comes to Data Tiering and deposit structuring, etc.
On the network side it will be an advantage as far as coverage goes..but this is bad news for pricing and customer retention..
I anticipate a customer drop the 1st 3 months this is finalized.

Yeah, I'll be one of them. Almost 100% guarantee I'm moving to Sprint. I get a 25% discount with my company anyway. I got 12% with tmobile which was still cheaper but there's no way I'm staying with at&t.

calm down people...we have no idea the details of the merger...no idea how or when it will effect us...and for the most part people that already on tmobile cell and data plans will be grandfathered into whatever they have now
now...i will say im not happy with this news...i was an att customer for over 7 years way back when and i dont want to be one now...but being i just signed a 2 year contract again to get my new phones...im stuck...but im not going nuts yet until i hear what the merger means
EDIT: i just read that the deal still has to be approved by the gov't and will take up to a year for the merger to actually be fully implemented http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2382267,00.asp

Well just read radioshack is kicking T-Mobile out and bringing in Verizon to all stores. I see the end is near i don't understand why people choose the other carriers when T-Mobile gives you the Best bang for the buck handdown. I'm thinking it might be a goodtime to switch carriers before they leave us all hanging. I say that because i read engadget news everyday and there is always bad news about T-Mobile.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA Premium App
How will we be left hanging? Even with the buyout, AT&T will be forced to grandfather all of us and our existing contracts. If we are forced to change anything (plan, device, etc) it would be a violation of contract and we would have an out without penalty. Those of us without a contract have the potential to get screwed sooner. But if that happens, just leave since you don't have a contract anyways.

IMO, the best thing to do is get a new TMO contract locked in for 2 years, so your contract will be stable even if AT&T was to take over tomorrow.

I just jumped ship from TMO. I was on flex pay with no contract with two lines. Sprint gave me $125 credit for each line just for porting my numbers to them. Then on top of that I said I worked at costco and got 23% off my monthly bill. Plus they will give me a free home airwave which is a signal booster/free wifi calling AP. and with the GV integration any call you make is considered mobile to mobile and doesnt deduct from your minutes(if not on unlimited plan)
Sprint's 4g coverage in my area is pretty strong as well.
so for $120(after the 23% rebate) I get 1500 anytime minutes, unlimited texting and 4g on both lines nights and weekends (nights start at 7) truly unlimited data, free mobile to mobile calling on any carrier plus the GV intergration which every call is like mobile to mobile and the free airwave for my house. I couldnt resist I just got the evo 3d but have 30 days and might return it if the GS2 comes out by then and if it's any good

I agree! I Never had any service problem whatsoever. Even if the buyout doesn't happen and T-mobile decided to close their doors, it would not happen for at least 2-3 years as they have binding agreements to provide service to millions of customers. Even that scenario is unlikely considering T-mobile stands to gain $6 billion and a percentage of atat spectrum in the event negotiations go south. There is also reason to doubt what some call ''the inevitable'' based on T-mobile's recent swarm of high end devices, price plan adjustments and advertising. T-mobile has never made as much noise throughout its lifetime in the U.S. as it has within the last 7 months.
Have fun with the dropped calls.

Who shops at Radio Shack? only old people looking for rare batteries for their cordless phone from 1994. This move doesn't affect T-Mobile in the slightest just shows that Radio Shack is struggling. T-Mobile by far has the best signal strength in my area. Sprint sucks you will get dropped calls several times a day. Not to mention you can't talk on the phone and surf the web at the same time....
T-mobile's been solid for me and i can honestly say I have had every major carrier available in the Chicago area in the past few years. Sprint is a close second but their 4G was spotty and while traveling it was almost at 3g speeds.
Were fine, were in contracts (most of us) and if AT&T takes over and tries to change it, itll be an easy way for us to get another new shiny phone from another carrier
AT&T does have the ****test service though, I had a 3GS for 6 months never had so many damn dropped calls. There was 2 city blocks by me I had to avoid when I was on the phone cause it was a dead zone lol while every other carrier had signal there fine
Back when I had my HD2, my tmobile connection was questionable. But since getting and HTC Sensation 4G I haven't dropped a single call yet. The Antenna Design in the Sensation is definitely above the rest. The only thing I don't like is the new data caps on high speed access. I am on 5 GB plan. I called tmobile to ask what do they mean by reduced data speed after I used up my quota and they basically said I would be on edge til the end of the month. Not very cool, but better than paying overages.
Well It's nice to have more than one spot to buy your phone local. Considering where i live best buy mobile don't carry T-Mobile now radioshack won't . I'm down to two places the mall where it's impossible to get a phone before they sell out or walmart. So to some radioshack ain't a big deal but too me it is, i got several phones from them and if it wasn't for them i wouldn't have got this sensation when it released. The mall sold out in a hour and so did walmart.

I don't buy phones in the store, I use Wirefly or letstalk and save the cash.
Sony Xperia X1i
HTC HD2
HTC Sensation 4G
I bought all of them off ebay with no contract.
I have never had any problems with bad phones from ebay.
These days sellers are pretty honest if there is a problem.
Sensations are going for about $400 each now on Ebay
Many of the phones on Ebay are New in Box too.
I still don't understand why people still think they need to purchase from a retail store. You are better off especially with the Tmobile merger coming up, to buy a phone outright, then get a month to month plan. That way if the network goes to ****, you can switch with no termination fees.

That was a long waste of a process. Verizon and AT&T control 75% of the market. Sprint and T-Mobile USA are too small to survive on their own. They cannot keep pace with the capital investments of the much larger Verizon and AT&T. Sprint is struggling to build a 4G LTE network, and T-Mobile does not even have any immediate plans for one. I am hoping that some big outside investors (Dish Network, Google, etc.) come in and buy out the small carriers and make the necessary cash infusions. As a consumer, I want affordable, nation-wide mobile broadband with high (or unlimited) data caps.
T mobile is fine. Sprint however is in trouble.

Absolutely...the iPhone is not needed for T-Mobile to get customers. the HTC Amaze and Samsung Galaxy S2 are more than sufficient and considerably better phones than the iPhone 4S...maybe 2 years ago, T-mobile needed the iPhone, but not today. I highly doubt the iphone will save sprint or bolster their marketshare.
t-mo usa isnt fine, their owner want out of us market, so someone has to buy them now at an good price or at an fire sale later.
Iphone and lte. The iphone is not a network saving device. A lot of people would still buy the iphone out right and stay on t-mobile network. Most people jump to conclusions assume the deal would go through and left t-mobile.
Lets assume T-mobile starts pushing out windows 8 phones next year and they are as intuitive and intergrated with the desktops.
That will bring in more consumers since its a device that works with already most of your home products.
Lte as of right now t-mobile does not need Lte. The technology has not caught enough to have Lte reliable. Most Lte phones don't last more than 5-8 hrs. You shouldn't have to disconnect from 4g service to get decent battery life. Lte has often seen outages as well.
Hspa+ as for now shows that Lte is not needed. Majority of users have wifi at home. Also ping on Lte networks are either low or extremely high. Compared to t-mobile network. Higher ping the longer it takes for the web page to load.
T-mobile needs a better market strategy. Most of their good devices never have a commercial or any type of advertisement. The best bet would be to sell t-mobile to a company with a lot of spectrum like dish.

Well, that's one site, so it may not be true. My guess is that Moto and Google won't work together and make a non-Nexus phone. But, in the case that this is true, its reason #187324 to get the hell of Verizon, as I will be doing in August. Easily the worst carrier CS-wise. Cost me $65 to return the DNA. I'm just done. I'm on AT&T, 5 lines, 4 smartphones. On the 700 minute plan all 250mb data plan was around $260 a month. Now we're on the mobile share 4gb and it's $300. The switch was due to lines going over data and adding charges. If you don't use data a lot, don't go with mobile share. Service is very reliable here in NJ. If anything, customer service is superb.

I'm in the Houston area as well (so this may not help you for NC as much), but the coverage here is much better than T-Mobile. Talking with friends, it seemed like Verizon does have slightly better coverage (usually outside the city at retreat sites, camping sites, etc.), but in the end I would have ended up paying about 30 dollars more for a slightly better plan on Verizon that I wouldn't take advantage of (unlimited talk mostly, whereas I currently have 1 line, 400 anytime+rollover, 5000 nights and weekends, 3GB data and never come close to my minutes limit).
To be fair, the One X isn't available on Verizon, so with the exception of Rogers/Telstra customers, almost all of us are on AT&T, so there may be a little bias. Not that we all LOVE AT&T, but we're at least satisfied enough to stay (e.g., there aren't any major issues).
I'm in the San Antonio area. Coverage is great. But nexus 4 doesn't support LTE my hox did, but with 200 MB a month I always just used HSPA+

I left Verizon for AT&T when the iPhone 3G came out and haven't looked back.
AT&T can be annoying at times, but when it comes to bloat and lockdowns, Verizon has always been a lot worse. Verzion has in the past tried to send updates that locked your phone if it detected root access.
Not going to lie, I think Verizon has better customer service and reception/speeds. But it's also highly localized. In SoCal, Verizon is assumed to be the best. I've heard in NYC AT&T is the best so it's probably best to see what those in your home town think.
As far as customer service, I'm not a fan of AT&T but they aren't as terrible as they are made out to be. But then again I've never had problems that required much service.
And for what it's worth, I'm not a fanboy on any service/phone/OS. I've had Sprint, tmobile, AT&T and verizon over the last 6 or 7 years in L.A. and overall I would probably rank at&t 3rd or 4th here. That being said I'm mostly satisfied with what I have. I'm on wifi more than LTE and let's face it, most of us aren't using voice calls as much now as 5-10 years ago.
I'm in the western part of NC and have zero problems with AT&T service

I'm on AT&T, 5 lines, 4 smartphones. On the 700 minute plan all 250mb data plan was around $260 a month. Now we're on the mobile share 4gb and it's $300. The switch was due to lines going over data and adding charges. If you don't use data a lot, don't go with mobile share. Service is very reliable here in NJ. If anything, customer service is superb.

Co-sign with the service in NJ being good. Never had much of an issue with them since 2009

Verizon's customer service was indeed pretty good. My beef was the corporate attitude toward their customers, which was "You'll take our bloatware infested, locked down devices and like it because we're Verizon."
AT&T still locks things down, but doesn't seem to care that much if you root and unlock (e.g., plenty of people have gotten warranty replacements despite having bricked via flashing the wrong stuff). Verizon has a history of actively trying to stop people being from being rooted.
Also live in Houston and LTE is phenomenal. Now I work in Odessa and as long as your close to the Midland/Odessa area, you can get reliable 3G coverage (3-7Mbps down) . As soon as you start to move out towards the boonies and their supposed 2G coverage area, this is where Verizon outshines AT&T.
I work in the oil field sector and most of the time when we're at a remote location in West Texas, the only ones who normally have consistent coverage are Verizon customers. Too bad their selection of android devices are horrid.
