New data stats for 2014 are out and it looks like ATT is giving VZW a run for their money with T-Mobile trailing as a close third. ATT data plans are a little cheaper than T-Mobile, but they do not have an unlimited tier, T-Mobile does however and they finance the Nexus 5. From my understanding, ATT supports the Nexus 5, but don't offer financing, so buying it retail from Google or second hand is the only option, which I plan on doing in a few months.
I'm thinking about switching after the holidays and was wondering if the GS3 for VZW is compatible with either carrier's data bands. Has anyone successfully switched to ATT or T-Mobile using the GS3 subsidised by VZW?

Well that sucks, VZW is like communist Russia or something lol.. I would just sell it however its like a year old with some wear.. Doubt I'd be able to get more than $150 for it. I don't mind paying retail, figure switch to a cheaper carrier, keep the GS3 for 4-5 months and save the monthly difference for a new N5.. Guess that's not possible since they use different bands.

Not quite true. You can, but you be stuck on Edge (no HSPA+ or LTE AFAIK). But as previous posters have stated, your best off selling the verizon device and picking up a Tmo one (Most Tmo devices work on ATT and Tmo, Many ATT devices are locked to ATT).
And I would compare Verizon to totalitarian Russia, but message received. =)
None of this matters for those who need all over cell service. I travel all over the midwest, att, tmobile, and sprint all suck for coverage area. If they are good in your area and you dont travel, go for it. You will have little to no rural coverage which also means no data in those areas.

I'd stick with VZW if they still supported nexus devices and weren't trying to lock down everything else, guess there's no incentive for them to do so. ATT has a little over half the amount of towers VZW has with faster data transfer, T-Mobile has about a third and Sprint's LTE is still in infancy.

No incentive indeed. Big red is losing points with me fast.. especially since losing my unlimited data. Sprint's LTE is an absolute joke at this point, but it seems the silver lining is T-mobile's expanding network. If they support your area and you don't need to travel much, an unlocked Nexus 5 on their $30/mo plan is looking very tempting. The 100 minutes a month thing sucks, but there's always voip alternatives.

I just moved to NC and get absolutely **** AT&T service. I hear Verizon works best in my area, so I'm wanting to switch to Verizon but not at the cost of buying a brand new phone when I have my beloved Infuse, and the deposit.
I actually have NOT rooted my Infuse because I liked the stock so much, saw no need to. I did have a rooted Galaxy S, as well as a rooted Nook, so I'm not a complete noob.
I'm just nervous about unlocking my phone to possibly hook it up with Verizon. Can you tell me how this works? After unlocking are you sure it'll be 100% to use with Verizon?
Anything else I need to know? How's your mother doing?
I don't think the infuse will work with Verizon. Verizon uses cdma and infuse is a gsm phone. How's tmobile over there? It'll work but with slow data speeds.

Ugh, eff. This is going to suck. Tmobile is shiz, too. I was really hoping to avoid having to spend $200+ plus whatever security deposit requirements. I've been with AT&T over 5 years.

Idk infuse maybe compatible with cdma, I've seen the option to use it in a special menu somewhere, its regularly set for cdma/gsm so it maybe able to use Verizon but I'm no developer so I'm not to sure

You could try switching to Credo, which uses sprint's towers and you wouldn't lose any money.
They will buy out your at&t contract if you switch to them, so you don't have to pay at&t early termination fees. If you sign their contract, you can also get the sprint sgs2 For $200 and just sell your infuse to cover that cost. So you would have to drop some money at first but get it all back.
I've been considering doing this because Credo spends their money on things like lobbying against sopa/pipa, whereas at&t is really into censoring the uses of our phones.

If service sucks in your house, look into getting a used Microcell from Ebay or Craigslist. On principle I hate the fact I have to use my own broadband connection, buy my own device, and still have my minutes and data usage count against my monthly alottment but that's the way AT&T plays. If it's the entire area you are in then maybe a carrier change is in order.
The Samsung Infuse is a GSM phone. It does not have the capability to connect to CDMA networks (Verizon, Sprint, and any of the MVNOs using Sprint or Verizon's network).
If unlocked, you can use any SIM from another GSM carrier and make voice calls. You will also be able to use Edge (2G) data coverage from any GSM carrier.
In the US, the two largest GSM carriers are AT&T and T-Mobile. They use different 3G frequencies which means using a phone originally for AT&T on T-Mobile only allows you 2G data speeds and vice versa (in general... though some T-Mobile smartphones can use AT&T's 1900Mhz band)
Hope that helps. Unlike Europe and Asia, our phones are by and large locked to their respective carriers even if you unlock them because of the technology difference and frequency differences.

I'm on AT&T, 5 lines, 4 smartphones. On the 700 minute plan all 250mb data plan was around $260 a month. Now we're on the mobile share 4gb and it's $300. The switch was due to lines going over data and adding charges. If you don't use data a lot, don't go with mobile share. Service is very reliable here in NJ. If anything, customer service is superb.

I'm in the Houston area as well (so this may not help you for NC as much), but the coverage here is much better than T-Mobile. Talking with friends, it seemed like Verizon does have slightly better coverage (usually outside the city at retreat sites, camping sites, etc.), but in the end I would have ended up paying about 30 dollars more for a slightly better plan on Verizon that I wouldn't take advantage of (unlimited talk mostly, whereas I currently have 1 line, 400 anytime+rollover, 5000 nights and weekends, 3GB data and never come close to my minutes limit).
To be fair, the One X isn't available on Verizon, so with the exception of Rogers/Telstra customers, almost all of us are on AT&T, so there may be a little bias. Not that we all LOVE AT&T, but we're at least satisfied enough to stay (e.g., there aren't any major issues).
I'm in the San Antonio area. Coverage is great. But nexus 4 doesn't support LTE my hox did, but with 200 MB a month I always just used HSPA+

I left Verizon for AT&T when the iPhone 3G came out and haven't looked back.
AT&T can be annoying at times, but when it comes to bloat and lockdowns, Verizon has always been a lot worse. Verzion has in the past tried to send updates that locked your phone if it detected root access.
Not going to lie, I think Verizon has better customer service and reception/speeds. But it's also highly localized. In SoCal, Verizon is assumed to be the best. I've heard in NYC AT&T is the best so it's probably best to see what those in your home town think.
As far as customer service, I'm not a fan of AT&T but they aren't as terrible as they are made out to be. But then again I've never had problems that required much service.
And for what it's worth, I'm not a fanboy on any service/phone/OS. I've had Sprint, tmobile, AT&T and verizon over the last 6 or 7 years in L.A. and overall I would probably rank at&t 3rd or 4th here. That being said I'm mostly satisfied with what I have. I'm on wifi more than LTE and let's face it, most of us aren't using voice calls as much now as 5-10 years ago.
I'm in the western part of NC and have zero problems with AT&T service

Verizon's customer service was indeed pretty good. My beef was the corporate attitude toward their customers, which was "You'll take our bloatware infested, locked down devices and like it because we're Verizon."
AT&T still locks things down, but doesn't seem to care that much if you root and unlock (e.g., plenty of people have gotten warranty replacements despite having bricked via flashing the wrong stuff). Verizon has a history of actively trying to stop people being from being rooted.
Also live in Houston and LTE is phenomenal. Now I work in Odessa and as long as your close to the Midland/Odessa area, you can get reliable 3G coverage (3-7Mbps down) . As soon as you start to move out towards the boonies and their supposed 2G coverage area, this is where Verizon outshines AT&T.
I work in the oil field sector and most of the time when we're at a remote location in West Texas, the only ones who normally have consistent coverage are Verizon customers. Too bad their selection of android devices are horrid.

So I might be moving to Canada in the next year or so and I am very uninformed about carriers and plans and stuff in that country
So I have a few questions if someone could answer them for me
1: what carriers are there in Ontario Canada Area
2: do they have any sort of unlimited plans?
3: LTE?
And if anyone could give me some pointers on what to do as far as buying a phone when I get there that would be great

Carriers
Hello AaronEmoBoi,
The main carriers in the Ontario area include Rogers, Bell, and Telus, with the smaller carriers including Fido (Subsidiary of Rogers), Koodo, Chatr, Virgin, Wind and I believe that is all.
The main carriers such as rogers do include unlimited plans, as well as some of the smaller carriers, like wind.
Lastly, yes the main carriers and even some the smaller carriers (Fido) have introduced LTE, although they haven't fully expanded yet in all areas of Ontario I believe, so LTE does depend on where you plan on staying in Ontario.
These answers are to the best of my knowledge, and so I may be incorrect. Also, welcome to Ontario!

The CRTC, which is the regulatory body for Telecom in Canada will be changing rules around Dec 2 of this year. I think two year contracts will be norm, similar to the states. Just so you know Kodoo is a subsidiary of Telus, Fido is owned by Rogers, and Bell owns Virgin. So in a manner of speaking there are only 3 main carriers. If I were you I would get a Nexus 4 asap and try out the carriers that suit your interest and ride it out until Dec when the rules change. The only truly unlimited carrier that I would switch to would be Wind mobile. They are a much larger company than mobilicity but the phones are expensive (no subsidy). I say Asap because it's already unlocked and it would enable you to find the best carrier that suits your needs before committing to 3 years

If you want the Nexus 4, it's much cheaper at koodo ($300) than other carriers which charge up to $500 just for the Nexus 4.

If cost is a concern then Kodoo is definitely the cheapest, followed by Fido. Fido also bills by the second so you get much more talk time.

If moving to Southern Ontario you will have lots of choices. If in NW Ontario you will be stuck with Tbaytel or Bell right now. I'm in Thunder Bay on Tbaytel. It runs on the same towers as Rogers but has slightly different plans. Where will you be going in Ontario as it is quite large and diverse?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Where I am (Ottawa, Ontario), there are many carriers. Rogers, Telus, Bell, Koodo, Chatr, Wind, Mobilicity, and more. The cheapest one is mobilicity, but their reception is terrible, so bad that your phone goes into roaming when you go to walmart or something. Rogers, Bell, and Telus are the best in terms of reception and speed, but they're very expensive, and I think you have to sign 3 year contracts. If you dont need data, then I suggest you go with Chatr, as they are pretty cheap, give unlimited call and text for like $35, and run on Rogers' network, so their reception is very good.
Koodo has done right by me. Very flexible with excellent rates. Bring your own phone and go........

Also worried about being able to root. Since Verizon seems to want to lock down devices. Also don't know what to do about the unlimited data I have. Don't want to pay retail but might have to to keep it. Is it worth it. With the nexus 5 I would probably jump ship. Verizon has lost interest in taking care of the customers who made them what they are. They simply don't mind losing customers when new ones walk in the door. What would be a second choice of carrier. T-Mobile. Sprint. At&t. Choosing should not be this difficult but this is what Verizon has done to customers. Bad business practice with customers and Google alike.

I still have unlimited data through Verizon on my GNex, and when the Nexus 5 drops I am getting rid of Verizon!
I am really liking the wireless plans (no contract) offered by AIO. They were bought out by ATT and and it basically uses the ATT LTE nationwide network.
I plan on ditching my GNex and getting a Nexus 5 and signing up for AIO's $70 plan. I will save about $30 a month from what I am paying to Verizon and I'll be able to enjoy the Nexus experience
I can't stand the phones the Verizon offers anymore (no nexus, etc) and I want a phone that I can use on multiple carriers and around the world. Screw Verizon!

Get the n5 with att then. It seems you are used to the price and coverage. I know tmo is great in the urban areas up the eastern seaboard but if you go anywhere like upstate new York etc it gets sparse. I've been on T-Mobile for more than 10 years and fortunate to always be within good coverage but I would probably have to go with evil att if I traveled a lot. Verizon has the best coverage and same prices as att, but no Sim card or way to root the majority of their phones, I would have to go with att

So my contract is up at AT&T, I have been thinking about switching to T-Mobile but I am scared that T-Mobile will not work inside my building at work. I don't want to cancel my AT&T until I know because I have the grandfathered unlimited data.
What I decided to do was to buy a Nexus 5, go to T-Mobile get a plan and try it out for a few weeks to see how the service is. My question is if I decide I do not want to move to T-Mobile and stay with AT&T is it as easy as cancelling the plan because I own the phone, and switching the sim card from T-Mobile to an AT&T?

If you don't need the unlimited data (and it sounds like you don't if you're willing to switch to T-Mobile), another option to consider is the at&t pre-paid route. The GoPhone service is reasonably priced (2gb data for $60), and you'll be staying on the same at&t network.

why waste money on a new device, unless you really want to upgrade to a Nexus 5?
unlock your current S3, test the t-mobile service
I have to say that tmobile's building penetration is indeed poor... enough at my desk near a window, but not enough inside the window-less room in the middle of the building
but it's cheaper than the other plans available by the other carriers. but if you are on a grandfathered plan, evaluate whether it's worth staying
