So my contract is up at AT&T, I have been thinking about switching to T-Mobile but I am scared that T-Mobile will not work inside my building at work. I don't want to cancel my AT&T until I know because I have the grandfathered unlimited data.
What I decided to do was to buy a Nexus 5, go to T-Mobile get a plan and try it out for a few weeks to see how the service is. My question is if I decide I do not want to move to T-Mobile and stay with AT&T is it as easy as cancelling the plan because I own the phone, and switching the sim card from T-Mobile to an AT&T?

Yes. Grab a prepaid sim and pay for one month service from T-Mobile. If you don't like it go back to att.

If you don't need the unlimited data (and it sounds like you don't if you're willing to switch to T-Mobile), another option to consider is the at&t pre-paid route. The GoPhone service is reasonably priced (2gb data for $60), and you'll be staying on the same at&t network.

why waste money on a new device, unless you really want to upgrade to a Nexus 5?
unlock your current S3, test the t-mobile service
I have to say that tmobile's building penetration is indeed poor... enough at my desk near a window, but not enough inside the window-less room in the middle of the building
but it's cheaper than the other plans available by the other carriers. but if you are on a grandfathered plan, evaluate whether it's worth staying

Bought a Nexus 5 because either way I'm upgrading my phone with out a contract.

I have an unlimited $14.99 internet plan, and at the TMo store, I was told I had to upgrade it to a $30/month plan to get the upgrade price for the phone. I just walked out.
If anyone finds a good way around this BS, please post.
Are you available for an upgrade? Typically they will grandfather in plans if you are available for your regular upgrade, but if you try to ask for an upgrade early they will force you to more expensive plans.
Your best bet is to call up T-Mobile and talk to their Customer Loyalty/Retention department. Depending on how long you have been with T-Mobile, they work wonders for you, albeit you would have to wait for your phone to arrive in the mail.
I need to fight with them today myself. I have a family plan and already had one phone with a $25 unlimited plan on it. When I added this line they put me on a $30 plan and did not grandfather in the $25 rate.

Will try calling. I was eligible on this line, but they want to force people off the cheaper plans (some nexus users are still on $5.99 plan).
PS - went to their website, and it offered the upgrade, but when I started the process, it popped up a "warning" that I would have to revisit their website after they shipped it and set up an "android" plan.
Tempted to go through the process on my credit card (not on my TMo account credit - so they cannot pull back the upgrade "discount"), and when I get the phone - just put the SIM in and see what happens.
AT $180/year more for the data plan, it would be better for me to just pay the full price. Will get most of it back from my Nexus on eBay if I decide to keep the phone past the remorse period.
Fight harder -- depending on how long you have been with T-Mobile, they will give you their new Android Premium Web for $20 a month.
I have been with them before they officially started up in the US (used them in Germany).
On hold - will see....
Guess what - from customer retention - $99 for the upgrade (not $199), and the $30 "android" plan for $20/month. I also have a 20 day period to return and restore my existing data plan.
From this and one other experience, it appears customer retention should be the way to go as a normal upgrade route (that is how I got the $14.99 unlimited plan a while back).
What's this Android Premium Web? I have been with them for over 5 years on the family account. My work account has been with them since the voicestream days.

Android Premium Web is just the official name for the $30/month unlimited data plan for Android phones.
That unlimited stuff is bs because its not truly unlimited any how u use over 3gigs for a certain month they drop udown to edge speeds but the only way u will know is if u do a speed test

First of all, the soft cap is 5 GB, not 3 GB. Secondly, I hear if you live in an area where there is HSPA+, after 5 GB they will drop you to 3G, then after 10 GB they will drop you to edge.
Secondly, it is still "unlimited" because you can still use the Internet -- just at slower speeds.
Lastly, they send you a text message telling you they throttled your speed, so you know. If you have been a customer with T-Mobile for a while, and/or this only happens to you once in a while, calling up T-Mobile can typically get them to remove the throttle.

Not sure, but they probably do.
i pay $20.00 for unl. inter. you need to call customer care and order your phone from them in order to keep your cheap inter.
I'm not sure why you guys think you deserve the right for an early upgrade when you are currently locked into a 2 year contract. If you try to talk them into it they have no choice but to force you to get the new prices.
I've never understood the purpose of locking yourself into a new 2 year contract every time a new phone comes out. If a new phone is coming out, and you KNOW for a fact you want it, then save up ahead of time and buy it full price. That way you can keep your old grandfather plans with the much cheaper pricing. Or you can do what I'm doing and go with their EM+ solutions, which only T-Mobile offers, and have a much cheaper monthly bill but buy your phones outright. It saves much more money, just sell your current phone on craigslist and pay the difference.

I was not locked in on the line I upgraded with.
Currently using Nexus from eBay - will be selling it back there IF I decide to keep the 4G. If not, I have 20 days to return and go back to grandfathered plan.
I had been thinking about just paying full price and keeping my $14.99 plan if they had stuck with $30 for the plan.
What is their EM+ solutions and do you know what the EM+ price would be on this device?

Well, it can't get any cheaper than what I'm paying - $30 voice and $20 data. I may get more minutes with EM+, but I don't need them. And, by upgrading I don't have to change plans or anything. So, I get the phone at subsidized pricing as I know I'll be with T-Mo anyway. Furthermore, if I DO need to change providers for any extreme reason, the ETF drops over time, so nothing is lost and everything is gained, at least for me.

Given the Thunderbolt is getting out-of-date more or less, and that Verizon has ditched upgrading AND keeping unlimited data, where do you stand?
What does "upgrade" mean for a current 4g customer - any change to any new phone? What about Sprint's unlimited plan? Why aren't more people talking about that as an option?

Upgrade as in upgrade through Verizon, sign a two year contract, thereby sacrificing unlimited data.
+1 Sprint sucks, at least until they have a nationwide LTE network...then..maybe.
Im not going to upgrade through Verizon. My wife doesn't even want to lose unlimited data. Plus their new plan will cost us $40 more a month.

More power to ya, we're in the same boat.
I will wait a year or so and upgrade to the Sammy S3 or the vigor/Tbolt 2 once they are slightly less new. I'll pay less for them on my own and keep unlimited. Losing unlimited is not worth getting the latest toy. The current tbolt is not bad with a new rom loaded.

This is bull****! How is that an "upgrade", because I continue my existing service for an additional term? Upgrade implies an improvement in some manner. What's the improvement- my new phone? That characterization is subjective at best. Bastards! Sons'a *****es!
I'm waiting for a Nexus phone that I can purchase directly thru the Google Play Store. However, I doubt Google will be able to develop a CDMA phone without Verizon or Sprints collaboration. I don't want to give up my unlimited data plan because I use 20gb a month streaming video and music.

Once my contract is up I will sell my bolt and ditch Verizon. I will buy another phone outright then go with straight talk.
I'm up for renewal in about never, so I'll keep the T'bolt and see what the developers do with ICS and JB and Sense 4.x (VZW has already said ICS will come ONLY with Sense 3.x so I'll skip the official ICS release) and make any decision later.
Probably just stick with them and hope that they'll make some change in the near future about upgrading.

Same here. I don't mind the Tbolt with a custom ROM and having it with unlimited data is better for me than having the latest piece of hardware. It's also nice to know that replacement parts for this phone are fairly inexpensive.
Go on www.cowboom.com and buy a good condition pre-owned phone. I've got my eye on the rezound if my Tbolt fails.

Is there a viable prepaid market for smart phones? Guess if there is, you'd be stuck with crap phones...
I'll see what Verizon does when upgrade time comes. But I'm not sure what my other options are...
Duely blundered from my thunderdolt
My fear is if I pay $650 for a razr maxx vzw will take my unlimited data away anyway. A phone rep told me all unlimited data plans will be taken away in "a year".
So how does it work, is the only way to get a new phone and keep unlimited to buy used or at full price? Or would upgrading at like best buy mobile be any different than upgrading directly through Verizon?
Sent from my ADR6400L using xda app-developers app
Yes, u must pay full price or used. Some have claimed they were able to upgrade and keep data plan in vzw website but others have denied it.
So I walked into AT&T to help my girlfriend go from her non-smartphone plan to the prepaid $65 a month data plan so that she could use an unlocked Nexus 4 using the plan. Before you say she should switch to T-mobile that isn't an option (I wish it was).
The lady there said that she didn't think the Nexus could work using that plan because something about it having 4g capabilities. To my knowledge the Nexus 4 is NOT a 4g device (not LTE anyways), and I left very confused about something I thought would be extremely easy.
Could anyone explain to me how you would use the Nexus 4 on AT&T's prepaid plan, or AT&T in general. Were they just trying to bait me into getting her a 2 year contract?
Thanks for any help!
furthermore...
I am talking to a rep. online who says the $65 a month data plan only allows for 3g speeds regardless of phone, so what are my AT&T options off contract that allow for 4g speeds?
Hey XDA guys;
I am a long time AT&T customer and I have an Unlimited Plan. I've never had a phone with LTE enabled because I hated the options available at AT&T so I've always used unlocked phones like the Nexus 4 on HSPA.
Now that the Google Edition of the S4 is being launched, I've decided to purchase it if I can get a LTE on my grandfathered unlimited plan. I've heard that many people have moved to LTE on their old unlimited plans, but a lot of those stories involve using 2 year upgrades and purchasing AT&T phones.
My concern is that I won't get the LTE connection though because it's not an AT&T phone. I have no desire to give up unlimited data for LTE either. Question: Does anyone know if I can get LTE on the Google Edition S4 by just calling/visiting AT&T and asking them to enable it?
Thanks and sorry for the heavy context, but I just want to get the most accurate response.
Bump. Sorry would really like to know.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I'm on VZW, but it's my understanding that you only lose your grandfathered unlimited when you buy a phone at subsidized price. I could go into VZW right now and drop $800 on a new phone, and keep my unlimited, but pay the $1500 subsidized price and I lose it. So I'd imagine that as long as your phone is compatible with AT&T's LTE you should be good to go, but calling them wouldn't hurt!
Yea it makes sense that VZW and AT&T have similar policies. I worry about calling AT&T or using their forums in fear of getting deceptive answers.
New data stats for 2014 are out and it looks like ATT is giving VZW a run for their money with T-Mobile trailing as a close third. ATT data plans are a little cheaper than T-Mobile, but they do not have an unlimited tier, T-Mobile does however and they finance the Nexus 5. From my understanding, ATT supports the Nexus 5, but don't offer financing, so buying it retail from Google or second hand is the only option, which I plan on doing in a few months.
I'm thinking about switching after the holidays and was wondering if the GS3 for VZW is compatible with either carrier's data bands. Has anyone successfully switched to ATT or T-Mobile using the GS3 subsidised by VZW?

Well that sucks, VZW is like communist Russia or something lol.. I would just sell it however its like a year old with some wear.. Doubt I'd be able to get more than $150 for it. I don't mind paying retail, figure switch to a cheaper carrier, keep the GS3 for 4-5 months and save the monthly difference for a new N5.. Guess that's not possible since they use different bands.

Not quite true. You can, but you be stuck on Edge (no HSPA+ or LTE AFAIK). But as previous posters have stated, your best off selling the verizon device and picking up a Tmo one (Most Tmo devices work on ATT and Tmo, Many ATT devices are locked to ATT).
And I would compare Verizon to totalitarian Russia, but message received. =)
None of this matters for those who need all over cell service. I travel all over the midwest, att, tmobile, and sprint all suck for coverage area. If they are good in your area and you dont travel, go for it. You will have little to no rural coverage which also means no data in those areas.

I'd stick with VZW if they still supported nexus devices and weren't trying to lock down everything else, guess there's no incentive for them to do so. ATT has a little over half the amount of towers VZW has with faster data transfer, T-Mobile has about a third and Sprint's LTE is still in infancy.

No incentive indeed. Big red is losing points with me fast.. especially since losing my unlimited data. Sprint's LTE is an absolute joke at this point, but it seems the silver lining is T-mobile's expanding network. If they support your area and you don't need to travel much, an unlocked Nexus 5 on their $30/mo plan is looking very tempting. The 100 minutes a month thing sucks, but there's always voip alternatives.
