PDF Reading Experience? - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone, I've been lurking in the forum for quite a while, and now I'm finally about to purchase my own Transformer . The main reason that I'm getting a tablet is to read PDFs (technical books/text books, mostly large files), and I just want to get some suggestions and hear some of your experiences before making the final decision.
Earlier this year I bought a Galaxy Tab 7" for the purpose but found it hardly acceptable --- pages load super slow and it lags quite a bit when changing pages. The screen was bit too small for text books. I ended up selling it.
So I'm hoping that the Transformer can be an big improvement. Do you generally find that the quality of reading PDFs user experience is bad, acceptable, good, great? e.g. legible, easy to zoom in and out, landscape mode works, smooth/laggy when flipping pages, annotation capability(with Repligo or ezPDF) and etc.?
Any suggestion is welcomed. Thank you all in advance!

It works quite well. Haven't tried either of the apps listed in the last paragraph, but asus stock reader and polaris office both do it stock. I think asus does a really good job and is quite smooth. no annotation though.

I'm an engineer who uses several manuals that are thousands of pages long. My steels manual, for example, is 2500 pages. I've no problem opening those big-ass PDF files. You came too late. ezpdf was on sale for 10 cents just a few days ago.
Repligo and ezpdf both allows you to hand write notes directly into your PDF files. Ezpdf allows bookmarks. If you want to open PDF files that are 2000+ pages with lots of pictures and contents, use repligo.
I own all PDF apps out there. Trust me, I know what I'm talking about. And yes, both allows annotations. ezpdf is better at it, though. Just get both.

I had the ipad 2 before buying the eeepad.
eeepad is a little slow in changing the pages during flipping the pdf.
i run my eeepad at 1.2ghz and have tried all of the readers.
Ipad2 was 20-30% better experience in pdf viewing than the eeepad.
but i believe this is it because itunes optimize the pdf compression of the pdf files before sending it to the ipad2.
hope with ics the pdf experience will become a little better.

I find the PDF reading experience on my Transformer good, sometimes there is a little lag in changing pages.... but it is no big deal. The screen is good, I have no problem with that.
I use Aldiko for my eBook reading, as well as Adobe PDF, Polaris and the ASUS reader, though the readers goodintentions mentioned (RePligo and ezPDF) sound better suited to what you want to do... I might try them out myself.
I use mine for textbooks and programming books p) with no problems, I had significant lag one time when trying to open a photography book, but that was a massive PDF with over 600 pages of high quality photos.

The lag you speak of are app specific and says nothing about the TF.
Remember that those apps you're using are free apps. They are not optimized.

Use repligo. I use it for 2000+ page pdf files with very high resolution photos with no problem.
The more I read these comments, the more I am convinced people should just get an ipad. None of these issues of choice would come up if they had used an iOS device.

It depends...
I read a lot of PDF files including magazines and books. If the pdf has images/graphics etc, it will lag when turning pages, kind of annoying. The most efficient reader speedwise for high graphics documents is adobe reader, but it is not great. Polaris office sometimes does a decent job.
Depending on the intensity of the file, the page may take a second or two to fully render. Zooming will even be slower.
This is my biggest gripe about this tablet, but I do not know if it would be different with other tablets as several use the same HW.
So, if you are not in a hurry, you are fine. If you are trying to find something quickly and read a lot of PDFs, check out the new prime.

I also own aldiko. Not too savy, IMHO.

I own ezPDF and it's very good. Sometimes loading new page is slower - but thats about it. No problems and I do a lot of annotations (handwritten with stylus).

The free Adobe PDF reader is just as fast as the paid versions. In fact I'd say it's the smoothest PDF reader available.
I bought ezPDF and Repligo, but I tend to use Adobe's reader most of the time.

Yeah but then if the PDF reader sucked, there's no assurance of being able to solve it until the church pushes an update that might help.

Thank you everyone for your kind input!
I am aware that there might be a little lag, but as long as it's not too bad I'll be fine. Didn't expect it to be silky smooth anyways
However Ipad2 does a very good job on this. I tried opening a photography magazine with lots of high-resolution pictures on my sister's ipad2, it rendered it beautifully, I could barely feel any lag when zooming or changing pages.

I'm planning to get the keyboard dock as well. I read somewhere that there's a battery drain problem with the B50/B60 batches. Can someone confirm this? Do I need to pay attention to any particular serial numbers?
Thanks!

When I read PDF documents on my Galaxy Nexus, there is no lag at all. I can just wizz through the pages. Hopefully the new Java interpreter and accelerated GUI will give the Transformer a bit of a boost in this regard too.

Is there confirmation that ICS will be ported to Transformer Original?

I use ezpdf
after trying most of the ones out there, I ended up installing ezpdf on both my transformers, and my nook tablet. It is smooth for me not overclocked, the transformer for my wife is not rooted straight stock and moves well even my daughters nook color (1st gen) with cm7 works well with it. I like the page flipping and when I was taking a class it was the best option for me. I won't look back it updates all the time, they are very prompt about your responses as well.

There was confirmation that ICS will be ported to the original Transformer. I haven't seen any dates mentioned yet though.
Not sure if older hardware will be able to take full advantage of ICS either.
The difference in the PDF browser between the Transformer and Galaxy Nexus is quite visible though. With the Galaxy Nexus having the same resolution and (AFAIK) similar CPU power. Flick the page and it just keeps scrolling without a hickup. Until you scroll so far ahead that it needs to load the pages of course.

The TF101's hardwares are anything but old. The 2nd gen xoom, for example, contain the same hardware as the TF101.
I don't understand this notion that just because something new comes out in a couple months that the current one is obsolete. My desktop is about 5 years old. I assure you, it can run everything under the sun.

but it won't benefit from new hardware acceleration tricks since these tricks weren't built into the hardware at that time.
So my point is, the Transformer will run ICS, but will it benefit just as much from it as the Galaxy Nexus does? We'll have to wait and see.

Question About 7.0 Plus vs Thrive or Transformer

I recently got the 7.0 plus as a late Christmas gift. I like the size of the tablet because it is nice and light and goes everywhere. However, I have a few cons that I am wondering if they are deal breakers for me.
The first is the lack of games that can be played on the 7.0 plus. I don't want my tablet to play games all the time but I was hoping to be able to play a few games (like riptide or asphalt6) and this tablet cannot play those types of games.
The second is that some tablet apps don't work on this device and I would guess that is because of the 7 inch size. I was hoping to mainly use the device to read news, magazines and books. I do not care too much about videos because I have a laptop that can handle all HD videos I throw at it.
I'm stuck between size, weight and portability versus games and proper apps. Does anyone know how the Thrive, Transformer or Samsung 8.9 tablet handle these things?
Thanks for any help
Have you tried Chainfire? This may allow you to play the games you mentioned. As far as the other apps are concerned, you may want to contact the developers. They may just need to update the app so it recognizes the 7.0 Plus as a tablet.
Keep in mind, this tablet is relatively new, and my guess is, many issues like this will be resolved in due time.

Agreed chainfire is about your only option right now. With that said the exynos chips are very very good....just give it some more time for the dev community to pick up.

I second what the posters above have already said. Chainfire 3D will allow you to play those games for now, but with time these games will be updated to work with the 7.0 Plus. The same goes for the tablet apps.
To answer your second question, the 8.9, (since it is Tegra 2) can handle everything you have discussed in your post, and it is closest in size to the 7.0 Plus of all of the tablets you have mentioned. If you like the portability of the 7.0 Plus, a move to the Transformer or the Thrive, (especially the Thrive as it is so thick,) will feel a good deal less portable.
My advice, (for what it's worth) would be to get chainfire3D for now to play the games and then stop using it or even get rid of it once the games have been updated for your tablet. The tablet apps will be updated, it will just take a few more weeks. (I seriously doubt it would take more than 3 more weeks for developers to update their apps.) I hope this helps. Have fun with your tablet.

HUH? Riptide works great even without chainfire. Asphalt 6 on the other hand is fairly new and still doesn't support our tablet officially. But there are some workarounds with that. (thanks to chrisrotolo for teaching me )
Well, I haven't really found any tablet optimized app that doesn't work on the GTab+. I think it is compatible with our device but maybe it's not available on your country?

I was messing around with the dpi and find if you change it to 132 if the app has a tablet optimized version it will show properly on the tab. Try it with the IMDB app you'll see what I mean.
Thanks for the responses guys! I tried riptide and it FC'd. I'm in America and the apps I was talking about is thinks like CNN Tablet Edition cannot even be installed. It says it does not recognize my device.
I will have to try chainfire and see how it works! Thanks again for the help
Actually, can anyone help me so I can get the games to work?

[Q] Transformer or Transformer Prime?

Hey guys,
So here's my dilemma. I was thinking of getting a netbook for professional purposes (word, mindmapping software and possibily vintage gaming) but I've com to the conclusion that most netbooks pretty much suck hardware-wise (can't even do HD video <.<).
So I took a look at both the Transformers, and with their keyboard dock they seemed like a perfect choice, for their size and usability.
However, the vintage gaming I'm looking for (that I'm willing to throw away at this point) was only available for Windows (mostly). So being that I'm possibly opting for an Android "tablet-book" I'm still wondering this:
Are the rumors that Windows 8 will be ARM-compatible and possbily will work on the Transformer Prime? If so I might get one. If not I'll possibly go for the original transformer. But that leaves me with another question:
Except for the quad-core is the difference from the Tegra2 to the Tegra3 really steep in terms of performance?
Thanks in advance,
K.
Dont hold your breath for windows 8. The rumor says its only going to be sold pre-installed on devices, and not available for download to other devices. And since it isnt open source, porting it to other devices would be quite tricky, and also piss microsoft off.
The Prime is faster, no doubt. But is it enough to justify the price differences? I dont think so.
The tegra2 can not handle 1080p movies. The prime struggles with them as well but can play most of them.
But in whole, it sounds like a tablet wont satisfy your needs, unless you got access to a windows PC you can use through remote desktop all the time.
A tablet can not replace a laptop/pc yet. They arent ment for that. Once win8 tablets start to mature, that might change. But that might take years.

Before anything thanks for the reply, every input is useful
The point is, I don't need it to substitute my desktop PC (I have a gaming rig, it would be impossible xD), I do need it to be able to work on documents on the go, read stuff, and browse the web like it was a netbook, but without sacrificing the abitity to watch video like I would have on a netbook.
In terms of gaming I only really need it to run all Android games flawlessly

That wont happen, for several reasons;
Gameloft, which has a big amount of good games, hardly supports the Transformers, forcing us to find the games by other means.
A lot of games is only coded for crappy phones with their low-res screens, making them unplayable on a tablet with a larger resolution.
If you want an android device that can play the majority of the games available, you're better of getting a high-end phone ... its a sad world we're living in...
That said, there is a lot of games available, but some takes a lot of time to find.
One example is Order & Chaos... It took me 2 weeks before I actually found a version that works on the TF101, and once gameloft decides to update the game - who knows how long it will take before it will work again.
We have a thread here that lists the gameloft games currently known to work on our TF101's. The list itself isnt updated in quite a while, but the last few pages lists some more games.
I think the Prime forum got a similar thread.

Thanks for the advice again
But honestly I don't play Gameloft stuff because I hate their shanenigans of making crappy coded games that don't even work the same on two phones with the same hardware.
I'm talking more about many of the indie games that have been popping up on the Market from Osmos HD, to Avadon and Canabalt among many others.
Its a hard choice but if you want gps and great wifi the original tf is the choice.
Documents on the go no problems for me.
If you root and use custom roms and overclock the performance difference at the moment does not justify the price.
Gaming thats a hard one some might say games dont work or hd games are usually released for the prime etc etc. But for me i play ps1 n64 gameboy etc with a ps3 controller on my tf101 i also play sims freeplay and a load of other games that i got direct from the market. You may not get all games but i think the best part of say 4-5 hundred games would be enough for anyone.
The ability to hook it up to the tv and play ps1 games with opengl (makes the old graphics look way better) alone makes it worth loving my android tablet.
Also when i had to decide between netbook and android tablet the winner for me was the tf101 because i can get 18hrs battery life most netbooks i have seen are lucky to last 6.

I can watch videos fine on my transformer (I'm not really an avid video watcher who can ONLY watch things in super super HD, seriously, 720 is really good on a screen this small). My tablet is very useful because I mostly browse, read pdfs, and take notes. Sadly, I find that I'm using the keyboard less and less, since the only time I really use it is when I have to type up reports, and latex works better with a bigger screen so I don't even use the keyboard much then..

[Q] TF700 I/O Throttling Issue?

Has not been resolved. Plenty of threads on it in these forums.
There are some workarounds, as with the browser (browser2ram), plus tweaks, disabling bloat, etc. - but the I/O problem still (and will continue) to exist. It's hardware based.
TF700 I/O Throttling Issue?
John,
Thanks for your reply.
Is this issue bad enough to pass on buying the TF700?
I don't care about games. Would use it for web browsing, Office work, SKYPE video, and photo viewing and uploading.
Would I have to root to accomplish any tweaks? I'm not anxious to do that yet to a new machine, since I'm new to Android.
My other main consideration is the Galaxy Note 10.
But I liked the higher resolution and keyboard of the TF700.
Do you have any opinion?
Thanks again.
Alan
What exactly does the throttling affect? I read somewhere that ASUS cheaped out on the RAM in the Infinity. Does it affect the speed of switching program to program? I haven't noticed any extreme issues with speed. Then again, I have disabled a ton of of the bloatware and tweaked a lot of the settings to get maximum performance (on non rooted JB). I did notice that after upgrading to JB and then reformatting, things ran smoother.

In my experience upgrading to jelly bean has made a difference and provides a much smoother experience.
However before you do that it is worth considering rooting the Infinity (doesn't void warranty) then restoring root after the upgrade as you can tweak things so that the io is not really an issue.
Custom Roms certainly help as well.
I do feel that people on xda have become somewhat fixated with the asus io issues. In everyday use they are not really that noticeable especially after the JB upgrade.

Any resource-intensive task may let the I/O issue surface. Photo viewing is OK, uploading, well... that would depend on several other factors (WiFi quality, the type of image files and their size/resolution/compression level). Web browsing is hit or miss: most do not notice a drastic impediment, but others do. Very personal. And all the same considerations apply to Skype/VOIP in general/word-processing software.
Day to day use is not that bad, however, even on stock, unless you have a 'Monday-morning model'...

Yes, you would need root, definitely. Not that hard to accomplish, IF you can follow instructions to the letter. Being really new to Android, you'll either have to start somewhere, or just use what is given to you by the manufacturer.

In my opinion, if you are even considering the Note, it's not that big a difference to you. I wouldn't even consider the Note a serious contender for the same reasons you gave, but, again, that is as personal as it gets.

Yes, they used a relatively slow Hynix unit, from what I've read. Read up on the I/O issue on the load of threads that are a bit older -- we went into a relatively deep discussion there which is hard/futile/unnecessary to reproduce here. There's a lot of info and considerations mentioned in there -- take a look!

It's not about the RAM, it's the embedded MMC, which is slower than the internal storage in many other Android-based devices. The effect is visible whenever you try to load or store larger amounts of data in the internal storage - installing apps, loading pictures, downloading files, etc.
For years, PC users have suffered from slow storage until SSDs became affordable - our eMMC is even slower than a mechanical hard drive in a netbook. Software can only work around the storage slowness by caching, but this cannot fully hide the issues.

Absolutely get one! Regarding the "I/O" issues - they are way overblown, to be honest. With Jelly Bean it's not much of a problem at all. There are also a few tweaks around (browser2ram, for example), that make browsing a much faster experience (along with a few other tweaks here and there).
Overall, the TF700 is an awesome tablet with a *super* awesome display and great keyboard dock. We are just now starting to realize the potential of this device and developers are starting to produce custom ROMs and kernels that will make it even that much better.
Do not let the I/O "problem" stop you from buying the device - you will see once you get it, that it's really not much of a problem at all.
After all, you can always return the device if you don't like it...

The method to root JB on our tablets has not been released yet - IOW, that is the only way to root a locked Infinity running JB
It sounds like you made a decision already, but just to back up a bit more.
Here is compiled I/O scores from official Antutu scores.
View attachment 1384251
I chose Antutu here because I could not readily find scores of many devices at once on other benchmarks, but I believe the result will be similar.
For instance, check http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/0...hmark-11-modern-devices-compared-in-13-tests/ Originally before update TF700 score was listed here. But with update (back in early August or late July) the RL bench score was already up to 60-90s.
So what are these proving?
Yes. I/O is slower than the that of Galaxy Note 10.1, or some android phones. But it is not unique to the Infinity. Essentially, what happening here I believe is Infinity just simply did not use top notch I/O but I don't think they cheaped out. Each manufacture decides where to put money when building a device. For example, Samsung's Galaxy Note 10.1 used 2GB RAM and nice IO but did not use Full HD screen. In a ideal world, we can always ask for more. 4GB RAM, Ivy Bridge, Retina display etc. for $500...
Conclusion is basically IO should be as good as most other android tablet out there. In fact, infinity may still be superior to some due to DDR3 RAM use. I think people made/surmised IO as major issue because transformer series had frequent ANR, and lag almost to freeze while application downloading when it was originally released (at least for TF700 and I believe similar story for TF201). Given the use of most cutting edge Tegra chip, DDR3 ram, people hypothesized IO is the bottleneck and the cause of the issue.
But now those original issues raised seemed so much better to the point I say ANR frequency is pretty identical to my iPad 2 and formerly owned Galaxy Note 10.1. System stutters slightly when installing large application sometimes, but not to the point unusable and every system has that issue. Even my desktop does get that if I do too many things at once.
I am extremely happy with this device, and currently this is the most ideal tablet on the market for me.

Second, especially now that it's on Jellybean.

What is the point?

1-What is point of buying FULL HD tablet and most the apps are not optimize for it..(Like the IPAD 3 there are a few apps that are optimize )
2-What is the point, every time i go GOOGLE PLAY to buy an app ,it is not compatible with my devices.
{Almost 90% of EA games and 90% of GAMELOFT games are compatible with my devices.}
What else i'm i missing........
MOD EDIT: REMOVED
This is the future of tablets along with 2gigs of ram like the Note 10.1. Eventually apps will be optimized for tablets and for higher res screens. Google has spoken out and said that they will focus on tablet apps optimization so its only a matter of time before most devs are on board. Yes many apps are not optimized for the FHD screen but I havent had any issues with all the apps Ive downloaded far and i already have about 150 apps installed. I dont know about you but I like knowing that my FHD screen tablet will still be valid in the coming years vs one with an aging lower res screen.

Not to worry new technology often has a away of finding it's place.

Text, which is used on ebooks, web browse, several games etc. But if you have Infinity or FHD device, just go use non FHD device now. You will immediately notice blurriness on texts. My eyes are bad, but even then I noticed the difference on my old iPad 2 after 2 weeks of Infinity.
The problem is that everything is made for the Galaxy. And we know all that has a resolution that looks 10 years old compared to the TF700. Devs are too stupid or too lazy to figure out it's easier to downscale than upscale. (Evidently I mean those on Google Play and not the folks here, let's keep those two seperate.)
As for compatibility issues, developers are too lazy to add 'Transformer TF700" to that text file in the google play store that lists compatible devices. (How hard is it to do that when you add the Nexus 7?! Morons) Fact is all EA and Gameloft games work FINE on the TF700.
many apps/games which are shown as not compatible are working fine if you copy a titanium backup from your phone to the tab!

When an app or games looks really promising, I'll always try side-loading from my Galaxy SII -- works more often than not. With Total Commander, you can just send over the raw apk file as well.
I have removed a few post in here guys, remember this site is for everyone, be mindful of what you say. Thank you!

I Blame Asus, they should call the Game developer and ask the why the game is not compatible with their device.
When Asphalt 7: Heat came out it wasn't compatible with the Nexus 7,but Google make sure that was compatible in a few days.
Asus is making Good Hardware but does really spend time on the software.....
I look at it this way:
I went through the same pain when Vista first came out, only it was software *AND* device drivers (for hardware). IOW, Been there, done that.
Yeah, it is annoying that some apps are not available for my Infinity. But, most are. And I am good with that.
As mentioned above, I'd rather be ahead of the curve in terms of hardware than behind it. Having used my Infinity for a couple of months now I could never use anything less than the resolution I am using on it on any other tablet.
What is the point of spending $500 or more on a tablet device and not getting Full HD?

[Q] My First Tablet : TF300T?

Hi there,
I'm looking for my first tablet... Here's what i want to do with it :
- Read mails and surf on web (avoid to go on desktop computer in a separate room...)
- Read eBooks and view Film in train
- Play games! (NOVA3 and over more recent games...) maybe buy a Bluetooth game pad to play on TV after?
As you can see, it would be for travel too... So i first think about Nexus 7. But when i see it, it's just too small...
What about TF300T (with keyboard)?
- TF300T has a good fallowing? (Does it pass to 4.2 soon? as example)
- all games work ok on it? (specially Gameloft)
- any fealing or regret for some of you?
- Is it still the good time to buy a TF300T (which begin to be a bit old, no?)
Thanks in advance....
Cast.
I'm very happy with my tf300t 32gb. The 10 inch screen is very nice. I've read a good bit about the keyboard and have decided to purchase one soon. As for 4.2, I read that Asus is in beta testing and it should be released before the end of the year.

I owned a 32gb with dock for about 6 months. I sold it for the nexus 10. For me, I used it for surfing, a little gaming, loved it while traveling, especially with the keyboard dock. My main problem was the I/O especially on web browsing. Don't get me wrong, its a great device, just not the one for me. I did lots of research, questions on here, reviews comparisons on YouTube and went with the nexus 10. Should be her Monday!!
From other members on here who came from the tf brand they said the performance is very noticible.
Granted there are some great things, expandable storage, and the keyboard dock. The performance just wasn't there for me..
Do some research before you pull the trigger

Can you tell me more about your problem? I just want to know if i'll be impacted with it because i too want to web browsing with my tablet...
Other question : do you know if Nexus 10 will be sell in shops in the future? I have a voucher to use.... If I can buy it in shop, not on google website, it'll be great...
Thanks!

For me it was wait errors and then close browser or wait. It happened often, or it was just slow. When I would use the iPad it was so clean, and quick with pages loading. From what I hear the nexus 10 is leaps ahead of the tf300. The tf300 is older gen quad core. The nexus 10 brand new dual core, that outperformed the tegra processors.
Its just had to explain, it was just slow, sometimes felt like 30+ seconds to load.. let me find you a YouTube video about this...

i love my tf300 for playing games browsing the net and watching films, the added usb slot in the dock means i can just plug in my 500gb hdd with all my films and tv shows on and just play from there

Yes, that's a big plus for me too - but with Stock ROM I got some browser closes when I had opened many tabs - also some games were laaging a bit, so I'd recommend you to unlock and flash a Custom ROM (I do it on every of my Android devices :laugh
I think at the moment TF300T (or TF700T, but for just a display difference TF700 is too expensive compared with TF300)and Nexus 10 are the best 10 inch tablets, but Nexus 10 has only 16GB what is just not enough if you want to watch movies and play (Gameloft) games while travelling, because both things just need much space...
So I can really recommend you this tab, I've had no problems so far and it was really worth the money (Except when it fell on the floor once and had a grey screen and I thought Tab was broken - unfortunately just RAM was ****ed up for the moment, Reboot "fixed" this )
I was in your position a few months ago but went ahead and purchased one after selling my Xoom. At first I was a little unsure if I had done the right thing and there were a few performance problems but after unlocking, rooting and installing custom ROMs any problems i had have now completely been eliminated.
With the dock the and extra storage you really can't go wrong. I'd recommend buying one but only if your prepared to unlock and root it. There are plenty of guides in these forums and a whole bunch of helpful people if you get stuck.
Iam currently running the CleanRom 2.7 Rom and it's absolutely amazing, my tablet is flying along rather nicely
