Hi guys. I'm hoping my post hasn't broken any forum rules... but anyway, i am very new to android, and i'm still trying to read up on/learn about rooting a phone + flashing a ROM to it. I have a few questions that i'm hoping some experienced people could answer for me =]
1. Does my HTC sensation need to have a certain update before i can try archieve S-Off? (I'm on the Three network [UK] and my software number is 1.34.771.1)
2. How easy is it to brick a device? Im good with computers, and can follow instructions, but seeing as i have no past experience with android, i'm anxious to try flash new ROMs to my phone without insurance - as £500 for a new device would kill me... =P
3. When flashing a new custom ROM to my phone, what kind of 'wipe' do i need to perform? I've read a few articles, all of which say to perform different wipes.
4. I dont understand ' Radio Flashing' could someone kindly explain that to me please?
5. What exactly does CWM backup? =P
I hope i'm not wasting anyones time here, i have read through the articles for noobs, just need some clarification =]
Thanks for everyones time.

1. As long as you are on Android 2.3.3 there shouldnt be a problem. 2.3.4 donesnt have a S=off just yet, i think
2. Bricking is actually very hard to do, if u follow instructions you should be good
3. all you need to wip is the system data, cache, and i reccomend wiping the battery status too
4. Radio flashing is chaning your radio number. this is actually a very easy process. Dont worry about this, all you do is put a zip on ur sd card, and the phone does the rest.
5. ClockWork Mod backs up quite literally everytrhing. Think "Macrium Reflect" for a PC. Or a "Ghost Backup" for a PC.
6. I just added this. don worry about wasting peoples time. We are here to help each other like a community. Let me know if u have any other questions.
I am following this thread, and when u reply i will answer you again. So feel free to ask any more questions.
If you feel like ur ready to root just go to the Development forum and see the 1st sticky thread. Or if u ask i will send u a few links on how to root.

Thank you very much =] Think i'll give rooting a go within the next week... just want to make my sensation that much faster and improve the battery life!
If you don't mind me asking;
What exactly is a Radio number for?
I am on android 2.3.3 , just my software number seemed different to other peoples phones =P
So if i use this 'Clockwork Mod' to backup everything, once the new ROM has installed, will everything just be the same (apart from the changes on the ROM obv) such as app placements on homescreens etc. Or will i have to put everything back?
Also, say android releases 2.3.5 , im assuming i would just flash an updated ROM over the top of an older 2.3.4 ROM when it is released?
I've read through the 1st sticky a few times already, just to familiarise myself with certain words/actions =]
Finally, what is hboot =]
Thanks again for your time!

Clockwork Mod is just a recovery program to allow you to install new ROMs to your device, but most importantly, to let you backup and restore your current device configuration (like a sort of time machine). Most developers recommend Clockwork Mod (CWM) because it is so good at what it does. If anything fails, and you need to use your phone in a pinch, just revert to a CWM backup, and all's well!
So, to answer your question, unfortunately, no. One of the only ways to do that is with Titanium Backup, a program from the Android Market.
CWM is for reverting to previous incarnations of your phone's software and firmware.
Sorry I only answered one question, but it was the only one I knew how to in an effective manner.
Sorry, I can answer another!

A radio is the way that your device communicates with your mobile networking. (wifi, 3G/4G, etc) Different Radio versions (numbers) work better for different people. Most developers will release a matched radio with their ROMs, which is usually what works best for them. Depending on your area, different radios may work better for you. Ultimately concerning radios, Your Mileage WILL vary. it's one of the other big trial and error pieces to flashing custom ROMs.

Radio Number/Version is the version of ur radio. This is signal related.
So when updates come out they typically update the
radio and make the signal strength better.
This is something to be careful with, when changing ROMs
make sure that the some you are about to change into
supports ur radio version.
When u use ClockWork Mod to backup it will backup your current settings. So if u backup it consists of your rom , apps, settings, etc. so if u restore that then everything would be like the old one. So Yes, u would have the set everything back on the homescreen. Its ok, u will get used to that.
When they release android 2.3.5 you might have to "wipe" your phone and do it again. Maybe, depending on your rom, you might be able to flash on top of 2.3.4
H-Boot is similar to the Bios of the computer. And you know how carefully you have to be to change that.
But the H-Boot version that the 1st sticky says allows changing of certain things, thus allowing you to have root.
Feel free to ask away, im here to help you

lol. you posted both while i was writing up my response.
Its good though, because then the OP will get to read 2 times as much, which will make him even better at the terminology and the process
Lol. I'm just trying to be helpful so i can get to posting on the Dev. forums. There are plenty of easy questions there...
Appreciating the help guys =] Starting to understand a bit better!
So when i flash a new ROM, i must flash a new Radio? If i flash the recommended radio, how likely am i to get a good signal? And if im getting poor signal, i just have to keep trying new Radios? ( I Heard flashing radios is one of the ways you can brick your device)
Also with CWM - When the backup is made... do i have to keep it on the Sd card? Or can i move it to the computer so it takes up less space?
And if i understand correctly - CWM basically creates a backup just incase things go wrong you can always revert back?
... If i use titanium backup, what benefits does that bring over CWM? - Is it worth the money?
Thanks again

Also, how do i find my hboot version?
Ive started trying to get S-Off... just be reading ahead, it says that Custom ROMs come with root already? Does that mean i just need CWM with S-Off to flash a ROM? Or do i need to Root + Do the Super-Cid thing?

- Hold the power button, untill you get Shut Down, Airplane Mode or Restart.
- Click on Restart then Yes.
- Wait until all the lights on your device turn off.
- Hold the Vol. Down Button until a white screen shows.
There you'll find HBOOT-XXXXXX
This is your HBOOT version.
To get to your OS again:
- Make sure FASTBOOT is hightlighted.
- Press the <Power> button.
- Go to REBOOT by pressing Vol. Down.
- Press the <Power> button.
Hope it helps

You don't need Root to install a custom Root.
Just S-OFF, CWM and SuperCID I believe..
Just note down your old CID before writing the new SuperCID as you may need it later if you want to flash RUU and afraid of doing something wrong
Later on, if you want to flash RUU (Rom Upgrade Utility) without the fear of flashing a wrong one, you can just write the old CID to your device again
Check this post to know more
Sorry for the silly amount of posts... i cant find how to delete them!
Just so you know - I've archieved S-Off now , and installed CWM successfully.
Am i ready to flash a ROM?
-Also i have save files in games... such as FF7 - FPse , which a really dont want to lose... is their anyway i can copy them/save them somewhere ?

To flash a ROM, you mean Stock ROM (RUU) or Custom ROM?
If Custom Rom, please read my post #13 then do the SuperCID thing as you will need it for custom ROM..
About your saved games, the only way I know you can backup your saved data with is using Titanium Backup, which can be found in the Market.
Obviously, if you still don't know what you're doing, research more and then do whatever you want.
I take no responsibilities about anything that may happen to your phone using any of the methods above.
Good luck

I posted all the instructions in the other link I posted.
You'll find CID: XXXXX, keep this code with you, in-case you need it later for installing RUU and confused about which one to use.

That's exactly what happened to me when I backed up.
I think you should ignore it, as it is trying to backup an extension in the SD-Card, as you can re-partition your SD-Card using CWM as I understand.
I would be pleased if someone explained to me what exactly sd-ext is and what I'm missing
Good day to you all

Ignoring it is ok. sd-ext not being backed up is most likely an indicator that an EXT4 formatted portion of your SD card was not found. By default, your SD card is formatted as FAT32 because of its universal acceptance by all OSs. Some users report a performance boost/personal preference toward EXT4, YMMV.

Most importantly, ClockworkMod does not back up your SD card. that is something you have to do manually on your computer, should you choose to do so. CWM is only responsible for backing up the internal storage of the phone that can be changed or wiped by ROMs (or mike1986's SuperWipe.) ROMs shouldn't change the contents of the SD card.
Hi everybody. I'm starting a new thread because there are quite a few issues on this phone and I wanted your help in understanding them.
I'm using an Orange HTC desire S which I bought from a local market in India. This was about six months back and it picked up my Vodafone sim easily so i presumed it had some kind of Sim unlocker.
PROBLEM 1
Fast forward to a few days back when I thought getting root access would be fun and would enable many more options. I booted into recovery mode and here is where the first problem kicks in.
When I boot using the volume + power button option, my phone tells me it's S-OFF and then proceeds(on its own) to a different menu. It shows two options only.
1. Device info
2. Clean S58 data
There's no way at all to return to the previous screen here on. It gets stuck here because option 1 gives me general data about the phone and option 2 runs what seems like the sim unlock problem, tells me there's no update and returns to the same menu. I'm always(2 attempts) left with only the battery pull option which invariably clears all the data on my phone and works like a hard reset.
I also tried this without the memory card and got stuck at the black screen with the red exclamation mark.
Can someone tell me what's wrong here and what I need to do to get root access.
PROBLEM 2
This is more of a confusion I face. Most of my friends using the Desire S have got the sense 3.0 update but my phone is still running on 2.1 and tells me it is up to date. On the forum, most people seem to have received the 2.3.5 and the 3.0 update. Why am I not getting it?
Is it because i'm not on the orange network or is it something else(like s off)?
What do i need to do to get the updates in India?
Thanks for reading.
Can someone tell me what's wrong and how I should proceed?

Sukrit, most of your answers are within your questions. I've highlighted them in Red...
First of all, just because you purchased it in India (Somewhere like Gaffar Market, etc) doesn't mean it's from HTC India. HTC software update doesn't look at what sim card you're using to allot upgrades to your phone... It localises you depending on the software shipped with the phone.
Secondly, your phone is an Orange branded device and unlocking stuff is usually more troublesome and dangerous on branded devices... As for the solution to PROBLEM 1 as posted by you, look inside your sd card for a file named PG88IMG.zip. If you find it, back it up on your pc and delete it from the sd card. See if that helps, as having an update zip on your memory card will force your bootloader to flash it whether you want it to do so or not... Let's call it the phone's "instinct" to flash the PG88IMG.zip if it finds it while in bootloader.
I also suggest you read the Guides in the general section carefully, especially the warning about branded devices... But since you say you're s-off, half the battle is already won and i think you'll be okay to root.
As for the battery pull, it does not reset your phone data my friend... your data will all be safe and all it does is a soft reset, NOT a hard reset. You are more likely to fry your eMMC chip doing that... and that would be a MUCH bigger problem, as i'm kinda sure your phone doesn't even have a distant cousin called "warranty"
Let me know if you found an update zip on your sd card like i mentioned above, and we'll pick it up from there.
Cheers. Hope i can be of help.
Thanks a lot for answering and helping me with my problem.

I've understood this but does it also mean that unless i'm on the Orange network, I won't get the update?
Also, great guess on where I got the phone from

I understand. There are two files that i think are relevant.
1. HTC-ANDROID-GOLD_CARD. I haven't put this in as far as I remember. Size-0 bytes.
2. PG88DIAG.nbh. I'm presuming this is the file you were talking about? There is a slight difference in name, though.
I also suggest you read the Guides in the general section carefully, especially the warning about branded devices... But since you say you're s-off, half the battle is already won and i think you'll be okay to root.

This is what is weird,Amit. If I pull the battery when the phone is at the device info and clear s58 data screen, it always hard resets. All software/contacts,basically anything on the phone memory disappears. Why does this happen?
If you think this behavior is normal then i'll remove the file in the memory card and try again.
Thanks a ton!

Why don't we start by removing the PG88DIAG file from the sd card (back it up on PC), and also the GOLD CARD file, which obviously was used by the nefarious Gaffar guys to s-off your phone...,
This will hopefully give you access to bootloader and fastboot so you can root and flash a custom recovery. Once you've done that, you can flash whatever ROM you like.
I'd recommend Endymion if you want the best possible sense 3.5 experience...
Let me know if removing those two files allows you to remain in bootloader and access recovery...
Hey Amit. Removing the two files has worked fine. Thanku
What steps should i take now to get root access?
Or, can I just load the orange ROM available on the other thread without rooting?

Congrats buddy!
Firstly, you cannot flash a custom ROM without a custom recovery...
To obtain root access, you can use Gingerbreak.apk
I suggest you just flash a custom recovery (I personally recommend 4EXT Recovery) via fastboot or you can simply use 4EXT Recovery updater app (free) or 4EXT Recovery Control app (paid, check my signature for link), then take a nandroid backup of your current ROM, and then Flash a Custom ROM.
You don't have to stick to Orange ROMs... you can flash whatever ROM you want... I highly recommend Endymion, but the choice is ultimately yours to make...
Glad you got this far... happy times ahead for you!!

Yup, everything seems to be fine. Go ahead and root your phone... flash 4EXT Recoery via 4EXT Recovery Updater app, and then after taking a backup, and doing a full wipe, flash whatever ROM you want to...
Read the instructions and guides carefully in the general and Development section prior to this, and remember...DO NOT REMOVE THE BATTERY WHILE THE PHONE IS STILL ON! It's better to try other methods to reboot it, or even let it discharge over time and switch off by itself, rather that attempt to pull battery. Othert than this, i think you're ok to flash a new ROM, and enter the amazing world of custom ROMs...

Congrats!
If you want a Sense 3 ROM, go for Hyperion
For Sense 3.5 (My personal favourite) go for Endymion
For crazy theming options, you can try MIUI from MIUI.us
If you like plain stock look.... Cyanogenmod.
I would however still recommend Endymion (Though i like v2.2 better than v3)
P.S. Just a friendly question... Gaffar me kitne ka pada ye phone? I bought my phone new...but my wife wants one now and i don't want to put in the money for a new phone from a mobile store...
i'll get endymion then, should follow your advise since you've helped so much. Do i need to make any changes to the hboot/radio?
and should i get both 3.1 and the add on package?
yaar, it'll be a lot cheaper now. when i bought it tab market price was around 22.5. I got it for 16.5 with box and accessories. At that time, there were only two shops that had the desire S and this was the only one that functioned properly.
i'm pretty sure you can get it for less than 13k now.
I'll try n get you the shop's name and number. i've bought both the desire and the desire s from him and they've worked well.

I'll try n get you the shop's name and number. i've bought both the desire and the desire s from him and they've worked well.

You can get the v3.1 without the addon initially. See how it works for you... Then you can flash the addon package if you feel like Modding the ROM. I'm still on v2.2 because I didn't feel the need to upgrade.
Please do get me the number of your guy in gaffar as I'm planning to get a galaxy note as well as a desire s...
Beamed from the Dark Side using xda premium.
Hey. Looked everywhere for the number but I just can't find it. Awfully sorry, man.
I don't know if you've ever been to Gaffar before but just incase you haven't,do ensure that you buy from a proper shop and not people with cabinets full of phones. These guys will offer you cheaper prices but will also disappear in a couple of days.
There are only 5-6 big shops which sell import phones, most of them are decent and will offer you a week or two worth of hardware guarantee. Enough for you to atleast test the phone out.

I have been flashing for a while, and although not a pro by any means, I'm not a noobie either. I've looked for similar issues from others and have yet to find one that addresses this point specifically: I downloaded and attempted to utilize the PG58IMG.ZIP and repeatedly get the PU Fail. I saw another post relating to the issue being when you either accidentally or purposely try to flash it MORE THAN ONCE. I believe this is the mistake I made ( I was dumb enough to flash while riding in a car ). The issue is this: If I try to enter recovery from the 'outside' ; i.e. a completely turned off phone, with vol and on/off, I cannot use recovery. It will repeatedly make me go through the process of trying and failing to install this over and over. So, am I screwed? To tell the truth, I have no other issues with the phone, running ARHD 3.6.9, 4.1.9, or 5.0.2 as well as RCmix 3.5 v10 or ICS. BUt, if something happens to keep me from accessing recovery from within 4EXT, I will have a real problem. Now, I've seen the new RUU posting for ICS and would like to try it. Will this fix my problem? Is updating my HBOOT the answer? Is there any other way that I'm not thinking of? I don't often start threads with questions becuase I'm willing to find the answer through searching, but haven't found any direct answers to this particular part of the problem. Any help would be appreciated...

Silly question perhaps but have you deleted PG58IMG from your SD card and tried then?

No, as a matter of fact, I re-downloaded it to be sure the one I had wasn't corrupted somehow. Still, no luck.

I don't believe I do. Tried accomplishing that this morning, but permission denied. I flash many ROMs and add-ons, but have only flashed the original RUU to S-off and root.
Just to update, I activated the superCID from my laptop, no problems. Went with the new ICS RUU, and so far everything is sweet! Going to re-flash my ARHD 5.0.2 and then see what I have.
Well, ICS RUU, re-rooted, clockworkmod re-installed, busybox, and 4EXT. Flashed my ARHD 5.0.2 restore, and now I'm running HBOOT 1.20, Android 4.0.1, and it's all very smooth. Impressed! Apparently, if you get an update fail on your HBOOT, you can solve it by going to the next level, so to speak. Anyone out there have any viable suggestions on how to 'recover' their recovery without having to resort to this, I'm sure it would be good information to have. Otherwise, case closed!

Tried both with no success. Even thought about downgrading to utilize an older HBOOT like some recommended. Decided if I had to go 'up' or 'down', I'd rather go up. Glad it worked out well. I saw some had a serious problem with other recent releases. Mike1986 is at the top of his game, so I'm grateful! Long Live ARHD! Just to be fair, RCMix does great work as well, its just an apples and oranges thing I guess. (No disrespect to any other developers, these are the only ones I've used )
UPDATE: The ROM itself is good and obviously has great potential, but I am having quite a few issues. It was suggested that System Tuner Pro would force open CPU 2 and give a boost, but it would not view my system as rooted, even after re-boots and permission fixes. 4EXT would freeze and FC in any operation, as would SD Speed Increase, Set CPU, and even Superuser. Font Installer didn't freeze the way some complained it did, but for me it would go through the required re-boot and have no change. Tried to backup with Clockworkmod (since 4EXT was failing), and the backup failed. SOooooo, in my opinion, it is good at this point for a daily user if you do JUST THAT, use it for common daily functions. But, for me at least, anything having to do with increasing performance or customization creates a problem. Not the end of the world, except that I'm a customization junkie, so its a bit of a deal breaker for me. One thing, a lot of people complained of wallpaper issues and failures; the DIY ownskin I was using had no issues. Then again, the wallpaper for the lockscreen DID fail. Oh well.... I know it'll get better. Restoring back for a while ....Mike 1986, RCMix, and all other hard working devs, keep up the good work, Getting better every day...
The last post was by no means any kind of a critique, I dabble but have no experience at this point as to what it takes to create these works, so I hope no one takes it as such. Just thought I would share my various experiences so others can gauge their own. I think that those who take the time to work these out are very talented and deserve praise regardless of glitches that happen without warning.

All fair comments. The devs do a great job on here but the sharing of experience and information by non-devs like you and me is also important
I have the same problem with Fail-PU
Nobody could help but finally i managed to take the risk and it paid off thankfully.
It is the easiest way to unroot, remove superuser, revolutionary and to restore hboot back to normal and S-On again, to get official updates including ICS.
Download the attachment "usmanxhmed.rar", it has Android Flasher and FlashENGHBOOT.
Attach your phone to PC with USB cable, make sure you have HTC fastboot drivers installed.
Open Android Flasher and select bootloader and browse to the file FlashENGHBOOT which you downloaded in file "usmanxhmed.rar", boot phone into fastboot and click flash.
It will remove REVOLUTIONARY **** from the phone.
Now download your specific RUU from this link http://www.filefactory.com/f/c64d333a2755a421/ i was unsure which is my RUU for the phone as i bought it second hand, my phone was unbranded, i matched the software version and radio version in my software information of the phone and downloaded the specific RUU.
After flashing the RUU my Desire S became factory fresh and back to S - ON and updated my phone with Android 2.3.5 and Sense 3 and hopefully/ may be i will get ICS in future as well

ORIGINAL POST
(Please Don't tell me to search the forums, as my situation is bit different and i am newbie here)
I have Desire S (I bought used from Market and sadly it has S-off with Revolutionary and Superuser App installed)
Problem is that, i get notification of update 1.47.401 and it gets download, when it tried to install after reboot i see android icon with triangle exclamation mark.
Now my situation is different because i have a feeling despite S-off i am on official rom which is 2.3.3, so i want to jump to 2.3.5 and later on official ICS
So i think if i just remove revolutionary and root and S-off to S-On may be, i may able to install the update as i already have official or stock rom in my phone i think.
I have android 2.3.3
software number 1.28.401
Update that i download is 1.47.401
Revolutionary S 0ff
hboot 6.98
I dont even know which hboot i need to get this update to inslall or what i need to do? is there any caring guy who can help beside just taunting as i have seen here?
Forget update, simply flash a custom ROM
Would also suggest that you out ENG boot loader over the alpha Rex one
See INDEX (in my signature) for links
Swyped from my DesireS
@poster
for u to conviniently use htc OTA updates u need to S-ON again
or just forget it and install custom ROMs like Ben just said
cheers
Thanks both of you for replying, its the beauty of God that we all have different mind sets, unlike most guys here, i am a man who would prefer official/stock rom and would prefer to have official updates instead of amateur ROM. May be because
- It causes far less phones to brick
- Manufacturer understands device better then amateur developers
- i see no special advantage of custom ROM over stock rom
- i can live life without root and s off as i can have more secure android experience
- Manufacturer invests may be billions to understand the best combination of hardware and software may be that's they don't usually port gingerbread on g1.
- Official update can remove few bugs where as most custom ROMs have bugs as we often read in almost all the posts here thst camera or wifi or tethering is not working yet and so on
- Customs ROMs can over heat the hardware and can damage it as they lack proper hardware knowledge, training and research.
There are endless points due to which some poeple like to stay stock, unlike most here and by above points i am not saying lovers of custom that they are wrong or not demotivating them at all, just sharing my own thoughts due to which i think i better have stock rom in normal circumstances.
So is there any (expert) guy who can help me to resolve my problem instead of telling me to get custom ROM, which i know my self, and which i said i don't want. Its ok not having 2.3.5 but i will be unlucky not to have official ICS if it gets available on my phone.
Wow! where to start...I'll leave that for now (although you may wish to re-consider your use of the word amateur as its rather insulting).
I believe that you need to flash the (98.2) ENG hboot over your Revolutionay (6.98).
See previous post of instructions here
You need to know if the phone is branded or un-branded and from which country/region its from in order to download the correct RUU.
I'd then suggest that you download your stock RUU and run that from the PC which will reset your recovery to stock and un-root you phone, you should then be in a position to request an OTA.
@usmanxhmed
A simple question comes to my mind after reading your post: why are you posting your issue here instead asking HTC support? I hope they will be as half friendly as Ben is. Thanks to God of course

Well? support from HTC? firstly they may not bother to reply being HTC, not the best in customer service like any big company, secondly my phone is rooted, so its not there fault for them to fix it, thirdly here i have common guys just like me, may be someone with situation just like me.
Yeah use of word Amateur sounds rude here, bit insulting too, but if we are willing to face the reality, that is truth, they are not developing to earn living, they are not manufacturing devices giving warranties, instead saving there soul in every post we are not responsible, as they are greatly unsure about the validity of everything they are teaching/guiding here and on and on and on, so all of this must be categorized as Amateur.
See the people of Revolutionary? after ruining/screwing the warranty and OTA of all phones, they are unable to give simple guide to undo there mess? Most procedures here are with warnings and posts users that they bricked there devices? With custom ROMs no processor is converted from single core to dual y magic so i should want custom ROM so badly.
It may work, it may brick phone, my screen stuck there, it stuck here, camera not working, wifi not working, lagging? For a poor guy like me who can't change phone weekly these things are somewhat burden. Nokia/HTC/Apple will give one click software updates and they will not tell you do it on your own risk, you may brick your phone, they online tell you if you disconnect cable than your device may not work, it does not mean they are brick prove, but more reliable thats why they are professional and brothers here are amateurs.
I don't know, i just bought used phone with revolutionary root and i can't install update even after downloading it, i don't know my phone belongs to which compnay, which RUU i need, which hboot i need out of 20 out there, single mistake can brick my phone without even letting it fall on ground from my hand, let me sleep and live with 2.3.3

For someone after assistance, I do find you're attitude negative and insulting. The forum is full of various guides and sticky threads which contain most of the information that you require, your problem is not unique and therefore had been solved many times over in the past and therefore is well documented here on the forum.
While you may be correct in that many people here at Xda are either young and starting out or merely interested novices and therefore could be classed as ameteurs
I think that you'll find that the developers of the most popular ROMs are in fact professional programmers who code here, in their spare time for the benefit of others.

I have nothing against the love for developing, that people have over here, obviously its a skill, but do let me know they develop for the benefit of whom or i mean what are the benefits of developing to a normal consumer.
Over here i found good guides for revolutionary and rooting but there is no detailed/complete guide to undo the stuff, in fact the most of famous guide to undo now claims that i closed this topic, you can find that forum everywhere here which most people link to me, the guy says he is sick of brick phones so he is taking off the guide.
No guide tells for which stock version which hboot is required, nobody tells which RUU version i need when i don't know my Desire belongs to which country, as i cannot find where to locate it.
The only thing i understand here revolutionary dirt is most painful to undo as i remember i unrooted my xperia x10mini with almost one click with some software like superone by connecting to my PC.
Now i understand what benefits developers are giving to consumers here, which can be
- Loss of warranty
- Plenty of dead phones
- One developer narrates if your phones bricks during my guide and if you will complain from me, i will laugh on you, sure you must
- Robbing you from facility of One Click OTA
- OTA usually remove bugs and adds functionality so you can't have it
- And on and on and on
According to my thoughts, xda developers should be bringing solutions to current problems and limitations, instead of doing above mentioned thing to already working phone, Now i think my Old Symbian phone was better at least i could get OTA just by changing product code in a second with ease.
Anyways thanks for everyone who tried to help and i am sorry for being bit cheeky and playful here.

Let me see....
- Overall (way) faster phone
- Batterylife that doubles or more (this alone is worth a custom rom!)
- OTA updates are still added to the custom roms, so no benefit for you
- Sometimes bugs that the 'great HTC developers' left in are removed
- Lot`s of 'under the hood' tweaks that make your phone faster, safer and better
- Garbage from HTC that is removed
- Nice tweaks in screenbrightness, wakeup with volume keys etc. etc.
Since you are already s-off with revolutionary i can`t see why you want to take the hard and tricky way to go back to s-on. (The OTA reason is not legit and your warranty is already gone)
Just fyi, there are also 100% stock untweaked up-to-date roms you can flash with ClockWorkMod Recovery...

Hi,
I can understand you. I was thinking nearly same like you when I bought my DS. After 6-7 months later of purchase my DS, I decided to S-OFF and flash a custom rom. First I flashed Endymion (than 2-3 roms too but used them for 1-2 hours) and I started to like my DS again. It took months for Sense 3 update and we're still waiting for ICS for ages. I can understand about your worries but XDA's Dev community working harder than manufacturer's devs. Getting new updates very quickly, and there lots of ICS roms by devs. So you should respect them.
You can flash Eng Hboot (this topic) then download official stock 2.10.401.8 rom from here. Follow instructions after connect your DS to PC
Thanks for helping and being kind, my rude language was partially explained by my current rude life may be and thanks for tolerating me. Custom ROMs may be cool, but don't you guys think the % of bricked phones are more here? for example if i download and install a ROM from clockwork by following instructions, can i be next to sure if i will boot up next time?
I may have to have it the hard way or i will have to ignore android versions and just use the phone for the sake of phone like an Old Man or a Girl.
Yet i hope, men at Revolutionary or at XDA could bring one easy and assured way to undo revolutionary and its root.
Hi Guys,
I'm trying to get a 'stable' rom for a phone I've given to my daughter (Evita / Telstra one XL).
I've tried a heap of things, tried to s-off, change radio files etc... Anyway, current status is that it's been unlocked, s-on, and I have twrp.. I'm using KickDroid XL v4.0.0 ROM, looks great, but the phone keeps on rebooting... Also loosing 3G signal, so have to reboot it quite a few times a day to resolve. (tired another rom, same problem, loss of 3g signal and multiple reboots during the day)
I'm sure it's got to do with the radio file, but can't seem to fix that. I've read 'so much!' information, but really confused now. I've tried to supercid it, unsuccessfully, tried to find the all-in-one toolking (bt it looks like its been removed)..
So, this is what I have when I boot it:
*** TAMPERED ***
*** UNLOCKED ***
EVITA PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-1.11.0000
RADIO-0.23a.32.09.29
OpenDSP-v28.1.0.32.0504
eMMC-boot
Jun 7 2012,13:10:34
TWRP recovery
2.6.3.0
htc one xl
Evita
Any help in how to (or if I should) get the radio/hboot up to hopefully resolve the loss of 3G?
I'm no expert, but not that dumb either. I follow instructions from the start, but most of the time it gets stuck half way (ie, when doing supercid, boots to the HTC logo, but won't go any further)..
Any help really appreciated.
The problem is not that the ROM is unstable, the ROM is perfectly stable if you meet the requirements. The problem is your current firmware version. You need to update to the 2.15 firmware package. It does state that very clearly in the "You Need" section in the beginning of the Kickdroid thread. Please search/research properly before posting in future, it's part of the XDA rules. This issue has been discussed extensively in every single Sense 5 ROM thread, plus this is probably the 100th thread like this in our Q&A section.

Why are you even giving your daughter a rooted/modded phone at all? Unless she has an understanding of what root means, its not a good idea. Does she even need anything except a bone stock phone?
thanks timmaaa, I appreciate you taking the time out to reply.
I'll do some more checking on firmware 2.15... I've honestly read about 5 hours last weekend on various threads... some lead to dead ends (it toolbox), some I can't get to work (supercid)... I tried this a couple of months ago, and almost bricked it, but managed to get twrp working...
Redpoint73, are you asking why give her a phone, or why a rooted phone? The answer to the first one is that she is 11, and catches the bus to and from school. The phone is used in an emergency. I've rooted it to give her some new features, and because it was locked with Telstra and that is not the carrier we are using anymore (much cheaper options here than Telstra), so I needed to get rid of the firmware...
Overall, I appreciate any help. I actually run 5 forums (car related), and I fully understand noob's coming on and asking the same question week after week. Our forums have a lot less posts than this one (< 200,000), but we still have members, week in-week out, answering the same questions because they like to help, and because sometimes there is too much information out there to sift through, especially when somebody is willing to point you in the right direction with a friendly smile

Its pretty clear from my post that it was root/mod that I was referring to. Root has nothing to do with Subsidy (SIM) Lock, and the firmware has little to do with the carrier you are on (I've been using the German T-Mobile stock ROM for a while now, despite being on AT&T).
Of course its up to you to decide what you do with the phone. But you should consider (if you haven't already) the security risk of giving a rooted device to a user that knows little or nothing about such things. Even more so for s-off, which is necessary for the solution that timmaaa suggested.
My question has less to do with exactly "who" the phone is for. But more to the point, when people come on here saying they are modding the phone for "someone else" (be it mom, third cousin, or whatever), if that person isn't doing it for themselves, its pretty questionable whether they need such mods at all.
ok, thanks redpoint73..
I understand where you are coming from, and appreciate your comments.
Now, anybody else like to point me in the right direction (to a link to get the latest firmware, or a compatible one working)?

You serious? timmaaa already told you where to find it.
Since I'm feeling charitable right now, here it is, complete with step-by-step instructions (only need to follow Posts #2 and 4): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2485865
The original thread where Turge posted his firmware package (see under "OPTIONAL", s-off is required before doing this): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=45072132&postcount=1
Or just install the Beastmode kernel (S-off not required): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2165880
thanks mate. I appreciate the charity, I really do I'm trying not to be a nob.. I'm actually having another go this morning... I've got win 8.1 (yeah, I know) so trying to get the latest driver to work is a pain.... Just trying x_factory windows, backups up twice, but then doesn't run the next command (to change CID)...
Anyway, thanks again. I'll persist on...
