[Q] HBOOT update PU fail - recovery wont work from 'outside' - HTC Sensation

I have been flashing for a while, and although not a pro by any means, I'm not a noobie either. I've looked for similar issues from others and have yet to find one that addresses this point specifically: I downloaded and attempted to utilize the PG58IMG.ZIP and repeatedly get the PU Fail. I saw another post relating to the issue being when you either accidentally or purposely try to flash it MORE THAN ONCE. I believe this is the mistake I made ( I was dumb enough to flash while riding in a car ). The issue is this: If I try to enter recovery from the 'outside' ; i.e. a completely turned off phone, with vol and on/off, I cannot use recovery. It will repeatedly make me go through the process of trying and failing to install this over and over. So, am I screwed? To tell the truth, I have no other issues with the phone, running ARHD 3.6.9, 4.1.9, or 5.0.2 as well as RCmix 3.5 v10 or ICS. BUt, if something happens to keep me from accessing recovery from within 4EXT, I will have a real problem. Now, I've seen the new RUU posting for ICS and would like to try it. Will this fix my problem? Is updating my HBOOT the answer? Is there any other way that I'm not thinking of? I don't often start threads with questions becuase I'm willing to find the answer through searching, but haven't found any direct answers to this particular part of the problem. Any help would be appreciated...

So if you flash a lot of RUU ,you must have supercid?

Silly question perhaps but have you deleted PG58IMG from your SD card and tried then?

No, as a matter of fact, I re-downloaded it to be sure the one I had wasn't corrupted somehow. Still, no luck.

I don't believe I do. Tried accomplishing that this morning, but permission denied. I flash many ROMs and add-ons, but have only flashed the original RUU to S-off and root.

Just to update, I activated the superCID from my laptop, no problems. Went with the new ICS RUU, and so far everything is sweet! Going to re-flash my ARHD 5.0.2 and then see what I have.

Well, ICS RUU, re-rooted, clockworkmod re-installed, busybox, and 4EXT. Flashed my ARHD 5.0.2 restore, and now I'm running HBOOT 1.20, Android 4.0.1, and it's all very smooth. Impressed! Apparently, if you get an update fail on your HBOOT, you can solve it by going to the next level, so to speak. Anyone out there have any viable suggestions on how to 'recover' their recovery without having to resort to this, I'm sure it would be good information to have. Otherwise, case closed!

Tried both with no success. Even thought about downgrading to utilize an older HBOOT like some recommended. Decided if I had to go 'up' or 'down', I'd rather go up. Glad it worked out well. I saw some had a serious problem with other recent releases. Mike1986 is at the top of his game, so I'm grateful! Long Live ARHD! Just to be fair, RCMix does great work as well, its just an apples and oranges thing I guess. (No disrespect to any other developers, these are the only ones I've used )

UPDATE: The ROM itself is good and obviously has great potential, but I am having quite a few issues. It was suggested that System Tuner Pro would force open CPU 2 and give a boost, but it would not view my system as rooted, even after re-boots and permission fixes. 4EXT would freeze and FC in any operation, as would SD Speed Increase, Set CPU, and even Superuser. Font Installer didn't freeze the way some complained it did, but for me it would go through the required re-boot and have no change. Tried to backup with Clockworkmod (since 4EXT was failing), and the backup failed. SOooooo, in my opinion, it is good at this point for a daily user if you do JUST THAT, use it for common daily functions. But, for me at least, anything having to do with increasing performance or customization creates a problem. Not the end of the world, except that I'm a customization junkie, so its a bit of a deal breaker for me. One thing, a lot of people complained of wallpaper issues and failures; the DIY ownskin I was using had no issues. Then again, the wallpaper for the lockscreen DID fail. Oh well.... I know it'll get better. Restoring back for a while ....Mike 1986, RCMix, and all other hard working devs, keep up the good work, Getting better every day...

The last post was by no means any kind of a critique, I dabble but have no experience at this point as to what it takes to create these works, so I hope no one takes it as such. Just thought I would share my various experiences so others can gauge their own. I think that those who take the time to work these out are very talented and deserve praise regardless of glitches that happen without warning.

All fair comments. The devs do a great job on here but the sharing of experience and information by non-devs like you and me is also important

I have the same problem with Fail-PU

[Q] From stock to ARHD

Hi all,
I tried some searching, before I started this one. And I allready want to offer my apologizies if I overlooked something. There is so much info on these boards.
Anyway. I have a Sensation which I've S-off'ed with the Revolutionary tool. After that I changed CID and installed a stock HTC ROM (I came from Vodafone branded).
I've read trhough Mike's thread for ARHD and instructions on installing it, but it only mentions that I should flash it using the Recovery that's coming with the Revolutionary tool.
Should I run the Revolutionary tool again (I allready gained S-Off) and install the the recovery, or is it just possible to install the recovery alone? And if so, where can I find the version that comes with Revolutionary?
Thanks in advance.
Since you are S-Off just download the ARHD zip and place it on your SD card. Then open bootloader...etc and it will install

Hi,
Your best bet is to download 4EXT(check my sig),which is like a next generation recovery tool, and install it.
Place the new ROM on the root of your sd card, together with a super wipe zip.
Then ,from your homescreen you can open 4EXT ,go to recovery, install zip from your sd card.
Choose the super wipe zip, followed by the new ROM.
Hit proceed and wait.
Thanks man,
I'll have to read up a bit. I'm kinda new to all this. Since everyone was mentioning CWM I thought it was the only way to do it.
But if I'm not mistaken, I install EXT4 while running OS? And next time it boots, you have a different recovery. I'm used to only seeing HBOOT

Hi,
Go to settings >power, and make sure fast boot is UNCHECKED.
This will enable you to enter recovery.
Install EXT4 while running OS.
One of the best aspects of 4EXT ,is that you do almost everything from your home screen.
Wow, thanks for the information. I appreciate that.
Will go at work with it and get ARHD to run, instead of the stock one. The reactions on the releases at Mike's thread are all really good. And it's nice that is has stock look and Sense.
Only doubting on which one to install, the 3.x.x or the 4.x.x. I believe it has to do with Sensation vs. Sensation XE ROM, but if Beats Audio is the only difference (which I guess, is not ) than it shouldn't matter which one I take.
Any suggestions on it? I'm just an average user.

Hi,
I suggest you start with 3.6.5 ,which is a Sense 3.0 ROM ,and see how you get on.
4.1.6 is a Sense 3.5 ROM,but it is still a test ROM,and therefore not 100% functional.

[Q] HTC Inspire Stability Issues

Info:
Inspire 4g rooted running Honey3D from the ROM Manager (Android 2.3.3 Sense 3.0)
Before I rooted the device when I upgraded to 2.3.3 from the official AT&T ROM I started having issues with device stability. I figured if I rooted and installed another ROM it would improve, but much to my dismay it hasn't. I will be doing simple things like texting and the device will lock up and require me to take the battery out to reboot. It has gotten worse in the past couple of weeks and I am hoping I can get some help here. It's so bad I *gasp* ordered a refurbed iPhone from Gamestop...but I am hoping I can get some help and be able to bring this device to it's former glory!
I have also noticed I cannot get through a full day with battery. Is this something that has to do with GB on the Inspire? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Well I know the Inspire has a pretty sub-standard battery life before rooting but as for instability, you my friend probably have some kind of a hardware issue. Typically, most lock-up issues I see are from bad flashes and unstable roms, in this case it seems you had some issues before the root which leads me to believe you have either some hardware issue or some kind of a compatibility issues. When you flash a new rom, make sure to always full wipe (wipe data, cache, dalvik cache, battery stats) before you flash a new rom. If you haven't done that already, try it and re flash the rom. May I suggest trying Bindroid for testing purposes as I know they have a very stable sense ROM.

I noticed that you said you are running Honey3D from ROM Manager? Does that mean you downloaded the ROM in app, through ROM Manager? That COULD be your problem, as I know sometimes downloads through the app aren't downloaded properly, completely, etc.
Try getting onto a desktop computer, downloading the ROM form the XDA site, and move it to your SD card, and THEN boot into recovery, full wipe, etc.
Try that. Let me know
I had similar issues on my stock rom (unrooted). ATT sent me a new battery as it was still under the 1yr warranty. That didn't solve the problem so they sent me a new refurb (with another new battery). No more problems - plus I now have two spare batteries. But as long as you are rooted, they are going to think that is the problem.
If it comes to the point where you have to send the phone back to ATT, just download the RUU from the HTC website, and update the phone back to the Stock Gingerbread 2.3 update. That will remove root and you'll be set
I will try these solutions tonight and see if I can get any of them to work.
I really do appreciate everyone's input. If I have to return to stock, is there anything special I need to do to unroot my phone? Like turning S-OFF back on ON?
Thanks again!

I believe there is a tool somewhere in the dev section to get everything back to stock..but more or less you'll need the stock RUU from HTC. I have never had to go back to stock so this is simply based on what I've seen/red and not so much based on experience lol
How do I check to see if S-OFF is back to S-ON? That's the main thing I am concerned with. Don't want them knowing I rooted and telling me it a no deal on a replacement if it comes to that.

boot into HBOOT and at the top there should be something that says S-OFF (if you're S-OFF), to be honest I've had my phone rooted since day 1 so I have no idea what it actually says when its S-ON, I'm going to make a bold assumption, lol, that it would just say S-ON if it were S-ON...
Edit: the top line in HBOOT if S-Off should read something like "ACE PVT SHIP S-OFF"
Any suggestions on ROM's?
I know it comes down to personal preference but I do value the opinion of others

[SOLVED] Mercyless Sensation Bootloop

I've been on 3.24 firmware for a while, but wanted to revert as ICS has some minor issues. Good fun trying it though.
Anyway, I'm bootlooping like grandma's butt on a barstool.
I have crawled the forum and tried just about any/everything.
All I did was trying to run an incompatible ROM (gb) on the 3.24 firmware. Fair enough.. it doenst work. So I flashed 3.12. Nothing still... then I flashed 1.17 and the radio. Now no rom, ICS nor GB, will boot eithout looping. (Even when going back to 3.24 and ICS) I've tried downgrading hboot from 27 to 17. And yes, for every try I completely wipe (4ext, format all excpt fat32) and superwipe and also wipe cache and Dalvik. I've reinstalled every rom I have on my sd as well as trying to restore a couple of backups I have.
Nothing. Nada. Zilch. Still the same bootloop.
EDIT: 4Ext Recovey seems unaffected and works
Try starting again. What I recommend is you try downgrading the firmware and install a Stock RRU.

Why do people try to flash everything they can even remotely think of when something doesn't go as planned?
Probably the worst thing you can do... you're quite lucky you didn't brick your phone in the process.
If you want to use a GB ROM - flash a 1.17 Firmware from this link.
Superwipe
Install GB Rom.
Once you have that sorted and it's actually running (let it boot up completely at least ONCE!), you can flash the appropriate radio. (and please actually follow the instructons that came with it....!!!)
Just to confirm, I wasn't actually saying flash anything possible.. I basically wanted him to do what you just gave him the link to, however I'm not on my computer at the moment so it's a little hard to multi-task and source a thread that has what they need in it. He could've found the answer to his question pretty easy anyway.

jaaystott was right on the money. I downloaded the stock RUU package and I extracted the rom.zip. Renamed it to PG58IMG, threw it on the sd and voila. This rom package contains everything to downgrade bootloader, radio and all the other components.
anazei...don't get cheeky until you've actually READ my post. Lol! But still big ups for all suggestions. Yours was absolutely on my list of plausible remedies and would probably have done the trick, had the circumstances been different. :-D
Thanks guys! Always prompt help and response on XDA! :-D
Now, let's get down to brass tax: Why wouldnt anazeis solution work? I did do exactly what he/she suggests. Which is flashing back down to 1.17. I can clearly see that the stock rom.zip flashes heaps of stuff. And the 3.24 as well. But trying to revert there was quite obviously a component still un-downgraded when flashing fw and radios separately. What am I missing out on?
Anyone?
Glad that I helped solved your problem
I have no idea why that didn't work, but all I can possibly think is maybe the firmware or HBOOT didn't downgrade or something like that..

Hi
Could you tell me how to extract the rom.zip from the RUU.exe ?
Thanks
You simply:
- start the exe file and just leave it running
- go to your user profile's temp folder. Something like C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Temp
- sort the folder by date and enter the most recent directory with a guid as name
- drop down to the next guid folder as well and voila. There it is.
- rename it and put it in the root of the sd and the bootloader will start sanitizing the Sensation gone sour.
Here's a method for Linux/MacOSX as well:
http://www.kennynet.co.uk/2010/06/24/extract-rom-zip-from-ruu-in-linux/
An easier way to extract it is to use something like 7zip or win rar and simply right click on the exe and extract

True that! Totally forgot but thats a really smooth way to do it as well. Thanks!
First, I just wanted to send a huge shout-out to cyb0rgb0rg and jaaystott for helping me solve a similar problem I had found myself all yesterday evening. THANK YOU! I am very new to installing custom ROMs on my phone. Rooted the phone yesterday, and I realize I must have, right off the bat, installed some firmware with my original rooting instructions that for whatever reason rendered the phone unable to boot. It specifically had to do with the audio output, since as the phone was booting (in any ROM I would attempt), the output of "adb logcat" would cycle over and over and over again through the loading the audio drivers.
It took me a second to find the stock RUUs, but a link is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074559
I was able to find the rom.zip in the Temp directory, as suggested, and although I was a little hesitant because the file was so huge, I flashed it with HBOOT. Success. Then, I loaded in the bootloader I started getting the hang of (teamwin 2.0). Flashed in the Virtuous Inquisition firmware, the Virtuous Inquisition ROM, and amazingly, the whole thing works. I'm going to try to retrace my steps to try to find out exactly which firmware caused this problem, but I suspect that many of the very similar problems I encountered while searching for a solution can be solved with this method.
So, thank you very much! You helped make a tired and desperate man very happy.

[Q] How to flash from Virtuous Inquisition v4.0.0 to HTC 4.0 with Sense 3.6?

I was quite happy with Virtuous Inquisition v4.0.0 until recent but now its hanging an crashing all the time and sometimes the display will not switch on (even after battery was out).
Now I want to try HTCs ICS to see if this is better (at least until CM9 is out). I had a backup from my stock HTC Gingerbread and tried to recover it (and then wanted to do the update over the air) but it is going into a reboot loop after the HTC jingle. I assume because it is expecting a different firmware.
Can someone point me to a GUIDE maybe? I'm sure I just have to flash the old firmware but how and which?

Thanks for your help I really appreciate it. I tried my old backup with 1.17 and it booted. But the ota update from HTC was only 9 MB and I was unable to install it. That's simple man, just use the 3.32 firmware from the link I gave u. It's 3.32 for all the new ics roms bro
Your were right, it worked. It's installing all my apps now. That never worked for me automatically. Maybe a good sign. I hope its more stable under heavy load then Virtuous and doesn't run out of RAM like HTC gingerbread did (and killing the launcher in the process) AND Virtuous did this also but it "only" got terribly slow then.
Well some have liked rom and then there's some, including myself, that didn't. I like the elegantica, I think that's how u spell it, or energy rom, but if u need anything else man don't hesitate to pm me or find me on gtalk

Possibly, not to sure

[Q] Can I Finally install the 2.3.5/3.0 OTA?

Hi all, my first post here.
Just got my Desire S this last week and have been on a bit of a rollercoaster ride. To sum it up:
Got phone
Discovered phone to be 1.47.401.4 with HBOOT 0.98.0002
Temp rooted with fre3vo
Used Revolutionary 0.4pre to S-OFF phone
Installed ClockworkModRecovery
Installed SU
Checked for updates and discovered OTA firmware update available
Tried to upgrade via OTA update but failed due to it not being compatible with CWMR
Tried to update using a 2.10 RUU but got stuck in a bootloop
Reflashed CMWR and restored my backed up pre-RUU install system
Flashed stock recovery from 1.47.401.4 RUU
Tried to upgrade via OTA update but failed due to stuck in bootloop
Flashed CMWR and restored system
Created a gold card and tried to return to stuck using 1.47.401.4 RUU but failed because RUU said nothing I was already at 1.47.401.4 :-/
Restored stock recovery, stock radio and stock HBOOT
As far as I can tell this should put me back where I started with the phone, other than having the superuser binaries in place.
My HBOOT looks normal (0.98.0002) and the radio restore went fine and the stock recovery is in place (Used bootloader to start recovery and got /!\ icon (I'm guessing because no OTA zip on device right now?)).
So, will it be safe for me to try and OTA now with a good chance of success?
If I get stuck in a bootloop will I have any way to recovery?
My advice, is to immediately stop trying to do OTA updates, as all you'll achieve is a locked down phone that can only be unlocked by HTCdev which will limit you
Use revolutionary to unlock s-off phone, flash a custom and never look back

Right, but that doesn't actually answer my question.
Also, I was under the impression that a bootloader unlocked with HTCdev can have a custom recovery image installed much the same as an S-OFF bootloader can.
What limitations are you talking about.
I don't particularly want to use a custom ROM because I am pretty happy with the basic Sense experience so far.
I have seen that there is a thread providing rooted "stock" roms but I want to know all my options, including OTA.

HTCdev unlocked phones aren't able to flash their boot partition from recovery, which means you'll require to seperately flash boot.img through fast boot every tine you change roms
You aren't able to change radios unless you're s-off
Look at the ROM that I'm on which if stock sense 3.5 plus lots of quality additions, stunning
As I said don't worry about ota just wait for the update to come then custom will be made from it that will be better

I'm a bit wary of custom roms. My previous phone was a SE X10 Mini Pro. Terrible phone with terrible stock software and most of the user-made roms for it are no better. The phone is only decent with a specific CM-based mod and other than that it was the pits.
I've been pretty happy with the basic Desire S rom so far. Is there anything which can honestly be classified as "must have" about any of the custom roms out there?
I'm quite happy to wait for the official ICS update and my wife will certainly rest easier knowing that I'm not about to totally mess up my new phone...
see this thread for evidence of the quality of the two best custom roms on this device
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1597729
The endymion ROM that I'm on is sense 3.5 so a step ahead of the sense 2.1 or 3.0 that you have used.
These roms are super stable, more so than stock.
Read the thread of the ROM for details see links in my signature

I see. You still haven't answered my original questions though:
Can I use an OTA update at this point?
If something goes wrong, what options do I have for recovery?
If I do decide to install Hyperion then thanks for the info on it but for now that's not actually what I'm asking...
Also, I have another question to add:
If I do decide to update via the official OTA update and then root my phone would I still be able to restore my HBOOT via the method described in this post. I used the described method to return my HBOOT from the Revolutionary version to 0.98.0002 with no issues but would the same trick work with the newer HBOOT? If the phone were updated via OTA and the HBOOT restored in this method would the official rom still boot (I ask because I found that even when I was able to get the OTA installed by restorting the stock recovery it bootlooped and I suspect this was becauce the OTA did not update the HBOOT...)

My advice, is to immediately stop trying to do OTA updates, as all you'll achieve is a locked down phone that can only be unlocked by HTCdev which will limit you
Use revolutionary to unlock s-off phone, flash a custom and never look back

He answered this question with first post.
But, what the hell do you want to achieve?? You have your device one week and messed it up more than I did in 10 months.
you cannot root and still get official ota updates. It's not possible. And anything you can get through ota update can be found here on xda too.
Please tell us what you want to do and remember that you cannot mix up rooting and ota updates.

Okay, this is really simple:
I want to be able to perform the OTA ICS update when it comes out.
I am not particularly interested in running a custom rom. I had my fill of non-working hardware and random instability with user roms for about 6 months with the X10 minipro.
Due to changing financial circumstances I need to be careful with this phone because if it dies or gets bricked I am not going to be able to get a new one that costs more than R500 until my next contractual upgrade which is going to be happening in 2 years time. I would prefer to have a useful phone for the next 2 years rather than a dumb block with no ability besides incoming/outgoing calls.
That means none of the horsing about I did with my X10 minipro.
You may now say "Hold on, why did you root your rom in the first place then?" and I can answer "Force of habit from using that X10 minipro which was terrible unless rooted and updated with a custom firmware and even then it was a pain".
Look, if you guys can honestly tell me in that XYZ custom rom is the best way to ensure that my phone stays in a working condition for the next 2 years and gets some form of update to ICS that works 100% and is stable then I will go the custom rom route.
My custom rom experience on the X10 minipro was not all bad, just mostly so which gives me pause when it comes to doing any more monkeying about.
Okay, no I can understand your worries and fears. And also what you where doing.
situation similar to me, I could afford that phone only with a 2 year contract, so I'm f*cked up if I f*ck it up
I had to go back to my Sony erricsson Walkman handy if I mess up the desire s.
Let me tell you something:
I think all roms offered in the development section are build very well. There are some unstable roms, but that is due to the lack of kernel 3.0.
but I can really tell you for sure that endymion (I'm talking about that one because it is the best/most stable sense 3.5 ROM out there for our device) is the most rock solid ROM you'll ever use. It has 100% fully working hardware, just like stock. And I am really talking about 100%, not 99
and it offers much more functionality than stock, due to allot of performance improvements and tweaks, that make it much smoother and stable than stock. I never had a reboot, freeze or anything like that in 4 months of heavy usage. You really can rely on lowveld and his work.
Of course you should be careful, it's an expensive device though.
I'm double reading everything and am very careful too, but I managed to never have any problem I couldn't solve myself. (forgot wipe before flashing etc... Nothing bad)
If you make a clean, correct install, there is nothing better you can do and you'll play a safe game.
BUT you will not be able to receive ota updates.
anyways, when the ics update is been released for our device, there will be a huge amount of roms based on that update. maybe this will be even before you can receive the update over the air. You will for sure be able to upgrade to ics, without using the ota update.
And those roms will quickly become same stable because of the kernel 3.0 will be available than.
That text was really hard for me, because of my limited English skills.. That's all I learned-by-doing
I hope I could help you a little bit
PS: endymion is what stock sense 3.5 should have been.

Thanks for the info guys. I guess I will give Endymion a try and keep my fingers crossed
Tell us if you succeeded and how you like it

Thanks, will do.
BTW, which recovery should I should for flashing Endymion?
Whichever recovery you have installed.
4EXT is the most popular here but a lot of people still use Clockwork Mod recovery.
If you don't plan to use recovery a lot then just stick to what you have. If you do flash a lot, like a lot of the people here, then you might like to use 4EXT touch for a nicer interface. Either way, it doesn't make a difference, both will end up achieving the same result.
If you haven't got a recovery installed all you have to do is download either ROM Manager or 4EXT Recovery Updater, install the app and flash the recovery. You probably know this though!
Anyway 4EXT can be found here:
http://4ext.net/
The paid version is available in the play store and CWM can be found in ROM manager from the play store.

I'm using 4ext but cwm does the job too. And you also can change the recovery later though.

Thanks for the advice guys. I installed Endymion this morning with no issues and am finding it very nice
