Does running a custom ROM eliminate "Carrier IQ"? - HTC Sensation

I have read that most of the custom ROM's on this forum removed the HTC "snooping" software, but now the news is reporting an equally invasive (potentially) issue with something called CarrierIQ. For those who dont know it basically logs every keystroke, website, duration of call, location, etc. and sends it to your carrier for "analysis". A pretty shocking video is at the link for those who are interested. So my question is, does running a custom ROM prevent my carrier from getting all this information?

I believe AOSP/source does not have CarrierIQ, and neither does CyanogenMod.

There is no Carrier IQ on the HTC Sensation at T-Mobile US.

Multiple people have searched, and could not find it.
However, HTC has their own snooping software that you can opt out of, I don't think it does key logging though.

Thanks for the info on T-Mo Sensation!

Worth a read http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2397128,00.asp
So is Carrier-IQ mainly a US thing, or do European handsets have this too? Another thing, if you buy a SIM free (non carrier linked phone), then presumably there shouldn't be any Carrier-IQ software on the phone, at least not from a network carrier.

If I have done my research correctly, all carriers use the IQ software on their devices. But I know for sure that the US carrier companies are the main ones that use IQ with thier devices. The reason you can not find it on HTC devices as mentioned in the articles, threads, blogs, and TrevE's website is because of of HTC Sense. Sense is so intergrated I.to the Andriod OS that even the settings are somewhat different than a pure Android device like the Nexus line of devices. But beleive me, IQ is there running in the background collecting information and sending it to the IQ website.
YAs for the question pissed in the OP, yes any true AOSP ROM like Cyanogen Mod ROMs, MIUI ROMs, or any ROM based off of them does not have any IQ in them, it is even not in the kernel as long as it is a true AOSP kernel.

Ok, so you are saying the Tmo USA Sensation does come with CarrierIQ? I just want to get a definitive answer on this! For what its worth, I am running a CM7 based ROM so I suspect I am ok, but its the others who are running a stock Sensation that I am concerned about.

UPDATE! Tmobile USA has just confirmed that they DO use CarrierIQ on their phones. The below link includes an internal screenshot that shows customer service how to respond to inquiries from customers about it. Interestingly, Tmobile also allows business accounts to remove CarrierIQ from their phones if they call in but consumer customers are out of luck.

Does anyone know if this is true with AT&T?

I work for Tmo. There are only about 9 devices that have ciq on T-Mobile. The Sensation is NOT one of them. Now if you have some kind of ROM ported from the Amaze, that's another story.

I'm sure it's Verizon behind this, and not HTC doing it by choice. It is in HTC's best interest to just follow Big Red's wishes, and it doesn't appear that they are locking things down in the same way that Motorola is these days. Aside from the "locked" bootloader and memory, what hidden security features are we running into?
Probably not HTC at all.. They are probably just filling a requirement. Its probably the carriers in reality and they need to create products that meet their customers requests.... Verizon, ATT etc and we are their customers. After all they want to make $20 for tethering etc. More they can lock down more they can charge..
So much for Android being "open" forever....
The bootloader hasn't been an issue since basically day 1.
I have a hard time believing there's mysterious secret features in the phone that give us a hard time modding it.
HTC could have gone the Motorola route and encrypted the bootloader, but they didn't.
I haven't had any issues with su.

Ive seen the tethering argument made before but I don't see how that would affect anything. Even devices with high security and a signed bootloader can be rooted to allow free tethering, a custom rom is not needed for this. Are there any devices that haven't been at least rooted?

The superuser issues stem from sqlite db handling, and were addressed before this device launched. The first rooting threads were just distributing older files.
Locking down of devices is likely more carrier influenced than manufacturer, as they have considerably more reasons to want customers locked out of their hardware.
The security mechanisms have been owned, at this point theres not much to worry about (for shipped devices anyways). They could always update the hw to a.newer more secure revision, but that would be quite costly and not likely to happen at all.

Roms that support at&t carrier billing?

Does anybody know the Roms that support carrier billing? I know a few do cause I used a Rom in the past that gave me carrier billing on my inspire but can't remember which one it was, but I do know it's not based on the inspire since HTC said it wasn't supported. Do all the desire hd Roms support carrier billing?

Like you bill the carrier for your data usage? I'm interested as well, lmk when you find one.
Gtg's sense rom had att carrier billing but I think he removed that option. Not sure.

What needs to be done specifically to make this work in any rom?
Out of curiousity, what do you use carrier billing for? I never found a need to worry about it in a ROM.

if I'm guessing correctly he/she is using carrier billing to purchase apps from play store i have the same issue and have been hunting many sites for a solution to this issue, i have always used ota root keeper and hide root, so that att doesn't disable this feature, I've tried rolling back to different versions of google play and still no luck I'm a bit of a noob, (getting close to amateur status) is it possible for someone with more experience to maybe write a kernel or something to reactivate this feature, i know some roms have this fearure already working so if someone with more experience could offer some input it would be greatly appreciated.,
Device: Inspire 4G
Rom Version: aospX- 1.0 1-DHD w/ inspiremod .5 thatks for your input hopefully a person much smarter than me can look into this issue
It's still an option in google play. I'm on a rooted Rom and still have the choice. It is not available for everything though. For example on music I notice there is no carrier billing but for apps like world of goo its an option. I don't know if it's certain publishers or just certain categories. But it's still there.

If the boot loader gets locked its not impossible to flash custom roms. I'm sure the DEVs here can find a work around. I came from a Sony X10 and the boot loader is locked on that device. The DEV's in the X10 forum were able to get a working CWM to flash different rom's, themes, etc. It would be challenging, but very doable..

Well the public key encryption used for signing can be theoretically broken but it takes centuries of brute force. More likely, someone will find a way to bypass the signature checking in the hardware somehow. You only have to flip one bit to make a "if x ..." turn into a "if not x ...", you just have to find the right place and a way to flip it.
It definitely puts a downer on devs willing to work with the phone...
Definitely something they should leave alone. Although HTC clearly knows how to make great mobile devices (in contrast to Samsung, for instance; Sense is light years better than that RFS Touchwiz crap) it's not smart to try to shackle the Android dev community. They will loose market share if they lock the bootloaders.

When I saw this on android central it seemed to imply to opposite. In response to outcries over the locked bootloaders on the EVO 3D they were considering unlocked them.
http://www.androidcentral.com/htc-were-reviewing-our-bootloader-policy
HTC's statement:
"Thanks so much for providing feedback, we hear your concerns. Your satisfaction is a top priority for us and we're working hard to ensure you have great experiences with our phones. We're reviewing the issue and our policy around bootloaders and will provide more information soon. Thank you for your interest, support and willingness to share your feedback."
I figure if from now on if all phones are locked down...I'll just stick with what I have so I can keep modding them.
So far the Inspire has been a great phone and my Streak is definately in great shape.
Soon as DJ Steve ports over Honeycomb for the Streak 5...it'll be as good as any out there on the market. Maybe not as fast, but will do the job.
that's what i was thinkin i might just get off the train at the inspire and be done with it
Lol at the third comment. "What are boot loaders!" Lol
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
There must be pressure from the 3rd party software contributors to ensure their product is forced on and STAYS on the phone.. I can see no reason else for the locked bootloader.. HTC's are extremely difficult to perm-brick, and with RUU's available they are easily fixable.. If they where open about it, put some damned documentation with it and a failsafe return method, they wouldnt have to worry about warranty issues, and even if it did it MUST be a more expensive proposition to create or license a method of locking the bootloader that wont be defeated in 10 minutes.. not to mention the hit they would take on revenue even if it is only around 2-5%...
I guess its all about the advertising dollars and who pays who..
sickening really..
Hail the AOSP builds...
Cell providers don't want me/you deleting their apps or enabling features on your/my device without paying...tethering for example. It's a numbers game and to them its just business.
They care less about battery life, they want you to buy aftermarket batts from them. they want you/me to pay for every kb/mb/gb we use.
That's the bottom line.
Aside from all that...they don't want it getting out just how crappy their product is. Unless your Motorola.
???
Not sure what this post is suppose to prove. The statement by HTC only states they are looking into the situation concerning the bootloader policy, but doesn't specify what their intentions are. A generic statement at best. For all we know, this could be just another Fakebook post. Until I hear or see an official statement, I'm taking this with a grain of salt.
BTW, I've seen no posts on my Facebook by HTC about this...just sayin...
if they start locking down the bootloaders i WILL go to samsung, as much as i love htc

Hey guys, Im new here but look forward to learning from this great community. That being said, I also questioned the leaglity of switching a phones netwrok. From what I understand, it should be legal according to the new exemptions to section 1201 of the Digital Millennium copyright act:
The new exemptions allow circumvention of (A) locks on cellular phone software, known in the industry as “bootloader” programs, that prevent customers from switching carriers without obtaining new handsets;
quoted from (wont let me link to web page due to new user, but you can google it) This is a new change, just going into effect in November.
That being said, I had a Nexus flashed to boost and it works fine. The only problem that I have is that they will not port my old number over due to it being an 'unsupported device'. Now I need to figure out if I root it, will it cause issues with the flash?
Can somebody PM me what was meant by "same as the evo without the meid change" please?

The process is not the same as the evo, its the same as any other Samsung phone. Just google Epic on Boost and you'll find instructions.
As far as rooting the device, it wont affect the radio portion of the phone which is what is used to make calls use 3g data. The only thing that will be lost is the MMSC URL setting in the data menu only if you flash a new ROM. That setting controls pic and mms messaging. It will usually default back to "http://mms.mysprintpcs.com". Just edit it so it reads "mm.myboostmobile.com". The data menu is accessed in the dialer by ##3282#, you'll need the SPC to make any changes.

USA ICS release - T-Mobile/HTC update

Full article from Android and Me
HTC has delivered a ROM to us however it is still having issues the reason that other sensation types have the update without issue and ours did not come out that way is because every ROM must be adapted to the hardware of the device because we use a different radio than other providers and also have applications such as wifi calling it also has to be compatible with those. What the HTC rep told you is most likely correct because once a ROM is delivered we have 2 weeks to test it and then approve it or send it back they then have 4 weeks to fix the bugs and return it back to us, where we are exactly in that process I do not know but that is how a ROM is delivered to the customer.
The original ROM was not delivered to us in November, we started testing it just recently but I think it has been longer than 2 weeks so at this point HTC most likely has the ball.
You bought a phone and it has been announced that you are getting ICS you have every right to know what’s going on with it and when you can see these awesome features. I did go into a lot of detail about how a ROM gets to the end user (you guys) but that wasn’t to point fingers only so you would have a better understanding of why you don’t have it yet, the bottom line is the Sensation has T-Mobile’s and HTC’s name all over it and both companies want to make you proud to be a Sensation owner so we are working as fast as we can to deliver it but also want to make sure that it stands up to your expectations.

It seems that HTC can't get the Wifi calling to work within spec. It didn't work the first time and TMO told HTC that they needed to work on it some more. It's going back and forth between TMO and HTC.
And no offense to our devs here, but lets be realistic. Our roms here aren't without their issues. Ie. wifi calling still crashing, mms not working, proximity sensor issues, wifi issues, bt issues, etc. but the positive is that the roms here get better than their respective base.

I don't think it's fair that the devs don't have access to the same resources that tmo and htc have either. If they did we would probably also have perfect 'native' ports of Samsung's, Sony's, and Moto's UIs, lol. it is what it is. the devs have improved on what's been released (although, I would like to see a rom that emphasizes stability instead of tweaks - Maybe I'll take a crack at it if I can find enough time, we'll see).
As far as free help is concerned... I don't know how much work they actually take off XDA (although, i'm sure it's happened, i feel like it's little). The X10 (in which I had a little previous experience) had a number of things fixed that's never (and never will be) fixed in any official rom.
but the original point was to contradict this statement: "our custom ROM chefs don't seem to have a problem" and "So T-Mobile can't get their WiFi Calling and ...". There are issues and it's not just TMO but HTC can't fix wifi calling in a timely manner. Just trying to dispel inaccuracies (IMHO).
I would rather have a clean ROM straight from HTC without T-Mobile adding junk to it anyway, including WiFi calling...
Well what it is that tmobl locked the phone up so it can't use att making HTC redo there **** its out everywhere but here in us
Looks like a corp had a hand trying to block the progress of something with hardware changes and bloatware I would love a Rom from HRC or google with out tmob trash but I am not on tmob now so I have no bloat lol

And no offense to our devs here, but lets be realistic. Our roms here aren't without their issues. Ie. wifi calling still crashing, mms not working, proximity sensor issues, wifi issues, bt issues, etc. but the positive is that the roms here get better than their respective base.

Speak for yourself, my friend.
I'm using bluetooth, video recording, wifi, wifi calling, all cell radio features, proximity working find, light sensor as well.
I don't mms. I gmail.
So. The devs and chefs are doing a FANTASTIC job, especially with these kernels.
Just like i tell everyone in every single rom forum for the sensation. T-Mobile's Wifi calling is just useless bloatware that is a program easy as hell for, supposed amazing techs of their caliber to make and now we have to wait for official Ics due to an app that don't work stock or rooted. Everytime i use wifi calling, and yes on stock, all i get is" HUH,WHAT DID YOU SAY, I CANT HEAR YOU",. And thats why it also rarely works in roms. It's not HTC's fault T-Mobile has a shi%$ program that is useless out the box. Wouldn't be useless if it ever worked. And now we have to wait for Ics because of it.

Yep, this would be the best scenario!

Ditto. I've been on ARHD for three weeks and I have not looked back. I haven't found anything that doesn't work.

Wifi calling is a great feature. I never have problems with voice quality. Maybe your interner sucks.

I agree Wifi calling is not perfet but for me it is a must. I use it when I'm overseas and in basements where I can't get reception. My friends who have iphones are jealous because they have to go to the first floor to get reception and make calls.
We are not getting the official update until tmobile makes sales on the one-s ..it will probably be in May when we see the update..good thing I have a nexus with 4.0.4..**

^ Likewise I depend on wifi calling. I'll pass on the other bloatware, but this isn't an optional app for me. I'm afraid that I've had no consistent luck with the ROMs available here.
I suspect that will change once T-Mobile has released their ICS update with a working configuration and (possibly) an updated app. In the meantime, I am content to wait.
It's based on my opinion.**

WiFi calling is not bloatware to people who use it. I use it everyday at home. There's no way I can make or receive call without it. I also use it every time I'm overseas. For me, WiFi calling is a must. That's why I don't dare play around different roms for fear of messing up the WiFi calling feature. I can also wait for the official update with a working WiFi calling.
