I'm sure it's Verizon behind this, and not HTC doing it by choice. It is in HTC's best interest to just follow Big Red's wishes, and it doesn't appear that they are locking things down in the same way that Motorola is these days. Aside from the "locked" bootloader and memory, what hidden security features are we running into?
Probably not HTC at all.. They are probably just filling a requirement. Its probably the carriers in reality and they need to create products that meet their customers requests.... Verizon, ATT etc and we are their customers. After all they want to make $20 for tethering etc. More they can lock down more they can charge..
So much for Android being "open" forever....
The bootloader hasn't been an issue since basically day 1.
I have a hard time believing there's mysterious secret features in the phone that give us a hard time modding it.
HTC could have gone the Motorola route and encrypted the bootloader, but they didn't.
I haven't had any issues with su.

Ive seen the tethering argument made before but I don't see how that would affect anything. Even devices with high security and a signed bootloader can be rooted to allow free tethering, a custom rom is not needed for this. Are there any devices that haven't been at least rooted?

The superuser issues stem from sqlite db handling, and were addressed before this device launched. The first rooting threads were just distributing older files.
Locking down of devices is likely more carrier influenced than manufacturer, as they have considerably more reasons to want customers locked out of their hardware.
The security mechanisms have been owned, at this point theres not much to worry about (for shipped devices anyways). They could always update the hw to a.newer more secure revision, but that would be quite costly and not likely to happen at all.

If the boot loader gets locked its not impossible to flash custom roms. I'm sure the DEVs here can find a work around. I came from a Sony X10 and the boot loader is locked on that device. The DEV's in the X10 forum were able to get a working CWM to flash different rom's, themes, etc. It would be challenging, but very doable..

Well the public key encryption used for signing can be theoretically broken but it takes centuries of brute force. More likely, someone will find a way to bypass the signature checking in the hardware somehow. You only have to flip one bit to make a "if x ..." turn into a "if not x ...", you just have to find the right place and a way to flip it.
It definitely puts a downer on devs willing to work with the phone...
Definitely something they should leave alone. Although HTC clearly knows how to make great mobile devices (in contrast to Samsung, for instance; Sense is light years better than that RFS Touchwiz crap) it's not smart to try to shackle the Android dev community. They will loose market share if they lock the bootloaders.

When I saw this on android central it seemed to imply to opposite. In response to outcries over the locked bootloaders on the EVO 3D they were considering unlocked them.
http://www.androidcentral.com/htc-were-reviewing-our-bootloader-policy
HTC's statement:
"Thanks so much for providing feedback, we hear your concerns. Your satisfaction is a top priority for us and we're working hard to ensure you have great experiences with our phones. We're reviewing the issue and our policy around bootloaders and will provide more information soon. Thank you for your interest, support and willingness to share your feedback."
I figure if from now on if all phones are locked down...I'll just stick with what I have so I can keep modding them.
So far the Inspire has been a great phone and my Streak is definately in great shape.
Soon as DJ Steve ports over Honeycomb for the Streak 5...it'll be as good as any out there on the market. Maybe not as fast, but will do the job.
that's what i was thinkin i might just get off the train at the inspire and be done with it

There must be pressure from the 3rd party software contributors to ensure their product is forced on and STAYS on the phone.. I can see no reason else for the locked bootloader.. HTC's are extremely difficult to perm-brick, and with RUU's available they are easily fixable.. If they where open about it, put some damned documentation with it and a failsafe return method, they wouldnt have to worry about warranty issues, and even if it did it MUST be a more expensive proposition to create or license a method of locking the bootloader that wont be defeated in 10 minutes.. not to mention the hit they would take on revenue even if it is only around 2-5%...
I guess its all about the advertising dollars and who pays who..
sickening really..
Hail the AOSP builds...
Cell providers don't want me/you deleting their apps or enabling features on your/my device without paying...tethering for example. It's a numbers game and to them its just business.
They care less about battery life, they want you to buy aftermarket batts from them. they want you/me to pay for every kb/mb/gb we use.
That's the bottom line.
Aside from all that...they don't want it getting out just how crappy their product is. Unless your Motorola.
???
Not sure what this post is suppose to prove. The statement by HTC only states they are looking into the situation concerning the bootloader policy, but doesn't specify what their intentions are. A generic statement at best. For all we know, this could be just another Fakebook post. Until I hear or see an official statement, I'm taking this with a grain of salt.
BTW, I've seen no posts on my Facebook by HTC about this...just sayin...

They'll unlock the bootloader to the evo 3d and sensation but not the tbolt. Their unlocking tool will require you to provide them with your device information to void your warranty. Only good I see is developers might be able to use the tool to unlock other devices like the tbolt and future devices without having to provide htc with any of your phones information.

On top of that from what I have been reading it is somewhat limiting when compared to s-off. No hboot, radio, or splash1 flashing. Last I heard kernels had to be fastbooted on. Often times in the world of media, the first to the story gets to claim they were first. They get the worm, and they get the page views. And we won’t say that page views aren’t great; they are. They end up helping to pay the bills that mount when you grow. The obvious downside to that, is often times that same media outlet can fall victim to their own success, and in turn report on things that aren’t actually real. We’ve done it before, and we’ve had to step up and admit it.
At XDA, we take pride in the fact that most of the mobile development news originates here. We are the source that all others report on. We also take pride in the fact that while we may not be the first to the news, we endeavor to report the real story after it’s been tried, tested, and verified. After all, we are the source.
Recently, news went around the internet that the new darling of the mobile world, the Samsung Galaxy S 4, had been rooted prior to its release. Generally that is great news, but in this case the person who did the “rooting” didn’t have the device to test the process. In many cases, like previous versions of the Galaxy series, that is OK because the way to root Samsung devices has been the same via repacking Samsung’s firmware package with su and then flashing via ODIN. While that old way worked, it doesn’t work on the new S4 as XDA Recognized Developer Odia proved in a thread similar to the original “root” thread.
What is different about the S 4 is that Samsung utilizes a new security feature to enable BYOD to make the S 4 more palatable for the Enterprise customers, and that feature is Samsung Knox. Without going into a lot of detail, Knox effectively isolates your personal side of the device from your companies private side.
XDA Elite Recognized Developer Chainfire began toying with the Qualcomm version of the Galaxy S 4 (GT-I9505) back in early March, and immediately began to have issues with the “tried and true” process for rooting previous Galaxy devices. He noticed that while you could “inject” the su binary into the firmware, the device would immediately reboot when that same binary was executed.
After much testing, Chainfire figured out a way to root the device using his tried-and-true CF-Auto-Root process and posted the method in this thread. Be warned that this currently only works on the GT-I9505 (Qualcomm LTE) version of the S4, with Odia finding that there are issues with the Exynos 5 Octa version. As is always the case, be warned that there is a risk in performing any procedure such as this on your device. Let’s hope that Samsung hasn’t decided to really turn their noses up at the development community.

Talked to a friend who sat through a Samsung presentation today about their new devices and the Knox technology. It sounds like they're trying to have an extremely secure device configuration possible - one which might not be rootable and if it was rootable, it'd be fixed pretty quickly.
But from, http://www.samsung.com/global/business/mobile/solution/security/samsung-knox:
In addition, Samsung Knox's Secure Boot technology allows the switch of the secure boot root certificate in a secure manner after the devices are shipped. As a result, customers that have high security requirements can purchase regular consumer devices and switch the root-of-trust used for secure boot to better protected ones.

It sounds like they don't intend to ship all the devices locked down. Hopefully the carriers don't get any genius ideas about this...
From what I read of this thread and others rooting the S4, what has been rooted is a non-Knox'd device. They seem to be switching that stuff on and off during the pre-release tweaking.
Most custom rom flashers seem to last 6 mobths on a particular phone. The first bunch defected to the the Note 2 and the last bunch to the Galaxy S4.
Now i feel like i a droid charge owner after the galaxy nexus release.

What is the purpose of this thread? Nobody, not a dev nor any "regular" user, owes anything in the form of continued updates for customized software. Technology advances and phones improve very quickly. It's been a year since release and most roms have already improved upon what Samsung put out. AOSP takes the reins about a year after a phones release since that's the time when the OEM stops pushing OTAs. AOSP sees continued updates whereas OEM firmware sees fewer updates.
So I ask, what feature or function are you unable or wanting to use that our phone hardware can support?

not too mention it's getting locked down hard..
That is the primary reason why people are still buying the S3.
Yes. Go buy an s4 asap. Development is currently sky rocketing...
Like others have said, this is an unnecessary thread. A bunch of AOSP roms have active nightlies and several TW roms are also being updated. The problem with TW roms are that once you get everything put into them, there's not much more you can do. The code is based off Samsung source so everything is already there. the only thing there is to do is rebase when a new ota comes out.
Go try out an AOSP rom. They really run well on the s3.
Lol AOSP is still booming on the HTC incredible 2. I think that we'll see stuff for much longer since the inc2 with as old and outdated as it is, its still rocking over there.

All I have to say is we need to stick together. I think the biggest reason development slows is when the community stops responding to the forums. The people are there but get bored and no longer respond to the development provided even though they take advantage of the development. When the community stops responding the development slows down because developers no longer feel the demand. So if your out there respond and keep things flowing! I posted a thread with a script for CM10 on friday. 200 people looked at it without so much as a "this script sucks" or one "thanks". Maybe nobody cares about that thread I don't know, but when you post and nobody responds you kind of feel like why bother. IMO it's the communities responsibility to keep development going. Not the developers! So if you have something on you mind post it. Let's keep things moving and stick together!

THIS . very well said sir. :good:
The HTC One may slow down development when it comes, I for one will be getting that phone. I will still be keeping my SG3 tho. (will be the first phone I actually keep rather than sell to buy new phone, I really love this phone)
It was the Galaxy S III community - and its massive, relevant history + recent topics here - which gave me enough how-tos, tools + what-if ideas that led to my:
1. Bringing a relative's phone back from a watery death
2. Rooting + installing a custom recovery on the resurrected, stock and locked phone - despite it no longer accepting touch screen input (i.e., hardware short was evident on the display connector across at least two pins)
3. Pulling 1.5 years of photos and videos + app settings from the partially crippled phone, making its owner rather ecstatic
It was an AT&T GSIII, but it information - much of it active threads - gleaned across the XDA Galaxy S III provider topics helped me finally do the above.
Heck, when I gave away my HTC Droid Incredible not long ago, even that model still had active ROM development happening.

I wouldn't be surprised if most the devs sell their s4s due to the fact root is now broken and the boot loader is unable to be unlocked.

Don't be so quick on that. The HTC Rezound bootloader was locked down pretty good and there was a way around that albeit it involved an insulated wire trick along with software. I wouldn't put anything past these guys just yet.

Ah yes but they did kill the droid x. I can assume we may see an update that will do the same. So watch out.

Yessir that would be me who did the testing for the Rezound for S-OFF with the Unlimited.IO crew
As the saying goes, "the squeaky wheel gets the grease," right? I believe if enough of us email Big Sammy about our discrepancy with these locked bootloaders, perhaps we will get some sort of reply? Even if the answer is a no, wouldn't that be better than false hope? I posted the email address in another board yesterday and felt it needed it's own thread. So here goes: [email protected]
I called Samsung four times yesterday, and on the fourth try, successfully got escalated to a level two technical support agent. He, and the other agents I had the pleasure of speaking to, had no information about future updates, bootloaders, or anything pertaining to root. BUT he did say I could email my complaint to Samsungs President. He stated that as a user who typically gains root on his devices, he understood where I was coming from. I asked what phones he has and he replied (paraphrased) "a galaxy S5 international, rooted and an ASUS device, also rooted,". I think Samsung needs to know that they've killed all potential development on a spectacular device and, in turn, have lost loyal customers because of it.

Samsung gained too much market share and isn't trying to applease the minority. They did this with the s6 sd card slot removal and sales drop but didn't learned their lesson. Money talks, do but the next samsung device and let them know why.

I going to get rid of the phone this week and get the HTC10. Not just because of no root.
1.Phone is to small for my hands.
2. I find the buttons on the bottom of the phone are more troublesome than helpful.
3. The pulldown is always opening Google voice When you swipe down
4.phone is always turning on movies or music in my pocket.
With all that said,I did write the letter

I can't say I blame you. I've noticed that a majority of known developers are leaving for the HTC. I may follow suit once my term is up on my S7. So sad to see such a great device collapse into itself like this. Despite its shortcomings, I really enjoy my S7. However, bloatware, the inability to speed up the device and manage other root privileges is seriously ruining my experience.

Question. isn't Android 6.0 to blame for a lot of the new security features ? aren't the locked bootloaders , to secure all the " PAY " features in these new phones ?
just a newbie question ps I hate my HTC M9 and it is also locked on boot lader has S-ON too
I emailed the " sunshine" crew about removing the S=ON so far no one has contacted me, and I gave the same email I use in here.
since I WILL NEVER put my credit card info into the phone , I could care less if after rooting a phone I get some sort of virus that might steal my contacts , who cares .
sure would like to know what you will develop on HTC 6.0 that you can't on a S7 running 6.0 or 6.0.1 Android OS?
thanks for putting up . old **** here

You go to the HTC site to unlock your bootloader (free).
You use PayPal to pay for sunshine unlock, they don't get your credit card number. Sunshine crew is very reputable, they gave me S-off on my M9
Well if everyone has given up on the Qualcomm version of the S7, then there is no need for this thread. I've seen quite a bit of activity in the Exynos variant threads. Has anyone checked to see if tmobile can be run on it? I'd fork out the cash for one if it were a smart move.

thanks will try your suggestion next. finally got this M9 rooted, all my failures were due to the bootloader that I unlocked, somehow , got locked up again , only thing I can think of is the RESET's I did from settings ?
anyway I re-unlocked it again , and this time TWRP finally installed. now I need to re read posts telling me what S=OFF would do for me.
thanks again
S-off means literally security off which means your bootloader is unlocked.

F Samsung, last one. I'm butt hurt, to the level of stiches.
sent from my bootloader locked $700 SM-G930T.
I emailed for you. I don't expect any sort of reply. I already ordered the HTC 10 and have all the tools ready to unlock it and flash away.
If an exploit is found, I would come back to Samsung in a heartbeat, though!

Well I think an exploit has been found, but Samsung is lurking in xda. They said it safe for all, they're just waiting to do a tutorial for it and avoid samsung from patching. The newest update seem to have patched this certain exploit so don't update.

I quickly threw his post but keep in mind he is working with the sprint variant.
Once they can confirm it's safe.

I just gave that phone back. Can't see the screen with sunglasses on unless it's sideways. The flow of everything didn't make any sense to me and I didn't find the camera halfway special. Just my opinion andexperience. I had the phone 2 days before giving it back.
