USA ICS release - T-Mobile/HTC update - HTC Sensation

Full article from Android and Me
HTC has delivered a ROM to us however it is still having issues the reason that other sensation types have the update without issue and ours did not come out that way is because every ROM must be adapted to the hardware of the device because we use a different radio than other providers and also have applications such as wifi calling it also has to be compatible with those. What the HTC rep told you is most likely correct because once a ROM is delivered we have 2 weeks to test it and then approve it or send it back they then have 4 weeks to fix the bugs and return it back to us, where we are exactly in that process I do not know but that is how a ROM is delivered to the customer.
The original ROM was not delivered to us in November, we started testing it just recently but I think it has been longer than 2 weeks so at this point HTC most likely has the ball.
You bought a phone and it has been announced that you are getting ICS you have every right to know what’s going on with it and when you can see these awesome features. I did go into a lot of detail about how a ROM gets to the end user (you guys) but that wasn’t to point fingers only so you would have a better understanding of why you don’t have it yet, the bottom line is the Sensation has T-Mobile’s and HTC’s name all over it and both companies want to make you proud to be a Sensation owner so we are working as fast as we can to deliver it but also want to make sure that it stands up to your expectations.

A fairly meaty update that helps explain the process, the holdup and a possible time frame for when we might see the release.

So T-Mobile can't get their WiFi Calling and other bloatware to work, but our custom ROM chefs don't seem to have a problem?
Thank God for our chefs!!!

It seems that HTC can't get the Wifi calling to work within spec. It didn't work the first time and TMO told HTC that they needed to work on it some more. It's going back and forth between TMO and HTC.
And no offense to our devs here, but lets be realistic. Our roms here aren't without their issues. Ie. wifi calling still crashing, mms not working, proximity sensor issues, wifi issues, bt issues, etc. but the positive is that the roms here get better than their respective base.

Now I don't think that's fair our devs don't have the resources tmob has and we are ahead of them with 4.0 almost working and got 60 3.6 roms out there if one dev had what HTC had or tmobl we be in next stage ics 4.0 is far from last Rom this phone will do
I do think HTC watches this as do all phones and leak so they have free help

I don't think it's fair that the devs don't have access to the same resources that tmo and htc have either. If they did we would probably also have perfect 'native' ports of Samsung's, Sony's, and Moto's UIs, lol. it is what it is. the devs have improved on what's been released (although, I would like to see a rom that emphasizes stability instead of tweaks - Maybe I'll take a crack at it if I can find enough time, we'll see).
As far as free help is concerned... I don't know how much work they actually take off XDA (although, i'm sure it's happened, i feel like it's little). The X10 (in which I had a little previous experience) had a number of things fixed that's never (and never will be) fixed in any official rom.
but the original point was to contradict this statement: "our custom ROM chefs don't seem to have a problem" and "So T-Mobile can't get their WiFi Calling and ...". There are issues and it's not just TMO but HTC can't fix wifi calling in a timely manner. Just trying to dispel inaccuracies (IMHO).

I would rather have a clean ROM straight from HTC without T-Mobile adding junk to it anyway, including WiFi calling...

Well what it is that tmobl locked the phone up so it can't use att making HTC redo there **** its out everywhere but here in us
Looks like a corp had a hand trying to block the progress of something with hardware changes and bloatware I would love a Rom from HRC or google with out tmob trash but I am not on tmob now so I have no bloat lol

Speak for yourself, my friend.
I'm using bluetooth, video recording, wifi, wifi calling, all cell radio features, proximity working find, light sensor as well.
I don't mms. I gmail.
So. The devs and chefs are doing a FANTASTIC job, especially with these kernels.

Just like i tell everyone in every single rom forum for the sensation. T-Mobile's Wifi calling is just useless bloatware that is a program easy as hell for, supposed amazing techs of their caliber to make and now we have to wait for official Ics due to an app that don't work stock or rooted. Everytime i use wifi calling, and yes on stock, all i get is" HUH,WHAT DID YOU SAY, I CANT HEAR YOU",. And thats why it also rarely works in roms. It's not HTC's fault T-Mobile has a shi%$ program that is useless out the box. Wouldn't be useless if it ever worked. And now we have to wait for Ics because of it.

I agree Wifi calling is not perfet but for me it is a must. I use it when I'm overseas and in basements where I can't get reception. My friends who have iphones are jealous because they have to go to the first floor to get reception and make calls.

We are not getting the official update until tmobile makes sales on the one-s ..it will probably be in May when we see the update..good thing I have a nexus with 4.0.4..**

^ Likewise I depend on wifi calling. I'll pass on the other bloatware, but this isn't an optional app for me. I'm afraid that I've had no consistent luck with the ROMs available here.
I suspect that will change once T-Mobile has released their ICS update with a working configuration and (possibly) an updated app. In the meantime, I am content to wait.

It's based on my opinion.**

WiFi calling is not bloatware to people who use it. I use it everyday at home. There's no way I can make or receive call without it. I also use it every time I'm overseas. For me, WiFi calling is a must. That's why I don't dare play around different roms for fear of messing up the WiFi calling feature. I can also wait for the official update with a working WiFi calling.

Did 2.3.5 cripple your tether?

I posted this in two other threads but both got ignored.
As soon as I updated to the 2.3.5, tethering seems to be no longer supported. The option is there, but as soon as I activate the tether, 3G goes away. I have to turn off the tether, then manually switch mobile data off and on just for my 3G to come back.
Is this their way of getting people to finally pay for it?
Yes.. one of the features of the update was removing tether if you were not paying for it. No biggie though... you have a Nexus.. just unlock it and download one of the apps off the market.

Since my phone had none of the reception issues this update was supposed to fix & reading alot of posts saying that it really didn't do much for those issues, I think I'll skip the update prompts & keep my free tethering.

I am a little confused why Google allowed sprint to do this. Whether you you use the tether or not and regardless of how easy it is to get it back it doesn't sit well with me that Sprint is calling the shots with this phone now. One of the major appeals of this phone is the pure Google experience, which is now the partial Google experience. I wonder if this had anything to do with the delay of the OTA, maybe sprint was holding out until google let them kill the tether? Anyways, it doesn't instill a great amount of confidence in google for this phone and future nexus devices. I still like the phone and there is nothing on sprint I would rather have, I'm just a little pissed at how they tucked this into an update that was much anticipated and stripped some of our "pure googleness".
I don't understand this...i dont pay anything extra for tether, and i can still tether on stock 2.3.5. Why are some people unable?
i just flashed the new KE5 radio(found in the ns4g dev section), and im not seeing any issues. still on 2.3.4 tho.. i dont see any reasons to update to 2.3.5 especially if this is a problem. i tether wayyyy too much.

So I have a two day new Nexus S and I did the manual update last night. Now when activating the mobile hotspot the 3g or 4g icons go away and it does not have connectivity anymore.
Now, I have read conflicting info about whether this is happening just to those who did the manual update and if you did OTA it still works. Can anyone confirm this?
If that is the case, then I need to return this one and get another and just be more patient next time to get the update officially OTA. =)
Not that I am tremendously worried about the tethering/hotspot being free, but I am uneasy that doing this manually may have screwed things up in as of yet other unknown ways. Like if I do pay for hotspot/tethering someday it might still not work right, etc.
Thanks!

Did you manually update or did you wait for it to be pushed to your phone? I'm stock and wasn't rooted and I manually updated and my tethering both usb and wifi hotspots are not working.
Also I notice in the kernel version that it's longer than when I was on 2.3.4 mine says 2.6.35.7-g3cc95e3 [email protected] #1
Is that normal?

G2x Possibilites

I'm interested in getting a G2x... Looks like good hardware for a good price right now, but I had a few questions to see if it will fit my needs.
-I'm going to be using it wifi-only. I'm planning on installing CSipSimple to use as a VOIP phone. Anyone have experience doing this? On my Samsung moment CSipSimple has terrible issues routing audio and microphone.
-I would like to hook up my wiimote and plug the phone into my TV with HDMI for emulators... Has anyone had experience with doing this? Theoretically it looks like it should work flawless.
-I may in the future want to hook it up to voice/data. But on the cheap through a prepaid carrier like straight talk. You can get sims from straight talk, but will I have to unlock the phone? Is it even possible for this to work? Has anyone here done it before?
-Wifi only, what's the battery life like? Is a full day with moderate usage (screen-on 3 hours sporadic usage, wifi always on for voip calls) possible? Without cell connections I'd think it would last longer than normal.
-Any other issues with the phone that annoy people that might turn me off to the device?
Thanks!
i just ordered one of these, waiting for it to arrive at this very moment
i saw on the LG site a TON of bad reviews on this thing, a lot of them recent. things like the phone rebooting during a call, running hot, locking up to the point you have to remove the battery, bad battery life, and a few others.
but there were just as many good reviews too, best phone ever, no issues at all, etc. and some of those from people saying they have had their phone for over a few months, so i'm hoping mine will be fine
and i too am looking at what i can do with this device. i hope i will not be dissapointed
You came to the right place, the developers here have done a great job making this phone as stable as possible. They are, of course, limited by the LG code that they are working with, but the custom ROMs correct many issues. Of course, if you get a bad phone/bad hardware, not much can be done, but that's a risk with any phone.

Just flash custom ROMs, the hardware on this phone is amazing for such a cheap price, but LG can't code software for crap.
The stock ROM is guaranteed to give you rebooting, overheating, lock ups, bad battery life, etc...
But CM7 based ROMs (NOT CM9 BASED, CM9 IS NOT FINISHED) are all pretty rock solid stable. And even some of the 2.3.3 builds are good, Bionix Reloaded is the only 2.3.3 one that has been recently updated, but man Bionix is smooth as butter.
Have fun with your new powerhouse of a phone.

I can speak specifically to this one cuz I found out the hard way. You'll need to install a CyanogenMod7 based rom for this to work. Unless something has changed, the stock based ROMs don't have the necessary blue tooth profiles to connect a wiimote, sixaxis, etc. I was running Weapon G2x and my wiimote would not connect...so I switched to CM7 and it works.
With that said i love my phone and have little to no issues since I began running custom roms.

it's an app interface to http://www.google.com/voice
Google Voice is a (free!!) virtual phone service allowing you to make and receive calls/SMS for free from a web browser and forward these calls/SMS to any other phones you own.
GrooveIP is a VOIP app that connects to google voice via your cell phone's wifi connection, so you don't need to rely on a cell voice connection.
The Google Voice android app does the same thing for SMS.

Just entered internal testing phase at TMO. Won't come this month. HTC said they would release it by end of this month and THEY did! They released it to TMOBILE. It is now up to TMobile to verify, test, and push out, and I'm sorry to say they have promised nothing in the way of time frames. IF all goe well with internal testing, look for the release in the second half of April to first half of May.

What you have to remember is, when HTC promises a timeframe, that does notnjnclude the timeframe it takes the US carrier to release and update (phones that have the same model, but sold both internationally and in the US).
So as to when T-Mobile will push an ics update, well it's really impossible to tell.

T-Mobile ICS upgrade
My suspicion is it's going to be a long time, if ever, before we see an official T-Mobile USA ICS upgrade for our Sensations.
Reasons being:
An ICS OTA upgrade will result in a huge bump in calls to T-Mobiles support lines. Having worked in a call center the last thing they want is more calls as more calls mean more $$ going out the door.
An ICS upgrade for the Sensation might undercut sales of the upcoming HTC One, which T-Mobile definitely doesn't want to do.
It would not surprise if the upgrade doesn't come before the fall or even if they blow it off completely. Just my opinion.

Yeah, what you said is not gonna happen. T-mobile upgrades phones all the time. They upgraded the mytouch from froyo to gingerbread, so why would they not upgrade the sensation from gingerbread to ics. They will get more calls to cs for not upgrading it than If they upgrade and have problems. But it will take a little longer, because they gotta get their bloatware working with it.

I think he was just referring to the other guy above, no quote just a bit confusing!
You people are so positive! I think that they are simply working to make their bloatware compatible with ics. The first thing I would do is delete that junk.
The tricky thing might be getting Wifi calling to work on ICS. I know some of the Rom developers were having trouble getting this working.
HTC Confirmed that the "Sensation 4G", which is T-mobile's branded version will get ICS, so I certainly think it is coming.
I am just worried their marketing team will push it off till after HTC One and Galaxy SIII launch so they get a bunch of people upgrading/renewing for pre-installed ICS phones...

Yep, my Sensation just updated to the newest Play store - v.3.5.15 along with a slew of apps that needed to be updated - some good, some bloated; among them Flash player 11 and slacker radio. So maybe these updated apps push may have something to do with ICS incompatibility.
Regardless, T-MO will eventually send out an ICS update. I'm hoping next week, but realistically, sometime in April. May would be a complete joke.
No ICS anytime soon...
Today T-Mobile started replying on Facebook to inquiries regarding ICS on the Sensation with variations of the following "T-Mobile USA Oh you're sporting the sensation, nice! right now we have done some tests with what HTC has provided us for ICS on the Sensation and the results were not exactly what we needed so HTC is currently working on fixing the bugs so we can roll that out. ^KM" In short they are saying they've run into problems and sent it back to HTC for review. Don't see this coming out anytime before the second half of the year.

[Q] No Voice Dialer with ICS

So the first thing I noticed is that for some reason, there is no more Voice Dialer after the ICS OTA. Bummer since I use this all the time in my car.
I called HTC and they told me that they are looking to fix this but in their original ICS, that feature was still there. That leads me to believe that the carrier (thanks T-Mobile!), for some reason, got rid of it. Maybe it was one of the issues that kept them from pushing out the OTA.
At any rate, HTC said they are working on it (I guess with the carrier) to issue a fix for it. For the time being, they suggest Vlingo.
Anyone have any other suggestions?
This was a huge fail in my mind on the update.
So I started trying out all of the various ROMs... and come to find out, the ones that have bluetooth voice dialing dont have support for WiFi Calling... those that support WiFi Calling dont even allow a Bluetooth headset to connect...
Makes me believe that there is more than meets the eye on ICS and WiFi Calling...

Already confirmed with HTC that it was taken away with the T-Mo OTA push. It's a known issue. Not sure if it's happening only on SOME devices though and you just got lucky...
Are you on TMo?

Yes, I'm on T-Mobile. People are also reporting not having face unlock, but I have that also, and it is working.

I don't have any of those problems. Bluetooth and voice dialing work just fine on mine and I use wifi calling 98% of the time.
make sure you guys get compensated from HTC or Tmobile, when you get a driving violation for physically dialing.

Hmmm, that's really strange...especially because HTC themselves said it was a known issue......haven't asked TMob yet though. Maybe I should...
In any case I know I'm not the only one without the default Voice Dialer that worked so well under GB.
Currently using Vlingo but not as easy to use as the old Voice Dialer...*sigh*...

Hi masondoctorjt!
Do you think it's possible for you to get the Voice Dialer off of your phone and either post it (to help people like me) or somehow send it to me? I'd like to try it and see if if works on my phone.
Thanks much!
T-Mobile USA was made aware of the issue and has confirmed the T-Mobile ICS update removes BT voice dialing and they are in discussions with HTC over this issue.

I am sorry for not responding. Just finally came back to this thread today. I am now using elegencia tmous ROM and I no longer have the suck tmous ROM. Also I must be thinking if something different. I thought you meant that you press the Mic on the call screen and say the numbers you want to dial, which I had/have. But apparently you guys are talking about something else.

AT&T ONE-X WIFI Problems -- PLEASE HELP!!

I have an AT&T One-X running Viper 2.0 (mind you this issue has existed for me on various roms Cleanrom 5.0, CM10, etc and radio versions not just Viper). Anyhow I am unable to maintain a contant WIFI connection -- it connects and signal/strength are fine however it will drop after a few seconds to a few minutes every time on different access points.
I know there were reported hardware issues with the International version and I more so started to notice this as I am putting my phone on wifi more often to watch various streams from ustream and twitch.tv.
I have an IPAD and a laptop next to me both on the same access points and they don't drop out -- whatever is going on is not specific to the content I am viewing (it also happens when I try and watch content from HBOGO or Youtube).
I am really frustrated at this point and am really starting to wonder if its a hardware issue like the International version -- my biggest fear is I call AT&T for a replacement and get a un-rootable/lockable phone sent back and even then it might still be an issue with the phone its-self...
I would appreciate any help/insight regarding this issue because I am starting to wonder if I am better off just selling this phone and getting a SGS3 (which I really don't want to do unless I have to).

My HOX did that for a while also. Usually turning best WiFi performance under WiFi settings fixed it on sense ROMs. I'm using the new cm10 and it never drops now... but it takes a long time to connect for me. But try that and see if it helps

Sadly this still happens -- even reloaded CM10 and it happens in it also.
I think I remember h8rift saying how HTC massacred the wifi module... I'm thinking once this huge kernel merge gets ironed out we will see wifi problems disappear..

Have you tried using reserved DHCP IP addressing with your router? I was frustrated by similar issues with a mixed OS environment, but reserving specific IPs for each device fixed the problem for me.
Unfortunately I've got a non-rooted Evita, so have no experience with the WiFi radios in CM9/10 or AOSP.

Not the same issue. The WiFi antenna design on the international version is completely different from ours, and we don't suffer from the issue of the case flexing and making the antenna pins lose contact.
Its not to say you don't have a hardware issue. Just not the same one as the international version. People have had some random issues with WiFi on our version, but nothing as widespread as the international version.
Please keep all question related threads in the Q&A section only. Thank you.
