G2x Possibilites - T-Mobile LG G2x

I'm interested in getting a G2x... Looks like good hardware for a good price right now, but I had a few questions to see if it will fit my needs.
-I'm going to be using it wifi-only. I'm planning on installing CSipSimple to use as a VOIP phone. Anyone have experience doing this? On my Samsung moment CSipSimple has terrible issues routing audio and microphone.
-I would like to hook up my wiimote and plug the phone into my TV with HDMI for emulators... Has anyone had experience with doing this? Theoretically it looks like it should work flawless.
-I may in the future want to hook it up to voice/data. But on the cheap through a prepaid carrier like straight talk. You can get sims from straight talk, but will I have to unlock the phone? Is it even possible for this to work? Has anyone here done it before?
-Wifi only, what's the battery life like? Is a full day with moderate usage (screen-on 3 hours sporadic usage, wifi always on for voip calls) possible? Without cell connections I'd think it would last longer than normal.
-Any other issues with the phone that annoy people that might turn me off to the device?
Thanks!

i just ordered one of these, waiting for it to arrive at this very moment
i saw on the LG site a TON of bad reviews on this thing, a lot of them recent. things like the phone rebooting during a call, running hot, locking up to the point you have to remove the battery, bad battery life, and a few others.
but there were just as many good reviews too, best phone ever, no issues at all, etc. and some of those from people saying they have had their phone for over a few months, so i'm hoping mine will be fine
and i too am looking at what i can do with this device. i hope i will not be dissapointed

You came to the right place, the developers here have done a great job making this phone as stable as possible. They are, of course, limited by the LG code that they are working with, but the custom ROMs correct many issues. Of course, if you get a bad phone/bad hardware, not much can be done, but that's a risk with any phone.

Just flash custom ROMs, the hardware on this phone is amazing for such a cheap price, but LG can't code software for crap.
The stock ROM is guaranteed to give you rebooting, overheating, lock ups, bad battery life, etc...
But CM7 based ROMs (NOT CM9 BASED, CM9 IS NOT FINISHED) are all pretty rock solid stable. And even some of the 2.3.3 builds are good, Bionix Reloaded is the only 2.3.3 one that has been recently updated, but man Bionix is smooth as butter.
Have fun with your new powerhouse of a phone.

I can speak specifically to this one cuz I found out the hard way. You'll need to install a CyanogenMod7 based rom for this to work. Unless something has changed, the stock based ROMs don't have the necessary blue tooth profiles to connect a wiimote, sixaxis, etc. I was running Weapon G2x and my wiimote would not connect...so I switched to CM7 and it works.
With that said i love my phone and have little to no issues since I began running custom roms.

I picked up this G2X off craigslist yesterday and after a day I am very pleased. I have CM7 on it with no issues. I have yet to sign up for service but have been making calls and texts using Google voice and groove IP together. Sound quality had been great. I switched from a Nexus S4G

it's an app interface to http://www.google.com/voice
Google Voice is a (free!!) virtual phone service allowing you to make and receive calls/SMS for free from a web browser and forward these calls/SMS to any other phones you own.
GrooveIP is a VOIP app that connects to google voice via your cell phone's wifi connection, so you don't need to rely on a cell voice connection.
The Google Voice android app does the same thing for SMS.

Learn something new every day, thanks!

yeah thats some good info there, thanks for that! i was reading in my t-mobile start guide and it says that wifi calling MAY be metered just like cell phone minutes, i guess i'll have to call them to verify that. one of the reasons i got this was to make free wifi calls, but i will also check out this app!

You want to check out the Talkatone app instead of the Grove IP app.

New G2x Owner!

So coming from my nexus that I have had pretty much since launch, I decided to get the G2x. And just wow. This thing is a beast. Totally outshines my poor old nexus! Love the camera and video recording. My only real annoyance with the phone is the fact that sometimes my data connection becomes active again while I'm connected to WiFi and slows any downloads or what not that I'm currently doing. All in all this thing is a beast, now I am just waiting to see how the batter holds up.

Same here. I switched from my Nexus One a couple weeks ago. I'm really liking this new phone tho. Its blazing fast. Battery life could be better and I miss my colored trackball but other than that this phone is great. I've noticed a few very vocal naysayers here in this forum but don't let it sway you. The phone is a beast for sure.
A couple suggestions to get started to make ur experience better:
- Root and get rid of the T-Mobile bloatware. I ended up with Eaglesblood Froyo 1.0.4 rom. It is a stock-based rom. Its super stable and everything works, all the T-Mobile crap is taken out (wifi calling still there but I like that) and has a black notification bar. Any of the gingerbread roms seem to have several stability issues as well as GPS issues.
- Install Juice Defender from the Market. It has greatly improved my battery life.
Have fun. Its a great phone.

Anyone know how to get rid of a persistent voicemail notification?
I checked all my damn voicemails, deleted most of em, and marked the rest as saved, yet the damn thing stays, and it only does this in froyo. When I was testing GB with CM7, didn't have the damn notification. Thoughts?

Just a little advice from me. Dont read the negatives and take them on as your own.
I've owned the hd2 the vibrant and now this phone. All incredible phones that some how have gained bad reputations but turn out to be really awesome. Running faux asop rom and it rocks. I love it more than my vibrant.

Any freezing or low signals?

Is 2.3.5 any good?

Does it change battery life for the better?
Are data connections actually more reliable?
Any other real improvements??
I no longer have my Nexus, but I will buy another one in a second if the battery life is improved!
UPDATE:
Ok, so far it looks like people are indeed seeing improved signal and speeds.
What seems up in the air is the speaker volume (some are louder, some are not...)
Also unanswered as yet is how this update affects battery life. At least one person is saying his battery has gotten worse...
some say its better, im in mexico right now roaming on Movistar network...i updated, got 2.3.5 and everything seems the same....but probly wana listen out for someone in the usa. i wont be back tilll next sunday

Thanks. In terms of signal being better, is dBm better, or just the # of bars present? (they apparently jacked up the # of bars that show for a given signal strength, similar to what Apple did with the iPhone 4...)

Every small cellphone speaker will distort when turned all the way up. It definitely gets much louder than before which is great for my morning alarm.
It is louder, it was not cracking on mine but the music I listen to doesn't have heavy bass. I should try listening to some club music to test it out lol

I wonder which developer is working on this version right now
I think it would be better getting opinions after a week. Tonight, for my area at least, there was a data outage. I called sprint on another issue and they knew about the data and said it was nationwide. I made the impatient mistake (again) of using the samsung flasher back to stock. Every time I do that, I have to call sprint and have them reset something with my phone and the towers. I get error 16's.
am i missing something.........how are people testing the speakerphone? that is the only thing I really wanted from this update (along with 3G updates since I don't get 4G), and I notice no difference WHATsoever.
were they referring to alarm sounds, music, phone calls....what? did anyone have to perform a hard reset to notice the difference? the sounds have no difference in volume to me, especially phone calls and music.
Wow, google effed this one up. I now have a constant connection to my airave, full bars all the time. Only problem is I cant recieve calls now, they go straight to voicemail. Sprint rep says its a technical issue with the update and it will be looked into. In the mean time I have to unplug my airave and roam at home :/
Yea, as long as signal bars are not green I can recieve a call, as soon as they turn green it goes straight to voicemail. Also, my phone does ring alot louder now.
I've seen really no difference from 2.3.4 to 2.3.5.

Has anyone tried "Tablet talk" SMS app?

I just stumbled on an app called "Tablet Talk" and I love it so far...
I've been looking for something to use to send and received SMS from my TF and this app seems to fill the bill nicely.
It's fast; just as fast as sending messages on my phone itself. The interface is nice, and connnecting is a breeze...
Just letting everyone know in case they are in the market for an app like this.

I use it all the time. It has really been getting a workout since football season started. My son lives across the country and we have been wearing out the airwaves discussing the talent or lack thereof!
I particularly like it's ability to connect both via Bluetooth and Wireless.
Does this use Push for syncing messages?
I'm currently using SyncSMS, which does the job at a bare minimum of whats acceptable. Currently it does not support Push, and relies on preset sync-intervals or manual. Also, even tho it claims to use ~400kb storage, it hugs an entire 38mb (!!!). Quite critical on my quite crappy x8 phone.
If this is in any way smaller, and use Push, I'm all over it.
Edit: Gave it a quick spin (15 minutes refund policy.....). Seemed to be running constantly with icon in status bar (no Push?). Relied on IP address to connect, making it tedious to connect when changing WiFi networks. Shame I did not get a proper chance to see if having this app running 24/7 had any major impact on battery life. Un-installed/refunded for now.

Which is great when you want someone to use two different numbers to txt you through.
I kinda keep my cell and text separate from my GV account, so this app may be what I need.
Yes GV is great but that's beside the point of this thread
I bought the app Tablet talk and am loving it. Simple, easy, and so far not a single issue. It was well worth the $2.99 I paid for it. I probably would have paid up to $4.99 for it above that I would have gone with one of the other offerings.
I leave my tablet and SGS III connected via blue tooth and leave the wifi just for internet usage. The small size of the app is really a good thing as well, since I only have the 16GB edition.
I would highly recommend the app to anyone looking to send SMS from their tablet, using their current phone number. For me it keeps confusion down with my contacts.
Yeah, I use Tablet Talk a little.. ahem.. I have over 6000 text messages in the messaging thread to my Fiancée.. And I use it ALL the time. When I have to use my phone to send a text I start to get the hives. It is by far the app that I use the most on my tablet. I have kind of a low self esteem and she is a HOT Russian (previous model / previous gymnast) and I need to make sure she thinks about me every 5 minutes or so..BRB.... Yeah.. she's still there. ahem.
Anyway.. Really is a great app. When there was an issue with MMS which I found right away after an update the dev responded right away and sent me code to fix it the next day and quickly updated it for everyone.
I of course just got her a TF700 for Christmas and I need to somehow get something that works with her Iphone now. It's too bad TT doesn't have an iphone client.. That of course would be the bomb.
Great app.

Yes, love it.
Very good app. You can sync messages through by connecting through bluetooth "less battery then wifi", if they are on the same wifi network "aka home", or if you are on your phones wifi hotspot "aka using your phone for mobile internet"
You can also sync all messages from your phone to your tablet so you arnt out of your conversation. You can sync anytime. Dark theme to save battery.
It is relly nice to text on from your number walking around your house while your phone is charging
I'm now too using tablet talk mine came with a phone dialer too for Bluetooth usage tho

Groove IP!! Anyone tried it?

I am planning on buying the Groove Ip app that lets you make and recieve calls over ur 3g/4g and wifi and doesnt use your plan minutes. I am wondering if anyone here has used the app and if you can share your feedback? How's the quality of incoming and outgoing calls over 4g/4g? Is the call quality better over wifi? I tried gv over data with sipdroid but the set up was complicated and had to do it manually and the call quality was still not good. I am assuming groove ip does all this in the backend automatically.
Thanks.
So finally bought the app. I am on Tmobile Vibrant (Galaxy S) with froyo (rooted with Teamwhiskey's Bionix-V 1.3.1).... can anyone suggest the optimal settings? I have been getting poor performance and haven't found a configuration for GrooveIP that works perfect.
i used it with the default settings on my captivate and SGS2 with no problems.
The app is pretty impressive. I noticed the speaker sound was a little low so I increased it from settings and also increased the mic volume. Don't really know if its making any difference.

I think you might want to try "talkatone":
http://www.talkatone.com/android-preview.html
They have a wonderful app for iOS, and recently they started working on an Android version. (free app, Ad supported, with pro version available as well)
It is still in alpha 3, but it's not that bad...I think you should give it a try if you are a regular Google Voice user.
I've had a good experience with Groove IP over my WiFi network--don't use it much over 3G. I turn off echo canceling because I think it interferes with touch tones when using voice mail systems. Easy set up if you have a Google Voice number.
Works good for me default settings on Captivate and Atrix over WiFi, even with no sim card.
I use it at a hospital I do some work for. Have no cell signal, just wifi. Works ok. time of day seems to affect quality.
It seems as good as any other IP phone I've used.
Yeah, Groove IP, definitely worth it. I have it on my HTC Droid Eris rooted running sense 2.3. I use it all the time and the quality is good and I use it on my HTC Droid Incredible running Prime XL sense 3.5. It runs great.
The other person complains of echo @ his end. O tried lowering mic gain and speaker which helped but didnt completely resolved the problem.

Groove IP Disappeared from the Market..w/my new $5!!
Groove IP totally disappeared from the face of the Earth today(Android Market). I just paid $4.99 for the App two days ago and there gone. I know there not a fly by night app cause I have been hearing good things bout since my WinMo days. Is this want they do when they're updating the App? Is this normal or has me and many other been hood-winked??
U should make a titanium backup of the app incase they don't come back. This is very strange though.

Great app. Those of you having issues it may be your connection. I never use mine over 3g just on my wifi at home (most other wifi are slower than my 3g).
As for the optimal settings I just use default. if you have latency or echo you can try the options. I think those issues are due to the connection as other voip have same problems. voip is not perfect yet, I dont use if for important calls but for those long calls to family/friends its perfect.

USA ICS release - T-Mobile/HTC update

Full article from Android and Me
HTC has delivered a ROM to us however it is still having issues the reason that other sensation types have the update without issue and ours did not come out that way is because every ROM must be adapted to the hardware of the device because we use a different radio than other providers and also have applications such as wifi calling it also has to be compatible with those. What the HTC rep told you is most likely correct because once a ROM is delivered we have 2 weeks to test it and then approve it or send it back they then have 4 weeks to fix the bugs and return it back to us, where we are exactly in that process I do not know but that is how a ROM is delivered to the customer.
The original ROM was not delivered to us in November, we started testing it just recently but I think it has been longer than 2 weeks so at this point HTC most likely has the ball.
You bought a phone and it has been announced that you are getting ICS you have every right to know what’s going on with it and when you can see these awesome features. I did go into a lot of detail about how a ROM gets to the end user (you guys) but that wasn’t to point fingers only so you would have a better understanding of why you don’t have it yet, the bottom line is the Sensation has T-Mobile’s and HTC’s name all over it and both companies want to make you proud to be a Sensation owner so we are working as fast as we can to deliver it but also want to make sure that it stands up to your expectations.

A fairly meaty update that helps explain the process, the holdup and a possible time frame for when we might see the release.
So T-Mobile can't get their WiFi Calling and other bloatware to work, but our custom ROM chefs don't seem to have a problem?
Thank God for our chefs!!!

It seems that HTC can't get the Wifi calling to work within spec. It didn't work the first time and TMO told HTC that they needed to work on it some more. It's going back and forth between TMO and HTC.
And no offense to our devs here, but lets be realistic. Our roms here aren't without their issues. Ie. wifi calling still crashing, mms not working, proximity sensor issues, wifi issues, bt issues, etc. but the positive is that the roms here get better than their respective base.

Now I don't think that's fair our devs don't have the resources tmob has and we are ahead of them with 4.0 almost working and got 60 3.6 roms out there if one dev had what HTC had or tmobl we be in next stage ics 4.0 is far from last Rom this phone will do
I do think HTC watches this as do all phones and leak so they have free help

I don't think it's fair that the devs don't have access to the same resources that tmo and htc have either. If they did we would probably also have perfect 'native' ports of Samsung's, Sony's, and Moto's UIs, lol. it is what it is. the devs have improved on what's been released (although, I would like to see a rom that emphasizes stability instead of tweaks - Maybe I'll take a crack at it if I can find enough time, we'll see).
As far as free help is concerned... I don't know how much work they actually take off XDA (although, i'm sure it's happened, i feel like it's little). The X10 (in which I had a little previous experience) had a number of things fixed that's never (and never will be) fixed in any official rom.
but the original point was to contradict this statement: "our custom ROM chefs don't seem to have a problem" and "So T-Mobile can't get their WiFi Calling and ...". There are issues and it's not just TMO but HTC can't fix wifi calling in a timely manner. Just trying to dispel inaccuracies (IMHO).
I would rather have a clean ROM straight from HTC without T-Mobile adding junk to it anyway, including WiFi calling...
Well what it is that tmobl locked the phone up so it can't use att making HTC redo there **** its out everywhere but here in us
Looks like a corp had a hand trying to block the progress of something with hardware changes and bloatware I would love a Rom from HRC or google with out tmob trash but I am not on tmob now so I have no bloat lol

Speak for yourself, my friend.
I'm using bluetooth, video recording, wifi, wifi calling, all cell radio features, proximity working find, light sensor as well.
I don't mms. I gmail.
So. The devs and chefs are doing a FANTASTIC job, especially with these kernels.
Just like i tell everyone in every single rom forum for the sensation. T-Mobile's Wifi calling is just useless bloatware that is a program easy as hell for, supposed amazing techs of their caliber to make and now we have to wait for official Ics due to an app that don't work stock or rooted. Everytime i use wifi calling, and yes on stock, all i get is" HUH,WHAT DID YOU SAY, I CANT HEAR YOU",. And thats why it also rarely works in roms. It's not HTC's fault T-Mobile has a shi%$ program that is useless out the box. Wouldn't be useless if it ever worked. And now we have to wait for Ics because of it.

Ditto. I've been on ARHD for three weeks and I have not looked back. I haven't found anything that doesn't work.

Wifi calling is a great feature. I never have problems with voice quality. Maybe your interner sucks.

I agree Wifi calling is not perfet but for me it is a must. I use it when I'm overseas and in basements where I can't get reception. My friends who have iphones are jealous because they have to go to the first floor to get reception and make calls.
We are not getting the official update until tmobile makes sales on the one-s ..it will probably be in May when we see the update..good thing I have a nexus with 4.0.4..**

^ Likewise I depend on wifi calling. I'll pass on the other bloatware, but this isn't an optional app for me. I'm afraid that I've had no consistent luck with the ROMs available here.
I suspect that will change once T-Mobile has released their ICS update with a working configuration and (possibly) an updated app. In the meantime, I am content to wait.
It's based on my opinion.**

WiFi calling is not bloatware to people who use it. I use it everyday at home. There's no way I can make or receive call without it. I also use it every time I'm overseas. For me, WiFi calling is a must. That's why I don't dare play around different roms for fear of messing up the WiFi calling feature. I can also wait for the official update with a working WiFi calling.
