So I got my infuse yesterday and I love it. I have a unlimited data plan from my iPhone. I haven't actually had an iPhone since the 4 came out last summer. I had a desire z and then a desire HD. I had no issues with them and my data plan once the apn had been set.
Since those phones are not '4g' I wasn't bothered by att. Now that I'm on the infuse and it uses 4g, I got a text a few hours after using it saying I need a 4g plan. I'm not willing to give up my unlimited data for a restricted 4g plan. Even if I don't need that much data. So do I have any alternatives?
Thanks in advance
I didn't want to make a new thread, but after using my infuse for an hour non stop with wifi on and browsing the web, my battery temp is 41c. And the battery drained from 100 to 65. That seems extremely hot to me...
@eatjello
Same exact thing I'm having, so hot, and charging is so slow I'm hating this phone a little, and continuous use last me just 4hrs wifi turned off and gps off. Charging takes 4 hrs +

I had the same issue, go and trade the phone. Either the battery of the phone is bad.
Someone suggested to turn airplane mode on and back off and it might fix it (dont know how).
Also you do not need to loose your unlimited. There's no 4G plan, best buy did the calling but there's a unlimited plan for the infuse, it's called SmartPhone Personal.
Here's a text from ATT on how to get it.
Data Plan for SmartPhones. Unlimited domestic data usage. Only available for upgrades. Requires customers to be on a "Gold List" SmartPhone Plan prior to upgrade to 4G device.
I get the same messages in my email & text from AT&T. I also have the iPhone unlimited data plan. I wonder if not having the right plan doesn't allow me to utilize the full speed of hspa+. I get like 3mbps down & 1.26mbps up. I'm also using my iPhone 4 microsim in my Infuse.

If i bought this phone off of someone else who bought it from ATT, can i still trade it in for a new one?
I'm a Rep with at&t and you don't have to give up that unlimited plan. We still have the ability to grandfather even the 4G plan. Trust me...I deal with poor customers all day who receive invalid info from dumbass reps who can't read outside our training manuals. Call our CARE and tell them you need to switch your data plan to HSPA+ unlimited. Even if it means calling back ten times, don't stop until you get it!

idk if there is a difference but the lady who did my change told me that since it was a 4G phone they give us a plan that has the advantage to access 4G when available idk if thats true but thats what i was told

You just have to call cs, it is free unlimited data plan for 4g phones, i was offered the same with my inspire and i am presently on it.

Free unlimited data? Not sure what you mean by that. If you already had a data plan, it was free to switch it over to the unlimited 4G. but you can't get the data free.
I had my unlimited iphone grandfathered over to the 4G unlimited data. but my "4G" speeds suck. they barely hit 2mps. no faster than my 3G plan was.
I upgraded to an Inspire. I had 3g on my account, so I called ATT to get it changed to 4g. The associate I spoke to said he couldn't give me unlimited 4g, even though I was grandfathered in with 3g unlimited by the resolutions department. Is there any real reason to switch to 4g, if it comes at the cost of having a 2gb usage cap?
Guess it all depends on the rep you get, but I can assure you that its still active. Just did it a couple weeks ago. I would recommend going to an att corporate store, not a vendor. Whatever you do, dont ditch the unlimited. Good luck

1. Stick to unlimited 3G
2. Root ur phone and turn ENG S-OFF
3. Install custom ROM and get "H" (AT&T's equivalent of 4G) speeds
I have rooted it.

I do have an H+ icon in the top right corner of the phone's screen. Someone I know used to do the old imei switcharoo to nonsmartphone data plan, but that doesn't work on Android phones like it did on the tilt2 (according to a good friend of mine.) Does Eng Off have anything to do with that? He said it worked fine on the nonsmartphone plan for a couple of days, and then when he downloaded his first app from the market. *****smacked. Got an mms saying he'd been switched to a suitable smartphone data plan. Misses the tilt2 to the tune of about 30 bucks a month.

You might as well get this issue resolved now, because in the future when all the true 4g LTE phones come out, your 3g plan might not get you LTE speeds. Currently a 3g plan is enough to get you "4g" speeds, because AT&T is calling HSPA+ "4g" (my old iPhone 4 is a "3g" phone but I get "4g" HSPA speeds on it). There is no way of knowing if a 3g plan will get you true LTE speeds in the future, and you'll wish you had grandfathered yourself into the unlimited 4G plan now. I would take stickbo's suggestion and go in person to an AT&T store and make them grandfather you into the unlimited 4g plan.
you can keep it if you are grandfathered and have 4g unlimited. i got the text when i got my inspire. called and verified it would remain grandfathered, and it does show unlimited online. i have a premier account, but i doubt it makes a difference
HSPA+ =\= HSPA. Get your account provisioned right, even if you have to call another agent or go to the store to get it done. Remember, carriers can limit which tech you are able to connect to. If you are limited to HSPA only you may never get the max out of this phone, let alone future ones.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA Premium App
Sorry for my ignorance but AFAIK there is no 4G card and/or plan or special provisioning at ATT at current time.
You (we?) should be good with a "3G" SIM to fetch 4G speeds where they are available (roll-out from ATT is rather slow). 4G LTE IS indeed another story.
Regarding grandfathering in, ATT tried the same thing with me and others to "downgrade" the plan (PDA personal 30 bucks a month unlimited data) to 2GB/month. A single call to ATT solved this problem because they have to grandfather you in if you are willing to pay 30 bucks for unlimited instead of 25 for 2 GB capped. With new plans it's a different story, they will be capped to 2 GB unless you do the iPhone 2G trick (search the forum).
Just my $ 0.02
I am on a medianet plan and my phone says I have hspa+. How can I confirm this? Medianet apns have been working fine but when I called about having unsigned apps activated ota they said my 4G might not work so great. Seems ok although hspa+ not 4g or anywhere near it.
I got unlimited 4g when I got my Inspire 1 month ago. I just called ATT support and they verified that you can get unlimited with 4g anywhere in the US. Talk to another agent. Most of them are stupid. When I got my inspire I was told that I couldnt even get 4g without a new simcard lol.

Call them up. Threaten to leave because they wont grandfather you in. I assure you they will. I just switched from a grandfathered unlimited iphone plan that I got grandfathered from a medianet unlimited plan(They grandfathered me from medianet unlimited because i told them the tos doesn't say you have to have unlimited smartphone data to get grandfathered it just says unlimited data. They ended up putting in the unlimited iphone data plan for users that dont have required data plan). I had no issues what so ever if the rep refuses ask to speak with a manager. They can change it.

There is no unlimited 4G as well as there is no true indication of 4G. There is limited or unlimited DATA, period.
Thought this would be clear. The little + doesn't tell you anything beside that you have "at least" a 3G connection and that you're not running on edge!
You either need a good GSM test tool - even this may tell you only UMTS or WCDMA or simply speed test. 3G should be capped at about 3.5 mbps down, 4G/HSPA+ will run between 4 and 8 mbps down, the latter in good areas.

Your only technically right. Try running your service without the "4g" data plan (your data speeds wont change i know i ran the 3g data plan then switched to the "4g" data plan). Att will constantly txt and email about needing the correct data plan and then change it themselves like they do for the iphone. And you may not get grandfathered over. The op is only asking a question about what he is being told by att and also looking for some advice to keep his unlimited data.

That's similar to how my upgrade worked too. Originally an unlimited MediaNet plan (with an Ericsson clamshell), upgraded into an unlimited 3G plan (AT&T Tilt 1), upgraded again into their unlimited "4G*" plan with the Inspire.

Premier account DOES make a difference. I can get any smartphone (exception of iphone) without the otherwise mandatory data plan. And sometimes when I choose early upgrades I get the price between the regular upgrade and regular early upgrade (e.g., instead of paying 399 for Atrix under early upgrade, I got it for 275).

I changed phones (Fuze to Inspire and had PDA unlimited since my Tilt/Kaiser), they tried to pull the 2 gig cap stunt on me - complaint - got unlimited. Never got any emails or other notifications that I require a 4G plan (which IMO doesn't exist anyway) and can get up to 8.5 mbps download in good areas - so I must have INDEED 4G 'cuz 3G wont support these speeds.

You keep saying the 4g plan doesn't exist, but it does. It doesn't make a difference in speeds, and it might just be a technicality, but there are separate plans. This is how they are worded in my family account under "manage features" (I've got 1 Inspire and 3 iPhones in my family account):
-SmartPhone Personal (Unlimited) <<this is the grandfathered 4g unlimited plan
-DataPro 2GB for 4G Smartphones
-DataPlus 200MB for 4G Smartphones
iPhone plans have a different name:
Data Plan for iPhone (Unlimited)
DataPro 2 GB for iPhone
DataPlus 200 MB for iPhone
There may come a day when having a 4g plan DOES make a difference in your speeds. That is why I was telling the OP to try to grandfather into the unlimited 4g plan NOW, because these unlimited plans are going the way of the dinosaur. Once you lose that grandfathered connection, it is gone forever.
I have:
Grandfathered unlimited data with 300 texts for 24.99usd/mo.
At 4g I get around 2.55mpbs up and .71mpbs down (all approximate of course).
When I was live chatting with tmo, the rep to activate my new SIM card as well as confirming my IMEI number, the rep said I needed an android plan. I responded that I had a nexus one and was running 3mpbs easy with the same data plan. And they responded with the blanket statement of you won't be getting the full data 4g speeds without it. Which I think is BS ....
So what plan are you guys on and what are your speeds using speedtest?

If you were getting 3Mbps on your Nexus One (3G), and only .71 on the Sensation (4G), what makes you think that it's BS that you won't get 4G speeds without paying for a new data plan? The facts you've stated prove that this may be the case.
With 4G, you should be getting at least 10Mbps down I'm presuming, as even with my Samsung Vibrant I'm getting consistently 6Mbps down on a 3G connection.
I just purchased the Sensation at Wal-Mart here in Virginia and its amazing. T-Mobile doesn't have a store where I live and the only place you can buy one of there phones is at Wal-Mart or Radio Shack but T-Mobile is the only one of the big 4 that has 4G in my area and MAN IS IT 4G! As soon as I left the store I did a speedtest with the app and hit 6.8 mbps and 7.5 mbps! It flies! The reason though that T-Mobile isn't popular here is the coverage is spotty at best but I have a sprint phone also and i ported my number to google a while back so when I know I'm in a bad coverage area for T-Mobile I will just use my Sprint phone. Getting ready to test the camera out and see how good that is. I'm on the unlimited data plan btw...
I'm trying to get my facts straight really. From what I have read so far in the various threads is that some with the older plans (not android) have the same speeds. So I am curious in what people are getting with the 4g speeds and what data plan they are using to get their speeds. I mean if I 'need' to buy into another plan to get the speeds and that is a said fact, I will get the 'android' plan.
I don't have an Android plan. I just renewed my contract last month and got the unlimited web, 5gb, for $20 and was running an iPhone 3g (edge only). Last week I purchased the Sensation at Walmart and no changes were made to my account/plan. I live in the Phoenix market and my speeds vary depending on location. I have seen them as high as 9 mbps and as low as 1 mbps. I would say I average around 3 mbps
Also, check out this thread over in the development section regarding increasing your speeds -http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1118017
There is no difference. Speed varies are from many other variables, but data plans are data plans. The only differences between android data plans are the amount of mb you get.

I have done the Data Latency mod and it really didn't improve anything. So the old data plans people are using are still able to get the 4g speeds?
i pay £15.00 a month ($24.26) with my carrier/network: O2
I get
300 minutes to any carrier/network any time
unlimited calls to other o2 customers anytime
unlimited texts to any carrier/network anytime
unlimited internet anytime
30 day notice contract, no cancellation charges, no lengthy ties, cancel when i want it to cancel.
Using the automatic server selection on speedtest.net app, I get around 3mbps downloads and .17mbps up. But knowing I am in San Antonio I chose that server, even though it says its further away. Selecting that server I get 6.72mbps download and .29mbps up.
Are there any other speed test apps out there? Im going to check now.

Ok, so while driving home I saw that my 4g bars were maxed and did a speedtest at a stoplight and I the got up to 8mbps up....so I guess my unlimited data plan does work still.
Please all, when you post your speeds, please also post what type of data plan you are using (ie unlimited plan, 5gb plan, or 200mb android plan). Thanks.
Data Plan = MyTouch3g $25
SIM card = old SIM with no numbers on it (considered their 2g SIM)
Soft Cap = None I've ever hit
4g speeds = 6-7 Mbs average, 9-10 Mbs max seen
Speeds remain the same for me even after I get my text warning and account message about the 5 Gb cap. At 8 Gb right now this month. This is an older plan though.
Use the FCC speedtest app made by ookla. The speedtest.net app they have tends not to be accurate. It sometimes shows that you have 7 or 8 mbps down but when you check the history for your speed test its actually lower. Their other app the FCC speed test is more accurate imo

Speedtest is accurate, but ONLY from the history screen. Don't believe the display speed.
Thanks trying it out now.
Seems like the FCC app works a bit better in terms of connecting. However, I am in San Antonio, TX and the closest server is in California. I have changed the server to Dallas and ran the test.
I am now getting about 3-5 mpbs uploads with 4 bars at 4g. And yes you do not need to go to the history screen to get the true reading anymore

I am in Orlando , which tmo says is one of there stronger 4g markets...
I consistently get speeds less than 1.5 dl and .50 ul. My nexus S and Nexus run a consistent 3 dl and .90 ul.. I cant figure out why this phone has slower speeds.. Sim card is up to date. I have had the same android data for some time now.. Even my lady gets a 3 or better dl on her g2x and we are in the same house. Before you say switch the phone and sim, I have already done both and it is the same.
I just got a sensation. Currently I still have the G1unlimited data plan. Do I need to pay more to get the 4g speeds? I think my data speeds were better with my nexus one. I don't want to call tmo because I would expect them to say "oh, you have a 4g phone, you need the 4g plan to go with it. Would you like the 2 TB plan or the 5 TB plan? That'll be $40/month"
No, you dont

+1 to the G1 Unlimited Data.

I'm on a G1 unlimited data 400txt or$25. It transferred no problems. I ordered my Sensation over the phone and discussed the data/txt package and data caps openly with the representative. They will let you keep it, with a 5gb cap.

Thanks for the replies. I don't have a data cap on my and I'm not wanting to take the step unless it is absolutely necessary.
Last month I used 6GB of data and that was pretty hard to do. When I decided to do it I had 5 days left on my billing cycle and was just under a gig. It was pretty dificult to use that much data in such a short time.

I have this same plan w/txt...what 4G speeds are you getting?
I'm the OP. The best I've been able to get is .84 Mbps down, .71Mbps up.
I'm getting 2.80 Mbps down and 1.68 Mbps up at last look...but I expect more from 4G!
Yeah, it's pretty lame. I'd be happy with 1Mbps down and .5up.
Where are you located with such slow speeds? Is anybody else there getting better results?
Home is worthless for 4g for me. Im constantly on my wifi. But at work I get 4-5 bars and get around 5mpbs up and 1.5 down. Driving home, I get constant full 5 bars and get 6-8mpbs.
Same for me, those speed I mentioned earlier were from home pretty slow. I tried it from work and was able to get 2 up and 1.5 down so I'm ok with those speeds. I'm still not blown away but it's a little better than I had.
no because android data plans are all the same, now they just limit your plan to 5gb.
Looks like 3gb cap for 3g and 5gb for LTE

I'm OK with this cap, I use 2-3gb every month and that's using 2 full batteries a day on my SR for Facebook, XDA, Reddit, and YouTube videos

So, the big question is
Do we get seperate caps or is it 5GB if we have an LTE device?
I know there are times I am not on LTE(depending on the area) Does the HSPA+ count towards the LTE limit?
Now I never get close to 3GB but still would like to know.

Doesn't seem like it. It just says 4g lte smartphone, so if your not in a LTE area, but have a LTE phone you would have a 5gb cap

Bummer. I couldn't deal with the throttle any longer so I switched to a tiered plan last month.

I think for an LTE imei registered smartphone it's 5gb. I can live with this, pretty much like the other carriers. If you don't have an lte, you're more likely going to get one in the future anyways. Now, let's see that data sharing policy in place ;-)

Finally, and I can live with 5gb. I just wonder now what the throttle speeds are. I wonder if att knew they where going to start getting sued LOL. Also I would like to think when we move to "5G" and such out data limits will increase. I think att knew they couldn't do this so they where super aggressive to make people drop their plans and only the diehards are left. Now that they reached a breaking point they are now being more fair. Yay for that Guy who sued them lol

When they say they will throttle us LTE users at 5GB, does that mean they are going back to the 2G edge speeds for the rest of the billing cycle, making our phones once again unusable, or is it going to be more of a Verizon type of throttling where it's only if it's during a certain peak-usage time on a congested tower, and even then it's down to 3G speeds?
If it's the latter, I am pleased. 5GB of LTE and then HSPA+ for anything over is fine by me. I must point out that non of the APN bypass things work for me at all anymore, so if after 5GB I'm on HSPA+, well, HSPA+ is still plenty fast for me.
If it's the former, however, then I'll still be just as disappointed. Actually pissed and outraged. Going from 2GB to 5GB to start throttling really is not much of an improvement to me, since if I wanted to, at these insane LTE speeds they are giving me in San Francisco (maxed out around 50Mbs down), I could download 5GB in about 15 minutes on LTE speeds. So hypothetically once my billing cycle reset, if after 15 minutes of heavy LTE usage I was then throttled to EDGE speeds for the rest of the month, I'll be pissed.
So yeah, anyone know? Are they still going to throttle at EDGE speeds for the remainder of the month regardless of peak times/congested towers/etc? If so, then this new 5GB LTE cap is still complete and utter bull****, just like 2GB was. But if it's NOT EDGE speeds, and not necessarily all the time until the next billing cycle, then it's welcomed.

It is based on you data plan regardless of you are getting LTE is the way I read it. You might travel to an LTE area. If you have a LTE data plan it will be 5GB.
Straight from the web site.
Looks like you will remain throttled for the remainder of the billing cycle.
I understand the throttle speeds are supposed to be more usable and not the 56k modem speed crap they've been doing.
If you have a smartphone that works on our 3G or 4G network and still have an unlimited data plan,
You'll receive a text message when your usage approaches 3GB in one billing cycle.
Each time you use 3GB or more in a billing cycle, your data speeds will be reduced for the rest of that billing cycle and then go back to normal.
The next time you exceed that usage level, your speeds will be reduced without another text message reminder.
If you have a 4G LTE smartphone and still have an unlimited data plan, the same process applies at 5GB of data usage, instead of 3GB.
You'll still be able to use as much data as you want. That won't change. Only your data throughput speed will change if you use 3GB or more in one billing cycle on a 3G or 4G smartphone or 5GB or more on a 4G LTE smartphone.

Well the fact that that iPhone user sued over not getting true unlimited and won probably influenced them a bit, not to mention I'm sure they were tired of getting reports from their CSRs of angry customers calling in to ***** about using 2.1 GB and being throttled and threatening to cancel unless they got some perk in response.
I also can live with 5GB. The only time I used excessive data was when I had to stream my SiriusXM all day at work. Now that I figured out how to get a signal with my regular radio I can safely stay below or around 2GB. The fact that I get up to 5GB because I have an LTE phone (although no LTE coverage, boo) and I'm paying $30 instead of $50 AND I just get slow speeds as opposed to $10 charge for going over has me satisfied.
im happy with 5GB.. its not "unlimited" but i think its manageable
the 2GB was BS which is why in my protest i was hitting 80GB a month but my avg is 3.5-4gb so im happy
no more protesting for me =)

Well what is "more usable"? 3G speeds? Somewhere between EDGE and 3G?
I'm totally satisfied with this, as I never go over 5GB monthly, but I do go over 2GB.
We have won the battle.... but not the war my unlimited data friends. LOLOL
