[Q] Update via Kies - Galaxy 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I tried many different things like installing the oldest stock Eclair firmwares and old Froyo firmwares but when I connect my phone, Kies tells me that there are no updates. I'm getting really angry about this. Can someone give me a solution please? I'm really, but really tired of this.
Please, don't start about flashing with Odin please.

If you want to have an older build, you will have to push it by Odin .
Kies won't show you another build than the latest in your region .

So, which one should I try first to make sure I get an update?

Flash One of the 2.1 Firmware from this Link http://www.sammobile.com/showthread.php?t=12
Try to reinstall Kies
Then connect your Apollo to your PC .
It should propose you an update normally

Kies never seemed to work for me after many stressful hours. Now i just flash stock ROM's via odin. Just go to the Samfirmware website and navigate from then.

Same here, but instead of flashing stock ROM's via ODIN, I flashed Kyrillos' ROM OC and my phone now runs much better than it used to

SGS bricked! Please help or mom will kill me

Dear Friends,
I happened to have a perfectly working rooted SGS running JPK on Froyo until a while ago. When I tried installing fonts with typefresh. This is where everything went haywire. The phone now doesn't want to boot. It says SGS I9000 and vibrates there 4 times and repeats the vibrating cycle. I want the phone to be working again else my mother will murder me. I tried going to the recovery mode and tried to do a factory restore but that didn't help. Tried to reflash the custom ROM I downloaded from this site (can't find that link) using ODIN but it doesn't work either. While reflashing I did not check the repartition tab. What are the possible solutions here?? KIES doesn't detect phone in download mode. Is there any link from where I can download the factory shipped froyo rom and try reflashing the same via ODIN.
Guys please help it has now turned into a Black Screen Of Death. Though I can still go back to Download mode....please help guys this is getting from bad to worse....
Update: The phone now only goes to download mode...
BUMP! Please guys a few hours before mom comes home from work...
Try flashing a 2.1 firmware with Odin.
Google samfirmware.
Sent from my GT-I5700 using XDA App
You could also try flashing
Froyo that does not brick
and then flash to JI6
EDIT:
Do you have the drivers set up for your device?
Also, What device are you using? The SGS line has many phones. My advice above was dependent on it being a Vibrant
Yes I do have the drivers for my device. I'll be trying 2.1 in a while. What are the chances of Samsung giving me a replacement for the device??
I live in India. We don't get the Vibrant here. It's just plain old Samsung Galaxy S GTi9000

If you can reach download mode, find you favorite firmware in one of the guides on XDA, and using Odin flash it.
If you know what firmware you were on, you can also just reflash the PDA file of that firmware. The PDA file is Packages inside the rar file you download from samfirmware.com
Best thing is to find a guide, and follow it.
I'd JPK before things went haywire. I'm wondering what's the difference between JPK and JPM. Which one should I go for??
I'm planning to flash to JM8 then doing either JPK/JPM. Is this fine?? Or should I directly flash with JPK/M and forget about JM8? Which one is better K or M? Anything else I need to be aware of before I take the plunge??

Hey pal.
It really doesn't matter which firmware you flash. Over the time, I realized that what works for one does not necessarily work for the other. It really is a very subjective thing.
Between JPK and JPM, the later (JPM) is the latest release. If froyo excites you, go for either JPM or even JP6 (JP6 being a day newer than JPM and recommended i suppose). If eclair suits your use, I would suggest JM9

Eclair - JM9: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=802909

It really is not difficult flashing firmwares on the i9000. Just follow the instructions from the thread to the dot and you are all set to go. In the same breath, I would also go as far to suggest that you stay away from custom ROM's till you get familiar with the process of flashing ROM's and troubleshooting (in case anything goes wrong). Stick to the stock ROM's and you should be good to begin with.
Do update on your progress.
Cheers.....
Fixed it. Flashed JPK everything working now! Thanks for all the tips and inputs!

Stock 2.2

OK fellas, I have a brand new Captivate. Build is 1102. The phone shipped with 2.2. I bricked the first one so bad I had no choice but to replace it. The second one was almost to that point before I got Odin 3-click to get back to stock 2.1 update 1. Now I'm trying to get back to stock 2.2 and I can't seem to find anything relating on how to do that from my situation. I have literally been up for 38 hours working on this. Took me the first 24 just to get 2.1 on it. I am really stuck here. If anyone has a tool, or a guide, or a hint or a .9mm that can get 2.2 on my phone, please throw me a freaking bone...
Thanks in advance
up for 36 hours isnt going to help.
go get some sleep. come back later.
wait...
you are on your 3rd cappy and still dont know what to do?
Wait so it came with 2.2 you used odin to go to 2.1 and now you wanna go back to where you started?
Ummm ... have you tried kies mini?
When I couldn't use Kies Mini to update my phone from Eclair, I used ODIN 3 (not one click) to upgrade to Froyo - using the image found http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11526718&postcount=1
My build is 1011

Im on my second Captivate. I was actually able to bring it back from brick by building a jig.
@studacris::: It came with 2.2, i flashed a custom rom which was giving me problems, tried flashing back and it failed leaving me with a brick. Built a jig and flashed odin 3-click which put 2.1 on it. I tried to use mini kies but it says my phones firmware is unregistered and will not let me update it...

turn on usb debugging before you connect it to kies
i have not tried the following link but I saved the file just in case I needed it. According to the post that I download the file from, it said its supposed to take you back to JI6:
download here
just be careful because I did not test this file myself
Use the jf6(2.1) odin one click and then there is a file you can use in the odin standalone to get you to kb1(2.2).

Please push *2767*4387264636# or download SGS Tools and select the second option in the Secret Codes section. This will output your product code. If it says anything other than SGH-I897ZKAATT, your product code has probably been tainted, which causes the Kies "unregistered device" error.
The reason this always happened for me is that the product code was changed by the custom ROM. If you do not have a backup of your EFS partition, then correcting this will require a hex editor. I used the method described here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=880223 . Messing around with EFS is inadvisable unless you know perfectly what you are doing. (Trust me on this as Sammy has my first phone for this reason alone.) It wont hurt anything to have an incorrect product code, aside from not being able to update to new software through Kies, but if you mess up anything inside of the file that is edited during the process in the forum link listed above, your radio firmware won't know what its own IMEI is. This can cause your phone to stop functioning as a phone.
The first thing that you should do before flashing any ROM is to backup EFS. There is a method for that here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=859914 . I backed up EFS using every backup method described there (there are two or three I think), then I copied those backups to every thumb drive and storage device I have. I always have restored using the "tarball" method and have used Kies to get back to 2.2 about 20 times without the "unregistered device" issue.
So the most important question is - Do you have a backup of your EFS? (please say yes) If so, then it is just as simple as restoring EFS.
Another possibility if your redneck.nerdishness extends to Linux usage is to use Heimdall for your Froyo upgrade. I used that on my phone when Kies mini was failing on me. Search for Heimdall in the Captivate and standard Galaxy S forums, then follow the instructions to use it with the stock update.zip file linked in the forums.

Hey, good thing for you is that the screen you are describing IS normal download mode. With the 2.3.6 update came an update to the way download mode looks and works. That custom download binary:NO just means that you haven't loaded any custom binaries to the phone (you're on the stock one), and where it says current binary, it lists which version you are on: in this case, official Samsung.
Nothing is wrong, and all is as it should be.
Thanks a million. I was worried for bit. I have an other question that hopefully you can help me out with. I have been trying to use odin and superoneclick since I updated to 2.3.6 and I can't get the phone to work with either odin or superoneclick. It worked fine with both programs before the update. I really wanna root the phone but haven't been able to. Hope you or anyone can help me out.

seems like SOC doesnt work with the official update
and try re installing drivers or using different USB ports on PC before giving up
try each at least 3 times and make sure you are not using a hub or anything
and you have a direct USB connection
Heimdall and Odin get picky sometimes
As jayRokk says, uninstall your Samsung drivers and Kies installation in Control Panel / Programs and Features (or Add Remove Programs). Reinstall Kies to be sure that your drivers are installed correctly (This is for Odin, to get drivers for Heimdall you have to use the zadig program that comes with Heimdall to install a different driver on one specific port.).
Then, you might want to try this Odin package that I put together to make it easy to get stock AT&T Gingerbread with root.:

samsung showcase HELP!!!

I apologize in advance, since I know people have asked questions similar to this already. But I am desperate for help, as I have been trying to fix my phone for 3 days now, and have not gotten anywhere!!! so here is my story/problem.
I was trying to do an update on my samsung showcase (cspire) using kies, and during the download it was interrupted somehow. The phone was bricked. (i think) so then I found something called one-click unbrick. after that i'm able to put the phone in download or recovery mode.
So i have been trying to get factory rom back on my phone. I downloaded odin3 v1.70 and v1.82 (i have tried both of these) and i have downloaded atlas 2.2 for pit and I have tried both EH09_modem_CS.TAR.MD5 and EI20.tar.md5\EI20.tar.md5. Everytime I do this odin freezes on factoryyfs.rfs.... I have tried all the tricks I can find, different usb port, diff cable, running as admin, i even download sandboxie ( someone suggested that)... I dont know if i am doing something wrong, or if it is odin... Also, i'm not rly sure about the software i'm using... I have very little experience with this kind of stuff, but i am really determined to fix this! please forgive my ignorance! TIA!!

Galaxy Ace 2 Normal Guide: Bricked phones, going from JB to GB and so on

I see, that we have nothing normal here, just Q&A with persons, so I decided to do guide if you have soft bricked phone or you want go from JB to GB or other questions.
Question: I somehow bricked my phone
Answer: If you can boot your phone and see bootloop (Samsung and device name), everything is fine. You just need to go to download mode (hold volume down + home button + power about 4-5 seconds), download Odin 3.07 and Russian FirmWare. Flash Russian FirmWare (just CODE_GT-I8160_I8160XXLK6... file) with Odin PDA and your device is alive again.
Question: I have JB, but I want GB back.
Answer: Easy. Download Russian FirmWare, flash with Odin 3.07. Find your wanted GB FirmWare version in SamMobile.com and flash it with Odin 3.07 again. You have GB once again.
Question: I have GB and I want JB. Which version to install?
Answer: It seems ME7 is best version, but you can still try MF1 or any other.
If you have any other questions, please ask and I will help in this thread.

Sorry, I don't have P version and I can't test and tell that. I have regular I8160.
To put it simply, no matter what happen (I mean bootloop, caused by anything), the only solution is to flash that Russian Firmware and Flash the Firmware of your choice (either GB or JB), right?
Many, many thanks for this. After bircking my Ace 2 and trying all kinds of ways of reflashing the stock ROM this is the only thing that worked. So, you've saved my phone - and me some expense.
Now, however, I have a new issue. The Russian version won't update, so I would like to revert to a UK stock ROM with JB 4.2.2. Given my recent epxerience thohgh, I am wary of trying to flash anything again. Any advice on a "safe" way to do this?

Sorry I meant JB 4.1.2 which is the last official version for the Ace 2.
