I updated my samsung infuse to 2.3.6 and now when I get into download mode it says at the top custom download binary:NO and the next line says current binary: samsung official. How can I get it back to normal download mode? I could really use help with this

Hey, good thing for you is that the screen you are describing IS normal download mode. With the 2.3.6 update came an update to the way download mode looks and works. That custom download binary:NO just means that you haven't loaded any custom binaries to the phone (you're on the stock one), and where it says current binary, it lists which version you are on: in this case, official Samsung.
Nothing is wrong, and all is as it should be.
Thanks a million. I was worried for bit. I have an other question that hopefully you can help me out with. I have been trying to use odin and superoneclick since I updated to 2.3.6 and I can't get the phone to work with either odin or superoneclick. It worked fine with both programs before the update. I really wanna root the phone but haven't been able to. Hope you or anyone can help me out.

seems like SOC doesnt work with the official update
and try re installing drivers or using different USB ports on PC before giving up
try each at least 3 times and make sure you are not using a hub or anything
and you have a direct USB connection
Heimdall and Odin get picky sometimes
As jayRokk says, uninstall your Samsung drivers and Kies installation in Control Panel / Programs and Features (or Add Remove Programs). Reinstall Kies to be sure that your drivers are installed correctly (This is for Odin, to get drivers for Heimdall you have to use the zadig program that comes with Heimdall to install a different driver on one specific port.).
Then, you might want to try this Odin package that I put together to make it easy to get stock AT&T Gingerbread with root.:

OK fellas, I have a brand new Captivate. Build is 1102. The phone shipped with 2.2. I bricked the first one so bad I had no choice but to replace it. The second one was almost to that point before I got Odin 3-click to get back to stock 2.1 update 1. Now I'm trying to get back to stock 2.2 and I can't seem to find anything relating on how to do that from my situation. I have literally been up for 38 hours working on this. Took me the first 24 just to get 2.1 on it. I am really stuck here. If anyone has a tool, or a guide, or a hint or a .9mm that can get 2.2 on my phone, please throw me a freaking bone...
Thanks in advance
up for 36 hours isnt going to help.
go get some sleep. come back later.
wait...
you are on your 3rd cappy and still dont know what to do?
Wait so it came with 2.2 you used odin to go to 2.1 and now you wanna go back to where you started?
Ummm ... have you tried kies mini?
When I couldn't use Kies Mini to update my phone from Eclair, I used ODIN 3 (not one click) to upgrade to Froyo - using the image found http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11526718&postcount=1
My build is 1011

Im on my second Captivate. I was actually able to bring it back from brick by building a jig.
@studacris::: It came with 2.2, i flashed a custom rom which was giving me problems, tried flashing back and it failed leaving me with a brick. Built a jig and flashed odin 3-click which put 2.1 on it. I tried to use mini kies but it says my phones firmware is unregistered and will not let me update it...

turn on usb debugging before you connect it to kies
i have not tried the following link but I saved the file just in case I needed it. According to the post that I download the file from, it said its supposed to take you back to JI6:
download here
just be careful because I did not test this file myself
Use the jf6(2.1) odin one click and then there is a file you can use in the odin standalone to get you to kb1(2.2).

Please push *2767*4387264636# or download SGS Tools and select the second option in the Secret Codes section. This will output your product code. If it says anything other than SGH-I897ZKAATT, your product code has probably been tainted, which causes the Kies "unregistered device" error.
The reason this always happened for me is that the product code was changed by the custom ROM. If you do not have a backup of your EFS partition, then correcting this will require a hex editor. I used the method described here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=880223 . Messing around with EFS is inadvisable unless you know perfectly what you are doing. (Trust me on this as Sammy has my first phone for this reason alone.) It wont hurt anything to have an incorrect product code, aside from not being able to update to new software through Kies, but if you mess up anything inside of the file that is edited during the process in the forum link listed above, your radio firmware won't know what its own IMEI is. This can cause your phone to stop functioning as a phone.
The first thing that you should do before flashing any ROM is to backup EFS. There is a method for that here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=859914 . I backed up EFS using every backup method described there (there are two or three I think), then I copied those backups to every thumb drive and storage device I have. I always have restored using the "tarball" method and have used Kies to get back to 2.2 about 20 times without the "unregistered device" issue.
So the most important question is - Do you have a backup of your EFS? (please say yes) If so, then it is just as simple as restoring EFS.
Another possibility if your redneck.nerdishness extends to Linux usage is to use Heimdall for your Froyo upgrade. I used that on my phone when Kies mini was failing on me. Search for Heimdall in the Captivate and standard Galaxy S forums, then follow the instructions to use it with the stock update.zip file linked in the forums.
I'm still new to this rooting and flashing differnet kernals but ive rooted my samsung infuse a while back and everything has been fine..Let a friend use my phone while at work and now all it does is turn on and off..not completey off but white screen to black..pulled up odin and it shows my device connected..it will run through all of odin check list until..setupconnection..initialzation..removed..and fail..can anybody help me out..thanks

First, just to be sure, did you installed the heimdall drivers for the infuse? (They autoinstall with the file on the "driver" folder, but read the instructions you need to be in dl mode) if you got the drivers installed sould be no prob to flash a rom;
Also probably Odin wont be able to flash to you phone if you have Heimdall drivers, you just gotta go into devices and go into samsung usb device and turn to previus driver, if you want to use odin again (at least thats what i do).
Try this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1092021&highlight=stock
or gtgx ones on Odin, they always save my Infuse.
Remember to use a BACK usb port for safety and to be sure the process will be completed.
hmm.. hope i helped.
Please help me with flashing my device. I am new to this matter and I have nowhere to go. I hope that this will help me.
So, my problem is that I want to upgrade their devices to Android 2.3, please tell me step by step how to start and tell a good stable firmware is desirable to support Voodoo.
Had never sewed Android device.
I would really appreciate
Samsung T959V
Android 2.2.1
You don't need to flash anything if you just want to run gb. Connect your phone to samsung kies and it will update your phone to the latest gingerbread.

Indeed. The current stock gingerbread you will get from kies is more stable then anything in this forum.
There are some really cool froyo roms in the dev forum, but even so, if you don't know why you want to flash your phone, stick with stock. If you know why you want to flash your phone, but are looking for resources to help you. Then look no further then the search button at the upper right side of the forum page on your browser. Google also works.

Well, I'm not here to tell you what to do. Just want to give fair warning that even though the roms in this forum are for the SGH-T959V, you can still brick your phone by not paying attention and not reading all of the instructions to the T.
These mods will void your warranty. Luckly there are services out there that will unbrick your phone and jigs that will help to get your phone into download mode.
Download mode is for flashing with Odin or Heimdall. I prefer to show users how to use heimdall, as it is open-source and runs on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.
You can get into download mode three different ways. The first and easiest way is to download and install the Android SDK from http://developer.android.com
After you install it, run 'android' and install the platform-tools.
You should now have a command called 'adb', which has sub commands like: logcat, shell, and reboot. reboot also has options to say to reboot to what. Like
Code:
adb reboot
to just reboot the phone,
Code:
adb reboot recovery
to reboot into recovery, and
Code:
adb reboot download
to reboot into download mode.
The second way is to hold down the volume+ and volume- buttons on the left side of the phone while plugging in your usb cable attached to your computer. After you see the Download Mode screen, let go of the volume buttons.
The third way is a last resort. Use a usb jig.
If you can get into download mode, then you are NOT bricked.
I've also made a Heimdall One-Click that will get you 2.3.6 with ClockWorkMod(aka CWM. This is the SMS KJ6 One-Click on that page) and root. You can also flash the KJ1, which also has cwm and the same KJ6 Stock Rom and root. And last there is the Fully Stock One-Click which will leave you totally stock, and unrooted.
After you have a kernel with CWM installed, you can flash any rom in the dev forum, if it looks like the users of the thread are happy using it. Otherwise, stay away from it, until people say it is safe.
Do not use Rom Manager. It does not work, yet. Hopefully I will fix that very soon.
Anyways. I'm sure others will chime in, but that will get you started... if you want to void your warrenty.

You will get a big kudos from senior members and developers if you search, read, and search some more before posting. It is in the rules in my signature, as well as a bunch of other helpful links.
There was a link to one a while ago but the link is broken now. Can anyone help me get a program for my Mac? My Captivate's version is 2.1 so yeah. Thanks guys!
P.S. If you could help me update it to the latest firmware after 2.1, that would be awesome! I've been trying for so long.
Kies
I believe the most secure way of updating the phone would be through the Samsung Kies software
Kies for Macbook :
HTML:
org.downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/SW/201112/20111209105858172/KiesMac_1.3.0.12062_4_1.dmg
I would suggest that you look into downloading one of the Heimdall-based one-click files here, specifically the one in the "I897UCKH3 Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread" section labeled "With Bootloaders - Link 1 / Link 2 [With CWM Injected Kernel from Boog]". That will flash your phone with the Gingerbread stock rom (the most current Android version officially released for the Captivate), with a kernel that will give your phone root capabilities and ClockworkMod Recovery.
Heimdall works on Mac, unlike Odin.
One quick note - if you do flash that file, MAKE SURE TO BACK UP ALL OF YOUR APPS/PICTURES/MUSIC ETC.. I emphasize that because when you flash the stock rom you'll lose all of your apps, and if something bad were to happen during the flash, there is a chance (albeit a small chance) that you could hard brick your phone. This is because that file flashes bootloaders.
Just makes sure you have a good cable and good connection to your phone and you should be fine.
hey everyone, im new here, just got a Samsung s8+ last week. had it rooted and all working well until today, had problems so i went to reflash twrp and when was unticking auto reboot in odin i accidentally ticked "nand erase"..... and i didnt notice until it was too late.
Now i cant get into recovery mode, i can get to the download mode but it wont flash the twrp at all it keeps failing. all i get is a black screen with samsung logo when i try to start it up. i am downloading factory firmware as i write this and going to see if that'll flash. any help will be appreciated.
thanks in advance, hope this is the right place to post it.
Hey
If you can get to download mode, you just install the original firmware from smartswitch,I think you have that option to recover from that program, and install the original firmware.
Or just do it in Odin and find the firmware on SamM.
Lots of work for you,but thats the only thing I can come up with.
Then you have to root it again and everything with it.

No worry
You just have to install Microsoft visual c++ 2008 x86,after you have done that,no more errors in smartswitch.
Try that,and let us know
Long time since I used Odin now,but try the first thing first

Morning Mate,
Smart Switch (and KIES on Win 10) requires some old stuff to work. Install Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86) from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5582 My advice however would be to try and flash your carriers stock firmware with ODIN or if you want an easier way you can use KIES by doing the following -
- Install C++ 2008 SP1 from link above to get it to work on Windows 10
- Install KIES www.samsung.com/au/support/usefulsoftware/KIES/ - I'm in Australia so that's my closest but you can still get it from there no worries.
- Also select install 'unified driver' during install if you have not already installed Samsung USB drivers to your PC
- Fire up KIES and from the top menu select 'Tools' and from the drop down menu select 'Firmware Upgrade and Initialisation'
- Enter in your model number - for me it's SM-G955F (make sure model is all in CAPS or it will not work). Now it will present you with a S/N dialog box. This is the tricky part if your phone is bricked. Chances are you have not written down your serial number. You can get your serial number from the back of your phone towards the bottom in really small print, or you can get it from the box it came in from purchase if you happened to have kept that.
- Enter in the serial number and follow the instructions, it's easy as. This will install your stock firmware and you can start again. Provided there is no damage to the phone this method will always get you out of the proverbial as a last resort and it's faster than downloading firmware from updato.com or other places.
The fastest way is by using the SamFirm tool to download but it takes some knowledge and I have lost the link to where I got it (the link at XDA is dead now and refers you to updato.com). The method with KIES above will always work, is fairly fast and pretty easy for the newbies or experienced alike.
Hope this helps, let me know if you need any more assistance :good:
Thanks heaps mate, im also in australia too. have installed all the software and is updating and installing as i write this, all seems to be going well so far, thank you so much your a life saver i was starting to worry as wtf i could do with this brick haha i will keep you posted and let you know if i have nay problems. Thanks to everyone else for their help and contribution this forum is awesome. What would you recommend in regards to rooting the phone again use the twrp recovery and magisk-v14.0 root?
thanks again
I was just about to write a post about how it wouldnt work.... twice in a row it kept failing when it went to install and initialize... 3rd time lucky it ****ing worked! i have a stock phone now all working sweet. Thanks so much to everyone you guys are literally lifesavers!
LEGENDS! Happiest man alive right now.
