First, just to be sure, did you installed the heimdall drivers for the infuse? (They autoinstall with the file on the "driver" folder, but read the instructions you need to be in dl mode) if you got the drivers installed sould be no prob to flash a rom;
Also probably Odin wont be able to flash to you phone if you have Heimdall drivers, you just gotta go into devices and go into samsung usb device and turn to previus driver, if you want to use odin again (at least thats what i do).
Try this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1092021&highlight=stock
or gtgx ones on Odin, they always save my Infuse.
Remember to use a BACK usb port for safety and to be sure the process will be completed.
hmm.. hope i helped.

I've been having hours of issues with this damn phone and I'm just short of throwing it in the wall.
After trying for hours by rebooting both computer and phone, installing and reinstalling drivers, trying odin continuously I finally got the phone to update to 2.3.6 Gingerbread from my rooted 2.3.3.
After, I tried rooting the newer 2.3.6 and it seems I took two steps backward. The phone has been stuck with a "Firmware upgrade fail! Try using recovery mode message" for hours now. Odin is stuck at either "Initialization" or "Setup Connection" when I try loading 2.3.6 again.
HELP Please! This thing is driving me nuts.
--Yes I've searched all over for a solution and still didn't find one that worked.
Is odin recognizing your phone?
Yes it's detecting the com port. But keeps stucking after flashing starts. I've tried changing ports and it's the same ****.
If it's deteting the phone you'll be fine. What are you trying to flash. If you want stock I'd use this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1353176
Then you'll need to dl one of these for odin to get root.

wish i was as confident as you mate...screenshot attached.
Yeah its stalled on you. DL the first file I linked you to. Shut down odin. Leave your phone in dl mode. Restart Odin. Follow the OP. Plug phone into odin. Flash. It's possible you have a bad DL and that's what's causing odin to hang.

Will do mate thnx. I'll start again. I've seen reports that people successfully root using drhonk KJ1 so I'll use that once the ROM loads fine.
/sigh
You'll be able to root no problem with one of honks kernels. After that you will have CWM3. You should then DL this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1513287
Then flash it through CWM. That kernel will get you to CWM5 so you'll be able to do nand backups and restores. Let me know how it goes.
Finally got in going mate. I changed the pc then followed your recommendations. Rooted
Now to update to latest CWM.
Yeah odin can be a liitle tempermental at times. Glad you got it. Let me know if you need anything else. Just so you know there are some really good custom ROMs in the dev section if you wanna go that route.
Certainly thanks much. Will take a look at those.
No worries.

Hey, good thing for you is that the screen you are describing IS normal download mode. With the 2.3.6 update came an update to the way download mode looks and works. That custom download binary:NO just means that you haven't loaded any custom binaries to the phone (you're on the stock one), and where it says current binary, it lists which version you are on: in this case, official Samsung.
Nothing is wrong, and all is as it should be.
Thanks a million. I was worried for bit. I have an other question that hopefully you can help me out with. I have been trying to use odin and superoneclick since I updated to 2.3.6 and I can't get the phone to work with either odin or superoneclick. It worked fine with both programs before the update. I really wanna root the phone but haven't been able to. Hope you or anyone can help me out.

seems like SOC doesnt work with the official update
and try re installing drivers or using different USB ports on PC before giving up
try each at least 3 times and make sure you are not using a hub or anything
and you have a direct USB connection
Heimdall and Odin get picky sometimes
As jayRokk says, uninstall your Samsung drivers and Kies installation in Control Panel / Programs and Features (or Add Remove Programs). Reinstall Kies to be sure that your drivers are installed correctly (This is for Odin, to get drivers for Heimdall you have to use the zadig program that comes with Heimdall to install a different driver on one specific port.).
Then, you might want to try this Odin package that I put together to make it easy to get stock AT&T Gingerbread with root.:

Hey everybody. I have a Samsung Captivate with CM7 installed. The other day it started bootlooping and I couldn't get it into recovery mode at all, so I ordered a Jig.
Now the Jig's here and I'm still not sure what I'm doing. I can't get into recovery with the button combos, so I'm kinda stuck. Any suggestions?
I would suggest that you use the jig to get into download mode, then do one of two things:
1. Flash a kernel that works with CM7 from Odin or Heimdall
2. Flash a stock rom from Odin or Heimdall, then reinstall CM7
You may want to try option 1 first, then option 2. If a bad kernel flash caused the issue in the first place, you might be able to save your installed programs & setup instead of having to wipe everything with a stock rom.
I've been trying unsuccessfully for the past couple of hours to flash back to stock. Odin keeps getting hung up on "Get PIT for mapping..." or the sbl.bin step. Maybe I'm doing something wrong or I have the wrong rom.
Anybody have a step-by-step? I'll owe you many thanks.
Otherwise I'll just have to go buy myself a Galaxy Note. Oh no.

And u may need the Nexus drivers since u r on cm7 ??

Two things to try first:
1. Use a Heimdall-based one-click. There's one in my signature (if you were on Gingerbread bootloaders), or you can look in the Stock Rom collection in the Development section. Heimdall uses different drivers and interacts differently with the device.
2. Try a non one-click Odin setup. You'll need to get full Odin and then see if you can find a package to flash from inside of it. Do a little searching in the Development section and you should be able to find these items. Some newer Captivates don't respond well to the one-clicks.
If those don't work, look at the "Connection Issues" thread in my signature for more ideas (4-2ndtwin beat me to it. )
I apologize in advance, since I know people have asked questions similar to this already. But I am desperate for help, as I have been trying to fix my phone for 3 days now, and have not gotten anywhere!!! so here is my story/problem.
I was trying to do an update on my samsung showcase (cspire) using kies, and during the download it was interrupted somehow. The phone was bricked. (i think) so then I found something called one-click unbrick. after that i'm able to put the phone in download or recovery mode.
So i have been trying to get factory rom back on my phone. I downloaded odin3 v1.70 and v1.82 (i have tried both of these) and i have downloaded atlas 2.2 for pit and I have tried both EH09_modem_CS.TAR.MD5 and EI20.tar.md5\EI20.tar.md5. Everytime I do this odin freezes on factoryyfs.rfs.... I have tried all the tricks I can find, different usb port, diff cable, running as admin, i even download sandboxie ( someone suggested that)... I dont know if i am doing something wrong, or if it is odin... Also, i'm not rly sure about the software i'm using... I have very little experience with this kind of stuff, but i am really determined to fix this! please forgive my ignorance! TIA!!
Try flashing a custom rom and boot.img first then Odin back to stock

I've been trying to find one, you don't happen to have a link to where I can find one do you?? Also can i do this using odin, the same way I have been trying to get the stock on there?? Thanks for you help!!
Ok, I know I'm not the first to have this screen pop up because of a failed flash and I did indeed search before asking. I've been searching since late last night and so far I'm stumped. I've installed and reinstalled Samsung Kies to get the official drivers quite a few times so far (because the drivers Heimdall installs don't play well with ODIN) and that gets ODIN to recognize the phone but once I click start after putting in the ROM I am trying to install, it just sits saying "SetupConnection" for as long as I choose to let it sit there. If I try Heimdall, it changes drivers to one that is usable and then fails to get a response at handshake with Loke. I've never had this happen before. I was coming from ParanoidAndroid trying to unroot the phone to sell and now I'm here. Any ideas?
That is an alternate download mode that shows after a failed firmware update. Use Heimdall and one click back to stock.
You will probably need to uninstall any drivers installed by Odin in order for heimdall to work.

I'm aware of that. I know what the screen means. I only mentioned it as a point of reference. My point was that after getting that screen, everything I have tried to flash has failed. That's one of the ways I attempted. Any heimdall does the same thing, though. It fails at handshake with Loke. Being that there is no log, I am not entirely sure what is causing ODIN to fail but 2 different roms have had the same effect. Thanks for the response. By the way, I'm sorry if I seem snappish, I didn't mean to be. Just been a long aggravating night.
Heimdall One-Click. Not Heimdall. Use the second link in my signature. Read the notes and you will learn you can install Heimdal One-Click drivers for one usb port and Samsung drivers one a different usb port without confict.
I found the one click unbrick which worked like a charm. Going to attemp to get this thing back to stock again. Thanks for your help.
Oh, and by the way, this is the heimdall I was using. One click and stock KJ6. I've never tried actual heimdall. Didn't honestly know that there was a heimdall standalone version. By the time I started messing with this phone, all the one click stuff was already made. Made it a lot easier than the old days of rooting the G1, so I never looked for anything else til now. No point in making a job harder.
