OK fellas, I have a brand new Captivate. Build is 1102. The phone shipped with 2.2. I bricked the first one so bad I had no choice but to replace it. The second one was almost to that point before I got Odin 3-click to get back to stock 2.1 update 1. Now I'm trying to get back to stock 2.2 and I can't seem to find anything relating on how to do that from my situation. I have literally been up for 38 hours working on this. Took me the first 24 just to get 2.1 on it. I am really stuck here. If anyone has a tool, or a guide, or a hint or a .9mm that can get 2.2 on my phone, please throw me a freaking bone...
Thanks in advance
up for 36 hours isnt going to help.
go get some sleep. come back later.
wait...
you are on your 3rd cappy and still dont know what to do?
Wait so it came with 2.2 you used odin to go to 2.1 and now you wanna go back to where you started?
Ummm ... have you tried kies mini?
When I couldn't use Kies Mini to update my phone from Eclair, I used ODIN 3 (not one click) to upgrade to Froyo - using the image found http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11526718&postcount=1
My build is 1011

Im on my second Captivate. I was actually able to bring it back from brick by building a jig.
@studacris::: It came with 2.2, i flashed a custom rom which was giving me problems, tried flashing back and it failed leaving me with a brick. Built a jig and flashed odin 3-click which put 2.1 on it. I tried to use mini kies but it says my phones firmware is unregistered and will not let me update it...

turn on usb debugging before you connect it to kies
i have not tried the following link but I saved the file just in case I needed it. According to the post that I download the file from, it said its supposed to take you back to JI6:
download here
just be careful because I did not test this file myself
Use the jf6(2.1) odin one click and then there is a file you can use in the odin standalone to get you to kb1(2.2).

Please push *2767*4387264636# or download SGS Tools and select the second option in the Secret Codes section. This will output your product code. If it says anything other than SGH-I897ZKAATT, your product code has probably been tainted, which causes the Kies "unregistered device" error.
The reason this always happened for me is that the product code was changed by the custom ROM. If you do not have a backup of your EFS partition, then correcting this will require a hex editor. I used the method described here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=880223 . Messing around with EFS is inadvisable unless you know perfectly what you are doing. (Trust me on this as Sammy has my first phone for this reason alone.) It wont hurt anything to have an incorrect product code, aside from not being able to update to new software through Kies, but if you mess up anything inside of the file that is edited during the process in the forum link listed above, your radio firmware won't know what its own IMEI is. This can cause your phone to stop functioning as a phone.
The first thing that you should do before flashing any ROM is to backup EFS. There is a method for that here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=859914 . I backed up EFS using every backup method described there (there are two or three I think), then I copied those backups to every thumb drive and storage device I have. I always have restored using the "tarball" method and have used Kies to get back to 2.2 about 20 times without the "unregistered device" issue.
So the most important question is - Do you have a backup of your EFS? (please say yes) If so, then it is just as simple as restoring EFS.
Another possibility if your redneck.nerdishness extends to Linux usage is to use Heimdall for your Froyo upgrade. I used that on my phone when Kies mini was failing on me. Search for Heimdall in the Captivate and standard Galaxy S forums, then follow the instructions to use it with the stock update.zip file linked in the forums.

I have a Samsung Captivate, and installed froyo 2.2 not knowing such stuff like rooting and roms and after that i installed this so called gingerbread.
I want to remove it now and i just want to stick to froyo cognition but i cant seem to get rid of it. I could use all the help id theres anyone out there has been in the same situation as me.
thank you in advance
You can use the Odin 1-click utility found somewhere on these forums (stickied either at the top of the general forums or development forums) to revert your Captivate to stock, and then flash the most recent Cognition from there.
EDIT: Here's the Odin 1-click utility: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
Note that using Odin will revert you COMPLETELY TO STOCK, including the wipe of all of your files on the phone, contacts (unless saved to sim), etc, etc. There are probably other ways to do it, but Odin is fool-proof and surefire.

The solution that I linked above should work to restore your phone completely to stock; if you've done that and it hasn't worked, I'm out of my league.
i appreciate the fast reply but isnt this ODIN 3, even though i know you said ODIN1??? Im just confuse
Thanks snapple fish i actually checked it and it does show the earlier build on this ODIN. i appreciate your HELP
This is my first android device (samsung galaxy s 4g sgh-t959v). I am already rooted thanks to superoneclick and confirmation via rootchecker great apps by the way great for noobs like me. My question is can I get the low down on th deodexed kc1 custom kernel and flashing to my phone also doing a nand backup on the phone. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also have rom manager and busybox installed, however I have not flashed clockworkmod recovery as read not to do so on another post, says it wasnt suported yet. Again thanks in advance.
The kc1 is actually an update that is available through kies mini now. They are trying to get a deodexed version of the "official" update.
It fixes some bugs you may have noticed. - message failed to send, lock ups, reboots, etc...
As far as flashing goes I would start here.

KC1 isn't on the update on Kies Mini. The update is KD1 which is newer and fixes the MMS and other small bugs that KC1 still had.
Checked out the link and wanted say thanks. it will be very usefull to get up to speed with this device for when the good stuff rolls out. Also one more thing reading the other post I dont think it mentioned doing nand backup. Other than that im good just wanna know ill be able fix it in case I really screw up messing around. Also awsome response time on the post and thanks again.

My bad, got'em mixed up.
You should go and read the CWM beta thread on the Development section. There is a CWM beta version out that lets you do a backup of the phone. However, I don't think the full restore option is working quite yet. I think the best you can do is to restore your data and cache, even though you can do a full backup. You will have to wait for the final version of CWM to come out to do the full restore from any full backups that you created.
Thanks for the heads up on that. I will be patient and wait cause im new to android and want to do it all right the first time. Hacked a couple psp's but this seems to be more risky cause for psp you just needed the right memory card and modified battery. Thanks again and I will keep my eyes open in the forums for a way to fully backup and restore.
I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO USE THE 3ERECOERY installer so i can backup restor flash zip i go aqnd it prompts me when open i down graded my root to shell root and it said could not find directed path i dont know what im doing wrong does it have to be done through odin i use winrar to extract can some ;one please give me a heads up

this stock 3e is useless please help i use short fuse and it said cant find directed path shell root not recognized any ideas i unrooted to return to stock to give it back to t mobile and it gets stuck ay waiting for device i dont know if its a bad cable or what now i cant even get it to root agin i always check the drivers box in short fuse psneuter it says drivers are fine any ideas???? STUCK AT WAITING FIR DEVICE????
Heres the dealio- I have a Charge I want to root and put a custom rom on. I have done this before, with my Inc and my Archos tablet so I'm not a complete idiot.
I did use Odin and thought everything went fine, followed directions to install a zip from the card but the recovery menu never gave me that option. I am unable to get to the sdcard from the recovery menu. I got the option to install the update.zip but thats all. (I followed one of the many thousand "how to root your charge" threads)
Can someone tell me what happened?
Also, the first time I tried to do it, I realized I didn't have the right file, so I pulled the plug on my Charge while in Odin, also because it kept looping. Now Windows XP on that machine won't recognize the phone anymore.
Anyone have any ideas on that?
One more, I read that you need to downgrade the EE4 in order to root? Is that why recovery didn't work the first time, because I have the EE4? (I did see that info AFTER I installed the recovery)
I've been over these threads hundreds of times but I just don't have alot of time and there is alot of redundant information that makes it hard to get anywhere so I'd appreciate if someone could help me out.

1) don't choose the option to select 'update.zip', that option doesn't work on the Charge... also it sounds like you were in the stock recover, you do flashing/wiping in ClockWorkMod recovery (CWM)
2) NEVER pull the cord out during an Odin flash unless its been like 30+ minutes and it looks like it froze or nothings happening, this is probably why your phone can't be recognized now (that is a good way to brick your phone and it sounds like you've got one)... now you will need to get the phone into download mode (if it still will) and flash the stock EE4 rom with the Charge PIT file (can't link from phone but these are in the How To Fix Your Phone sticky in Development) and start over
3) I don't quite understand your last question but no you don't need to be on EE4 to root and you can put CWM on any rom with Odin, EE4 at this point is mostly a 'return to stock' rom

The phone seems to be working fine, but maybe that is why I was in stock recovery mode, because it looks fine, but won't download now. Because I just tried to install a rom and I get an error. I had tried to install CWM, and thought thats what I was going to when I ended up in the stock recovery. I will try the Charge PIT file that you mentioned and see if that fixes anything, and then start over from there. If not I may be returning the phone since it's fairly new.
Thanks for your time

I don't have a PIT option on my Odin, or a repartition. It's version 4.13...is there a better version of Odin to work with and stick with? I'm working with 3 different computers here, so I know I have an Odin at home that was working but this one doesn't seem to connect. It's easier to troubleshoot whats going wrong if the proggies I'm using are at least a consistent version number. I DO know I had PIT on the Odin at home but version I'm using (at work) doesn't have it.

Thanks for the help guys. I got everything back to normal. Drivers and sdcard working properly now. Rooted. Now I just need to get Clockwork back on, and a different rom. Anyone have any fav roms so far? Would love some input on what everyone sees with the different radio builds.
If anyone can answer this, can we get mobile hotspot working on this? Thats a big part of why I need to root and rom this thing.

Everyone will have an opinion on ROM's and radios. My setup is in my sig. As for hotspot, android-wifi-tether works fine on all rooted roms. I've found 3.0pre12 to work the best. 3.1beta6 requires a reboot to get wifi working normally after tethering, but I don't have that issue on 3.0pre12. Be sure to immediately reboot after you install it, and then go in and set your phone type to Samsung Fascinate, and you should be good to go.
Okay... Long story short, I have an Infuse, which I flashed with the Gingerbread 2.3.5 leak using Odin this weekend (It was rooted and all was well before) I couldn't get my email to work correctlry, so like I dumb-a** I continued monkeying with it until I bricked it. (Insert laughter here)
After an hour or two, I was finally able to get it back into download mode and used GTG's Ultimate Unbrick to help my phone back to life. Link here for whoever needs it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116251
When it was all said and done, the phone was a F/W version 2.2.1 BB ver. I997UCKD5 kernel 2.6.32.9 FROYO.UCKD5 build. (At least it sort of worked. Most apps fail and cause a force quit prompt. Google Talk authentication fails and I cannot reliably download any apps from the market)
I had a heck of a time getting it to root, but was able to do so. SU installed and binary updated to 3.0. I load up root explorer and go to /system/bin to replace the recovery file and have have hit a snag that I just can't get past. I changed the directory permissions to R/W and can rename the file, but every time I do so, if I leave the directory to copy the replacement recovery file, the file reverts back to it's original name. I have also tried just simply deleting it, which shows a confirmation message that it has been deleted, but when I go out of the directory and back in, it's there again. I have also just tried overwriting it or changing the file permissions to no avail. I'm totally perplexed.
I have tried using Odin to re-flash the Gingerbread, the Stock ROM, and the "unbrick" files again, just to get me to a different point, but they all fail in the partitioning phase or partially through the FS check.
Any thoughts? (I've been at this for a few days now and am ready to just start fresh with a new infuse, keeping this one as a test unit. LOL)
I'm looking spcifically for help getting this phone into the modified 3e recovery mode, so I can load new roms from the phone, or maybe a different ROM that I can load with Odin to make it work properly again...
Thank you very much in advance.

Odin id notoriously unreliable. Especially on the infuse. Use heimdall to unbrick. Adam outlet posted a one click heimdall but locked the thread because it had issues on windows XP. But I would get the full version of heimdall and use it to flash the community kernel. voodoo kernels will root you on first boot as well as have cwm baked in. why people are still rooting and using green cwm after pushing a modded recovery file I'll never understand.
After Odin did you factory reset from the settings? If not yeah you'll get gtalk authentication fail (happened to me many times before ) , if you haven't done it I would suggest before you root / using different Rom on your phone, you should considered doing it.

A BIG thanks goes out to both of you! no, I had not done a factory reset. once I did so all the apps started working again.
also I verified my busybox version and found out I was a couple behind thanks for that hint.
it also turned out that my root explorer needed to be updated as well. Once I got everything working it took the 3e recovery without a hitch.
thanks again for your reply!

Also, before editing anything in /system/, you need to remount the whole partition r/w.

Hi,
folow problem:
i made the upgrade from 2.2 to 2.3 and found out that there are some apps, language (German), try to downgrade to 2.2 since this was done (for 3Weeks) i can not use the phone because it shows AT&T when i push the power button, when i plug in the usb it shows just the charging symbol. Itry the 3 button reset nothing changed.
Yesterday i spend the hall day to find out is this a waranty case or not ?
Futureshop where i boughtthe phone said as long the phone is not running or show the ROGERS screen they can do nothing ???!!! Costumersupport - no comment.
At Rogers plus they said they have to send it in because its on a Rogers contract.
I tried the reset method with the Roger customer service the same result nothing changed. Just the AT&T screen.
My question is what else can i do to get the phone back so that it works befor i did this update.
I don`t no what downgrate it was, the only thing i know it was the update from samsung kies.
Have u any solutions ?

Sounds like you have a soft-brick. You have to either buy a jig ( Which you can find here: http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/samsung-galaxy-s-download-mode-jig/ ) Or follow this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=889128 Use either one of these to get into download mode, and flash back to stock with odin.
try using JIG to get it into download mode and do a reset with ODIN

This is not a soft brick............don't panic. This is a kernel mismatch or bootloader problem. DON"T USE KIES FOR ANYTHING...except if you really want to brick you phone. I hate that program (my personal opinnion!!).
Have you tried the button combos to go to download?
see this link for some http://samsungcaptivate.wikia.com/wiki/Putting_the_Phone_into_Download_Mode
or google "Captivate Download Mode".
CHECK YOUR USB DRIVER VERSION. http://www.capfaq.com/w/USB_drivers Use the link to Samsung (click on "Software" blue link on top).....works best with Win XP, WIn Vista. You can also use 32-bit or 64-bit driver but see next comment IF YOU ARE ON WIN 7.
ALSO, DONT USE WINDOWS 7 64-bit, unless you have to. My opinion again............but a lot of experience behind it. The USB drivers are for 32-bit and is in my opinion flaky. If you can use Win XP then great, otherwise go with Win 7 32-bit. Even Win Vista is good.
THEN USE ODIN.
YOU HAVE TO FLASH THE STOCK 2.1 I897UCJF6 from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300843. The work upwards to 2.3. It is better to flash JF6 since I do not know what bootloaders are there on you phone.
.........if you can get download, then post back if you do not know how to get stock. There is always a chance of bricking your phone during flashing, but it is slim.

I must disagree with your recommendation for jf6. I would recommend KB1 or KB2. They are both available in the development section.

Agreed. But his 'case hsitory' is murky. In fact, I actually first posted KB1 then changed to JF6, since though he says 2.2 who knows what state his phone's in. He may also be stuck somehwere in between on 2.3, where GB bootloaders may or may not be on. JF6 without bootloaders would be safest.
At this point, it looks as if he should start over. Completely start over. With bootloaders. Yes I know the danger involved in flashing bootloaders, but in this state it may be the only choice. Attempting to use jf6 w/out bootloaders could result in another boot loop. Their is the option of using Heimdall to flash kb1, taking out the bootloaders before flashing.
