Origami cover for Prime - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm not sure if this actually has magnets to hold it in place (I sure hope so), but it looks pretty cool nonetheless:

I admit that I was a bit excited and should have at least posted in the accessories forum. However, I think that there's a great deal of interest in the Prime (of course), and I thought this cover was unique and innovate enough to point out. It demonstrates how much thought ASUS seems to be putting into the Prime, which is a real positive.

I have been playing with this same concept for the TF101. I would love to get my hands on one of these to see how they are attaching it to the base.
I really want a VERY light weight cover just to protect the glass and give it a stand for our TF101, this might get the ball rolling for us to get something like it.

If I had to guess, there are tabs that slip into the slots where the docking station latches fit.

Amazing idea! Ideal solution. Why the hell aren't they doing that? Hell just a spring loaded rod with 2 hooks.
G2x - 2.3.7 CM7
Transformer - 3.2 Revolver OC/UV

The latch should be very similar on the prime as it is on the TF101, except for the depth of the distance from latch to screen.
Would be nice to modify to fit ours, or better yet, make one specifically for it.

I hope it doesn't have magnets. It's a pointless gimmick that only Apple would come up with. To save yourself a couple of seconds fitting a tab or two or pressing a power button, you now have a case that can accidentally wipe your credit card or damage an old-school CRT TV / monitor if you hold it too close. Niiice.

Well, with this kind of cover, I'm not sure how it would function without a magnet. There's nothing to secure it to...

The magnet would have to be decently strong too, to wipe off your credit card magnetic stripe (or you put there for a long time or something).

I've seen multiple reports of even just the iPad itself wiping credit cards and hotel room keys. The cover contains twice as many magnets as the iPad does...

The less of them, the better. I'd prefer a physical switch in the TF dock, too.
There are a hell of a lot more than one in the iPad 2 and Smart Cover, though. The iFixit teardown shows ten magnets in the iPad 2 body (four small ones in one side of the rear panel, four small and two large ones in the left side), and no less than 21 in the "Smart" Cover (two big, 18 small, and one tiny).
That's 31 magnets in an iPad 2 with cover, of which there are four large magnets, 26 small ones, and one tiny one.

[Q] Wobbly Dock? Is this normal?

I've googled and googled to no luck (including searching this forum), so I apologize if this has been answered.
My dock works. It works wonderfully. My only complaint is how loose it feels. When it snaps in (with 2 "click" sounds), it sits flat and works just fine. However, when I open or close the tablet, there is a lot of "give". In other words, it rocks forward and backward quite a bit, giving the impression that it is loose. Is this normal? Let me know your thoughts, and thanks in advance for your input!
The docking connection isn't very good IMHO. Sometimes it can be better to hit Home and then undock/redock, the locking slider thing also tends to be lose.
How much becomes abnormal, idk.

there is a little play in my dock but i wouldnt call it "loose" by any means. video maybe? or just call up asus. people have been posting horror stories but my RMA experience was quite pleasant.
mine does have some play in it also, it seems as if you have to really push it home and make sure the lock is all the way over. i did e-mail asus about it and waiting for a reply, will keep you updated as soon as i hear from them.
I've worked with a couple dozen docks. My take is about 20-30% of them are loose. The rest are tight and very sturdy.
Here's what you can do. Put 2 layers of electrical tape in the back and 1 layer of electrical tape in the front inside the holder part of the dock. Try to use your imagination. Don't make me have to post pictures. I hate it when I have to post pictures of the bleeding obvious.

Haha don't worry. I'd like to believe I'm tech savvy enough to know how to use tape Thanks for the advice! I think this might be a good way to go about it.
And thanks everyone for their input!
Stop it..
One great thing abut the Prime, they seem to have noticed that making a tighter clamp, a smoother surface, and a proper spring loaded lock-slider saves on buying a roll of tape .

TF700T Screen hinge tightness

Hello,
I just got my Transformer Infinity TF700T. I tested it over an hour and am frankly quite happy with it, except one minor issue.
The hinge near the lower left corner is not tight, i can easily press it down a bit. It did pop up a little. There's no gap between the silver back cover and the front screen, it's just the back cover which doesn't firmly attach to the main body i believe.
Can other TF700T owners verify this issue ? Is it a manufacturer's defect ?
Thank you.
I'm a little bit confused by your post.. Are you referring to the hinge with the dock or just the corner of the tablet itself?
I have no gaps or "pops" when I press around the edges of my tablet. Maybe if you take a picture or give some more details I can confirm again for you if I have, or not, experienced the same.
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF700T using xda app-developers app
My TF700 is pretty snug in the hinge that makes the screen able to 'clamshell' with the dock. There is a little leeway in pulling and jerking, but not too much, so I'd call it secure. Since it has to be nice to the connecting sockets as well, I do not know if a a really tight connection could be feasible; I'd imagine you'd need a least a minimal amount of wiggle room.
I just checked my own. I see what you mean. Im able to press the screen down 1mm right around that spot. The rest of the frame is solid.
Would be nice if more people checked this spot and posted results.
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF700T using Tapatalk 2
Well, mine is as tight on the left as on the right -- I really can't spot any difference. There's less leeway than I originally thought (I didn't have the dock with me at that particular moment, so I posted off of memory). It's pretty tight. Does the locking mechanism go all the way to the right for you?
I don't have a dock yet.

Same thing here all around the edge press it down and kinda float up and down meaning it is not firmly attached and it has been on a not stable mount or uneven surface.
Glue?
Interesting because I noticed it as soon as I opened the package.
What's with the QC of the products..

The 'hinge' i refered to was between the back (gray/gold) cover and the screen. I can press the screen down a little bit at the edge of the tablet.
I believe at least 3 other owners have reported the same issue, particularly in the same place as well.

You can actually call something that hold itself together in a loosely fashion as a "Hinge".
Which is exactly what the title of this post referring to.
I can also confirm this issue. Just got mine yesterday. I uploaded a pic of where I have to press down, just above the microHDMI port. Would be interesting to know if ASUS sees this as manufacturing defect.
Cheers,
Rich
Hmmm... At first I only had this problem down in the left corner by the docking hinge. Now I suddenly have it all along the bottom. Anyone else seen a difference over time?

You have to read the Transformer Prime area if you want to learn more about QC and Asus products. I don't think their QC line has changed at all coming from the Prime. Probably the same people.
I have this tablet for 3 weeks now and today I noticed the problem described in this topic.
I'll wait with a RMA or anything because I'm not sure if the replacement will fix this and if it will be back before my holiday. Let's hope it won't get worse.

Smart cover? Edit: TranSleeve?

Has anyone purchased a smart cover for their Infinity? Like something comparable to an iPad smart cover? I'd prefer something like that over a keyboard dock or sleeve type protection. Curious what's out there. Looks like Asus made some for older models but they are reviewed unfavorably.

There is the official smart cover by Asus called TranSleeve.
But there is a report here somewhere it doesn't fit well and you have to tweak it a little too have it perfectly fit.

I don't think there is a smartcover for infinity, and i am afraid there never will be!
You see, smart cover means that when you "open" it, the screen turns on (iPad, Nexus7), becuase there is a magnet in the chasis of the pad that makes that possible. Haven't tried applying a magnet on infinity, but i don't think there is one...
So, sorry about that. transsleeve maybe looks like smart cover, but it is pretty stupid if you ask me
TranSleeve is what I'm looking for. Just light protection for the screen when I set it down and a stand when in use. Has anyone tried it with the TF700? The reviews are mixed from TF201 users, some love it some don't.
Also, anyone try waiving a magnet around this thing yet? If they eventually came out with one that could trigger the screen like an iPad that would be ideal.

I'm thinking the same. But I'd like to get a cover for while at home. I'm going to get real sleeve to carry all of it when I leave the house so I can put it in my backpack without worrying about it getting messed up. I'd love a sleeve with 3DO in it but no one makes those.
I got the Transleeve Dual yesterday and to be honest I don't like it at all. It feels nice in the hand but that is just about the only compliment I can give it.
The case just ruins the elegance of the tablet which I find surprising since it is an Asus product.

dropped my baby

I had my tf700 in the dock on my lap. Being top heavy, it fell backwards off of my lap. A 2 foot fall on to a concrete floor killed it. It seemed to fall in slow motion as i screamed "nooooooo." Screen went dead, now it wont turn on at all. So off to Best Buy i go to use my warranty. Its gonna be a long week waiting.
Ohh. Not good. Hope you get your replacement.
(but if not, I hope for a video of the dissection)
I think all of us would prefer if Asus installed a battery in the dock large enough to make the dock twice as heavy as the tablet to prevent things like this happening. A little more weight for extra security and battery life? What's not to love?
warranty? not sure that would work my friend. it's not a general insurance policy, it's valid in case the tablet has problems NOT caused by the user...

Another angle is to add surface area to the base behind the hinge. A slide-out stabilizer is tough given way the hinge juts below the bottom of the keyboard, but a flip-out stabilizer is still possible while retaining the ultra-book appearance of the device. And I'd love to have that option. A bigger battery would be nice too though.

I'm thinking of gluing a thin sheet of metal or a flattened wire to the from lower front edge of the keyboard. It will have to be smooth and probably less than 1mm thick. At the moment I'm just thinking about different alternatives and how they might afflict the aesthetics of the unit.

TF201/700 Dock Feet

So I've got to say that every aspect of having the dock for my TF700 Infinity is absolutely outstanding. Though I have had one issue that is seeming to become worse.
The "feet" on the dock have started to come off. So far I have lost two of them, without a clue as to where they have gone. I called ASUS, and they said that if I were lucky they might have them for sale on there site, which they don't. They also said that these missing feet would not be covered under warranty if I were to even go through the hassle of sending it back to them.
So this brings the question. Does anyone know where I can either get replacement feet, or what I might be able to fabricate new feet out of? I wouldn't normally care about the feet, except that they do a wonderful job of keeping the tablet and dock from sliding around on my desk. I honestly wouldn't even mind adding a mm or two to the back feet so that they could do a better job of that while the tablet/dock are opened.
Any suggestions on a rubber type material, or other such material, that I could use to create some new feet? I'd be willing to make them for the community also if I could just find the right material. I am sure that I'm not the only one being plauged by this issue, maybe it's just bothering me more than most.
-FInire
Try on ebay - I've replaced the rubber feet on one of our laptops - there was a huge choice and managed to fine ones better than the originals.
Although not sure you'll get a colour match, I'm sure the sizes will be available in a number of heights.
Try a decoration or furniture store, they usually sell rubber non-slip anti-scratch stickers for under decorative items. They work rather well under the dock, too.

Dude, i have the answer!!! ............i have found the feet that are perfect nearly 99.5% the same as the originals. I just need to find the ebay sellers name from my emails, as the auction i bought from has been archived. I will post back later tonight with the answer
If you have a friend or you yourself owns a Hot glue gun then you can just put a tiny dolop of hot glue where the feet used to be. It should stay for a long while and they are just as good as a silicone nub or foot for these products. my wife has one of these thats the only reason why it came up. Otherwise i would go to Home Depot, by me they have a huge selection of these kinds of things for furniture.

If you have a friend or you yourself owns a Hot glue gun then you can just put a tiny dolop of hot glue where the feet used to be. It should stay for a long while and they are just as good as a silicone nub or foot for these products. my wife has one of these thats the only reason why it came up. I've got one myself actually. I'm just hesitant about doing something possibly so permanent. Also, I know if I can't get it just right, flat and all... It's really going to bug the crap out of me too... Not saying it's a bad idea, it's a great one... I'm just finding that I have to weigh it against my ocd...
The hot glue gun sounds like a great idea. I'll be trying that later today on my wife's laptop.

If you can post pictures after you've gotten it done I'd love to see how it turns out.
a small dab of RTV Silicone works well too. I've been doing that on my laptops for years.
I gave up... I used hot-glue... It works perfectly! And it's easily removable if need be. The only difficult part is getting it shaped correctly.
Hot glue works. I've used Sugru on my laptop feet. Love that stuff...

Found these online. Seem like they would probably work:

Those look quite nice. I'm going to order them, and hope that they stick on over my Skinomi. If not, I'll get the exacto blade out and carve them up to the right size.
I've had to replace my superglue feet twice so far, as they keep coming off.
