I was going to upgrade to a SGSII until I just heard these two are coming out in the next couple weeks.
Issue with SGSII is now the user base and Devs will be split between these two devices. Add to that, it's still unclear if the phone will be on Exynos or Snapdragon - which could affect the Rom base.
The Vivid however looks like a really nice phone as well. Just unsure how many Devs will be jumping on that. Add to that it's a qHD screen (although probably not close to the SAMOLED+ in terms of colors and blacks).
Decisions...
But 4.5inch on a 800x480 doesn't seem to great. The qHD is quite better for a 4.5inch.

The GS2LTE is a 1.2GHz clocked CPU; therefore, it is an Exynos and not the 1.5GHz Snapdragon present in the TMobile version.
The Vivid, being the only AT&T HTC device (and since it's a newer HTC device, hopefully stock unlocked bootloaders), should have a decent following both in general userbase and in development. I get the feeling that the only reason why people gravitated to the Captivate is due to the fact that it was AT&T's only reasonable Android device at the time.
I've just been so frustrated with Samsung's stock experience on the Captivate and all the problems that this phone has been giving me, unlike my friend's rooted and near-stock Inspire 4G, that I will never consider buying a Samsung Android device again. I don't care how good it looks on paper; the Captivate did not really work in practice until developers got their hands dirty and fixed it for the rest of us.
HTC.......
the SGS2 is great, but HTC always gets the latest and greatest and the most dev support....

As much as I'm getting frustrated with my Cappy, I think I'm going to wait it out and see what other XDA members say about both of them before buying. Also, I want to see something official from the manufacturers and ATT on whether or not these are getting ICS.
I don't know about this (just thinking out loud here), but could the resolutions change after an ICS update? If it's possible, it would be worth waiting to see what happens after (if) they get an ICS update.
I really want to trust the specs from Samsung but after the GPS issues, the reboot issues, the poor camera quality, the lack of release updates (be it ATT or Samsung) - it's going to be tough to woo me back to another Samsung phone. I know I have a 1GHz phone with good hardware in my hands but my senses always feel like my wife's Nexus1 runs smoother and better on older hardware.
If Samsung (and all phone manufacturers for this matter) actually cared about the customer there would be one form factor across all wireless providers to help encourage innovative accessories and to help reduce the cost of accessories for the customer. Ok, now I'm ranting on a tangent. Time to stop.
The SGS2 i777 already has a good Dev base and continuing to grow already. The sgs2 i777 has in common with the i9100 as we that have/had cappys should know the i897 cappy and i9000 were like sisters and is HOW we had so much Dev support. Most the devs that I have seen already are stating that they are staying with the i777 and NOT moving to the i727 skyrocket.
There are already a few post over in the ATT SGS2 General forums debating this so you can catch up on it beforehand.
Basically it is an ALMOST FOR SURE thing that it is NOT the 1.5Ghz Exerynos chip in it since Samsung stated that ONLY test chips were ready by the end of this year and should make it into phones by the middle of 2012.
The screen is .2" larger but with the SAME 800x480 resolution.
It is Lte which is the ONLY GOOD THING I see in it unless you live in an Lte area now and don't stray out.of that area. The Lte coverage will ONLY BE 12 markets by the end.of the year and will take a few years to spread it out better.
Back to the Dev support, if you look into the tmobile section of xda you will see how slow the Dev support is there and how they have like 1 base kernel that is not tweaked much at all. The Dev base is not too good compared to the Dev base of the i777.
The reason I mention the T-Mobile version is it sounds like MOSTLY it is the same phone with the same chipsets just with a different Lte radio.
I came from/still have 2 of 3 of my cappys, went to the sgs2 i777 on Oct. 4th and Lte will be in my area by the end of the year. I am within the timeframe to return the sgs2 now but wont be doing it due to the Dev base and the similarities with it and the i9100. Which as we know the i9000 got all the updates and goodies which were pretty easily ported over to out captivates since they were similiar. The SAME is/will be true with the i777 and i9100. The i727 doesn't have a sister unbranded phone to port from so will likely be at the mercy of ATT for future software updates. The i777 should get ICS shortly after the i9100 well before att decides to give us ICS on either phone. So to make a long story short I am choosing because.of the Dev support and compatibility of phones already out there. The i727 will be a 1fer phone, one of a kind for the most part. Not wanting to start a i777/i727 flaming war here as each person will have their own ideas about it. That is how.it has already turned into in most of the post about this subject over there. Just giving my thoughts and feelings here.
Plus I have always qualified for an upgrade.on my line every 12 months as I did this time. So 12 months.from now Lte may be in a better spotlight with coverage, the sgs3 should be making its way by that time. The i777 sgs2 kicks ass for sure and I have not had any of the little learning issues/bad flashes/ test software as when I started out with my cappy last year in July. It just works without any of the hiccups. We had actual roms on LAUNCH DAY due to being SO CLOSE to the i9100...

I guess it's true and I thought this before. If going for a SGSII, no point not getting the original - especially since soon ports of the International SGSII will be coming around and the Skyrocket might have different HW.
But the HTC is tempting as they usually make really nice phones - and there might be a good amount of Devs and people in general jumping on it after the Inspire.
Looks like the SGS2LTE has the Exynos 4212 just from comparing hardware specs. The 1.2Ghz version in the regular SGS2 the Exynos 4210. Throw "Exynos 4212" into google search and you'll see some impressive specs. It is supposed to have 30% better power use and 5 times more powerful graphics performance. I'm not an expert, but this is just what I think is under the hood.

Once the chipset is officially confirmed exyons vs qualcomm that will be the deciding factor in ROM porting. If the skyrocket has the qualcomm chip, there will be no i9100 ports. The only chance of ports will be the TMo version, which should have very little likelyhood of being any better than the ATT version.
There is a lot of circumstancial evidence pointing to the qualcomm chip, check out the several large threads in the i777 Galaxy S II forum. Most devs chimed in and have said the i777 will be the only us version capable of getting ROM ports from the I9100, because they are so close.
There is no proof yet the Vivid will have an unlocked bootloader when shipped.
If you enjoy flashing ROMs, or want the most selection in ROMs, the i777 OG GS II will likely be your best bet.

Ah, first world troubles. I seriously doubt either phone will disappoint in any showstopping way, with or without a substantial amount of developer support.
Currently I have a Galaxy S II Epic 4g touch on sprint. I will be leaving sprint for multiple reason and going to AT&T to get the HTC Vivid. In my opinion samsung makes better phones but HTC gives you a much better user experience. Here are some pro's and cons of samsung and htc (my opinions are based on my current phone the gs2 and my previous phone the evo)
Samsung beats HTC at:
Screen is better
Camera is better
CPU is faster
Sound on speaker is louder and more clear
HTC beats Samsung at:
Way better widgets
Screen is more sensitive
GPS actually works (gps on samsung phones are always pure failure)
Higher quality plastic
please dont get mad if you disagree this is just my opinion. I will be getting the white vivid and will never get a non htc phone again.
The normal SGS II is better than the Skyrocket. FYI.
The one real downer to the SGS II LTE that would probably stop me from getting it is the resolution is 480 x 800 pixels @ 4.5 inches = 207ppi pixel density?? REALLY?! I think the G1 had better than that
So the HTC vivid and the SGS2 Lte both have worse processors that the OG SGS2? One with 1.2 snapdragon and the other with 1.5 qualcomm?

Only downside now w/ the Vivid, is that it is plastic and not the usual aluminum unibody construction. One of the things that always separated HTC from Samsung IMO
Noob question: I don't know much about the new phones coming out but wouldn't the new nexus that's coming out be a greater or just as good choice. Just wondering because I always thought the nexus s had the most dev support and updates since it was a google phone.

It will, but not everyone is willing to fork over money off-contract; I've heard that they're changing it to allow multiple carriers to subsidize, but still. I am passionately avoiding Samsung devices from now on.
I thought Nexus is exclusive to Verizon in the US. Not much help for the ATT, Tmobile and Spring folks.

What's the next phone after the captivate that's going to get a lot of dev attention? It seems like the Inspire and the Atrix aren't getting much, likely due to how hard it is to load ROMs. Is it just a matter of wait and see to know what the next well-developed AT&T Android phone is?
most likely whatever the next samsung phone is, if only because they don't bother with trying to lock them down
As it gets more defined I see it getting harder to load up custom roms for android. Ok maybe not harder but a longer flash process. I would say the next would be the next great HTC that comes out. A few have already moved from the Captivate to the Inspire and swear to leave Samsung alone lol

I do feel like HTC has the most support among enthusiasts, but it's hard to tell. Aren't the next Sony Ericson devices going to have non locked bootloaders purposely? If any of those hit AT&T, then I feel like those are going to be hot phones to develop for, since they have bloated software, unlocked bootloaders, and a lot of hardware. Or am I totally on the wrong track?
That, and when AT&T eats up T-Mo, we should have a lot more phones, since the MT, Sidekick and G series phones will be rolled into the AT&T portfolio.

Personally ive had such bad experiences with sony devices of all shapes and sizes (computers, phones, home entertainment equipment) that i would buy a locked bootloader motorola phone before i would buy from sony again. that being said. ill probably go for the next great samsung phone, probably the galaxyS 2.
Many of our great Cappy devs moved to the Inspire(adamholden, di11i, DG)
Personally I picked up an Inspire but mainly out of boredom, I even flash my cappy more now, lol. As soon as the sgs2 is out for a few weeks ill be grabbing that too. It'll be a pricey move but with the way Samsung has taken care of those customers I see it as a good investment.
I'd stick with Samsung for a few reasons:
-Their hardware is top-of-the-line
-There are minimal lockdowns and restrictions to functionality and development
-Their build quality isn't terrible (they use Gorilla Glass and hard plastic, etc.)
-Their software has drastically improved (launcher aside, TouchWiz is pretty cool)
-Their video drivers are the only ones with h/w acceleration of tons of video and audio formats, and their MFC has support for containers such as MKV
-You can find really good deals on upgrades to phones like the Captivate
Samsung just released benchmark figures over 3000 for the SGS2. I truly hope AT&T get it before the end of the year

Top of the line hardware? Yeah, right. Samsung's hardware is decent, I love the form factor of the Captivate, but the build quality and RF are definitely a mixed bag. Some big ups, and some big downs.
I would agree about the lockdowns, however, they are a lot more open than Motorola about it.
With Gingerbread source code released, I'm happy with my Captivate for a good while longer. There are still 2.2.1 roms I haven't flashed yet. I dont think I'll be moving on anytime soon
not sure what the next will be with the 4g galaxy s line being more diverse and the galaxy s 2 not being available on contract yet.
also i think the atrix will get alot but it will come in different forms. some (like me) are holding off for alternaltive before the splurge on an atrix. i want to see what others have to offer in the dual core areana before i open my wallet but very well might get an atrix. there will be kernel modules and patches rather than kernels built from source. also they are working to get full advantage out of the motorola webtop view. using it to launch linux along side android making the accessories almost worth having.

I wanted to love the Atrix because of it's qHD screen in the 4" form factor, but the way its locked up is just bad. I hope that devs are able to get past it, but the other thing that I'm worried about, both on the official update and ROMs side is that they will be worrying about the whole webtop/dock garbage, and that will slow down the actual software development of the device in order to incorporate a bunch of useless features.
I too havn't had good experiences with sony phones. They seem to be turning into the next apple. Barely upgrade their phones and say thats its a whole new phone. (x10/arc)
Definitely want the galaxy s II. that thing's a beast and a half.
So disappointed with the Atrix's smokey screen. It had so much potential!

Most of them reduce the bezel size so that a larger screen doesn't necessarily mean a way larger device. Take the SGSII for example and you will see that it ain't that much bigger than it's predecessor despite an extra 3 inches in screen size.

I have the G2x and the Sensation and while they both have tremendous potential they both have multiple issues. I would wait for Hercules as I am going to sell one of the two or both and purchase the Hercules.
buy or wait?
There will always be a newer/better phone that will be out within 3 days, 3 weeks, 3 months of buying your next phone. You have to ask yourself a different question, which phone will have the features I need and will really use? If you are simply holding out for the best phone right now you will be disappointed and frustrated and not fully happy with your next purchase. I love the Sensation. I waited for months to get it and I am happy with my purchase. I have always rooted my android phones to use unavailable features on stock phones like; the wifi tethering with my laptop and tab. This is already built in and available the moment you buy it. ATT and Sprint and Verizon charge for this feature. BOOOOO! Good for T-Mo while it lasts. The phone is responsive, comes loaded with useful apps and widgets, it's sexy and fun to play with I have Netflix working on it (so do many others, I did not invent the wheel), hbo-go, and other streaming apps that work great on the sensation. The camera is decent enough for me not to carry a dedicated camera for photos and videos. For me, I use multimedia daily, and this phone meets my needs. I was buying every new phone that came out and was never satisfied. The sensation is a good buy, the hercules will be out in the next 2-3 months and by then there will be another phone with even better specs that will leave you drooling. I am sure it will be a great phone too.
I was really excited about the announcement of the Hercules and besides the GPS problem, I loved my Vibrant(wife has it now). But IMO, as nice as Sammys designs are(I don't like the design of the Sensation) they make the bezel too big.
My sensation is just as big as my Vibrant even though it has a 4.3 inch screen. I've always hated the added real estate which is why I chose the Sensation over the gx2. If the infuse is any idication of how big the Hercs going to be, I might pass on it and see what comes out next year. Besides, I love the weight of my HTC. I hated how light my Vibrant was even though that thing was literally indestructable.
First off ask yourself the question cause only you can decide ,if you like bland vanilla and super amolded screens then go with Samsung, if you like widgets and eye candy then sensation is the one ....all phones with this much horsepower have issues and I mean all ,once bootloader is unlocked on sensation you'll have the speed to go with the looks ,and if you're not interested in flashing then you still got a great device , but like mentioned earlier after the Hercules there will be something better 3 months later ,it will never end
simply put:
4.3" qHD >>>> 4.5" WVGA
So far all of the information leaked about the Hercules shows that its not using the exynos soc. Just some food for though. The waiting game does suck though because something better will come out after the Hercules. That's just the way it is.

Yep, it's rumored to be using the APQ8060, which is the same as the MSM8260 without the integrated HSPA radio. This is probably because the Hercules will have 42 Mbps HSPA+ connectivity and it will need a separate radio for this and that the Exynos SoC is already in limited quantity (some SGS II variants will have the Tegra 2).

The killer feature on the Hercules is that 42mbps speed. The usb radios that are out are getting speeds that rival Verizon's LTE.
On the down side (for me) is that with a 4.5 inch screen and that Samsung bezel it is going to be a huge phone - nudging into small tablet territory. Battery life will also be tricky.
At the moment I'm not willing to trade a great svelte HTC design for a faster Sammy slab. But we'll see when it comes out.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA Premium App
Given some of the deals we've seen for the Sensation... I'd definitely lean in that direction. 4.5" is pushing it for me, and the qHD is nicer than I originally thought it would be.
I hope there will be good support from the community with custom Roms.. How are the chances for that to happen?
The Sensation is like the Desire... huge Dev support
It is a great Phone and there will be as much People like in the Desire section ... so much support from the DevĀ“s
The Sensation is just great! I would never take a samsung instead of an HTC.... Sense is too great and the bigger Resolution is so nice! You feel it very much and movies are just wow on this phone! And the Sound! Great!

Although it will technically be capable of those speeds, I doubt it will come anywhere near those speeds. The sensation should be able to hit 11Mbs theoretically but the fastest i've had it download was 7.9Mbs. I'm sure the Hercules will be closer to 11Mbs speeds in real world.

They just updated half their Android line up to 2.3.4 in the past two months. They've updated the SGS2 four times and a fifth update to 2.3.4 is due out by the end of the month. There's a difference between getting updates directly from Samsung and having to be dependent on your U.S. carrier to get them out. The global Sensation's are being updated now. Let's see how long it takes T-Mobile to push the U.S. update.

It should get 20 mbps with ease if you're in an area that supports that connectivity. T-Mobile demonstrated those type of speeds using a data stick.

My dad (a fellow geek) saw that I was struggling with my Infuse because it has little official support from the big-name teams. Basically, we found that if I wanted to use MIUI or CM7, I would have to use a port that didn't really work that well, and I'm looking for the best MIUI experience possible.
He came home today and surprised me with a Skyrocket, but the more we read, the more we found out that this isn't a widely-supported phone either.
With that said, I live in a big city, so I'll probably get LTE eventually. Should I stick with this phone and hope that the MIUI team picks up the Skyrocket, or should I go trade it in for an AT&T SGS2?
The sgs2 has a huge development community but the skyrocket is a far better device especially with Lte. I decided to stay with the skyrocket and have noticed that we are picking up some steam it prob will never be as big as the sgs2 but i think it will be more than enough to satisfy any user

This phone has quickly gained developer support. Its still very new. And our dev community will only continue to grow. Theres alot of development going on check out the dev section. And dont worry we wil get ics. And we have a great bunch of guys on our forum that help eachother out. With out bad attitudes. Be happy you have the best device available in this country.
Also I think I know of somebody that might be working on a MIUI port for out lovely skyrocket, and he's no joke either. The skyrocket is gaining momentum quickly. I would not be worried. The device is still young. And its basically replaced the OG S2 on att. Your pops is a smart man.

Worry not fellow SGSII owner (I have the sprint flavored one). There's a bunch of reasons why development on this phone is going to, pun squarely intended, Skyrocket. Here's a couple:
1. the SGS II is THE best phone out period. If they'd given the Galaxy Nexus an Exynos processor, I couldn't say that but the Sprint, At&T and international SGS II have the Exynos which means our phones are the best hardware wise. Developers like sexy hardware. Don't need 8 mods to make it lag free, it's already lag free, so they can just have fun with it.
2. This particular SGS II is GSM, which is exactly like the international SGS II sans LTE. This means that porting stuff from their phone to this phone is going to be much more simple than, say, porting it to the Sprint one (which is cdma). You'll start seeing ports to this phone from the international version very soon.
So GSM + great hardware = good development eventually. It's very new though so be patient. The Epic Touch has been out two months and our development forums have just started to kick and show some promising work, so don't get discouraged!
I've never been impressed with either MIUI or CM7, personally. That is just my opinion and I have used them both.
I think this device has devs pushing forward on ROMs that aren't MIUI and CM7 maybe give them a shot you might be surprised.

Yes clocked at 1.5 ghz. But still a great phone. I love it. Much more then the og gs2 i had for a month
There's also an international version of this phone too, right (SGS2 LTE)? It came out half a year or so after the OGSGS2.
So, maybe developer support will come pick up steam after a few more months?
Thats the hd lte your talking about. Its different but japan just got a skyrocket
Cool, you guys have convinced me to stick with this one! Thanks for all the responses.

Why do you like this so much more than the OG GS2?
Becaude of the people on our forum, i cant stress enough to have a forum with people who want to help and add to the betterment of our device. Also the 4.5 inch display, and lte ive got over 60mbps download. My comcast highspeed cable internet is only 18.

Oh yeah and the confirmation of our icecream sandwich update from at&t
It is nice to have a forum full of active folks. Even if there aren't as many as some of the most popular phones, a dedicated community can usually draw the attention of some of the bigger dev groups.

If you haven't noticed, we're getting devs at a nice rate.
Honestly, it's good as it is, because I don't want quanities of ROM's, I want quality ROM's.
That being said, with slayher working on CM9, and our device being literally identical to the T-Mobile SGS II except for the LTE radio (which adding our personal radio fixes), we shant not worry.
Plus, we have 2 devs on the horizon, and we have dev rotation, so devs will be getting our device soon.

There should be 2: an HD LTE and regular LTE. It would've been nice if ATT skipped the regular LTE version and gave us the HD LTE instead.
Oh well, it's all good. I'm still really enjoying my Skyrocket.

If AT&T had done that...
1. Murder GNexus sales.
2. Make all the AT&T SGS II guys hop, it has the new Exynos 4212 SoC.
3. Get amazingly huge development.
I've been debating on upgrading to the Skyrocket from my HTC Inspire. One of the things holding me back is this topic. I'm sure there are some great devs working on the Skyrocket, I just don't know any of them. Who are the two you all mentioned on the horizon?
Main thing I want to do immediately is put a vanilla version of ICS on the phone. Are there any roms out there like this for either phone?
Main thing - remember the skyrocket has a qualcaum S4 processor while the S2 has the original exynos. Not to mention the Skyrocket is LTE enabled but slower overall compared to the ATT S2.
ATT S2 is the closest compared to the original S2 (one hardware button vs 4 capacitive touch ones) so i'd say that will get ICS rom's faster...
my guess is that s2 will get ics pretty fast
samsung should do that, since s2 sales are quite good in all parts of the globe
Also keep in mind CES is only 4 days away and there might be a mentioning of some pretty stellar new phones. Just something to keep in mind. Personally I would go with Skyrocket, but don't let me fully influence your decision
Data Speeds - Skyrocket (If u live in LTE area)
Everything else - SGS2 (including better AOSP support)

More than 1 site (androidcentral, engadget) have done comparisons of the 2 phones side by side and said there have been no differences in performance as far as the human eye can see. Now, as far as development, I would go with the skyrocket. The skyrocket can run ROM's made for the T-mobile SGS2 and vice versa. T-mobile phones are always dev heavy.

im sorry but this is false. you really think the TMO version will get more than a fraction that the original SGS2 gets? (TMO USA, vs the rest of the world)
The OG SGS2 is the most active development variant of them all and the AT&T version can get easy ports unlike the Skyrocket. It even has CM9 already (WIP)
Plus the Exynos cpu destroys the Qualcomm in overall performance. Al lot of sites mention that the Qualcomm version is more stuttery and games arent as fluid, the homescreen gets jerky as well running heavy live wallpapers unlike the Exynos variants, plus the 4.5 screen models (SR and Epic 4G touch) have noticably less screen quality in color contrast where they looked washed out compared to 4.3 models and reported vertical lines issues.
Bottom line, Screen real estate and data speeds for web browsing and videos go to Skyrocket. Where performance and developent go to OG anf AT&T variant

The at&t version can't run the ROM's of the international version. And if you think that many at&t devs didn't convert to the skyrocket you are insane. I'm glad to see that you can debunk a professional review though! Another blind fanboy..
Here we go-
Skyrocket Development-3 pages
T-mobile SGS2 Development-4 pages for a total of 7
AT&T SGS2 Development-4 pages
Original SGS2 Development- 9 pages
So you say it is easier to port to the AT&T sgs2 but it just isn't happening. The skyrocket and hercules are significantly younger than the international version and already has 7 pages of ROM's, kernels, tweaks and hacks to the 9 of the international. Cold, hard facts.
Having owned both, I'd like to chime in here:
- The speeds on both devices feel the same. Benchmark all you want, but the feel is damn near identical.
- I actually like the size of the Skyrocket better than the S2, but that's completely subjective.
- The screen on the skyrocket does have a vertical line issue when the brightness is at the lowest setting, but even a quarter of the way up it's completely unnoticable.
- The Skyrocket screen has a splotchiness issue. It's really only noticable at the lowest brightness, and only against greys, but it looks like water droplets dried on the screen. It's not visible at all in my day to day usage but it annoys the crap out of me because I know it's there.
- Dev support for the S2 is incredible, while the Skyrocket's is good but still not AS good. The S2 probably has the largest dev community, but between the T-Mo, Rogers, Telus and AT&T community, there are plenty of good roms for the SR, including a CM7 alpha and an AOSP-like hybrid which is excellent.
- ICS was confirmed for both devices, but the feeling is that AT&T will push the official release to the Skyrocket first. This theory is strengthened due to the fact that AT&T has basically abandoned the S2 for the Skyrocket in marketing, pricing, etc. Once one of the carriers puts out ICS for the Skyrocket, it WILL be available for the rest of them.
That being said? You can't go wrong with either device. I prefer the larger screen (would have preferred 720p though), and I prefer a white device, plus I live close to an LTE area, so the SR was a no brainer.

ever hear of hellraiser? its a flashable zip that allows you to use i9100 roms on the AT&T version. So all custom ROMS can be used without needing to port. Add the pages you saw in the development section and you have much more than what the skyrocket will ever get. Did you know that the CM9 zip for the i9100 can be used too? one small tweak and you can direct flash and it works as well.

BTW if you want to talk about professional reviewers and comparisons. Here is the faceoff of smartphone envy and at 4:35 he clearly states that the Exynos SGS2 has always been consistantly faster than its Qualcomm counterpart in benchmarks and real world use. plus you can see how the Exynos model has better screen contrast as well
http://m.youtube.com/index?desktop_uri=/&gl=US#/watch?v=4RZedVdaEIo
here is another one from technobuffalo. 2:14 is where he states that Exynos is generally faster despite the lower clock speed
Any more "facts" you want to bring up?

Agreed with mike21pr.
Can you name a single dev that worked on the i777, and left to dev on the SR? I looked over the SR dev section and I don't see any familiar names.
If you actually read the i777 forums you would have known about the Hellraiser package mike21pr mentioned, meaning devs don't port i9100 ROMs. You download the desired ROM, flash ROM, flash Hellraiser package, boot, enjoy. Its that easy to use any i9100 ROM. If you followed the forums you would also know the i777 devs have a pet name for the skyrocket, they call it the ****rocket. I didn't see any dev in that forum at the time of the SR release that didn't vow to never work on the SR. That isn't to say there isn't dev support there, and that you can't team up with the TMo crowd, and that it still isn't bigger than the Vivid or Nitro forum. But, to make any claims that the SR is better than the i777 that don't directly relate to only the data speeds in LTE coverage (until you get throttled) is delusional.
Sent from my Galaxy S II (i777)
I know you asked about Samsung phones only, but I implore you to not dismiss the LG Nitro HD so quickly. I think the better two options would be between AT&T SGS2 and the nitro
The nitro has the Skyrocket matched or beat on nearly every single hardware component. The only spec that is better on the GS2 compared to the nitro is the CPU/GPU, which I think is beat by LTE and a 720p display. That is what my decision came down to, couldn't be happier. BTW, there is progress going on with getting CWM on the Nitro.
Whichever one you get, best of luck, all three devices are great in my opinion.
Now queue the "LG sucks go to hell" posts.
Having done research and searching (before this thread posted btw), I would choose the non LTE version. If I had LTE in my area, I would still go with the non LTE version. I don't own, but envy, the SGS2. I would trade my Atrix for it if I could.
First generation LTE is ok right now anyways.
Very interesting information.
So the key reason the i9100 ROMs can't be ported to the Skyrocket is due to internals (processor & radio)

Thats pretty funny, because when you go to their websites and the hands on reviews (not some bull**** youtube video) they say the t-mobile GS2 is an amazing phone. Benchmarks? Really? You are going to talk about benchmarks? That just shows how much knowledge you have right there. Another thing, how about you go look at the resale values on the phone versions...genius. Ummm... I own a HTC TITAN. Nobody said that the Skyrocket isnt an amazing phone, I (or should I say "we" since multiple people here agree and yet you only seem to have a problem with me) look past the marketing crap and know that the Skyrocket's main and only advantage is LTE. BTW I said benchmarks AND real world usage, i you watched the reviews its what they said exactly. I know benchmarks dont mean ****...
BTW now that u mention the Nexus: SGS2 has better cpu/gpu, better cameras, expandable storage, gorilla glass, and RGB layout not pentile, where the nexus doesnt, and ICS is a temp advantage because the SGS2 will have it too...
But, I would still choose the Nexus though because of the screen resolution and better support so you can put your pinchfork down and save yourself the childish fanboy naming lol

Nearly all of his 11 posts were at least a mild necro-post, some of them he really dug for. Probably his way of getting to 10 posts, but at least he tried to type something relevant in each.
So I've narrowed my choices down to the Sensation 4G, SGS2, And G2X.
I was a EVO 4G, and EVO 3D owner from sprint, thats why the Sensation is up their. As a tech guy, not having a phone is killing me on the inside. I REALLY like the SGS2 with its huge and vibrant screen. But the G2x is MUCH cheaper (I'm a student and I have really no credit, I have to pay $200 deposit w/ any contract) and the G2x specs don't look too bad, no 4G though ): I tested the 4G in my area at the local store and got ~22mb/s at the store on the demo phone... Could probably get even better... I can wait until next week for the extra $$$ to get the SGS2 (I do have enough for it now, but not for everything else and diving into my savings is a big no-no for me). Whats the cyanogen community like for these 2 phones? I WILL be putting it on either phone... I know CES is in a few days, but its not like a Tegra 3 phone will be coming out anytime soon. The Tmobile SGS2 has the snapdragon S3 CPU/GPU, the G2x is Tegra 2 while the Sensation is the S2? If anybody has owned any of these phones and can tell me about using them, that would be great. I need the pro's and cons and cons and the hidden problems.
I have the G2x which i absolutely love!! No Problems whatsoever, lots of development too. However if I had a choice i would probably get the SGS2. Just because It looks Awesome! i see/feel no big difference in perfomance personally when i played with it in the store, but that again was only in the store. As im sure youve read, there are a few G2x's out there that have there issues, screen bleed (minor) Reboots (sucks), etc. I was blessed to have one with zero issues, ive heard that the update that now rolls out stock out of the box has fixed the issues. either way, the G2x is rock solid for me ive owned it since June, and have put everything from CM7, EB, Weapon and everything in between, I really love how Weapon G2x is and use it as my daily.
I would say Sensation. Build quality, more development, and QHD screen
It has the same CPU as the SGS2 BTW (S3) It has better support for Cyanogenmod also
If the tmo SGS2 had a Exynos cpu, I would have chosen it.
Don't listen to the bias fanboy...get the SGSII. Read the official review on androidcentral...they notice no difference between the international SGSII and the T-mobile version. Oh wait..they did notice the bigger more beatiful screen!

Unless you see something I do not, just looked at the sensation forum at cyanogenmod forum, and there isn't even an Alpha for cm7 officially out for it...
Although the T989 isn't even officially supported at all either....

I just switched from a HTC Nexus running CM7 nightlies, to a T-Mobile SGS2 on Friday. Disappointed in the ROMs that are out there now and general lack of development - I'd done some half ass'd research before picking it up, I was looking at it and the Amaze 4g, and thought it had some better support.
That being said, rooted, put Clockwork and flashed Juggernaught on it Friday night, it has been working flawlessly. I would highly recommend it.

seriously?
800x480 on a 4.5" screen is good for you?
to me a true SGS2 is the international version.
what the hell were executives at Tmous thinking?
atleast with the Senny you get a higher resolution screen and good build quality.
for crying out loud...
I was very close to getting a Sensation...until I found out half the phones have dust issues due to a manufacturing defect.
Knowing that, I just had to go with an AMOLED screen (no dust issues). I didn't feel like spending $500 on a SSG2, so I just bought a Vibrant for $180 on eBay. I get to play with ICS and the phone's not too bad.
I also don't think I can go back to an LCD phone ever again. lol

atleast with the Senny you get a higher resolution screen and good build quality.
for crying out loud...

There is not a big difference in resolution from qhd to 800x480. I don't know why people act like your using vga resolution stretched out on a 60 inch screen. Also the htc has had ridiculous hardware failures. Like dust underneath the screen and two different manufacturers for screens. The power button has also been know to sink in. Just because it's made out of metal doesn't mean it's a better phone.
If you want more development go with the sensation if you want a big phone with less development go with Samsung galaxy s2.

noticeable when reading ebooks or text in general.
also, edges are crisper on pics in general, less pixelation too.
I notice these things and it would drive me nuts. (one of the reasons why I opted for the Senny instead of the SGS2)
perhaps some people can't... way the human eye perceive things differ slightly I guess from person to person.
anyway, I've had zero issues with my phone. no dust under the screen, no issues with my power or volume button.
amount of defects are actually far less then it really is I would bet.
it's just people that have problems are vocal whereas people do not aren't.
from what I read, HTC has fixed all the issues. just the initial run had some I guess.
mine is from the first run. pre-ordered and received the day of release.

Don't listen to the bias fanboy...get the SGSII. Read the official review on androidcentral...they notice no difference between the international SGSII and the T-mobile version. Oh wait..they did notice the bigger more beatiful screen!

Uhh, yes there is. Completely different processor. You have a 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon instead of the Exynos in the Sprint, AT&T, and International version. While it's no slouch, it doesn't even come close to the Exynos in terms of GPU capabilities. If you're gonna get the GSII, get a REAL GSII. No disrespect, it's a great phone and I'm sure has a great community, but again, completely different internals. It doesn't have the Mali 400 GPU.

He said they didn't notice any difference, he didn't say that there wasn't a difference. The 1.5 gHz Qualcomm vs. the 1.2 gHz Exynos was pretty close/the same in day to day usage, doesn't mean it will in benchmark tests.
