Buy sensation or wait for Hercules - HTC Sensation

Is sensation really good ? Does it have problems like g2x ? I have mytouch 4G now. Not sure to wait for Samsung Hercules or get HTC sensation ? What would you guys do ? Please share

Obviously asking this question in the Sensation forum is going to be biased toward the Sensation. I'd get the Sensation....but I'm not you and don't know your situation.

I have the G2x and the Sensation and while they both have tremendous potential they both have multiple issues. I would wait for Hercules as I am going to sell one of the two or both and purchase the Hercules.

buy or wait?
There will always be a newer/better phone that will be out within 3 days, 3 weeks, 3 months of buying your next phone. You have to ask yourself a different question, which phone will have the features I need and will really use? If you are simply holding out for the best phone right now you will be disappointed and frustrated and not fully happy with your next purchase. I love the Sensation. I waited for months to get it and I am happy with my purchase. I have always rooted my android phones to use unavailable features on stock phones like; the wifi tethering with my laptop and tab. This is already built in and available the moment you buy it. ATT and Sprint and Verizon charge for this feature. BOOOOO! Good for T-Mo while it lasts. The phone is responsive, comes loaded with useful apps and widgets, it's sexy and fun to play with I have Netflix working on it (so do many others, I did not invent the wheel), hbo-go, and other streaming apps that work great on the sensation. The camera is decent enough for me not to carry a dedicated camera for photos and videos. For me, I use multimedia daily, and this phone meets my needs. I was buying every new phone that came out and was never satisfied. The sensation is a good buy, the hercules will be out in the next 2-3 months and by then there will be another phone with even better specs that will leave you drooling. I am sure it will be a great phone too.

I was really excited about the announcement of the Hercules and besides the GPS problem, I loved my Vibrant(wife has it now). But IMO, as nice as Sammys designs are(I don't like the design of the Sensation) they make the bezel too big.
My sensation is just as big as my Vibrant even though it has a 4.3 inch screen. I've always hated the added real estate which is why I chose the Sensation over the gx2. If the infuse is any idication of how big the Hercs going to be, I might pass on it and see what comes out next year. Besides, I love the weight of my HTC. I hated how light my Vibrant was even though that thing was literally indestructable.

First off ask yourself the question cause only you can decide ,if you like bland vanilla and super amolded screens then go with Samsung, if you like widgets and eye candy then sensation is the one ....all phones with this much horsepower have issues and I mean all ,once bootloader is unlocked on sensation you'll have the speed to go with the looks ,and if you're not interested in flashing then you still got a great device , but like mentioned earlier after the Hercules there will be something better 3 months later ,it will never end

simply put:
4.3" qHD >>>> 4.5" WVGA

So far all of the information leaked about the Hercules shows that its not using the exynos soc. Just some food for though. The waiting game does suck though because something better will come out after the Hercules. That's just the way it is.

Yep, it's rumored to be using the APQ8060, which is the same as the MSM8260 without the integrated HSPA radio. This is probably because the Hercules will have 42 Mbps HSPA+ connectivity and it will need a separate radio for this and that the Exynos SoC is already in limited quantity (some SGS II variants will have the Tegra 2).

Which I why I got the Sensation. Pixel density FTW.
Cannot wait for the HTC unlock. Need to cleanse bloatware.

I love the resolution on this phone. Can't go wrong with qHD, it makes the Sensation that much more beautiful.

I won't go with a Samsung again after having the vibrant. Samsung is the slowest company to come out with updates.

The killer feature on the Hercules is that 42mbps speed. The usb radios that are out are getting speeds that rival Verizon's LTE.
On the down side (for me) is that with a 4.5 inch screen and that Samsung bezel it is going to be a huge phone - nudging into small tablet territory. Battery life will also be tricky.
At the moment I'm not willing to trade a great svelte HTC design for a faster Sammy slab. But we'll see when it comes out.

Given some of the deals we've seen for the Sensation... I'd definitely lean in that direction. 4.5" is pushing it for me, and the qHD is nicer than I originally thought it would be.

I hope there will be good support from the community with custom Roms.. How are the chances for that to happen?

The Sensation is like the Desire... huge Dev support
It is a great Phone and there will be as much People like in the Desire section ... so much support from the DevĀ“s
The Sensation is just great! I would never take a samsung instead of an HTC.... Sense is too great and the bigger Resolution is so nice! You feel it very much and movies are just wow on this phone! And the Sound! Great!
Just a Multimedia Talent..... I would not wait if i am able to use this phone! I will never miss something like this phone!
Just great! There are little mistakes but Touch Wiz ist just crap!

Although it will technically be capable of those speeds, I doubt it will come anywhere near those speeds. The sensation should be able to hit 11Mbs theoretically but the fastest i've had it download was 7.9Mbs. I'm sure the Hercules will be closer to 11Mbs speeds in real world.

They just updated half their Android line up to 2.3.4 in the past two months. They've updated the SGS2 four times and a fifth update to 2.3.4 is due out by the end of the month. There's a difference between getting updates directly from Samsung and having to be dependent on your U.S. carrier to get them out. The global Sensation's are being updated now. Let's see how long it takes T-Mobile to push the U.S. update.

It should get 20 mbps with ease if you're in an area that supports that connectivity. T-Mobile demonstrated those type of speeds using a data stick.

soon there will be a samsung amoled hd screen soon and thats my new phone.

G2x or Sensation?

So I have a G2x sitting in my shopping cart on tmo(not upgrading paying outright so no contract extenstion) and I'm faced with a huge choice. Do I buy the LG now or wait for the sensation? Like sense but always run cm for speed so every phone that I had that came with sense stock always was replaced with cm. There are pros and cons to both phones
htc sensation:better display and bigger(I actually like smaller screens)
g2x: more internal memory but less ram
htc is 1.2ghx and the g2x is 1.
It's such a hard choice to make. So my question is for those of you who got the g2x why did you get it instead of waiting for the sensation? What reasons did you have on going with the g2x as opposed to waiting for the htc? I really dont know if I should get the g2x or wait it out a bit. I am itching to hit that "complete order" button on the g2x though
I'd be coming from a mytouch 4g

I don't own a G2X, only played with one alongside my NS for a bit. I don't really know that you're going to notice a huge difference in speed coming from your Glacier on CM7 at 1.5ghz ...it's a really fast phone. Are there some other features you feel like your missing with the Glacier that you could get from the G2X?
Edit: I don't have a G2x in my cart, but I'm itching too as well...!
I was waiting for the Sensation....but I only made it 4 hours on the 15th before giving in and ordering online.
Only thing I like better about the sensation is the qHD display...but the G2X screen is still nice.
I also didnt want a huge screen phone that hardly fits in your pocket, the G2X size is good.
Well, I guess I'll just list my reasons out.
1. I, like you, don't like 4.3" screens, 4" is perfect for me and the display on the G2X is fantastic, even at 800x480 resolution.
2. I figured the .2 difference in ghz wasn't a big deal considering the resolution difference in the phones, 960x480 vs 800x480. As we've all seen, the G2X smokes the Atrix because of resolution alone, despite the 512mb ram difference.
3. Ram isn't going to make the phone run any better as we've already seen in Atrix vs G2X. It will help if your running tons of intensive apps at once, but it shouldn't be making much a difference 90% of the time.
4. A lot of devs are on the fence on supporting the sensation due to locked bootloaders. Even Cyanogen has said that they may not be supporting because of that very issue. And dev support is VERY important to me.
5. HDMI Mirroring on the G2X. This feature may also be on the sensation, but I haven't heard of it yet.
In all, I'm very happy I got the G2X. It runs like a champ and that's on Froyo. I can't wait till Cyanogen7 comes out.
P.S. The Optimus 2X has already been overclocked to 1.3 and 1.4 ghz if that means anything to you.
Hope this helps man. Good luck with whatever you get.
I never want a phone that has Sense on it.
Simple choice.
Well I got it because I'm a phone junkie. And I will be getting the sensation as soon as it drops. The G2x is a great phone much better than the vibrant and when it get GB it will be better than the nexus s.

Thanks for that man! Is that true that Cyanogen really might not support the sensation? Dev support is also very important to me. I never rely on carriers, always the community. I too am iffy about a 4.3 inch screen. I think my screen on my mt4g is pretty big enough for me especially since I have two android tablets for when I need a bigger screen android experience

Overall you guys are happy with the g2x? build quality is solid? any issues like bad displays or any nonsense like that?
Im in the same boat. im kinda leaning towards waiting though. The g2x is an awesome device but the larger and higher res screen on the sensation is enough to make me hold off.

if this is indeed true then i would get the g2x also. higher res screen (960x540) is nice but not as important as dev support. Btw, where did you read that cyanogen might not support it?

Honestly the g2x is an amazing device and couldn't see myself using the sensation for the sole reason of just sense. I had a mytouch 4g for about 2 days and returned it for the g2 all because of sense. Now from the g2 I'm on the g2x and couldn't be happier. So all these hours that I've been deciding... I decided to do it. It was in stock when I first put it in my cart, when I went to check out it said it wasnt available for immediate shipment. I looked at the main site and sure enough, it was out of stock Guess I will be calling the closest store in the AM seeing if they have any in stock. After looking at some vids of the sensation I think it's just too big for me. I think the biggest I would go is 4" Hope I can pick one up tomorrow
Hopefully! I'll tell you now my store was pretty well stocked and I was there about 2 hours after they opened. Funny thing is the sametime I was going in I counted about 5 or 6 other people going in for the same thing...good luck! =P

I'm personally waiting on the sensation I have a g2x its a nice phone I only use it for HDMI mirroring only use for me. I'm not scared of lock bootloader just be harder to crack. People said the g2 was unhackable and look at it now. Motorola signs thiers and uses encryption. The thunderbolt was hacked as well. If their is enough support it will be broken. Alot of developers are going still get this phone. The evo3d will be hacked as well once either phone is hacked well have an opening.

If T-Mobile is good around your area, go Sensation. If not, go Thunderbolt. Like someone else said, the only pro over the Sensation the Thunderbolt has is Verizon's reliable network and LTE.

No such thing as future proof...Just saying.
It's probably going to be down to what network you want more than anything. I don't have a choice. I'm on VZW no matter what really.
I thought the sensation was europe only. Its going ton be sold in US?
Well in my area the choice comes down to network. Maybe the specs on the sensation are better, but the reliable 3g and LTE on Verizon would make it a no trainer. However if I was in a better T-Mobile area and I wanted to wait then maybe the sensation.

Where I live, T-mobile is the only mobile provider that still runs only on Edge... And the cell reception once you leave the city I'm in is spotty just about everywhere... Although the Sensation will be a smoking device... There's a reason why all the truck drivers in these parts don't have T-mobile phones... Keep that in mind...

Here's my take...
I needed a phone now... Thunderbolt was the best Verizon had at the time...
When my upgrade is ready there will be a device better than both, and possibly more support in Android for the "newer" technology.
If I traveled away from Hawaii I would more than likely never pick up T-Mobile. Verizon gives the best overall coverage, and honestly the price isn't as drastic people make it out to be. The difference for me is $10 (Verizon gives me nearly 15% more on my discount).
So I will take what fits your wants when you need to get a new device. For me it was the thunderbolt, but chances are in a few months all the current Android devices would be considered "outdated" even though they really are not.
1. There will always be something that comes out that is BETTER. You can only get what you can when you can get it. You can't always wait for the next best thing b/c you won't ever get a phone with that mentality.
2. HTC Sensation has one of the best specs right now.
3. HTC probably sucks at locking the bootloader so HOPEFULLY you can root it.
4. Dual-core is a great concept and will help with battery life, but Android isn't optimized to take advantage of dual-core just yet so its not that big of a deal [yet].
5. Anecdote: I once chose a phone over a network. Never again. Plus things will get ported over anyways.
Last generation phones are sometime better, as well. I for one am a flash junkie, and looking at all of the mods roms and themes for older devices like the EVO I feel a bit jealous. However , by the time the Sensation is released, the Thunderbolt will have a ton of mods and roms for it. By the time the development gains momentum for the Sensation, there will be another better and newer phone coming out. You have to make the choice which you like better. All in all, I wanted an EVO with the guts of a MT4G and the network that only Verizon offers here in the US... the Thunderbolt is the phone I've been looking for

On TMo, what phone is the next best thing?

I have 90 days to return my phone at Costco so I'm wondering what the next best phone will be and will it be out within my 90 day window?
You can wait for the G2X to come in stock at which point hopefully all of its issues will be resolved. As for almost 90 days from now..I'm sure you'll have more options.

Check this out.
I'd get as close to the 90 days as possible and get a Hercules personally.
If ya can wait till the end of summer, the Hercules will be the most powerful, feature rich device TMo will release in 2011(most likely). That's if all goes well with production. You also need to like holding tablet to your face.... It's a 4.5" beast. Good thing about the Hercules is that it is reported to have AT&T radios, so you'd covered when TMo get swallowed up.
Keep in mind though, pretty much every early review of the Sensation 4G said it was compatible with At&T...only later to be dismissed as false.
Only bad thing, imo, is that's it's made by Sammy. They use way too much plastic in their cell phones for my personal taste. I've never held a Samsung phone that felt like high quality in hand. That will still not prevent me from checking it out and possible making the purchase. AMOLED is nice but for me is too colorized.
I like big screens, but one would think 4.5" or maybe 4.7" will eventually be the acceptable limit for cell phones...but who knows...It'll probably hit 5" eventually. If it has a 16:9 aspect ratio like the Sensation, then it won't be too wide at least.

I'm assuming you've never held a Samsung Captivate. at&t's variant of the SGS was by far the best. I've never had a higher build-quality phone except my trusty Nokia 3390 Gold (the first AIM phone) that took a dive in a swimming pool and still worked when I pulled the battery out and let it dry for 5 days. Its all about how much the carrier is willing to invest in the making of the phone and how much they will actually subsidize. It's not Samsung's fault the carriers are cheap LOL

they lost me at 4.5" screen with only 480 x 800 resolution... S AMOLED + screen or not.
Samsung needs to bump that up.
rest of the specs look good.
I do not have the sensation quite yet but I have had quite a few phones including the Verizon variant of the SGS. I said I would never buy another samsung device because of extremely slow upgrades and lack of developer support for the Samsung devices.
That being said it seems that has completely changed. Samsung is moving fast to catch up with upgrades and since HTC is locking bootloaders developers are moving to the platforms that are more open.
So if i was to give my opinions. HTC has been my favorite manufacturer for quite sometime but the Fascinate (Verizon SGS) was one of the best android devices i've ever owned. Good battery life, good performance, fantastic screen, Crappy interface(Touchwiz 4.0 is much better), and super thin and light.
I know i didn't answer your question directly but hopefully my convoluted answer is of some help lol..
Isn't that the Million Dollar Question? The specs on the Hercules showed it not having an Exynos Chipset, and instead using the same Qualcomm that's in our Sensation. It should look almost identical to the ATT Inspire with a 4.5 SAMOLED+/480x800 screen. After using my thunderbolt with a 480 x 800 4.3 inch screen and my Sensation with a qHD display it now seems silly for devices with giant screens to not at least be qHD. All it does is make the icons and text larger. Maybe it's cool for old people, but I now love the extra usable real estate on my screen.
So true.... That 4.5in screen deserves nope demands a qHD display
Such a shame... I would have killed for it. Oh well maybe in another six months
Mobile industry is running out of stuff to upgrade every two months.

I agree. Only thing I don't like about the potential beast of a phone.

Keep in mind though, pretty much every early review of the Sensation 4G said it was compatible with At&T...only later to be dismissed as false.

I have never seen a review that said that the Sensation was compatible with AT&T
Im good till the next htc beast atleast. I refuse to purchase anymore samsung phones. Vibrant was the worst phone I ever had.
2nd no QHD means no interest from me.

The fact is you can always make more room on any rom, on any device by editing the build.prop
Stock is usually 240, on builds for HD2 I always edited them to have either 200 or 180.

Go to www.phonearena.com they have an article talking about the FCC receiving the sensation with AT&T bands.

I seriously think that the G2x is the best phone in the T-Mobile line up.
Unlocked bootloader
Vanilla Android
Super Snappy
HDMI port
Tegra 2 processor
Great build quality
Great GPS
Great data reception
8mp camera
Tegra Games
Cyanogen and many others developing for it.
And is just 2.2 Froyo, This phone will be even better when 2.3 comes out.
Despites the issues people have been having with the G2x which most if not all are software, I do believe that there isn't a better phone in the T-Mobile lineup as of now.
Sensation is a good phone but not just as good as the G2x.

Why have you chosen the Sensation over Galaxy S II?

Hi all
I'm looking to get a new phone, and it might be a Galaxy S2 or a HTC Sensation.
What were your reasons to go for the Sensation instead of the Galaxy S2?
Thanks
Dominik
Both devices are very good. Go and test them and then choose.

I found the two phones comparable in almost every way, but I liked the way the Sensation felt in my hand. The GSII is very thin, but also very squared... the Sensation feels like a worn bar of soap and just fits me nicely.
GSII wasnt available in the USA, and I was ready to upgrade from my stupid MT3G (without the 3.5mm jack!)
Pretty simple.
SGS2 wasn't available in the USA at the time, and I was ready to upgrade from an original Samsung Gravity (yes, one of those crappy free slider phones that existed before Android came into existence). I would have definitely gotten the SGS2 if it was out, and at this point I'm already waiting for a phone that I will consider a complete upgrade from the Sensation (meaning that while I would've gotten a SGS2 from the start if it was out, I won't trade for it once I've already settled for the Sensation because it's not a complete upgrade in the sense that some things like resolution are actually a downgrade). Nexus Prime, maybe something early next year, I don't know. Even though I'm saying these things I'll probably end up actually holding on to the Sensation for at least a year, but I doubt I'll hold on to it for the extent of the whole 2-year contract.
Screen resolution was the deciding factor for me
Because screen resolution and better build quality... And it was a little bit cheaper.

The Sensation has an asynchronous CPU which should sip less power. Also in my opinion the SGSII feels "plastic/cheap".
Like others have said, SGSII wasn't available in the US at the time of purchase. I would have definetly chosen the SGSII over the sensation if it was available. But in hindsight, I really like the build quality of the sensation and the qHD screen makes browsing the web such a pleasure. So in the end, I'm glad I got the sensation.
I chose Sensation because I believed it would have better CyanogenMod support. But what do I see now, CM, AOSP and MIUI working on SGSII and only crappy alpha builds on Sensation. And don't get me wrong, I really appreciate the efforts of devs working on these builds, but I'm really starting to lose my patience with this. If I could choose again, I would probably choose SGSII.
Because I was on the @samsung #neveragain bandwagon, and never got off. HTC has a great track record of support their customers, and Samsung... well, it's Samsung. The only think that Samsung has to offer is their super amoled screens. However, when comparing my Vibrant to the Sensation, the Vibrant's colors looks kinda bled out. It was a no-brainer for me.
I chose sensation for the following-
* if i wanted an iphone i would have got one! I dont like the look of the sgsii
* i prefer the htc interface, i know it runs slower with this but it still very smooth for me.
* sgsii just felt way too light
GSII wasn't available in the US and the Sensation was the closest thing to it.
Its a phone and I felt it was time to upgrade. Am I dissatisfied for not waiting? No... Something better will always come out. In a few months after the release of the GS2 some people will write a similar thread to this in their section.

UI was a deciding factor. I love Sense
I chose the sensation cause I got it for free.

Because I'm with T-Mobile USA and could get the Sensation now. SGS II not yet available.
Because my favorite ROM cook got one .
Because I really do like Sense 3.0
Because there's plenty of great hacks available and again I'll mention Sense 3.0 because the Sensation can use Sense ROMs, but an SGS II cannot run Sense ROMs 100% perfectly.
Because overall it seems HTC customers are happier.
Because I didn't know HTC would be so lame in their methods for providing an unlocker (name, rank and serial number...) but 3rd party hacks overcome that. Do to this though, Samsung probably will get my money next buy, not the SGS II, but something later.
Because I couldn't get SGII when I upgraded my phone and there was no word of its ETA. I still one more upgrade left on my account so I am probably going to grab teh SGII as well when it available.
... because my my first android was the Vibrant. Some wounds take time to heal.

Should I get the Sensation 4G from T-Mobile right now?

I like the Sensation because of its price, battery life, and its ICS ETA
But not sure if today it's the smartest choice when I can afford better CPU and RAM.
Few stuff concerns me...
1. How noticeable is the difference between 768mb/1.2ghz and 1gb/1.5ghz (Amaze/Galaxy S2 T-Mobile) ?
2. Whats about the difference between Sensation's "4G" card and Amaze/G2S's newer cards (42mbps) ?
3. Are there any known issues/bugs with the Sensation 4G right now?
Many thanks!
you have waited this long, might as well wait out a couple of more months and get the new htc one s.
Actually I'm looking for a new phone because mine bricked today, so I don't have time to wait.
i think at this time it would be better off to buy at craiglist unless u want to start a new contract. As info about htc sensation, I think it's a pretty decent phone, but like all android phone you need root to unlock the full potential.
Thanks for the fast replies !
I'm not concern about my contract or future phones on different carriers, my phone died and I really like to get a decent one on T-Mobile today (Monday).
I couldn't find any nice phone on craigslist, or in a reasonable price (usually not less than 80% of tmobile full price).
My dilemma is Sensation 4G (1.2ghz\768mb\14mbps) vs. Amaze\GS2 (1.5ghz\1gb\42mbps)
I'm not sure if those specs are just nicer on the chart or I can really feel the difference in daily use.
And the bottom line is the price tag, if it doesn't worth that, I don't want to pay more for that...
Sensation has a great community n dose the s2 the amaze is only in us also depends if ur rooting as at default the sensation is ment to run at 1.5ghz HTC underclocked it we have nice kernal to give the extra power
xxx best things come to those who wait xxx
thanks,
on stock configurations, are the amaze\sg2 noticeably faster ?
Get it right now. What are youwaitingfor lol

Bear in mind that the 42 vs 14.4 are Max possible speeds, not necessarily what u will actually get. That's influenced more by the towers capabilities and network load around you. I'd get the amaze, its newer, has the better radio in case ur area has the high speed towers, and it has nfc which seems to be coming around now. I'm currently trolling Craigslist for an amaze, but people around here want a lot of cash for them.

agreed go with the amaze. it seem like everyone wants top dollar for their amazea
!!senseless sensation!!
Get a new HTC One series device!!!!!!!!!!!
For instance the One S. S4-Krait. It'll outperform every other device with a dual-core and sometimes Tegra 3 devices.
With that device, you are safe for about ~2 years.
Honestly I have to say Sensation, just because of the hardcore dev support... We already got a One X ROM (Virtuous S4X) and a tonload more awesome ICS ROMs, so why not? The Amaze is slightly more powerful but you won't see the same great dev support as the Amaze. More dev support stops me from getting jealous when a new phone is out (hence why I got the Sensation, the MT4G dev community is really slowing down). As for the GSII.. Eh. Not too sure about it. I honestly dislike the T-Mobile variant of the GSII because of the hardware differences and the screwed up screen. The T-Mobile Sensation is the exact same as the international, aside from the radios and T-Mobile logo.
I just left the gs2 to come back to the sensation. The gs2 is great in terms of battery and reception. Only reason I went back is because of the dev support for this phone. All the roms for the gs2 T-Mobile are the same all stock based touchwiz roms
