I tried EVA. And for about 36 hours she was my new retarded best friend. But then her constant ” I hear what you are saying but do not know how to interpret it” drove me nuts.
I finally uninstalled it. One key thing is to get the SVOX TTS voice add on because android's native Pico voice is about as attractive as the computer's voice from the old star trek episodes. Then you can make the woman's voice sound low and throaty, like a sultry marilyn monroe, or higher pitched and slow, like a preteen ingenue...whatever your fetish.
I told EVA to call me ”master”, but it felt too much like I was in a bad I Dream of Jeannie episode.
About the only thing she every did successfully for me was launch apps. But that is hardly worth it.
She just couldn't seen to understand much, yet I know it is google's voice recognition software...and it works great for dictating texts... So I don't know why EVA didn't work better. She had some good reviews.
Now I am just using the free app ” Voice Actions” by pannous, and it works great. I can say ”send a text to bill smith that I will be
10 minutes late” and its done. No backtalk.
But maybe I have been lucky so far.
I do hope they improve this technology quickly though, it is pretty cool to have someone announce your calls and call you by your first name.

I dont care who had it first because debates about droid and apple is utterly ridiculous.
I was at a party and this guy had the new 4s and was braggin about siri. So I used it and it was far more accurate than genius, vlingo, speak assistant, etc.
I didnt want to say droids had it first and show them how crappy it was compared to siri

Makes me wonder ...
Do you release something half ass
OR
do you perfect the programming.
wait for supporting hardware
field test it
then market it like you invented it.
DAM.
Imagine if the car industry wasnt regulated ... China puttin out half assed Heads up displays and German engineers would look like they jus perfected a feature instead of introduce it (Heads Up Display).
I think the debate between putting out half-assed (or as google calls it, beta) products, versus perfecting something first (or getting it better then average) before releasing it as a product has always been a core philosophy difference between apple and google.
The thing is, the benefit of goggle's strategy should be that all of the features the users' want..whether new, or improvements to existing features, should be able to be made by google so that by the time the ”perfected”.apple version is released, the google version should be of greater utility. It may not be as sleek or as shiny, but with input from a lot of actual users earlier in development, google's strategy is better.
I think the problem this time is that google had released some pretty good voice recognition software, and it had a default TTS, nobody really seemed to be clamoring for this type of thing.
So like the iPad almost, Apple envisions this concept and releases it, and now everybody wants it.
But if everybody wants it, why then during the last 12 to 18 months has no one been saying 'hey google, we really want to be able to have a voice operating feature integrated deeper into the next android version'.
I think its just that apple thought that this feature could be a ”must have” and they ran with it and developed it to this level.
Hopefully google will now realize it needs to catch-up in this area. Because to get as good as SIRI, you can't create it in an app. It needs to start with the OS.

This is called successful marketing. You get something that nobody wanted before and nobody really needs, and make people think they want it ASAP. Just like the iPad in tablet area, for which I'm still trying to think of a good, worthy use case.
Apple learned to do it very well, including preparing the crowd to swallow any crap they feed them, no matter how useless. Props to them.
Actually, unlike tablets, there is a good use case for voice commands - operate the phone while driving. I do recall missing that feature (that also works properly).. once or twice a year.

VERY VALID points. Im no Jim Cramer (financial analyst) but i think it boils down to ... Where is the focus and investor dollars being distributed.
Google has this translate app that is so good. although not every language is supported ... its nice to know i can have a convo in real time with my mexican neighbors LOL.
I used it and its bad ass.
I think Apple and Google love to do things opposite of each other. One markets with noise and distributes exclusively. The other goes by word of mouth and makes products accessible to anyone.
I look forward to ICS.
I was playing around with 'Voice Actions', testing the limits of its ability to provide me information and asking trick questions like 'please make me dinner', to which she (jeannie) replied ' Do I look like a microwave oven?'
The most clever response I have received is when I requested of her 'sing me a song'. To this she began to recite 'A Bicycle Built For Two' a la HAL. If only I could get her to slowly wind down and say 'my mind is going. I can feel it.' That would have made my night.

I can actually agree with you. It's as if no one is aware that there are any other touchscreen smartphones besides the iPhone, or that iPhone is "the best" because "everyone has them" or "because it's an iPhone". Now, if they could at least tell me why it's the best against all the other phones out there, then it wouldn't bother me. But not knowing anything about other phones and then saying it's the best is just...it makes me mad.

I would say it is, yes. But it also shows something else: The power of Apple marketing. Siri used to be an app in the store, and nothing. Then Apple buys the company, touts Siri as some "revolutionary" thing they created, and look at what's happening - suddenly Siri is the best thing since sliced bread and all other vendors should fear it. Yeah right. If you ask me, Siri is a fad that will quickly blow over. Even with Apple's marketing.
Joke, may be you haven't seen the power of SIRI, it is just I always see my sister talking to her phone and she said it is very useful especially when sending email, he will just say "send mike an email, Can you put up the dialyzer so I can start to dialyze when I got there tomorrow" she does not need to go in the mail app, look for the email addresss, click on the message box and type the message, same as text, I think it is not that useful, but now that I saw my sister doing that, I think I might sell my Infuse 4g and try the 4s, come on I did not post this to hurt your egos which now obviously hurt because you bought an Android device, I too bought Infuse 4g but I am open on any device that will benefit me.
The difference between me and some guys here, I am open minded on what will benefit me, and some guys defend Android like it is their company and want to beat Apple, Rim, and Window phone 7. And they don't want to let people speak that they made a mistake buying Android or they just love their android.

totally agree with this post. Until google puts more thought into the UX it will be behind imo. It has all the features but they're so haphazardly tossed together that using it is a chore.
As much as it is kinda cool in the right situations I see this being just another reason to own a cell signal jamming box. People are already rude enough to make a call while in speaker phone.

I sure hope SIRI isn't submitting your posts, because if that's the case it's completely worthless.
You do realize SIRI is just an app right? If you think an app can put apple 5 years ahead of android, none of your posts should be taken seriously. In my opinion, the SUPERUSER app puts android infinitely ahead of apple. Android has personal assistant apps, and I am quite sure the developers will be working hard on them now. Apple has nothing to the likes of Superuser and never will.

The iPhone is closed and Android is open.
Well!
That's the conventional wisdom about the dueling mobile operating systems. Apple's iPhone operating system runs only on Apple's iPhone (plus the iPad and iPod), and every app must be approved by the company before it appears on the App Store. Android, which Google gives away for free, runs on dozens of phones from many different carriers, and anyone can freely upload new apps to the Android Market without approval.
But that conventional wisdom is showing a few cracks, at least on the Android side. Take the flashy new Bing app for Android, announced today by Microsoft: It's not available to all Android phone users -- only the ones that use Verizon.
Shame
I think you don understand the concept of open source.

This is clearly an app problem and has nothing to do with the OS.
Your thread should be asking about bing app and not about android.

Edit: there must be a reason why it is taken down from the play store. They might be repairing some bug. And the server might be down while they are fixing it.

You don't have to tell me what is open source...even the walls know the basic concept. The thing is that Google has lost the control of android...to me a mobile OS fragmentation is bad....Onestly I don't even remember the exact number of android devices that I had in my hands ...rooted and not, with Sense or Cyanogen or even MIUI and just one iPhone4S with Jailbreak obviously....the true is that the iPhone 4S just works...it just works..how many times to I have to say it...if just was a little bit bigger would be perfect....and one more thing I have Bing also on 3 Uk carrier while with all the android devices I cannot have it anymore....shame one more time Google-android because Bing's unavailability is not the only problem...I could write a book to report all the android's problem.....Yes Ok the Widgets are nice but is not the only thing that count....the eco-system is more important than widgets believe me.

ofcourse it is open..it is linux and linux is an open source..
@francomur99 , please don't insult people by calling them to brush their own brains . You should mind your language on this forum . And , if this is about the app problem , you should make a thread about Bing and don't make the matter worse by saying is it truly open rather than talking about the app . Because this is unfortunately not what you wanted to ask right? Do not say about others first , say about yourself first . Because , mainly people like this don't tend to know what they're doing in the first place . It is an open source btw . Did that solve your question ?

bugs has nothing to do with opensource or being openly developed.
its simply means anyone can use or abuse it (like you try to say). thats the deal with open source and environment.
its like a garden open to everybody and no one takes care of it, it dies at the end and no longer will be a garden where everyone is taking care of it together. Google only cares of the OS and drastic meassures someone make a hack to dial dirty numbers or so.
if android was closed like apple, you would see only what google wanted. you would get only that app google approved and yes, you would have only google phones out and it would become a gimmick like iPhone.
and winphone and other bada operating systems would gain more market value.
your specific Verizon issue is with Microsoft and another company, not Android or Google in this case, they just gave the option to restrict distribution, the choice is the developer of the product.
Here is a great article i just read that talks about some of the major problems with android right now.
http://betanews.com/2012/04/28/goog...n=Feed+-+bn+-+Betanews+Full+Content+Feed+-+BN
Honestly I would love to see android be just android. All phones running the same version of android. I understand that no all phones can run 4.0 but every phone that runs 2.x should run the same version of 2.x, and every phone that runs 4.0 should run the same version of 4.0.
One of the biggest takeaways i had from the article above is that with apple, you are buying into a lifestyle. Everything is integrated, and the experience is the same across ALL hardware.
Heres to hoping for the best.
I'll jump into this flame-fest......
No one uses bing. Who cares?
That fragmentation nonsense is just hilarous, and is nothing more than a person trying to laughably say they are better than someone else because they chose to use a different phone.
17 year old emo kids who hang out at the apple store all day keep shouting that. What they fail to realize is that "fragmentation" = choice. If you want that "unfragmented" same old same old android phone, it's simple....buy a nexus device. Vanilla android right out of the gate.
But if you want "fragmentation" err, excuse me, what a normal person would consider *alternative choices* you can pick up any of the dozens or android phones currently sold that have carrier and manufacturer implemented changes. Some are subtle, some are very different.
In short, you are not superior to someone else because you drive a Chevy and they drive a Ford, because you use an Android and they use Winmobile, because you have a PS3 and they have an Xbox360. There is no better, there's only what a person prefers. For them. The worst kind of person in today's society is commonly believed to be a religious zealot, going around preaching to every one else how they are wrong because they go to a different church, or they go to one at all. They believe something, so they have to try and convince the rest of the world that what they believe is superior!
No one cares. Seriously, calm down, pour the kool-aid into the sink, and listen to what you are saying.

its linux , get used to it.
Linux got as example Kde , Gnome etc.. never been a problem or fragmented, so having different frontends on mobile is just a company trend, until Google takes on the task to control the mobil interface, and then you're lost like users with iPhone, no chance of changes onless you got apples approval.

Native turn by turn navigation (Apple will add it with iOS 6 for a few selected models)
Widgets
Ability to switch keyboards without SU
Ability to play Flash content in your smartphone
Sideload apps without SU
Deep Social Network integration with the OS (iOS just has Twitter and soon FB integration)
etc.
I could name a few more Android advantages over iOS but at the end of the day what matters is what suits your needs. Despite my love for Android OS and have been using it since the HTC Magic times i can say that my iPad in terms of productivity is way better then a Android tablet, but the same can't be said about iPhone vs my Nexus. Android does what I want it to do. iOS does not.
Strange how some people feel threatened when other people make different choices in life. I have an Android phone. I have no problems with other people having iOS phones. I see it as a boon, actually; when they have problems, I can shrug my shoulders and say, "Sorry, can't help you, I know nothing about iOS".

I always liked how android has all the apps hidden to the point where i don't have to have every app on my screen at once. That to me is really annoying and takes away from the beauty of the phone. Not to mention the ugly badges that the iphone has for notifications.

I applaud you, good sir. I see/hear too many individuals getting up in arms because someone else likes a different mobile OS. To each, his (or her) own!
How exactly is this about the Nexus S?

Today, I had a person say to me that Android will always be playing catch up with Apple. I laughed extremely hard. He then went on to ask me to 'Tell me one thing Google have done that hasn't been done by apple first?' Then I wondered if I could get a thread started stating all the things that Android can do that iOS can't

I was hanging out with my friend (blind ***cough***cough*** hardcore apple ban) on google+ and got into discussion of apple vs android. His exact statement was "Its not about product, price, quality, features or something... Its all about when you are associated to something". Since then I am considering such people totally blind moron and itrolls I don't give a damn what their phone can do I just know my 2 yr old nexus can do much more than their six month old iph4s
Only ppl playing catch up to apple are the manufacturers. Android as an OS has a 54% market share. That 54% is split amongst HTC, Samsung, Motorola etc. While the iOS has a 34% share in the market but that whole 34% is represented by apple.
Manufacturers are behind when it comes to implementation of the OS and the hardware. While Google is ahead with features of their OS compared to iOS.
I think that's what ppl mean when they say Android is playing catch up because other than a few Android phones, none have gotten the recognition of the iPhone. To the majority of consumers, most android phones are "just another phone" ... its sumn I notice everyday when talking to my friends. They don't care about amoled or dual core vs quad core or which gpu is used or what version of android its running. To them its just Android vs iPhone.
Yesterday a friend of mine upgraded from an HTC incredible to a galaxy s3 and she hates it. Yes, she hates it. I know thats just one individuals opinion, but it goes yo show how ppl don't differentiate android phones. To her the incredible was a better fit and its "still android."
To me, it appears that Google is making more of a push to really put their Nexus brand out there. I hope it works but once they push enough units to where they can bring n enough Play Store revenue from nexus devices alone, I can see them making android closed source to create an exclusive ecosystem like apple has. Especially because they have an in house manufacturer in Motorola.
They're already slyly undercutting other Android phone manufacturers by playing to the appeal of having stock Android on the nexus devices and quicker updates.
That'll be bad news for companies enjoying so much success off of Android popularity, but I'm sure they already see this coming if I can.
Right now, Google is letting them stick around because of play store revenue from all the devices.
On another note, if Google is satisfied with the revenue they're bringing n, then I'm wrong, but it looks like they're already going down that path.
Until they do so, Android won't have a "true" iPhone competitor in the eyes of the consumer. Regardless of how many great phones come up a because the stigma of it being just another Android phone.
Just look at eBay. Great Android phones are selling for the same amount as iPhone 3g.... its ridiculous.

Lol if android was playing catch up there wouldn't be so many lawsuits from apple
Just a poll. Just downloaded google maps on iOS and it is AMAZING. It looks really polished and feels really smooth. My question is does it look better than the Android one? Pick a side!
If you dont have an iOS device (which is probably most everyone here ), here are some screenshots:

No really....it does look really nice in my opinion. Not saying that the android one is bad, it works just as well. Its just Google did a good job on the iOS app. No need to hate. :good:

I don't know why Google gave them turn by turn navigation. I read before that was the reason apple made their own maps; because Google would not include navigation for free after spending so much money into their mapping software.

I think Google is playing a bigger picture, where they want everyone to use and custom to their Map app. Basically they said, there is only one map for mobil phones and tablets and it's GOOGLE MAP.
Think of all the iPhone users out there. They would be losing a huge base of they didn't do this. Remember the old saying.. "keep your friends close but your enemies closer."

I don't know how this poll can be conducted if the majority of members here are Galaxy S3 users who most likely don't have an iPhone. Furthermore, I don't see any reason for this to be here. Who cares.

The explanation I heard was that Apple was making the map app with Google data, but Google's licenses with their map data providers prohibited them from sharing real-time turn by turn direction data with third parties.
One of the reasons I sold my iPhone 4S was because Apple Maps were awful. Now that Google has released their Maps app for iOS, I might be willing to pick up another iPhone in the future (but I'd never go strictly iPhone...I'll always have an Android-based phone).
I'm a little ticked that Google admits the iOS version is "better" than the Android version, although it wouldn't surprise me to see an update in the Play Store soon to bring the Android version in line with the iOS version. Still, you'd think they'd do that BEFORE releasing it to iOS, if for no other reason than to not piss off their base of Android users.
While it's a smart move for Google overall (to re-widen their base of Google Maps users to include iPhone users again), it's not exactly showing the biggest girth of loyalty to people that have adopted their platform. I hope they'll fix that soon.

I think the reason is because they know the Android people have no intention of switching, but they know that the iPhone people might be willing to switch. Its sort of ironic really...they are trying to get them to switch, but make an awesome maps on the iphone.
And I posted this here because I know a lot of people who have ipads and Androids, so i thought at least some people would have an ios device. Second of all, i put screenshots in the OP.
Not sure if it had anything to do with third parties. Google wanted full control of the app, with their name on it. When apple refused, Google then refused to supply extra features like turn by turn and street view.

New Maps and Gmail look better on iOS. Google is testing out the new UI there first and I hope it comes to Android fast.
On online forums deluded iFans are now claiming this is another reason to choose iPhone since it has better maps - how stupid can they get??

Wow.
Also Google made sure their new Maps runs on all iPhones and iOS versions. Not like Apple with their lies and forcing people to buy a new phone just to get new features in software. And Google is helping users on a competitor. When was the last time Apple helped anyone? They even laugh at their own user's problems.
I wish Google had taken this opportunity to poke some fun at Apple and ridicule their crap software in iOS. It would be a good way to increase Android share.
So Google gave apple the updated maps first? No matter what.. Apple always gets stuff first lol. Even when it comes to Google.
