Google maps now released for iOS - does it look better? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Just a poll. Just downloaded google maps on iOS and it is AMAZING. It looks really polished and feels really smooth. My question is does it look better than the Android one? Pick a side!
If you dont have an iOS device (which is probably most everyone here ), here are some screenshots:

No really....it does look really nice in my opinion. Not saying that the android one is bad, it works just as well. Its just Google did a good job on the iOS app. No need to hate. :good:

I'm guessing this is sarcasm by the previous post. Correct me if i'm wrong

Haven't tried it.

Still can't compete with the s3..besides you can't see very much on a 4 inch vs a 4.8.....and why post this in the galaxy s3forum

I don't know why Google gave them turn by turn navigation. I read before that was the reason apple made their own maps; because Google would not include navigation for free after spending so much money into their mapping software.

I think Google is playing a bigger picture, where they want everyone to use and custom to their Map app. Basically they said, there is only one map for mobil phones and tablets and it's GOOGLE MAP.

Think of all the iPhone users out there. They would be losing a huge base of they didn't do this. Remember the old saying.. "keep your friends close but your enemies closer."

I don't know how this poll can be conducted if the majority of members here are Galaxy S3 users who most likely don't have an iPhone. Furthermore, I don't see any reason for this to be here. Who cares.

The explanation I heard was that Apple was making the map app with Google data, but Google's licenses with their map data providers prohibited them from sharing real-time turn by turn direction data with third parties.

One of the reasons I sold my iPhone 4S was because Apple Maps were awful. Now that Google has released their Maps app for iOS, I might be willing to pick up another iPhone in the future (but I'd never go strictly iPhone...I'll always have an Android-based phone).
I'm a little ticked that Google admits the iOS version is "better" than the Android version, although it wouldn't surprise me to see an update in the Play Store soon to bring the Android version in line with the iOS version. Still, you'd think they'd do that BEFORE releasing it to iOS, if for no other reason than to not piss off their base of Android users.
While it's a smart move for Google overall (to re-widen their base of Google Maps users to include iPhone users again), it's not exactly showing the biggest girth of loyalty to people that have adopted their platform. I hope they'll fix that soon.

I think the reason is because they know the Android people have no intention of switching, but they know that the iPhone people might be willing to switch. Its sort of ironic really...they are trying to get them to switch, but make an awesome maps on the iphone.
And I posted this here because I know a lot of people who have ipads and Androids, so i thought at least some people would have an ios device. Second of all, i put screenshots in the OP.

Not sure if it had anything to do with third parties. Google wanted full control of the app, with their name on it. When apple refused, Google then refused to supply extra features like turn by turn and street view.

Wow.

Also Google made sure their new Maps runs on all iPhones and iOS versions. Not like Apple with their lies and forcing people to buy a new phone just to get new features in software. And Google is helping users on a competitor. When was the last time Apple helped anyone? They even laugh at their own user's problems.
I wish Google had taken this opportunity to poke some fun at Apple and ridicule their crap software in iOS. It would be a good way to increase Android share.

So Google gave apple the updated maps first? No matter what.. Apple always gets stuff first lol. Even when it comes to Google.

Patent Suits over Android and Google

Google is now facing patent suits from BT. In your view will Google's android be taken down in 2012. I think google will survive. Android is the only other well devolped OS other then IOS.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
I think the only thing that will come out of this is that it may make android devices more expensive if BT manage to convince the court that google has actually infringed but I don't think they will to be honest.
People always make huge deals out of stuff like this. small patent infringement claims are almost always not any problems at all, if this has any grounds then it will likely just be google being told to change whatever it is that's being infringed on, or just pay the people some money to ignore it. There's no chance anything this minor could "bring android down" anytime soon.
Sent from my ICS SCH-i500
Bring Android down? Good luck with that? It's currently the most popular mobile OS.
I think that mass people will burn Apple and Microsuck down if they really shut down Android.

Google needs to offer new incentives for app creators

Well here we are again. Another rant about how android can not live up to ios when it comes to apps. I don't want anybody to tell me to switch to iOS, because I will never. Never. But iOS ALWAYS gets the really good apps then Android app developers stumble their feet and make a crappy and not as well app as the iOS as we wait aimlessly for the real thing. Its rather disturbing. So if Google were to offer some incentive program to new app devs, android would start seeing some good apps before iOS. I am still in high school, and a majority of people own the iPhone. And if they have a Android, they want an iPhone because of the lack of apps. I have very few points in an argument because they don't care about changing their launcher or being able to access their file system... so do I have a good statement? Thanks in advance.

There aren't many apps missing on android but as iphone has until recently been top os, and as iphone users spend more than android ones its not surprising they get paid apps first.

Android catching up Apple.

Today, I had a person say to me that Android will always be playing catch up with Apple. I laughed extremely hard. He then went on to ask me to 'Tell me one thing Google have done that hasn't been done by apple first?' Then I wondered if I could get a thread started stating all the things that Android can do that iOS can't

Yup sadly your friend is right. Google just enhance it and made it open source so all of as can modify our phones to the highest level of customization and tweaks. Apple keep their codes within themselves marketing strategy that's what i call that...

wow. ummm widgets. notification bar. screen sizes. customization.
Native turn by turn navigation (Apple will add it with iOS 6 for a few selected models)
Widgets
Ability to switch keyboards without SU
Ability to play Flash content in your smartphone
Sideload apps without SU
Deep Social Network integration with the OS (iOS just has Twitter and soon FB integration)
etc.
I could name a few more Android advantages over iOS but at the end of the day what matters is what suits your needs. Despite my love for Android OS and have been using it since the HTC Magic times i can say that my iPad in terms of productivity is way better then a Android tablet, but the same can't be said about iPhone vs my Nexus. My 2 cents.

I always liked how android has all the apps hidden to the point where i don't have to have every app on my screen at once. That to me is really annoying and takes away from the beauty of the phone. Not to mention the ugly badges that the iphone has for notifications.

I was hanging out with my friend (blind ***cough***cough*** hardcore apple ban) on google+ and got into discussion of apple vs android. His exact statement was "Its not about product, price, quality, features or something... Its all about when you are associated to something". Since then I am considering such people totally blind moron and itrolls I don't give a damn what their phone can do I just know my 2 yr old nexus can do much more than their six month old iph4s
Only ppl playing catch up to apple are the manufacturers. Android as an OS has a 54% market share. That 54% is split amongst HTC, Samsung, Motorola etc. While the iOS has a 34% share in the market but that whole 34% is represented by apple.
Manufacturers are behind when it comes to implementation of the OS and the hardware. While Google is ahead with features of their OS compared to iOS.
I think that's what ppl mean when they say Android is playing catch up because other than a few Android phones, none have gotten the recognition of the iPhone. To the majority of consumers, most android phones are "just another phone" ... its sumn I notice everyday when talking to my friends. They don't care about amoled or dual core vs quad core or which gpu is used or what version of android its running. To them its just Android vs iPhone.
Yesterday a friend of mine upgraded from an HTC incredible to a galaxy s3 and she hates it. Yes, she hates it. I know thats just one individuals opinion, but it goes yo show how ppl don't differentiate android phones. To her the incredible was a better fit and its "still android."
To me, it appears that Google is making more of a push to really put their Nexus brand out there. I hope it works but once they push enough units to where they can bring n enough Play Store revenue from nexus devices alone, I can see them making android closed source to create an exclusive ecosystem like apple has. Especially because they have an in house manufacturer in Motorola.
They're already slyly undercutting other Android phone manufacturers by playing to the appeal of having stock Android on the nexus devices and quicker updates.
That'll be bad news for companies enjoying so much success off of Android popularity, but I'm sure they already see this coming if I can.
Right now, Google is letting them stick around because of play store revenue from all the devices.
On another note, if Google is satisfied with the revenue they're bringing n, then I'm wrong, but it looks like they're already going down that path.
Until they do so, Android won't have a "true" iPhone competitor in the eyes of the consumer. Regardless of how many great phones come up a because the stigma of it being just another Android phone.
Just look at eBay. Great Android phones are selling for the same amount as iPhone 3g.... its ridiculous.

Apple Censoring "Android" in Reviews

Not sure where to post this, but I thought I'd share this with you since I am surprised that this has not received more attention. I searched the internet and couldn't find anything about it...
Apple is censoring any mention of the word "Android" in their App Store reviews. I wrote a review for an app and mentioned something about the Android version being better and my review was not published. I thought maybe it was because I said something positive about Android, but after doing some further experiments I found that they censored any mention of the word Android. So, I started using the word "And.roid" or "Andr-oid" or some variation, and those reviews made it through the filters and were published. If you have an iOS device try it out yourself. I haven't tried other keywords like Blackberry or Windows, but I should try those as well.
I can't believe how pathetic Apple has become. They are so insecure that they have to censor any mention of Android. If you're Android fan, be sure to write some reviews about how great And.roid is. Maybe Apple will get the hint that censorship is not the answer...okay, now I know I'm dreaming...
True, apple is afraid to see themselves crumble after losing so many people

I contacted Apple support about this and after they "looked into it" this is the response I got:
"Hi, (name removed for privacy)!
>
> (name removed for privacy) here again with iTunes store support. Forgive me, in my previous response I meant to address your review issue. We were unable to find anything on our end that would prevent you from publishing reviews. I don't believe we have any type of filter regarding Android, and Apple, did the comments you have successfully published have the same comments as the ones that did not publish?
>
> I look forward to hearing from you soon, (name removed for privacy) here again with iTunes store support. Thank you for being part of the iTunes family!
>
> Sincerely,
>
> (name removed for privacy)
> iTunes Store Advisor / Mac App Store Advisor
> Please note: Monday-Friday 8:00 AM-4:30PM"
So, I wrote back to them and told them that any mention of Android was definitely rejected. I also told them that if I misspelled Android the review was published, but if I later went back and edited the review changing only "And.roid" to "Android" the review was immediately removed. If I edited it again from "Android" back to "And.roid", the review was published again. I did not hear back from Apple after that.
Apple just doesnt want to lose more market share lol. They used to control the smartphone market but now android has like 63% and apple has around 30%. Not sure if those numbers are exact but they are close to that.

Apple are a manipulative bunch of liars
Following the news that NSA had planted backdoors in Android warmly accepted by Google (well, not in so many words, but who's going to believe that NSA's contribution to Android has nothing to do with backdoors?), Apple (who of course have also facilitated NSA access to the massive database of information gleaned from their own spying on their users) deviantly claimed that they "never allow any third party code in their products", intending to insinuate that secret Apple proprietory solutions are better than open source Android because open source Android code has NSA code contributions that Apple would "never allow".
Of course, since all apple software is proprietory and its source code secret, we just have to believe their honest words since nobody could ever verify that there are no NSA backdoors in Apple products. Do Apple merit our trust? Ha!!! They even censor the word Android out of reviews of their products, and then lie about the filters they have put in place. Given the sort of manipulative and exploitative behaviour Apple indulges in on a daily basis, I'd say they are no more to be trusted than the US government.
Hm..this is interesting but something I'm not suprised apple would do. It does seem that they are losing the phone market. I recently fired up my ipod touch to find that there was no more installious or as much development in the cydia community...at least not even close to what android phones have.

this really sound like apple is getting more and more nazi towards android, to the point of censoring the name itself
how low the monster has sunk
I have heard about many users who switch from iphones to android terming their new experience to be 'exotic' and 'awesome' but I have hardly heard about android user switching to iphones and said anything extraordinary. I think apple iphone's hardware is amazing. From the design to performance, it is great. But the biggest letdown with iphones is iOS. iOS still looks, feels, the same after so many years. Yes they have changed the look a little in iOS7 but it is still the same old thing. I am not a big fan of customization but it still bugs me to use iphones that still looks the same when I owned iphone 3g.
Hah this is hilarious.

They would rather charge more and make everything 'just work' without giving you the options and customization (aka make their QA much harder)

They're trying to tap into the fitness-fad that Apple is pushing into, that Samsung is spearheading. Because they think that's where the money is to be made which is why they're pushing for Android Wear to stay competitive. I think it's a waste of time. On the other hand, the new tools provided for their cloud services and online debugging sounds neat! I hope Google will continue to push software performance before features such that we can work toward improving battery life above all else.

I kinda felt the same. However, their Material Design concept I like and I hope they continue to push that directive.
The idea of being able to design in layers to unify the visual experience across platforms sounds nice. I hope they put out the proper SDKs soon so we can test this out.
EDIT: According to PhoneArena: the beta SDKs will come out tomorrow. Nice!
My reaction was pretty meh
Didn't really think they lived upto the expectation. 90% was all vapourware. Auto, TV are niche segments. Some fitness related API's which again looks vapourware like that [email protected] thingy..
I don't see any massive changes in Android atleast in UI or features. Yea, some 64-bit and ART and stuffs. Didn't find the material UI any good either. It was ok, but nothing groundbreaking as of now.
