They're trying to tap into the fitness-fad that Apple is pushing into, that Samsung is spearheading. Because they think that's where the money is to be made which is why they're pushing for Android Wear to stay competitive. I think it's a waste of time. On the other hand, the new tools provided for their cloud services and online debugging sounds neat! I hope Google will continue to push software performance before features such that we can work toward improving battery life above all else.

I kinda felt the same. However, their Material Design concept I like and I hope they continue to push that directive.

The idea of being able to design in layers to unify the visual experience across platforms sounds nice. I hope they put out the proper SDKs soon so we can test this out.
EDIT: According to PhoneArena: the beta SDKs will come out tomorrow. Nice!

My reaction was pretty meh
Didn't really think they lived upto the expectation. 90% was all vapourware. Auto, TV are niche segments. Some fitness related API's which again looks vapourware like that [email protected] thingy..
I don't see any massive changes in Android atleast in UI or features. Yea, some 64-bit and ART and stuffs. Didn't find the material UI any good either. It was ok, but nothing groundbreaking as of now.
Let's see how it works when things are polished. As of now, I don't feel any great excitement.

Google I/O is more developer oriented not much consumer information development stuff is pretty cool, though just not as "exciting" as a shiny new nexus or android silver announcement.
Also what is up with all the protestors... so annoying. Apparently google is making killer robots, I just hope I can ADB into them.

I cannot watch it due to being limited with my data right at the moment. Just wondering, has a new android version been released?

This game is on Pc has it been ported to HD2 cant find anything on search but looks basic and pretty good.
I'm afraid that there is no winmo port nor any news about it, however it would be one of the coolest games for hd2 ever.
Might be able to get the swf file from the website version of the game running via flash lite on the hd2 (not tried)
That sucks why does the crappy iphone have all the good apps. Would be amazing if the HD2 could port the whole apple appstore
been waiting for this to be released on our HD2 for quite a while now.

Probably because winmo phone owners don't support the microsoft app store enough to entice enough professional developers to put in the effort. They're happy to insult it even though its success/failure is probably related to the life blood of the windows mobile platform and their phone. I don't like Itunes/iphone as it is a horriblly closed platform - but millions buy from its app store so professional developers write for it and the platform (in terms of apps) flourishes. Yes, we've got a great freeware scene on windows mobile - but that doesn't attract professional developers who want to pay their bills with their talent.
I'd be interested to know why some of the best apps on XDA aren't on there - not every winmo/hd2 phone owner is going to go via XDA (unfortunately) but most will load up the app store at one point or another - xda could make a big difference to the perception of the microsoft app store (and hence the windows mobile platform as a whole) by releasing their best apps there too. Snowballs don't roll unless they're pushed.

Its rather costly to put apps on Marketplace. And for the people who like to create free apps, it's counterproductive.
let's face it, winmo users have been used to sideloading apps for a decade...it isn't gonna change anytime soon.

It's not costly at all to put apps on marketplace. You can get five apps put on marketplace for just $99. My first app made that $99 back on the 1st night it went on sale (and that's just a UK only one) with four app submissions still to go included in the price. Even apps at the most minimal cost will recoup that 99. Why is their such a negative feeling to (our own) the microsoft app store. Especially from us! It's better T&C's than the apple one - and that one we're completely jealous of! We're our own enemy.
XDA could get behind our app store, support it, and be a massive contributor to it!, but mainly just stop insulting it or criticising it, or only ever mentioning the freeware app stores - we're the only ones who'll end up suffering for it if it never grows and therefore never attracts more quality apps and therefore our platform just dies from lack of professional developer support. I love winmo, but phones these days are being judged by their app stores, just look at http://best-apps.t3.com/ as an example - it doesn't make any mention of the thousands of freeware winmo apps available, or xda apps, just what is in the official app store - and it's lack of apps there is making winmo look crap.
I really wish too that some of the top app writers from the iphone would port some of their wonderful apps, but I can also see why they don't bother with the way the app store is perceived at the moment.
XDA could make a real difference to our platform - but I'm worried we prefer to 'hide away' in our web site with a superior look on our faces rather than actually getting out and showing the world what hd2's etc. can really do.
it works on iphone

Given Samsungs previous support of Cyanogen this is probably good news. Since he announced that Cyanogen will remain a side project of his it means we won't see it by default on Samsung phones but it will mean that their phones will probably edge closer to something resembling Cyanogen and be great for those that never switch to community created roms.
With Google buying Motorola, Samsung knows they need to step up their game to compete against Googorola phones in the future, this will be part of that process.

The past few days have been pretty exciting.
Whatever reasons are being announced, for Samsungs hiring of Mr. Cyanogen, intimidating Google has to be a big one. Especially being that it is only 11 months since Google tried to shut down Cyanogen (http://bit.ly/obp8sD).
Also, everyone is now talking about Amazon's killer Android tablet (http://bit.ly/mUS5O0). I think all rumors but Amazon's Kindle shows they can do tablets, Amazon doesn't have the "just for nerds" label that scares some Android and maybe even iPad users away, and if Amazon sells the tablet for $250, a $50 loss for each tablet they sell, Amazon will become one of the biggest Android players.
Google's purchase of Motorola Mobile has been classified by some as a patent battle but others (http://bit.ly/mUS5O0) think there is more to it.
And Apple and Nokia seem to be joining in the patent battle (http://bit.ly/n2q0Oe).
Leverage may just be your thoughts CD, but I think they're on target. Though I agree with your concept, I'm pretty certain I don't have a clue about the details. The big boys are playing hardball and all I can do is watch.

Android catching up Apple.

Today, I had a person say to me that Android will always be playing catch up with Apple. I laughed extremely hard. Then I wondered if I could get a thread started stating all the things that Android can do that iOS can't

Yup sadly your friend is right. Google just enhance it and made it open source so all of as can modify our phones to the highest level of customization and tweaks. Apple keep their codes within themselves marketing strategy that's what i call that...

wow. ummm widgets. notification bar. screen sizes. customization.
Native turn by turn navigation (Apple will add it with iOS 6 for a few selected models)
Widgets
Ability to switch keyboards without SU
Ability to play Flash content in your smartphone
Sideload apps without SU
Deep Social Network integration with the OS (iOS just has Twitter and soon FB integration)
etc.
I could name a few more Android advantages over iOS but at the end of the day what matters is what suits your needs. Despite my love for Android OS and have been using it since the HTC Magic times i can say that my iPad in terms of productivity is way better then a Android tablet, but the same can't be said about iPhone vs my Nexus. My 2 cents.

I was hanging out with my friend (blind ***cough***cough*** hardcore apple ban) on google+ and got into discussion of apple vs android. His exact statement was "Its not about product, price, quality, features or something... Its all about when you are associated to something". Since then I am considering such people totally blind moron and itrolls I don't give a damn what their phone can do I just know my 2 yr old nexus can do much more than their six month old iph4s
Only ppl playing catch up to apple are the manufacturers. Android as an OS has a 54% market share. That 54% is split amongst HTC, Samsung, Motorola etc. While the iOS has a 34% share in the market but that whole 34% is represented by apple.
Manufacturers are behind when it comes to implementation of the OS and the hardware. While Google is ahead with features of their OS compared to iOS.
I think that's what ppl mean when they say Android is playing catch up because other than a few Android phones, none have gotten the recognition of the iPhone. To the majority of consumers, most android phones are "just another phone" ... its sumn I notice everyday when talking to my friends. They don't care about amoled or dual core vs quad core or which gpu is used or what version of android its running. To them its just Android vs iPhone.
Yesterday a friend of mine upgraded from an HTC incredible to a galaxy s3 and she hates it. Yes, she hates it. I know thats just one individuals opinion, but it goes yo show how ppl don't differentiate android phones. To her the incredible was a better fit and its "still android."
To me, it appears that Google is making more of a push to really put their Nexus brand out there. I hope it works but once they push enough units to where they can bring n enough Play Store revenue from nexus devices alone, I can see them making android closed source to create an exclusive ecosystem like apple has. Especially because they have an in house manufacturer in Motorola.
They're already slyly undercutting other Android phone manufacturers by playing to the appeal of having stock Android on the nexus devices and quicker updates.
That'll be bad news for companies enjoying so much success off of Android popularity, but I'm sure they already see this coming if I can.
Right now, Google is letting them stick around because of play store revenue from all the devices.
On another note, if Google is satisfied with the revenue they're bringing n, then I'm wrong, but it looks like they're already going down that path.
Until they do so, Android won't have a "true" iPhone competitor in the eyes of the consumer. Regardless of how many great phones come up a because the stigma of it being just another Android phone.
Just look at eBay. Great Android phones are selling for the same amount as iPhone 3g.... its ridiculous.

I think Google is playing a bigger picture, where they want everyone to use and custom to their Map app. Basically they said, there is only one map for mobil phones and tablets and it's GOOGLE MAP.
Think of all the iPhone users out there. They would be losing a huge base of they didn't do this. Remember the old saying.. "keep your friends close but your enemies closer."

The explanation I heard was that Apple was making the map app with Google data, but Google's licenses with their map data providers prohibited them from sharing real-time turn by turn direction data with third parties.
One of the reasons I sold my iPhone 4S was because Apple Maps were awful. Now that Google has released their Maps app for iOS, I might be willing to pick up another iPhone in the future (but I'd never go strictly iPhone...I'll always have an Android-based phone).
I'm a little ticked that Google admits the iOS version is "better" than the Android version, although it wouldn't surprise me to see an update in the Play Store soon to bring the Android version in line with the iOS version. Still, you'd think they'd do that BEFORE releasing it to iOS, if for no other reason than to not piss off their base of Android users.
While it's a smart move for Google overall (to re-widen their base of Google Maps users to include iPhone users again), it's not exactly showing the biggest girth of loyalty to people that have adopted their platform. I hope they'll fix that soon.

I think the reason is because they know the Android people have no intention of switching, but they know that the iPhone people might be willing to switch. Its sort of ironic really...they are trying to get them to switch, but make an awesome maps on the iphone.
And I posted this here because I know a lot of people who have ipads and Androids, so i thought at least some people would have an ios device. Second of all, i put screenshots in the OP.
Not sure if it had anything to do with third parties. Google wanted full control of the app, with their name on it. When apple refused, Google then refused to supply extra features like turn by turn and street view.

Wow.
Also Google made sure their new Maps runs on all iPhones and iOS versions. Not like Apple with their lies and forcing people to buy a new phone just to get new features in software. And Google is helping users on a competitor. When was the last time Apple helped anyone? They even laugh at their own user's problems.
I wish Google had taken this opportunity to poke some fun at Apple and ridicule their crap software in iOS. It would be a good way to increase Android share.
So Google gave apple the updated maps first? No matter what.. Apple always gets stuff first lol. Even when it comes to Google.

Why is that a bad thing? What Cyanogen wants to do is have a more open Android system. Google seriously has too much control over it. Today, a lot of Android isn't as open as it used to be.
Even if Microsoft is investing in Cyanogen and pushing them to do something for the Windows Phone platform, I think that is a good thing.
Competition breeds innovation. If it wasn't for Apple, we'd still be on Windows Mobile 6.5 or Symbian S60. If it wasn't for Google, iPhones would still not have copy and paste.
Know this that at the end of the day, no single company should be able to strong arm the customer to use what they think is right. Apple tried to do that and Android grew as a result of it.
I agree with what you say, but it seems that Cyanogen (based on recent comments by C, Inc.) is going to use Microsoft to strong arm google.
The entire "we will take android away from google" is counterproductive imho.
We shall see as the situation transpires.
Money talks and sometimes ruins good things. Kondik is a rich man now.

That may be a biased thread but it does prove what I'm saying overall.
Here is the paragraph in that article that concerns me greatly.
Cyanogen takes the Android source code and modifies it, adding more features and porting it to other devices. It has also started supplying Android builds directly to OEMs (like the OnePlus One), which ship the software on devices instead of stock Android. Last week during a talk in San Francisco, Cyanogen's CEO said the company's goal was to "take Android away from Google." It wants to replace the Google Play ecosystem with apps of its own, the same way that Amazon uses the Android Open Source Project for its Kindle Fire products but adds its own app and content stores.

I don't mind if they want to do what Amazon did with the Kindle line, but that statement by their CEO is a bold one indeed.
The funny part is that if they take the Amazon course, the community will just do what they did with the Kindle, root it and install google aosp.
I just pray that they don't discontinue CyanogenMod when their game plan starts to come to fruition.
We talk of fragmentation now...just wait. lol
I totally disagree that they want a more open system for android. If they are talking about their own store, etc...they want to control their own stuff, which in my opinion makes things more closed on their end.
Controlling their own identity if fine by me, but like I said....the consumer will deal with more fragmentation than ever.

You know what will happen? People will root the devices, remove their nonsense and flash Google Play services via TWRP..

I agree that it may be a good thing, with influx of capitol more can be done and anything which leads into a more open platform is imo a good thing. If they end up going down a M$ or Google path with their OS (if they branch out into doing something like that commercially) of controlling everything then yea... it's gonna suck. Small companies/people making a ton of money is not necessarily a bad thing. Time will tell.
Yes . Google has a lot of control over android and its good if Cyanogen wants to change that by making it more open source but having their own play store and services doesn't sound like that. It just kinda shows that Cyanogen wants to up their game and make some heavy money with Microsoft at their back.
As long as it ends up being good for us consumers , I am happy .
Competitions is a good thing. The more they compete the more we get.
OK OK I was a bit tired and grumpy about the cyanogen + Microsoft deal.
I wouldn't hesitate putting CyanogenMOD on my phone if/when it develops .
Still miffed about Cyanogen, Inc. pompous attitude.

Don't feel bad. Many feel the same way to the point of even removing their repos from their roms.
Well, I support Cyanogen. But having their own playstore? Fragmentation much?
In my last phone with cm, I never used any gapps or google services. Thats what true android is, android free of bloatware. The last thing I want is a custom rom with its its own set of bloatware.
If they keep CM the same, Ill stay happy. I never respected google with their policies regarding android or unauthorized use of resources by their gapps.
If they try to align with microsoft and perhaps collaborate with them, yeah, sure. I just hope they dont turn android into windows because in that case im out.
Edit:
OP, I dont understand why you support google that much. If googles trend keeps on going, android will end up like a bad iOS copycat, with so much taken away from AOSP.
never did use cyanogen. but i think it is a good idea on investing.
we need someone to rake the dough?

Simple: they are letting Microsoft directly in the front door. Sure MS makes revenue now from Android... but Google isn't welcoming them into the fold.

Really, thats it? I still dont understand why you support google. MS makes money out off android anyway, with their licenses and patents.

I was about to say... if you think MS isn't already making money off of Android, you need to sit down and learn how all (or most) devices interconnect. Nobody in this sort of business allows cross-platform anything without getting some payment out of it, which is typically in the form of money.
LOL wanna reread my last post?

LOL
...that said, if Google didn't want MS in their products, they could have just offered a closed system a la Apple (over-simplifying here, but I digress). Honestly though, if you want to blame something on this whole thing, blame the general userbase.

Yes, but closed system would be totally in contrary of Linux' open source philosophy. They would have to abandon Android then
And now there are so many $$$ signs shining in Google's eyes....
