Contract question - HTC Inspire 4G

I understand that this question is not directly about the Inspire or it's development so I will also understand if the Mods need to delete the thread. It just seemed like the best place to ask my question.
I think the clerk at Best Buy screwed up when I bought my Inspire last April. He sold it to me on the contract price but it seems he did not renew my contract. AT&T is telling my I am no longer under contract. Does this sound right? Or is the AT&T website just screwed up right now? Has anything like this happened to anyone before?

Open phone dial *639# and "call" it'll send a message to you with your upgrade date. See what it says.

I tried that about an hour ago and still haven't got a message back. Maybe that means I'm free!

Poop, spoke too soon. I just re-sent that number and got a response immediately.
Response: "As a valued customer, we can offer you an upgrade with a new 2-yr commitment and an $18 upgrade fee."
Still looks like I'm free!

I wouldn't count your horses yet. You bought the phone from Bestbuy and not ATT. ATT might now be offering you an upgrade this time. I only say this because my girlfriend recently bought a phone for sprint through bestbuy. And Sprint offered her an upgrade just 2 months later when the Evo 3D came out.

all that matters is what At&T's records say. You're in the clear.

I guess I'll find out for sure when a new phone I want comes out.

Early activation price - $275 until Saturday, 7/24!

Just took home my Captivate for $275 from a corporate AT&T Wireless store. Only requirement to get EARLY activation pricing is that you haven't upgraded your line within 6 months. NO ONE said anything about this anywhere until today - have been in 4 different corp AT&T stores, and finally someone said "early upgrade = new activation + $75 = $275 for the Captivate." Deal is good UNTIL Saturday, 7/24, when the pricing goes back up to $350 (Samsung is offering $150 back-end rebate currently) + 75 for early activation.
Get it while you can! Better than AT&T's no-commitment price of $499 and even their phantom $350 pricing they said on Facebook and Twitter, but won't honor after some lucky folks got them early last week!!! Been struggling with this mess for 2 days now, just trying to get it and finally found out about this, so make sure you all aren't buying them at no-commitment pricing, that's just outrageous....
This is the first I've heard that the $200 2yr contract renewal price is temporary. I'm eligible for an updgrade next week! grr...
Where'd you see that mentioned?

Maybe AT&T noticed demand for this phone and said.. Hmmm..how do we make more money on it?
I was surprised to see 10 people lined up Sunday morning to get this phone when the store opened.

Has anyone confirmed this?
Just got off the phone with a CSR, he didn't know anything about this being a short term deal. He spent about 5 minutes looking it up, so I hope he wasn't just saying that to get me off of the phone.
Oh, and how long have they been ending their calls by saying "Thanks for being the best part of AT&T" or something like that? That's ridiculously cheesy.

I just walked into an AT&T store and was able to use the early upgrade and get the phone for the 199+75 +18 (296 with everything totaled up). You have to not have had a upgrade within the last 6 months. That's it... and be in good standing ofcourse.
I got my Captivate on Sunday for $275. I did an early upgrade this past December for a BB 9700, so I was eligible for the early upgrade (I didn't know I was at the time). I was hoping to purchase for the "$350" non-contract price last week, but the rep @ the store last Thursday said I would qualify for the early upgrade, but they weren't going to sell it to me until the 18th. $275 was cheaper than $350 just to add 7 month to my contract, so I had planned to go that way. Luckily I was since the phone went to $499. So yes, it is true.
Contract
Do you go under another 2 year contract for this price?

I'd try again, seems like it just depends on who you get. I'm trying to get my upgrade pushed forward 3 months (it will be a year since I got my Tilt 2 in October), so far I've had one CSR tell me to just walk into a store and use the upgrade off of one of my family plan's other lines, the other told me she could only make it that much earlier if I increased my plan, but that isn't going to happen lol.

I also got my Tilt 2 at the same time. Your best bet is to call CSR...just call back again and hope to get a different person if they tell you no the first time. It's a matter of getting the right person. The guy I talked to this early morning told me that it's best to call after midnight since you get the seasoned employees but you have to be premiere...if you call during the day most likely youll get a trainee

I stand corrected. I called back and specifically mentioned overriding the upgrade date, and the CSR said that I could do that. However, they would only do it if they could ship it to me, not so I could buy it in the store, and if they had any in stock.
They don't.
She put me on hold saying that she's trying to arrange something with the store closest to me... So, maybe this will work...

Weird, the first girl I got was all ready to set it to today until she read the 10 month part and told me she couldn't, she didn't seem to care where I used the upgrade at. Makes me wonder if the CSR wants the sale.

Possibly, she supposedly couldn't get in touch with the local store and asked if they could call back in 2 days when they might have stock to ship to me. Maybe I should call again.
Nah, I'm tired of messing with this today. Thanks for letting me know about moving the upgrade date.
No, problem ingrown.
Sorry for sorta hijacking the thread though. I'm thinking I may try to get this with the early upgrade fee myself.
Has anyone confirmed the price going up to $350 for an upgrade after 7/24?
Just so everyone knows, the loyalty advantage applies to this phone. I got an additional 100 off because I hadn't upgraded in 24 months (iPhone) and my bill is
greater than 100
No upgrade fee either
Nifty phone for 100!

Thanks for the $199 credit AT&T

I'm on day 29 of my 30 day buyers remorse. Still love the phone but the GPS issues irk me. Also the fact that I paid $199 while others are getting it for free bugged me. So, I dialed 611 and spoke to an agent. They informed me that they are aware of the GPS issue and then transferred me to a acct negotiator rep ( or whatever term they are using).
I explained to them that my 30 days was nearly up and the GPS issue still hasn't been resolved. Also that I was irritated that I paid 199 while other stores were giving the phone away for free. (I then suggested that maybe AT&T gave the phones away because they knew about the GPS issue). I said I was thinking of taking it back and going with a different provider. They then came back and offered my a $199 credit and if I wanted to I could talk to a top level tech about adjusting my GPS. I took the credit but there obviously was no point in talking to the top tier tech rep.
so yea for me, a free Captivate + taxes. And I suppose the GPS fix will be out in a month or so. Really the GPS is the only issue that's bugging me now...
did they have to get into your phone in any way?
if thats the case it might be worth a shot.

nope. they just said 'thanks for being a loyal customer'... i don't think they can just "get into my phone" anyway, can they? This was all over the phone, I didn't go into a store or anything.

I tried and didn't work for me. She just said that I will still have an 11 month warranty so if the phone still has problems 11 months from now I can exchange it for a brand new one... for free. I asked her to clarify that I wouldn't need to pay for anything and she said absolutely not. She said she would "note it" on my account that I can exchange the phone for the exact same one for up to the next 11 months.
Darn.. I wanted a free phone though.
Yeah I ended up taking mine back (I paid the full price so I can keep my month to month in case I want to jump at some point), but seeing that we can get them for free makes me think that once Samsung fixes this issue and (hopefully?) we get 2.2 I will go ahead and snag one of these again.
wow they just told me I could not extend the buyers remorse period and that if I don't like the performance of the phone I should return it. and that is that. I said but ATT doesn't have any android phones on par with the captivate... but verizon does and he says then maybe I should go with verizon. if that is what will make me happy because they want happy customers.
Edit:
This has really got me thinking hard about jumping ship now... My sister just got an HTC Incredible on Verizon and she loves it.... I know its not quite the galaxy S but hey with a fully functional aGPS and a Froyo update around the corner who is going to notice the difference. Maybe I can family plan it up with her.
There's a bunch of folks that have been doing the same thing, and most HAVE received some kind of credit back. I tried last night, and jumped through a number of hoops, making it almost not even worth all the hassle, but this afternoon I was credited $100 to my account. I've heard anywhere from 100-199. I guess it all depends on the manager you are speaking with at the time.
They technically do not have to give you a credit back, because essentially it is price matching, which they do not do. So hopefully those that are planning on trying, get a customer service rep and or manager that is in a GOOD mood.
What if we bought the phone through best buy? Can we still talk to att about the issue?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
I bought mine through amazon wireless... and yes they asked where I bought it. so it might matter to your success in getting a credit if you went direct through att... If I return I have to return to Amazon and then deal with ATT for the service plan restructure.
the warranty is a year I believe so you can probably do a 1:1 swap as was stated above.
-p
Just remember that warranty replacements are refurbished units, not new ones...
replacing a year old unit with a refurbished unit sounds good to me.

I actually bought mine from best buy. They didn't ask me where I bought it.
I tired and the lady was like totally ignoring what I was saying. She was like well if you want you can take back to the store and get a refund. I was like whatever!
She looked up the GPS issue in the system and all it had was to enable use wireless networks. I was like that only enables cell tower location, doesn't help with GPS issues. System had nothing about a update or anything. So odd you find variations. This was the business premier services too. So tempted to change carriers but after 12 years .... You would think they would take care of you. Last time I called though they gave me 3000 roll over minutes so I guess I can't complain.
You must be like my friend and have an ability with dealing with companies... lol.

Originally walmart.com (letstalk.com) had it for free and then went to $99. Most places I have seen for $99. tigerdirect.com mypoints.com, cellstore.com, are all $99. I think you can keep your dataplan, one of the sites had a wizard that would check your account, I think it was tigerdirect.
I called them and was able to get a $75 credit to my account. I was out of my 30 days as well. I told them that I used it to log when I go out running, and my routes were choppy and it was recording that I was running mcuh more than I actually was. I made the comment that if it was a $50 phone, like I see it advertised at some places, I wouldn't have as big an issue, but seeing as it was $199, I expect it to work how it's advertised.
I have no issues with my GPS...takes a few seconds to lock on but it's not a big deal to me

[Q] Early upgrade from Captivate?

I just got my Captivate from AT&T in December, and I am pretty much unsatisfied with it. I was wondering if any of you here got an early upgrade to an Inspire 4G for just the $99 and $18 activation? No early upgrade fee's? Thank you!
I did. I complained and they gave me a full early upgrade and waived the activation fee. Not only that but they had a $50 off deal going on so I walked out with mine paying $53
Over the phone or AT&T store?
I complained and they said they set up the upgrade for me, I went to the store on release day and it was a clusterfarq. So a few hours later I had my phone. Then a customer service rep called me from corpo and I complained again and got a $20 credit on my account
Good luck
I went to the AT&T Store, and the guys there were very unhelpful. They just turned me down saying "we can't do anything about it."
What exactly did you say?
I received an early upgrade but I was exactly 22 days away from my official upgrade date, which was March 8. I contacted customer service on the phone and threatened them with Big Red and HTC Thunderbolt ( Verizon ) because I have 4 lines and all on recently renewed contract and they put in "special instructions" into the system for when I went to an AT&T Store.
The employee checked and I was eligible . HTC Inspire was mine for 105$

I got upgraded for no fee today. I don't know if it helped that I knew the assistant manager. Just a coincidence I went to high school with the guy. Such a big difference in this phone compared to my Sony Ericsson Xperia X10. It is worth the try to get an early upgrade!

Can he help me?? AT&T screwed me. They said the cheapest I can get it is $470 early upgrade, and he would take $200 from the bill. Still very high... I am pissed off. I threatened to change to Verizon, but nothing. Even higher level support didn't have the "authority" to change the prices for loyal customers for the past 7 or so years. SMH.

How would it be $470? The non-commitment pricing of this phone is 399.99 the most you would pay even in California where the tax is applied to the full retail value of the phone would be $435.
Sell the Captivate. Get $200 for it. Then buy the phone for the early upgrade price of $299.99. Still only pay $99 for it.

No offence but you kept it past it's 30 day return policy. It's not AT&T's fault that you suddenly want a new phone a few months later. If you really want it, dish out the $399. That's not too bad.
It's like buying a new car and a few months later deciding on you wanted a Honda instead of a Ford.
We all make choices in life. You made one....now live with it.
Att can not do upgrades over the phone if you are not within 4 months of upgrading. You can't do it in store unless you are so many days from upgrading. Nothing they can do about it.

I talked with AT&T about this as well. I got my refurbed Captivate in October. To qualify for for the exception upgrade, you need to wait 6 months. For me that is April around my birthday. They told me the cost to get the phone them would be whatever the 2 year contract price is for the phone plus $100.00. I have had this confirmed multiple times. I am hoping with the Atrix coming out and other potential offering with FFC and dual processors, that the two year price for the Captivate will plummet and I can get it cheaper as those other things do not matter to me.

Actually that is incorrect. Early upgrade on a Data device is 2 yr pricing plus $200.
Non smart phones it's 2 yr pricing plus $75.
I am sorry they gave your wrong information.
So basically you guys are saying I'm screwed. Yeah, was afraid of that. Hope someone wants to trade an Inspire for my Captivate. Maybe convince someone who isn't a techy at school. Haha.
Wow, sooooo many diff experiences. I purchased my Captivate and renewed my contract in August. I went to the At&t store on launch day perpared to pay $399 for it as we have a Corp. account. The rep told me if he would give me an early upgrade by starting my contract from that day. By doing this I was able to get it for $299 which was fine by me. 6 months for a $100 sounded like a deal to me. He said I would be eligible for upgrade again in 20 months and kept my unlimited data. Honestly, one of better experiences I had with them in the past 7 years.
I still think you should sell the cap on the market here for about $200(or more) take the $200 off and end up paying $70~ out of pocket... In my opinion the inspire is well worth it.

They sell on eBay for around $300. Maybe I should try there...
Just thought I'd pop in here and share my experience with switching from the Captivate to the Inspire.
I have only been an AT&T customer since August 2010. I have a couple of calls to ATT Customer service in my record where they documented my unhappiness with the GPS and lack of Froyo updates. When @samsungjohn came to the Captivate portal and stirred the pot with Samsung's PR stunt I had finally had enough I called 611 again and was polite, and nicely explained to the CSR my complaints with the Captivate. I asked if there was ANYTHING that they could do to move me into another phone, I never mentioned wanting to cancel my account or raised my voice in any way. The CSR told me that he understood my frustration and he had heard similar complaints before.
He was able to put a $150 dollar credit on my account and I was able to sell my Captivate for $200 so I walked out of a Corporate AT&T store with my Inspire at a net cost of $50 to me.
Maybe I got lucky, or maybe AT&T is hearing from a LOT of people like me and is losing customers, I don't know.
Just thought I'd share.

And maybe the highlighted part was the real reason. At any rate, congrats on the early upgrade. I'm lovin this device more and more.

2 seconds from canceling tmobile..

Ill give the short version... preordered on the 15th. told i'd get today. rep NEVER told me i needed to sign some email for verification. Email was sent to some god awful old address i dont even use. all that was offered was a $10 credit. Ive been w/ tmobile since like 02' and thats the best they can do??. call back and he can give a free month but only if i extend for 2 yrs....no thanks. So now i have to go to the store tomorrow and wait another day to get the phone. Oh ya btw i dropped my current phone in the toilet and it doesnt work so i have no phone @ the moment. im so livid I cant even see straight...... seriously considering another carrier just off of principle alone..
Call and talk to customer retention... They'll do much better.

both offers WERE from retention...i thought they could do much better as well.
Wait, what email? I received no email. Did you get tracking info?
Retention's not doing deals like they used to. I got a G2 from them for $249 with 16 months left on my contract. For the G2X they (mutiple agents) told me if I wanted to go to VZW, maybe I should. My average bill per month for the past 12 months is $350ish because of international roaming. Once the AT&T deal closes I'm going to take their advice and move back to VZW. By then, VZW will have LTE well implemented and a dual-core Android worldphone. With high-value post paid customer gone, T-Mobile can focus all thier attention on $29 per month prepaid customers which, based on CSR attitude, is what they'd prefer.
They did the 249 for me on 2 g2x. I was at the sprint store.
I would of had a deposit on sprint. So it evened out.

it seems like your right. I mean lets be serious. they KNOW i want the phone. hell I already bought accesorries for it so ya I am going to get it. its just how they went about the whole thing was so wrong i could not believe i was speaking with tmobile. The last guy who offered the free month w/ 2yr extension @ one point said " what do you want us to do?" and not in a helpful way. Like a "we dont care if you cancel;good riddance" kind of way. im still in shock over the whole thing. But its like im trapped. either shake this off and get the phone or go with another carrier, get charged an ETF for breaking contract then getting a higher bill with AT&T, sprint ,etc.
I had a $400 flexpay available which I took... There was on ONLINE form which required me to type in my name.
The only email I got was that my payment went through and it shipped.
Mine said it was supposed to be here Monday so I sold my N1 online. I called last night because it hadn't arrived nor had UPS showed it was even shipped. The lady on the phone told me that online orders were "pre-orders" and the phone wasn't even supposed to ship until Wednesday. I had her and her manager go to the website and tell me where, anywhere, did it say a preorder. I also said people were getting them already and they "assured" me that no one was getting them yet.
I actually had the supervisor cancel the order because I said I'd rather pick it up Wednesday rather then have it ship Wednesday. 20 minutes after I got off the phone, UPS showed it was picked up and scheduled for next day delivery. So I don't even know if they cancelled it or just got it shipped.
Just cancel it and pick one up at the store tomorrow. At this point it isn't even worth fighting with them to get it shipped. I ordered mine Friday with standard shipping and I just got mine a few minutes ago.
Customer retention did me right on today. To make a long story short I have had problems with my Vibrant since day one back in July. From the GPS to the freezing and reboots. T-Mobile has sent me 5 Vibrants since August and when I called on today I asked to speak with a manager. I told them I would like to cancel my account because I spent $500 on a phone and they have done nothing to fix it for me. I told them I tried every GPS fix known to man but none of them worked to my standards. I play golf and use Skydroid so I need the GPS to be pretty damn accurate. It worked fine on my N1 and MyTouch 3g. She then said "I can give you a $200 credit if you upgrade your device." I told her if she looked at my account I haven't been under contract with them for 3 years and have purchased my last 4 devices off contract so what makes you think I want to sign a 2 year contract now with this AT&T merger looming around. She asked me how they could keep me as a customer and I asked her what the value of my used Vibrant was. She told me $354. I then said, "the only way I will remain a T-Mobile customer is if they buy my Vibrant back for $354 and I purchase a G2x off contact for the difference". She put me on hold for 5 minutes and came back and said they would be willing to do that and would ship my G2x tomorrow and after I receive it I have 7 days to return my Vibrant. She even asked me if I would like to pay for the G2x right now or just add the cost to my bill. I chose to pay it now and should have a G2x in my hand by Friday for less than what people are paying to upgrade. Big deal, my Vibrant is gone but I got two cores of goodness for a little over $150 off contract.
Ask for a rep to come bring you a phone immediately. That's how you only paid $100 for the phone with no contract right?

Awesome. This is what retention is meant for. You had a real serious legitimate issue and were considering cancelling. The people that are saying retention isn't doing what they used to are likely people that threaten to cancel whenever they want to get something. T-Mobile sees your history and how often you talk to retention or get deals from them. Eventually they will just call your bluff.

it was an email with a "electronic signature" link that needed to be clicked to confirm the phone. i mean I confirmed my full social, secret code, billing AND shipping address. I dont see why this was even needed. I received no tracking info because it was never shipped.

Blame your state. That's why this is in place. What other carrier lets you split your phone up in payments? I'll go with.... none. It was their fault for not checking the email addy but come on it is only one more day.

That's the full discounted price of the phone, so sounds like a good deal they gave you, but they should never had told u to go back to VZW, they should have went thru the bill and lowered it and also gave you an unlock code for your current phone so when you roam internationally you can just grab a pre-paid sim from where ever you are for way cheaper prices.

i completely agree however im not one of those people who call and complain for every little issue. truth is ive NEVER had an issue with tmobile until this happened. 1st time ever threatening to cancel and 1st time speaking w/ retention.

the only reason its an issue is because i have no phone @ the moment. (see 1st post) so in the rare case that there was an emergency and I needed a phone id be screwed. If i did still have a phone i'd be annoyed but would have just took it for what it is. A retarded mixup on their part. Which is what im doing

I definitely wasn't calling you out specifically, more just a general statement, or if anyone specifically it was Barry that said they aren't doing what they used to.
Regarding your situation, if they offered you a free month, that is usually the most retention will give as far as financial credits, and it will always require a 2 year contract from my experience (in customer care, not as a customer threatening to cancel).
You really want to go to some crap company over a couple days, when you are the one who ruined your other phone?? And if you are buying this, I am sure you can afford to spend $20 for a prepaid at walmart to give you the basic functionality that is essential. Geesh

I was still in contract with 10 months to go for a full upgrade. When I called, I asked about the upgrade. When the CSR told me I didn't qualify for the upgrade I immediately asked how much it would be just to cancel the service. She said "$200" and my reply to her was "Thats it? I may as well just do that then." She right away offered me a full upgrade.
I too had to go along with the electronic signature but my CSR was nice enough to ask me what email to send it to and let me know when it was coming. I feel for you, man. It's a shame that most companies are straying away from quality customer service, especially with consumers that have been long term with the company. I guarantee if you were a new customer, they would have bent over backwards for you.

How have you been with tmo that long and don't have a phone laying around? I have at least 3 that I could dig up and throw a sim in.

T-Mobile V10 is $499 currently (excludes JUMP)

Following link has $100 off any listed smartphone including the V10, so $599-100=$499. Deal is web only. Enjoy!
http://www.t-mobile.com/offer/super-smartphone-deals.html
EDIT: This is offered to new plans/lines apparently, not upgrades or JUMPs. There has been some success in calling 611 to honor it retroactively even on upgrades. However, it is very much YMMV as I went through 3 reps unsuccessfully.
Nice
Can I return my phone to any tmobile store?? I don't want to as I've had no issues and am loving it, but if I can get $100 off, then I'm gonna return it. Reason I asked is because I bought from an authorized tmobile dealer, not corporate, and they said they would charge me a $50 restocking fee. I don't think that's tmobile's policy so maybe I'll try to return it to a different corporate store if possible. I will definitely be calling tomorrow to try and get the discount applied, if not this thing is going back.
Are you kidding me? I paid 100 more 1 week ago and didn't have jump but just signed up.
That makes me wonder if I should return it and buy another? Hmmm restocking fee...

Damn! I'm on a dealer line and I can't purchase it... What do I do? Should I try to go to a T-Mobile store and see if they would work something out for me or would they just flat out dismiss me because they wouldn't even get any commission...
I might try calling customer service and see what they say.

Woah, thats about the price I bought my G4 for..
How long does the offer last?
Well shoot... If I didn't have to go through so much nonsense to get it unlocked, I'd be tempted to return mine :/
I think it may be price mistake as I found the price has gone back up to $600.
I cannot seem to make it work. Is it only for on-contracts, doesn't apply to full retail purchases?
BTW, if there is anyone in San Fransisco who bought the phone already but wants to take advantage of this deal (meaning you want to buy again with the new price) please contact me
I just called 611 and spoke a cs rep and they gave me a $100 credit towards my bill since I just bought my v10 a week ago (Oct 30). He couldn't find the promo so I gave him the url. Once he saw the promo, he put me on hold for a couple minutes and went to talk to a higher up, he came back and said they'd give me a $100 credit towards my bill. Good enough for me!

Quite upset..i have been with T-mobile for over 10 years. I just purchased 2 LG V10's, one on monday (in store) and ordered one (from another store that didnt have any in stock) which just arrived yesterday. I tried the online chat and a phone call and they refused to help me. The rep i spoke to in the chat said the promo is real (cause i sent him the link) but he couldnt do anything for me. He told me to try calling or going back to the store i purchased them from. The rep on the phone said the promo doesnt exist (i even gave him the url) which he said he typed in and it didnt go anywhere (lie). So according to him, since the webpage doesn't exist, there is no promo so he wouldnt help me either. Tell me you can't do anything but don't tell me the link doesn't work when i'm staring right at the webpage.
I don't understand how a company can run a promo and not even have it listed in their system. Yes, i know it happens. I have had to "prove" a promo exists to T-mo before and usually they are very helpful.
Call back and escalate it, speak with a supervisor.

That's a great deal.
Guys, can someone please clarify how to apply to this? I'm clicking the "apply coupon" button and then get redirected to another site where I cannot find any of the phones. Maybe I should be logged in first?
I'm not living in the USA but I do have a friend living there. How can we make him apply to this campaign? I don't know on which carrier he is yet but assuming he's on T-Mo, can he just apply for this promotion, pay 500$+tax and get the phone without paying anything else regarding his plan etc? I don't see the option to buy the phone without any conracts; so this promo forces you to sign up for a long-term contract? (you cannot just retail the phone if you're a pre-paid customer for instance?)
Add:
Nevermind. Contacted T-Mo and they said it has to be a new customer and shall apply for a long-term post-paid contract.
The price is back up to $599 for the V10, can't seem to find any way to get $499.
