[Q] Safe to hand over non-responding phone for repair? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi guys. I have a nexus s i9023, it was running well with 2.3.4 for three months. Got an OTA update for 2.3.6 two days ago, installed it.Im running stock, and the root is locked.
Everything seemed to be running fine when last night it just stopped responding and freezing. Taking battery out doesnt help, it again freezes at the colorful x logo or at the unlock screen.
I read on how to do a reset, but pressing volume down and power button gives me only a flash of blacklight (for a millisecond) and then nothing happens. tried it many times. What am I doing wrong? Pressing volume up and power button gives me a fastboot menu, and recovery mode only gives me an exclamation mark android, then I have to take battery out again.
Also, if I hand in my phone to the dealer for repair (its under warranty), are they locked out too or can they access my data when they repair it? Please help.

Volume down and power doesn't do anything. You have to use volume UP and power.
Also what do you mean"root is locked?"

apologies matt, it says the lock state = locked, when i press volume up and power button.
the options i get are reboot bootloader, reboot, recovery and power off.
please tell me how to go about formatting/wiping my nexus s? also, if i cant wipe it, is it a good idea to hand it over with my data in it to the dealer for warranty claim i.e. can they access my data?

You can wipe the phone from recovery. Go into recovery then when it loads press power + volume up.

Reboot and you should be stock

better way to add custom roms for your nexus one

okay so i found backdoor to flash the ROM on your nexus one phone "that probably wont void your warranty[i haven't tried it yet]"
turn off your device>
when fully powered off
first press and hold the trackball then holding down the power button
now you should see a white screen with droids on skateboards
now using the volume up/down buttons scroll the blue stripe to the spot that says "BOOTLOADER" and press the power button
next (using power up/down buttons) scroll to "RECOVERY" (it will reboot .....be paitiant)
when you see the android (robot) with the triangle warning sign
simultaneously press the power button and both volume up and down buttons
now you should see the "android system recovery" (with blue text)
you should see the following
-reboot system now
-apply sdcard:update.zip
-wipe data/factory reset
-wipe cache partition(this is good if your phone wont connect to data or is unresponsive)
-apply sdcard:update.zip is the one you want to use
but make sure to rename the new custom ROM file update.zip
please tell me if this truly works without giving you the "unlock bootloader screen that says 'unlocking the bootloader will void your warranty"
Most interested in this, don't have mine yet though.....

I doubt this will work since it never worked with older android phones like the g1/mt3g.
There is no way you can void your warranty. If something goes wrong just flash the stock nexus one rom without root access and lock the boot loader. They will never know.

There is a stock Nexus One ROM somewhere in the N1 section. Do a complete wipe and flash that. Then go into fastboot, flash the stock N1 recovery (somewhere in the N1 section) and then lock the bootloader. I think the code is something like fastboot oem lock bootloader.
what a great idea...
except the bootloader will not accept the lock command....
as to my knowledge, there is no way to go back, when you unlocked the bootloader, it stays that way...
but please correct me if I am wrong..

[Q] Hard Reset

Guys,
I've tried various searches but I can't come up with an answer that works for me.
When attempting a factory/hardware reset one has two choices:
1. Use the software option.
2. Hardware option using button presses.
I'm looking for a procedure to execute option 2. I can get into the bootloader (Vol Up + Power).
Once in the bootloader, I can navigate to the "Recovery" option but once selected my NS doesn't appear to do anything, it just sits there with an "!" inside a triangle and the little android-droid on the screen.
I doesn't move from there no matter how long I leave it and there are no prompts/confirmations.
Once in that state, if I remove the battery and the reboot the phone boots up as if nothing happened...everything is still there, all my accounts still work etc. Basically the actions had no effect.
Does anyone know how to factory reset the device properly? My device non-root btw.
TIA,
Syphon.
I think, for the stock recovery, once you get the ! in the triangle you need to press or hold volume-up and power button again, then it will take you to recovery.
Ah cool.
Thanks for the tip, I will remember that for the next time I need to do it!!

On my phone, after 2.3.1, it's power button first, then while holding it, volume up, and only while the box dumping an arrow onto the little android is showing (maybe a second or so). Once the "!" in a triangle is showing, no key combo will get my phone into recovery. Timing is critical. Took me a few tries and a few helpful posts here to get it right.
Oh, also, you can do the ULTIMATE factory reset on this device by doing a "fastboot oem unlock" on the device (then relock it with "fastboot oem lock"). This wipes the sd card as well as the personal data in the rom space.
Awesome, thanks for all the information guys. Much appreciated.

Recovery troubles

I'm trying to root my phone and every time the phone hangs at the hboot screen. So today I manually entered recovery pressing vol down and power. I wanted to do a factory reset and try rooting again since I already have the OTA installed. Once in recovery I cannot navigate with the volume buttons. I have to remove the battery to even restart the phone. Am I doing something wrong or is there a problem with the phone?
are you mixing up cwm with the bootloader?

I have yet to get the phone rooted, so its not cwm. Am I not able to do a factory reset with the bootloader or whatever it is I get into holding volume down and power?
@OP:
When u come to HBOOT menu, give it ~20-30 seconds to be responsive. Then Press power button once or twice, and it should start responding.

Boost LG Stylo Soft Brick? Please help.

I have a boost mobile LG Stylo that I rooted last November using 6th_Hokage's custom room method provided here http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g-stylo/development/boost-stylo-5-1-1-zv5-custom-rom-v1-t3216307 on this forum. I used the rooted-zv5-system.img file. All has been well for 7 moths until last night when I was using Google Chrome and the app hung (which happens occasionally, not frequently). Had to pull and reinstert battery and upon booting, I am getting in this weird loop of Setup/Activation Wizard - Wifi Connect - and TalkBack Activation that I cannot get out of. HOME and RECENT SCREENS buttons are disabled, BACK button is enabled. I am assuming some corruption took place.
Can anyone point me in the direction of steps to take on resolving this? I am good either going back to factory or root, I just need my phone working. I have reviewed this forum, and am confused on best option on how to proceed, or do I have a permanent brick.
Thanks so much in advance for the assistance!
I'd reset it from recovery mode. I reset my phone whenever it acts wonky. When you do reset it in recovery do it like 3 times like you are clearing it out to put in a rom. If all else fails you can at least flash the rooted rom or original rom again, Good Luck! At least you have root, I'm on 6.0 and no root sux big time!

Thanks so much. Cool, I hope it is an easy fix. Because I am pretty much a noob with this stuff, I have never "cleared it out" to put in a rom. I might have done it, but do not recall. I will have to review my process steps again to make sure. Any chance you can provide some step by step instruction that I can follow with regard to resetting and clearing out from recovery mode?.
Here are the steps I found online, does this look correct to you...a hard factory reset? Is this ok even with rooted phone?
Hard reset LG G Stylo
Turn off the device
Press and hold Volume Down key + Power Key about 6-7 seconds
Release Power key when LG logo appear
When still pressing Volume Down key, press Power key one more
Release Volume down key when Factory Data Reset menu appears
Use Volume key to select “Yes”
Pres Power key to confirm.
I do still have the rooted rom I originally used and instructions from 6th_Hockage...are you saying that if I just flash that again following the steps I used to originally root the phone that this will work even though the phone is already rooted?
Thanks!
Turn off the device
Press and hold Volume Down key + Power Key about 6-7 seconds
Release Power key when LG logo appear AND it says "Recovery Mode"
You'll get a recovery menu and you use the volume up and down keys to highlight the "factory reset" after highlighting "factory reset" press the power key to activate selection. Do that three times and you will have a clean slate of your rooted rom.
You don't have to re-flash the reset will be the rooted rom
Did it work???

Rooted Droid Maxx won't boot into recovery...

Hey all,
I have a rooted Droid Maxx. When I press Power and Down Volumn I can get into the AP Fastboot Menu. When I choose any of the options Using Vol down to move me through the options including normal Powerup, Recovery, Factory, Barcode, BP Tools it will only do a normal boot. I'm using vol down to choose an option and Vol up to activate the option. I have been able to get into these various options before, but something has gone south on me....any ideas...and what other info do you need?
Also, on the fastboot screen it states:
Device is locked. Status code: 0
EDIT: Strangely enough, when I move to Barcodes and hit the up Vol button, I can get into barcodes...but on any other options, when I press Vol up, it just does a normal phone boot.
the phone has been acting a little twitchy lately...camera won't function and keeps telling me to restart, now e-mail is starting to do funny stuff....Not happy. One of the posts that I read on trying to get the camera working correctly stated that wiping the Dalvic cache might help and I think I need to get into recovery tools to do that.
Thx
Any help anyone? I need to get into the tools to wipe the phone....
Thx

It's not just you apparently. I just tried mine to try to use as a home security camera (after loaning it to a friend to use as a temp phone) and it's doing the same thing yours is, can't factory rest and start over so I guess now I'll have to try to unroot and/or reflash bootloader and get it back to "stock" and try formatting after that.
