Dear Users .
Helloo and i hope all of you have a good day ~!
i like to make a small "VS" between SGS2 and iphone just with the GPS ONLY
and i need some explanation form experts about this matter !
1st of all i am sgs2 fan !
but while i need to use GPS more than 15 times in a day some problems rise and i need to understand the reasons behind.
when you hold iphone 1st time and go to the Google Map for the 1st time and try to lock your position it will take for TTFF like 2 or 3 sec !
which is wonderful and it seem that IPHONE is the only phone record this Super Fast FIX !
now when i tried my SGS2 , with GPS STATUS program it take up to 20 sec in most case and some times it go further 120 sec to FIX. while Iphone take for most cases 4 sec "sgs2 and iphone in the same place and under super clear sky "
Now what i need to understand is this a hardware or software problem !
the Frameware that i have is up to date :
android 2.3.3
frameware .JPKG5
i did all trick around by downloading the A-GPS . and other things . but ate the end . i did not get FIX les than 15sec .
while iphone did that within 4 sec . which is rely strange .
My SgS2 show me the 6 satellites in the sec 4 and it kip waiting til it reach 19 sec with 10 satellites in view then FIX with 4 in use . whiy it did not fix at the sec 4 with the 6 satellites in view !
Iphone did that then sgs2 has to did that ! or it is just the apple magic !
Well Idk man Samsung phones always have taken forever for me , mm but then my galaxy s 2 don't take the long , I have an iPhone , sgs 2 and HTC EVO 3d and they almost all lock in the same time I'm in las Vegas area btw
from my shooter rocking myns ROM
iPhone is the best one in any care...........
It's the way the OS manages the GPS. WP7 and iOS are clearly superior to Android in obtaining a lock and accurate position no matter what phone it is. I've tried enough of them. It has something to do with how Android manages the GPS.
Seems I can always get a position within 5 seconds on my HD7 but even family members' HTC android phones take significantly longer.

I've also compared GPS location tracking in Google Latitude and it appears that on my SkyRocket, the location that it shows me at isn't accurate at all. It shows me one street over! I wouldn't think that android is inferior using Google Latitude but it seems to be while I sit here on a couch with an iPhone using Latitude and my SkyRocket. It also doesn't appear to maintain "Background Updating" on the SkyRocket like the iPhone does and the option is set to automatically detect and update in the background on both phones..
OS
I am pretty sure it is based in the OS! android ftw
On my old HTC HD2 the lock times were quite random. Some days it was quick some days it took a 2-3 minutes.
On my Skyrocket I'm averaging about 6-7 seconds to get a lock and that's indoors. Haven't had any issues with accuracy either.
Have you tried turning on all of you location settings?
Same here best gps on any device i have had make sure all location settings are on.

Everytime I've used my gps on my SR, I've gotten almost immediate locks and it keeps it for the duration. I don't have any problems at all with it.

Is the OP talking about the original SGS2 or the Skyrocket?
The reason I ask is I have a Skyrocket and two original S2's. The Skyrocket always achieves a lock within 10 seconds no matter what.
The two original S2's take about a minute for first fix. After the first fix they'll lock within 20 seconds but if you let them sit for any amount of time (sleeping), it takes another minute to lock on.

Is anyone else getting weird leaps in GPS? Mostly it's very reliable, but last week I was in South Kensington (London) but GoogleMaps, TrackMe and TomTom all placed me mid-English Channel. Looking at my trackme trips, I found that I spent a few moments in Tunisia the week before, and you will be very impressed by my 15 minute cycle this morning ....

If you search this forum on GPS, you'll find some stuff, like here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2509292&postcount=3

I'm not talking about a few metres or a couple of hundred metres - I'm getting anomalous gps readings that are hundreds or even thousands of kilometres from my actual location.
These seem to be happening more and more frequently ....
I have had something similar - on Saturday (and also in the London area), for a few minutes TomTom told me that I was travelling at over 300mph. Now I know that the white van that I had hired for the day is much faster than my 911, but not that much faster!
I have also had a much weaker signal than usual recently - normally TomTom shows 4 or 5 bars, but over the last few weeks it has often been at 1 or 2 bars.
I had assumed that there were some atmospheric causes at play, but would be interested in any other explanations.
I've noticed the GPS in my Cruise acts up when 3rd party media players are running, mainly Resco Radio (when it's streaming, I frequently drop all GPS connections--when I press the top button to blank the screen, Resco's audio mutes when the amber GPS LED blinks, then comes on when it goes out... on--off--on--off, I have to leave the screen on to make it work) and Conduits Pocket Player (the device spontaneously reboots when the Player & GPS are both active). Both the players work without issue if GPS isn't being used.
When WMP or the HTC media player are running with GPS active, everything seems to 'get along' better.
I'm hoping this, and other little annoyances with the device clear up when 6.1 is released -- probably a good idea, and less frustrating, to hold off on doing to much troubleshooting until then...
I experienced something similar. I had the phone with me on a boat to check the top speed of the boat. I showed the boat to be traveling at nearly 200 km/h which is far to fast. So I loaded google maps and it placed me in a whole different country. A soft reset solved the problem.
This has not happened before, but I have experienced TomTom getting a hiccup when driving a few times. Suddenly the whole map turns upside down and it starts screaming about me having to do a u-turn as soon as possible. But after a few seconds it resolves again. This does not happen when in a town and the signal is bad. It can just as well happen with good line of sight and a good signal.
Perhaps the US is tampering with the GPS signals because of the problems in Georgia?

Now that I call a conspiracy theory...
My GPS has acted strangely, but in far smaller proportions... some 100 m or about so. Mind you, I'm using iGO...
My colleague's Polaris has shown the same behaviour, sudden displacements. Most of the time between 10 and 100 km.
Mine does that too. I'm normally doing 250 mph in the irish sea!! Soft reset fixes it though.
Does anyone know the name or have the "Super Power Control Widget" found in Cyanogen RC2 ROM?
It's really sweet and would love to use it! I had to switch off cm6 RC2 cuz it was draining my battery like no other, even with Snap v7.11
it is coded by the cm team. you may be able to pull it from the rom though. as for the battery draw, i have been on cm6 since the very first nightly. while my battery isnt astounding it isnt much worse than anything else i had tried prior. did you wipe battery stats and "calibrate" the battery?
Switched Pro is what you're looking for: http://www.androidzoom.com/android_applications/tools/switchpro-widget_gpdm.html

I tried pulling the settings and settingsprovider .apk's from cyanogen and replacing them in Damage control and it was a disaster so if it is possible it is certainly going to take a bit more effort than just swapping out a file or two.
I'd love to see this available as well.
switch pro is nice but its not the same. Switch pro doesnt go vertical like the CM6 power control does. Plus switch pro has four diffrent widget sizes in the widget menu. I am a neat freak and all those widget sizes make me unhappy. Thanks OP I didnt even see the new power control in CM6 I figured it was the same as the one from RC1. Now I can get rid of switch pro and things are a bit neater lol.
Also on RC2 and after 13 hours I was at 14% battery. Early on in the day I was texting and calling just a little I also did a quick web search and played a game for about 10 minutes, after 10 hours like that I was at 47% which also was equal to 2 hours and 46 minuts of up time. A few hours later I surfed the web for about 1.5 hours bringing my phone down to 14% I forgot to check uptime before plugging it in, but if my estimate is correct it should be close to 4 hours plus of up time with a total of 13 hours without a charge. Thats awesome! I have gmail being pushed and a PSN widget refreshing every one hour. I no longer have beautiful widgets refreshing because I clicked the setting to have it refresh after wake. So actually I set it to sync at 16 hours since you cant turn it off. Also if you wake the phone within 10 minutes the beautiful widgets wont refresh, thus it wont wast battery. More then 10 mintus and it will refresh. So I am not sure if thats heavy use or moderate use. On another not I dont have any battery savers installed, I dont use anything to kill apps. Instead I monitor my system with system panel and running services. I make sure nothign is constantly running and I watch running services. I do not kill programs in running services I look to it for times and referance only. Also dont look at running services and get confused by things like pure music showing up as running. Personaly my running services shows pure music, tikl ptt and about 10 or more other things. Just because its showing it doesnt mean its hogging your battery lol.
Check out system panel and click the help button its very informative.
Power control plus in the market looks similar to the cm6 widget. Haven't tried it yet though.
EVO on Tapatalk
Try Extended Controls. It's way better than SwitchPro.
Hi all. Was wondering if anyone out there is having GPS issues on 4.0.3?
I did the update just before I left home to go to Indonesia and now I'm here the GPS won't get a lock particularly when using google maps. Says it has sattelites in range but even with 4 or 6 won't get a lock. However did manage to get a lock a couple of nights ago using SkEye astronomy program.
Any feedback appreciated.
I experienced the sameproblem with Nexus S locking on GPS days ago. Usually when I'm in Italy, I'm always connected to internet and GPS lock very fast, helped by the network.
But days Iago I went to London, with pre-cached map of the city and in 3 days the phone NEVER locked on the GPS system unless a wireless connection. All it said was "Trying to get current position..." and after a few seconds "Impossible to get the current position. Retry later".
While trying to get the position on googlemap in the status bar I noticed the empty GPS-circle never started to blink...
Exactly the same thing happened to my brother device (also a 4.0.3 Nexus S).
What worked for me.
So Im using the Galaxy s2.
Leaked ics.
Gps bug.
http://www.appbrain.com/app/gps-doctor/com.epekware.gpsdoctor
It said it worked and now maps finds me as does 'places'.
Facebook now gives me places nearby but still says not found.
I zoomed in on maps and its pretty much got me to within a few feet. So it has to be gps. Towers gets you w/in a few states. (jk)
I have the same issue. With ICS my phone can't get a GPS lock.
I'm back on GB though.
Ive been meaning to come and debunk my own thread.
False alert everyone. It doesnt work. When I was on wifi it took my info from there and 'injected' it. For whatever reason maps etc took that as well enough.
On 3g it would seem to only triangulate my position and get it right to within hundreds of yards.
However I hope that the thread helps developers develop a bug fix. I saw qbking post a new ics vid today so maybe the latest leak is gps corrected. Well see.
flash a stock GB rom, Pete's for instance. Lock on to GPS in Maps. I use GPS test from Market also and Clear and update GPS with app. Reboot, then Flash ICS rom and benefit
GPS Test worked for me
Thanks for that. I had the same issue after updating to ICS - Glympse couldn't find where I was, Maps wouldn't use GPS, etc.
I installed GPS Test by Chartcross Limited (I haven't posted enough to post links, so I've replaced the forward slashes with back slashes "https:\\play.google.com\store\apps\details?id=com.chartcross.gpstest&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5jaGFydGNyb3NzLmdwc3Rlc3QiXQ..").

All I had to do was to use the menu to get to Settings, and use the buttons at the top of the settings to Clear AGPS and Update AGPS (I don't know whether both of these were necessary), and everything started working. I didn't need to reboot.

I have a galaxy s7 and am concerned after about 20 minute of light surfing ie no streaming or downloading the phone can reach temperatures of 39 degrees so it's very warm to touch......I have closed all apps in the background and wiped the cache but still get these temperatures......I have upgraded from my galaxy s6 edge but it never got this warm ??? Do I have a problem phone or is this normal for a s7 ??? Thanks for any replies.
It's normal. I bet you just have a new phone based on your description. I've been there. Let it settle. I also had this trouble when a random app was bugging in the background. Check for those man.

Using 4G my phone is really hot to the touch.. on wifi it is less.. i think it's normal
It's not hot anymore
When the phone was fresh and the battery was not optimized the phone heats up more, after the first few days of use I noticed the phone to me much cooler when just surfing even when just on LTE and not wifi. It does even warm up and still cool to touch after an hour of surfing for me.

I have the same issue while charging and using the phone or when I'm on 4G and using full display brightness. I think it's common.
My phone began to go insanely hot this mornig... drained about 20% in less than an hour until i realized something was up
I began to dig around, searching for rogue apps and did not find anything out of the ordinary
I then installed wake lock and the issue was an update i received (installed itself, i did not install it manually) for the "Oculus room" i think. Then i remembered i really did saw that notification but didn't pay too much attention to it, since i get it every other week and never had any trouble.
I then froze the app/package via titanium backup and... Yes, my phone kept going hot and wake lock kept telling me the same thing was disturbing the peace.
Went to TB and the app was defrost. I froze it one more time, and a couple minutes later, checked and it was defrost again... So, since i haven't been using my gear VR anymore, i froze all the things related to Oculus and problem solved

I posted this over OnePlus forums but received 0 replies, so I will just repost it here. I hope you guys don't mind. I am REALLY thankful to anyone who does the test!
So I am on the edge of purchasing an 8T, but I've had a horrendous experience with the 6T and 7 Pro, so I thought I'd ask. The 8 Pro also had bad reception in Notebookcheck review, so yeah. Asking.
Could anyone please install "GPS Status apps".
See:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chartcross.gpstest
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.eclipsim.gpsstatus2
Once installed, please:
- Open the app in your office/house. Wait a bit until GPS locks on, take a screenshot.
- Go outside. Wait for GPS lock and take a screenshot again.
If you wish to compare it yourself, take another phone (Samsung Exynos/Huawei Kirin has usually superb GPS reception) and just do the same with those.
Thank you for doing this!
Hey I am sorry but I am not going to do all that. But I can tell you I am a delivery driver I drive over 8 hours a day. And the gps on maps works perfect for me on the daily. And the locater works great on the company end too. Maybe to good. They know where I am at all times
Yeah, my 6T and 7 Pro also worked for like some time, but they both failed me when I didn't have perfect reception. Basically devices like the Samsung Note 9/Note 10 Plus, I have light green signal. Same with Huawei Mate 20. On the 6T/7Pro I only had dark yellow/orange/red-ish bars. And in an open area, standing still, it does not matter. But when you are in a car, or in the streets - the signal level drops and every bit counts.
So, if anyone does the test, I'll buy you a beer via Paypal, idc. Thanks.

Gave both about 5 seconds. First in house, second in my backyard. Live in California. To be honest I've never had issues with the GPS so idk how this helps at all... Too lazy to compare to another phone, but based off of GPS usage using Strava a while ago on OP6, its about the same if not a bit better.

Thank you, that's a great signal, to be honest.
How do I buy you that beer?
My 6, and 7 Pro had no issues with GPS and Maps. I've only had the 8T for two days now but I do have GPS Status installed and sitting here in my two story house I lock on to 24/44 satellites in about 2, or 3 seconds, and the Maps app seems to work just fine!

At this point, I am only waiting for folks to figure out call recording (like if root + Call Recorder by skvalex works or not). If that works, I'm hitting that order button so hard my mouse will break.
Thank you guys.
